There was once a time when people preferred the small town living existence due to its inherent slow paced lifestyle and laid back, relaxing surroundings. Neighbors knew each other on a first name and last name basis and shared lazy Sunday afternoons at church or town sponsored fairs and socials. That kind of lifestyle probably still exists in some remote towns of the country. Or maybe it just exists in those Hollywood movies like Sweet Home Alabama. The reality of the situation is that the slow paced lifestyle that once described American living has given way to big city living. Being a person who exists in the 21st century, I am more comfortable with big city living for more reasons than just one.

First of all, big city living offers its residents an exciting lifestyle. Each day is an adventure as the city continuously offers something new to discover. There is always a new place opening up where people are encouraged to be different and try something new. The city offers its inhabitants a the opportunity to dive head on into the world of the future. City living is best lived in by people whose imagination knows no boundaries and wants to soar above the city lights that give glimmer to an otherwise dark night. I believe that is the reason why most small town people dream of eventually living in the big city. The surprises that big city living offers is simply too vast to quantify.

For me, big city living adventure began the day I learned to differentiate sounds. Living here is more than an adventure, it is an educational and social learning experience. There is no better place to learn about life than the city. Where everyone seems to be living in a glass menagerie and we can freely observe people and their attitudes in a habitat that they create for themselves. It may not be as open and nature bound as town living, but that is the beauty of city living. One learns by mingling with their friends and allowing strangers into their lives on a need to know basis.

Education-wise, the city offers an educational system that cannot be equaled in the small towns. All aspects of city living simply screams education. From the advertising billboards on the side of the bus to the hot dog cart vendor, there is always something new to learn. City dwellers have more stories with moral lessons to turn than any school teacher can teach.

Others say that there is a superficiality to city living because of the fast paced lifestyle led by the people. It seems like nobody really knows anything about their neighbors because they just live in the same building and nothing more. The truth of the matter is that city dwellers do not need all that time for face to face socialization because city living is designed to actually allow a person to have a social life on a different level. Like I explained earlier, city dwellers have a more adventurous spirit.

Such is the adventurous spirit that even the socialization aspect of our lives are dealt with in the same manner. While small towns would probably rely on Friday night socials or bingo nights, we rely on the internet, text messaging, and blogging to stay in touch with people and make friends. These friendships are not superficial at all because city dwellers tend to create an extended family among strangers due to the distance between them and relatives.

I cannot imagine myself moving out of the city because city living has a different kind of energy that keeps a person pumped up and ready for action. In order to live and survive in the city, one must possess quick with and abilities. Let me put it this way, city living makes one feel alive. Nothing can beat waking up late in the morning and then rushing out the door to catch the bus in order to not miss the first appointment of the day.

Big city living is the trend of the future. Urbanization has taken over the country as more and more states become reliant on industries for their income. The slow paced lifestyle of the past is only a hindrance to the future of any community. the importance of urbanization can be seen in every aspect of small town living that is now becoming a thing of the past. Even the farmers now rely heavily on technology to keep their farms running more efficiently and productively. Something they learned from following the big city models of running a production output oriented business.

More importantly, the city if where everything of importance is coming to the fore. Advances in the field of medicine are concentrated within the city because of the experimental advantages. While small town people are known for their good health, city dwellers are known for the amazing anti-bodies that our bodies contain due to certain unknown toxins that surround us. We are actually a lot healthier than the small town dwellers because our bodies are constantly fighting off airborne viral infections and thereby developing the necessary anti-bodies. My mother grew up in a small town. She told me that the first time she moved to the city, she was constantly fighting off infections just to be able to make it to work. So she was amazed when I was born and was practically never sick since childhood save for the occasional cold.

City living requires a person to learn how to handle himself in various, unexpected situations. There is nothing rudimentary about city living because of the way city life is designed to constantly evolve over time. If you are a person who believes that man was meant to constantly evolve and learn new things, then city living is meant for you. After all, cities seem to have a life of its own. Constantly changing and evolving in looks while the people living within try their best to keep up with the times and interests of those who make the city work.

In the end, city living is probably best described as a way of life for the youth. City living keeps on constantly on their toes and feeling young because everything about the life is meant to be enjoyed to the hilt. It is a never ending adventure that cannot be compared to anything else in the world. It is a state of mind that does not pigeon hole anybody because of his surroundings. City dwelling is all about breaking free and discovering ones self.

Living in the city is like the travel bug. Once you have been bitten by it, you will never want to stop. It is so enjoyable that nobody seems to ever get tired or grow old. It is more than a state of mind, city living is a state of physical and mental personality. Go ahead, try living in the city, it will change your life.

How the pros and cons of city living vary around the world

Every day, more people become city dwellers. The challenge of urban existence is to balance its benefits and its drawbacks.

For most of the six million years of human evolution , all humans and protohumans lived like somewhat glorified chimpanzees , at low population densities, scattered over the landscape as families or small bands. Only within the past 6,000 years, a small fraction of human history, did some of our ancestors come together in cities. But today more than half the world’s people live in these new settings, some of which have tens of millions of inhabitants.

Urban life involves trade-offs. We may gain big benefits in return for suffering big disadvantages. Let’s consider two of them: the trade-off between individual freedom and community interests, and the trade-off between social ties and anonymity.

To understand the issue of freedom, take first the city of Singapore , in effect one of the world’s most densely populated micro-countries. Singapore’s nearly six million people are packed into about 250 square miles—230 times the average U.S. population density. It’s an Asian financial center, a major port on one of the world’s busiest shipping straits, and a tiny piece of prime real estate wedged between two giant, powerful neighbors, Indonesia and Malaysia. Singapore was part of Malaysia until 1965, when economic and racial tensions spurred its separation. But Singapore depends on Malaysia for most of its water and much of its food, and can’t afford to make mistakes or provoke its neighbors.

