Writing is a valuable skill, but  creative writing  is an art. In creative writing camps, children will get a unique chance to sharpen their tools under the guidance of professional writers. Skills like editing, creating characters, collaborating with peers, and trying their hand at many genres will be covered and practiced. All work and no play can be dull, so many of the camps also take the students out to visit outside attractions that are writing themed or full of inspiration. Camps like  Duke University-Young Writer's Camp  offers exciting projects like newspaper writing, short stories, and facing the challenge of sharing work with their peers. Many genres are covered, like poetry and playwriting, so whatever your child's interest, it can be delved into. Another camp,  Emerging Writer's Institute  has a two-week summer program, where students get an opportunity to be guided into creating publish-worthy pieces through daily writing workshops and get to go on day trips to things like the Berkeley poetry walk and the birthplace of beat poets in San Francisco.  Creating their own written masterpieces, not only expands a child's mind and imagination, but gives them important life skills that they will need in the future, during school and in their careers. They will have the support and help of teachers who are passionate about the craft and will help nurture the students into blossoming and talented writers. For more competitive writers, there is the  your word Teen Creative Writing Residency,  with only 21 writers selected. Teens will strengthen skills, as well as take part in classes given by Master Writers in poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Undoubtedly, this chance could catapult a young writer into the job that they dream of, or at the very least let them enjoy the company of other teens who share their passion.

Camps with Friends

art sleepaway camp

The ultimate guide to thriving at an arts sleepaway camp this summer.

Summer is the perfect time for kids and teens to explore their passions at an arts sleepaway camp . Whether you're interested in theater, music, dance, visual arts, or creative writing, an arts camp is a great place to immerse yourself in your craft, meet like-minded friends, and make memories that will last far beyond the summer.

Choose a Camp That Focuses on Your Interests

The first step to having an amazing experience at an arts camp is choosing one that aligns with your interests and talents. If you love singing and playing guitar, find a music camp. If you're into acting and performing, look for a theater camp. And if you have a variety of artistic interests, many camps offer programs in multiple disciplines. Do some research on camps in your area to find one that's the best fit for you.

Prepare Ahead of Time

Once you choose a sleep away summer camp , start preparing for your experience. Pack clothes, bedding, toiletries, any equipment related to your activities, and anything else you'll need to feel comfortable away from home. You should also practice your skills before camp starts. If it's a music camp, rehearse any pieces you want to perform. If it's an art camp, work on developing your portfolio. The more you prepare, the more confident you'll feel jumping into activities at camp.

You'll also want to go in with an open and enthusiastic attitude. Even if you're nervous about being away from home or meeting new people, do your best to be positive and friendly. Having the right mindset can make a world of difference in your experience at camp. With the combination of preparation and a great attitude, you'll be set up for an amazing summer at arts camp!

Get Involved in All Activities

The key to having a rewarding experience at camp is full participation. Take advantage of all the activities, classes, workshops, and events offered at your camp. Try new things and step outside your comfort zone. You'll discover new talents and passions, gain valuable experience, and form tighter bonds with your fellow campers and counselors.

While it's normal to feel some homesickness, especially if it's your first time at sleepaway camp , staying active and engaged in camp activities is the best remedy. You'll be so busy having fun with new friends that you won't have time to miss home! An open and enthusiastic attitude paired with full participation will lead to an unforgettable summer at arts camp.

Make Memories and Friendships That Last

An arts camp experience is a perfect opportunity to create memories and friendships that extend beyond the summer. Take the time to truly connect with your fellow campers who share your interests and passions. Exchange contact information so you can stay in touch year-round.

The tight-knit community feel of camp, combined with a shared love of the arts, cultivates the ideal environment for forming lifelong bonds with like-minded people. Don't be afraid to get to know your fellow campers on a deeper level. The relationships you build at camp could blossom into meaningful, long-term friendships.

Years later, you'll look back fondly on your summer at arts camp, grateful for the memories you made and the friendships that started there. An open and enthusiastic attitude, full participation in camp activities, and meaningful connections with others will lead to an unforgettable experience and lifelong benefits. With the right mindset and preparation, you'll be set up for success at your arts sleepaway camp this summer!

Apply Your New Skills and Experience

One of the biggest benefits of attending an arts camp is gaining valuable experience in your craft. You'll learn new skills through hands-on activities, workshops, and mentorship from experienced counselors. Put these new skills to use when you return home from camp.

