Dada on Amazon Prime Video Review: Kavin Is Pitch Perfect In This Fatherhood Drama

Director: Ganesh K Babu

Cast: Kavin , Aparna Das, Harish K, Aishwariyaa Bhaskaran, Bhagyaraj

Ganesh Babu’s Dada has all the ingredients of a templated family drama, one that is usually and carefully choreographed to evoke tears and sentiment — an unplanned pregnancy that shatters families, a bittersweet parting and the bond between a father and a son. But what Ganesh does with these tropes – notoriously known for its melodramatic tendencies – is turn it into a meaningful yet understated coming of age story of a young father.

And Ganesh is very clear with how he wants to tell this story as early as his film’s first shot. We see a couple sprawled on bed, the woman (Sindhu played by Aparna Das), gently resting her head on her partner’s chest with a profound smile. She lets out a tear, expressing a feeling of fulfilment in her romance. And her boyfriend Manikandan (Kavin) lets out a sigh – not because she’s crying, but because he literally can’t (we get to hear a cute story about how he didn’t even cry as an infant). He goes on to comfort her with a line right out of the nice boyfriends’ handbook — “I’ll make sure that you never shed a tear again,” he says. And just when you lean into your seat to get ready for a cutesy romance montage, the screen cuts to a shot of Sindhu weeping. But this time the tears aren’t as happy. After all, they have an unplanned pregnancy on their hands.

Dada finds its own such ways to surprise us, leaving behind the stylised touches that often accompany the genre. Take Manikandan and Sindhu’s romance for instance. Theirs is a love that unfolds with essentially no backstory. We are told that they are caught in the throes of wild, young love, and this is made instantly believable by the lived-in and comfortable language of Kavin and Aparna’s chemistry. The couple eventually moves out of their houses and burns bridges with their families, and end up finding comfort in friends. The friends-like-family concept is effortlessly captured in vignettes of conversations between Mani and Amit (a superb Harish K), who go from being infantile men-children who giggle and squirm over diaper changes to sensitive best friends who say ‘I love you’ to each other without any shame.

Almost every character that populates the universe of Dada has agency and a purpose. Right from the auto driver who gives a disapproving look to a father’s despicable act to VTV Ganesh’s cameo, who ends up pushing the film’s playful take on destiny — the writing is detailed and meaningful.

But the beating heart of the script is Mani’s voyage into fatherhood, and in turn manhood. Mani isn’t a reckless teenager who sprints at the mention of pregnancy. He is a happy but nervous man in love, who isn’t ready to face such a primal fear so early in life. So, when Mani and Sindhu part ways over an ugly spat, Sindhu does the unthinkable and Mani suddenly finds himself to be a character straight out of a single dad drama. Children and their repartee with adults make for adorable placeholders in films. But this track also often tends to become worn out in films, which inevitably make the kid annoyingly oversmart and mouthy. The bond that Mani shares with his baby boy Aditya, however, is a realistic yet beautiful representation, warts and all (watch out for the scene when he sheepishly speaks about the mother shaped elephant in the room with his dad). “Do you want to know who your mom is,” Mani asks the child, to which he slips under the sheet, deciding to sleep instead of having to face the difficult conversation.

A lot of things are left unsaid in Dada , and it’s a refreshing quality for a film that deals with motherly negligence. Filmmaker Ganesh is careful never to glorify motherhood, nor forcefully shame women who live with the difficult decisions they have made. It instead puts the onus on men, giving them the diapers and ladles to care and cook for their children.

‘DaDa’ movie review: Kavin, Aparna Das impress in this emotional rollercoaster

Thanks to ample support from its lead actors, debutant director ganesh k babu’s film about a single father and a fractured relationship turns out to be a wholesome entertainer despite few missteps.

It’s normal for most people, regardless of gender, to wonder at least once how they would be if they were to become a single parent by chance. Think along the lines of a relationship that grows and ruptures, with the man having to raise a child on his own, and it opens door to a wide range of stories for the screen. In DaDa , debutant Ganesh K Babu writes a solid storyline with this and the film is impressive despite the conventional treatment of the screenplay.

