The Most Important Leadership Competencies, According to Leaders Around the World

They’re all hard to improve because they run counter to our instincts.

Research over the past few decades has shown us that the most important leadership qualities are centered around soft skills and emotional intelligence. But do these skills point to deeper competencies? A survey of 195 leaders from more than 30 global organizations suggests that there are five major themes of competencies that strong leaders exhibit:

  • High ethical standards and providing a safe environment
  • Empowering individuals to self-organize
  • Promoting connection and belonging among employees
  • Open to new ideas and experimentation
  • Committed to the professional and intellectual growth of employees

While many of these competencies may seem obvious, they are difficult for leaders to master because to do so would require them to act against their nature. Individuals are not hardwired to relinquish control or be open to small failures. The ability to actively improve these competencies should be a priority for leaders.

What makes an effective leader? This question is a focus of my research as an organizational scientist, executive coach, and leadership development consultant. Looking for answers, I recently completed the first round of a study of 195 leaders in 15 countries over 30 global organizations. Participants were asked to choose the 15 most important leadership competencies from a list of 74. I’ve grouped the top ones into five major themes that suggest a set of priorities for leaders and leadership development programs. While some may not surprise you, they’re all difficult to master, in part because improving them requires acting against our nature.

How to Write a Leadership Essay

Like every other essay, this paper has an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion summarizing your thoughts. (1) The most important part of the introduction is the final sentence,  aka  a thesis statement. That’s where you state your claim to prove or develop in your leadership essay.

Each body paragraph should correspond to the purpose of your essay. To ensure you don’t stray from the aim you’ve established in the thesis statement, write the topic sentences for all your paragraphs in the outline . In simple words, write the first sentence of every paragraph to define its development in advance and see if you cover everything you need.

Its most essential element is thesis restatement or the first sentence of that paragraph. It’s not just paraphrasing your thesis; it’s also considering the new information you’ve discovered while writing the essay.

It might seem like a good idea to create a thesis statement and thesis restatement right off the bat. However, you’ll find yourself with more refreshing ideas after completing all the research and thinking necessary for the introduction and each body paragraph.

Decide on a structure; format accordingly

Even if your essay about leadership seems not so formal, and you can use personal pronouns, you still need a clear structure.

The best way to write any academic paper is to keep your introduction and conclusion as short as possible. (But no shorter than three sentences and four lines of text).

Strong leadership abilities are necessary to ensure the success of any activity performed by a team. Leadership refers to a process through which one person uses the help and support of others towards achieving a particular goal or task. For one to be a truly effective leader, he/she must posses some leadership skills. Only then can one interact better with his followers and hence foster productivity. In this paper, I shall analyze some of the skills expected of a leader and evaluate how they apply in my leadership style.

The most important skill that a leader should have is the ability to identify his/ her team. Team identity is of great importance because it enables a leader to know who is on a team and the purpose of the team (Adair, 2010). Understanding a team’s mode of operation enables the leader to make decisions that are considerate to all members need’s thereby instilling morale and boost team spirit.

Motivational skills are among the core attributes that a leader must posses. Motivation is defined as a “process of stimulating people to action to accomplish desired goals” (Kondalkar 2002, p.245).

Bearing in mind the fact that the leader is tasked with marshaling the organization’s resources to accomplish some organizational goal, it can be rightfully stated that part of the role of the leader is to motivate his staff to achieve certain desired goals. As such, an exemplary leader must possess motivational skills to ensure that the employees have a high degree of commitment in their performance.

Similarly, communication skills are of great importance to a leader. According to Greene and Burleson (2003) communication is arguably the corner stone on which any successful relationship, be it business or personal, is built. As such, a great leader should be able to effectively communicate the organizational goals, mission, vision and regulations to his/her subordinates. In so doing, the leader has a guarantee that set tasks shall be executed effectively and efficiently. This ensures that the organization works towards success.

In addition, Adair (2010) asserts that a great leader should possess conflict resolution skills. In all organizations, there arise contentious issues which elicit different reactions from the organization members at some point in time. How these issues are diffused may spell out the difference between the subsequent success and failure of the organization. Having conflict resolution skills can play a crucial role in ensuring that the crises or contention is managed in a diplomatic manner.

On the same note, a great leader should be flexible. By this I mean that a leader should be aware of his/her employee’s emotions and traits and consider them while making decisions. Disregarding these aspects may invariably lead to the failure of a team and subsequently, the organization.

In regard to the above skills, I often fall short when it comes to motivating fellow colleagues. This is mainly due to the fact that I do not interact well with others and I cannot eloquently express myself while under stress. This is most disturbing since communication and motivation are core attributes that can be used to promote team work.

Regardless of these shortcomings, I believe that I can improve on these skills, thereby ensuring that I become a better leader in the future. Leadership seminars are seen as one of the way through which people can be empowered.

Conflict management, communication and motivational skills can be gained through such seminars thus equipping an individual with ways and means of how to deal with issues arising from workplace interactions. Adoption of a policy of openness to dissimilarity can further act in the good of workplace communication.

This paper set out to investigate what effective leadership consists of in business and organizations setting. To this end, the paper has highlighted the skills expected from good leadership and subsequently articulated how the skills of an effective leader impact on the organization.

It has been seen that the adoption of an effective leadership skills in an organization will yield to higher productivity which will subsequently result in the attainment of the organizational goals of increased productivity. From the discussions forwarded in this paper, it has been noted that a lack of these leadership skills can lead to lack of focus and generally unmotivated workers hence lowers profitability of the entire organization.

