United states, ups announces strategic initiatives and three-year financial targets.

~ai-605935bb-4282-49cb-8eb3-7125a90a3b80_

ATLANTA, GA – March 26, 2024 – UPS (NYSE:UPS) will host its investor and analyst conference today at its Worldport air hub in Louisville, KY beginning at 9:15 a.m. ET. At the conference, the company will share details of its strategic growth and productivity initiatives and discuss its three-year financial targets. The event will also be available through a live webcast and replay at investors.ups.com .

Under a better and bolder approach, UPS will continue its Customer First, People Led, Innovation Driven strategy, and is positioning itself to become the premium small package provider and logistics partner in the world.

During the conference, UPS will highlight several strategic initiatives that will enable market share capture and expand its addressable market to drive incremental growth. In addition, the company will share details about how it will lower its cost to serve through its Network of the Future initiative, a plan that will optimize and further automate its core integrated network.

“We executed the strategy we set forth nearly three years ago by changing almost every aspect of our business. After coming off a difficult market in 2023, the small package industry is poised to return to growth in 2024 and beyond. Over the next three years, we plan to make bold moves to create a growth flywheel in premium markets, while at the same time drive higher productivity and efficiency,” said Carol Tomé, UPS chief executive officer. “The growth and productivity initiatives we are executing will result in higher revenue, expanded operating margins and increased free cash flow to deliver long-term value to our shareowners.”

2026 Financial Targets

The company provides certain guidance on an adjusted (non-GAAP) basis because it is not possible to predict or provide a reconciliation reflecting the impact of future unanticipated events, which would be included in reported (GAAP) results and could be material.

Today the company will discuss its 2026 financial targets as follows:

  • Consolidated revenue ranging from approximately $108 billion to approximately $114 billion.
  • Consolidated adjusted * operating margin above 13%.
  • U.S. Domestic Package segment adjusted * operating margin of at least 12%.
  • International Package segment adjusted * operating margin between 18% and 19%.
  • Supply Chain Solutions adjusted * operating margin of around 12%.
  • Free cash flow * of between $17 billion and $18 billion.
  • Capital spending from 2024–2026 of approximately 5.5% of total revenue.

* Represents a non-GAAP financial measure. See the appendix to this release for a discussion of non-GAAP financial measures.

Forward-Looking Statements

This release, our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2023 and our other filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission contain and in the future may contain “forward-looking statements” within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Statements other than those of current or historical fact, and all statements accompanied by terms such as “will,” “believe,” “project,” “expect,” “estimate,” “assume,” “intend,” “anticipate,” “target,” “plan,” and similar terms, are intended to be forward-looking statements. Forward-looking statements are made subject to the safe harbor provisions of the federal securities laws pursuant to Section 27A of the Securities Act of 1933 and Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934.

From time to time, we also include written or oral forward-looking statements in other publicly disclosed materials. Forward-looking statements may relate to our intent, belief, forecasts of, or current expectations about our strategic direction, prospects, future results, or future events; they do not relate strictly to historical or current facts. Management believes that these forward-looking statements are reasonable as and when made. However, caution should be taken not to place undue reliance on any forward-looking statements because such statements speak only as of the date when made and the future, by its very nature, cannot be predicted with certainty.

Forward-looking statements are subject to certain risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from our historical experience and our present expectations or anticipated results. These risks and uncertainties include, but are not limited to: changes in general economic conditions in the U.S. or internationally; significant competition on a local, regional, national and international basis; changes in our relationships with our significant customers; our ability to attract and retain qualified employees; strikes, work stoppages or slowdowns by our employees; increased or more complex physical or operational security requirements; a significant cybersecurity incident, or increased data protection regulations; our ability to maintain our brand image and corporate reputation; impacts from global climate change; interruptions in or impacts on our business from natural or man-made events or disasters including terrorist attacks, epidemics or pandemics; exposure to changing economic, political, regulatory and social developments in international and emerging markets; our ability to realize the anticipated benefits from acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures or strategic alliances; the effects of changing prices of energy, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, other fuels and interruptions in supplies of these commodities; changes in exchange rates or interest rates; our ability to accurately forecast our future capital investment needs; increases in our expenses or funding obligations relating to employee health, retiree health and/or pension benefits; our ability to manage insurance and claims expenses; changes in business strategy, government regulations or economic or market conditions that may result in impairments of our assets; potential additional U.S. or international tax liabilities; potential claims or litigation related to labor and employment, personal injury, property damage, business practices, environmental liability and other matters; and other risks discussed in our filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission from time to time, including our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2023, and subsequently filed reports. You should consider the limitations on, and risks associated with, forward-looking statements and not unduly rely on the accuracy of predictions contained in such forward-looking statements. We do not undertake any obligation to update forward-looking statements to reflect events, circumstances, changes in expectations or the occurrence of unanticipated events after the date of those statements.