We open to a long, lingering shot that closes in on Manikandan (Kavin) waking up to his college sweetheart Sindhu (Aparna Das) resting on his shoulder, shedding tears of happiness. There’s airtight intimacy between them. As he wonders the reason behind those happy tears, we, along with Sindhu, realise that Mani has never cried. “I didn’t cry even when I was an infant and it’s not like I haven’t tried. I am just unable to,” he informs. Sindhu leans forward and kisses him on the cheek. From the camera angle to the kiss and to what we know of these characters here, many details from this simple introduction scene get reflected later on in pivotal moments. One of the many signs of a good screenplay is this — it knows what it sets out to do and it effectively sets out some convincing high points for pay-offs.

And as one realises later, the abovementioned is also the only scene in the film that is meant to establish the relationship between the two because director Ganesh has no interest in telling a conventional ‘boy-meets-girl and they run around trees’ tale. The girl becomes pregnant by accident and decides to not abort the baby. Being unexpectedly forced to bear adulting responsibilities, Mani struggles to find a grip on reality, turns to alcohol, and the relationship with Sindhu begins to fracture. After many unfortunate developments, the baby is born but Sindhu seemingly deserts both her partner and her child. Mani now has to face the harsh realities of being a single father.

DaDa (Tamil)

The first thing that one begins to notice in DaDa is its colourful frames which are mostly close-ups. However, the visual language is incoherent in most scenes of the first half. Some shots impress — like the composition in a shot where a drunk Mani, ridden with guilt and shame, looks down as he passes Sindhu in the doorway — but then, there are also some handheld close-ups that look rather amateurish.

The writing, on the other hand, only solidifies. There are some really enjoyable, heart-melting touches in the second act. For instance, in the days after the baby’s birth and Sindhu’s disappearance, the focus is fixed on how Mani is grappling with this sudden turn of events and it is only after a stranger talks to Mani and asks about it do we get the details of the baby’s biological sex and name (they name him Aadhithya, as Sindhu and Mani had earlier agreed). In any usual case, these details would have taken more priority. Here, both the audience and Mani have been following these sudden turbulent events that happen over two days, and it’s as if such details are either passed without notice or are lost in the overwhelming nature of the situation.

DaDa comes into its own in this second act, as a feel-good drama about a father and a son with ample doses of comedy (Harish K’s character Amit and VTV Ganesh’s cameo bring in the much-needed levity). However, just as we settle down and begin to expect more from this emotional story about this father and son, the film begins to travel in some tried-and-tested areas. It’s not a surprise to anyone that Sindhu will make a comeback into the film — the very set-up of the character was such that it was obvious. But, unfortunately, Aadhithya is nowhere to be seen for some time and what follows is rather too easy to predict. An important scene featuring K Bhagyaraj and Aishwarya Bhaskaran (who play Mani’s parents) proves to be necessary but it also feels like it has been fit forcefully into proceedings.

What saves the film during these mediocre portions are the performances by Kavin and Aparna Das. Kavin, in fact, gets more opportunities than Aparna to give show his varied skillset, and he is most impressive when he shows vulnerability. Watch out for this sequence set around an orphanage — help from background score aside, Kavin goes from minimal to maximal in a linear stroke with much ease and conviction.

Kavin and Aparna Das in a still from ‘DaDa’

Kavin and Aparna Das in a still from ‘DaDa’ | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement

It’s safe to say that Kavin is a promising star in the making, and a character like Manikandan is just what he needed. Yes, like a conventional commercial cinema hero, he gets to drunk-dance in a soup song and even becomes a saviour to many characters. He also gets a harmless call-back to his breakout hit film Lift . But none of these turns out to be a disturbance; they also don’t disturb the tone as most of these get a humorous twist somewhere and it goes well with the film’s treatment of juxtaposing comedy and drama. Importantly, Kavin’s Manikandan is a very flawed character who does and says some unforgivable things and is made to face the consequences of his mistakes.

In more than a few places, the performances and the music by Jen Martin leave you teary-eyed. Most of the emotional beats land well, and if only for a bit more novelty in how the story progresses, DaDa might have become more than what it settled to be. It nevertheless is an effort that is definitely worth a watch.

DaDa Movie Review: Kavin, Aparna Das' film is thoughtful and effective

Director ganesh k babu's dada, starring kavin and aparna das, is a feel-good family drama that is quite sensitive. with good performances and funny moments, dada is a pick for this week. read our review..

Listen to Story

DaDa hit the theatres on February 10.

