Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the intellectual capabilities exhibited by machines, contrasting with the innate intelligence observed in living beings, such as animals and humans.

The inception of artificial intelligence research as an academic field can be traced back to its establishment in 1956. It was during the renowned Dartmouth conference of the same year that artificial intelligence acquired its distinctive name, definitive purpose, initial accomplishments, and notable pioneers, thereby earning its reputation as the birthplace of AI. The esteemed figures of Marvin Minsky and John McCarthy are widely recognized as the founding fathers of this discipline.

Early pioneers such as John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, and Allen Newell played instrumental roles in shaping the foundations of AI research. In the following years after its original inception, AI witnessed both periods of optimism and periods of skepticism, as researchers explored different approaches and techniques. Notable breakthroughs include the development of expert systems in the 1970s, which aimed to replicate human knowledge and reasoning, and the emergence of machine learning algorithms in the 1980s and 1990s. Artificial Intelligence Essay

Who would have imagined that we would live in a world with self-driven cars, robots that could clean our homes, or virtual assistants that could respond to any question we had without having to type it into our mobile devices? Yet, here we are, with all of these amenities that are enhancing and simplifying our lives. Here are some sample essays on artificial intelligence.

100 Words Essay On Artificial Intelligence

200 words essay on artificial intelligence, 500 words essay on artificial intelligence, 4 types of artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence Essay

Artificial intelligence is referred to as machine intelligence. It basically refers to the capability of machines to emulate human intelligence. Machines are now capable of learning, planning, thinking, and problem-solving, thanks to artificial intelligence. The most notable aspect of artificial intelligence is how robots simulate human intellect. It is probably the fastest-growing development in the world of technology and innovation. AI is a technology that is transforming every walk of life. Today, artificial intelligence is being used more and more in practically every industry. While technology has improved and eased our lives, it has also put many people's employment at risk.

Artificial intelligence was developed in 1950. John McCarthy is considered as the “Father of artificial intelligence” as he first coined the term. The development of gadgets that can mimic human intelligence, including abilities such as voice recognition, decision-making, and language translation, is known as artificial intelligence. Making computers understand like humans, think like humans, and act like humans is done by instilling data as instructions and inputs.

Taking Over Industry | The need for human help is dwindling as AI has taken over many parts of the industry, which may result in concerns with unemployment in many occupations. However, the degree of control the human species chooses to give technology will always be up to them. As is correctly said, technology works best when it unites people.

AI In Everyday Life | Advancement in technology has a direct influence on our lives, businesses and social life. Whether or not we consciously realise it, AI has begun to penetrate the various aspects of our everyday lives. If we observe, many aspects of our everyday lives now involve the use of artificial intelligence, for instance, face ID and image recognition features in mobile phones, emails, various apps, digital voice assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, Google search, route mapping, traffic updates, weather updates, Netflix and Amazon for entertainment, etc.

The field of computer science and engineering has attempted to simulate the features of human intelligence for a very long time with the help of machines, which is called artificial intelligence. The acronym for it is AI. The things that machines are designed to do through the implementation of AI are to learn, understand, reason, adapt, etc.

British mathematician and computer pioneer, Alan Turing, initiated developments in the then new field of artificial intelligence. In 1950, Turing predicted that a machine will one day be able to completely replicate human intellect.

Artificial Intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines that would make human life easier. It is concerned with getting computers to do tasks that would normally require human intelligence. AI started showing promising solutions for industry and businesses as well as our daily lives. The developments in artificial intelligence were initially slow and eventually gained pace. But recently, due to advancement of the technological era, the popularity of artificial intelligence got a boost with the evolutionary discoveries being made in the field.

Artificial Intelligence has been categorised into four categories by Arend Hintze:-

The first types of AI are those machines which can react to certain situations but don’t have any sort of memory and hence cannot learn or use past experience. For example – computer chess games.

The second types of AI are those machines which are capable of using past memory to form future ones. An excellent example of this second type of AI is self-driven cars.

The third type of AI at present only exists in theory, and as per the imagination, it will be able to have human emotions like beliefs, desires, opinions, intentions, etc.

The fourth form of AI if ever comes to exist would be the type of AI machine that will be able to have a sense of self-awareness, emotions and consciousness. If this type of AI ever comes to exist, then it would be a real revolution.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Artificial Intelligence

Just like two sides to a coin, artificial intelligence is subject to be beneficial and have harmful impacts too.