From time to time, we expect to participate in analyst and investor conferences. Materials provided or displayed at those conferences, such as slides and presentations, may be posted on our investor relations website at www.investors.ups.com under the heading "Presentations" when made available. These presentations may contain new material nonpublic information about our company and you are encouraged to monitor this site for any new posts, as we may use this mechanism as a public announcement.

Non-GAAP Financial Measures; Reconciliations

From time to time we supplement the reporting of our financial information determined under generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP") with certain non-GAAP financial measures.

We believe that these non-GAAP measures provide meaningful information to assist users of our financial statements in more fully understanding our financial results and cash flows and assessing our ongoing performance, because they exclude items that may not be indicative of, or are unrelated to, our underlying operations and may provide a useful baseline for analyzing trends in our underlying businesses. These non-GAAP measures are used internally by management for business unit operating performance analysis, business unit resource allocation and in connection with incentive compensation award determinations.

Non-GAAP financial measures should be considered in addition to, and not as an alternative for, our reported results prepared in accordance with GAAP. Our adjusted financial information does not represent a comprehensive basis of accounting. Therefore, our adjusted financial information may not be comparable to similarly titled information reported by other companies.

Forward-Looking Non-GAAP Metrics

From time to time when presenting forward-looking non-GAAP metrics, we are unable to provide quantitative reconciliations to the most closely correlated GAAP measure due to the uncertainty in the timing, amount or nature of any adjustments, which could be material in any period.

Transformation Charges, and Goodwill, Asset Impairment and Divestiture Charges

We supplement the presentation of our operating profit, operating margin, income before income taxes, net income and earnings per share with non-GAAP measures that exclude the impact of charges related to transformation activities, and goodwill, asset impairment and divestiture charges. We believe excluding the impact of these charges better enables users of our financial statements to view and evaluate underlying business performance from the perspective of management. We do not consider these costs when evaluating the operating performance of our business units, making decisions to allocate resources or in determining incentive compensation awards.

One-Time Compensation Payment

We supplement the presentation of our operating profit, operating margin, income before income taxes, net income and earnings per share with non-GAAP measures that exclude the impact of a one-time payment made to certain U.S.-based, non-union part-time supervisors following the ratification of our labor agreement with the Teamsters. We do not expect this or similar payments to recur. We believe excluding the impact of this one-time payment better enables users of our financial statements to view and evaluate underlying business performance from the same perspective as management.

Defined Benefit Pension and Postretirement Medical Plan Gains and Losses

We recognize changes in the fair value of plan assets and net actuarial gains and losses in excess of a 10% corridor (defined as 10% of the greater of the fair value of plan assets or the plan's projected benefit obligation), as well as gains and losses resulting from plan curtailments and settlements, for our pension and postretirement defined benefit plans immediately as part of Investment income and other in the statements of consolidated income. We supplement the presentation of our income before income taxes, net income and earnings per share with adjusted measures that exclude the impact of these gains and losses and the related income tax effects. We believe excluding these defined benefit pension and postretirement medical plan gains and losses provides important supplemental information by removing the volatility associated with plan amendments and short-term changes in market interest rates, equity values and similar factors.

Free Cash Flow

We calculate free cash flow as cash flows from operating activities less capital expenditures, proceeds from disposals of property, plant and equipment, and plus or minus the net changes in finance receivables and other investing activities. We believe free cash flow is an important indicator of how much cash is generated by our ongoing business operations and we use this as a measure of incremental cash available to invest in our business, meet our debt obligations and return cash to shareowners.

