The Doctorate Programme in Design and Communication supports the qualitative growth of high-level academic research in the fields of design and communication.

In relation to design specifically, an emerging field from an academic perspective, it aims to encourage the creation of rigorous high-quality doctoral theses based on design projects. This will culminate in the promotion of research and experimentation within this field.

Furthermore, the strong links that have been established between design and other knowledge spheres, above all with the field of communication, also represent an opportunity to enrich all facets of this research, not only those of a technological or industrial nature, but also by exploring the philosophical, social, political, cultural and artistic dimensions.

This doctorate programme aims to academically enhance studies in design and communication, thus completing an academic framework in these disciplines, alongside related undergraduate and master’s degrees. This doctorate programme facilitates the completion of third-cycle studies in design and communication, contributing to the creation of a research community and new knowledge on these subjects while providing the opportunity to consolidate research on methodologies in the design and communication fields.

The doctorate programme is structured according to two lines of research:

• Communication and its environments. Corporations and Institutions; media, networks and territory

To accomplish the objectives of the programme and to ensure the multidisciplinary approach desired for doctoral theses, this doctorate programme boasts participation from researchers from the Business and Communication Faculty of UVic-UCC and BAU School of Design, who are members of the following research groups:

All doctoral students enrolled in the doctorate programme will be integrated into a research group, therefore they can use the general spaces and workshops that are available at the Faculty of Business and Communication and those of BAU College of Arts & Design, the centre partnering with UVic-UCC. They can also make use of the spaces specific to the research group, which encourages interaction between doctoral students and other members of the group or the director. Due to the nature of the studies included in the programme which relate to the field of design and communication, the workshops, studios and laboratories as well as the technical and artistic equipment available at the two centres, in addition to the library services, will be at the disposal of doctoral students and researchers.

The dates for the period of enrolment in the course are:

• Pre-registration: from June 25th to the July 9th of 2024
• Admission: from September 2nd to 13th of 2024

Although PhD candidates are usually more in favor of undertaking their doctoral studies on campus, some universities offer online PhD in Spain. Usually, online PhD degrees in Spain are offered by private or international higher education institutions. Public universities in Spain generally only offer in-person doctoral degrees. It will be easier for you to find an in-person accredited PhD program in Spain than an online PhD program. 

How Much Does a PhD Program Cost in Spain?

Tuition fees in Spain are set on a pay-per-credit basis, which means the number of ECTS credits a program has is multiplied by the cost of one credit. The cost per credit for PhD programs can go up to €55 (or lower). 

PhD programs in Spain are divided into two stages, and it is only during the first phase (first year) that students have to undertake credit courses (60 ECTS). The second phase (the subsequent years of the PhD program) focuses on research and writing the thesis. 

This means the cost of PhD in Spain, for the first year only, can go up to €3,300 (or lower). The other academic years students spend researching and writing their thesis are way cheaper because you only have to pay for supervision, continual assessment, and additional administrative costs. The Autonomous University of Barcelona, for example, only charges around €550 per year for supervision, assessment, administrative fees, and other specific services.

Generally, the cost of PhD in Spain depends on factors like university, research discipline, and the student’s country of residence. Usually, non-EU/EEA students pay higher fees compared to national or EU/EEA students. 

PhD Scholarships in Spain for International Students

It is possible to undertake a funded PhD in Spain. Many prospective PhD candidates apply for PhD scholarships in Spain, and there are even options for international students. PhD scholarships in Spain are offered by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Professional Training. Individual Spanish universities also offer grants and financial aid for doctoral programs. Can I Get a PhD in Spain in English?

Obtaining an English PhD in Spain is possible but not as common as Spanish-taught PhD programs. Some universities offer programs that are bilingual or even multilingual. On the other hand, the PhD program in Information and Communication Technologies at the same university is taught entirely in English. 

How Long is a PhD Program in Spain?

The duration of a PhD program in Spain is approximately three years of full-time study. Some may extend their PhD studies in Spain for two more years if initially approved by the Academic Commission of the university. Part-time PhD programs usually take around five years to complete. 

PhD Structure in Spain

A PhD program in Spain is divided into the first cycle, which comprises training courses, and the second cycle, which focuses on research and writing towards a dissertation. During a PhD program, candidates must attend training sessions, seminars, and a wide range of other academic activities. 

Supervision 

PhD candidates have two mentors that help them throughout the doctoral program: 

• Mentor: A PhD holder responsible for monitoring the interaction between the candidate and the Academic Commission. 
• Thesis Director: A PhD holder (may or may not be the same person as the mentor) who must have accredited research experience. The thesis director is responsible for planning training activities for the candidate and overseeing thesis matters.
• Thesis Co-Director (When Applicable) : When the thesis has a multidisciplinary nature. 

Admission Requirements

In order to gain admission in PhD programs in Spain, prospective students must have a bachelor’s and a master’s degree relevant to the PhD field of research (300 ECTS credits in total). Universities also accept students with equivalent degrees for as long as they correspond to a total of 300 ECTS credits. Individual universities have the right to add additional selection/admission criteria for specific doctoral programs in Spain. 

