Creativity Meets Critical Thinking

Department of english & literary arts, study literature as a site of possibility.

The Department of English & Literary Arts connects historical context to contemporary innovations across writing, research and scholarship. Our faculty, graduate students and undergraduates come together to spark intellectual curiosity and feed literary creation.

Undergraduate English students gain access to leading writers, critics and scholars across diverse fields of study who connect classroom learning to professional experience in editing, publishing, research and creative writing.

Graduate students in the master’s and doctoral programs develop their scholarly and creative interests through seminars and workshops, as well as tutorials and colloquia aimed at in-depth study, teaching mentorship and professional development. Creative writers can serve as readers and editorial staff at Denver Quarterly, a leading voice in avant-garde and experimental writing since 1966.

Degree Programs

Undergraduates can major or minor in English & Literary Arts, with options for distinction and honors in the major. Concentrations in literary studies, English education or creative writing allow majors more fully to develop their interest in a particular subfield.

Graduate students can pursue an MA in our flexible literary studies concentration or develop expertise through our doctoral program in English & Literary Arts. PhD students choose between a concentration in literary studies or creative writing, with further options for writers to specialize in poetry or prose.

Explore Programs

Like literature classes, the creative writing courses at DU are eclectic, interesting and as diverse as the people teaching them. As every instructor approaches the material with their own collection of passions and curiosities, no two sections of creative writing class are the same. Emelia Kamadulski (BA '21) English & Literary Arts
I have been encouraged here to look at my scholarly writing through a creative lens, and at my creative writing through a scholarly one. For me, this has broadened my understanding of what it is possible to study, to think and to write. Zeeshan Reshamwala PhD Candidate, Literary Studies
There has often been a kind of divide and conflict between academic programs and creative writing programs. I don’t know exactly how that began, but I have found over the years that that divide has lessened — practically disappeared — here. Bin Ramke Poet, Professor and Phipps Chair

Publications

Denver quarterly.

Founded in 1966 by John Williams, Denver Quarterly has published major writers at the cutting edge of avant-garde and experimental thought for more than 50 years. The journal, which publishes reviews, poetry, prose and cross-genre writing, is edited by a DU faculty member with the assistance of graduate students.

Scholarly & Creative Publications

Faculty and graduate students publish scholarship and creative works with top journals, magazines and presses. The Department of English & Literary Arts at DU is made up of researchers, scholars and writers whose works span academic and creative publications — and frequently explore where critical and creative work meet.

Foothills Visual and Textual Journal

Foothills, published annually by a staff of undergraduate students at DU, is a longstanding publication that brings textual and visual innovations together. First established in 1946, Foothills is dedicated to the ways in which verbal and artistic creativity vitalizes community.

Graduate Academic Programs

Department of English

The two-year MPhil programme of the Department of English, located between the MA. and the PhD, provides the student with a unique experience of graduate study and research: unlike the MA. which works with large lecture classes and the PhD which mainly involves working alone on a research project under supervision, the MPhil offers the opportunity for intensive interaction with a peer group in small seminar sessions and training in closely supervised research.  Faculty members enjoy full freedom in designing courses in the MPhil and students choose their courses from a wide range of options offered in each semester. As a result, MPhil courses explore newly emerging research areas and problem fields, and enable thinking beyond traditional disciplinary borders. The MPhil programme began in the Department of English in 1979, and has evolved continuously in tune with the changing contours of the discipline. Its structure too has seen several changes. The programme runs under a special ordinance of the University, which has allowed constant modulation of the programme in response to the changing needs of the students. Spread over four semesters, the MPhil programme has the following structure:

  • After admission, students are enrolled in a research methodology course. In addition to this, each student chooses one of the courses on offer in the first semester.
  • In the second semester, students choose two optional courses. At the end of the this semester, they specify the area of their research specialization.
  • In the third semester, in addition to continuing the coursework in an optional course, students begin work on their dissertation by writing an individually supervised essay on the area of their research interest. At the end of the this semester, interested students may apply for a direct transfer to the PhD programme without completing their MPhil. Decisions on such applications take into account the performance of the student in coursework and the quality and viability of the research proposal.
  • In the fourth semester, students who do not transfer to the PhD programme write their MPhil dissertation under supervision.

The research projects and theses they submit are testament to what new practices and conventions they can bring to the field. Alternatively, they can project the knowledge they have to the younger generation through their positions as academic professors or lecturers in the best colleges offering PhD courses.

Since a PhD means you're the best in the field, you'll obviously be placed in higher positions in any organisation that does work under that particular field. Fellowship programmes can be headed by you. Lectures and  you will also be offered professor post in many of the universities, and a lot of fellowship programs also make the candidates complete their fellowships by giving lectures to the university students of the courses that the candidate is doing the fellowship in.

The eligibility for this course involves a postgraduate degree with a minimum score set by the university you're interested in. The core subjects of the postgraduate degree will be considered as the eligible fields in which the candidate can pursue their PhD programme. Even though some of the colleges offer admissions based on merit in their postgraduate degrees, most universities conduct their own entrance exams as a gateway to their PhD courses.

The syllabus for the exams is generalised for all candidates, and is largely aptitude-based. Depending on the course and the feasibility, some universities conduct the appropriate exam. With that out of the way, here's a look at the syllabus of the most famous entrance exams for PhD admissions.

Delhi University is one of the top universities of the country; it has 700+ college-based affiliations, centres across the most popular states, the largest student population in Asia, and is one of the largest universities in the world. Some colleges under Delhi University offer admissions to PhD courses based on the merit you've obtained in any postgraduate course. Here's how the PhD entrance exam syllabus and the exam pattern works, after which we'll also take a look at the courses:

  • The questions are mainly in MCQ patterns.
  • Usually, Part A consists of research questions in numerical ability, language proficiency and logical reasoning.
  • Part B consists of technical questions related to the specific discipline.
  • For each incorrect answer, marks will be deducted.
  • The duration and the number of questions vary for each PhD entrance exam.
  • Additionally, the exam pattern may vary depending on the conducting authority.