Adjusted Return on Invested Capital

Adjusted ROIC is calculated as the trailing twelve months (“TTM”) of adjusted operating income divided by the average of total debt, non-current pension and postretirement benefit obligations and shareowners’ equity, at the current period end and the corresponding period end of the prior year. Because adjusted ROIC is not a measure defined by GAAP, we calculate it, in part, using non-GAAP financial measures that we believe are most indicative of our ongoing business performance. We consider adjusted ROIC to be a useful measure for evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of our long-term capital investments.

Adjusted Total Debt / Adjusted EBITDA

Adjusted total debt is defined as our long-term debt and finance leases, including current maturities, plus non-current pension and postretirement benefit obligations. Adjusted EBITDA is defined as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization adjusted for the impacts of goodwill and asset impairment charges, transformation and other costs, defined benefit plan gains and losses and other income. We believe the ratio of adjusted total debt to adjusted EBITDA is an important indicator of our financial strength, and is a ratio used by third parties when evaluating the level of our indebtedness.

Types of UPS • There are three types of UPS are available. They are Offline UPS Online UPS Line interactive UPS

Offline UPS • The mains to battery changeover time or battery to mains changeover time in offline UPS is very low as compared to inverter. • Typically, changeover time in inverters is 500 milliseconds & Offline UPS has changeover time of 3-8 milliseconds.

Block diagram of Offline UPS

Offline UPS • In a time, when mains ac is present, Inverter provides the output as is the input mains. • While, Offline UPS has built in Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) to regulate the output voltage close to 220V ac.  • Offline UPSs are normal weight UPSs and are widely used for domestic computers.

Offline UPS circuit

Line Interactive UPS • In this design, the battery to AC power converter (inverter) is always connected to the o/p of the UPS. • Battery charging is done during times when the I/P AC power is normal when the I/P AC fails, transfer switch opens and then the inverter starts functioning to provide power to load immediately.

Block diagram of Line Interactive UPS

Online UPS • In this type of UPS, the system always remains on battery, whether mains ac is present or not. • When mains ac is present, it provides power to DC supply of inverter section as well as charges the battery simultaneously. • When mains ac is not present, it will run the connected load till the battery has a recommended dischargeable level.

Utilise Uninterruptible Power Supply for Various Benefits

Utilise Uninterruptible Power Supply for Various Benefits

An Uninterruptible Power Source is an ideal device to save your computer or other electronic appliances from shutting down when there is a power-cut from the primary source. A UPS is very different from a standby generator or emergency power system as it can provide instant power backup when there is an interruption from the primary source. If your computer does not receive continuous current, then damages and data corruption can occur due to which your electronic device may start malfunctioning. You know that networks are not designed with batteries as laptops do. UPS also can offer huge power back-up to bigger machines in industries or data centres. https://www.nantech.in/

What It Takes to Give a Great Presentation

  • Carmine Gallo

presentation on ups

Five tips to set yourself apart.

Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).

I was sitting across the table from a Silicon Valley CEO who had pioneered a technology that touches many of our lives — the flash memory that stores data on smartphones, digital cameras, and computers. He was a frequent guest on CNBC and had been delivering business presentations for at least 20 years before we met. And yet, the CEO wanted to sharpen his public speaking skills.

Easy and effective PowerPoint tools make it simple to assemble a compelling slideshow. You can choose from creative templates , make animated shorts , or implement video clips via Clipchamp .

However, PowerPoint works the best when you imbue it with a narrative that has the power to captivate. Whether you’re trying to motivate and uplift your audience, offer encouraging advice, or ask them to act or change their perspective, an inspirational presentation carries the same motivational speaking skills as a sales pitch.

Therefore, the key to a successful inspirational presentation is to deliver a clear, impactful message that is both engaging and memorable. Structure your presentation as a narrative, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. To elevate the storytelling qualities of your presentation, introduce a conflict or challenge and describe the journey of overcoming it. While not every topic that you choose to inspire others will involve a conflict, an inspirational presentation will nonetheless conclude with a resolution that leaves your audience inspired.

How to inspire others with your presentational skills

Any good presentation begins with a strong outline . The outline of your presentation should adhere to your goals:

  • To persuade people to share your point of view.
  • To present something new or give a new perspective on something old.
  • To inspire, motivate, and call for action or change.

Keep these goals in mind when you begin outlining. Start your outline with a strong theme that aligns with the message you want to convey. This should be relevant to your audience and your objectives and serve as the backbone of your presentation in guiding the narrative and supporting your message.

Use motivational quotes and visuals

Sprinkle your presentation with quotes from leaders and famous thinkers that align you’re your theme. Pair these quotes with compelling visuals to enhance their impact. Keep in mind that in a presentation that uses visual aids, these quotes are the “icing on the cake” of the message you’re trying to convey; they can serve as powerful reminders of the key points you want your audience to remember.

Share success stories

Incorporating success stories that are related to your topic can convey a sense of success to your audience. Stories of achievable potential can provide examples on how the concepts or strategies you’re sharing can help benefit your audience. This can make otherwise abstract ideas more tangible—and therefore achievable.

Engage your audience

Audience interaction—in the form of quizzes, can make your presentation more memorable. Include questions to ponder, prompt discussions, or incorporate quick activities that reinforce the message. This engagement makes the experience more dynamic and personal for the audience, increasing the impact of your presentation.

Brush up on presentation skills

The key to an inspirational presentation is to balance the use of visual aids and public speaking skills. This can be easier said than done, of course—which is why it’s vital to learn how to practice your presentations , incorporate humor and wit into your speech, or overcome the fear of public speaking that plagues an estimated 73% of the population.

Creating an inspirational presentation requires thoughtful preparation, a balance of visual aids and speaking, as well as a creative approach. By following these guidelines, you can develop a presentation that not only informs but also inspires and motivates your audience.

Victoria Police presentation on youth crime criticised for 'racist' focus on 'African gangs'

The first email landed just after 1:30pm on the final day of May last year.

"I want to provide the feedback that the language, tone, and imagery of the second presentation this morning was very racist," it read.

"I assume formal feedback will be provided to Victoria Police but wanted to flag my concerns."

The internal email from Victoria's justice department was about a recent presentation by police, which had been pitched as a "really impactful" look at the youth gang landscape in Victoria. In the aftermath, attendees complained they should have been warned beforehand they would see "someone get stabbed to death".

Warning: This story contains references to racial slurs.

The presentation followed a three-day conference on gangs which had attracted law enforcement officers from America, England, Italy and New Zealand.

Dozens of public servants from the Department of Justice and some from the premier's department had been invited to take part.

The two-and-a-half-hour session started well, with police staff outlining details of the state's 47 youth gangs and 607 known members and their approach to disrupting them.

But the second half left staff "disturbed", "upset" and "extremely affected", according to more than 200 pages of internal departmental documents obtained by the ABC under Freedom of Information laws.

Police later apologised for the presentation, but denied it was racist.

'Very graphic and violent footage'

The day before the presentation, an email went out warning that Victoria Police had advised there would be "graphic footage that some attendees may find confronting" and that people might want to "excuse themselves" if they found it distressing.

In the aftermath, multiple staff said the warning was insufficient for what was shown.

One staff member said to put it "bluntly", police "should have said, 'We are about to show you someone get stabbed to death.'"

Victoria Police told the ABC its warnings gave people "ample opportunity" to leave the presentation.

Internal emails from the justice department said "explicit videos and even CCTV footage of a murder was shown", along with "very graphic and violent footage" from a "range of serious violent incidents including stabbings and still images involving young people and adults allegedly involved both as victims and perpetrators".

On eight separate occasions in the documents, the word "gratuitous" is used to describe the graphic content shown.

In one person's handwritten notes from the session, they questioned why they were watching a murder. The attendee wrote: "Unclear purpose of showing [this] video is."

Among the audience were people who knew both victims and offenders.

"Some of those in attendance are also members of our vibrant African and South Sudanese Australian communities, including those who personally knew the victims of serious assaults and who were shown video in the presentation of these assaults," one email said.

While several people acknowledged the "traumatic experiences" officers faced, and the need for policy makers to "understand the practical and operational realities" of frontline police work, they didn't think the presentation helped achieve this.

A photo of a police officer wearing a belt around their waste with a gun holstered to their hip.

One person commented they were "disturbed" by "the casual way the violent imagery was discussed" and another said the commentary was "upsetting … flippant, and racist in several points."

It is unclear how many of the attendees complained based on the consolidated feedback provided in the emails, but the secretary of the department described it as "significant staff concerns".

Victoria Police says it received "a combination of both positive and negative feedback" following the presentation.

'Utterance of racial slurs' and a focus on 'African gangs'

It wasn't just the graphic videos and photos that left people "disturbed".

Department emails said the second presentation "focused almost exclusively on offending by African background Australian young people and adults", without "any explanation or evidence as to why".

Attendees contrasted that with the first presentation delivered during the same session, which also referenced Caucasian and Afghan-Australian offenders.

One attendee recalled a slide in the second presentation that featured pictures of two young men of African background handcuffed on the ground.

"The presenter went on to say that one of these men had been found to not be involved in the incident at all," they said. "I question why the image of this person's face was kept in the presentation."

Multiple attendees complained that the presenter referred to a 13-year-old as an "offender for life", laughed "inappropriately" when identifying people in prison, made comments "trivialising family violence", and used the 'n-word'.

The slur was reportedly used by the presenter when reading a social media post that wasn't on the screen, "meaning there was a deliberate decision to use that word which would otherwise not have been seen/heard by the audience," one attendee said.

One staff member's notes of the presentation said, "'n-word'… completely gratuitous" and the photos were "all POC [people of colour], no blurred faces" including one of a "bloody wound to face" and one of someone "in a pool of blood".

Police said, "with hindsight" it accepted that "reading out social media posts from gang members containing certain words may have been offensive to a number of individuals and this was not our intent."

Members of the department's South Sudanese Australian Youth Justice Expert Working Group, who were at the session, said the "utterance of racial slurs" needed to be denounced and that the focus on people of African background should be "called out as racist or, at the very least, noted that it was received as racism by many members of the audience".

The Department of Justice refused a request from the ABC to speak with the chair of the working group.

That the presentation was "solely focused on African gangs" was raised during the session, according to one person who emailed their managers.

"One person posted a question asking whether 'youth gangs is an African young people issue only or was this presentation designed to focus on one group.' This question was not answered," another attendee wrote.

Another person's notes of the session disagreed, they said the presenter acknowledged white gang members, but said "memberships of non-Caucasians is over represented".

A third person said it "bordered on racial profiling" and lamented a lack of awareness "that ethnicity is not the true common denominator".

"We expect that the longer‐term corporate memory of Victoria Police provides ample evidence that the common denominator is poverty, marginalisation, pre‐existing trauma and/or cultural barriers," they wrote. "Accordingly, it is not a surprise that offending may be temporarily elevated amongst ethnic groups associated with recent mass migration trends."

Victoria's Crime Statistics Agency data shows the number of offenders under 24 who were born in Sudan and South Sudan has fallen in the past few years, from 508 in 2020/21 to 258 in 2022/23.

That's compared to the 13,973 youth offenders who were born in Australia.

However, nearly 18 per cent of youth offenders did not have their country of birth recorded, and data on the  ethnic identity of known offenders is not available .

The new chair of the South Sudanese Community Association in Victoria, Andrew Ohide, said he could not comment on the presentation but that it was difficult for young people who were unfairly judged by police or members of the public when they were with a group of friends, saying it was "rubbish" and "not helpful".

"For a community to be safe, we need to look to each other and see all of us as Australian," he said.

He said if people did the wrong thing, he expected police to act, but he worried the public and the media often focused on offenders from an African background.

"When they're [involved in] positive things, you call them Australian, but when they cause any minor problem, now — it's South Sudanese," he said.

Acting chief commissioner apologised to department secretary, documents show

Just after 6pm on the day of the presentation, senior justice department staff were emailed a summary of concerns and complaints regarding the presentation.

One deputy secretary replied that it was "disappointing and shocking".

Another wrote: "It seems a massive backward step by VicPol. A response is clearly warranted."

They emailed staff who had attended, "to acknowledge and apologise for the distress, anger, and disappointment that the presentation has caused" and tell them the material "did not reflect [the department's] values".

A close-up headshot of Victorian police officer Neil Paterson

Two days after the presentation, justice department secretary Kate Houghton and then-acting police chief commissioner Neil Paterson had "a few conversations".

If the secretary stuck to the speaking notes prepared for the call, she raised concerns about gratuitous use of graphic and violent footage, unacceptable language and commentary, racial profiling, and the potential misuse of CCTV footage from correctional facilities.

A follow-up email went out to attendees that afternoon saying: "The Acting Chief Commissioner has apologised and confirmed that action will be taken to address the concerns raised. The Secretary would like to thank you for having the courage to raise that this presentation was not acceptable."

Then-acting chief commissioner Neil Paterson also made an apology to a member of the South Sudanese Australian Youth Justice Expertise Working Group, which one working group member described as "both sincere and assuring".

"He apologised on behalf of the VicPol and asked me to convey his apologies to the team," the group member wrote in an email, adding Mr Paterson "said it was inappropriate to give such a graphic presentation" particularly "to those who might know some of those young [people]".

Victoria Police declined an interview with the ABC, but did respond to a series of questions in a statement.

"While everything presented depicted the realities of the job and the youth gang situation, we understand the content may have been confronting for people who do not work in a policing environment," it said.

A photo of two police officers standing next to each other in high-vis. Their heads are not in the photo.

It said the footage was not "shown to be gratuitous but rather to demonstrate the factual reality" of what "police are confronting on a regular basis".

The statement pushed back against allegations of racism or racial profiling.

"To be clear, there was no racism in the presentation, nor did Victoria Police employees focus on any specific ethnicity or group but rather criminal offending examples."

The Chair of Criminology at the University of Melbourne, Associate Professor Diana Johns said she wasn't surprised to hear about the presentation and the concerns that were raised.

"These are not the everyday things that most of us live with, they're exceptions.

"Yet, the world of policing, very often there's a focus on violence and a normalisation of the things that police see each day, in their working day, that normalises both the violence and the violent response to violence," she said.

She claimed "every city in the world, policing is racialised" and said the community needed to listen to the experiences of young people of colour.

"Police accountability is absolutely critical — police accountability in terms of having independent oversight, in terms of having mechanisms for police to be held accountable when they do the wrong thing, but also to be accountable to their communities they're serving."

Attendees question motivation for presentation

The documents obtained by the ABC suggest some attendees interpreted the presentation as a "scare campaign" attempting to dissuade department staff from supporting a rise in the minimum age of criminal responsibility or bail reforms.

One person was typing notes while the police session was underway.

They started out detailed, but during the second presentation they had largely descended into a serious of questions, including: "What do these phrases mean?", "Rubbish family violence thing?", "Know your audience?", "Bit propaganda-ish?".

The notes finish with one final thought: "What is the purpose of your presooooo"

a photo of a group of police officer's legs in work pants and work boots.

Another attendee said "there was no constructive discussion of what tools/levers police were lacking other than that we shouldn't be making their lives harder by changing bail, raising the age etc".

The invitation to the session was targeted at people working on raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility, which is currently 10, but is set to increase to 12 by the end of the year.

Victoria Police said the presentation was requested by some Justice Department staff who had attended the international gangs conference.

"The purpose was to give employees an insight into the youth gang environment, including some of the challenges police face, impacts on community, and the considerable efforts being made to manage, engage and divert these young people before they escalate into more serious offending," its statement said.

Hunter biden was getting ripped off for crack, expert says — as prosecutors rest their case.

WILMINGTON, Del. — The jurors at  Hunter Biden’s felony gun trial  got a lesson in the ABCs of drug deals Friday, as a DEA agent decoded messages from the first son attempting to score crack cocaine.

Drug Enforcement Administration supervisory special agent Joshua Romig explained at one point  what President Biden’s son meant on May 6, 2018 , when he texted a dealer asking, “Can you get baby powder? The really soft stuff.”

“They are asking for powdered cocaine, not crack cocaine,” said Romig — the last prosecution witness in the trial of Hunter, 54, on charges of of illegally owning a gun while hooked on drugs.

Hunter Biden and Melissa Cohen arrive to court on Friday.

“This is a rudimentary, pretty standard code,” Romig said of that particular request, later adding, “a lot of these messages don’t need interpretation.”

The jury was also shown a July 25, 2018, message to Hunter from someone named Michael saying, “He said 600. Cool??”

Hunter responded: “Ok.”

“$600 for the 10 grams,” Romig translated before commenting. “I think it’s pretty significantly higher than the fair market value.”

On April 18, 2018, Hunter sent another dealer, Clifford O’Brien, a message saying: “If you can be here by 6:45 I can do another 1.4 on topkod [sic] what you owe.”

“He’s asking for another 1.4 grams on top of whatever O’Brien is bringing,” Romig told the jury, adding the amount the first son sought was significantly more than the standard $10 “dime bags” requested by most druggies.

“1.4 grams would be the equivalent of about 14 dime bags of crack cocaine,” he explained.