How to Apply 

The application for PhD in Spain should be made directly to the university, doctoral college, or university institute of your choice. Prospective PhD candidates in Spain must usually submit a research proposal, CV, reference, etc. As part of the admission process, students must also attend an interview.

You may have to submit the following documents.

• Passport-sized recent photographs.
• Curriculum vitae (CV).

Legislation

Doctoral studies at UPC are regulated by Royal Decree 99/2011 , which aims to organize doctoral studies (third cycle of official university education). They are part of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) .

From large labs to small teams, mentorship thrives

Each year, new MIT graduate students are tasked with the momentous decision of choosing a research group that will serve as their home for the next several years. Among many questions they face: join an established research effort, or work with a new faculty member in a growing group?

Professors Cynthia Breazeal, leading a group of over 30 students, and Ming Guo, with a lab of fewer than 10, demonstrate that excellent mentorship can thrive in a research group of any size.

Cynthia Breazeal: Flexible leadership

Cynthia Breazeal is a professor of media arts and sciences at MIT, where she founded and directs the Personal Robots group at the MIT Media Lab. She is also the MIT dean for digital learning, leading MIT Open Learning’s business and research and engagement units. Breazeal is a pioneer of social robotics and human-robot interaction, and her research group investigates social robots applied to education, pediatrics, health and wellness, and aging.

Breazeal’s focus on taking multidisciplinary approaches to her research has resulted in an inclusive and supportive lab environment. Moreover, she does not shy away from taking students with unconventional backgrounds.

One nominator joined Breazeal's lab as a design researcher without a computer science background. However, Breazeal recognized the value of their work within the context of her lab’s research directions. “I was a bit of an oddball in the group”, the nominator modestly recounts, “but had joined to help make the work in the group more human-centered.”

Throughout the student's academic journey, Breazeal offered unwavering support, whether by connecting them with experts to solve specific problems or guiding them through the academic job search process.

Over the Covid-19 pandemic, Breazeal prioritized gathering student feedback through a survey about how she could best support her research group. In response to this input, Breazeal established the Senior Research Team (SRT) within her group.

The SRT includes PhD holders such as postdocs and research scientists who provide personalized mentorship to one or two graduate students per semester. The SRT members serve as dedicated advocates and points of contact, with weekly check-ins to address questions within the lab. Additionally, SRT members meet by themselves weekly to discuss student concerns and bring up urgent issues with Breazeal directly. Lastly, students can sign up for meetings with Breazeal and participate in paper review sessions with her and co-authors.

In the nominator’s opinion, this new system was implemented because Breazeal cares about her students and her lab culture. With over 30 members in her group, Breazeal cannot provide hands-on support for everyone daily, but she still deeply cares about each person's experience in the lab. The nominator shared that Breazeal “understands as she progresses in her career, she needs to make sure that she is changing and creating new systems for her research group to continue to operate smoothly.”

Ming Guo: Emphasizing learning over achievement

Ming Guo is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Guo’s group works at the interface of mechanics, physics, and cell biology, seeking to understand how physical properties and biological function affect each other in cellular systems.

A key aspect of Guo’s mentorship style is his ability to foster an environment where students feel comfortable expressing their difficulties. He actively shows empathy for his students’ lives outside of the lab, often reaching out to provide support during challenging times. When one nominator found themselves faced with significant personal difficulties, Guo made a point to check in regularly, ensuring the student had a support network of friends and labmates.

Guo champions his students both academically and personally. For instance, when a collaborating lab placed unrealistic expectations on a student’s experimental output, Guo openly praised the student’s efforts and achievements in a joint meeting, alleviating pressure and highlighting the student’s hard work.

In addition, Guo encourages vulnerable conversations about issues affecting students, such as political developments and racial inequities. During the graduate student unionization process, he fostered open discussion, showing genuine interest in understanding the challenges faced by graduate students and using these insights to better support them.

In Guo’s research group, learning and development are prioritized over achievements and goals. When students encounter challenges in their research, Guo helps them maintain perspective by validating their struggles and recognizing the skills they acquire through difficult experiments. By celebrating their progress and emphasizing the importance of the learning process, he ensures that students understand the value of their experiences beyond outcomes. This approach not only boosts their confidence, but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the scientific process and their own development as researchers.

Guo says that he feels most energized and happy when he talks to students. He looks forward to the new ideas that they present. One nominator commented on how much Guo enjoys giving feedback at group meetings: “Sometimes he isn’t convinced in the beginning, but he has cultivated our lab atmosphere to be conducive to extended discussion.”

The nominator continues, “When things do work and become really interesting, he is extremely excited with us and pushes us to share our own ideas with the wider research community.”

A professor and two doctoral candidates at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences have received Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program awards for the 2024–25 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Jessica Marglin , professor of religion, law and history, and PhD students Jordan Chancellor and Katie Googe are among more than 800 scholars who will teach and conduct research abroad, as well as expand their networks of professional colleagues, through the program.