Saves Manual Effort | One of the emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, is proven to be beneficial. It lessens the burden of work that is to be done manually and so a person may save a lot of time with the help of technology. AI can work endlessly without getting tired, unlike humans, and hence bring more work productivity.

Reduces Human Interaction | The negative effects of artificial intelligence are numerous. Any new technology is only intended to make our work simpler; it does not imply that we should stop working. AI requires less human interaction, making students more engaged with the online world than the world in front of them.

Technology is always evolving. It is demonstrating to be a benefit to humanity. Every type of technology has both advantages and disadvantages, and artificial intelligence is no exception. It is important in several fields of business and study, but if misused, it might become a danger to humanity.

Essay on artificial intelligence for class 7.

Writing essays helps kids and students to enhance their language skills and gives them an opportunity to express their ideas in a non-verbal way. When kids practice essay writing tasks, they learn invaluable skills of framing information on a particular topic into meaningful, coherent paragraphs. This skill helps them in the long run, in various ways beyond their academics. We at Vedantu, bring you a collection of essays that will guide you in practicing correct essay writing techniques and also will provide you with relevant information on important essay topics. Here’s an easy essay on Artificial Intelligence for your perusal.

Artificial Intelligence

AI is a field of study to make the smartest use of computers. It can be defined as the ability of the computer to think and learn. In the modern era, the recent growth in technology has totally changed the face of science and engineering. This change has helped people in reshaping their relationships with the surrounding people and accepting the new way of living.

Artificial Intelligence is the ultimate future of the world. There are four basic categories of AI which are- reactive machines, limited memory, the theory of mind, and self-awareness. The machines which are purely on the reaction basis, neither use past experience nor form memories to determine their future actions. The best example of it is- the game of chess, Deep blue has even beaten up the world champion Garry Kasparov. Reactive machines are the machines which are capable of purely reaction; it is also having the power to memorize from past experiences.

The researchers are engaged in evolving the next two categories. Let’s broadly examine those. Theory of mind level AI will be able to better understand the entities it is interacting with by discerning their needs, emotions, and other thinking powers. And the last Self-awareness AI, which, self explanatorily, is an AI that has evolved to be so akin to the human brain that it has developed self-awareness.

AI is the solution to minimize human errors. Moreover, it never gets tired or wears out easily. We use a new device named ‘Alexa’, it’s fun learning and enjoying while the speedy mobile works are done by ‘Siri’. The smart cars are developed with a smart call system, to track the exact location and nearby positions. The AI also has some medicinal applications, it's said that time and tide waits for none, the doctor uses the artificial machine intelligence in patient’s treatment. AI is an alternative in many human risk situations; great research scientists use AI in calculating the flood intensity where human safety is vulnerable.

There are countless pros and cons of any system, even a coin has two sides; it's up to the user the way he makes use of it. But in actuality, AI improves our thinking ability and to reach the horizon, even it states new horizons for the growing individual and expands its reach beyond the ocean and space. Time evolves from using a hand-fan to using smartphones to switching on the fan from the bed itself. The people must accept the new technologies and innovate for better lives and the divination of the country.

AI is unable to exhibit human emotions so there is no reason to expect the AI to be benevolent. Furthermore, it is neither pocket-friendly, it requires a huge cost as it is a complex machine, not only its installation cost but also the maintenance and repair cost is huge. The major drawback is its not learning with the growing experience, it performs the same task in the same way as the algorithm installed inside it. In a way, creativity is somewhere vanishing with its use.

Artificial Intelligence Types

There are two types of Artificial Intelligence:

The Narrow AI also known as  Weak AI. This is AI that operates within a limited context and simulates human intelligence. Narrow AI focuses on performing a single task extremely well, operating under constraints and limitations than the most basic human intelligence. Google search, Alexa or Siri, image recognition softwares, self-driving cars etc. are all examples of narrow AI.

Artificial General Intelligence  or AGI is also referred to as Strong AI is the type of AI we see in the movies. Remember the robots from the TV show Westworld or Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation? AGI, like humans, can apply their general intelligence to solve any problem.

There are many pros and cons to any system. In the end, it is about how one decides to use it.

AI doesn’t come cheap though. It involves a huge one-time cost for installation and then a constant spend on the maintenance and repair cost. So far, AI hasn’t been able to show or understand human emotions so there is no reason to expect the AI to be either benevolent or badly behaved. The major drawback of AI is that it  performs the same task in the same way each time as per the algorithm installed inside it. Also, the overuse and overdependence on AI is causing creativity to vanish slowly and steadily.