  • DaDa is directed by Ganesh K Babu.
  • Kavin and Aparna Das play lead roles in the film.
  • DaDa graced the theatres on February 10.

Release Date: 10 Feb, 2023

When a creator tells the story of two lovers, rarely does the film find the right balance in portraying both characters. In most cases, the screenplay tends to take the side of the guy or the girl. Pradeep Ranganathan’s largely successful Love Today also sparked a similar conversation about the portrayal of the man and the woman in the relationship. However, DaDa is one film that has managed to capture the balance to a large extent.

Manikandan (Kavin) and Sindhu (Aparna Das) are final year college students. They are totally in love with each other. Sindhu gets pregnant accidentally and refuses to abort the baby. When Mani and Sindhu live together through monetary issues, cracks develop between them. Due to an unexpected incident, Mani is forced to be a single father. The rest of the film focuses on the struggles that Mani goes through. Whether Mani and Sindhu will get together forms the rest of the story.

Director Ganesh K Babu’s DaDa has weaved a heartfelt story that is layered and addresses a lot of issues. More importantly, the filmmaker decides to do away with the melodrama while dealing with the sensitive topic of parenting. The lead characters, Mani and Sindhu, are flawed. They are facing a cash and emotional crunch while expecting a new baby. This constant pressure makes the relationship grow bitter. The character arcs of both characters are shown beautifully.

Later, when Manikandan becomes a parent, we are shown how he grows as a person and a father. From knowing nothing about taking care of a baby to becoming a single parent, the journey is quite heartwarming. DaDa also has some nice fun stretches - courtesy Harish, Pradeep Antony and VTV Ganesh in a cameo.

DaDa is not a film without flaws. One of the major advantages of the film is that the positives outnumber the flaws. Certain clichéd dialogues could have been avoided. Also, the screenplay takes a predictable approach towards the second half.

Kavin and Aparna Das are perfect as Manikandan and Sindhu. Their performances are the backbone of the film. Kudos to Ganesh K Babu for writing solid characters for the supporting actors as well. Bhagyaraj and Aishwarya, as parents, have a decent character arc as well.

Director Ezhil Arasu K’s frames are enjoyable on the big screen. Jen Martin’s music and songs amplify the emotions in most of the sequences.

DaDa is a heartwarming film that talks about parenting and relationship woes.

'Dada' review: A well-written drama made with plenty of heart

Director Ganesh K Babu’s debut Dada revolves around an unplanned pregnancy. The story of the film isn’t path-breaking by any means, but what makes it enjoyable is the soulful treatment and witty writing. Take, for instance, the traditional confrontation scene of the lead characters.

Ganesh adds a pinch of realism to the sequence by having the heroine’s voice shake in fatigue, given that she has cried for hours; the hero, on the other hand, is too angry to pay attention to her. At one point, he interrupts her to say, “ Nee solradhu enakku puriyala; niruthi ozhunga sollu !” The scene may not offer tremendous insight, but attention to these little details makes the conversation relatable and grounded—and you can find this throughout the film.

Dada is almost like a marriage between a Radha Mohan film and a Selavaraghavan film. We have cute conversations between a father and his four-year-old about the educational system; we also have the shot of a girl biting the shoulders of her boyfriend in passion.

In the hands of an inferior writer, Kavin’s Manikandan might have ended up being the pinnacle of toxic masculinity and Aparna’s Sindhu would have been the sacrificing angel. But Ganesh makes it clear that Mani is not a brute and Sindhu is no angel. The characters are flawed in their own ways, and in their vulnerable moments, they confess their mistakes and wish things were different.

Recent Tamil cinema has featured heroes who seem immune to failure. Even when they fall, the elevation happens within seconds. Things, however, are different in Dada.

The much-desired redemption in Manikandan’s life gets delayed. He takes three or four blows on his face from life before rising above his situation. Even though his life-changing job offer comes through a recommendation, much like in Velaiyilla Pattathari, here, the win feels personal as we have seen Mani toil enough.

The film is emotional but is equally fun with a strong undercurrent of tasteful humour. When Mani and Sindhu feel that they have hit rock bottom and talk about finding a new rental house, a guy playing PUBG on his phone interrupts them: “ Ipdiye ovvoru veeda maari saava poreenga da !”