Singapore citizens’ bargain with their government: less individual freedom in return for First World living standards.

So Singapore’s government monitors its citizens closely, to make sure that individuals don’t harm the community. Inspectors check for water standing in each household’s pots, lest they furnish breeding sites for disease-transmitting mosquitoes. Smart-technology sensors measure (or will measure) the traffic on every street, the movements of every car, and the temperatures of and shadows cast by buildings. They also will track the water and electricity consumption of every household and will note the time whenever a household toilet is flushed. Americans may view such measures with horror, as George Orwell’s novel 1984 come true. But for Singapore’s citizens, it’s the bargain that they have made with their government: less individual freedom in return for First World living standards, health, and security.

Next consider Germany’s cities, also densely populated. Local governments have rules about the shapes and colors of tiles that Germans may use on their houses’ roofs, and about the sizes and ages of trees that they can or can’t cut down on their property. To obtain a fishing license, Germans must attend many hours of fishing classes, then pass a 60-question exam. Most Americans would bristle at such restrictions. But benefits to German communities include beautiful regional architecture , green cities, government support for the arts, and healthy fish populations.

At the opposite extreme comes my own city of Los Angeles, where rights of the individual property owner are prized as sacred. The result is a free-for-all, in which many individuals and communities suffer disadvantages. Almost any style of house is permissible; local architectural character is nonexistent. Tree cover is vanishing, temperatures are rising, and landowners’ excavated dirt and sprayed pesticides end up on neighbors’ property. To fish in the local bay waters, anyone can buy a fishing license—no questions asked—so of course fish populations decline.

For Hungry Minds

The outcomes of trade-offs differ for Singapore, Germany, and L.A. because different geographies and histories have led to different customs. Population density is highest in Singapore, intermediate in Germany, lowest in the United States (including California). China—whence the ancestors of most of Singapore’s population arrived—has had cities for five millennia, Germany for two millennia, the United States for just a few centuries. Chinese traditional farming is communal; Germans have close-packed individual farms; and U.S. frontier settlements had self-sufficient, widely scattered families. The cultural legacies of those differences live on today.

Another issue of urban life is the trade-off between social ties and anonymity. Traditional living arrangements still practiced today in rural areas of New Guinea, where I’ve been working since the 1960s, resemble those formerly practiced in pre-urban Western societies. New Guinea villagers live out their lives where they were born, constantly surrounded by lifelong friends and social support.

A first reaction of many lonely, urban Americans is: How heartwarmingly wonderful! When New Guinea villagers move to cities, they find themselves surrounded by strangers, their friends few or recent or scattered across the city. The frequent results are unhappy isolation, decline of social support, and proliferation of urban crime.

Still, we American city dwellers shouldn’t romanticize traditional village living arrangements. My New Guinea friends tell me that those arrangements are also socially suffocating, and limit individuals’ abilities to realize their potential. In New Guinea villages, everybody knows, constantly watches, and incessantly discusses what everybody else is doing.

As a result, a New Guinea friend who spent years living in a U.S. city loved it—because (as she told me) she could sit alone and read a newspaper in peaceful anonymity in a sidewalk café, without being importuned by fellow clan members asking her for money and bewailing their troubles. New Guineans have learned to appreciate the modern urban inventions of opaque bags and trouser pockets—because those inventions permit them to conceal things from neighbors and thereby to acquire small luxuries without becoming targets of village comment. Thus, New Guineans recognize drawbacks as well as heartwarming benefits of village life. They also understand the benefits, not just the pains, of urban anonymity.

It all comes down to compromises. As the world becomes increasingly urban, will all of us be forced to adopt more of Singapore’s solutions? If a government meter that records every flushing of your toilet is part of the price you’d have to pay for living in safety, health, affluence, and beautiful surroundings, what would you choose?

Another advantage of living in an urban area is that there is a huge number of jobs available and many multinational companies, small companies, big companies are present in the big cities. There are centers of trade and commerce and it is very easy for a person to find a job in the urban areas. On the other hand, villagers mostly do farming and the jobs are limited to seasonal jobs.

Though in terms of the technical factors the city life is way ahead of the village life, yet people consider village life more peaceful. There are also paved paths for walking and riding bicycles. On the flip side, villages have the worst transport systems. The main drive way may be well maintained, but other interlocking roads that penetrate through villages and farms are rarely tarmacked. These roads are impenetrable during the wet seasons when they become muddy.

Then, there is better communication in the cities. Most communication companies have all their equipment installed in cities, because of the high population which assures them of good return on their investments. They rarely install communication transmitters in the villages, which makes the communication network in rural areas very poor. Village folks have to rely on strong communication boosters from the cities, which are rarely reliable. They therefore have to look for areas with network before they can communicate, which makes the whole process tiring and frustrating. In the cities, communication networks are virtually everywhere even in the poorest neighborhoods.

Furthermore, the cities have security. Cities have police patrolling twenty four hours a day. Aside from that, there are CCTV cameras all over the city, which makes it easier to catch criminals and solve crimes. The 911 speed dial also assists in faster response rate from the police force, which is very essential during emergency cases. Due to low population density in the rural areas, the village folks are exposed to a lot of risks.

There are no advanced police forces in the villages, just a few sheriffs with poor equipment, who have to cater to all the people. The fact that the villages have poor communication systems is actually a challenge to the village folks during times of crisis, because they cannot alert the authorities in time.

Moreover, the city has a wide selection of career choices and business opportunities. This is the main reason why most people are abandoning villages in favor of cities. The city is basically a bubbling hub of commercial activities. There is so much more money in circulation in the cities than in the villages, which increases the prospects of prosperity. There are many career opportunities for both skilled and unskilled people.