Conclusion:

In the end though, AI can improve our thinking ability and help us reach new horizons, explore our growth potential and expand our reach beyond the ocean and space. Human beings have evolved with time. They have gone from using a hand-held fan to using smartphones to switch the fan on from wherever in the house they are. So, new technologies and innovations improve lives and are important to the progress of the country.

FAQs on Artificial Intelligence Essay for Class 7 Students

1. What is the meaning of Artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is a wing of computer science that deals with machines learning human-like intelligence. Softwares is incorporated with the ability to recognize patterns, analyze the surroundings, by using predetermined search algorithms or rules, and work on decision making accordingly. In other words, with the help of artificial intelligence, machines with the power of thinking and working like humans are being developed. For example, ’Alexa’ performs various searches based on speech recognition, and Siri is another example of an AI machine that works on speech recognition. Some other AI machines have software for problem-solving, planning, and learning patterns as well.

2. What are the 4 types of AI?

AI machines can be classified into 4 types, namely,

Reactive Machines: These are the simplest types of machines working on AI, which do not have the ability to form any memories or to use past experiences for decision making. Hence these AI machines are termed reactive machines.

Limited Memory: These machines are incorporated with the ability to look in past memories. For example, self-driving cars are pre-programmed with the traffic light patterns, lane numbers, and the turns on the road. Based on this limited memory, the self-driving cars male decisions like when to make a turn to reach the pre-programmed destination.

Kids-learning • Class 7

Early iterations of the AI applications we interact with most today were built on traditional machine learning models. These models rely on learning algorithms that are developed and maintained by data scientists. In other words, traditional machine learning models need human intervention to process new information and perform any new task that falls outside their initial training.

For example, Apple made Siri a feature of its iOS in 2011. This early version of Siri was trained to understand a set of highly specific statements and requests. Human intervention was required to expand Siri’s knowledge base and functionality.

However, AI capabilities have been evolving steadily since the breakthrough development of  artificial neural networks  in 2012, which allow machines to engage in reinforcement learning and simulate how the human brain processes information.

Unlike basic machine learning models, deep learning models allow AI applications to learn how to perform new tasks that need human intelligence, engage in new behaviors and make decisions without human intervention. As a result, deep learning has enabled task automation, content generation, predictive maintenance and other capabilities across  industries .

Due to deep learning and other advancements, the field of AI remains in a constant and fast-paced state of flux. Our collective understanding of realized AI and theoretical AI continues to shift, meaning AI categories and AI terminology may differ (and overlap) from one source to the next. However, the types of AI can be largely understood by examining two encompassing categories: AI capabilities and AI functionalities.

1. Artificial Narrow AI

Artificial Narrow Intelligence, also known as Weak AI (what we refer to as Narrow AI), is the only type of AI that exists today. Any other form of AI is theoretical. It can be trained to perform a single or narrow task, often far faster and better than a human mind can.

However, it can’t perform outside of its defined task. Instead, it targets a single subset of cognitive abilities and advances in that spectrum. Siri, Amazon’s Alexa and IBM Watson are examples of Narrow AI. Even OpenAI’s ChatGPT is considered a form of Narrow AI because it’s limited to the single task of text-based chat.

2. General AI

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), also known as  Strong AI , is today nothing more than a theoretical concept. AGI can use previous learnings and skills to accomplish new tasks in a different context without the need for human beings to train the underlying models. This ability allows AGI to learn and perform any intellectual task that a human being can.

3. Super AI

Super AI is commonly referred to as artificial superintelligence and, like AGI, is strictly theoretical. If ever realized, Super AI would think, reason, learn, make judgements and possess cognitive abilities that surpass those of human beings.

The applications possessing Super AI capabilities will have evolved beyond the point of understanding human sentiments and experiences to feel emotions, have needs and possess beliefs and desires of their own.

Underneath Narrow AI, one of the three types based on capabilities, there are two functional AI categories:

1. Reactive Machine AI

Reactive machines are AI systems with no memory and are designed to perform a very specific task. Since they can’t recollect previous outcomes or decisions, they only work with presently available data. Reactive AI stems from statistical math and can analyze vast amounts of data to produce a seemingly intelligent output.

