The University of Virginia offers a reduced fee for eligible graduate students enrolled in on-Grounds programs but studying away from the Charlottesville area full-time. Students can meet the academic requirements for eligibility by meeting one of the following options:

  • Enrolled full-time in research hours (at least 12 credits among the following School of Education and Human Development course numbers: 8998, 8999, 9991, 9998, or 9999) and an advisor-approved travel away from the Charlottesville area for at least 75% of the semester in which the reduced fee will be applied; or
  • Enrolled full-time in research hours (at least 12 credits among the following School of Education and Human Development course numbers: 8998, 8999, 9991, 9998, or 9999) and living away from the Charlottesville area for at least 75% of the semester in which the reduced fee will be applied, as evidenced by their permanent address in SIS; or
  • Enrolled full-time in a School of Education and Human Development internship/externship (e.g. teaching internship for MT students or final semester internship for Communication Disorders MEd students) with a placement away from the Charlottesville area.

For the purposes of the reduced fee eligibility, the Charlottesville area is defined as the cities of Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Staunton, and Harrisonburg, and the counties of Albemarle, Greene, Madison, Orange, Louisa, Fluvanna, Buckingham, Nelson, Augusta and Rockingham. All students eligible for the reduced fee must be located outside of these areas for their research hours (options 1 and 2) or internship/externship (option 3).

Access and Restrictions: Off-Grounds research-only students may enroll in the University's student health insurance plan and may access Student Health services. They may also continue to access the University Library's services and resources remotely or in person. They may not access other services provided to students who pay the full comprehensive fee, including athletics events, recreational facilities, University Transit services, or Safe Ride. While on off-grounds research only/internship/externship status, graduate students are ineligible for graduate assistantships (GTA or GRA). Students eligible through options 1 and 2 may not enroll in any non-research credits while on off-grounds status. Students eligible through option 3 may not enroll in any credits outside of the 12+ credits of internship/externship and, if applicable, the distance education seminar credits associated with the internship/externship credits.

The School of Education and Human Development will endeavor to identify eligible students and apply the reduced fees to their accounts prior to the start of each term, but should students feel they are eligible and do not have the reduced fee applied, they should reach out to the contact listed at the bottom of this page.

Students are responsible for all tuition and fees associated with their enrollment in classes. Students can work with Student Financial Services to request third-party and employer billing if the agency has agreed to pay all or a specified portion of student charges. The payments will be sent directly from the agency to UVA, and the agency requires UVA to issue an itemized invoice addressed in their name. For more information about initiating third-party and employer payments, students should visit the website for Student Financial Services .

Please note that students receiving tuition reimbursement through their employers are not eligible for third-party billing; for more information about tuition reimbursement, please see the Tuition Reimbursement website.

Students who are enrolled in coursework as part of a school division's contract with the University will have their charges taken care of automatically, as dictated by the contract. If you are unsure of whether you are part of a contract, please contact your school division.

In most cases, students should be able to drop/withdraw from classes themselves in the Student Information System . Consult the drop/withdrawal deadlines on UVA's official academic calendar for each year. The current calendar can be found here:  https://registrar.virginia.edu/calendar/academic

If you are unable to drop/withdraw a class yourself in SIS, please contact: [email protected]  for assistance.

The School of Education and Human Development grants reduced tuition rates to eligible preK-12 educators. Reduced tuition is applicable to credit-bearing courses only; not to research credits. Review full eligibility requirements here:

Graduate Tuition Information

Tuition remission and tuition adjustment, tuition remission.

As part of teaching and research graduate assistantship award packages, qualifying doctoral students may receive tuition remission. Tuition remission provides for full payment of in-state tuition and fees during the academic year. Only doctoral students holding at least a half-time (10 hours per week) qualifying assistantship may be eligible for tuition remission in the term(s) in which they are employed.

Tuition Adjustment

Individual departments select a limited number of qualifying out-of-state doctoral students to receive tuition adjustments, which pay the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition. To be eligible for consideration, out-of-state doctoral students must be employed in a significant academic capacity at the University of Virginia and earn at least $5,000 in a graduate research and/or teaching assistantship during the year. Individual departments will determine students’ level of enrollment, verify that students meet the minimum required earnings, and award the tuition adjustments.

Tuition Remission or Adjustment Questions

For questions about tuition remission or tuition adjustments, reach out to our Office of Admission & Enrollment.

Graduate Student Health Insurance Subsidy

The University of Virginia covers the full cost of single-coverage premium for qualifying graduate students and this subsidy may be applied toward the purchase of a single-student, spousal, or family plan from the University’s graduate student health insurance provider. Qualifying students must earn at least $5,000 during the academic year through an appointment as a graduate research assistant (GRA) and/or graduate teaching assistant (GTA). Hourly and work-study assignments do not qualify students for the health insurance subsidy.

Graduate Student Health Insurance Subsidy Questions

Today’s education landscape needs leaders like you — dynamic educators and innovators committed to making sustainable and scalable change for all students by building on your professional experience in PreK–12 classrooms and districts; on college and university campuses; or in philanthropies, nonprofits, policy organizations, and ed-tech initiatives.

That’s why the Harvard Graduate School of Education launched an online Master's in Education Leadership, a two-year, part-time Ed.M. program with Higher Education and PreK-12 pathways specifically designed for working education professionals who bring at least seven years of relevant or transferrable work experience. The program will strengthen the invaluable skills you’ve already developed and give you the tools to propel yourself to new leadership opportunities and to even greater impact.

