‘Business Proposal’: Meet the Cast and Their Best K-Drama Roles
Sometimes the best romances are the unintentional ones. Netflix’s Korean drama Business Proposal is sweeping fans off their feet with its K-drama storyline and main cast. Die-hard K-drama fans would easily recognize its leading actors, Kim Se-jeong and Ahn Hyo-seop . But for newcomers who have become obsessed with the actors, here is every K-drama they have made themselves known for.
‘Business Proposal’ cast member Seol In-ah starred in a hit historical K-drama
In Business Proposal , Seol In-ah plays the leading role of Jin Young-seo, a chaebol heiress and Marketing Team Leader of Marine Beauty. She is the best friend of the main character Shin Ha-ri. K-drama fans have seen Seol in many other well-recognized dramas.
The actor played the role of Jo Hee-ji in the fan-favorite drama Strong Girl Bong-soon, staring Park Hyung-sik and Park Bo-young. The same year in 2017, she played Hong Nam-joo in School 2017.
It just so happens that Business Proposal cast member Kim starred as the lead. Seol then had roles in Sunny Again Tomorrow , Special Labor Inspector , and Beautiful Love, Wonderful Life . The actor’s most acclaimed role was in the 2020 gender-bending historical K-drama , Mr. Queen.
Seol played the role of Jo Hwa-jin, based on a real historical figure. The character is the male lead’s first love and concubine.
Kim Min-kyu previously starred in Disney+’s ‘Snowdrop’
Actor Kim Min-kyu generated a buzz for himself, starring as a North Korean spy in Disney+’s controversial K-drama , Snowdrop . While the storyline angered some netizens, fans could not help but be impressed by Kim’s role as Joo Gyeok-chan.
Kim has starred in a handful of notable dramas fans have watched or heard highly of. He played Hwang Eui-kyung in Signal , Because This Is My First Life , Just Between Lovers, Queen: Love and War , and Backstreet Rookie .
Kim joined the cast of Business Proposal k-drama as Cha Sung-hoon. The character is Tae-mu’s secretary and chief of staff of GO Foods. He also grew up with Tae-mu. Fans have fallen in love with the handsome actor and his second-lead romance with Young-seo.
Ahn Hyo-seop leads the cast as Kang Tae-mu in ‘Business Proposal’ K-drama
Taking the role of the devilishly handsome and rich CEO of GO Foods is actor Ahn Hyo-seop. Ahn plays the role of Kang Tae-mu, a chaebol heir and Harvard graduate who unknowingly starts to fall for Ha-ri.
Before joining the cast of Business Proposal K-drama, Ahn gained some fame as Park Chul-soo in My Father is Stranger and Yoo Chan in Still 17. His claim to fame among fans is in the medical romance drama Dr. Romantic Season 2 as Seo Woo-jin and Abyss .
The actor’s most recent K-drama was the fantasy historical romance Lovers of the Red Sky . Ahn played the lead as Ha Ram, an astrologer who lost his sight during a demon sealing ritual as a child. He seeks revenge and falls in love with the female lead due to intertwined fate.
Kim Se-jeong is a K-Pop idol turned one of Korea’s popular actors
Kim Hye-yoon’s and the Astounding Female Cast’s Popular K-Drama’s Before ‘Snowdrop’
Before becoming an actor, Kim Se-jeong was a member of the girl group I.O.I. Since the group’s disbandment, Kim has starred in dramas since 2016. Her first leading role was in School 2017 as Ra Eun-ho. Many K-drama fans hold the installment of the School series as a favorite.
In 2019, she starred in a lesser-known drama, I Wanna Hear Your Song . Kim skyrocketed to fame when she starred as Do Ha-na in Netflix’s The Uncanny Counter . In the K-drama, her character is part of a group given special abilities to track down rogue demons.
Accorsing to Soompi , the K-drama was approved to develop a second season. Fans have become enamored with Kim’s comical and kind portrayal of Ha-ri in Business Proposal. The character goes on a blind date to ward off her best friend’s suitor. She learns the blind date is with her boss, Tae-mu.

Park Seon-ho tries to avoid feeling too guilty when it comes to clichés. As the director of Business Proposal , the latest hit South Korean romantic comedy based on a popular webtoon of the same title, he sticks to the principle that “what you’re familiar with works the best.” So instead of forcing change or adding artificial flavors, he tries to portray comfortingly predictable scenes as they are.
For K-drama fans, the plot of the story may indeed ring familiar: An ordinary girl is disguised as her rich friend and meets an arrogant heir of a conglomerate on a blind date at the friend’s request, only to learn that he is the CEO of the company she works for. The two fall in love, and despite the pressures from the boy’s family due to class differences, the couple overcomes hardship and lives happily ever after.

Yet this predictable storyline, which adopts the Cinderella plot with a contemporary corporate-workplace twist, resonated in a huge way with many fans of K-drama. On Netflix , where the series was released globally, Business Proposal was the streamer’s No. 1 non-English series for the third consecutive week as of last week. It was also the third-most-watched Netflix show in the world, behind the first two seasons of Bridgerton .