Also, the high population in cities is very attractive to businessmen and increases the chances of businesses succeeding. The only viable economic activity with a higher likelihood of succeeding in the villages is farming. However, farming does not work much in their favor since they are just producers. They sell their commodities as raw goods to manufacturers, which does not fetch much in comparison to the big corporations that are raking in billions of dollars from processed foods.

There are also public amenities in the cities. The education system in cities are better with more skilled teachers and excellent facilities. Village schools are usually understaffed, because few teachers are willing to take their skills to the villages. There are also many hospitals and medical facilities throughout the cities with different practitioners, such as surgeons, doctors, nurses and psychiatrists.

Furthermore, the response rate of medical teams during emergencies is faster due to good communication and transport infrastructure. Villages rarely have more than one medical institution and they are usually understaffed with poor healthcare facilities. There are also banks, shopping centers, telephone, rest rooms, drinking fountains, just to name a few.

In addition, there are many entertainment and recreational venues in cities. The city life is always busy with entertainment spots, during the day and at night. Entertainment venues, such as nightclubs, cinemas, coffee shops and fast food restaurants make life more fulfilling and fun. There also recreational facilities, such as museums, parks and zoos, where people go to relax and enjoy. Aside from the occasional communal meetings, entertainment is almost nonexistent in the villages.

There are very few spots of entertainment, which makes life in the villages boring and slow. Another good thing about city life is privacy. It is quite ironic that the cities are more private than the villages, despite having millions of people living in one geographical region. In the cities, people do not go around snooping around other people’s affairs, even if they are neighbors. In the villages however, news spread like bushfire because they all know each other and everybody wants to stay abreast with what is going on in each person’s lives.

Also, there is integrations of cultures. Cities are basically metropolitan areas attracting people from all walks of life. As people come together, there is borrowing of cultures, which fosters unity and eradicates any form of biasness and prejudice. Only one group of people resides in the villages at a time, which limits their thinking and ability to accommodate foreign cultures and other worldly views. One of the things that flourishes in cities as a result of cultural diversity is food.

City folks have a wide selection of cuisines to choose from. They may visit hotels and stalls offering whichever food they wish to eat or they may order through phone calls and the meals are delivered to their doorsteps. Such things do not exist in the villages and the rural folks have to be contented with the few dishes they have.

Housing is also better in the city than in the rural. Houses in the city (Excluding the ghettos of course) have standard designs with good drainage and sewer system. Though the average city house is smaller in comparison to a village house, the fact remains that they are far more comfortable. City houses have Air Conditioner installed in them to moderate the temperatures inside.

Everything is automated- there are dishwashers for the utensils, vacuum cleaners for the floors, laundry machines for clothes, lawn mowers for the lawns, security systems to secure the houses, just to name a few. All these equipment are not present in the average village houses. In fact, most houses in the rural do not even have bathrooms inside the houses, due to unavailability of drainage and sewer systems.

To add on that, cities have state of the art technology that is always up-to-date with the current trends all over the world. Technology makes life far much easier for city dwellers than rural folks. With just a click of the button, city dwellers can get whatever they want. They may purchase anything online, they may order food using their cell phones or they may get uber by just activating an application in their phones.

Poor and outdated technology, coupled with lack on infrastructure is locking out villagers from the prospects of comfortable and easy life. Furthermore, the governments mostly keep into consideration the cities folks first when making budgets and policies. It is a known fact that most of the public funds are used in the development and maintenance of public infrastructure in urban centers. This explains why there is always more rapid change and growth in cities than in the rural areas.

The fact that there are so many opportunities in the cities means that every person can achieve their dreams, if they are willing to put in all the necessary work and perseverance. In the rural area, a person’s chances of getting out of poverty are very slim, because people generally rely on farming. So, if a person does not have land, then working on another person’s land cannot secure him/her the necessary wages to be able to purchase a parcel of land.

In conclusion, city life is generally better than village life because of convenience. In the city, you can get whatever you want and quickly. The village life is not bad, however there is the issue of scarcity. So many things are not present in the villages and village folks have to make regular trips to towns to shop, which is tiresome and time consuming. It goes without saying therefore that town folks would find it hard to survive in a rural setting. On the flipside however, the village folks will be intrigued by the fabulous lifestyle of the city and the world of opportunities that the city life offers.

City life is very modern life. There are many luxuries and comfortable amenities in the city’s life. The city is the most charming place that attracts people from rural areas.

In the city, many people live comfortably because of cultural, economic, and commercial facilities. Lifestyle in the town attracts people to migrate from rural to urban life.

This is because when you live in the city, you have easy access to social amenities, entertainment facilities, and excellent infrastructure. The charm of city life is the major reason for the top level of migration from rural areas. However, contrary to what people believe, living in the city has its pros and cons.

Undoubtedly, life in a large city is lovely to see, but the negative side behind it is much more terrifying. The noise and bustle, smoke and dust, the air of haste and anxiety stung the city life. A man living in the city life the most unpleasant. Accustomed to all his days, to quickly take his own life, he feels a stranger. He loses his hearing in constant noise and senses high voltage.

But a man born and raised in the city has completely unfamiliar feelings. He is used to this crowd and the “busy hum of people” and quickly adapts to the problems and complications that arise every day. Life is an exciting adventure for him, full of news and surprises at every turn.

With the increase in unemployment in rural areas and an increasing number of people with proper education, the population in large cities is growing day by day. More and more people are coming to cities to find opportunities in business, higher education, work, and specialist medical help.

The growing presence of international companies in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta attracts thousands of young people to look for jobs. The expansion of business opportunities also invites many people to the cities.

