9 MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

The primary conceit of writer-director Januse Mohammed's 9 is about a comet upon entering the atmosphere leads to an electronic/electric shutdown for nine days. This concept has the makings of a wicked satire, but the maker decides to focus on a personal tale of equally intriguing opportunities, like how the obsession of an astrophysicist over the phenomenon leads to ghastly incidents in his household. 

The film follow astrophysicist Albert (played by Prithviraj), embarking on a scientific expedition along with his team of scientists as they entangle themselves in a series of spooky events when Albert chances upon a stranger, Ava during his first viewing of a comet. Accompanying Albert is his son Adam, played by master Alok.

The film starts with Albert's father accompanying him in a lunar eclipse. This scene may come across as inconsequential in due course of the film, but the initial portions ground the fable-like storytelling into reality. The first half invests attention to the minute details that results in much better surprises later, and the world building unfolds in a Shyamalan-esque manner, that is elaborate yet engaging. Hence a major portion of it does not happen at a breakneck speed.

The horror sequences are more thrilling in the second half as the stakes become higher and we begin rooting for them only at that point. The expository dialogue involving the comet in the early sequences are less complex and does not alienate the audience, full credits for the writer. The first half engages us with neatly staged and edited stretches, for instance, the stretch involving the supermarket on the eve of the phenomenon had a sense of a well made social commentary in it.

It is the second half that sucks us into the thrilling events as every setup finds its own resolve, like the burst of a buried landmine. The red herring unveils in front of us and when the deceptions become clear the film creates a race against time kind of situation. The film brilliantly uses light and shade to convey the mood of a situation (the film was shot by Abhinandan Ramanujan), for instance, a happy occasion like a father wishing his son a happy birthday is shot in a dimly lit interior, portraying the dysfunctional relationship between them.

Even the visual effects had a certain amount of believability in them. Wamiqa Gabbi's portrayal of Ava lends an eerie presence to the film and Master Alok is a revelation as Adam, as he conveys the desperation of the character with ease and excels even in the close-up shots, a quality that is found in experienced actors. After Koode, this film makes great use of Prithviraj's earnestness.

One wishes that the director had used more silence for us to be absorbed into the atmosphere of the film and Adam had a lot of scenes in the initial portions (the character of Adam feels a bit underwritten). But minor problems aside, what makes 9 work very well is the fact that the layers of sci-fi and horror are used to tell a story about unfocussed parenting, a universal theme that gives a deeper connection with the film.

9 (2019) Malayalam Movie Review – Veeyen

‘9’ could have done immensely better had it kept its focus on the sci-fi element that is probably one of the most unexplored realms in Malayalam cinema. What ruins it is the psychological drivel that it succumbs to, and the subsequent concoction that emerges that pleases fans of none of the genres.

In the opening sequence of Januse Mohammed’s ‘9’, Albert’s dad walks him out on an eclipse day, cardboard cartons thrown over their heads. The natural phenomenon over, Albert darts out one query after the other, all of which his dad patiently answers. As the sky clears up, his dad asserts that there is nothing wrong in asking questions and that when beset with doubts, he should look up at the sky and constantly seek answers.

Two and a half hours later, you walk out of the cinema hall, out into the night and ponder if you should stay back just a while. The sky appears a strange shade of blue, and you squint your eyes up at it, hoping to find the answers to those several queries that have bubbled up in your mind over the last couple of hours.

To be fair to Januse, he takes a chance and a massive one at that with ‘9’ and blends in what seems like three diverse genres  – science fiction, horror and clinical psychiatry – in a film that does justice to neither. There are the spurts and leaps that the film exhibits every now and then, but beyond these, ‘9’ makes do with some well acknowledged cinematic tropes.

Years later, Albert (Prithviraj) has had a tough job with parenting, as his son Adam (Alok) shows disquieting tendencies of turning delinquent. Expelled from school, following an untoward incident, a visibly disturbed Adam keeps saying that he misses his mom Annie (Mamta Mohandas) whom he has never actually seen, and who had passed away when he was born.

Albert is an astrophysicist who looks forward to a phenomenon that has sent the whole world into anxious raptures – the passing by of a comet that would bring all electronic communication on the planet to a standstill for the next nine days. It is then that Dr. Inayat Khan (Prakash Raj), his professor comes up with an offer that is impossible to refuse – that of heading over to a quaint old village in the Himalayas to work on a project for the Time magazine, and get to watch the comet in action from one of the best accessible view points in the world.

The D-day arrives, and the comet passes by, leaving a red trail that would hang around in the sky for the next nine days. Meanwhile Albert runs into a wolf that chases him out of the woods, and Ava (Wamiqa Gabbi) who lies unconscious with a smoldering piece of the comet tucked inside her backpack. Not much longer, Adam senses something wrong with Ava, and warns his dad that he should not believe everything that he sees.

The setting is grand, and ‘9’ strikes you as an ambitious project, especially in the initial minutes of the film. But Ava turns the tables around, and the film loosens its grip on us. The sci-fi bit disappears along with the comet and what we are left with is an ominous presence that glides around in curls of thick black smoke.

The film pushes along with  Ava emerging the perfect evil spirit and with several sequences that build on the horror that lurks in the air. It also remains without that cathartic event or a suggestion of it that would keep you focused, and eventually moves towards a climax that makes you shake your head in disbelief – chiefly at the comparable manner in which twists have started appearing in Prithviraj starrers of late. There is also the epilogue that is a purposeful add-on for the ones who still are in a mood to wrack your brains, and for the ones who aren’t, there is always the sky to look upon.

Prithviraj strives hard to make ‘9’ work, and as in all his films, gives it his very best, but is terribly restrained by the discrepancies in the script. The acting honour of the day however belongs to Wamiqa, who brings in the dread and terror that Ava spreads around with an icy composure. Alok who plays Adam  works wonders too with his large, doleful eyes, while actors as Mamta Mohandas and Prakash Raj lend steadfast support. ‘9’ is impressively shot as well, with cinematographer Abhinandan Ramanujan crafting dazzling frames, and the background score by Sekhar Menon is eerie to the core.

A clueless sci-fi juggling between genres.

9 then is not all smooth sailing, but because its missteps largely occur in passing (the mixed-up portrayal of mental health, the use of a stereotypical black-is-for-evil-white-is-for-good colour palette), once it settles into its rhythm, it is never less than entertaining and thought-provoking. A Sci-fi Film That Comes Into Its Own After It Turns Into A Psychological Thriller

Nine succeeds, to an extent, in covering up the writing flaws with superb production value and technology. The VFX, except for that comical fox, is convincing and creative-especially the star-lit dark sky, the reddish comet, and the black, cloudy ghostly invasion. Psycho thriller treading unfamiliar terrains

The only problem with Nine is its hurried climax, a grand revelation that lacks its indispensable crescendo. It required more build up and reel time before it slowly evolved to the point through more intriguing clues and calculations. The film features a highly skippable flashback song sequence, but it loses grit when the most crucial moment of the film arrives. Having said that, Nine is hardly mediocre any respect and the film is definitely a different and refreshing watch. (more)

9 movie story:  Set against the backdrop of a cosmic event, the film is about an emotional connect of a troubled relationship between a father and a son. When forces within and beyond this world conspire to snatch his son away, a father resolves to do whatever it takes to protect him.

Analysis:  9 is an experimental movie that deals with a unique concept that has rarely been explored in Malayalam cinema. Though the film is science fiction, director Jenuse Mohamed has nicely blended emotional and horror elements it. The flick is racy, crispy and edge on the seat thriller, say the audience.

Performance:  Prithviraj Sukumaran has essayed a never-played-before role and he has done good job in 9. His brilliant performance is the highlight of the movie. Prakash Raj, Wamiqa Gabbi, Mamta Mohandas, Tony Luke, Sekhar Menon, Master Alok, Vishal Krishna, Rahul Madhav and Adil Ibrahim have done justice to their roles and they also assets of the film, say the viewers.

Technical:  9 boasts of brilliant production values, which are on par with Hollywood standards. Brilliant picturisation, amazing background score and VFX works are the attractions on the technical front, add the film goers.

A comet passes the earth for nine days. Although it didn’t cause harm to the lives, the electronic appliances didn’t work, while the comet passes. Right from the mobile phones to certain type of vehicles, nothing works. The entire world stuns as nothing functions. To solve the issue, Albert Louis, the Astrophysicist and his son Adam visit the Himalayas. What did they do there? Did Louis find any solution? What happens to Adam? Did Supernatural powers exist? Watch the film in theaters.

Star Performance

Prithviraj has done his role neatly. He is very much comfort in playing the father role. His body language and expressions are flawless. Wamiqa’s performance is noteworthy. Master Alok has done an excellent job.

This genre is new to Mollywood. It is indeed a good attempt by Jenuse. The star casting is good. The screenplay is good. But, it raises a lot of questions and many of them are left unanswered. However, while moving to the next scene, the audiences forget those mysteries. Similarly, Wamiqa Gabbi’s character seems to have half-baked. However, she performs well. The music is great and the cinematography too.

• Some characters are not well defined

Nine is a fantastic genre to Mollywood. Prithviraj’s performance is stylish and it impresses the movie lovers. If you want to watch a performance-oriented supernatural horror thriller film, this film is the best choice, as of now.

9 Movie Review: A Ghost Prowls All Over The Plot, Leaving It Messed Up

The script of 9 goes all over with little sense or direction, and abysmally poor editing makes the film a hotchpotch affair. Read our review of the Malayalam horror movie here.

When The Exorcist came in 1973, it was sheer novelty to watch a pair of eyes turning blood red, a head rotating, green puke and the eerie noises that the apparition made. But 45 years later, Indian moviemakers have not been able to evolve or shake themselves off the ghost of The Exorcist . Just a while ago, there were any number of Tamil films that plotted stories on the supernatural, a trend that continues now with a Santhanam starrer playing in theatres.

But what seems a trifle disappointing is that Malayalam cinema, known for sensibility, is also starting to step into the ghostly arena with nothing new to show. Writer-director Jenuse Mohamed's 9 (yes that indeed is the title) with luminous actors Prithviraj and Prakash Raj essaying two scientists, much to my dismay (for I had hoped that these men would not involve themselves in a work of this kind), turned out to be an exercise in sheer stupidity. Yes, a moviemaker friend of mine from Singapore, Shilpa Krishnan, did warn me before I got into the cinema that much as she admired Prithviraj, he was increasingly disappointing her by doing bizarre roles. She was bang on.

The star plays an astro-physicist, Dr Albert Lewis, who lost his wife when his son, Adam (Alok), was born. When the film opens, the boy is seven, curious, naughty and even aggressive, getting into violent tiffs with his classmates that see him expelled from school. When Albert is worrying about what to do with the child, he gets an assignment from his mentor, a senior and well-regarded scientist, Dr Inayat Khan (Prakash Raj). He wants Albert to document the extremely rare celestial occurrence of a huge comet whizzing past the earth, and the best place to watch this would be the Himalayas. So, Khan packs off Albert and Adam, along with a couple of other scientists to a mountain resort – thinly populated. The ideal setting to get an eerie ghost story rolling. And with the comet's fly past resulting in a breakdown of electricity and modern communications for nine days when the object will be crossing the earth, what more can the spirits ask for.

If the plot is hollow, the writing is awfully lazy. While the supernatural being, played by Eva (Wamiqa Gabbi), is prowling around Adam, bullying him, terrifying him, his father is busy working from a watch tower, miles away from the huge bungalow where Khan has accommodated the two. All Adam has for company is a old servant, who himself looks haunted and ready to sink into the floor, and with Eva badgering the kid, the movie turns into a series of jump-starts with Mohamed relying on this boringly archaic technique to frighten his audiences. Startling them ever so often by thrusting the slimy spirit with blood-shot eyes into your face is nothing short of cheating.

Much like Manoj Night Shyamalan's early The Sixth Sense , Mohamad resorts to tricking his viewers with a climax that I felt really cheated about.

If the script goes all over with little sense or direction, abysmally poor editing makes 9 a hotchpotch affair. I could not understand (sorry for the spoiler here) why Khan would, when he was aware of Albert's psychiatric condition, send him to a desolate place with his little son. Albert subconsciously hates his son, and holds him responsible for his wife's death. He is, therefore, bent on harming the little lad. Dr Khan says all this in a sermon-like speech at the end.

9 is a work that is eminently avoidable. It's appalling that this kind of cinema even gets funded.

Ahead of 'Turbo' release, Mammootty explains why Malayalam film industry is delivering many hits

Claims that it is the audience who are controlling cinema

Mollywood superstar Mammootty , who is gearing up for the release of his action drama Turbo spoke about Mollywood delivering several hit films in recent times.

The actor, during a promotion event of Turbo in Dubai, said good movies are crafted and produced only when there are good audience.

The actor claimed that it is the audience who are controlling cinema and observed that only when the audience change, movies change.

Mammootty pointed out that there will be good movies when the audience decides to not watch badly made movies and choose to promote films that are good.

The actor's response came when he was asked if the recent success of Malayalam movies suggests that the taste of the audience is evolving or if the movies themselves are changing.

Several Malayalam movies in recent times , including Premalu, Manjummel Boys , Aavesham , Aadujeevitham and Bramayugam , have managed to win appreciation from audiences across India and high praise from critics.

"Only because our people encourage good cinema and come to watch them, good movies come up in Mollywood. Look at other languages; films there become flops as they are unable to understand the audience. It is the audience that controls cinema, totally," Mammootty said.

Turbo , d irected by Vysakh, and starring Kannada actor Raj B. Shetty, and Telugu actor Sunil along with Siddique, Bindu Panicker, Anjana Jayaprakash, Janardhanan, Siddique and Shabareesh Varma in the lead, hits theatres on May 23. The movie is expected to be an out-and-out action entertainer.

Mammootty's banter, Raj Shetty's villainy drive this imbalanced narrative | Turbo movie review

Recently released films saw Mammootty essaying some unique roles, including a closeted homosexual and an ageing tantrik. His latest outing Turbo, however, presents the megastar as we have seen him before, both in style and character. In 'Turbo' directed by Vysakh, he sheds his serious avatar and delights his fans with a carefree performance, showcasing a sunny man who finds joy in playing big brother to his younger friends. His innocent, yet impulsive mannerisms land him in major trouble, especially with goons, much to the chagrin of his mother played by Bindu Panicker. It is the chemistry between Mammootty and Bindu, who had shared screenspace earlier in 'Rorschach' , that drives the first half of the movie.

Mammootty, who has proved his mettle to handle comedy with films like 'Rajamanickyam', Pranchiyettan and the Saint' and 'Kottayam Kunjachan', rises to the occasion in 'Turbo' too, offering the audience some good laughs, though the movie is by and large an action thriller. This is where 'Turbo' falters since the movie tries to blend several genres. Midhun Manuel Thomas, who wrote the screenplay, starts the movie with a murder and then shifts to a fun narrative before moving the story to Chennai, where most of the action takes place. Midhun has proved his capability as a writer with films like 'Anjaam Pathiraa', 'Aadu'. But in recent times, with movies like 'Ozler' and 'Garudan', he seems to have struggled to bring freshness and originality to his scripts. In 'Turbo' too, though he has managed bring intrigues to some scenes, flat storytelling hampers the movie.

However, the saving grace is the interesting action sequences. It is impressive to watch Mammootty handle guns, cars and villains with ease that defies his age. The makers have ensured that Mammootty gets his mass moment at the climax of the movie. Turbo Jose's face-off with the villain Vettrivel Shanmugha Sundaran played by Kannada actor Raj B Shetty is another highlight of the film.

Raj, who made his debut in Mollywood with the movie, plays an effective villain, showcasing his ability to shine in whatever roles he gets. Vettrivel resembles Varman (Vinayakan) in 'Jailer' with the way he handles his victims, though Vettrivel is less eccentric and more menacing. Anjana Jayaprakash, who was seen in Akhil Satyan's 'Pachuvum Athbuthavilakkum', plays Indulekha in the movie. Her character is well-written, and leaves an impression among the audience. Shabareesh Varma too plays his role well. The background score by Christo Xavier too blends well with the mood of the film.
