Weather Presentation

By Mr. Rojas

California 5 th Grade State Standard Coveredin this “Weather” PowerPoint

Students Know:

  • 4.e → the Earth's atmosphere exerts a pressure that decreases with distance above Earth's surface and that at any point it exerts this pressure equally in all directions.
  • 4.a → uneven heating of Earth causes air movements (convection currents).
  • 4.b → the influence that the ocean has on the weather and the role that the water cycle plays in weather patterns.

Earth’s Atmosphere

  • The thin blanket of air that surrounds Earth is called the atmosphere . We couldn't exist without it!

Layers of the Atmosphere ( TMSTE )

  • T hermosphere – the hot, outermost layer of the atmosphere.
  • M esosphere - the coldest layer of the atmosphere.
  • S tratosphere – Some planes fly here. It contains most of the atmosphere’s ozone. Temperatures here increase with height.
  • T roposphere – (the closest one to Earth) We live in it and breath its air. Almost all weather happens here. Here, air temperature decreases as you go higher.

Earth’s atmosphere is divided into four layers based on changes of temperature:

Earth’s Atmosphere Protects Life in 4 Key Ways

1) Helps trap H EAT energy absorbed from the sun which helps maintain the temperature range that is suitable for life (it keeps Earth’s temperature from being too hot or too cold)

2) Helps retain G ASES that most living organisms need for life (like oxygen and nitrogen).

3) Shields E ARTH from dangerous levels of ultraviolet rays (thanks to the ozone layer).

4) Reduces most M ETEORS to dust and gas before they reach Earth’s surface .

Mnemonic Device: Holy GEM !

Properties of Air

Air has three properties ( W i SP of air ):

  • i t has W eight
  • i t takes up S pace
  • i t exerts P ressure

Properties of Cold & Warm Air

  • Denser (it’s heavier because air particles are closer together)
  • Sinks (because it is heavier)
  • Can Hold Less Humidity (than warm air)
  • A Mass of Cold Air = High-Pressure Area
  • Less dense (lighter)
  • Rises (because it is lighter)
  • Can Hold More Humidity (than cold air)
  • A Mass of Warm Air = Low-Pressure Area

Air Pressure

  • The atmosphere can be thought of as an ocean of air that surrounds Earth.
  • Because air has weight and takes up space, it exerts a force equally in all directions - sideways, as well as up and down. This is because gas molecules are constantly moving in all directions.
  • Air presses down because the force of gravity is pulling it downward. Because of this, air pressure can be measured.
  • Air pressure is the force exerted by air on a given area, at any given time.
  • Air pressure changes as you go higher.

Air Pressure (cont.)

  • Take a column of air that is 1 meter by 1 meter, starts at Earth’s surface and goes all the way up to the top of the atmosphere.
  • Air pressure is highest when it is closest to Earth’s surface (air particles are closer together) and decreases with height or altitude (air particles are farther apart).
  • For example, on top of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth, air pressure is less than 1/3 what it is at sea level. The air there is so thin (the air molecules are so spread apart) you would need a gas tank to make it to the summit.

4 Factors that Cause Air Pressure to Change

  • Temperature – when air is warmed, air particles spread out and air pressure decreases. When air is cooled, air particles come together more tightly so air pressure increases.
  • Humidity – Humidity is the amount of water in the air. When humidity increases, it causes air pressure to decrease.
  • Altitude – Altitude is the height above Earth surface. Air pressure decreases the higher you go.
  • Density – Air pressure increases the more you squeeze it into a smaller space.

What Happens to the Sun’s Energy When it Reaches the Earth?

The Uneven Heating of Earth

Over Large Parts of Earth

  • Because Earth is a sphere, has a tilted axis (23.5%) and revolves around the Sun, the sun’s rays strike different parts of Earth’s surface at different angles (and these areas vary throughout the year).
  • Some places get more direct and concentrated sun’s rays. In other places, the sun’s heat energy is more spread over a wide area.
  • Different materials heat up and cool down at different rates.
  • Oceans heat up and cool down more slowly than land.
  • Concrete and pavement tend to make cities warmer than rural areas, where there is more open land/soil.