The Hollywood Reporter talked to director Park to discuss the global success of his latest work and his experiences of working with up-and-coming Korean actors.
This is your third series after Suspicious Partner and Wok of Love. How did you approach Business Proposal , and what was your first impression of the original webtoon?
I also shot a short drama series My Fantastic Funeral , so I’d say Business Proposal is actually my fourth piece. After I completed Wok of Love , I was preparing to work on another project, but it fell through with the pandemic. Right when I started feeling frustrated and disappointed with myself because of the lost time of a full year, a production company reached out to me. The impression I got from my first read of the script was great. I accepted the offer because I knew I could enjoy working on the piece. After I said yes, I read the original webtoon series and got the impression that it was a cute and quirky romantic comedy set in an office. I thought, “This is a piece that audiences can enjoy anytime with peace of mind. It doesn’t give you any headaches, and it’s great for relieving stress.” I tried to expand on those impressions from the original webtoon in my process of dramatizing the series.
In the earlier episodes, it was difficult to understand why Tae-moo couldn’t tell the difference between Ha-ri and Geum-hui. Did you have any concerns about this setup?
I had many thoughts about it. I was at a loss as to what to do about it. ( Laughs .) From Kim Se-jeong’s [Ha-ri’s] point of view, she has to switch from Ha-ri and [the rich friend she’s impersonating] Geum-hui constantly, so the nuances in her acting had to be different. She had to have the basic foundation as a charming lead in a romantic comedy series, while giving variation to her acting style. We gave Geum-hui a more dramatic change in her style, but there were some structural issues to match with that character, so her style had to go through an overhaul again. I communicated with Kim Se-jeong constantly throughout this entire process to build on her opinions, especially in the details in her acting and her overall style. She basically had to prepare for two roles, since she was playing two different characters. I had a lot of thoughts on how the two characters’ relationships with Tae-moo would develop when they met him. With the basics in place for the characters Ha-ri and Geum-hui, the development process was a little bit easier. But I did try to make the flow more natural and the story more realistic since it would have to make sense to the viewers. That’s why we put in scenes where Ha-ri deliberately avoids making eye contact with Tae-moo in the beginning when she encounters him at work. We also added a playful chase scene with her slipper. (We thought it would also be a fun allusion to Cinderella.) Also, we intentionally portrayed Ha-ri as a character who’s very skilled at her job. We made her character likable, but by also highlighting her competence, we emphasized that Tae-moo would be unable to match Ha-ri and Geum-hui because of his very strong impression of Ha-ri as a qualified employee.
Young-seo and Sung-hoon’s relationship is contrasted with the conventional fairy-tale setting of Tae-moo and Ha-ri. How did you want to portray their relationship?
I didn’t think the relationship between Tae-moo and Ha-ri was that conventional either. ( Laughs .) I thought it had some fantasy aspects to it, so in script meetings with the writer, we agreed to make it more realistic and plausible. Romantic comedy as a genre takes aspects of fantasy for granted (especially in the case of Cinderella-format tales) so I wanted to bring some realness to balance out emotions so that viewers wouldn’t have a hard time accepting the story. Young-seo and Sung-hoon’s relationship is the same. I don’t think that falling in love at first sight or the girl pursuing the guy is that out of the ordinary today. I think what makes their relationship special is the way they express their relationship and how they capture their emotions in their acting. I don’t want these two couples to be a stark contrast of each other. People love in different ways, which is the message I wanted to convey.
You added interesting visuals by using animated effects. Whose idea was that?
They all started off as my ideas, and of course our great teams built on it. I focused most on an organic story flow and plausible character emotions. A drama is just a story told using visuals, so I think the story, which is the foundation, is the most important element. That’s why we focused on the overall storyline and the flow of emotions, even though they may not be perfect. Visual effects were used to maintain the integrity of the original webtoon as well. Personally, I like using special visual effects and try to incorporate them where I can. I never use it to compromise the flow of the story or the actors’ performance, though.
What was your first impression of your stars, Ahn Hyo-seop and Kim Se-jeong?
They had great attitudes toward work and understanding their characters. They were diligent. As a producer, I wanted to propel their careers forward so they could build on their stardom as up-and-coming actors. They were both adorable and good at their jobs. At our first meeting, Ahn Hyo-seop was a lot more youthful than I had heard. That’s when I knew that he was the right fit for Tae-moo, not the other way around. I jokingly told him that I wanted to bring out the childish side of him in this series. ( Laughs .) He already had the looks for the part of Tae-moo, so adding on his childlike aspects would bring layers to the character’s complexity. Ahn Hyo-seop as an actor is solid and sincere, so he not only brought out nuanced emotions from the character but also could aptly color Tae-moo’s personality and capture details.