“Skilled leadership is essential to creating opportunity and overcoming the longstanding inequities that create barriers to success. At HGSE, we are committed to helping you meet today’s complex challenges by becoming the type of leader education needs.” Bridget Long Dean and Saris Professor of Education and Economics Harvard Graduate School of Education

A New Option for Experienced Educators

The online Master's in Education Leadership from HGSE consists of a diverse cohort of professionals like you — leaders who are advancing in their careers, and who bring important perspectives grounded in real-world challenges. Our program is conducted almost exclusively online — except for one short on-campus experience, where you'll meet your cohort in person and build community prior to the start of the first fall semester.

The program offers a distinctive Harvard experience — including deep engagement and interaction with Harvard faculty and talented peers, as well as a lifelong professional network — within an intentionally designed curriculum and robust opportunities for mentorship and coaching. The program is career-embedded — so you can immediately apply what you are learning, in real time, to the work you are doing on the ground.

Two Pathways: Higher Education and PreK–12

In the online Master’s in Education Leadership, you will choose between two Professional Pathways — Higher Education or PreK–12 — that align with the area of practice or the student community in which your work will make an impact. Students interested in advancing into senior leadership roles in colleges and universities, or in organizations that impact higher education, should study in the Higher Education Pathway . Students who want to do change-making work within the education ecosystem on behalf of students from early childhood to secondary education levels should select the PreK–12 Pathway .

Our prescribed curriculum is intentionally designed to meet your professional needs. It is anchored in both foundational knowledge and core competencies in education leadership related to the U.S. education system. You will also complete pathway-specific courses to advance your leadership in higher education or preK–12 education, as well as the Foundations courses. You will also have the opportunity to select courses from a small subset of electives. A minimum of 42 credits are required to graduate with an Ed.M. degree from HGSE.

The main elements of the curriculum are:

Foundations Courses

Throughout the two-year program, you will participate in Foundations courses in four areas: How People Learn, Leading Change, Evidence, and Equity and Opportunity. Through the Foundations, you’ll build core skills central to the profession of education.

  • The online Ed.M. program commences with How People Learn, which runs online June–July and requires a time commitment of 12–15 hours per week.
  • Additional Foundations learning goals and experiences tied to Leading Change and Equity and Opportunity will be incorporated into other required courses during your two-year program.

Professional Pathways

All students will choose between the Higher Education and PreK–12 Pathways. Throughout the program, you will take both cross-pathway courses and pathway-specific courses. Cross-pathway courses will allow you to develop leadership skills that are important across sectors, as well as have discussions about how higher education and preK–12 can work more effectively together. Cross-pathway courses include:

  • Real Talk: The Art and Practice of Communications
  • Strategic Finance for Nonprofit Leaders

Pathway-specific courses are directed to the knowledge and skills important for leadership in the Pathway professional setting.

Elective Coursework

Students will have the opportunity to choose from a curated list of electives during the optional January terms, and during the fall and spring of their second year. Sample elective courses:

  • Law and Higher Education
  • Leading a School through Challenge and Crisis
  • Race, Equity, and Leadership
  • Teaching Exceptional Learners in Inclusive Classrooms
  • Why Can’t Higher Education Change?
  • Writing Workshop

Note: Though some courses may include comparative and international examples, applicants should expect a focus on leadership within U.S. domestic educational institutions and systems.

Leadership Core Competencies

To help you manage, lead, and implement change in complex organizations, our curriculum explores the core leadership competencies that you'll need to elevate your skills, knowledge, and expertise, wherever you are in your career. Throughout your coursework, you will strengthen your ability to:

  • Lead change and think strategically
  • Foster productive organizational conditions
  • Navigate politics and practice political inclusion
  • Communicate effectively
  • Cultivate self-development and team professional development skills

Higher Education Pathway

All students will choose between the Higher Education and PreK–12 Pathways. The Higher Education Pathway prepares you to be a dynamic leader in a diverse range of postsecondary education contexts. It is designed to increase your knowledge of the practices, policies, processes, challenges, and opportunities in American postsecondary education. You will enhance your repertoire of strategies and management skills for tackling critical issues and introducing change — while preparing you to advance in your current career or move into other important leadership roles in higher education.

Sample courses for the Higher Education Pathway:

  • Creating the Future of American Postsecondary Education
  • Higher Education Leadership & Governance
  • Student Affairs in Higher Education: Theory-Driven Practices to Help Students Thrive

You will also have the opportunity to engage with accomplished leaders through HGSE’s unique President-in-Residence program.

Students interested in the Higher Education Pathway currently hold administrative and mid-level leadership roles:

  • Colleges and universities, including in academic affairs, student affairs, admissions and enrollment management, advancement, and institutional research
  • Nonprofit education organizations
  • State and federal government agencies
  • Policy organizations focused on higher education

PreK–12 Pathway

All students will choose between the Higher Education and PreK–12 Pathways. The PreK–12 Pathway equips you to advance your leadership across the preK–12 landscape, including in such positions as teacher leader, principal, afterschool director, education agency representative, education nonprofit/philanthropic leader, or education entrepreneur.

Sample courses for the PreK–12 Pathway:

  • Strategic Leadership in the PreK–12 Ecosystem
  • Creating Conditions for Effective School, Family, and Community Partnerships
  • Leading Learning

Students interested in the PreK-12 Pathway currently hold administrative and mid-level leadership roles in:

  • PreK–12 schools, including as principals, assistant principals, and department heads
  • Nonprofit education organizations (I.e., foundations, advocacy organizations, technical assistant organizations).
  • Policy organizations focused on preK–12 education

Projected Time Commitment

Courses combine synchronous meetings and asynchronous work and assignments. Live or synchronous aspects of required courses will occur on weekdays (Monday–Friday) between 6 and 9 p.m. ET . Some elective courses, outside the required curriculum, may be offered at alternative times. On average, this degree requires 12 to 18 hours of work per week, though the weekly commitment will vary by term, courses taken, and students' own work styles. Students can expect to spend approximately five to seven hours per week in synchronous online class sessions with faculty members and classmates. The remaining hours will be spent working independently on asynchronous class preparation, in self-scheduled small-group work with other students or working on assignments.