How is Wind Created?

  • The sun is the source of energy that powers all weather.
  • The sun heats Earth unevenly both locally and over large parts of the Earth. this causes the air in some places to be warmer or cooler than in other places.
  • Air pressure is affected by air temperature. Cooler air is heavier (denser) than warmer air (lighter, less dense) .
  • These differences in air pressure lead to the creation of wind , as air will naturally move from areas of higher pressure (cooler) to areas of lower pressure (warmer) . In other words, warmer air will rise and cooler air will move to take its place, leading to wind.

over Earth’s

The Earth’s

temperatures

take its place

What Causes Local Wind?

  • Local winds are caused by 1) the uneven heating of Earth surface in local places/areas . 2) t hey also depend on local changes in temperature (and air pressure) .
  • Winds blow from areas of cooler air to areas of warmer air (from high to low pressure areas).
  • “Land breeze” and “sea breeze” are two examples of local winds.

Warm air rises 

Cool air sinks 

Cooler air temperatures high up in the sky help the rising warm air to cool off

Wind Affected by Altitude & Friction

  • Wind speed and direction often changes with altitude.
  • Winds tend to blow faster at higher altitudes than near the surface. That’s because winds are slowed down by trees, mountains, buildings, and other features on Earth’s surface (friction).
  • Winds also blow faster over smooth oceans than over hilly landscapes .

Prevailing Winds or Global Winds

  • Prevailing Winds are global winds that almost always blow from the same direction. They are also known as trade winds.
  • In the United States, the prevailing winds blow from west to the east.
  • Two Factors that Cause Prevailing Winds are 1) Earth’s Rotation 2) Uneven Heating over large parts of Earth
  • An air mass is a large body of air that has temperature and moisture similar to that of the area (land or water) over which it formed. Air masses can cover thousands of kilometers. They form over continents and over oceans.
  • Generally, the kind of weather you may have at any time is the direct result of the air mass that is passing through your local area.
  • Moist air masses form over water. These type of air masses have a lot more humidity than those over land. Air masses that form over land are generally dry. Air masses that form near Earth’s poles are cold. Air masses that form in the tropics, or areas near the equator, are warm.
  • Air masses move because prevailing winds (global winds) or jet streams push them along. Most air masses move from west to east over North America

4 Types of Air Masses over North America

  • Continental Polar – Very little water will evaporate from the land and ice near the poles, so this air mass will be very cold and fairly dry.
  • Continental Tropical – air masses near the tropics will be warm because the sun shines more directly there. It will also be dry because it is over land.
  • Maritime Polar – The oceans over the poles are cold but they still will have water evaporate into the air. This air mass is therefore cold and relatively moist (humid).
  • Maritime Tropical – An air mass over the water in the tropics will be warm and will also have lots of humidity because it can evaporate easily here.
  • When two air masses meet, they usually don’t mix but form a front (this happens at the edges or boundary where they meet).
  • Fronts are the areas where most weather happens. This is due to having two air masses with different temperature and humidity levels meet.
  • A front gets its name from the temperature of the air that is moving into the area (cold front or warm front).
  • When a front does not move very much or it moves back and forth, it is called a stationary front. A stationary front can stay in one place for several days.

In both instances, warm air rise because it is lighter. Because warm air holds more humidity than cold air, when warm air rises the water vapor in it condenses to make clouds. If it rises quickly (like what happens in a cold front) the clouds it makes are bigger, with heavier liquid drops. That is why thunderstorms often occur along cold fronts

In a warm front, warm air rises gradually

In a cold front, warm air is force up quickly

Four Weather Conditions that Will Change When a Front Approaches and Passes Over an Area

1) Temperature

2) Humidity (Moisture)

3) Air Pressure

4) W ind D irection & Speed

Weather Maps

  • A weather map is a map that shows weather conditions over an area, at a given time.
  • They are useful for predicting how the weather will change. By reading the station models on both sides of a front (in a weather map), meteorologists can predict what the air masses will do next.
  • In a weather map, warm fronts are show with red half circles & cold fronts are shown with blue triangles . The circles and triangles point in the direction the fronts are moving.

