Apart from having been stuck on a significantly slower broadband of M200 as opposed to the M500 now available, I also discovered that I've been paying £9.99 each month since 2016 for something called Homeworks - a service that, now that I know what it is, I wouldn't have agreed to sign up to had I ever been asked. That's a considerable chunk of money lost to something I never knew I was paying for. It feels rather rubbish to have been duped for being a long-standing customer who always pays on time by DD. Maybe other Virgin Media customers should check their packages for this hidden outgoing of Homeworks...
NES wrote: » Thank you for your reply. I suspected I might have someone point out the obvious... However. The very reason I posted is because I absolutely did not agree to such a service. It's not a case of being forgetful. It is distinctly not, and never would have been, something I would ever need or want. And yes, the item is listed just as all the other items on the package - but there are no breakdown of amounts allocated beside each item. I simply took broadband service with Homeworks written beside it to be the name of the broadband service itself. I simply wanted to let others know they may have the hidden cost of Homeworks inadvertently on their bill too.

PRESS RELEASE

17 september 2020, virgin media business launch dedicated business 4g start-up and back-up services plus enhanced homeworking offer.

  • Virgin Media Business launch 4G Start-up and 4G Back-up services to get businesses connected quicker and help them stay connected if services are disrupted
  • Launch follows enhanced HomeWorks offer which provides security, IT support and next day engineer visits for homeworkers

Virgin Media Business has today launched new business-grade 4G Back-up and Start-up services which will help businesses across the country get online faster and stay connected.

The 4G Back-up service provides small businesses with an unlimited 4G dongle which can be plugged into their existing router and used to keep them connected in the unlikely event of an interruption to their fixed broadband service. If broadband services are interrupted, the router will automatically switch to 4G, meaning no disruption or inconvenience for customers. The service, which costs just £7 per month and is available on all Voom Fibre business broadband packages, comes with unlimited data so customers can continue working as usual without worrying about their data use, offering businesses complete peace of mind.

Getting businesses connected quicker

Alongside this, Virgin Media Business has also launched a 4G Start-up service which means eligible businesses can get connected in as little as four days. Virgin Media Business will send customers a new router and 4G dongle which they can use to get connected immediately rather than having to wait for an engineer to finish installing their fibre business broadband. This service is ideal for new customers who want to get online quickly – such as those switching from other providers or moving premises – but who require an engineer to install their services. The 4G Start-up service is available on all Voom business broadband packages and costs £40 for the first month.

Supporting homeworkers

For Virgin Media customers working from home using their home broadband connection, the recently enhanced HomeWorks service allows them to benefit from business-grade service levels. With HomeWorks, customers benefit from next day priority engineer call-outs, security for up to 5 devices with F-Secure SAFE and 24/7 IT support for gadgets with Gadget Rescue. Wi-Fi Boosters can also be used throughout the home to banish WiFi blackspots. HomeWorks costs £9.99 per month but customers can currently get it for £6 per month when taken with any speed upgrade.

Gregg Pearce, Director of SOHO at Virgin Media , said: “Our new 4G Start-up and Back-up services provides complete reassurance for businesses wanting to get online and stay connected no matter what. We know that providing a reliable and always-on connection is essential and are pleased to be supporting UK small business to rebound with disruption-free connectivity they can depend on.”

Hands on: Virgin Media Super Hub 3 review

Is vm’s new router a worthy update.

what is virgin media homeworks

Early Verdict

If basic broadband duties (i.e. web surfing) are all you require, then the SH3 is likely to fit the bill perfectly. But if the broadband quality/QoS is what you’re looking for, then the SH2ac is still probably the better of the two, at least until the issues with the new router are solved.

Ready for VoIP

Stronger signal compared to previous model

Intuitive backend

Serious performance issues

Lack of USB ports

Massive power supply unit

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

Update: This could be the SuperHub 4 , the follow up to the Super Hub 3.

Existing Virgin Media customers can now get their hands on a brand new router if they want to (new customers get it by default, of course).

Launched almost a year ago now, the redesigned Hub 3.0 (or Super Hub 3) shares the same vertical form factor as its predecessors but adopts a more industrial, harsher, utilitarian design.

The router (also known as the VMDG505) is available to all new Virgin Media broadband customers for free, as mentioned. Existing customers can upgrade to it for a fee, with the device supporting the company’s maximum download speed of 300Mbps (that’s Virgin Media’s HomeWorks).

However, since this is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem with 24 bonded downstream channels and eight upstream ones, the theoretical download and upload speeds are far, far higher (912Mbps and 216Mbps respectively).