Weekly Time Estimate

To complete the online Ed.M. in Education Leadership, students must complete 42 total credit hours of coursework over the two-year program. Cost Of A Master’s Degree: What To Know Before You Enroll

Cost Of A Master’s Degree: What To Know Before You Enroll

Earning a master’s degree is an excellent idea in theory, often resulting in great returns like specialized industry knowledge, improved job security and higher income. However, like most undertakings in life, you cannot begin or complete a master’s program until you can pay for it.

The average cost of a master’s degree is nearly $40,000, posing a significant barrier to many learners. College students from low-income backgrounds are more likely to leave school before finishing their degree, and those who do graduate often take longer than usual to do so. So if you’re hesitant about applying to a master’s program because you’re not sure how to pay for it, you’re not alone—but you have options to make graduate education more affordable.

This article explores the cost of master’s degrees at both public and private colleges. We also touch on the cost of an online master’s and provide tips on reducing the cost of your graduate education.

Why You Can Trust Forbes Advisor Education

Forbes Advisor’s education editors are committed to producing unbiased rankings and informative articles covering online colleges, tech bootcamps and career paths. How Much Is a Master’s Degree?

Earning a master’s degree involves a significant financial investment involving tuition, fees and other expenses. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports that the average graduate degree cost $19,749 per year in tuition and fees as of the 2020-21 academic year.

However, determining the true cost of a master’s degree can be confusing since this figure accounts for several factors aside from tuition, such as:

  • Whether your college is public or private
  • The specific graduate program you choose
  • Your school’s location
  • The length of your degree program
  • Whether you’re an in-state or out-of-state student
  • Whether you attend in person or online

Private College Tuition vs. Public College Tuition

According to NCES, the average annual graduate tuition at public colleges is $12,394. Meanwhile, graduate students at private schools pay an average of $26,621 per year.

However, there’s some tuition disparity even among private universities. For-profit colleges, which are generally run as businesses, charge an average annual tuition of $14,301. But master’s students at private, nonprofit universities pay $28,445 per year in tuition and fees on average.

Overall, graduate students at private colleges and universities pay 101% more than their public-school counterparts on average.

As of 2020, 73% of postsecondary students were enrolled in public institutions. Private, nonprofit institutions enrolled 22% of college students, and private, for-profit institutions held only 5% of the postsecondary population.

Depending on which type of college you choose, the total cost of a two-year master’s degree could range from around $25,000 to $57,000.

In-State vs. Out-of-State College Tuition

If you choose to earn your master’s degree at a public university, note that public colleges usually charge different tuition rates to in-state and out-of-state learners. In-state students are those who attend a college within their primary state of residence. Out-of-state students pursue their degrees in states where they are not permanent residents.

In-state students typically pay less in tuition because they and their families pay state taxes, which help fund public colleges. As such, the state subsidizes tuition rates for learners attending in-state, public schools.

NCES does not distinguish between in-state tuition and out-of-state tuition at the graduate level, so we’ll explore these variations by institution. For example, most in-state graduate students at the University of California, Los Angeles pay around $18,140 in annual tuition. Non-California residents, however, pay about $33,240 per year.

Similarly, out-of-state students attending colleges like Georgia State University and Montana State University pay around 200% more than the states’ residents.

How Much Does an Online Master’s Degree Cost?

The Covid-19 pandemic caused a surge in online learning since physical contact and commuting were highly restricted. Educators and learners alike had to seek alternative platforms for school, and by the fall of 2021, 59% of students in postsecondary institutions were enrolled in online programs.

Online master’s degrees often cost less than traditional ones for several reasons. First, remote learners pay for just the cost of attendance—plus technology or distance learning fees, if applicable. Student fees for on-campus facilities and activities don’t generally apply to distant learners. Moreover, online learning eliminates transportation expenses as students don’t need to commute.

Also, it’s common for public online universities to extend in-state rates to all distance learners, regardless of where they live.

Tuition for online master’s degrees vary based on the institution and program of study. NCES does not distinguish between online and on-campus master’s programs in its tuition data, so we’ll again look at specific institutions for examples. The annual tuition for Southern New Hampshire University graduate students is $12,000. And at Eastern Washington University , master’s tuition ranges from $13,200 to $18,000 per year.

How To Pay for a Master’s Degree

Scholarships.

Scholarships award financial support based on academic or professional achievements. Schools like the University of North Texas and the University of Oregon often award university-wide and department-specific graduate scholarships. You can also find master’s scholarship opportunities through independent organizations like Scholly , GoGrad and FastWeb .

Assistantships

An assistantship is an exchange between you—the graduate student—and your higher education institution. As an assistant, you offer your time and labor in exchange for a monthly stipend and tuition waiver.

Securing a graduate assistantship position is quite competitive, but demonstrating academic excellence and team spirit can get you a long way. Depending on which roles are open in your department, you could work as a teaching, research or administrative support assistant.

Student Loans

Many learners turn to student loans to help fund their graduate education. There are two types of student loans to explore: public and private.

The government offers various tiers of federal student loans, with different interest rates and eligibility criteria. Direct PLUS loans, for example, are available only to graduate and professional students. With these loans, enrolled graduate students with an acceptable credit history or qualified endorsers can borrow money for tuition.

On the other hand, private student loans are provided by banks, credit unions and other private lenders. Graduate students need good credit scores to qualify for private loans. And although eligible borrowers can get better terms from private lenders, the repayment process is typically less flexible than federal loan repayment systems.