If you attended a theater camp, audition for your school play or join a local youth theater group. If you went to a music camp, start a band with friends or perform at open mics in your area. For visual arts camps, create an online portfolio to share your work or look for opportunities to showcase your art locally. The opportunities are endless!

The experience you gain at camp will give you a boost of confidence in your talents and set you up for success in your artistic pursuits going forward. An arts sleepaway camp can be life-changing, providing inspiration and experience that shapes your interests and passions for years to come. With an open mind and enthusiasm for learning, you'll gain valuable skills and confidence in your craft, make cherished memories, and form friendships that last far beyond your summer at camp.

Continue Exploring Your Interests

An arts camp experience often ignites a passion for learning and cultivating new talents. Don't let that spark fade when camp ends - keep pursuing your interests! Take additional classes in your area of focus, start a blog or YouTube channel to share your work, join online communities to connect with others, and look for internship opportunities to gain more experience.

The summer you spend at arts camp is just the beginning. Use it as a launching point to continue improving your skills and exploring your passions. With an open and enthusiastic attitude, the experiences and relationships you gain at camp can positively impact your life for years to come. A rewarding path of lifelong learning and growth awaits you - start your journey this summer at arts sleepaway camp!

Make the Most of Your Summer at Arts Camp!

Attending an arts sleepaway camp is a perfect way for kids and teens to spend the summer. With an open and enthusiastic attitude, you'll gain valuable experience, discover new passions, make cherished memories, and form friendships that last beyond camp.

What is Badgerdog Creative Writing Camp?

For more than 10 years, Badgerdog's Creative Writing Summer Camp has given Austin youth a space to fall in love with writing, discover authentic self-expression, learn from a professional writer, and publish original work.

Each spring break and summer, Badgerdog hosts writing workshops for rising 3rd- through 12th-graders. These fun and challenging workshops allow students to work closely with a professional writer as they explore the arts of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and playwriting. All campers experience the joy of reading, writing, and sharing their original work.

At the end of the summer, all camp students will have their work published in one of two professionally produced anthologies: "Rise," for elementary-aged writers, and "Emerge," for middle- and high-school writers. In the fall, Badgerdog hosts a Young Authors Reading & Anthology Launch, where selected campers perform their work and celebrate the launch of the anthologies.

All workshops will be capped at 15 students per workshop. Our traditional three-week camps will include fun exercises in poetry, fiction, and revision. We also offer Book Crushes, a camp that features a specific book that campers will read through together, and Genre Workshops, which cover one specific topic in writing.

Badgerdog Summer Camp Workshops are labeled according to the grade that students will be entering in the fall. You will see the following workshops on the registration site:

  • Lower Elementary School: campers who will be entering 3rd + 4th grade in the fall
  • Upper Elementary School: campers who will be entering 5th + 6th grade in the fall
  • Middle School Workshop: campers who will be entering 7th + 8th grade in the fall
  • High School Workshop: campers who will be entering 9th - 12th grade in the fall

Parents say Badgerdog helps kids and teens write with greater skill, comfort, and enthusiasm. Campers say Badgerdog helps them find confidence and play in the writing process. Read about camper Anya Van Arnam's evolution as a writer through Badgerdog  here in the Cedar Park High School Paper .

Frequently Asked Questions

At the end of the summer, all three-week summer camp students will have their work published in one of two professionally produced anthologies—Rise, for elementary-aged writers, and Emerge, for middle- and high-school writers. In the fall, Badgerdog hosts a Young Authors Reading & Anthology Launch, where selected campers perform their work and celebrate the launch of the anthologies. All summer camp writers are invited to attend!

Can Any Young Writer Attend? Of course! Both eager and reluctant writers find Badgerdog’s workshops engaging and empowering. Our creative approach to the craft of writing allows hesitant writers to practice an essential skill in a no-fail, supportive environment—while also having fun! For more advanced writers, Badgerdog’s teaching artists provide challenges and offer personalized feedback.