Kim Se-jeong is a former member of a K-pop idol group. Did you have any concerns about her acting experience?
Not at all. In the first meeting, the writers and I were blown away by how Kim prepped and interpreted her character. I knew she had the will and tenacity to develop her character with vigor. She was perfect for us. We talked extensively about the character’s emotions and their styles. She’s a diligent and talented actor. She’s excellent because she knows how to bring out her own emotions. There are some biases to thinking that people from idol groups might be bad actors. If idol stars go into acting, we can judge them by looking at their previous works. We can fathom what kind of possibilities lie ahead for them as actors, and see if producers can elevate that.
Were there any interesting or memorable anecdotes from the set?
We enjoyed most of our time on set. Sure, there were times when we were tired or frustrated, but our great team of staff, actors and good vibes easily compensated for that. There was a concert scene in the show. The male duo singer group MeloMance [a famous Korean group] accepted being featured in the drama and sang live. They must have been exhausted from shooting since they didn’t have much acting experience, but they took on song requests from our supporting actors in between shoots to provide us with live music. Shooting the concert scene actually felt like we were in a concert. Kim Se-jeong even went onstage and sang with them as a duet.
The drama is enjoying global popularity thanks to Netflix. Are you conscious of overseas reception? What do you think is behind the show’s global success?
Of course, I’m conscious of it. I’m human, too. ( Laughs .) People around me keep telling me how this blew up through Netflix. I was floored. Many global fans comment on my Instagram posts and show their support. I’m always very grateful. A drama is based on storytelling. If a story is good, it will resonate with people all over the world. I think that was the secret behind Business Proposal . We took a cliché of a story, tweaked it here and there and made it into an emotional, detail-oriented narrative. The actors’ stellar performances and production staff’s competence helped in delivering the story in a beautiful way — they all came together.
Romance as a genre has its limits in giving variations or transcending beyond the fixed structure. Did you have any principles or rules when you were dealing with conventional compositions or clichés?
It’s such a difficult task. It’s really not easy to keep that fine line between refreshing and conventional. I continued to question myself when it came to dealing with clichés, on whether I was making it too predictable or not. I’m still learning and growing, but I study a lot on how I can deliver a story in a way that makes viewers’ hearts flutter but avoids being obvious. So recently a thought came to me, “let’s just be honest about this” and “what you’re familiar with works best.” Let’s not force change or add artificial flavors. Let’s portray predictable scenes as they are, but add changes within that big frame. Clichés get a bad rep, but when used properly, they’re not to be discarded. That’s how I justified some of the scenes. But I’m still searching for the answer, though I don’t even know if there is such a thing as a right answer. ( Laughs .)
In episode 11, there is a love scene between Tae-moo and Ha-ri. Some pointed out that it came off as random in the flow of the story. Are you happy with the outcome?
I think some people thought that it was random because Tae-moo and Ha-ri were in an innocent relationship where they supported each other emotionally. But from a production point of view, I didn’t want to trap them in this platonic love. They were both adults, so it wasn’t weird that they were doing adult things. Also, at this point of the story, Tae-moo is desperately looking for Ha-ri, and Ha-ri’s feeling is mutual. I know that scene wasn’t for everyone, so I was humbled and reflected on how I have more to learn.
Some aspects of the drama were hardly relatable to young Koreans today, like how the female lead in the drama has to look after her boyfriend’s sick grandfather or the humiliation of seeking approval from his family.
I completely understand. Even as a fictional drama, it can’t veer too far away from the reality of the time period. That’s why I tried to make the narratives and emotional flows of each character organic with no artificial disruptions. I focused on the overall flow to justify the character’s positions — like why she has no choice but to care for the ill grandfather, or why the humiliation was necessary for approval of their marriage — so that viewers wouldn’t ask themselves, “What on earth are these characters doing?”
K-dramas such as Our Beloved Summer and Twenty-Five Twenty-One have also garnered much attention globally. What do you think is the strength behind K-rom-coms?
I watched them, and thought they were both great pieces. My wife really loved both dramas, too. ( Laughs .) The strengths of Korean rom-coms … that’s a very hard question. It would have to be the plausible narrative built from the beginning and the detailed emotional nuances that the screen captures. There are also amazing actors who are skilled at portraying those emotions beautifully. Lastly, the amazing crew bring it all together through tireless work.
This is your first project after leaving SBS (a major Korean broadcaster). What does Business Proposal mean to you personally?
I feel relieved and happy. Business Proposal will probably mean “business” and “proposal” for me. This was my first project as a freelancer after leaving the company, and I’m relieved that it came out well. Also, I was happy to work with great crew and actors in the direction I wanted. Viewers feeling happy from watching the drama was the cherry on top for me. The most important factor for me is the people I work with. Even as I venture into different genres and projects, I want to maintain the warmth, the feelings and the good narratives in each of my projects.