Employer Tuition Reimbursement Programs

Through tuition reimbursement programs, employers cover part or all of employees’ education costs as long as their study program falls within company guidelines. Many employers embrace such programs because they believe their companies will benefit from more highly educated employees.

Some employers require tuition reimbursement recipients to remain at the company for a specific duration after completing their education. And if they decide to leave before the term ends, they must repay a percentage of the education cost.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About the Cost of a Master’s Degree

How do people afford a master's degree.

Graduate students can help pay for their degrees by working part time during their studies. Plus, several other options exist to reduce the cost of a master’s degree, such as scholarships, assistantships, grants, student loans and tuition reimbursement programs.

Is a master's more expensive than a bachelor's?

The annual tuition for a master’s program at a public college is much higher than a bachelor’s tuition. Graduate students pay roughly $12,390 per year on average, according to NCES data, while undergraduates pay about $9,380. That said, earning a bachelor’s degree overall may cost more since bachelor’s programs typically last four years, while master’s programs last two.

How many years does it take to get a master's degree?

A master’s degree typically takes two years to earn. However, studying part time can extend your degree timeline, and an accelerated program may shorten it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is reciprocity.

Reciprocity is when a state’s board of education sees another state’s licensing requirements as equal to or superior to its own.

How it Works at Liberty

Our licensure-track master’s in education programs are designed to support state reciprocity. If you are seeking licensure outside of Virginia, we have a licensure specialist ready to assist you with the verification paperwork needed to apply for licensure in your state.

After applying for your Virginia license, you can complete the necessary steps for transferring your license to another state.

Can I do internships and field experiences during my online?

Practicums  allow you to learn alongside K-12 educators as you observe and integrate instructional strategies vital in today’s school system. These  course-embedded field experiences  typically range from  5-30 hours  during your course. At Liberty, you can choose a setting that aligns with your program and endorsement area!

During your final semester of an  advanced licensure program , you will  complete an internship  to gain teaching experience and demonstrate your content knowledge, skills, and competencies firsthand. This will take place in an accredited school under the supervision of a licensed educator.

We provide you with a team of  placement coordinators  dedicated to connecting you with a placement setting that fits your unique career path. Our team has  collaborated with schools in all 50 states  as well as many international schools.

Master's Funding

We select students for scholarships based on several factors, including the amount of funds available to award each year and the number of students deemed eligible to receive our support.

When making funding decisions, our scholarship review committee considers students’ demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid, academic merit as determined by the program, and/or a combination of both.

Marsal Education endeavors to help sustain the academic excellence of the Michigan graduate community, and as such, considers students for scholarships who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity in the academic, professional, or civic realm through their work experience, volunteer engagement, or leadership of student or community organizations for our scholarship support. By commitment to diversity, we mean efforts to reduce social, educational or economic disparities among race, ethnicity or gender, or efforts to improve race relations in the U.S.

Educator Preparation Program (EPP) scholarship offers For the 2023–24 academic year, Marsal Education offered scholarships to 100% of students admitted to the Master of Arts with Elementary Teacher Certification and Master of Arts with Secondary Teacher Certification programs. In-state students were offered a minimum scholarship of $12,000, and out-of-state students were offered a minimum scholarship of $15,000.

Eligible AmeriCorps and Teach for America community members—including currently serving corps members, senior corps members, alumni who have completed a term of AmeriCorps service, and staff members who have been employed for at least two years—are eligible to receive a scholarship of up to 25% of tuition.

Cost of Attendance

The Johns Hopkins School of Education estimates your Cost of Attendance (COA) each academic year by projecting your educational costs based on federal regulatory guidelines. The Office of Financial Aid uses the COA to determine your financial need and aid eligibility.

The COA consists of direct costs, such as tuition and fees, and indirect costs, including books, transportation, computer, loan, personal expenses, housing, and food.

The indirect portion of your COA is a modest estimate of a student’s cost of living (housing, board, books, etc.) aligned with federal guidelines. It is not meant to serve as an exact assessment of your actual expenses. Each student’s COA will vary depending on the program of study, dependency, and enrolled credit load.

After the Department of Education processes your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the information is sent to the University’s Office of Student Enrollment & Account Management (SEAM) – Financial Aid. The Office of Student Enrollment and Account Management (SEAM) works cross-functionally to provide support with financial aid, student accounts, and registration.

Please request support through SEAM’s online form to review your COA budget.

¹ Student Health Insurance – All full-time students (registered for nine or more credits per semester – fall/spring) must either enroll in JHU’s health insurance plan or submit a waiver showing comparable health insurance coverage. All International students with an active F1 or J1 Visa status are ineligible to waive and must purchase the university plan.

* If you are student living in housing on a military base or for which you receive a basic allowance under section 403(b) of Title 37 of the United States Code, please contact SEAM to discuss how this may affect your cost of attendance.

Please note: Students with special circumstances for unanticipated expenses can request a budget adjustment to their cost of attendance that may allow for additional federal borrowing eligibility

Student Health Insurance

We highly recommend that all SOE students maintain adequate health insurance coverage to provide protection against unexpected accidents and illnesses. However, students may waive enrollment in the school plan if covered by a plan that is comparable to that offered by the University.

SOE students currently in full–time status (registered for 9 credits or more per semester) must either purchase the university-sponsored student health insurance plan at their own expense or complete the health insurance waiver process. International students with an F–1 or J–1 visa status must purchase the university plan and will be automatically enrolled.

Financing Your Master’s Degree

A master’s degree is a significant investment in your future, and financing your education is a critical factor to consider. GSE master's programs are largely self-funded. Most master’s students at Stanford GSE require financial support, funding their program with a variety of sources including personal savings, loans, external fellowships, family funds, and funding from governments. Below you’ll find information about financing your master’s program.