The overwhelming pathos gets quickly transformed into quality dark humour. Such good writing is ably handled by its impressive cast. While Kavin and Aparna pour in much life into the characters, supporting cast members like Harish Kumar seize their opportunities too.

Director Ganesh’s Dada can be processed as the story of a man’s pursuit of peace. The film opens and ends with a shot of Manikandan sleeping peacefully. Similarly, the story can also be seen as his quest to become a complete man, and a man who isn’t above crying. Though he proudly claims that he has never shed a tear in his life initially, he breaks down at two crucial places. That he isn’t alone in shedding tears during those vulnerable moments, speaks of this film’s power to affect.

DaDa review: Enjoyable coming-of-age drama about accidental parenthood

Dada movie review: kavin and aparna das-starrer rises above mainstream movies and sends out a strong message on parenthood. directed by ganesh k babu, the film focuses on a young man and his journey of becoming a doting father..

The subject of parenthood, especially in mainstream cinema, has mostly been told from the perspective of a woman. Rarely, we’ve had a film where the story has focused on a man dealing with parenthood and his sacrifices in becoming a good father. Ganesh K Babu’s DaDa is an emotional drama about a young man dealing with becoming a parent, out of the blue, with a lot of maturity. This is also a moving coming-of-age drama of an aimless, college-going youngster thrust into embracing fatherhood when the entire world, including his family, has given up on him.

Actor Kavin in a still image from Dada.

Watch trailer here:

The film opens with the shot of Kavin and Aparna lying together. Kavin is still sleeping and Aparna just enjoys looking at him while we hear a couple in the neighboring flat arguing early in the morning. Cut to the next shot, Aparna is crying as learns that she’s pregnant and Kavin suggests that she should abort the baby as they aren’t ready to be parents yet. Aparna is against the idea of abortion. Kavin and Aparna decide to move in together and take refuge at a friend’s house. As they get ready to embrace parenthood, living together becomes a hassle as they end fighting over little things. It reaches a point where Kavin blames Aparna for making their lives so miserable when he warned her about keeping the baby. Kavin is forced to raise the baby alone.

The most refreshing aspect of DaDa is that it sends out a very important message loud and clear – parenthood is gender neutral. Both father as well as the mother play key parts in raising a kid and their roles can’t be weighed or compared. As much as the film sheds light on Kavin raising his son alone and in turn becoming a better person as well as a father, it doesn’t try to showcase the mother in poor light. This aspect of the film and the writing is highly appreciable. It also never tries to make the father raising a kid alone a big deal. Even at a crucial juncture in the movie when Kavin and Aparna cross paths again, that moment is treated sensibly. The writing deserves a lot of praise as the film stays away from predictable moments.

As much as DaDa is emotional at times, it’s also thoroughly enjoyable thanks to the use of humour to lighten the mood. The situational comedy works in a big way to keep the entertainment factor ticking throughout the movie. Both Kavin and Aparna are great fit for their respective parts. Kavin comes across a major surprise as he’s someone who’s relatively new but embraces this character with strong understanding and plays it confidently. From the initial helplessness of becoming a father to slowly understanding his role and his responsibility towards his kid, Kavin sells his transformation so competently.

Director: Ganesh K Babu

Cast: Kavin, Aparna Das and K. Bhagyaraj

Dada Movie Review: Theatrical Treat For Kavin Fans; He Becomes The Most Wanted Young Hero Of Tamil Cinema!

Just like making jokes about the difficulties we face in our normal life, in this film too director ganesh k babu has impressed the audience by sprinkling laughter in difficult times..

Dada Movie Review

Dada is a film starring actor Kavin who has made his mark from the small screen to the silver screen. In this, Kavin is cast as the hero in the role of Manikandan. Aparna Das has played the role of Sindhu opposite him. Here is the full review of Dada, a film based on father-son affection.

Dada Movie Review

Hero Manikandan (Kavin) comes as an irresponsible college student who doesn't listen to his parents, doesn't study well. He falls in love with fellow student Sindhu (Aparna Das). Sindhu unexpectedly becomes pregnant. Sindhu does not listen to Kavin's request to abort the child, so both leave the house and get married.

Dada Movie Review

Mani, even after marriage, is profligate and comes home drunk. During a fight, the hero who goes away saying "you die" switches off the phone when his wife calls in labor pain. As a result, Sindhu, who gave birth to the baby, leaves him at the hospital and goes with her parents.