On April 27, Biden messaged O’Brien again with a photo of a digital scale and chunky white powder on top, saying: “Under any value known to any market in the world what I paid is 60% greater.”

ill Biden arrives at the federal court for the trial of Hunter Biden

“This to me looks like crack but could also be pressed cocaine,” Romig said, adding: “The person who sent that message is clearly upset the amount is less than what they paid for.”

After Romig wrapped up, prosecutors from special counsel David Weiss’ office rested their case against Hunter and the younger Biden’s team called three witnesses before the weekend break.

First, Hunter’s team called Jason Turner, an employee of StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply in Wilmington, where the first son bought the .38-caliber Colt Cobra revolver on Oct. 12, 2018.

Turner was questioned about the forms of identification that Hunter provided the shop as part of the background check they conducted before sending him off with the firearm.

Turner testified that the store accepted Hunter’s passport — an uncommon form of identification for gun purchases — supplemented with the first son’s car registration showing his address.

On the gun application form, Turner recalled, “I wrote ‘car registration,'” under the identification section.

But when he was shown the form, the section was blank, prompting him to say, “Where is it? It’s not there.”

Abbe Lowell

The second defense witness, shop owner Ron Palmiere, testified that he was asked by Turner and another employee to approve the use of Hunter’s passport for the screening, which he did.

“I was trying not to hold up the sale,” Palmiere admitted.

The final witness called Friday was Hunter’s eldest daughter, Naomi Biden, whose testimony about seeing her dad in rehab  brought tears to Hunter’s eyes as he sat in court. .

Naomi recalled that when she saw her father at Los Angeles treatment facility The View in August 2018, he seemed at his healthiest point since the death of Beau Biden, Naomi’s uncle and Hunter’s brother, in 2015.

Hunter came to court Friday accompanied by his wife Melissa Cohen Biden, as has been the case during every day of the trial.

Also in court were at least ten supporters, including first lady Jill Biden, Hunter’s stepmom, and Hunter’s aunt Valerie Biden Owens, the sister of President Biden.

Abbe Lowell, Hunter’s lead defense attorney, hugged Valerie in the courtroom at one point, saying: “You have such an amazing family in so many ways.”

Lowell would not say Friday whether he planned to call additional witnesses Monday. First brother James Biden had previously been identified as a potential defense witness.

Lowell added that the defense will decide over the weekend whether Hunter himself will take the stand.

Calling Hunter poses considerable risks to the defense. Prosecutors would almost certainly ask him under oath whether he smoked crack cocaine around the time he purchased the .38-caliber Colt Cobra revolver at the center of the case on Oct. 12, 2018.

Eleven Days in October

A key undertaking during Lowell’s cross-examining throughout the trial has been to distance prosecution witnesses such as Hunter’s ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, former girlfriend Zoe Kestan, and sister-in-law-turned-lover Hallie Biden from Hunter during the 11-day stretch he possessed the gun.

Hallie Biden

Neither Buhle nor Kestan could recall any significant interactions with Hunter during that time.

When Hallie took the stand, she recounted how Hunter would effectively ghost her for long stretches of time before resurfacing almost out of the blue.

Hallie went to a rehab facility in Pennsylvania on or around Oct. 6, 2018, and Hunter joined her for a session.

But then she didn’t see him in person until either the night of Oct. 22 or the morning of Oct. 23.

Hunter Biden

Hunter and Hallie had exchanged text messages during that stretch. But despite her fuzzy recollection, Lowell made her admit that she wasn’t with him until the very end of that 11-day stretch.

Lowell also got Hallie to admit that she couldn’t remember seeing Hunter smoke crack during that time, despite at least two text exchanges suggesting he was using days after buying the gun.

Hallie also recounted discovering drug paraphernalia in Hunter’s truck, which was parked on her lawn on the morning of Oct. 23, 2018, the same day she found the revolver and threw it away.

Police in Burlington, Vermont apologize to students for mock shooting demonstration

presentation on ups

Police in Burlington, Vermont have apologized to a group of high school students who were shaken up by a role-playing presentation that involved a mock shooting .

The presentation took place Wednesday when about 20 students from Burlington High School's Year End Studies forensics class visited the Burlington Police Department's headquarters for a field trip, according to a statement from Russ Elek, spokesperson for the Burlington School District, to the VTDigger .