Cost of Attendance

Tuition varies among master’s programs and depends on the units taken by the student. In addition to tuition expenses, a master’s program involves other living expenses such as rent, food, and transportation. The sum of tuition and non-tuition expenses constitute the standard cost of attendance. As you consider applying to graduate school, you can use the charts below—plus any additional expenses you might have—to create your financial plan.

Estimated Cost of Attendance 2024-2025**

The tuition and non-tuition expenses of the cost of attendance are set by the university on an annual basis.

**Please note this is the standard estimated cost for a single student living on campus. Parts of the below cost of attendance are fixed, and others are variable. For example, cardinal care may be waived and if you are commuting from around the bay area, you can spend more or less than these estimates. The fixed parts of our cost of attendance are tuition and the health service fee.

Financial aid from the GSE

Dean’s fellowships  for master’s students are prestigious awards that recognize a student’s excellent academic record and whose life experiences and background would contribute distinctively to the community of scholars at the GSE and the field of education. No service is expected in return for a fellowship nor do fellowships need to be repaid. Dean’s fellowships are awarded along with the offer of admission. If an offer letter does not include fellowship information, a fellowship has not been awarded. Fellowship offers are final and non-negotiable.

To be considered: All applicants, including both U.S. domestic and international applicants, are automatically considered for Dean's fellowships as a part of the application process. No additional action is required.

Additional GSE funding options are awarded to specific populations at the GSE. Consideration for these awards is communicated with the offer of admission.

Claudio X. González Graduate Student Aid Fund provides fellowships to selected ICE/IEPA admitted students who are citizens of Mexico.

Lemann Foundation awards full tuition and the majority of living expenses for selected ICE/IEPA, LDT, and joint MA/MBA admitted students from Brazil.

To be considered for these fellowships:  Applications for these fellowships are not required. Applicants who are eligible for these fellowships will be contacted if admitted to their program of interest.

Financial aid from Stanford University

At the graduate level, university financial aid typically refers to student loans offered by Stanford’s central financial aid office . Most of our master’s students take out loans as part of their financial plan.

Federal Direct Loans are direct subsidized and direct unsubsidized loans based on eligibility, with borrowing limits in place.

Federal Direct PLUS Loans allow students to borrow any loan amount up to the total student budget determined by Stanford, less any other resources.

Private (non-federal) loans , sometimes called alternative loans, are offered by many banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions. Private loan programs may offer interest rates and terms that are competitive with those of federal loans.

To be considered for student loans: While any student may apply for private loans, federal loans are only available to U.S. domestic students and are not available to international students. Students seeking federal loans must apply through the central Stanford University Financial Aid Office by completing both a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Stanford University Graduate Loan Application. Admitted Master's students who wish to receive a financial aid award letter before April 15 must apply by the priority deadline, typically in early-to-mid-March.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) program aims to prepare the next generation of global leaders to address the increasingly complex challenges facing the world. The program selects up to 100 students each year and provides financial support for the full cost of attendance for master’s studies at Stanford.

To be considered for KHS: Eligible applicants must submit two separate applications: the KHS application for the scholarship and leadership program in October 2023, and the GSE application for your PhD or Master's program-of-interest in November 2023. Exact deadlines have yet to be set.

  • External fellowships

There are many funding opportunities offered outside of Stanford. The GSE admissions team has compiled an external fellowships and grants document for you to explore, though you should plan to do your own research into external funding as well. International students can find additional sources of funding on the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Funding for U.S. Study website .

U.S. veterans

Stanford is committed to providing benefits through the Yellow Ribbon Provision of the Post 9/11 GI Bill® to students in degree-seeking programs. GSE students who qualify for Chapter 33 benefits at the 100% level, may be eligible for additional funding through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Please note that for GSE students receiving tuition fellowship funding, the Yellow Ribbon match may reduce and in some cases replace institutional grants and scholarships. Instructions for activating Veteran’s Affairs educational benefits for enrollment at Stanford are on the Office for Military-Affiliated Communities web page, Activate VA Education Benefits at Stanford .

International students

To meet immigration regulations, international students must show proof of adequate financial support to cover the length of time of their graduate program. While international students are not eligible for U.S. federal loan programs, they may qualify for private/alternative loans. Many lenders, however, require that a U.S. citizen or permanent resident co-sign the loan. You can find information and tools to help you choose private loan programs most frequently used by Stanford students here . A comprehensive list of private loan programs is available at FinAid.org .

Of all the funding and financial aid options listed above, international students are eligible for:

  • Dean's fellowships
  • Other GSE funding options
  • Private (non-federal) loans
  • Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) program

Resources for enrolled students

The GSE and Stanford University offer various forms of financial support to enrolled students.

GSE resources

Once master’s students matriculate, there are a variety of resources available to support academic work and unanticipated needs.

Travel fellowships are awarded for travel associated with paper presentations at conferences during a GSE master’s student’s academic program.

GSE Student Emergency Fund assists graduate students who experience a financial emergency or unanticipated expenses causing financial hardship. This fund is meant to support those who cannot reasonably resolve their financial difficulty through fellowships, loans, or personal resources.

ICE/IEPA MA Fund supports academic and professional development (e.g., MA paper research, conferences) in the field of international comparative education.

Stanford University resources

Cardinal Care subsidy: The university’s Cardinal Care student health insurance plan is managed by the Vaden Health Center . The Financial Aid Office administers an automatic university-wide subsidy program for graduate students.

Graduate Student Aid Fund: The Financial Aid Office assists a limited number of graduate students with university fees such as the Campus Health Service Fee and Cardinal Care Insurance when those fees cause significant hardship.