If your child has dyslexia, dysgraphia, ASD we can accommodate your child. We’ve heard from parents of other campers with these challenges that Badgerdog is an ideal place to practice writing and learn new skills. We ensure that campers feel encouraged to continue trying, experimenting, finding their voices. We welcome technology that makes writing easier and more accessible for campers. We want to avoid the use of smart phones or anything that may distract other campers, but otherwise such devices are encouraged. Our registration form will allow you to share information about your child with us so we can provide tailored support, or you can contact our Programs Coordinator to discuss questions or concerns before signing up. Refund Policy:  Full refunds, minus a $50 processing fee, will be granted for requests made more than 30 days prior to the start of the summer session. A partial refund of two-thirds of the registration cost will be granted for requests made between 7 to 30 days prior to the start of the workshop's session. Refunds are not granted for requests made within 7 days of the start of the workshop. Prorated rates and daily drop-in rates are not available for summer camps.

Early Bird Discount: A 10% discount will be applied to summer camp registration before March 1. Use discount code: earlybird  at checkout.

Sibling & Friend Discounts:  Parents registering more than one camper at the same time for the same grade-level workshop will automatically receive a 5% discount per registration. Parents registering siblings for separate grade-level workshops can enter code  siblings  to receive 5% off. This discount can not be used with other discounts and will be available after the early bird discount expires on March 1.

Scholarships : A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available. Scholarships are open to rising 3rd-12th graders who demonstrate financial need and a commitment to writing. Students need not consider themselves “excellent writers” (or even “good writers”) in order to apply. We are most interested in a student’s willingness to grow as a writer and to become part of a community dedicated to learning together. Due to a high demand, scholarships will be limited to one workshop per applicant. Follow this link to complete a scholarship application form.

What do Parents and Campers Say About Summer Camp?

  • 66% of campers say they like writing more as a result of Badgerdog.
  • 71% of campers say they are better writers as a result of Badgerdog.
  • When asked how campers felt when writing, 94% used a positive phrase, such as "energized," "alive like a bird," "like I have a workable outlet for all of my ideas," or "like a balloon of happiness has just gotten blown up inside me.

What do campers like most about Badgerdog?

  • small, supportive classes
  • expressing themselves without being judged
  • hearing other classmates share their work

creative writing sleepaway camp

  • meeting new friends and fellow authors
  • the creative ways "we learned to write"

Here's what we heard from parents:

  • 92% of parents say Badgerdog has a positive impact on their children's writing skills.
  • 94% say Badgerdog has a positive effect on their children's attitudes toward writing.

We asked parents to identify the most significant positive effect of summer camp:

  • "Attending Badgerdog  was the best activity C. participated in this summer. I was so impressed with the high quality of his instructor. The class was well-organized, with engaging, creative activities each day. And she created a safe space for C. to do something he finds pretty terrifying -- explore his own talent. It's a mark of how safe he felt that he actually participated in the end-of-camp reading with very little resistance."
  • "Badgerdog drastically reduced writing reluctance, increased writing fluency, and increased interest in sharing writing with others."
  • "The green light for self-expression."
  • "Having a positive experience with a subject my child doesn't like."
  • "It was great seeing and hearing my daughter describe each day of camp -- what she did in class, seeing her so enthusiastic about writing and speaking."
  • "Exposure to different forms of writing. My older child was only interested in writing novels before attending camp, and this experience really opened her eyes to other forms."
  • "Excitement about being published and having a 'real' author work with my daughter."
  • "My daughter is dyslexic and has always been very negative about writing. However, she has had only positive things to say about her experience at camp."

It's All in the Process

As you develop as a writer over the course of three weeks, you may want to share your work. One great venue for doing this is Caf Kent, our on-campus evening coffee house series where youll show your friends and teachers what youve created. In addition to spoken word, Caf Kent showcases individual and group performances that can include music, comedy, dance and theater.

The Visiting Artists Series introduces you to other artistic disciplines through a four-part series of performances and workshops. Our Visiting Artists will explore with you the creative process and connections among the arts. Working in a variety of art forms, including music, dance and visual arts, theyll challenge you to take creative risks, experiment and improvise.

On Visiting Writers Day, campers have the unique opportunity to meet with and learn from several dynamic authors. These professional writers spend the day at Kent working with campers in small groups.  Each writer leads an interactive seminar during Morning Workshop and in the afternoon, visiting writers and students participate together in a reading for the camp community.

Theater Day Trips and Recreational Outings

On the second and third Sundays of camp, well hop a bus for an exciting day trip to a nearby theater or other recreational venue. Recent summer performances have included productions at Shakespeare and Co. in Lennox, Mass. and the Powerhouse Summer Theater at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