So, in the cities, noise and pollution are increasing day by day. Big cities are growing day by day from all sides, where hundreds of housing colonies are developing along with many business premises. So, older residents of these metropolitan choices to settle in outside areas to avoid the noise and pollution of the major town.

Despite all the problems of cities, people throughout their lives fighting for work in a buzzing environment. Everyone is busy. No one even has time to talk to a neighbor or relative. Everyone lives their own individual lives.

Social contacts are absent. The desire for money is increasing day by day. The value of the property rises. There is no value for life, and accidents happen everywhere every day. People strive for a breath of fresh air. They don’t have time to rest. They can’t sleep well because of tension at work and competition.

Everyone does their job in the fiercest competition, and honesty is very rare in big cities. People may cheat at any stage, so you also prefer to deceive others. It’s crazy for a race for false prestige. Everyone wishes to get the top by hook or cheating.

Treats are spreading in large cities. A duplicate of everything is available. Duplicate medicines, clothes, toys, machines, watches, cameras, spare parts, electronic equipment are available everywhere. It is challenging to find the original and reject the duplicate.

There is a strange attraction to life in cities that makes people stick to them. Employment and earning opportunities for bread are readily available. If you are a person to work and show excellence, enormous cities provide big careers for diligent professionals. They reach the top because there are many possibilities.

Advantages of City life

The first advantage of living in the city is access to electricity. Unlike many rural areas that do not have electricity, most homes in the city have electricity, that is convenient for many.

By living in the city, you have access to better roads and better means of transport that facilitate transport. Cities also have better shopping centers. A company in the town is more likely to grow compared to a company in a village.

There are more job opportunities in the city. This is because many industries and shopping centers are located here.

There are more and more educational institutions in the city. This leads to a top level of educational skills among the inhabitants of these areas compared to rural residents.

Live in the city also encourages cultural integration. This is because, in cities, people come from different regions and interact in the areas of work and residence. That is why cultural assimilation is strengthened there.

It’s also easy to get access to healthcare in the city. You can get better healthcare in the town because of most of the major hospitals and expert doctors are available there.

An apartment in the city will also provide access to entertainment. The city has many entertainment centers and various attractions such as game parks and museums.

Another advantage of living in a city is access to shopping centers. It is effortless to buy necessary things because shopping centers are in many available.

A living in the city is also beneficial because you gain access to technological progress. After developing unknown technology, people living in urban areas often have access to it first.

1. Traveling

The life in the city traveling is fantastic and comfortable. City roads are well concreted for vehicle traffic. There are no problems with running compared to the village.

2. Household objects

Each house electricity and pipelines connect in the city. It provides clean water services essential for life.

3. Drainage system

A sewage drainage system facilitates the city. This service also ensures road cleanliness and saves from diseases.

4. Cleanliness and sanitation

The city life is immaculate and sanitary. Looking at the clean facilities by a chief authority, which is more important for the cleanliness of the city.

5. Medical facility

Life in the city provides excellent medical service. There are many essential health centers for the checkup. In the emergency in the town, you do not have to reach far. All health facilities are available in nearby places. There are also qualified doctors for patient care.

6. Educational institutions in city

School services are more available in the city. Everyone wants an excellent school facility, and here, it provides a large institution and colleges for students. Here is also a student library facility. Library users are more significant in cities.

7. Business centers in city

It is usual for a business center for entrepreneurs to find in every city. Many people develop their skills to work in large industrial areas.

The problem of living in the city is that because of the level of unemployment in the town. People earn a living by crime.

Life in the city is also more expensive than being in the village. The cost of food, housing, water, and electricity is very high in the city compared to rural areas.

Another disadvantage of city life is the crowding of the streets. Because of many cars in the city, traffic is a problem, especially during rush hour when people go to and from work.

There is also a top level of pollution in the city. Air pollution is caused by industrialization and environmental pollution caused by poor waste disposal.

Sewage systems are also other unpleasant things about city life. For the top level of the population, many people use the same sewage system, which causes a blockage if it is not well maintained.

There are also overcrowding in the city. It makes walking on the streets difficult because you will probably bump into other people, that is uncomfortable.

When someone lives in a city, they also expose to noise. This is because of many entertainment centers and many vehicles, industries, etc.

Another disadvantage of city life is that land is expensive, which is why most people accommodate on rent, that affects their finance. It is also straightforward to lose culture in the city due to exposure to various cultures.

Some people in the city may not be aware of pollution. Because of these people, the city is polluting. Three types of pollution spoil the town, such as air pollution, water pollution, and noise pollution.

1. Garbage is spreading all over in city

We find rubbish that throws the trash on the road of cities. Some people are entirely careless about taking care of the cleaning country. The use in waste increases dirtiness the country because there are fewer sanitary conditions.

2. Mosquitoes spread through a dirty drain in city

Mosquitoes spread in many areas because of vast and cluttered waste. This is the major reason for the spread of diseases by mosquitoes. Many people die because of a mosquito bite like dengue, plagued by rats, etc.

3. Living cost is very high

Living cost in the city is very high as compare to village areas. Most of the things like house rent, water bill, electricity bill, food are outrageous price in city.

Living in the city can be great if you have a stable source of income. However, a life in a town without a job can be tough, which can lead to people choosing illegal ways of getting money. Therefore, it is advisable to move to the city with a stable job or business idea that you can develop.

Nowadays, the rural area is developing. Thanks to numerous programs that have been undertaking with due diligence. But the advantages of city life are much more significant than in rural areas, which is more encouraged.

There are many advantages about living in the city. The city allows a person to be near lots of stores, people, and jobs with short distances to get from one place to another. Living in the city can be exciting because there is always something going on. This is why living in a city is better because city provides more entertainment/recreation options, have more and wider variety of career opportunities, and host much more diverse populations.