Ensure that you outline the measures taken to alleviate the problems you identified. For example, you may have noticed that there is underwhelming participation of female students in STEM-related courses at your local university.

You identify that this is an issue that you can leverage to encourage female participation in the STEM fields . Your next course of action would involve writing a letter to your university’s admissions team, suggesting that you would like to start a club or organisation centred on female empowerment and participation in the STEM fields.

The obstacle lies in getting female students on campus to participate in such programmes. This can be done by advocating for present-day female engineers, scientists and those involved in the technology sector, which encourages female students to see a bright prospect in their future should they follow the footsteps of other female influencers in the STEM fields.

But one thing is certain: A great leader must have certain qualities that make him great. And such great qualities rarely develop in a man. It requires a proper environment and the call of time.

Some of the important qualities of an ideal leader have been described below:

  • A good leader must have the ability to take the correct decision at the perfect moment. There are times when one has to make a decision instantly. Without the ability to identify the correct moment and proper decision, no one can be a good leader.
  • A leader has to be determined. He should have the determination to follow his decision unwaveringly.
  • A leader must have full command over his followers. Without being able to convince his followers to follow his decision, he cannot be a successful leader.
  • An ideal leader invariably has the speaking ability. A strong, forceful, and convincing speech can make people follow him without any doubt.
  • A leader must be compassionate to his followers.
  • A leader should be well-informed about the strengths and weaknesses of his team and should take corrective measures to overcome those weaknesses.
  • A leader should be honest to himself as well as to his followers.
  • A leader should be truthful. Everybody hates a liar. So, no liar can be a good leader and earn the respect of his followers.
  • A good leader should be sincere in his effort. Without sincerity, he will not be convincing to people.
  • Courage is one thing a good leader must-have. Without having courage a person cannot command the respect of his followers.

There are many other virtues and qualities a person needs to have to be a good leader. Some of them are courtesy, perseverance, good behavior, moral character, punctuality, patriotism, sacrificing attitude, and so on. To be a great leader a person has to try to acquire these qualities.

Question: I recently started work in a new department. Just as I was becoming proficient at my job, the lead on my team announced her retirement in nine months. How can I best prepare to assume her duties in the interim? – L

Answer: Your lead’s retirement announcement can be a terrific opportunity to develop new skills and demonstrate your ability to take on new tasks and responsibilities. A nine-month period is plenty of time to learn someone else’s role. Having this much time is not common. Retiring employees often want to ensure they’re leaving the job in good hands, so they’re typically cooperative with their replacements to help ensure continuity and smoothness in the transition of their job duties. There are several steps you can take to be prepared to step in:

  • Understand your lead’s role: Spend as much time as possible shadowing her. Observe her daily tasks, decision-making processes, and how she handles different situations. Don’t hesitate to ask about the reasoning behind her actions and decisions. This will help you understand the nuances of the role.
  • Expand your knowledge and skills: Determine what skills and knowledge are crucial for your lead’s role. These might include technical skills, industry knowledge, or management techniques. Ensure all processes, procedures, and essential information are well-documented. This will be invaluable when you need to refer to it later. Focus on developing any deficient areas identified through training. Gradually start taking on some of your lead’s duties. This hands-on experience will help you build confidence and allow your colleague to provide feedback while she’s still employed.
  • Continue to build strong relationships: Work to strengthen your relationships with team members and other departments. Consider asking for feedback from your lead and other colleagues. Use this feedback to improve and adjust your approach as necessary. Your approachability and willingness to collaborate will make the transition smoother for everyone involved and help you gain valuable allies across the organization.
  • Help create a transition plan: Work with your lead to create a formal transition plan outlining key responsibilities, important deadlines, and any training you need to complete. Establish clear milestones to track your progress to ensure you’re on track to fully assume her duties when the time comes. Make sure you ask any outstanding questions before her retirement. This includes clarifying expectations and understanding any challenges you might face.
  • Maintain a positive attitude : Approach this opportunity with positivity. Your desire to succeed is clear from your question, and with preparation and determination, you’ll be ready to step into the lead's shoes when the time comes. First, let me applaud your efforts to be professional and proactive about your recent feedback. If you’re not meeting with your manager regularly, you may want to suggest that. Regular meetings keep the lines of communication open while providing an opportunity to ensure your goals and priorities align with your manager’s and the organization’s.

Start by breaking down the feedback into specific, actionable items. Determine what success looks like for each area. Make your goals SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). Assess what you need to improve, and consider additional training, courses, or shadowing a co-worker.

If you need to improve time management, set a goal to meet all deadlines for the next quarter by using calendar reminders and productivity tools.

Seek a mentor within the organization who excels in the areas you need to improve. Consider external courses, webinars, or workshops to aid your development.

Provide a written update to your manager detailing what you’ve accomplished and what your current focus is. This keeps your manager informed without requiring constant meetings. Create specific milestones to track your progress. Ensure these milestones are spread out enough to allow for meaningful progress, but frequent enough to keep you accountable. After completing a significant task or project, ask for feedback on what went well and where you could improve.

Arrange a follow-up meeting a few weeks after your review to discuss your action plan and seek initial feedback. Use these meetings to discuss what’s working, your challenges, and how you plan to overcome them. Be open to adjusting your plan in response to your manager’s feedback and any new insights you gain.

Regularly reflect on your progress and be honest with yourself about areas that still need improvement. Demonstrate your commitment to professional growth by taking initiative and showing you value and acting on feedback.