Where does the data used in w eather Maps come from?

They come from: 1) weather stations across the country, 2) Doppler radar ,

3) weather balloons , 4) satellites , and 5) buoys in the ocean

Weather Station

Weather Satellite

Doppler Radar

Weather Balloon

Two Types of Pressure Systems

  • High Pressure System = cool and dry air that brings dry, clear, fair weather
  • Low-Pressure System = warm and humid air that brings warm, stormy weather

Florida Panthers celebrate Stanley Cup Final win at multiple stops, including Elbo Room, in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - After the Florida Panthers won their first Stanley Cup Final Monday night, fans took to the streets throughout South Florida to celebrate. Those celebrations continued onto the next day at a Fort Lauderdale venue, where Panthers players were seen hoisting the Stanley Cup.

7Skyforce hovered over the Elbo Room Beach Bar, located at 241 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, Tuesday morning, where a large crowd gathered around the venue.

Several fans were seen outside the venue as they attempted to get a glimpse of the Stanley Cup.

Players were seen on the second floor of the Elbo Room, kissing the Stanley Cup and throwing beer bombs as they led the crowd in “Let’s Go Panthers” chants.

Following the big win, players remained in the arena until 3 a.m and then they partied at Tkachuk’s home. They then made their way to the Elbo Room.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue passed by the Elbo Room to give the players a shoutout.

Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk was at Elbo Room.

“Yeah, we’ve been going pretty good all night, it’s been a good party so far. We earned it,” Tkachuk said. “Guys are having a great time. Anytime the cup’s around, it’s incredible. Definitely makes it a lot of fun. Every time you touch it, look at it, able to hoist it, it’s something special.”

Elbo Room was closed off to fans but many still gathered outside.

“I just got a beer shower. I didn’t even shower this morning. My shower is out of the Stanley Cup right there,” said Luke Scala.

“I mean, it can’t get any better than that,” said John Shapiro.

“It’s just so happy. We won for the first time and it’s good that we experienced it,” said a young fan.

Fans watched as the players began singing “We Are The Champions” atop the Elbo Room.

“It’s awesome. I’m experiencing this with my two daughters. Big hockey fans. It’s great for the community, great for South Florida,” said Oscar Marrero.

“It’s incredible. It’s awesome. I’m so proud of them, and it was so awesome watching them the whole time and they did it!” said Madison Woodruff.

“I have been a fan since day one, Miami Arena, couldn’t be happier right now. This is an awesome scene right here and champions of the world,” said Carey Laufer.

After the celebrations on top of the Elbo Room, the Stanley Cup was on the move as Aleksander Barkov took the cup to the beach. Fans followed and recorded as Tkachuk took the cup for a swim.

Following the Elbo Room celebration and the dip in the beach, some players were seen eating lunch at Moxies in Fort Lauderdale. Others took the Stanley Cup to Cafe Europa and Ann’s Florist and Coffee Bar.

“All the panthers just came with the Stanley Cup. We had a beer with them and drank out of the Stanley Cup,” said Ethan, a fan.

The Panthers’ championship parade is set for Sunday in Fort Lauderdale.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Fans are invited to join the festivities along the parade route, which begins at A1A and Riomar Street.

A new disaster assistance organization helping Claremore residents after tornado damage

by CJ Maclin

Claremore home destroyed (KTUL)

CLAREMORE, OKLA. (KTUL) — A new organization is helping Claremore residents in the wake of the tornado that struck their town three weeks ago.

It's called the Claremore and Rogers County disaster assistance.