Life in a city is better because there are many recreational opportunities. There are more opportunities to learn about arts and history due to abundance of museums, theaters, and public exhibitions. If we are in New York, there is no shortage of musicals and Broadway shows near the Times Square many of whom have been performing for years now due to their immense popularity. The most popular Broadway shows such as The Lion King, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Mamma Mia!, Mary Poppins, and The Phantom of the Opera attract both locals and tourists, many of whom are foreigners. and When we have knowledge on a wide range of topics, we are better able to make sense of the world around us and it also helps us keep interested in knowledge. San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art owns works by several renowned artists such as René Magritte, Jeff Koons, Piet Mondrian, and Marcel Duchamp (Gupta and Leach). In New York, we can find a museum of literally everything such as American Folk Art Museum, Queens Botanical Garden, Sony Wonder Technology Lab, and Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art (Cross). One can find food from almost every country in big cities like San Francisco and New York. In additional, there are parks that provide escape from the stress of daily lives as well as movie theaters where the latest movies are screened. Then there are cities like Orlando and Tokyo which have Disneyland, often called the happiest place on the earth. Life may be busier in cities but cities also provide lot more recreational options to residents. Cities are bustling with life, every single second of the day.

The probability of finding a career line that matches one’s skills and interests is higher in a city. Each one of us has amazing creativity potential even though our potentials may lie in different areas. Individuals as well as the overall society benefit when there is a good match between an individual’s profession and his strengths. Someone who is a great musician may not be equally good at business and similarly, a great painter might not have been good at academics. The far greater choices of professions in a city minimize the loss of creativity talent among us. Aspiring artists, musicians, computer programmers, and painters may find abundant opportunities in big cities to pursue their interests and interact with like-minded people. Another benefit of living in a city is that we constantly meet educated people from different backgrounds and are exposed to new ideas. This improves our thinking quality motivates us to set higher goals. Cities not only host some of the world’s finest universities such as Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and MIT but also companies that are at the leading edge of innovation such as Apple Inc., Google, and Johnson & Johnson. The companies also want to locate in cities because the environment is conducive to innovation and they have no trouble finding the right talent. When we think of digital technology, we often think of Silicon Valley and when we think of financial sector, New York is the first city that comes to mind. Similarly, New York is also closely associated with media companies, fashion industry, and live arts such as musical theaters and broadways.

City life is also better because cities have more diverse populations in terms of cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. When we meet people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, we become better aware of our biases and stereotypes (Axner). Meeting people from backgrounds different than ours also help us expand our thinking horizon as help us become more respectful of differences. Thus, it is no surprise that big cities like New York and San Francisco often lead the struggle for a better society. San Francisco has a rich tradition of fighting for marriage equality, fair pay, civil rights, and environmental causes (Harris). In New York, the population is so diverse that locals have created mini versions of their original countries such as Little Italy and Little China. The U.S. will continue to become increasingly diverse due to globalization and, thus, living in a city where we have greater opportunities to meet people from other cultures will better prepare us for the future challenges.

Those who argue that country life is better than a city life claim that there is too much materialism in cities. They also claim that almost everyone knows each other in a country town while in cities, people rarely even know their neighbors. They also argue that family values are stronger in country towns than cities. In addition, people overwork in cities and forget to enjoy life. They also express concerns that our traditional values have been disappearing in cities while they remain strong in country towns.

The supporters of country life do not realize that capitalist system usually results in more vibrant economies because it gives incentives to people to work harder. Cities lead the progress in any country and unless people believe they can have better lives, they won’t be motivated to work harder. The opponents also tend to forget that cities have considerably larger populations than country towns which is why it is easier to know almost every community member in country towns. Another reason is that people in country towns sometimes live in the same place their whole lives while this is rarely the case for many people in big cities. People in cities also move around more due to professional reasons and, thus, they often have to live away from family members and relatives.

The supporters of country life also do not realize that people may have different definitions of fun. Just because someone works a lot doesn’t necessarily mean he/she is not enjoying his/her life. Some people enjoy their work more than anything which explains why famed investor Warren Buffet refuses to retire despite being the second richest person in America. Similarly, Rupert Murdoch is a multi-billionaire who owns some of the most lucrative media companies in the U.S. such as Fox News and yet he continues to work though he could have easily retired long time ago. Similarly, traditional values are stronger in country towns because they tend to resist modernism to a greater extent than cities which usually lead the progress towards future and are more willing to evolve with time.

People like city life and country life for different reasons but most people like city life because cities offer much greater variety of experiences. Cities have more diverse populations, the population on the average has higher academic credentials, and there is greater acceptance and appreciation of differences. In addition, cities also lead the progress in sciences and arts due to an environment that encourages creativity and productive interactions.

I was once told that the challenge of making successful feminist porn is that the thing women desire most is freedom.

If that’s the case, one might consider my life over the past few years to be extremely pornographic — even without all the actual sex that occurred. It definitely has the makings of a fantasy, if we allowed for fantasies starring single, childless women on the brink of turning 50.

It’s not just in enjoying my age that I’m defying expectations. It’s that I’ve exempted myself from the central things we’re told give a woman’s life meaning — partnership and parenting. I’ve discovered that despite all the warnings, I regret none of those choices.

Indeed, I am enjoying them immensely. Instead of my prospects diminishing, as nearly every message that gets sent my way promises they will — fewer relationships, less excitement, less sex, less visibility — I find them widening. The world is more available to me than it’s ever been.

Saying so should not be radical in 2024, and yet, somehow it feels that way. We live in a world whose power structures continue to benefit from women staying in place. In fact, we’re currently experiencing the latest backlash against the meager feminist gains of the past half-century. My story — and those of the other women in similar shoes — shows that there are other, fulfilling ways to live.