Fulbright scholarship supports Mediterranean history project

Marglin, who holds the Ruth Ziegler Chair in Jewish Studies , will use her award to support research in France for her book project The Extraterritorial Mediterranean: Sovereignty and Jurisdiction in the Nineteenth-Century. She’ll be affiliated with the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris.

Marglin’s scholarship focuses on the history of Jews in North Africa and the Mediterranean and of non-Muslims in the Islamic world, with a particular emphasis on law. Her 2022 book The Shamama Case explores the decades-long legal battles that embroiled the estate of Nassim Shamam, a wealthy Tunisian Jew who died in Italy in 1873.

Her new book will explore “extraterritoriality,” a legal status under which non-native individuals can claim exemption from local laws. It’s similar to the modern concept of diplomatic immunity, says Marglin.

Extraterritoriality is largely extinct today, but in the 19th century, she says, all foreigners in the Ottoman Empire or Morocco benefited from this law: “From the end of the Napoleonic wars to the first world war, extraterritoriality provided the legal glue that bound together huge numbers of people on the move across the Middle Sea.”

This is Marglin’s second experience with the Fulbright program. From 2006 to 2007, a Fulbright fellowship funded her study at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She has also received a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship and the Rome Prize.

Fulbright scholar in Spain’s Canary Islands

Doctoral candidate Jordan Chancellor will teach marine sciences in the Canary Islands, off the coast of northwestern Africa.

Chancellor, who hails from Ramsey, Minn., will also work on a commercial seabream breeding program, a natural extension of her PhD research under USC Dornsife’s Andrew Gracey , associate professor of biological sciences. She studies population genomics in commercial aquaculture species at the Nuzhdin Aquaculture Lab , focusing on selective breeding to build climate change resilience.

“My PhD research utilizes a variety of molecular approaches in order to better understand the adaptation and domestication of commercial shellfish species to ocean acidification,” she says.

Chancellor says her long-term goals include continuing her research in the blue economy and aquaculture industry and developing sustainable strategies, products and systems that support food security as the climate changes.

Fulbrighter will teach sci-fi in the Czech Republic

Originally from Athens, Georgia, Katie Googe came to USC Dornsife to study the relationship between speculative fiction and understandings of history and time in writings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

She says her PhD in English , which will be conferred in August, focuses on “American speculative fiction authors from the 1880s to the 1930s who reimagined history as a way to condemn racism and imperialism.”

She’ll carry her interest in science fiction, the legacies of colonialism, gender and sexuality, and the connections between literature and film and television to Masaryk University in the Czech Republic, where she’ll teach classes exploring 19th- and 20th-century science fiction’s take on time and imperialism.

Googe says she’ll also research the ways in which both Czech and American speculative fiction authors in the period between World Wars I and II understood the idea of empire. She says the period is particularly interesting because “Czechoslovakia had just achieved independence, while the United States was at the height of its imperial reach.”

As she looks forward to meeting new students and colleagues from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, she says, “I have always found that discussing my work with others gives me valuable insight into concepts I take for granted, and I am excited to spend a year immersed in the perspective of an American studies department outside of the U.S.”

In the long term, she aims to remain in academia, teaching and conducting research on American literature and its international connections.

Fulbright Scholars share knowledge globally

Marglin, Chancellor and Googe are among six Trojans who earned Fulbright Scholar awards this year. Jenifer Crawford of the USC Rossier School of Education , Nina Kang of the USC Bovard College and Serghei Mangul of the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will journey to Mexico, Jordan and Moldova, respectively.

Since 1946, the Fulbright program has enabled more than 400,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and professionals to study, teach and conduct research in over 160 countries.

Notable Fulbrighters include 62 Nobel Laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize winners, 80 MacArthur Fellows, 41 heads of state or government, and thousands of leaders across the private, public and nonprofit sectors.

Passenger Plane Crashes in Brazil, Killing 61 Onboard

The Brazilian authorities said no one survived the crash, outside São Paulo on Friday afternoon. The airline, VoePass, said the cause was unknown.

Above the small city of Vinhedo, Brazil, on Friday, a passenger plane was falling from the sky. Residents began filming.

Those videos show the horrifying moment when an 89-foot-long plane, carrying 61 people and slowly spinning in circles, plummeted to earth. A moment after the plane disappears from view near a gated community, an enormous black plume of smoke rises from the spot.

One video then shows a house on fire, a swimming pool full of debris and a group of men peering over a scene of carnage in a yard: a shredded fuselage, twisted metal and, several yards in front of the cockpit, a body.

VoePass Flight 2283 crashed Friday toward the end of a scheduled two-hour flight from Cascavel, Brazil, to São Paulo. VoePass, a small Brazilian airline, said all 57 passengers and four crew members died in the accident.

The airline and Brazilian officials said they did not know why the plane had crashed.

The plane, an ATR 72, had all systems operating correctly when it took off, the airline said. The pilots did not signal any emergency, officials said. The aircraft, a twin-engine turboprop plane, was built in 2010 and was in compliance with Brazilian regulations, they added.