Dada Movie Review

The entire responsibility of bringing up the child falls on Mani. He has been a prodigal and irresponsible person until then. He tries to be a good father to his child. He spends days trying not to show his child to his wife. He unexpectedly meets her after 4 years. Will Mani forgive his wife? Why did Sindhu leave the child? A beautiful answer to many such questions is the climax of the film Dada.

Dada Movie Review

Just as the father-daughter affection was beautifully and profoundly expressed in Thanga Meengal, the father-son affection is tenderly expressed in this film as well. As Manikandan, Kavin takes his chances and scores well. He makes the fans' eyes wet especially in the love fight scenes and in the climactic hand to mouth crying scenes. Aparna Das, who made the audience happy despite her brief appearance in the film, acts like a second pillar for Dada. Although the story revolves only around her and Kavin, it seems that she did not get much 'screen space'. Her disappearance for 20 minutes in the film could be the reason for that.

Dada Movie Review

Bhakyaraj and Aishwarya keep our parents in front of our eyes even if it's only for a short while. Aishwarya stands in mind as a wife who does not cross the line set by her husband, even though she trembles as a mother hearing her son's voice. VTV Ganesh in the film is a well-wisher who gives advice and sometimes comes as a comedy punch line speaker to make the audience laugh. Child Artist Advik, who plays Kavin's son, is a great find of the year. A thousand kisses can be given only to the Tamil he speaks. Pradeep Antony and Harish Kumar stand out as supporting characters. All the songs of the film are heart touching. Especially the song 'Thaayaaga Naan' about affection for son makes us melt. Jen Martin did a great job. Just like making jokes about the difficulties we face in our normal life, in this film too director Ganesh K Babu has impressed the audience by sprinkling laughter in difficult times. His realistic comedy dialogues and the way he carried the story attracts the fans. Although the story is predictable, it doesn't seem like a big drawback due to the neat screenplay. All in all, if you want to watch a feel good emotional movie on the weekend with your family, go for Dada. You will love it.

DADA MOVIE REVIEW

Dada (aka) Daada review

Dada is a film written by Ganesh K Babu and produced by Ambeth Kumar under the banner Olympia Movies. It stars Kavin and Aparna Das in the lead roles while Bhagyaraj, VTV Ganesh, Pradeep Antony, Harish Kumar, and others play supporting roles. The music is composed by Jen Martin, and the camera is handled by Ezhil Arasu K.

Manikandan (Kavin) is a careless young college student with no foresight about the future. He is in love with Sindhu (Aparna Das), and one day she reveals that she's pregnant. He wants to abort the child but Sindhu wants to keep it. They end up going with her choice, but Mani's irresponsible nature results in Sindhu leaving their baby with Manikandan, and running away from him. He is forced to raise the child - Adithya, all alone. The film deals with the struggles he has to go through in raising Adithya, and how his life changes for the better.

With Dada, one can see how well Kavin has matured as an actor. Not just with his performances but also with his choice of scripts. In a way, one can call this the answer to what would happen if Preethi from Arjun Reddy handed over the baby to Arjun Reddy, asking him to raise it all alone. The only difference is that Manikandan is not as abusive as Arjun.

It is indeed a responsible choice to not make Sindhu look like the villain and give proper justification for her decisions. Despite not having a villain as such, the film is breezy and engaging to an extent. The initial portions of the first half are what negatively affect the film. There are plenty of songs, and they end up becoming speed breakers to an already slow screenplay.

There are plenty of supporting characters who make their entry at various stages of the film and each one makes their mark in their own way. In particular, Harish Kumar is delightful as Manikandan's friend Amit. In the second half, Manikandan's teammates in the office also shoulder the film really well and offer proper support to Kavin through their performances. Aparna Das also comes up with a measured performance as Sindhu.

The film has first-timers as its technical crew, but the quality of their work doesn't show that. Jen Martin's background score is top-notch, and the songs are pleasant to hear. It is just the placement that doesn't sit well. Ezhil Arasu's cinematography does justice to Ganesh K Babu's story and elevates the film in a lot of places. He also works in tandem with editor Kathiresh Alagesan.

Overall, Dada is a sweet feel-good romantic comedy with engagement issues in the first half. The film has its heart in the right place and that powers the film throughout. Technically too the film has a certain quality and that is maintained till the last frame. The humour works out wonderfully in many places and that also helps the film a lot. A harmless watch for the weekend.