Emergency Grant-In-Aid Fund assists graduate students who experience a financial emergency or unanticipated expenses (e.g., medical or dental) causing financial hardship.

Graduate Family Grant provides need-based funding for graduate students with dependent children . Funds may be used flexibly to cover expenses such as childcare, healthcare, insurance and rent.

Graduate housing loan offers temporary financial support to graduate students for off-campus housing move-in costs , such as first and last month's rent and security deposit.

Paid internships: Internships may be for pay or course credit, but not both for the same work. Programs that require students to complete an internship may provide paid opportunities. Approval from your program director is required.

Additional hourly work: Students may work for pay as "casual labor" at Stanford for up to eight hours a week, provided work does not adversely impact the academic program. Approval from your program director is required.

How much does it cost to study in the US?

  • Introduction

Costs of study at different types of US university

What funding is available to study in the us, how can you calculate your own costs of studying in the us.

While the US remains the world’s most popular destination for international students, it’s also among the most expensive choices. However, although the headline costs of  studying in the US  may be daunting, often involving a string of five-digit numbers, it’s worth checking all the facts on fees and  funding options  before you make up your mind, as it may work out cheaper than you initially think.

In HSBC’s  2018 report , The Value of Education, the US again emerged among the top choices for parents considering university abroad for their child – but also one of the most expensive, with students spending an average of US$99,417 over the course of their degree.

With most undergraduate degrees at public universities costing $26,290 (according to student support organization  College Board ), for many prospective students attending university in the US may seem about as realistic as crashing at the White House while you look for a place to live.

But before you abandon all hope of spending your student years playing baseball, going to the drive-thru and generally carving out your own version of the American dream, be reassured: there may be a way.

Anyone familiar with the basic rules of averages will have realized that College Board’s estimate is likely to include significant variation in either direction – and this is true. At the very top-tier US universities (the majority of which are private non-profits), fees and living costs are likely to add up to around US$60,000 per year, but it’s also possible to study in the US at a much lower outlay.

Those seeking a more affordable option will find lower tuition fees at US universities within the public sector. These are typically run as state university systems – collections of colleges within a state, which share some administrative aspects while operating as separate institutions. Public universities in the US have two tuition fee rates: one for state residents and one for everyone else. The second (more expensive) category applies equally to applicants from other US states and from other countries. Private universities tend to be much smaller than public universities and have a more diverse student population (both from different states and different countries) due to the fact that tuition is the same price for all students. You can read more about how public and private US universities compare  here .

According to College Board, published tuition fees for 2018/19 at state colleges are an average of US$10,230 for state residents, and $26,290 for everyone else. This compares to an average of $35,830 at private non-profit colleges. The cheapest options of all, however, are public-sector two-year colleges – also known as community, technical or city colleges – where average fees for 2018/19 are just $3,660.

Admittedly, you can’t complete a full degree at a two-year college, but you can gain an  associate’s degree . This counts as the first half of a bachelor’s degree, which can then be completed by transferring to a university for an additional two or three years.

Source:

When transport and other living expenses are factored in, College Board  estimates  the following annual budgets for undergraduate students in 2018/19:

  • $17,930 (community college)
  • $25,890 (in-state students at a four-year public college)
  • $41,950 (out-of-state students at a four-year public college)
  • $52,500 (private non-profit four-year college)

While these averages provide a helpful overview of the broad range of study costs in the US, it’s worth remembering there remains significant variation in tuition fees charged by each type of institution. At the most prestigious public universities, for instance, fees may be just as high as those in the private sector. For instance, the  University of Michigan  (one of the highest-ranked public US universities in the QS World University Rankings®)  estimates fees  for new out-of-state students in fall/winter 2018/19 at $49,350, on top of additional costs of $11,534 for room and board, $1,048 for books and study supplies and $2,454 for personal and miscellaneous items. This adds up to a total annual cost of $64,386, or $70,356 for graduate students.

When assessing the costs of studying in the US, it’s usual to distinguish between the “sticker price” – the published rates – and the amount students  actually  pay once various sources of funding and financial aid are considered. Unlike in other countries, it’s rare for US students to pay the full tuition amount. In  2015/16 , 85 percent of full-time undergraduate students at four-year universities in the US received some form of financial aid, including 83 percent of those at public colleges and 89 percent at private non-profit colleges.

Often, the most prestigious US universities – with the highest sticker prices – offer the most generous funding opportunities. At  MIT , the highest-ranked university in the US (and  the world ), 58 percent of undergraduates receive financial aid. At  Caltech , almost 60 percent of undergraduates receive aid, while 98 percent of graduate students and 99% of doctoral candidates receive full financial support. Similar figures are cited by most other leading US universities, with forms of support including scholarships, grants, assistantships and work-study schemes.

While some funding avenues are only open to US citizens, there are also lots of aid opportunities available to international students. The  University of Pennsylvania , for instance, allocates over $9 million every academic year in funding specifically for undergraduates from outside of the US, Canada and Mexico. According to data collected by  US News ,  Harvard University  allocated aid to 594 international undergraduates in 2017/18, with the average grant standing at $64,459, while Columbia University awarded an average of $66,350 to a total of 257 international undergraduates.

Funding information is provided on each US university’s website, and students should usually apply for financial aid at the same time as their application is submitted. A small number of elite US universities also have “ need-blind ” admission policies for all applicants. This means students’ financial background is not considered during the admissions process, and the university pledges to provide sufficient aid to ensure every successful applicant is able to attend.

