Oxford retains top spot in world rankings for sixth consecutive year

The University of Oxford remains top of the table in latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings

Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the results of the THE World University Rankings 2022, with the University of Oxford retaining top spot for an impressive sixth consecutive year.

In a year dominated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the rankings reflect the vital role of universities in understanding and managing the crisis as a number of institutions around the world saw significant boosts in their citation scores (a measure of a university’s research influence and impact in spreading new knowledge and ideas) from Covid-19 focused research.

Professor Louise Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, said: 'My colleagues and I are absolutely delighted to have achieved the top ranking again. There are many great universities around the world and we are proud to be in their company.

'This past year has demonstrated to our publics, our governments, and even to ourselves just how much universities can contribute to society. The vaccine Oxford developed is being distributed in over 170 countries and over a billion doses have been manufactured. Together our universities have made the strongest possible case for renewed public investment in research universities.'

This year’s rankings – based on a methodology that includes analysis of 14.4 million research publications, a survey of 22,000 academics around the world and data on teaching, research – saw a record 1,662 universities from 99 countries and regions appear in the table.

Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer at THE, commented: 'The THE World University Rankings 2022 consistently prove that the UK is home to one of the world’s very best higher education systems. But while these rankings contain an element of competition, more importantly they’re about understanding strengths and weaknesses in an international context. Although the UK has seen some good results this year, Covid-19 has provided new challenges to add to those related to the impact of Brexit.

'These challenges mean the UK must work hard to attract international students and academic talent to contribute to its knowledge economy in both the short and long-term. With mainland China and Germany rising, this will be essential for the UK to retain its position as a higher education superpower.'

University Rankings

Competition among universities is increasing. University rankings are, therefore, being followed more closely than ever. Here is a selection of rankings:

Worldwide rankings

Times higher education world university rankings (great britain).

In the current issue of this ranking, the TU Berlin was placed 136th. In Germany, it achieved 13th place, and 3rd when compared to Germany’s other major technical universities. The annual ranking from the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) is based on the five core categories of teaching, international outlook, industry income, research, and citations. For the current issue, about 1900 universities worldwide were included; 52 of those universities are in Germany. (Sept. 2023) In the subject-specific "THE World University Rankings by subject", the TU Berlin achieved the distinction of being ranked among the 100 best universities in the world for Computer Science (56th), Engineering and Technology (75th) as well as physical sciences (89th). (Oct. 2023) Furthermore, TU Berlin placed 10th in the "Digital Leaders in Higher Education" ranking. (April 2023)

QS Top Universities Ranking (Great Britain)

In the current ranking, the TU Berlin is now in 154th place worldwide. Within Germany, the TU achieved 8th place, and 4th among Germany's major technical universities. (June 2023) The subject-specific QS World University Rankings by Subject also award the TU Berlin top scores, especially in technical and engineering areas. In these subject groups, it was ranked 52nd globally and 3rd in Germany. The best individual ratings were achieved by Architecture (ranked 18th globally and 1st nationally). (March 2023)

Academic Ranking of World Universities (China)

In the worldwide TOP 500 ranking from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the TU Berlin is currently listed among the best 400 universities in the world. In Germany, it was placed in the 20th to 25th place category, and 5th among Germany's technical universities. (2022)

U-Multirank (Germany/Netherlands)

In contrast to other rankings, in the "U-Multirank" there are no set best lists. Instead, each user defines their most important criteria and then receives an individually created ranking. The EU-funded project is supervised by the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) and includes more than 2200 universities worldwide.

German rankings

Humboldt ranking.

The Humboldt Ranking counts the research stays of fellowship recipients and award winners from the Humboldt Foundation at German research institutions. Between 2018 and 2022, a total of 129 international researchers chose the TU Berlin for their research stays, putting it in 8th place in the ranking. In engineering sciences, it was ranked an impressive 2nd, and 6th in natural sciences. (Nov. 2023)

German Research Foundation (DFG) Funding Atlas

The funding atlas offers key figures for publicly funded research in Germany. Every three years, it gives an overview of external funding from the DFG, the German Federal Government, and the EU as well as funding of individuals from the AvH, the DAAD, and the ERC and evaluates these funding sources for universities and non-university research institutions. The current ranking states which universities received the most DFG funds between 2017 and 2019. With a total of EUR 141.8 million, TU Berlin was ranked 26th. In natural sciences and in engineering it was ranked 9th. For engineering scientists with AvH or DAAD funding, the TU Berlin is the second and third most popular host university respectively, for natural scientists it is fourth and fifth most popular. (2021)

DAAD Funding Ranking

According to the latest statistics published by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the TU Berlin received 10,146,393 euros in funding in 2021. This means fourth place among all the universities in Germany. (June 2022)

Academic subjects

Che university ranking.

The University Ranking from the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) helps prospective students find the right university. The overview includes both bachelor and master degrees. Each subject is re-evaluated every three years.

Surveys of companies

The ranking was carried out by the consulting firm Universum Communications and published in the magazine WirtschaftsWoche. According to the assessment of about 500 HR officers across Germany, TU Berlin came in 1st place in computer science and 2nd place in mechanical engineering. (May 2023)

QS Graduate Employability Ranking

The ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in Great Britain links several thematically relevant issues. Besides assessments from 44,000 employers worldwide, the ranking includes (research) cooperation with the industrial sector, the presence of companies on campus (at career fairs, career workshops, and similar offers for students), the alumni employment rate, and information concerning where some 29,000 internationally influential people were educated. In total, the TU Berlin ranked 111-120th globally and 34th in Europe, with the numerous and diverse contacts between companies and students being given particular prominence. Among the 14 German universities that were evaluated, the TU Berlin came in 4th place. (Sept. 2021)

Times Higher Education Global University Employability Ranking

The question which graduates were especially well-prepared for the job market is the central focus of trendence's global ranking, which included surveys of employers in 24 countries. In international comparison, TU Berlin graduates are well-prepared and helped their alma mater achieve a place among the top 100 universities (53rd) worldwide. In Germany, the TU Berlin was ranked 3rd. (Nov. 2022)

F.A.Z. Economists Ranking

For their economists ranking, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (F.A.Z.) determined the level of influence scientists have in the media, politics and research. For the detailed ranking of economic researchers, the F.A.Z. counted citations in science and the most important media, a survey was conducted of politicians at both federal and state level, and the individual's twitter ranking was evaluated. In the ranking, Ottmar Edenhofer, professor for the economics of climate change at the TU Berlin, director of the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) and chief economist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), was ranked 15th, and Gert G. Wagner, professor of empirical economic research and economic policy at the TU Berlin and member of the board at the DIW Berlin, was 25th. (Sept. 2021)

Business Administration Ranking by Wirtschaftswoche

The ranking commissioned by the magazine "WirtschaftsWoche" examines the performance of business administration professors in the German-speaking region based on their publications in international journals. In the "lifetime" category, which evaluates the scholarly achievements of business economists, three professors from TU Berlin were ranked: Prof. Dr. Knut Blind (Chair of Innovation Economics) achieved the 100th position, closely followed by Prof. Dr. Reinhard Busse (Chair of Health Care Management) at 104th place. Prof. Dr. Axel von Werder (Chair of Organization and Corporate Management) secured the 137th position.