K-Drama Review: “Business Proposal” Delights In Exceptionally Sweet And Comedic Narrative
Gleaming with wondrous moments, business proposal inevitably fulfilled and consoled viewers with its lighthearted series and perfectly synched love pairings..
Highlighting an employee-boss office romance, this drama marks a narrative trope that is familiar nonetheless endearing at the same time. And, it infused spectators with non-stop heart flutters while simultaneously providing hilarious performances from the main leads.
Arriving at the right moment, Tae-mu reassures his grandfather that he is perfectly fine while preventing Shin Ha-ri from departing. He subsequently informs Chairman Kang that he is dating and hopelessly in love with Shin Ha-ri.
“If love is a crime, then yes, I’m a criminal.”
Following her visit to Kang Tae-mu, Ha-ri receives unsettling news from Jin Young-seo. It is a scandal created by Yu-ra , that Ha-ri is two-timing President Kang with her seven-year-old crush on Min-woo.
Surprisingly, Ha-ri refuses to leave the company and proudly professes her love for Kang Tae-mu, believing that falling in love with him is perfectly acceptable.
“I promise I will be always by her side and protect her with everything that I have. I will be someone who stands by her and understands her.”
During Tae-mu’s conversation with Ha’ri’s concerned father, he does not guarantee that his daughter will not be hurt, but he swears to always be by her side and has promised to protect her with his life.
After a year, Cha Sung-hoon helps Jin Young-seo by investing in her own company as she cuts her ties with her father. Meanwhile, Ha-min notifies his sister about a scandal involving Tae-mu, who is rumored to be dating someone in the States.
While walking to the park, considering he doesn’t like wasting his time anymore, Kang Tae-mu proposes to Shin Ha-ri. She enthusiastically accepts, and then Ha-ri and Tae-mu seal the proposal with a kiss.
Business Proposal Quick Plot Recap
On the other hand, Young-seo crosses paths with Tae-mu’s secretary, Cha Sung-hoon ( Kim Min Kyu ), with whom she instantly falls in love.
Business Proposal Series Peak Points
Addicting and meticulous storyline projection.
Considering its conventional narrative of a love interest centered on a rich boss and an ordinary employee, it becomes surprisingly compelling and entertaining due to the series’ excellent direction and writing.
Consistent Parade of Heart Fluttering Romance
From the first few episodes, the two lead couples made single people jealous and craving for romance. That is because the characters’ stories appeared to be genuinely presented as if they were a story based on real-life experiences.
And, of course, Cha Sung-hoon and Jin Young-seo’s moments together as a couple also reflect an equal amount of give and take. Sung-hoon patiently listens to his girlfriend and earnestly explains to her when they have a disagreement.
Kang Tae-mu & Cha Sung-hoon’s Doting Bromance
Filling the series with their humorous bromance scenes, we not only cheer for their romantic relationship with the female protagonists, but also for their friendship as Kang Tae-mu and Cha Sung-hoon.
The Chaotic Best Friends
Business proposal series musings.
Encapsulating the whole series into words, Business Proposal suffices as comforting hugs for it brings us jam-packed rom-com bliss.
Likewise, we commend the entire team’s efforts and wish them luck in securing an award for their outstanding performance in the series.
Finally, Business Proposal is a delightful drama that minimizes weighty issues and major conflicts in favor of a comfortable plot and endearing characters. Plus, there are two lead couples worth rooting for.

Business Proposal Korean Drama Review
Published by
Business Proposal tells the story of an office worker (Kim Se Jeong) who pretends to be her friend to go on a blind date which turns out to be the CEO (Ahn Hyo Seop) of her company.
Kim Se Jeong plays Shin Ha Ri. Her close friend asks her to go on a blind date for her, which she agrees to, but the date turns out to be the CEO of the company she works at which causes a host of problems for her.
Ahn Hyo Seop is Kang Tae Moo. He is the CEO of Ha Ri’s company who is constantly working. He reluctantly goes on a blind date to please his grandfather and finds himself drawn to Ha Ri.
Business Proposal is an all-around fun romantic comedy. We get romance, humor, heart, and just a side of drama. It contains a fair amount of rom-com tropes, but it delivers them in a refreshing way and nails the overall execution.
If you like your dramas lower on the angst, this drama is a great fit. We get those moments of misunderstandings, character difficulties, and relationship issues, but for the most part, things get worked through in a decent amount of time without over-the-top dramatics.
Our main romance between Ha Ri and Tae Moo was very enjoyable. It may look like a typical rich guy/poor girl situation, but in many ways the relationship felt very normal. Yes, we get some cliche moments, but many times the story would present some of these classic set-ups in unique ways that actually felt natural. Like if were to happen in real life.
So we get to see the wealthy and very kind Tae Moo fall for the hard-working and spirited Ha Ri. It’s a fun progression as they start off with Tae Moo not knowing Ha Ri’s real identity. We go through several stages as he learns more, and it was very nice watching him fall for her.