When NewsChannel 8 arrived at the interview, there was an older gentleman outside putting the pieces of his home back together with a sling on.

This organization explained its process to him and assisted him without any hesitation.

  • SEE ALSO: Cleanup and recovery ramp up in Claremore after devastating weekend tornado

The same thing they are doing for the City of Claremore.

“For us specifically, me and my wife, we lost our camper. Everything was completely destroyed. Gone. There wasn’t anything left but the toilet and the frame. And both of our vehicles were also totaled,” said Andrew Klauditz, a Claremore resident affected by the tornado.

Andrew is just one of many Claremore residents who have been helped by the Rogers County Disaster Assistance Organization after the Memorial Day tornado.

Residents are continuing to pick up the pieces from what's left of their homes three weeks later.

Some lost their homes in this disaster and others are trying to hold the city of Claremore together.

One of those organizations is CRCDA who are providing shelter for people after they received a generous amount of aid from one local bank.

“I only see the need in helping out a fellow citizen and getting back to their normalcy that they rightfully deserve. No one asked for a tornado to come and rip apart their life. They didn’t do anything to cause it, but we can do something to fix it. And we need the donations and funds to help that,” said team member of Claremore & Rogers disaster assistance, Kacey Alchammat.

Andrew said that this organization helped his family find a new place to live on a campsite and they didn’t charge his family a dime.

“It was a relief. That’s something a lot of people have been asking me. You must be ecstatic, you must be excited? No, I can breathe. That’s the most important part for me at least. Is that now I can breathe.”

This organization started two days after the tornado struck Claremore.

They set a goal of $500,000.

  • SEE ALSO: "Thankful to be alive" - Claremore residents after tornado

Right now, they’ve reached 20% of that goal while receiving nearly 400 applications.

The funds they receive are donor funds.

On Friday, they will be presenting checks to households to start the re-building process.

“It’s a blessing to help anyone in need. When you come out here and you just see the depravity and destruction of what’s happened; and the way that people are having to live currently, said Alchammat. They're living with water leaking in their roof, people needing medical attention that can’t afford it can’t provide it.”

Lawsuit: Lone Tree pickleball courts causing ‘unbearable conditions’

by: Heather Willard

Posted: Jun 28, 2024 / 06:31 PM MDT

Updated: Jun 29, 2024 / 09:34 AM MDT

DENVER (KDVR) — The city of Lone Tree is being sued for the noise created by pickleball players at its recreational center courts, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in Douglas County.

The suit, brought by five Lone Tree residents, alleges that the noise has exceeded “all reasonable standards” and is depriving them of “quiet enjoyment of their homes and outdoor spaces.” The lawsuit also alleges that the city is refusing to close the courts.

“Meanwhile, the nuisance level noise rages on daily with the pickleball striking the paddles every two seconds up to thirteen plus hours a day,” the suit states. The group is alleging that they’ve demanded the courts be closed for the past seven months.

Pickleball, a sport inspired by badminton and tennis, started gaining popularity in recent years and is beloved by its players. Last year, groups fought over pickleball courts at Congress Park in Denver and in Centennial , but courts have continued popping up around the metro area.

According to South Suburban Parks and Recreation, which includes the Lone Tree Recreation Center, the facility includes six outdoor pickleball courts that are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. The facility also offers nighttime lighting, lengthening playtime for pickleballers.

According to the lawsuit, neighbors of the Lone Tree pickleball courts conducted a sound study to see how loud the game would get. The group said the noise level data is “undeniable,” and the courts created noise exceeding permissible noise levels by 10-15 decibels.

The lawsuit says that the average noise level of pickleball strikes is 62.1 decibels, while the state’s noise abatement statute dictates a daytime noise level of 50 decibels and a nighttime noise level of 45 decibels.

Lawsuit: Pickleball noise ‘unreasonable’ under city code

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends a noise exposure limit of 85 decibels averaged over an eight-hour day to prevent hearing loss, and says this is about the level where a raised voice is needed to hold a conversation. The agency also notes that equipment that can produce noise levels over 85 decibels include lawnmowers, vacuums and power tools.