Sadly, the Super Hub 3 is not DOCSIS 3.1 compatible which would have made it the first mainstream broadband router to support multi-gigabit download and upload speeds (up to a theoretical 10Gbps/2Gbps).

what is virgin media homeworks

Available in black or white, the router looks a bit like a small speaker – thanks to its grilled sides – and blends seamlessly in with any modern décor. Congrats to the design team for coming up with something that looks less like a bland piece of tech and more like a piece of art.

The front panel hosts the Wi-Fi light, the internet activity light, a phone light, a power LED and the WPS button. In normal operation, one white soft light should remain on unlike the blinking blue lights on the previous one.

Around the back you get two inactive/disabled telephone ports, four Gigabit Ethernet ports, a reset button, the power switch, a port for the power cable and the coaxial cable connector.

Setting up the router is a doddle and doesn’t require any specific skill other than the ability to use the bundled proprietary spanner.

Virgin Media’s online do-it-yourself guides are as straightforward as can be, and if you run into any issues, an operator can run a diagnostic test remotely and decide whether to send an engineer onsite.

Note that the router comes with stickers featuring your login details so that you can display these around the house; just be careful that these aren’t visible through your windows. There’s also a removable card slotted in the router’s base, along with yet another sticker underneath the device.

Inside is where all the action happens. The modem, which is built by Arris and is known as the TG2492LG-VM (there’s even a mention on the bottom plate), is packed with five antennas but doesn’t have any USB ports.

This means you won’t be able to connect a hard drive or a printer to it directly; a rather major let-down compared to some of the competition on the market.

The two telephone ports pave the way for a potential VoIP service. Currently, the phone connection on Virgin Media is physically separate from the broadband one – merging the two together makes sense and could lead to some serious cost savings and ease problem solving.

There’s support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi with up to three spatial streams on the 5GHz band. Other features include Web Safe, F-Secure SAFE and the usual DHCP and firewall which can be tweaked.

what is virgin media homeworks

The modem comes with a rather big power supply unit, a far heftier one compared to the previous Super Hub . Both are rated at 65W (20V, 3.25A) and have the same physical connector – while the increase in size won’t bother many, modems are often positioned in cramped spaces which makes massive PSUs a tad unsightly.

For our hands on, the router was connected on a 50Mbps Virgin Media broadband fibre line which means that the modem was never totally maxed out; it didn’t even break a sweat (although it did warm up a bit).

The Super Hub 3 wasn’t used for anything other than bog-standard web browsing. There have been reports about issues encountered by users, especially gamers and anyone whose work can be affected by high latency.

Others have reported problems when the router was put in modem mode and connected to another router. Many said that the Super Hub would just shut down the port used by the external router.

Last December, the root of the issue was identified as the Intel Puma 6 chipset that powers the modem, and the semiconductor giant has confirmed that there will be a firmware update that should, in theory, eliminate excessive lag and packet loss.

Don’t expect that firmware to be released anytime soon, though, as it will have to be validated and extensively tested before it’s rolled out to potentially millions of routers across the country. Note that the latest firmware is 9.1.116V at the time of writing.

(Virgin Media got back to us saying that they are currently working with the Hub 3.0 manufacturer on implementing the relevant fix.)

The backend user interface offers a clean dashboard with all the essential features and three easy to access, quick setup wizards that allow you to configure your Wi-Fi connection, diagnose any glitches on your network, and modify your guest network.

what is virgin media homeworks

It’s worth noting that the modem status overview includes Telephony which alludes to a future offering that will include out-of-the-box VoIP telephony.

Unlike the previous Superhub, this model shows one SSID that covers both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. By default, the modem offers a mixed mode option on the 5GHz band, but you might want to limit it to 802.11ac if you encounter any connectivity issues.

The signal strength on the previous router troughed at -80dBm and -85dBm on 2.4GHz and 5GHz respectively, while that was marginally better for the Super Hub 3 at -76dBm and -85dBm for these two bands.

The test was carried out using Wi-Fi Analyser on the same smartphone in the worst part of the property used for testing (no line of sight, two brick walls, a fridge and staircases in-between).

Early verdict

The brief encounter we had with the modem reasserted the belief that this is a non-essential upgrade to any existing customer already using the Super Hub 2ac.

There is a slight improvement on the signal strength and you might get this new model for free if you haggle with customer service, but the issues identified make it too big a risk for anyone who needs more than bog-standard broadband.

Gamers and enthusiasts will probably be better off downgrading to the Super Hub 2ac and using it as a modem with a top-of-the-range router.