The news outlet, citing an email school officials sent parents and families of the students involved, reports that police reenacted a crime and students unexpectedly heard screaming and fake gunshots behind where they were seated.

The purpose of the presentation "was to make a point about how witness statements can be unreliable, and detectives wanted the event to be as realistic as possible," the VTDigger reports, citing an email written by interim principal Sabrina Westdijk and two teachers in attendance.

"First and foremost, the Burlington Police Department apologizes to any students in attendance who were upset by the specific scenario and crime scene portion of the presentation," the department said in a news release Thursday.

'About as real-life as you can get'

The department stated that the role-playing scenario involved "three department personnel simulating a robbery scenario" and was not directed toward any students or faculty. Police also said the district contacted them in April about conducting the presentation after a "previous successful presentation" between the programs in the fall of 2023.

According to Elek, school officials "didn't realize the presentation would happen without warning," a claim the Burlington Police Department disputes, according to the VTDigger.

The Burlington Police Department said it communicated details of the scenarios to the school program's staff in May, including saying that the training incident would involve "using fake firearms in a mock shooting." The department said it told program staff the presentation "is about as real life as you can get, and is certainly exactly the sort of thing we deal with most frequently."

'A reflective growth opportunity'

Police said the program staff responded, "I think these students will be fine with the simulation. We will give a heads up to parents and students."

The police department said in the statement it will meet with students and staff Friday to discuss the presentation and its impact.

"We hope that this can be a reflective growth opportunity for all parties," the department said in the statement.

Paramount Global Town Hall Delayed After Skydance Offer, Co-CEOs’ Shareholder Presentation

By Anthony D'Alessandro , Dade Hayes

Paramount Pictures studios

A town hall for Paramount Global employees originally scheduled to take place Wednesday has been delayed until June 25.

In a note to employees obtained by Deadline, CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins recapped Tuesday morning’s annual shareholder meeting and also noted the rescheduling of the town hall. “Given the ongoing speculation regarding potential M&A, we want to be able to speak to you with as much candor and transparency as possible. By moving the date, our hope is to do just that,” they wrote.

Paramount's Shari Redstone Juggling Skydance, Other Suitors As Deal Saga Continues

Amid skydance offer, paramount global ceo trio trumpet 14 billion dollar brands, plans to explore streaming joint ventures.

The troika outlined a plan to shareholders to cut $500 million in annual overhead and juice streaming revenue through licensing and a potential joint venture or strategic partnership with a media or tech company. While more information can be expected to be conveyed at the town hall later this month, the CEOs also alluded to Paramount’s next quarterly earnings call in August as a moment when the investment community can expect to hear more details.

Paramount stock slipped 4% Tuesday in the wake of the meeting after having run up on Monday amid talk of Skydance being close to sealing a long-sought merger deal. Redstone did not appreciate the fact that Skydance’s revised offer satisfied many Class B (non-voting) shareholders while diminishing her proceeds, according to a report by Reuters. In creating more cash for shareholders, the David Ellison-run suitor decreased the valuation of the deal to $4.75 billion from $5 billion, the report said. (That price tag excludes the roughly $3 billion initial step of acquiring Redstone’s National Amusements, which controls 77% of Paramount’s Class A, or voting, stock.)

Lawmakers to SEC: Don’t give up on climate disclosure rule

By Emma Dumain | 06/06/2024 04:35 PM EDT

Top Democrats want the Wall Street regulator to make it tougher.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts is among dozens of Democrats pushing the Securities and Exchange Commission to strengthen its climate disclosure rule. Jacquelyn Martin/AP

Thirty-eight lawmakers are urging the Securities and Exchange Commission to strengthen climate emissions reporting requirements for publicly traded companies

The message shows progressive anxiety that the agency may not be prepared to push as hard as it can to force executives to disclose their carbon footprints. Its landmark rule on the issue is currently on hold pending litigation.

“While the rule is an important step forward that will provide investors with key information about publicly traded companies’ climate risks and emissions, the rule was significantly weakened in response to intense corporate lobbying over the past two years, in ways that offer too much discretion to corporate managers to decide what information must be disclosed,” the lawmakers say in a June 4 letter to SEC Chair Gary Gensler .

They were referring to the agency’s decision to exclude reporting requirements for “Scope 3 emissions” — those generated through a company’s supply chain.