However, the group is arguing that the pickleball courts’ noise is “an unreasonable noise” based on city code, which defines it as “any sound which annoys or disturbs a reasonable person of normal sensitivities; or endangers or injures the safety or health of humans or animals; or endangers or injures personal or real property; and is the subject of a complaint made by any person.”

Two of the residents who brought the lawsuit argue in the complaint that they purchased a home in the area for “the sunset views from their patio” but cannot use it because of the “untenable noise” from the courts. They also allege that they tried to fix the issue by “installing a fountain and speakers on their deck, even at times wearing headsets while outside.”

“None of these methods worked,” the lawsuit continued. “The noise from the Courts is so intrusive that (the couple) can hear it while inside of their home.” One of the other residents who filed the lawsuit said the noise has affected his ability to work from home.

Ultimately, the group is seeking for the pickleball courts to be shut down, for Lone Tree to be unable to reopen the courts unless they’re enclosed in a soundproof structure and to repay the group’s legal fees.

FOX31 has reached out to the plaintiffs and the city of Lone Tree about this case. The city told FOX31 that it does not comment on pending litigation.

Record cold, flooding and tornadoes: 2023 was a wild weather year in Southern New England

Arctic cold, tornadoes, flooding: national weather service reviews 2023's big events.

The year 2023 brought a brief period of record cold, flooding, a soggy summer and tornadoes to Southern New England.

The National Weather Service captures the weather highlights (or maybe they should be called lowlights) in a website presentation that includes photographs of storm damage, radar images, graphics and explanatory text.

"Join us for a look back on some of the memorable weather events to impact Southern New England in 2023," the weather service says about its Weather Year in Review.

Below are a few highlights from the weather service's highlights. The full presentation can be found on the weather service's website: tinyurl.com/NWSNewEngland.

More: Rhode Island rivers kept rising after Monday's storm, leaving roads and businesses flooded

An arctic blast disrupts a mild winter

The winter of 2022-2023 was warmer than normal, but the region was hit with a brief arctic blast in early February that set two daily records .

On Friday, Feb. 3, the temperature dropped to 4 below zero, breaking the record of 3 below set in 1955. It got even colder the next day, with the temperature dropping to 9 below on Feb. 4, breaking the record of 2 below set in 1918.

"Arctic sea smoke was visible on many bodies of water, including Vineyard Haven Harbor and Boston Harbor," the weather service said, with photographs showing the phenomenon. "It forms due to the temperature difference between the Arctic airmass and milder water."

The weather presentation includes an image from computer models that helped meteorologists "determine that the airmass originated near the Arctic Circle."

Summer bummer for beach lovers

The summer wasn't kind to beach lovers, especially during July, which was the second-rainiest July on record for the Providence area .

"An active weather pattern in mid to late July resulted in several flash flood and severe weather events in Southern New England," the weather service said.

The Providence area had 8.37 inches of rain in July , second only to July 2009, which had 10.52 inches. For Hartford, it was the rainiest July on record, 13.93 inches, while Worcester and Boston had their second-rainiest Julys.

Tornadoes hit Southern New England

Some of the July storms produced tornadoes, as did storms in August. On Aug. 18, five tornadoes touched down in Southern New England, including an EF-2 tornado with wind speeds of 115 mph. It had a "discontinuous" track of more than 9 miles, touching down in Scituate and crossing into Johnston and North Providence, according to the weather service. One person was injured.

On Sept. 13, three more tornadoes hit Rhode Island , in Foster, Glocester and Lincoln.

Hurricane Lee bypasses region

For a while in September, it also looked like Hurricane Lee might hit Southern New England, but it passed well offshore, mostly kicking up waves for surfers .

Still, Southern New England had strong winds and some damage.

The review was published on Dec. 11, before the storm that brought heavy rain and flooding to much of Rhode Island this month.