Want 300Mbps on Virgin Media Today, Add the Home Works Upgrade

Last month Virgin Media announced that their SME (business) focused 300Mbps broadband package would be extended to “ home office workers ” in March 2016 ( here ) and now one of our readers has spotted ( here ) that domestic customers can take it by adding the ‘ Home Works ‘ upgrade.

The Home Works add-on normally costs £9.99 per month on top of your existing subscription and this gives home customers access to Virgin Media ’s enhanced technical support features (e.g. TuneUp and Gadget Rescue), F-Secure SAFE® security (Internet security), F-Secure® Key (encrypted password management), discounts on GoDaddy web hosting and other Virgin Affinity offers.

However anybody who flicks forward to order the service will be treated to this little bit of extra information.

HomeWorks + up to 300Mbps When home is your head office, you’ll want to know your connection is powerful enough to keep your business and your home life running smoothly. Enjoy our best connection with HomeWorks + up to 300Mbps* broadband for an additional £13.99 a month for the first 24 months (minimum 3 month term, usual price £19.99 a month).

Apparently the enhanced upgrade is only available to customers who have, or upgrade to, a Virgin Media “ up to 200Mbps ” broadband product and the new 300Mbps top speed is also only “ available in certain areas ” (a £9.99 activation fee applies on top of the monthly rental).

At that cost the price of admission to a 300Mbps service is probably a bit too high for ordinary consumers (mind you it’s not really intended for them) and at the same time we note that a fair few subscribers in certain areas are still struggling with capacity issues, which sadly won’t be resolved by simply ordering a faster speed.

All you need to know about Virgin Media Broadband

Originally founded by Richard Branson in 1989, Virgin Mobile and Virgin.net merged with NTL and Telewest in 2006 to become the UK’s first ‘quad play’ provider. They have since gone on to become one of the biggest broadband providers in the country, and thanks to its own dedicated cable infrastructure, is able to offer astonishingly fast broadband speeds available to around 60% of households in the UK.

Let's take a look in more detail at what Virgin Media Broadband has to offer.

  • Virgin Media Broadband packages

Virgin Media have a wide range of broadband packages which are split into a choice of speeds.

Unlike other providers, Virgin Media installs its own cables instead of relying on the Openreach network. This means that as well as being able to offer broadband without a phone line, they are not being restricted to the speeds they can offer. With speeds in excess of 350Mb, they have the fastest widely available broadband in the UK.

M50 - Average download speeds of 54Mb and upload speeds of 5Mb. Perfect for small households with up to 4 devices.

M125 - Average download speeds of 132Mb and upload speeds of 20Mb. For busy households with 5-9 devices.

M250 - Average download speeds of 264Mb and upload speeds of 25Mb. For households with 10+ devices.

M350 - Average download speeds of 362Mb and upload speeds of 36Mb. Perfect for large households and gamers.

M500 - Aaverage download speeds of 516Mb and upload speeds of 36Mb. For superfast downloads and super-connected homes.

Gig1 - In December 2021 Virgin Media rolled out Ultrafast Gigabit broadband across its entire network. With download speeds averaging 1,130Mb it is the UK’s fastest widely available broadband.

Gig2 - Launched in February 2024, Gig2 is currently limited to customers on the nexfibre network, with coverage approaching 1 million premises.

  • Virgin Media Home Phone

If you don't use your landline, then Virgin Media is one of the few providers that offers broadband without a phone line. But there is still the option to include a phone package if you choose to. Options include:

  • Weekend chatter - Unlimited Saturday and Sunday calls to UK landline (01, 02, 03) numbers
  • Evening & weekend chatter - Unlimited calls to UK landline (01, 02, 03) numbers, UK mobiles... 7pm to 7am weekdays, all day Saturday & Sunday
  • Anytime chatter - Unlimited calls to UK landline (01, 02, 03) numbers, UK mobiles... 24/7
  • International anytime chatter - Unlimited calls to mobiles & landlines abroad in 50 destinations. Plus, UK landline (01, 02, 03) numbers, UK mobiles. 24/7
  • Why choose Virgin Media Broadband?

Fastest Speeds

Virgin Media's main appeal is its superfast speeds, currently up to seven times faster than Sky and BT, with some areas getting over 1Gb. It's worth bearing in mind though that even their slowest speed of 50Mb is more than enough for your average household just looking to browse the internet and stream movies.

WiFi guarantee

Virgin Media’s WiFi guarantee, WiFi Max , promises fast, reliable WiFi gliding through every room or money back.

The guarantee is included free on Gig 1 broadband and Volt bundles, or £8 a month with M50-M500 packages.

Read our full guide on Virgin Media’s WiFi Max guarantee

Intelligent WiFi and Virgin Media Connect App

Built into the Hub 3, Intelligent WiFi is designed to automatically sort any WiFi issues for you. The Hub 3 optimises itself and seamlessly switches devices to the best channel.