Examples of Reactive Machine AI

  • IBM Deep Blue: IBM’s chess-playing supercomputer AI beat chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov in the late 1990s by analyzing the pieces on the board and predicting the probable outcomes of each move.
  • The Netflix Recommendation Engine: Netflix’s viewing recommendations are powered by models that process data sets collected from viewing history to provide customers with content they’re most likely to enjoy.

2. Limited Memory AI

Unlike Reactive Machine AI, this form of AI can recall past events and outcomes and monitor specific objects or situations over time. Limited Memory AI can use past- and present-moment data to decide on a course of action most likely to help achieve a desired outcome.

However, while Limited Memory AI can use past data for a specific amount of time, it can’t retain that data in a library of past experiences to use over a long-term period. As it’s trained on more data over time, Limited Memory AI can improve in performance.

Examples of Limited Memory AI

  • Generative AI: Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Bard and DeepAI rely on limited memory AI capabilities to predict the next word, phrase or visual element within the content it’s generating.
  • Virtual assistants and chatbots: Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, Cortana and IBM Watson Assistant combine natural language processing (NLP) and Limited Memory AI to understand questions and requests, take appropriate actions and compose responses.
  • Self-driving cars: Autonomous vehicles use Limited Memory AI to understand the world around them in real-time and make informed decisions on when to apply speed, brake, make a turn, etc.

3. Theory of Mind AI

Theory of Mind AI is a functional class of AI that falls underneath the General AI. Though an unrealized form of AI today, AI with Theory of Mind functionality would understand the thoughts and emotions of other entities. This understanding can affect how the AI interacts with those around them. In theory, this would allow the AI to simulate human-like relationships.

Because Theory of Mind AI could infer human motives and reasoning, it would personalize its interactions with individuals based on their unique emotional needs and intentions. Theory of Mind AI would also be able to understand and contextualize artwork and essays, which today’s generative AI tools are unable to do.

Emotion AI is a theory of mind AI currently in development. AI researchers hope it will have the ability to analyze voices, images and other kinds of data to recognize, simulate, monitor and respond appropriately to humans on an emotional level. To date, Emotion AI is unable to understand and respond to human feelings.

4. Self-Aware AI

Self-Aware AI is a kind of functional AI class for applications that would possess super AI capabilities. Like theory of mind AI, Self-Aware AI is strictly theoretical. If ever achieved, it would have the ability to understand its own internal conditions and traits along with human emotions and thoughts. It would also have its own set of emotions, needs and beliefs.

Emotion AI is a Theory of Mind AI currently in development. Researchers hope it will have the ability to analyze voices, images and other kinds of data to recognize, simulate, monitor and respond appropriately to humans on an emotional level. To date, Emotion AI is unable to understand and respond to human feelings.

Computer vision

Narrow AI applications with  computer vision  can be trained to interpret and analyze the visual world. This allows intelligent machines to identify and classify objects within images and video footage.

Applications of computer vision include:

  • Image recognition and classification
  • Object detection
  • Object tracking
  • Facial recognition
  • Content-based image retrieval

Computer vision is critical for use cases that involve AI machines interacting and traversing the physical world around them. Examples include self-driving cars and machines navigating warehouses and other environments.

Robots in industrial settings can use Narrow AI to perform routine, repetitive tasks that involve materials handling, assembly and quality inspections. In healthcare, robots equipped with Narrow AI can assist surgeons in monitoring vitals and detecting potential issues during procedures.

Agricultural machines can engage in autonomous pruning, moving, thinning, seeding and spraying. And smart home devices such as the iRobot Roomba can navigate a home’s interior using computer vision and use data stored in memory to understand its progress.

Expert systems

Expert systems equipped with Narrow AI capabilities can be trained on a corpus to emulate the human decision-making process and apply expertise to solve complex problems. These systems can evaluate vast amounts of data to uncover trends and patterns to make decisions. They can also help businesses predict future events and understand why past events occurred.

IBM has pioneered AI from the very beginning, contributing breakthrough after breakthrough to the field. IBM most recently released a big upgrade to its cloud-based, generative AI platform known as watsonx.  IBM watsonx.ai  brings together new generative AI capabilities, powered by foundation models and traditional machine learning into a powerful studio spanning the entire AI lifecycle. With watsonx.ai, data scientists can build, train and deploy machine learning models in a single collaborative studio environment.

