The PhD Psychology is a 36-month full-time research degree conducted under the supervision of a faculty member culminating with submission of a research thesis.

Our research can help diagnose and support people with mental health conditions and improve cognitive and psychological health and wellbeing across the life course.

For example, it can help us understand how learners of different ages and with different levels of ability can be better supported, and show us how coaching, training and engagement can enhance performance, productivity or wellbeing.

Research in psychology at Heriot-Watt University is grouped by three main themes:

  • Cognition, brain and behaviour
  • Lifespan health and wellbeing
  • Work, society and environment.

Our brains and cognitive abilities develop from childhood through to old age. Research within this theme explores those changes in healthy children and adults, as well as developmental conditions, dementia and stroke. Research spans from language to social cognition, including memory, motor control and body representation. A strong aspect of this theme is theoretically-informed translational interventions, making use of state-of-the-art multidisciplinary techniques such as robotics and virtual reality.

Lifespan Health and Wellbeing

Issues explored in psychology are inherently linked to wellbeing across the lifespan, affecting fields from education to health. Research in this theme explores health-promotion activities in children and adolescents, healthy ageing and mental health issues in developmental conditions.

Work, Society and Environment

Findings from psychology can impact people and society in several ways. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, research in this theme explores behaviour in the workplace, assessing risk in the environment, and interventions to improve workplace performance.

EPA, FDA, and USDA Issue Joint Regulatory Plan for Biotechnology

FDA News Release

In response to President Biden’s Executive Order 14081, “Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have developed a plan to update, streamline, and clarify their regulations and oversight mechanisms for products of biotechnology.

The plan helps meet the President’s goals of ensuring public confidence in the biotechnology regulatory system and improving its transparency, predictability, coordination, and efficiency. Through engagement with developers and stakeholders, as well as horizon scanning for novel biotechnology products, the Agencies worked collaboratively to develop a cohesive plan. The plan incorporates processes and timelines to implement regulatory reform, such as identifying guidance and regulations to update, streamline, or clarify, and identifying the potential need for new guidance or regulations. The plan supports a whole-of-government approach to the regulation of biotechnology products.

The agencies have identified five major areas of biotechnology product regulation where these actions will focus:

  • Modified plants
  • Modified animals
  • Modified microorganisms
  • Human drugs, biologics, and medical devices
  • Cross-cutting issues

EPA, the FDA and USDA intend to implement the following joint efforts:

  • clarify and streamline regulatory oversight for genetically engineered (GE) plants, animals and microorganisms;
  • update and expand their information sharing through an MOU to improve and broaden communication and coordination of oversight of modified microbes; and
  • undertake a pilot project focused on modified microbes to explore and consider the feasibility and costs of developing a web-based tool that informs developers about which agency may regulate a given product category.

The Federal Government established the Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology in 1986 and most recently updated it in 2017. It describes the comprehensive federal regulatory policy for ensuring the safety of biotechnology products, including how EPA, the FDA, and USDA share responsibility for regulating many of the products of biotechnology in the United States. The Executive Order directs the three agencies to improve how they implement the Coordinated Framework.      In response to the Executive Order, the three regulatory Agencies, in consultation with the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), issued a Request for Information (RFI) to the public to solicit information on regulatory ambiguities, gaps, uncertainties, or inefficiencies in the Coordinated Framework. The agencies received 88 distinct public comments, including a sign-on letter from over 6,000 members from biotechnology developers, producers, manufacturers, non-governmental organizations, and academia. The Agencies will continue to engage with all interested stakeholders as they implement the plan.

Visit the Unified Website for Biotechnology Regulation for additional information on modernizing the regulatory system for biotechnology products and Executive Order 14081.

The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, radiation-emitting electronic products, and for regulating tobacco products.

Salik reports Q1 2024 revenue of AED562 million

D UBAI, 13th May, 2024 (WAM) -- The Board of Directors of Salik Company PJSC (Salik), Dubai’s exclusive toll gate operator, chaired by Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board, today announced the Company’s financial results for the first quarter of 2024 (Q1 2024), logging with 122.8 million revenue-generating trips and total revenue of AED562 million. This marks an increase of 8.1 percent YoY, the highest Q1 revenue-generating trips since inception.

Toll usage revenue, which represents 87.4 percent of total revenue, also increased 8.1 percent YoY to AED491 million, supported by continued strong growth in tourism and residency, with Dubai remaining an attractive destination both for visitors and new residents relocating to the city.

Commenting on the results, Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Salik, said, “Salik has delivered another strong quarter at the beginning of 2024, a continuation of the momentum from record top-line performance in 2023. The results achieved in the period are a testament to our strategic vision and commitment to delivering long-term value to our shareholders, as well as to the positive macroeconomic environment in the UAE. GDP growth coupled with strong tourism inflow are evidence that the Government of Dubai’s initiatives to expand the economy, particularly focusing on population growth and maintaining the Emirate’s attractiveness to visitors, are bearing fruit.”

Ibrahim Sultan Al Haddad, Chief Executive Officer of Salik, commented, “We are very pleased to have started the year strongly, with revenue-generating trips increasing by over 8 percent year-on-year, supporting our ambition to become a global leader in mobility solutions. We continue to thrive in our core tolling business and remain focused on diversifying our portfolio through the expansion of ancillary revenue streams. The first quarter marked a period of strategic progress, having announced an expansion of our toll gate network through the addition of two new gates in Dubai, which we plan to be operational by November of this year.”

Meanwhile, registered active accounts increased 16.5 percent YoY to approximately 2.5 million from approximately 2.1 million in Q1 2023, with tag activations reaching c.242,000 tags in the first quarter, an almost 13 percent YoY increase. In addition, the number of vehicles registered with Salik in the first quarter increased 9.2 percent YoY, reflecting the Government of Dubai’s ongoing success in expanding the economy and ensuring the Emirate remains a key destination for tourism and new residents.

Salik continued to offer tariff exemptions to vehicles used by charities, schools, people of determination, ambulances, and other public services. The number of free-of-charge trips made by exempted vehicles through Salik’s eight toll gates increased 5.1 percent YoY to c. 2.1 million in the first quarter of 2024. Growth was mainly driven by an increase in the number of registered exempted vehicles which grew 10 percent YoY to reach 53,819 vehicles by the end of the quarter.