Dada Movie Review: A well-written drama made with plenty of heart

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).

Director Ganesh K Babu's debut Dada revolves around an unplanned pregnancy. The story of the film isn't path-breaking by any means, but what makes it enjoyable is the soulful treatment and witty writing. Take, for instance, the traditional confrontation scene of the lead characters. Ganesh adds a pinch of realism to the sequence by having the heroine’s voice shake in fatigue, given that she has cried for hours; the hero, on the other hand, is too angry to pay attention to her. At one point, he interrupts her to say, " Nee solradhu enakku puriyala; niruthi ozhunga sollu !" The scene may not offer tremendous insight, but attention to these little details makes the conversation relatable and grounded—and you can find this throughout the film. Cast: Kavin, Aparna Das, Pradeep Antony, Harish Kumar Director: Ganesh K Babu

Dada is almost like a marriage between a Radha Mohan film and a Selavaraghavan film. We have cute conversations between a father and his four-year-old about the educational system; we also have the shot of a girl biting the shoulders of her boyfriend in passion. In the hands of an inferior writer, Kavin's Manikandan might have ended up being the pinnacle of toxic masculinity and Aparna's Sindhu would have been the sacrificing angel.

Things, however, are different in Dada . The much-desired redemption in Manikandan's life gets delayed.

When Mani and Sindhu feel that they have hit rock bottom and talk about finding a new rental house, a guy playing PUBG on his phone interrupts them: " Ipdiye ovvoru veeda maari saava poreenga da! " The overwhelming pathos gets quickly transformed into quality dark humour. Such good writing is ably handled by its impressive cast. While Kavin and Aparna pour in much life into the characters, supporting cast members like Harish Kumar seize their opportunities too.

Director Ganesh's Dada can be processed as the story of a man's pursuit of peace.

Thanks to ample support from its lead actors, debutant director Ganesh K Babu’s film about a single father and a fractured relationship turns out to be a wholesome entertainer despite few missteps.

The long-winded and sappy drama Dada is supposed to be about a single father being the only caretaker for his son for the first four years of the son's life. But the movie spends too much time showing his job problems and not enough father-son bonding.

Ganesh K Babu’s debut film is a restrained yet beautiful take on the many joys and complexities of parenthood.

DADA Review - A Wholesome Emotional Entertainer!

PUBLISHED DATE : 09/Feb/2023

DADA Review - A Wholesome Emotional Entertainer!

DADA is a life-drama starring Kavin and Aparna Das in the lead roles. It is directed by debutant Ganesh K Babu and the project is bankrolled by Olympia Movies.

Kavin and Aparna Das are in a relationship, there happens to be an accidental pregnancy when they are in their early 20s. After a series of struggles, a baby boy is born but the mother goes missing. What happens in their lives after that forms the remaining story.

Writing/ Direction

The film starts on a promising note with a very natural lengthy conversation between the leads, more of a proper establishment for both the characters . But then it’s followed with a few incomplete scenes, despite the situations being vital. We eventually get to connect with their lives as we get to see more of them. There is a crucial breaking point after the baby is born and we are left with tears. The writing is very meticulous and meaningful, either we see an emotional stretch or an entertaining one. The way things have been brought on-screen is also beautiful and works commercially at the same time. There are several heart touching scenes in the movie as the subject and the people in it are relatably presented. It is hard to specify the arc of the story within a boundary as it is life, one thing is that the engagement is very much alive throughout the film. There are no big dull moments till the halfway mark, especially the interval point is a terrific theatre moment. The second half is enjoyable as well, but the flow has a few not-so-necessary angles that are conveyed which occupies quite some time. The latter is still very decently made, but can’t deny the fact that it could have been crisper. Also, I wish it could’ve concentrated more on the lead pair and their conflicts rather than going wider. The incompleteness which was there in the initial portions of the film exist here too. Nevertheless the director is aware of the audience pulse and has created plenty of trendy office backdrop moments. There is a simple yet convincing justification which is revealed towards the end, paving way for the heartfelt climax. Soulful and clap-worthy dialogues are present all over the film which make it more lively.