Use the Connect App to scan your home for WiFi blackspots. If you find a blackspot you can use the app to order a WiFi booster. You can also use the app to pause WiFi to specific devices.

Virgin Media O2 Volt

Volt is the first joint product following the merger of Virgin Media and O2 back in June 2021. The Volt products, which replaced the old Virgin Media ‘Oomph’ bundles, give customers access to special benefits simply by being customers of both brands.

VOLT bundles include the following extras:

  • Free Virgin Media broadband speed boost to the next level (if you are not already on the fastest speed).
  • Double mobile data for every O2 pay monthly mobile plan registered under your name in your household.
  • Free Wi-Fi boosters (or Wi-Fi Pods, as Virgin calls them) to extend Wi-Fi coverage in your home.
  • Roam in 75 destinations, with O2 Travel Inclusive Zone.
  • Get up to £150 off an O2 Custom Plan for a connected device when you take out a phone on a new O2 Custom Plan.

No Traffic Management

In 2018, Virgin Media announced they would no longer be using traffic management, no matter which broadband package you take.

Web Safe and F-Secure SAFE

Virgin Media customers can take advantage of their free Web Safe. This protects any device that’s connected to your network at home. You can easily block access to fraudulent or unsuitable websites, as well as staying protected against viruses.

For an added layer of protection, Virgin Media customers get Virgin Media Internet Security powered by F-Secure on unlimited devices. You’ll pay nothing for 3 months then just £3 a month (or £30 a year).

Free Servicing and Repairs

Servicing and repairs are included free of charge with all packages, giving you that extra peace of mind should your hub break.

Designed for those who work from home, Virgin Media’s HomeWorks will help keep your business running smoothly, or at least the broadband side of it. Available for an additional £9.99 a month, features include:

  • Next Day Priority Service if you need an engineer
  • Gadget Rescue to help sort any IT gremlins
  • TuneUp to help optimise your WiFi
  • F-Secure Safe and F-Secure Key
  • What's bad about Virgin Media Broadband?

Complex installation for new customers

If your home is already set up for Virgin then you should find installation fairly simple. However if your home isn’t set up then things get a little more complicated as engineers will need to install cabling.

Not available everywhere

Whilst using it’s own cable network means people can enjoy blazingly fast speeds, the downside is it just doesn’t have the same availability as the Openreach network. Virgin Media Broadband is currently available to around 60% of UK homes, compared to BT and Sky who are between 90% and 95% of UK households.

  • What equipment do I get?

Hub 3 - Virgin Media Broadband customers will receive the mighty Hub 3. With Intelligent WiFi, the Hub 3 seamlessly handles multiple devices and makes sure you get the most reliable signal.

Hub 4 - Virgin Media's only hub powerful enough to handle the Gig1 package. The Hub 4 has intelligent WiFi Boosters to help banish any WiFi blackspots in your home. Available only to those on the Gig1 package.

  • Frequently asked questions

How much does Virgin Media Broadband cost?

Virgin Media Broadband packages aren’t the cheapest option, they are a premium service due to them offering faster broadband speeds. How much you spend depends on the package you choose. Virgin Media Broadband packages start from £24 per month. View all the latest Virgin Media Broadband deals.

How fast is Virgin Media Broadband?

Virgin Media offers some of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, with average speeds of 54Mb, 108Mb, 213Mb, 362Mb and 516Mb. Their fastest widely available average speeds are 7x faster than BT and Sky’s.

Can I get Virgin Media Broadband without a landline?

Yes. Virgin Media has its own network of cables that are completely independent of the Openreach network. This means that as well as being able to offer incredible speeds, you can get Virgin Media Broadband without a landline.

Is Virgin Media Broadband any good?

Virgin Media may be expensive compared to other budget providers, but if speed is your main concern then you’ll struggle to find better. I pay a monthly fee for Homeworks. My wife can no longer access her Blueyonder email account - probably a password issue. I reported the issue on Monday. First line support couldn't resolve and raised a ticket for second line - 5 - 7 working days. Then I remembered Homeworks and the priority care offered. I called the gadget line.

Ah well it is an extra paid-for service (£9.95 a month on top of your normal bill, I believe), which VM mugs customers who need to work from home and hence have a greater reliance on an internet connection over and above watching cat videos on Facebook, could sign up for, pay the money and gain 'extra' support!

Don't use Virgin Media to work from home. Their T&Cs explicitly state the service is not intended for that use. If it goes down don't expect any help even if you depend on it for your livelihood.