In recent years, it’s become easier for individual students to calculate how much they could expect studying in the US to cost. All US universities are now legally required to include a fees and financial aid calculator on their websites, allowing students to get a rough idea of how much their intended course of study would cost and what aid they may be eligible for. These “net price calculators” can be accessed via the government’s  College Affordability and Transparency Center , which also provides details of the US universities with the highest and lowest tuition fees and net costs.

Masters Fees and Funding in the USA

Written by Mark Bennett

The USA is by far the world’s most popular study destination, but just how expensive is it? What are the typical cost of a Masters at an American university? What scholarships are available? And how easy is it for domestic and international students to find funding for a Masters in the USA?

This page will help you answer those questions, with detailed information about fees and funding for American students and international scholarships for Masters in the USA. If you’re looking for other information about studying in America, check out our detailed guide to Masters degrees in the USA . Or, if you’re already sure that postgraduate study in America is for you, why not get started searching for your ideal Masters in the USA ?

Masters fees in the USA

It’s no secret that the cost of a Masters in the USA can be quite high. At the same time, it’s important to bear in mind that a relatively small number of students in America pay the full cost of their programmes. Instead many receive Masters funding from their institution or from a wide range of other organisations .

Masters cost at American universities

America is home to one of the world’s largest and most complex higher education systems , with a wide range of institutions setting different fees for Masters degrees. Fees can also differ between academic and professional Masters programmes .

All of this can make the cost of US university difficult to summarise with a simple guideline figure. What follows is a general range, but you should remember that fees for actual programmes may be higher or than the amounts suggested here.

Public universities

Masters fees at public – or ‘state’ – universities in the USA are usually lower than private alternatives, with prices offset by state funding. Public universities also base fees on a student’s residency, with students from out-of-state paying at a higher rate (this also applies to international students).

There’s still plenty of variation in public university fees, but, as a rule, you can expect to pay around £12,000 per year at a public university and around £28,000 at a private university. The amount you pay can vary depending on the university you choose and if you are an international student.

Professional programmes

The fees given above refer to typical academic programmes. Prices for professional Masters programmes in the USA are likely to be higher – particularly in the case of MBA programmes, offered by renowned business schools.

Do international students pay more to study a Masters in the USA?

No – despite its reputation as an expensive study destination, you won’t normally be charged more to study abroad in the USA. This is because Masters fees at public universities in the USA depend on your state-residency, not your nationality.

  • If you’re an American citizen from the same state as the university, you’ll pay a lower ‘in-state’ fee.
  • If you’re from outside the state that hosts and funds your university, you’ll pay a higher ‘out-of-state’ fee, regardless of whether you’re a domestic or international student.

This approach is designed to reflect the way public universities are funded, with a benefit to those whose taxes (or whose parents’ taxes) have helped support their state university system.

Private universities (which don’t receive their funding from the state) don’t tend to distinguish between in-state and out-of-state students in this way. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll charge more to international students.

Other costs

The full cost of a Masters degree in the USA usually includes a few supplementary charges, most of which are associated with the applications process. You should try to budget for these as you plan for your graduate study:

  • Application costs – Applying for a Masters in the USA can be quite a complex process and you’ll usually have to pay a small administrative charge to cover this. The exact amount will vary, but won’t normally be more than $50-100. Bear in mind that if you apply to more than one institution, you’ll need to pay multiple application fees.
  • Graduate entry tests – Most American graduate programmes will ask for applicants to submit scores from graduate entry tests, such as the GMAT or GRE. The charges for these are separate to your tuition fees, but you should still bear them in mind when working out how much a Masters in the USA will cost you. Most tests cost between $200 and $1,250, but you can use the same score for multiple applications for up to five years. See our guide to applying for a Masters in the USA for more information.
  • Visa fees – It may not cost more to study as an international student in America, but you will have to pay for your student visa to be processed. If you're arriving on an F-1 visa, there’ll usually be a $350 fee to register with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), plus additional application and visa issuance fees for citizens of some countries. You can find more information in our guide to student visas in the USA .

Masters funding in Canada

The USA's North American neighbour is an extremely popular destination for international students, with lots of exciting funding opportunities. Read our guide to Masters scholarships in Canada .

Masters funding from US universities

Most larger universities maintain scholarship packages to help support students and these may be need-based (awarded to economically disadvantaged students) or merit-based (competitively awarded to the best applicants).

University funding will potentially be available to students regardless of nationality, but some awards may be reserved to support domestic or international applicants.

There are two main types of Masters funding available from universities in the USA:

  • Scholarships are awarded to cover the cost of tuition fees, though some also include a grant or regular stipend to help pay for accommodation and living costs. Your university will either pay you a lump sum, calculated to be sufficient for your programme, or it will simply waive the cost of your fees up to a certain amount. You should note that some scholarships for Masters in the USA are merit-based; if so, you may be required to maintain a certain GPA score in assessments during your course. You can read more about the GPA system in our guide to the assessment of US Masters degrees .
  • Assistantships are slightly different to scholarships. Instead of simply awarding a grant or bursary for graduate study, assistantships provide a fee waiver and / or stipend in return for services to the institution. This may involve teaching and demonstrating for undergraduates or assisting in a lab or workshop. Assistantships are more common for research students, but they can be offered as a means of funding for Masters students in the USA.

Federal Student Aid for US students

If you’re a US citizen, you may be able to receive financial aid from the government to help fund your studies. Generally, international students are not eligible to apply except in very specific circumstances .

You’ll also need to have financial need, but there is no income cut-off to qualify for financial aid. Rather, there are several factors considered when assessing your application.

Unlike undergraduate students, Masters and PhD applicants are considered independent for financial aid purposes, meaning only your own income and assets are taken into account, as opposed to your parents’.

The types of federal aid available for postgraduate students include:

#1 Federal loans

Loans available for Masters students include Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct PLUS Loans .

For Direct Unsubsidized Loans , your university determines how much money you’re eligible to receive, up to an upper limit that depends on your personal circumstances. Find out more about Direct Unsubsidized Loan limits. Interest rates are currently set at 7.05% for the 2023-24 year.

Direct PLUS Loans don’t award a set amount. Instead, you can borrow up to the full cost of your Masters programme, minus any other forms of financial support you are receiving for it. Interest rates are set at 8.05% for the 2023-24 year.

To apply, you’ll need to be studying a course at 50% intensity or more (part-time programmes are eligible for direct plus loans, provided you study on a ‘half-time’ basis or greater). You’ll also need a good credit history to apply a Direct PLUS loan. You won’t normally be able to receive a Direct PLUS Loan if you have a record of credit default or overdue debt for existing loans. In some cases, a parent or other US citizen may endorse your application as a guarantor.

As a Masters student you won’t repay your loan until six months after you cease to be enrolled on your course. Note that this repayment period will normally still come into effect if you exit your graduate programme early.

Actual repayment plans vary, but you can view a set of guides from the US Department of Education .

#2 Work-study

Federal work study provides part-time jobs for US students who have financial need, to help them cover their living costs and tuition fees.

Roles can be on or off campus, and where possible related to your field of study. Off-campus jobs are generally for nonprofit organisations or public agencies, and must be performed in the public interest.

Postgraduate students may be paid by the hour or by salary, depending on the type of role performed. How many hours you’re allowed to work will be determined by your university’s financial aid office.

Federal work-study is generally not available for international students, but there are other ways to earn money alongside your studies. We cover this in our guide to working in the USA as a student .

Applying for financial aid

To apply for financial aid, you’ll need to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Filling in the FAFSA involves creating an online account and receiving a unique FSA ID.

You should have access to the following documents and information when filling in the FAFSA:

  • Your social security number
  • Your driving license number (if you have one)
  • Your Alien Registration Number (of you are not a US citizen)
  • Tax documents or tax returns for yourself and your spouse (if married)
  • Records of any untaxed income, savings, cash or investments

The FAFSA form for becomes available for course starting the following year on 1 October annually. So if you’re planning to study a Masters or PhD starting in Autumn 2024, you’ll be able to fill in the FAFSA from 1 October 2023 .

The FAFSA deadline for 2023-24 is 30 June 2024 .

Masters scholarships and grants for international students in the USA

Given that America hosts more international students than any other country in the world, it’s no surprise that there’s plenty of funding available to study a Masters abroad in the USA.

Some of this takes the form of the university scholarships and assistantships described above, but other funding opportunities are intended specifically for foreign students.

The following are some of the most important providers of international student grants and scholarships for Masters in the USA:

  • The US-UK Fulbright Commission – Founded in 1948, the US-UK Fulbright Commission promotes mutual cultural understanding between the USA and the UK. It does so by providing an advisory service for students from both countries and by funding students on exchange programmes. If you are a UK national looking to study a Masters in the USA you may be eligible for Fulbright funding . Most awards will help support you in your first year of study and the Commission may also help facilitate your application for a visa to study in the USA. Successful recipients of Fulbright awards are usually able to demonstrate an interest in US culture and an intention to use their degree in a manner that benefits cultural relations between the US and the UK.
  • The Fulbright Foreign Student Programme – The Fulbright Foreign Student Programme is part of a wider government initiative to help foster understanding and positive relations between the USA and other nations around the world. It currently operates in over 150 countries, offering funding for international students to study on US graduate programmes. Eligibility details and funding amounts vary between countries, but most awards will support a student for up to a year of postgraduate study in the US. We've written a dedicated guide to the Fulbright-Nehru Masters Fellowships for Indian students in the USA.
  • American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation: International Fellowships – The AAUW supports women in academia, particularly within the American university system. Its International Fellowships are available to women from outside the US who wish to study a postgraduate degree at an American university. Candidates are selected based on merit and their commitment to support and represent the empowerment of women through education. Funding of $20,000 is available to fund each applicant for one year of study, with some awards renewing for a second year.

You can also use Education USA, America’s official study portal, to search for financial aid opportunities .

Graduate Cost of Attendance

Srfs sidebar menu.

Information about the cost of attendance for Penn’s graduate and professional programs.

The cost of attendance represents the cost of attending Penn for an academic year, and includes both direct costs that appear on your student bill such as tuition and fees, and indirect costs that are not billed by Penn, such as living expenses, books and supplies, transportation, and an allowance for personal expenses. Students should consider their cost of attendance as their budget for each academic year. Penn also uses the cost of attendance to help determine a student’s eligibility for financial aid.

Each of Penn’s graduate and professional programs has a unique cost of attendance based on the billed and unbilled expenses of that program. Some elements are consistent across all programs, but many are linked to the specific requirements of your program.

This section lists tuition and mandatory fees for each of the graduate and professional schools, along with living expense budgets where applicable. For more information about costs specific to your program, visit your graduate school's website.

The Master of Education by dissertation or by coursework and research report is a 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time degree.

The Master of Education Degree Programme can be completed either by coursework and research report or by dissertation only. Students can study full time (one year to complete the programme) or part-time (two years to complete the programme).

For the MEd b y coursework and research report, students select three courses, of which two are normally selected from the 'course package' most closely related to their likely area of research.

These packages include:

  • Applied language and literacy education
  • Curriculum and Tertiary Teaching
  • Education Leadership and Policy Studies
  • Education and Work
  • Educational Technology
  • Inclusive Education
  • Mathematics and Science Education

The third course may be selected from another package in the School of Education or, subject to approval, from those offered by other schools in the Faculty of Humanities or in Science Education.