The duck boats are rallying! Follow the live coverage from the Celtics parade today

presentation about the weather

The celebration of the Boston Celtics' NBA championship will be in full swing today, Friday, June 21, as over a million Boston sports fans ― who are no strangers to the iconic rolling rallies and duck boat parades that celebrated multiple championship titles in the past two decades ― are expected to flock to the city once again.

The parade will celebrate the Celtics' blowout   106-88 victory  over the  Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA title in five games. The win marks the team's 18th title, breaking a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers and setting a new record.

Celtics Parade wraps up

presentation about the weather

Commentators are estimating well over one million people showed up for the parade, which wrapped up just ahead of 12:30.

While the crowd was huge, people were commenting on how well behaved it was. Laura Cunning, of South Boston, said the crowd was energetic but got along very well.

"It was great, a great presentation of our city and our champions," Cunning said.

The crowd was electric as Coach Joe Mazzulla, Kristaps Porzingis and MVP Jayson Tatum made their way through Boylston Street on their duck boats. Chants of "MVP" echoes through neighborhood as attendees raved against the steel barricades as their champions passed by.

The Celtics parade has begun!

The Duck Boats have begun rolling in Boston, displaying the championship trophy to more than 1 million onlookers. While original crowd estimates said about a million people were likely to be in attendance, people at the scene are estimating the crowd is larger.

Mufaro Mutuswa of Billerica said she was excited for the parade to come through.

"Right now, it's very hot but I wouldn't trade it for anything," Mutuswa said

Mutuswa also said she is a Celtics fan because of her Boston pride, and because she likes winning.

"I like to be a part of this," Mutuswa said. "This is absolutely amazing, it's always worth it in the end."

What's the 'Don't stop disbelieving' slogan on Jayson Tatum's shirt?

The slogan refers to how many sports pundits doubted Tatum's ability to lead the team to a championship during the past year. The t-shirt is a symbol that Tatum has apparently embraced those who don't believe in him.

Officials celebrate the Celtics

Ahead of the parade stepping off, state leaders thanked the Celtics team for the pride they brought to Boston.

"We are in love with this team because it is a team. And they had given us so much, " Governor Maura Healey, who was a professional basketball player, said. "And here's the thing about basketball, the team game, everybody's gotta roll, everybody's got a part. Some nights it was different person stepping up, but they got it done as a team."

As great as they are on the court, she said they are even better off the court.

She told people to "show love and appreciation not just for the trophy, but for what they give to community, to the state, to the region. They are role models. They are leaders. And today we're going to party and celebrate the Boston Celtics," she said.

Celtics players do Q&A before parade starts

Before heading out on the Duck Boats, members of the Boston Celtics gathered at TD Garden for a Q&A forum, hosted by former Celtic and current broadcaster Brian Scalabrine.

Players had the chance to comment on winning the championship.

"These guys were ready for that moment," said center Al Horford. "I'm happy we were able to get it done."

"I'm glad on this side now, " added guard Jrue Holliday. He noted when he first arrived to the team this year, he "knew that we had something special."

Guard Derrick White commented, "We didn't want to skip any steps...we knew what the end goal was."

Center Kristaps Porzingis said he was upset that he got hurt before being able to help the team wrap up the championship series.

"It was heartbreaking for me," he said. "We took care of business."

"Whatever it took for us to win, that's what we were willing to do," Shooting guard Jalen Brown added.

"It starts from the top down," said forward Jayson Tatum, on how the players function on the court, citing Horford as his prime example of inspiration.

How many championship parades have used the duck boats?

The duck boats have been used for championship parades in Boston since 2002. The  Boston Duck Boat website  states, "Boston Duck Tours, over the years, has had the honor and pleasure of hosting four of Boston’s sports teams in Rolling Rally Championship parades 12 different times."

According to the website, with duck boats "players could stand on, and wave to the crowds below. It was close enough to get these players right up to their fans. But, also far enough to keep them from being mobbed by the crowds."