Artificial Intelligence Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

History of artificial intelligence, current ai uses, future of ai, artificial intelligence opinion piece, works cited.

A defining characteristic of the last century has been the numerous significant technological advancements made. Most of these advances were facilitated by the invention of the computer, making computer science a critical discipline in modern times. One fascinating and promising branch of computer science is Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This is an interdisciplinary branch of the science that borrows from a wide range of fields including cognitive psychology, engineering, mathematics, linguistics, and philosophy. The field aims at exploring and developing ways in which computer systems can be made to act in a manner that human beings recognize as “intelligent”.

The term “artificial intelligence” was coined in 1956 following concerted interest by scientists from various backgrounds on symbolic processing and computer simulation of human behavior (Palmer 2). While AI as a discipline began in the mid-1950s, its foundations were laid earlier on by a number of prominent British scientists. The 19th century British mathematician Charles Babbage formulated the first computing engine, which served as the precursor of the modern digital computer.

The 19th century Mathematician-logician George Boole invented Boolean algebra, which was used in the operation of digital computer. Last and most important was the British logician-mathematician, Alan Turin, who proposed computer programs based upon logical operators. The proposed machines were capable of interacting and manipulating symbols that included natural language. Palmer reveals that from Turin’s idea or a universal programmable computer, the ideal of AI arose (2).

The initial goals of AI researchers were very ambitious. In the early years of the field, AI scientists sort to fully duplicate the human capacities of thought and language on the digital computer (Palmer 2). Some of the researchers involved in AI projects went so far as to claim that a complete theory of intelligence would be achieved by the late 1960s.

As it turned out, the AI programs did not achieve the momentous results promised. The initial efforts led to the successful design of programs that could prove theorems in symbolic logic. However, the projects failed to succeed in automatic language translation leading to a loss of funding to expert systems, which did not attempt to explain human intelligence but had great practical applications.

There was a regeneration of interest in AI over the 1970s and 1980s as researchers in the US and Europe engaged in expansive studies exploring intuitions about intelligence (Geffner 45). During this period, computer scientists had reduced the ambitions of AI to theories of more modest scope. The quest for certainty and truth had been abandoned for “micro-truths” that can be obtained though common sense introspection.

As opposed to the past where AI research was concentrated on understanding the nature of intelligence, greater emphasis was given to practical application (Palmer 2). The 21st century has witnessed great advances in AI with systems being developed for practical applications.

The past two decades have witnessed an increase in the number of practical AI uses. One area where AI is used with increasing frequency is speech recognition. Computer systems are programmed to understand human natural language and respond to it. Speech recognition is difficult to achieve since human speech is impeded by many factors including accents, slang words, and background noise. As such, computer systems have to have some level of intelligence in order to correctly recognize human voice.

Speech recognition programs have to be trained to understand the particular speech pattern of a user (Geffner 46). After the training, the program can be used for a wide array of practical uses. It can be used to give voice commands to smart vehicles. Smart phones also utilize speech recognition to write text messages or initialize phone calls.

AI has also been used in the creation of intelligent robots that perform a number of tasks. Typical robots, such as those ones used in vehicle assembly are not intelligent in that they are programmed to perform specific tasks in a repetitive manner. AI technology used to make a robot includes artificial neural network, knowledge based system and all possible decision making systems (Bongard 75).

As a result of this, the intelligent robots can adjust to the natural environment and learn from mistakes. These robots have been used for the exploration of unknown environment including distant planets. Using AI, the robot is able to utilize the input from its many different sensors to adapt to the conditions.

The medical field employs AI in medical diagnosis. By use of artificial neural networks, medical professionals are aided in their decision making process. In addition to this, AI helps in the interpretation of medical images and can accurately detect conditions such as tumors (Bongard 80). A knowledge based system that has captured and embedded explicitly human knowledge can be used to suggest treatment options for patients. AI reduces the risk of wrong prescriptions by a physician.

Artificial intelligence is employed in the development of accounting systems. Specifically, AI has been exploited in auditing, taxation, and decision making support. Moudud reveals that neural networks, genetic algorithms, and knowledge-based systems are being used to detect fraud and perform risk analysis (10). By going though vast amounts of data, AI systems are able to identify patterns and therefore highlight irregularities. AI systems have also been used for bankruptcy prediction. Moudud explains that intelligent techniques are used to develop models capable of predicting business failure cases (16).

Artificial intelligence is also used to access the safety of bridges. The structural integrity of bridges is important since their collapse might be disastrous. Shuster explains that by using neural network computing, engineers are able to compare the properties of cracks in beams with the stiffness and thereby compute a health index (40). By using AI, the objectivity of bridge health assessment is assured since the computer does not suffer from the bias that an inspector might have.

While AI has greatly advanced since it was first conceived in the 1950s, the field has not achieved the goal of creating machines that can solve problems independently like humans and learn and improve from each encounter (Bongard 74). However, researchers predict some significant breakthroughs in AI in the future.

Advances are being made to improve the speech recognition abilities of machines. With technological advances, intelligent machines are predicted to not only be able to recognize and communicate fluently in natural language but also detect emotions and respond to them (Bongard 76). Emotion detection and emulation will be a great advancement in AI since it closely mimics human behavior.

AI researchers are working on creating systems that not only analyze vast amounts of data and come up with “intelligent” solutions, but systems that can come up with ideas. Such systems would be able to mimic human intelligence through their perceptiveness (Geffner 45). In addition to this, there are projects aimed at creating machines that have some level of self-awareness in the same way that humans do. While these projects are still in their infancy, it is hoped that as huge technological advances are made, there will be sufficient processing power available to achieve such goals.

In terms of uses, there are many possible applications of AI in the future. Researchers are already working on intelligent power grids. These smart power grids will utilize neural networks to have electricity flowing in both directions (Geffner 50). The grid will be able to adjust electricity distribution dynamically in response to the changing demand in the various areas. The military is also exploring ways in which it can exploit AI in combat. Specifically, there are plans for introducing soldier robots that will be able to carry out fighting tasks currently undertaken by human beings. The AI fighting machines will be able to react to situations in the battlefield in the same way that humans do (Geffner 49). These machines will be able to discriminate between enemy combatants and innocent civilians. These machines will increase the efficiency of a country’s military force while reducing human casualty.

The field of AI has not advanced in the manner that its pioneers envisioned it would. Even so, Artificial Intelligence has exhibited growth and it has contributed in many of the technological advances made today. The future promises to bring even more engaging innovations in this field. Some AI researchers are hopeful that by 2050, systems that possess self awareness and are capable of producing independent thoughts will have been created. If this is achieved, Allan Turin’s vision of Artificial Intelligence will have been realized.

Artificial Intelligence is one of the fields where there exist differences in opinions about the overall benefits of the disciple to mankind. The negative views on AI stem from the supposed dangers that intelligent machines might present to man. Opponent of AI predict that as the field is advanced, self aware machines that can rise against man will be created. In the present, the opponents point out that AI is creating a condition where machines take over more jobs that could otherwise be performed by people. However, a careful look at the advances and applications of AI over the last few decades suggests that this field is making a positive contribution to human life.

Modern discoveries in remote regions including outer space have been greatly aided by AI. Using these systems, scientists have been able to discover unexplored places including the planet Mars. AI machines used for exploration are made such that they can endure hostile physical environments (Chatfield par 3). Their intelligence makes it possible for them to adapt to the real conditions in their environment and achieve the set scientific objectives.

Since there is no risk of harm to humans when using intelligent machines, scientists have been able to engage in the exploration of dangerous lands. Without AI, it would be impossible for exploration into distant or dangerous regions to be made since such activities would involve great risk to human life.

AI increases the efficiency with which work is performed. Whether intelligent machines are used independently or to assist humans, they result in added speed and accuracy of performing tasks (Moshe 5). For example, application of AI systems in the medical field can reduce unnecessary testing by predicting the impact that a medical test will have in the eventual decision making of the physician (Cismondi 345). The risk of error is also decreased since AI machines can have a knowledge base that will be utilized to highlight errors.

Intelligent machines can perform better in activities that require decision making since they are not prone to bias. Once the machine learns how to perform a task, it can be expect to keep performing consistently without error. The machine will always make the rational decision since its judgment is not clouded (Moshe 5). The lack of emotion also means that AI systems can be relied upon to think logically at all times. Objectivity is therefore ensured when AI systems are employed.

AI has contributed to the high rate of technological advances currently being enjoyed. AI machines have been used to make many computer models that have been used for various innovative purposes (Tseng 465). The high degree of accuracy and the speed with which this modeling has occurred has speeded up the making of technological and scientific discoveries. It can be expected that as more AI systems are implemented, these technological growth rate will increase thereby benefiting humankind even more.

The human civilization is enjoying many benefits because of AI. These advantages have led to increased interest in advancing the field. At the present, AI is considered to be in its infancy stage and it is expected that as the field advances, many more applications of these systems will be developed. These developments will be harnessed to benefit.

Press Pause on the Silicon Valley Hype Machine

artificial intelligence essay in english

By Julia Angwin

Ms. Angwin is a contributing Opinion writer and an investigative journalist.

It’s a little hard to believe that just over a year ago, a group of leading researchers asked for a six-month pause in the development of larger systems of artificial intelligence, fearing that the systems would become too powerful. “Should we risk loss of control of our civilization?” they asked.

There was no pause. But now, a year later, the question isn’t really whether A.I. is too smart and will take over the world. It’s whether A.I. is too stupid and unreliable to be useful. Consider this week’s announcement from OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, who promised he would unveil “new stuff” that “ feels like magic to me.” But it was just a rather routine update that makes ChatGPT cheaper and faster .

It feels like another sign that A.I. is not even close to living up to its hype. In my eyes, it’s looking less like an all-powerful being and more like a bad intern whose work is so unreliable that it’s often easier to do the task yourself. That realization has real implications for the way we, our employers and our government should deal with Silicon Valley’s latest dazzling new, new thing. Acknowledging A.I.’s flaws could help us invest our resources more efficiently and also allow us to turn our attention toward more realistic solutions.

Others voice similar concerns. “I find my feelings about A.I. are actually pretty similar to my feelings about blockchains: They do a poor job of much of what people try to do with them, they can’t do the things their creators claim they one day might, and many of the things they are well suited to do may not be altogether that beneficial,” wrote Molly White, a cryptocurrency researcher and critic , in her newsletter last month.

Let’s look at the research.

In the past 10 years, A.I. has conquered many tasks that were previously unimaginable, such as successfully identifying images, writing complete coherent sentences and transcribing audio. A.I. enabled a singer who had lost his voice to release a new song using A.I. trained with clips from his old songs.

But some of A.I.’s greatest accomplishments seem inflated. Some of you may remember that the A.I. model ChatGPT-4 aced the uniform bar exam a year ago. Turns out that it scored in the 48th percentile, not the 90th, as claimed by OpenAI , according to a re-examination by the M.I.T. researcher Eric Martínez . Or what about Google’s claim that it used A.I. to discover more than two million new chemical compounds ? A re-examination by experimental materials chemists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, found “ scant evidence for compounds that fulfill the trifecta of novelty, credibility and utility .”

Meanwhile, researchers in many fields have found that A.I. often struggles to answer even simple questions, whether about the law , medicine or voter information . Researchers have even found that A.I. does not always improve the quality of computer programming , the task it is supposed to excel at.

I don’t think we’re in cryptocurrency territory, where the hype turned out to be a cover story for a number of illegal schemes that landed a few big names in prison . But it’s also pretty clear that we’re a long way from Mr. Altman’s promise that A.I. will become “ the most powerful technology humanity has yet invented .”

Take Devin, a recently released “ A.I. software engineer ” that was breathlessly touted by the tech press. A flesh-and-bones software developer named Carl Brown decided to take on Devin . A task that took the generative A.I.-powered agent over six hours took Mr. Brown just 36 minutes. Devin also executed poorly, running a slower, outdated programming language through a complicated process. “Right now the state of the art of generative A.I. is it just does a bad, complicated, convoluted job that just makes more work for everyone else,” Mr. Brown concluded in his YouTube video .

Cognition, Devin’s maker, responded by acknowledging that Devin did not complete the output requested and added that it was eager for more feedback so it can keep improving its product. Of course, A.I. companies are always promising that an actually useful version of their technology is just around the corner. “ GPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use again by a lot ,” Mr. Altman said recently while talking up GPT-5 at a recent event at Stanford University.

The reality is that A.I. models can often prepare a decent first draft. But I find that when I use A.I., I have to spend almost as much time correcting and revising its output as it would have taken me to do the work myself.

And consider for a moment the possibility that perhaps A.I. isn’t going to get that much better anytime soon. After all, the A.I. companies are running out of new data on which to train their models, and they are running out of energy to fuel their power-hungry A.I. machines . Meanwhile, authors and news organizations (including The New York Times ) are contesting the legality of having their data ingested into the A.I. models without their consent, which could end up forcing quality data to be withdrawn from the models.

Given these constraints, it seems just as likely to me that generative A.I. could end up like the Roomba, the mediocre vacuum robot that does a passable job when you are home alone but not if you are expecting guests.

Companies that can get by with Roomba-quality work will, of course, still try to replace workers. But in workplaces where quality matters — and where workforces such as screenwriters and nurses are unionized — A.I. may not make significant inroads.

And if the A.I. models are relegated to producing mediocre work, they may have to compete on price rather than quality, which is never good for profit margins. In that scenario, skeptics such as Jeremy Grantham, an investor known for correctly predicting market crashes, could be right that the A.I. investment bubble is very likely to deflate soon .

The biggest question raised by a future populated by unexceptional A.I., however, is existential. Should we as a society be investing tens of billions of dollars, our precious electricity that could be used toward moving away from fossil fuels, and a generation of the brightest math and science minds on incremental improvements in mediocre email writing?

We can’t abandon work on improving A.I. The technology, however middling, is here to stay, and people are going to use it. But we should reckon with the possibility that we are investing in an ideal future that may not materialize.

An “evocative, beautifully illustrated essay” on the intelligence mechanisms of fungi living on the forest floor has won University of Limerick student Evanna Winters the 2024 Mary Mulvihill Award.

The science media competition for third-level students commemorates the legacy of the late science journalist and author Mary Mulvihill and comes with a €2,000 prize. Róisín Ferguson, a student at Trinity College Dublin, received the judges’ highly commended award.

This year’s competition invited entries on the theme of intelligence, encompassing both the cognitive abilities that humans and other living beings possess and the rapidly developing field of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which combines great promise across many different areas of innovation with great threat.

Entries reflected the wide-ranging nature of the topic, including photography, essays, videos, audio pieces and multimedia formats ranging across biological computing; AI, intelligence and genetics, and the ethical and ecological consequences of our narrow conceptualisation of intelligence.

This extensive system exhibits a vital form of interconnectivity and communication, which challenges conventional understanding of intelligence. “Despite not having a central nervous system or brain,” she writes, “fungi display their intelligence through their vast mycelial networks, signalling patterns and their symbiotic relationships”.

At a microscopic level, she notes, mycelia “not only look like the neurons of a human brain, they act like them too”. To communicate, they send electrical impulses and electrolytes through the network, while some studies have found fungal electrical signalling resembles patterns of human speech.

Ferguson, a recent genetics graduate from TCD, took the ostensibly brainless scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz as the starting point for an ambitious exploration of the related concepts of intelligence and cognition – and the relationship of both to the brain and to more rudimentary information processing systems in “aneural organisms”, such as worms, plants, and microbes, which do not possess a brain.

Her entry comprised an audio essay and a recorded interview with Dr Kevin Mitchell, associate professor of neurobiology and genetics at TCD.

Dr. Abeba Birhane, senior fellow in trustworthy AI at the Mozilla Foundation and adjunct professor in the School of Computer Science, TCD, presented the awards at a ceremony hosted by Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies on Thursday.

Dr Birhane, with her colleague Siobhán Grayson received a prize in 2018, the second year of the competition, while she was a PhD student in UCD. Since then, she has become an internationally recognised researcher of the ethical and societal implications of AI and machine learning technologies, including audits and evaluations of large scale data sets and models exposing hate, racism and misogyny encoded within these systems.

She was named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in AI last year and is a member of the UN’s High Level Advisory Body on AI and of the Government’s AI Advisory Council.

“Deciphering AI hype and misleading claims from what is realistic has become a major problem, a problem whose best remedy is public education and reliable science communication. I’m grateful this initiative continues to keep the legacy of Mary Mulvihill and encourages and rewards important science communication work,” Dr Birhane said.

“We are all delighted to have two winning entries that Mary would have been excited to read, and two winners that she would have loved to meet and chat with,” said Anne Mulvihill, a sister of Mary and member of the judging panel.

The event included the annual Science@Culture talk, reviving a name Mary introduced in 1995 for an email bulletin (later a blog) that kept readers abreast of scientific activities and events.

Prof Mitchell, author of a number of popular science books on the brain, evolution and free will, gave a talk on “communicating complexity”. He considered the challenges of communicating complex topics to the general public in a way that engages without oversimplifying, and focused on the science and pseudoscience around autism as a particular example, examining its treatment in traditional media and the increasingly influential medium of podcasts.