It is disconcerting to enjoy oneself so much when there is so much to assure you to expect the opposite, just as it is strange to feel so good against a backdrop of so much terribleness in the world. But with age (hopefully) comes clarity.

Fifty is a milestone. And the fact my 50th birthday lands on or around some other significant 50ths has brought some things into focus. Last year was the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This year is the 50th of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which may be less well known but remains significant: It allowed women for the first time to have bank accounts and credit cards in their own name, not needing a male signature.

That my birth date landed between the passing of these two landmark laws makes it easier for me to see that the life I’m living is a result of women having authority over both their bodies and their finances. I represent a cohort of women who lead lives that do not require us to ask permission or seek approval. I have availed myself of all the choices available to me, and while the results come with their own set of risks, they have been enormously satisfying.

The timing of my birthday also helps me see the violent rollback of women’s rights happening right now as a response to the independence these legal rights afforded women. Forget about the horror of being alone and middle-aged — there is nothing more terrifying to a patriarchal society than a woman who is free. That she might be having a better time without permission or supervision is downright insufferable.

My entry into middle age certainly had the makings of an unpleasant story.

Like many, I spent the early months of the pandemic by myself. It was the type of solitary confinement that popular science, and certain men with platforms, enjoy reminding us will be the terrible future that awaits a woman who remains single for too long. I went untouched by anyone. Unsmelled, too, which you might think is a strange thing to note, but it’s an even stranger thing to experience. Unseen except by the building exterminator and the remaining doormen of the Upper West Side who gave distant friendly greetings on my evening walks around Covid-empty New York.

Alone, unmarried, childless, past my so-called prime. A caricature, culture would have it, a fringe identity; a tragedy or a punchline, depending on your preference. At the very least a cautionary tale.

By August 2021, I was desperate — not for partnership but for connection. I bought a ticket to Paris, a place where I’d spent much of my free time before the pandemic and where I had a group of friends.

Paris, I reminded myself, prioritizes pleasure. I dove in. Cheese, wine, friendships, sex — and repeat.

At first it was shocking. I was ill prepared to get what I wanted, what it seemed I had summoned. There were moments when I wondered whether I should be ashamed. I had also never felt so free and so fully myself. I felt no shame or guilt, only the thrill that came with the knowledge I was exercising my freedom.

These days, generally speaking, there is little in cinema or literature, let alone the online world, to suggest that when you are a woman alone (forget about a middle-aged woman), things will go your way, as I have often experienced.

There have been better times. In the 1980s, sitcoms were stacked with starring women for whom men were a minor-character concern — “Designing Women,” “Murphy Brown,” “The Golden Girls” — all of which, if they premiered today (and that’s a big if), would feel radical. Later there was “Girlfriends.” Even “Sex and the City,” with its often regressive marriage plotting, remains surprisingly modern in its depictions of adult friendship and sexual mores. In each case, just as it looked as if these narratives might begin to fully take root in the real world, the women largely went back inside (or into body bags, in the case of many “Law & Order” plotlines). By the early aughts we were housewives again, real and imagined.

I suspect that a lot of this backlash is connected to the terror that men experienced at discovering that they are less necessary to women’s fulfillment than centuries of laws and stories have allowed them to believe. That terror is abundantly apparent today: From Harrison Butker’s commencement speech suggesting that women may find more fulfillment in marriage and children than in having a career, to the Supreme Court once again debating access to abortion to the push to roll back no-fault divorce laws: All are efforts to return women to a place where others can manage their access to … well, just about everything.

It’s in this light that my enjoyment begins to feel radical. Come fly with me. There’s no fear here.

Not a thing to do, but take a trip down memory lane! That ’70s Show managed to cultivate some of the most iconic moments in pop culture history. It’s also responsible for catapulting its younger stars Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Wilmer Valderrama and Danny Masterson into the spotlight. Created by Mark Brazill, Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, That ’70s Show centered on a group of teens growing up in the suburbs of Wisconsin in the 1970s. It ran for seven seasons on Fox from 1998 to 2006. Debra Jo Rupp, Kurtwood Smith, Don Stark, Tanya Roberts, Lisa Robin Kelly and Tommy Chong also appeared on the series. “[We] had no idea what was ahead of us, or if it would even last … but we knew it was gonna be fun,” Valderrama reflected via Instagram in August 2018, while celebrating the show’s 20-year anniversary. “We spent 8 years and 200 episodes together, we traveled the world … [and] we grew up together. We were a family, and will always be.” Grace, the series lead, and Kutcher both left the series after seven seasons. Though Josh Meyers stepped in during their absence, both actors returned for the series finale in 2006. The success of That ’70s Show also led to the release of That ’80s Show in 2002. The spinoff series featured Glenn Howerton of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame in the early days of his career. The sitcom was short-lived as it was canceled that year after one season. Despite That ’70s Show’s continued popularity today through cable reruns and Netflix streaming, fans shouldn’t expect to see the series revived in the same fashion as Roseanne and Full House. Grace previously hinted that the likelihood of the entire cast returning for a revival is slim. “That cast has gone on to such amazing things. Each person individually has had such great success,” he explained to Newsweek in September 2018. “I would absolutely love to do it to spend time with those guys, but I don’t want to think about it too much. America’s dirtiest city is revealed — and it’s not NYC or anywhere near the north

Do you think New York’s filthy sidewalks, gross subway cars and rat infestations make it America’s dirtiest city? You’re in for quite a surprise.

A recent study by LawnStarter has crowned Houston, Texas, as the nation’s dirtiest city — bumping Newark, New Jersey from the top spot.

New York City, despite its notorious grime, didn’t even crack the top 10. It landed in 12th place. While the Big Apple dodged the title of dirtiest, it’s still grappling with its trash and pest problems.

Houston’s new dubious honor stems from its terrible air quality, infrastructure woes and a staggering number of pests invading homes.

LawnStarter’s sister site PestGnome pulled data showing Houston has the worst cockroach problem, with the city crawling with the creepy critters.

It’s not just Houston; southern cities seem to be a haven for cockroaches. San Antonio, Texas and Tampa, Florida, join Houston in the top three for cockroach infestations.

If cockroaches aren’t your nightmare, steer clear of Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore. These cities top the list for rodent-infested homes.

Despite California’s hefty spending on cleaning efforts, several of its cities still rank poorly. San Bernardino, notorious as the “armpit” of California, ranks fourth dirtiest due to atrocious air quality.

Riverside and Ontario, also in the LA metro area, share this dismal air status, now plagued by pollution-heavy warehouses that have replaced orange groves and vineyards.

San Francisco, however, shines as a cleaner gem in California. With a $72.5 million street cleaning spree in 2019 and an additional $16.7 million budget in 2023, it’s among the cleaner half of US cities.

But this doesn’t account for the rising homeless and drug epidemic facing the city.

Dirty air isn’t the only issue — drinking water contamination is rampant in the southwest. Except for Salt Lake City, every major southwest city violated the Safe Drinking Water Act in 2020. Las Vegas, ranking 19th dirtiest overall, has the most unsafe water in the region.

Ohioans have a particular knack for littering cigarette butts. With five Ohio cities boasting the highest share of smokers, the state is battling an onslaught of discarded cigarettes, despite local campaigns urging residents to kick the habit.

Surprisingly, many of the cleanest cities are coastal, with Virginia Beach topping the list.

However, being near water isn’t a cleanliness guarantee — Fremont, California, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, also rank among the most pristine cities despite their inland locations.

The small town life beckons for many as Americans continue to flee big cities

In 2022, places like Manhattan and Atlanta that had become ghost towns during the pandemic began seeing more people moving back than leaving, raising hopes for a resurgence of the nations’ largest cities.

But the latest U.S. Census Bureau figures show the revival was short-lived. Americans have continued to flee large metro areas in massive numbers as the remote work shift sparked by COVID becomes entrenched and the allure of more affordable midsize cities and smaller towns grows.

Big cities are still seeing modest population gains because of a surge in international immigrants but at a slower rate than before the health crisis, Goldman Sachs said in a recent research note. And they’re losing the battle to keep and attract U.S. residents, a development that started before the pandemic but was magnified by the health crisis.

“Maybe there isn’t going to be a rebound,” says Hamilton Lombard, a demographer at the University of Virginia. “Maybe the rebound is over.”

For big cities, there is a small silver lining.

Where are home prices rising the fastest?

Stronger population growth in smaller towns has led to a faster rise in home prices compared to the pre-COVID trend and a slower housing price pickup in large cities, the Goldman analysis shows. That has modestly narrowed the yawning gap in home values between large and small cities, at least in some areas, possibly drawing some residents to densely populated metro areas or prodding some renters in those cities to buy houses rather than bolt to smaller communities.

Are people moving away from large cities?

After a prolonged decline in the 1960s and 1970s, large cities were revitalized in the 1990s as young professionals were drawn to their cultural and social amenities. But starting in the mid-2010s, cities again began losing residents to suburbs and smaller metro areas because of skyrocketing costs and a desire by some Millennials entering their 30s to start families and buy larger homes, according to Lombard and Adam Kamins, a regional economist at Moody’s Analytics.

In the three years before the pandemic, counties in metro areas with at least 1 million residents lost a total 200,000 or so residents annually to other regions, after figuring both people moving in and leaving, according to the Goldman report. After COVID, those losses vaulted to 750,000 in 2021, 650,000 in 2022 and 550,000 in 2023, according to Goldman and Census data. The numbers reflect annual changes through July of each year.

A separate study by Lombard shows the domestic migration losses were concentrated in the largest metro areas with more than 4 million residents. Those cities shed a total 400,000 residents annually before the pandemic and have lost 820,000, 707,000 and 591,000 residents, respectively, over the past three years.

Where is everyone moving in 2024?

Last year, about 266,000 of the big city refugees moved to metro areas with populations of 250,000 to 1 million and about 291,000 moved to areas with populations under 250,000. That made those small towns the nation’s top destination for domestic migrants for the first time in decades, Lombard says.

In 2023, the New York City metro area lost 204,000 residents; Los Angeles, 119,000; and Chicago, 64,000, according to Census and Moody’s.

Meanwhile, the Greenville, South Carolina area (pop. 975,000) gained 17,000 dwellers; Lakeland, Florida (pop. 818,000) added 30,000; and Yuma, Arizona, (pop. 209,000) picked up 4,000.

Kamins is heartened that the big city migration losses have moderated each of the past three years, adding that more young adults are moving to many large cities than leaving and they’re departing other cities at a slower clip.

But Lombard notes the flight from large cities is still much greater than it was before the pandemic and it likely will mostly flatline at current levels in coming years.

Is remote work declining?

Companies’ return-to-office mandates the past couple of years have helped slow defections from large cities. But the share of U.S. employees working from home at least some of the time has stabilized at 20% to 25%, Goldman says, below the 47% pandemic peak but well above the pre-COVID average of about 3%.

Meanwhile, Lombard says, “Far more people would like to live in smaller towns” because of the lower cost of living as well as "recreation, peace and quiet, clean air.”

The shift has been a boon for towns like Martinsville, Virginia, (pop. 14,000), known as the world’s “sweatpants capital” when its textile mills were humming but among the state’s poorest areas in the 2010s, Lombard says in the report.

Last year, however, the Martinsville area attracted the second most domestic migrants among all Virginia’s metro areas and its wage growth is among the state’s strongest, the report said. In 2021, Starbucks opened its first store in Martinsville.

Since 2020, Starbucks has closed hundreds of underperforming urban shops and “opened hundreds of other locations in small towns across the country that are attracting new residents,” Lombard’s report says.

Will 2024 be a better time to buy a house?

Large cities, meanwhile, are benefitting from less of a pickup in home price gains than their small town counterparts when compared to before the pandemic, Goldman says. From 2015 to 2019, home prices increased at an annual rate of 5.3% in cities with at least 1 million residents, a pace that rose to 8% from 2020 through March 2024, according to a Goldman analysis of Zillow figures.

But in towns with 5,000 to 20,000 residents, annual price gains accelerated from 3.5% before COVID to 8.6% in recent years, a much sharper acceleration.

A home purchase, of course, is still far more expensive in larger cities but the gap is narrowing in some areas.

From early 2019 through April 2024, typical home prices grew 15.3% in the Boston area to $750,000 and 54% in Myrtle Beach to $308,000, according to Zillow. As a result, since 2019, the home price gap between the two areas has narrowed by a modest $8,000.

But if the trend continues, the affordability gap between big cities and smaller communities could close further, Lombard says.

The popular downtown sculpture known as “The Gulls of Salt Lake City” is finally slated to rise from its boxes and take wing again.

The towering bronze-on-nickel depiction of wheeling sea gulls in flight, created by the late California artist Tom Van Sant , was long a fixture on Salt Lake City’s Main Street, attached to what was the Prudential Federal Savings building at 115 S. Main Street.

Its immense metal birds and connecting rods remain dismantled and in storage since the artwork’s 2014 removal to make way for demolitions and subsequent construction of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater, which opened in 2016.

Almost a decade later, the city Redevelopment Agency’s latest proposed $84.7 million budget includes spending $55,323 to explore reinstalling the dramatic sculpture somewhere on that same city block.

The agency is considering several potential locations, according RDA Director Danny Walz, including somewhere on McCarthy Plaza on Regent Street or adjacent to the Eccles Theater. The new cash — if approved by the City Council — would cover initial design and engineering “for how we can make those happen,” Walz said.

Following that initial analysis, the RDA, Salt Lake County and the Salt Lake City Arts Council will reportedly all have a say in where the sculpture gets re-displayed.

“I’m really excited,” City Council member Chris Wharton said. “They’ve been gone for a long time and as we’ve found out, it’s not just me who really loves those.”

History, including gulls gone missing

“The Gulls of Salt Lake City” was privately commissioned in 1962 and Van Sant, who died in 2023 , produced 100 light-weight birds in several poses using electroplated nickel and bronze, with stainless-steel connecting rods.

In collaboration with the Prudential building’s chief architect, William Pereira, the sculpture was incorporated into its original design. In 1964, strings of the gulls were installed vertically across the building’s full 120-foot-tall facade, extending from a sunken garden below ground to the tower’s apex.

“The Gulls” would become a memorable fixture for downtown visitors and tourists over the next 50 years.

“One almost gets the feeling they’re actually alive and are rising purposefully skyward,” read one jubilant newspaper insert published for the Prudential building’s grand opening.

The building saw modifications in 2001 due to structural issues and somewhere around 35 of the art display’s birds located below ground level got chopped off when that part of the tower was eliminated.

According to an RDA spokesperson, city officials have since discovered that leftover birds were handed out as souvenirs to contractors and others who did the work.

“There’s some still floating around,” said the agency’s Amanda Greenland, who added one gull had turned up in a pawn shop and another was featured at a ranch home in Saratoga Springs.

“They’re just kind of scattered,” Greenland said, “which is a bummer.”

The RDA bought the Prudential building in 2013 in its pursuit of constructing the Eccles Theater and the remaining gulls and supporting structures were carefully removed and put away in cardboard boxes for safekeeping — with an official promise they would someday reemerge.

‘Just grateful’

Reinstallation of the art, however, was then “sort of put on hold,” Greenland said, as RDA officials monitored patterns of public usage of the remade Block 70, where the 2,500-seat Eccles Theater, Regent Street Plaza and other amenities added as part of its redevelopment now stand.

Greenland said the RDA’s up-to-date hand count tallied 58 birds, all safely kept at an undisclosed, city-owned location.

Seen up close, she said, “there are different variations of them in flight — some with wings really spread, some with their mouths open — which is really cool.”

The metal birds are tarnished and dirty, having been stashed after being taken down, Greenland said, and will likely undergo a restorative refresh before being put up again.

Van Sant, a prolific and prominent painter, sculptor, cartographer, teacher and innovative kite designer, died March 6, 2023 at age 92 in Guadalajara. He completed more than 60 public murals and sculptures in his lifetime, according to his obituary , many of which are now displayed in airports, civic centers and corporate buildings around the world.

Van Sant designed and built “The Gulls,” installing it with the assistance of master welder Timothy Smith. In a 2014 interview, the artist told The Salt Lake Tribune that “The Gulls” came to be “one of my first large architectural [projects].”

“I connected all those birds, on scaffolds in February, with snow on the planks,” Van Sant said. “I wasn’t scared until I got right to the last ones” on the top floor.

He also said he was flattered that the sculpture had been saved 50 years after it was installed — and even after the building it was originally designed for got reduced to rubble.

“I’m just grateful,” Van Sant said, “they’ve served this half-century of service.”

Greenland said the RDA and Salt Lake City Arts Council are currently working on an agreement to loan three of the gulls to Cypress College in Santa Monica for a retrospective of Van Sant’s work in September.