There are also quite a few swoony moments to enjoy throughout this romance. I have to say, I always thoroughly enjoyed this couple. They were interesting individually, but I loved them together. Their romance was very satisfying.
Our secondary romance between Da Goo and Yeong Seo was also nice. They have a very different dynamic than the main couple, and had quite a few challenges to go through, but I quite enjoyed seeing this relationship progress.
Business Proposal also features both a great bromance as well as a fantastic girlmance. Tae Moo and Da Goo had been friends since they were young, and I liked their interactions. Ha Ri and Yeong Seo were also long-time friends. Their relationship was a lot of fun, I thoroughly enjoyed their fun and supportive friendship.
There are some things you kind of have to just roll with in this drama with the main one being people’s inability to recognize Ha Ri when she wasn’t dressed up as her fake persona.
Of course, it’s completely obvious who she is, but people just don’t see it. You kind of have to think of it like no one being able to recognize Clark Kent as Superman just because he took off his glasses. Just go with it, hehe.
The drama is only 12 episodes which for the most part was a good thing. But I do think it could have even been longer which would have allowed the drama to flesh out a few of the storylines a bit more. Several story points are kind of glossed over, and the ending felt a bit rushed. But overall, the shorter episode count kept things tight which is always a plus.
Business Proposal is entertaining from start to finish. The drama flew by with the 12 episodes delivering excellent pacing. The characters were engaging, the story entertaining, and the romance very satisfying. A fun drama all around.

Okay, it’s now on my “to watch” list.
Yay! I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. It’s pretty standard by most metrics, but it’s a wonderful example of how to execute a romantic comedy 🙂
Glad you enjoyed this one, Kay.. It really was so slurpy and fun, at its best! 😍
Yes, it was such a fun drama! While I don’t mind tropes and cliches in general, I still love seeing a drama execute them in a way that feels fresh and different. Very slurpy indeed 😅
I agree with your take that “this is how to execute a romantic comedy”! Sometimes it feels like kdramas want to do too much with something so basic/simple. This is on my re-watch list whenever I feel like something fun and enjoyable to pass the time. Loved the chemistry among all leads – the couples, the friends, even with the nemesis cousin who was an amazing comedic talent with her ko-nglish LOL!
Exactly! Sometimes you just need to stick to the basics and concentrate on making that good. And that can make simple and cliche actually feel refreshing sometimes 🙂 And yes, all of the leads were great here (and the cousin! lol), and I really enjoyed everyone. A very fun drama 🙂
Great review Kay. I agree about the thing about not recognizing Ha Ri when it was so obvious but you are right it is like ‘Clark Kent’ situation – lol. It would have been better if it was 16 episodes too. 12 is too short when the drama is good like this but it was great fun. 🙂
Haha, yeah, definitely one of those things you just have to role with in a drama 😅 You know a drama is good when you actually feel like it should have been longer. That’s honestly a feat! 🙂
A very good show, well worth watching. While the love story (rich guy, poor girl and disapproving family) has been told many times in different Kdrama scenarios it is the two back story romances that allow this show to stand out from the not so good Kdaramas. The secondary romance between Da Goo and Yeong Seo was given enough screen time to fully develop that romance. Even the third romance, with just short screen time, was interesting. That was the romance between the manager of Food Development Team 1 and the deputy manager. Kim Hyun-sook and Lim Ki-hong. I was okay with 12 episodes which helped the show from lagging. I just read on the internet that there will be a Business Proposal 2. If they say that on the internet we know it’s got to be true. A shout out to veteran Korean actor Lee Deok-hwa as Chairman Kang Da-goo.
Rating 8/10
Yes, this is such a fun series. Plenty of cliches, but it executes the genre beautifully which makes it appealing. And I agree, the multiple romances really added a lot to the show.
I also loved Lee Deok Hwa here! He’s always great. We see him play villains more, which he excels at, but I love him being more fun and comedic.
And though I wouldn’t have minded it being longer, I agree, the 12 eps really helps keep the pacing and good and avoid in lagging in the story 🙂

Business Proposal – K-Drama Episode 2 Recap & Review
A fake-dating contract.
Episode 2 of Business Proposal begins with Ha-ri getting into Tae-moo’s car as she tries to avoid Min-woo. She again refuses his proposal, but he insists that he’ll marry her anyway.
She insults him by saying she could never marry someone who looks like an archaeopteryx. This offends him more than anything else she’s said to him so far.
At work the next day, Ha-ri notices her co-worker Hye-ji getting a call from Min-woo. When Hye-ji goes out to meet him, Ha-ri follows. She spies on them and sees Min-woo give her co-worker a gift.
On her way back to her office, Ha-ri runs into Tae-moo. She immediately turns around and runs, but she trips and falls. This causes her shoe to fly off her foot and hit Tae-moo in the face.
She runs off without her shoe, and he chases after her. When he catches her, he takes notice of her name badge, but doesn’t see her face. He gives her shoe back and commends her on the work she’s been doing.
In her office, she finds out from Hye-ji that Min-woo was simply returning a gift she had given him. He said he was uncomfortable with the gesture.
Later that night, Young-seo meets with Tae-moo to clear up whom she actually is. First, she bumps into Sung-hoon and gives him her card.
Young-seo tells Tae-moo that she hired someone to impersonate her, but Tae-moo suspects that the impersonator was a friend of hers.
He has a peculiar reaction to her story. He’s more angry at the fake Young-seo than the real one, and he wants to see the woman from his blind date before he calls off the marriage proposal. Young-seo agrees to set up a meeting.
So, Young-seo dresses up Ha-ri in her clothes and wig right before telling her Tae-moo would be showing up. She insists that all he wants is an apology.
Tae-moo arrives and picks up a coupon from Ha-ri’s family’s shop that she dropped on the ground. She admits to him that her family owns a chicken restaurant, but she lies to him about her name.
“Shin Geum-hui.” She says the first name that pops into her head. And it turns out to be the name of a character in a TV drama who works in a chicken shop and falls in love with a rich man–just a little too on the nose.
Tae-moo is angry at her deception and the way she insulted his appearance. She says she’ll do him a favour to make up for everything. In response, he puts his number in her phone and insists she pick up anytime he calls.
Tae-moo informs his grandfather that he and “Young-seo” broke up. As a result, he must go on a long string of dates with other eligible women. But all of them bore him.
When Da-goo says that the dates won’t stop until his grandson chooses a wife, Tae-moo blurts out that he and Young-seo got back together.
He calls Ha-ri to propose that they pretend to date. He offers her 1.6 million won for each time she meets his grandfather while impersonating Young-seo. She doesn’t immediately accept, but she’s tempted, as she has a lot of debt.
Min-woo later calls her to ask why she hasn’t stopped by lately. She promises she’ll be by to see him soon.
That night, Ha-ri gets a call from Tae-moo, who is outside her house. She makes herself up to go down and meet him. He gives her a fake-dating contract he’s drafted and a profile of himself, which he tells her to memorize.
She thinks his idea is crazy and runs out of his car. He goes after her. Just then, she catches sight of Min-woo walking up to the shop. Ducking from his sight, she knocks over Tae-moo and collapses on top of him.
The Episode Review
Similarly to episode 1, this instalment slowly draws out the narrative. The flashback to Ha-ri’s and Young-seo’s drunken night is just one example of an entirely unnecessary scene to the plot. The episodes could stand to cut such distractions in favour of introducing completely new subplots.
Currently, the chemistry between Ha-ri and Tae-moo presents as disdain on both ends, which makes for some amusing moments (and should lead to some fun romantic tension). If anything is going to keep me from rooting for the couple, however, it’s going to be Tae-moo’s prideful and overbearing nature.
Just as zany and light-hearted as episode 1, there’s also some spot-on comedic timing in this episode, particularly from Kim Min-kyu, whose character arrests the screen despite his limited appearances.
I’m intrigued to see how Tae-moo and Ha-ri handle a dating contract that seems none too bright. How does Tae-moo plan on keeping “Young-seo/Geum-hui/Ha-ri’s” identity a secret if they ever end up meeting with the real Young-seo’s father, Chairman Jin? Hopefully, we’ll see how they deal with such a situation in future episodes.
I guess Tae-moo does not hear the word “no” often, because he panicked at the thought of having to endure an arranged marriage, when he preferred the company of Ha-ri. Tae-moo did not appear to run this contract through any attorneys, and the sole witness to Ha-ri’s signing the contract under extreme duress was Sung-hoon.

“a business proposal” synopsis by episode (eps. 1-12, no spoilers) with in-depth analysis of the drama’s cinematography.
How I wrote these episode summaries with no spoilers
Ep. 1 recap:
At the hotel lobby, a random woman accuses Ha-ri (aka “Young-seo”) of cheating with her boyfriend; Ha-ri uses it to further turn off Tae-moo, claiming that she sometimes sees three or four men at the same time. She runs away from the hotel, with the random woman chasing her.
Tae-moo shocks his grandfather Chairman Kang Da-goo and his secretary Sung-hoon by saying that he will marry Young-seo.
While celebrating at a “noraebang” with Ha-ri, Young-seo finds out from her father that Tae-moo wants to marry her.
Rushing to work the next day, Ha-ri gets into an elevator with Tae-moo, Sung-hoon, and Chairman Kang Da-goo. As she hastily gets out of the elevator, she drops her employee ID, which Tae-moo picks up.
At a convenience store, Young-seo meets Sung-hoon and thinks that she has found the love of her life.
After Young-seo puts her on a guilt trip, Ha-ri agrees to meet Tae-moo again. At a cafe/restaurant, Ha-ri (aka “Young-seo”) walks out of Tae-moo, saying that she doesn’t want an arranged marriage, especially for business purposes.
On the street, Ha-ri sees her friend and crush, chef Min-woo. Not wanting Min-woo to see the way she’s dressed, she runs away but ends up inside Tae-moo’s car.
Ep. 2 recap:
Tae-moo realizes that Young-seo and the woman who impersonated her are actually friends. Later on, as he meets Ha-ri, he finds out that her family owns a chicken restaurant. Ha-ri confesses that she agreed to go to the blind date in exchange for 800,000 won. She apologizes to Tae-moo and promises to help him out in any favor. When Tae-moo asks for her name, she says that she’s “Shin Geum-hui” (the name of the female lead in a current K-drama).
After Tae-moo says that he doesn’t want to marry Young-seo anymore, Chairman Kang Da-goo requires him to go on blind dates again. He meets several women in one day, including someone in Japan.
Fed up with going on blind dates, Tae-moo tells his grandfather Chairman Kang Da-goo that he wants to marry a woman he had recently reconciled with. Later on, at a cafe station in an indoor children’s amusement park, he offers Ha-ri (“Shin Geum-hui”) 1.6 million won [more or less 1,000 US dollars] everytime she meets with his grandfather.
Tae-moo goes to Ha-ri (Shin Geum-hui)’s house-cum-chicken restaurant and presents her with a written contract for their dates. Ha-ri gets out of Tae-moo’s car and runs back to the house. After seeing her brother on his way home, she pushes Tae-moo away. Tae-moo falls to the ground, but he also pulls Ha-ri down with him.
Ep. 3 recap:
Young-seo rents an apartment unit that’s adjacent to Sung-hoon’s unit. Later, when she asks Sung-hoon if they could be friends since they’re neighbors, he rejects her because of the trouble she created on her supposed blind date with Tae-moo.
Ha-ri is brokenhearted to find out that Min-woo has reconciled with his girlfriend, Yoo-ra.
Chairman Kang Da-goo forces Tae-moo to go with Ha-ri to the concert (using the tickets that Min-woo gave to her). During the concert, as Ha-ri remembers her happy moments with Min-woo for the past seven years, Tae-moo notices that she’s crying.
While at a “tteokbokki” stand in a park with Tae-moo, Ha-ri gets hit on the eye with a baseball.
Ep. 4 recap:
Chairman Kang Da-goo falls into a large basin filled with cabbages and cold water after struggling with Ha-ri over the door knob of the restroom.
Tae-moo takes Shin Geum-hui (Ha-ri) to a luxury boutique and buys for her an expensive, one of a kind dress. As they’re leaving, Jo Yoo-jung (Young-seo’s cousin) sees them. Later, they go to a fancy Italian restaurant owned by Chairman Kang Da-goo. Tae-moo learns that Shin Geum-hui (Ha-ri) knows a lot about food.
Tae-moo finally finds out that Shin Geum-hui (his fake girlfriend) and Shin Ha-ri (a senior food researcher in his company) are one and the same person.
Ep. 5 recap:
Tae-moo rushes to the playground where he finds Ha-ri quite drunk. Thinking that seeing Tae-moo in front of her is a dream, Ha-ri confesses that she and Shin Geum-hui are one and the same person.
The next day, Tae-moo releases Ha-ri from their contract, saying that they don’t have to meet each other again. He then immediately goes to the US on a business trip and to erase Ha-ri from his memories.
To her surprise, Ha-ri gets a phone call from Chairman Kang Da-goo, who asks her if they could meet for dinner. She calls up Tae-moo, but he refuses to take her call.
Young-seo finds the spy camera hidden in the table lamp. On her way to the police station, her male neighbor accosts her and snatches the table lamp and spy camera from her.
Tae-moo finds out from Sung-hoon what happened to Young-seo. Ha-ri arrives for her dinner date with Chairman Kang Da-goo, but Tae-moo immediately tells her that her friend Young-seo is in trouble. Ha-ri is shocked when she hears Tae-moo call her “Shin Ha-ri” instead of “Shin Geum-hui.”
Ep. 6 recap:
Tae-moo’s plan to propose to Ha-ri that they should start dating with marriage in view fails. Later on, he tears up Ha-ri’s resignation letter, and Ha-ri becomes happy that she gets to keep her job despite everything that has happened.
Tae-moo’s planned movie date with Ha-ri goes awry when Ha-ri’s teammates see Ha-ri at the theater lobby and join her in watching the movie. Tae-moo sneaks away from the theater.
Having found out what Ha-ri likes from her social media postings, Tae-moo schedules a date with her in Sokcho. But on the way back to Seoul, they get caught in the heavy rain. Tae-moo becomes agitated, remembering his parents’ deaths; he orders Ha-ri to get off his car.
Young-seo gets drunk; on the street, she kisses Sung-hoon.
At the hotel, Ha-ri is shocked when Tae-moo introduces himself to Yoo-ra and their friends as her boyfriend.
Ep. 7 recap:
Young-seo confesses to Ha-ri that she slept with Sung-hoon but is flustered and embarrassed because she can’t remember anything about that night. Through the group chat, she finds out that their friends know Tae-moo as Ha-ri’s boyfriend.
After Sung-hoon confesses to Young-seo that he fell in love with her the day they met at the convenience store, they sleep together again.
A week passes, and Ha-ri thinks about turning down Tae-moo because of their difference in status. At the additional photo shoot with Min-woo, she takes over from her officemate who took one calming pill too many.
While they’re hiding from Chairman Kang Da-goo, Ha-ri tells Tae-moo that a romantic relationship between them won’t succeed. But when Tae-moo answers that he won’t give her up, she kisses him.
Ep. 8 recap:
Tae-moo puts Ha-ri’s parents in a VIP room in the hospital. But Ha-ri introduces him to her parents as Mr. Gye-bin, her immediate boss at the Food Research Production Team 1.
Min-woo finds the dating contract between Tae-moo and Ha-ri in Ha-ri’s room. Later, on the street, when he sees and hears Tae-moo asking Ha-ri for a kiss as payback, he punches Tae-moo.
Tae-moo finds out about Sung-hoon’s relationship with Young-seo.
Chairman Kang Da-goo orders Tae-moo to go on a blind date with Director Jo Yu-jeong (Young-seo’s cousin and immediate boss at Marine Group).
At the sports competition among the food researchers, Ha-ri plays hard to win the MVP award because a dinner date with Tae-moo is the special prize. Afterwards, she calls up Tae-moo and asks him to get out immediately of his blind date. They meet on a bridge and kiss.
Ep. 9 recap:
Chairman Kang Da-goo finds out that it was Sung-hoon, instead of Tae-moo, who went to the blind date with Yu-jeong.
After another mishap in the bathroom with Ha-ri, Chairman Kang Da-goo orders her to write a letter of apology. He also tells Tae-moo that he hates seeing Ha-ri.
Young-seo finds out that the man Yu-jeong has been chasing is none other than Sung-hoon. When Yu-jeong creates a scene at the restaurant, she walks out despite Sung-hoon’s attempts to explain things to her. She fails to meet the nun who Sung-hoon calls “Mother.”
After the team dinner and drinking session, Tae-moo and Ha-ri plan to take a little walk to get sober. But Chairman Kang Da-goo sees and confronts them.
Ep. 10 recap:
After finding out more about Sung-hoon from the nun in the orphanage, Young-seo reconciles with Sung-hoon.
Tae-moo introduces himself to Ha-ri’s brother as Ha-ri’s boyfriend.
Chairman Kang Da-goo finds out from the nun that Tae-moo went to the orphanage with someone named Shin Ha-ri. Later, he meets Ha-ri and orders her not to meet Tae-moo ever again.
While rushing to where Chairman Kang Da-goo is meeting Ha-ri, Tae-moo gets into a car accident.
Episode 12, Finale (with spoilers)
Ep. 11 recap:
Tae-moo reveals to Ha-ri how his parents died in a car accident because of him.
Because the board of directors could possibly force Tae-moo to resign as company president, Chairman Kang Da-goo orders Ha-ri to either transfer to a provincial branch or resign.
Ha-ri’s brother tells his parents that the man they thought was Ha-ri’s superior, Gye-bin, is actually Kang Tae-moo, the president of GO Food.
At the restaurant, Young-seo’s father tells her and Sung-hoon that he doesn’t object to their relationship. On their way home, Sung-hoon proposes to her.
After meeting Chairman Kang Da-goo, Ha-ri walks around aimlessly until she finds herself in Namsan Tower. Tae-moo goes to her, and they spend the night together.

Lessons in photography from “A Business Proposal” with analysis of its visuals, cinematography, and editing
Part 1 It’s important to understand that these cues stand out because they add more than just composition to a shot. They add a subtext which most times reinforces the narrative ... but which may also, at times, contradict the script. In a way, they allow the director to communicate directly with us. So that even when the writers may be doing their best to confuse us, a good director will leave hints of the truth through carefully placed shots. Part 4 Though some of you may see these cues merely as aesthetic choices, doing so would be rendering a great disservice to the directors and the mastery they hold over their craft. Every art form focused on storytelling requires knowledge of colors, design, composition, and hierarchy -- among many others, to communicate things appropriately.
A dutch angle or dutch tilt is a great way to signal to your viewer that something in your scene is wrong. That said, many filmmakers have used the dutch angle too much, or in such a thoughtless manner that they left cinematic effectiveness on the table. Dutch angles were originally created during the film era of German Expressionism, and they are a perfect cinematic tool for jarring a viewer, and signalling trouble, danger, or general unrest within a situation.
Let’s start with a low angle shot definition, which is basically just any shot that is captured below eye line level. With strategic camera placement and situational context, this technique has been used to emphasize the heroism of a character(s) or — on the opposite end of the spectrum — their vulnerability.