Performances

Kavin has the potential to be the next big thing in Kollywood. He can emote nicely, be effortlessly natural on-screen and he has delivered a mature performance by understanding the thick of his character. Importantly, here he plays the role of a youngster with whom one can easily relate to, which makes him very likable. Aparna Das is decent as well, she is subtle and has given what is required for her role. Some of the supporting characters have also done well, with newbies doing the trick with the comedy quotient. VTV Ganesh’s counters click and he too gets a delicately made moving moment. The scene with K Bhagyaraj and Aishwariyaa Bhaskaran is so deep, justifying their presence in the subject. The kid is so cute, he has a bunch of sensible and sweet moments which helps the audience to fall in love with him.

Technicalities

The songs are very good, just at the first listen. The lyrics are excellently written, helping us to understand the situations deeper which the director has attempted to convey musically. Lovely background score, every single scene is improved to several notches better through soul-stirring music. Great camera work in and out, absolutely nothing to complain about, especially some tight close up shots add so much value and make the scenes more impactful. Neatly edited too, yes the second half could have been trimmed a bit, the presentation is overall admirable.

There are a few incomplete sequences in the first hour and the latter being a bit lengthy. Otherwise,  It’s a solidly written soulful film and full of life. A thoroughly gripping tale with an ample amount of heart touching and fun filled scenes.

Director Ganesh K Babu comes up with a refreshing, entertaining film titled Dada that revolves around a man who ends up becoming a single parent, not by choice but because of circumstances.

This is the story of Manikandan (Kavin) who is in a relationship with his collegemate Sindhu (Aparna Das).

One day, as fate would have it, Sindhu realises that she is pregnant with Manikandan’s child. A stunned Manikandan asks her to abort it while she is all for keeping it.

Eventually, she has her way and the couple decides to have the child.  All hell breaks loose as soon as their parents get to know that Sindhu is pregnant.

Their parents disown them and it is left to Manikandan, who is still in college and struggles to make ends meet, to provide for Sindhu.

He goes through a lot of trouble to keep her comfortable and happy. However, when she is in her advanced stages of pregnancy, the couple fights over a costly gift that Sindhu demands at her friend’s wedding.

Annoyed with her demand, Manikandan leaves for his workplace in a huff. As fate would have it, Sindhu gets labour pain soon after he leaves and tries calling him. However, an angry Manikandan does not take her call.

Sindhu then calls her father who comes and gets her admitted to the hospital where she delivers a baby boy.

When Manikandan learns of what happened, he rushes to the hospital only to find his baby lying there unattended.

Initially, he thinks of leaving the child at an orphanage. But then, he does not have the heart to do so and decides to raise the child himself.

As the child begins to grow, Manikandan begins to look out for better opportunities to provide more for his son. He constantly is on the lookout and finally, manages to secure placement in a top IT firm.

Just when he thinks that life has finally decided to be kind to him, he gets to meet his new manager who is none other than Sindhu.

Wins our hearts

The film narrates a heartwarming and inspiring tale of a man, a boy, and the adorable relationship they share.

The story not only shows how much difficult it is for a man to take care of a newborn but also portrays how, despite the difficulties, it is done without any hullabaloo.

Director Ganesh K Babu shatters the myth and the perception that a man cannot bring up a child on his own.

From finding a woman to breastfeed his child for a sum, every time he is hungry, to carrying the infant to college, Manikandan does everything without complaint or regret. Needless to say, all these sequences win your heart.

The characterisation of Manikandan, in particular, is what impresses us the most in Dada .

The transformation from being an irresponsible college student to turning into a committed and responsible dad is just fantastic.

Also, the calm, collected manner in which he handles everybody around him – from his dad (who once kicked him out of his home) to his team member in the office (who falls in love with him) and Sindhu (who always keeps jumping to wrong conclusions about him) – is just admirable.

Kavin scores handsomely in this complete family entertainer that has a generous dose of humour as well. He plays the part with such conviction that he begins to own it.

Aparna Das comes up with a neat, commendable performance that matches Kavin’s move for move.

The film also has decent performances coming from VTV Ganesh and Harish Kumar.

Jen Martin’s music is a big plus as are cinematographer Ezhil Arasu’s visuals.

On the whole, Dada is an adorable film that wins your heart.

Ganesh K Babu

Kavin, Aparna Das, K. Bhagyaraj, Aishwarya Bhaskaran, VTV Ganesh

Dada Movie Review:

Dada Movie Review:
