Official Degree Color Chart

This  Academic Hood Colors List  serves an important function for your set of graduation Academic Regalia (hood, tam, and gown). 

The regalia hood colors typically include four sections: shell fabric, velvet edge, satin field, and satin chevron. The color of the velvet edge is determined using this  official degree color chart . That velvet edge hood color, sometimes known as Academic Regalia Inter-Collegiate Colors, represents your specific degree or discipline. The satin field and chevron (the hood lining colors) represent your university or college school colors. The overall size and shape represents the type of degree: bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral (with the narrow end getting progressively longer with the higher ranking degrees). Finally, the fabric shell color simply matches the fabric color of the graduation gown, which is usually black but sometimes is another color depending on the degree-granting institution. Associate degrees use a special cowl instead of a hood.

Below is the official academic regalia hood color list. Your academic hood colors are ultimately the decision of your degree-granting institution and you. However, these are the official academic regalia colors.

* In determining your academic regalia colors, please note the following: All PhD degrees (as opposed to Doctorate degrees) use "PhD Blue", which is dark blue, in the academic colors. For example, a Doctorate in Psychology would include in your academic hood colors the color Gold, however a PhD in Psychology would use dark blue. If you are unsure if your degree is a Doctorate or PhD, please contact your administrative advisor to determine your precise degree title and academic regalia hood colors.

If you have  multiple degrees , the rule is that you use only one hood, and only one degree/discipline color. You use the hood and color that represents your highest ranking degree (with Doctoral as highest, Masters as second highest, Bachelors as third highest, and Associate as the lowest). If you have two different degrees at the same highest ranking degree, you generally use the most recently awarded degree as your hood.

If you have an  unlisted degree , there is no official color and it is dependant on the individual college or university to determine the color to be used for your hood. Typically, the most similar degree on the official chart is chosen. For example, if your degree is in an advance computer science field, usually the school chooses Science Gold for the degree color.

The above list describes only your velvet colors. There are three additional colors that typically go into your hood. They are the shell fabric (usually black, but sometimes the  color of your robe  if your robe is a special color that your university uses), and the lining colors.

Hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. More than one color is shown by division of the field color in a variety of ways. Most schools divide the color by using a single chevron. Occasionally, a school might use more than one chevron, no chevron but instead a single field color, an equal division, a reverse chevron, a straight bar, or other methods. While Academic Apparel can make any variety of hood, please note that the online ordering system assumes a single field and a single standard chevron. For other unusual types of hoods, you will have to use our downloadable fax forms.

The official "Academic Costume Code and Academic Ceremony Guide" includes a sentence that reads as follows: "The various academic costume companies maintain complete files on the approved colors for various institutions."

Once upon a time long ago, that sentence was correct. However, that was before colleges started springing up across the nation at a rapid rate in the last 50 years or so, and before institutions started the practice of changing their hood colors depending on style or taste or the desires of the student body or economics for bulk manufacturing (sometimes even on a yearly basis).

We are the direct manufacturer of academic regalia.  This means one good thing and one bad thing (from your perspective). 

The good thing is our prices are significantly lower than your degree-granting university would charge to sell them to you, yet the quality is the same or better than what they offer.  That's because we are a relatively lean organization, independent, with over 60 years of experience, and we do not pay sales representatives, or have retail stores, or have a large advertising and marketing budget.

The bad thing is we cannot keep up with the changes each university makes to their regalia each year, and therefore require that our customers make their own inquiries to their degree-granting universities to discover what the current regalia colors are supposed to be for that school before placing an order.

We suggest you find out in advance of ordering what your school colors are, and which goes in the field and which goes in the chevron of the hood. You might also ask the following additional information: 1) whether they use 6 or 8 sides for their tam (if you are buying a tam); 2) whether they use a tam or a mortarboard for a Master's degree (if you are inquiring about a master's gown regalia set); 3) whether they use the standard black for the gown and hood shell color or if they have a special color; 4) whether they use an embroidered school emblem or symbol on the gown velvet an dif so what it looks like (these are fairly rare, but a few schools use them); 5) and if there is anything special about the regalia not covered by those questions. 

Generally the best source for this information is the University book store or student store. Someone at most bookstores has all of this information.

You should know that you have the right to purchase your gown from any manufacturer, and not just the company that has a contract with your university. By getting this information on your own and purchasing your regalia from Academic Apparel, you will be saving money, and getting a regalia set that looks at least as good as what your school offers, and often it looks and feels significantly better than the bulk manufactured chinese gowns many colleges are now selling (and ours will last longer than those gowns too).

While we would really like to help you obtain this information, and hope to some day send out surveys each year to each university asking for this data, it is beyond our abilities to do so right now. We can also place the order over the phone if you do not find your country. However because such shipments often involve the peculiarities of the various tariffs trade and import/export laws around the globe we may not be able to ship some orders overseas due to the cost of researching the laws for that location. Also if possible it is always easier for us to ship to a US-based shipping address and you will always save on shipping costs if you can arrange for a US-based address to receive the shipment. At this time due to advice from our bank concerning trends in fraud we reserve all rights to deny or proceed with orders shipping internationally.

RETURN AND EXCHANGE POLICY 

If a return is accepted, due to COVID-19, it can only be used as store credit at this time or be used towards an exchange for another size or product. Any products that have been worn or used many not qualify for store credit. Due to COVID-19 it is not safe for customers and we are not able to resell any returned items. Any returns that fall within our usual return policy will be used as future store credit.

All returns must be authorized by email [email protected], please provide your order number and email address.

Our return / exchange form will be emailed to you and must be completed with the return.

All products and packaging must be in new original condition with unopened packages and original packing materials and may not be returned used, worn or altered in any way. No exceptions for return if the packages are opened or/and worn.

All shipping, handling and processing charges for your original order are non-refundable. It is the responsibility of the customer to pay any return/exchange shipping. Once we receive your exchange, we will give you a call to process the payment of the exchange shipping cost.

On all returned merchandise a 13% restocking fee will be applied.All returned product(s) must be returned/ received within 7 business days of return approval date. A delay will result in complete forfeiture of your return. 

Requests for returns must be made within 14 days from the date of receipt of your order.

Registered return shipping of products which are returned is the responsibility of the customer.Your return will be processed within 7-10 days. 

All custom items/apparel cannot be returned and are non-refundable, this is because these items are made from custom fabrics or have custom printing with your personal information, therefore cancellations are not accepted after your order has been submitted.

Products that are not eligible for returns are clearly marked as “On Sale” on the Product page for that Product. All products on sale are non-refundable, however can be exchanged for the same credit amount.

You can cancel any in-stock product orders if it has not been shipped/left our facility. 

Custom orders can only be cancelled the next business day you have placed your order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the material of your gowns washing instructions.

Our gowns are all made of 100% polyester. Purely made polyester, like our products, is extremely strong, extremely durable and has excellent properties such as being hydrophobic in nature that leads to quick-drying and stain resistance.

We recommend dry cleaning for all of our products in order to keep the integrity of the garment. However, our products can be washed in a machine using the gentle cycle or handwashed. For drying, please hang dry. The material can be ironed on a low setting.

What is the difference between matte and shiny?

The main difference is the finish of the fabric. Our shiny gowns are a knitted fabric that has more of a shiny look to it giving the color of the gowns more brightness. Our matte gowns are a woven fabric which has more of a flat dull finish. 

What is the difference between the Deluxe and the classic/matte gown?

Our Deluxe gowns have fluting around the shoulders and yoke. They have more fabric used so they tend to be heavier. This is true for all of our deluxe gowns. 

The deluxe master has a different shape for the batwings. 

The deluxe doctor has bell sleeves and a braided button to attach the hood whereas the classic does not.

We cannot do an embroidered chest emblem on the classic doctor. 

Overall, the deluxe is considered a higher quality gown for your regalia.

How do I know what gown's color to choose?

Please contact your educational institution, as we currently do not have access to school colors.

What if my school orders with a different company?

We welcome anyone to order with us! Although, we cannot give assurance or be held responsible for our gowns’ colours matching another company’s gowns. We provide unique shades of gowns are not the same with another vendor's products.

I don’t see the color I need. Do you provide any that aren’t listed?

You can email us the color that you need, we will get back to you with a closed match. 

We can color match some products if a bulk order is placed.

How to select my Graduation gown size?

You need to provide us with each customer's height with shoes on for the gown and weight. You do not need to provide cap size as our standard caps are one size fits all with elastic. Please see the our size chart . 

Do you offer plus sizes?

We do have regular and full-fit sizes. We have plus sizes in 45, 48, 51, 54, 57, and 63. Please refer to the measuring instructions link for more information on our sizing.

How do I wear my hood? 

Place it over your head draping off your shoulders and across the back of your gown. The velvet edge should be on the outside visible from the back. Make sure the lining (field and chevron school colors) are turned out so that people can see from the back your university colors. Usually this is done by turning the velvet trim to the outside at the back just below your shoulders. If you ordered a professional / faculty hood there will be a cord in the back (with two buttons one on each side of the hood) to keep your hood in place and a cord in the front to keep the hood away from your neck. Fasten the front cord to a shirt or dress button. Finally make sure the fabric shell of the hood is smoothed down and lays flat against the back of your robe. 

How do I select my hood's colors?

There is no standardized and unified published listing available of all current school colors.

While Academichoods does maintain a color chart for degree velvet colors there is no true substitute for contacting your school directly and asking them what colors they are currently using for your graduation apparel. Schools can and sometimes do change their colors on a yearly basis (and even the color of the gown itself).

The lining and chevron (satin fabric) represent your school colors. The shell is the material of hood which is always black (polyester fabric, matte finish). The velvet color represents your specific degree or field of study.

You always need to choose the colors based on your highest level of education or current school you are attending.

Can I customize my gown?

From Pre-K to High School/Bachelor regular gowns, we do not offer other colors than the ones listed on the website. If you are looking to order more than 1000pcs, please email us the Pantone color and we will get back to you.

If you need to add a logo or letters on regular gowns, please email us the specifications and we will get back to you with a quote and estimated delivery date. 

For Deluxe Bachelor, Master gowns, we do offer custom colors and embroidery with no minimum order required. Please email us what you are looking to order and we will provide you a quote. 

For Doctoral gowns, we offer a listing where you can customize your own gown. You can select your gown color, piping color, add embroidery, etc... If you do not see an option that you would like to add on your gown, please email us and we will check if we are able to process your request.

What does piping mean for the gown/hood?

Piping is an embroidered thread around the velvet of a gown or hood.

Why would I need a 4th Chevron on my doctorate gown?

The 4th Chevron is for the Chancellor or President of a University. If you are neither, do not select "Add 4th Chevron" to your doctorate gown.

Do you offer different sizes for caps/tams/ beefeaters? Are they adjustable? What are they made of?

Our caps are made of 100% polyester. 

We provide caps in two sizes: Adult and Child.

They measure 9"x9".

The caps are not adjustable.

What is the difference between 4, 6 or 8 sided tam?

The level of education attained by the wearer is indicated by the varying number of sides on a tam. Master's graduates commonly wear four or six-sided tams, with the specific choice often determined by the school. It's advisable to verify the appropriate tam style before making a purchase. Tams with six sides are suitable for programs like Ed.S (education specialist) that fall between Master's and Ph.D. Eight-sided tams are typically reserved for Doctoral programs.

What is beefeater?

A beefeater, also referred to as a Tudor Bonnet, is a premium hat usually reserved for esteemed officials overseeing graduation ceremonies (deans, presidents, etc...). The standard mortarboard, a square of cardboard encased in polyester, is worn atop the head and traditionally used for primary and secondary school graduations. In contrast, tams are more commonly chosen for advanced graduations like Ed.S and doctoral ceremonies, and occasionally for master's degrees.

What is the material of your gowns washing instructions.

Our gowns are all made of 100% polyester. Purely made polyester, like our products, is extremely strong, extremely durable and has excellent properties such as being hydrophobic in nature that leads to quick-drying and stain resistance.

We recommend dry cleaning for all of our products in order to keep the integrity of the garment. However, our products can be washed in a machine using the gentle cycle or handwashed. For drying, please hang dry. The material can be ironed on a low setting.

What is the difference between matte and shiny?

The main difference is the finish of the fabric. Our shiny gowns are a knitted fabric that has more of a shiny look to it giving the color of the gowns more brightness. Our matte gowns are a woven fabric which has more of a flat dull finish. 

What is the difference between the Deluxe and the classic/matte gown?

Our Deluxe gowns have fluting around the shoulders and yoke. They have more fabric used so they tend to be heavier. This is true for all of our deluxe gowns.

The deluxe master has a different shape for the batwings.

The deluxe doctor has bell sleeves and a braided button to attach the hood whereas the classic does not.

We cannot do an embroidered chest emblem on the classic doctor.

Overall, the deluxe is considered a higher quality gown for your regalia.

How do I know what gown's color to choose?

Please contact your educational institution, as we currently do not have access to school colors.

What if my school orders with a different company?

We welcome anyone to order with us! Although, we cannot give assurance or be held responsible for our gowns’ colours matching another company’s gowns. We provide unique shades of gowns are not the same with another vendor's products.

The color does not match my university regalia?

We do not color match. We have a very specific set of fabrics. We cannot guarantee that our fabric colors will match with another supplier’s fabrics.

I don’t see the color I need. Do you provide any that aren’t listed?

You can email us the color that you need, we will get back to you with a closed match.

We can color match some products if a bulk order is placed.

How to select my Graduation gown size?

You need to provide us with each customer's height with shoes on for the gown and weight. You do not need to provide cap size as our standard caps are one size fits all with elastic. Please see the our size chart . 

Do you offer plus sizes?

We do have regular and full-fit sizes. We have plus sizes in 45, 48, 54, 57, and 63. Please refer to the measuring instructions link for more information on our sizing.

We do not have full fit sizes in our child gowns. If you don't believe your graduate will fit within the child sizes, try a Size 39. You can find that size in High School Category. However, you may have to get the length hemmed at your cost.

Can I customize my gown?

From Pre-K to High School/Bachelor regular gowns, we do not offer other colors than the ones listed on the website. If you are looking to order more than 1000pcs, please email us the Pantone color and we will get back to you.

If you need to add a logo or letters on regular gowns, please email us the specifications and we will get back to you with a quote and estimated delivery date.

For Deluxe Bachelor, Master gowns, we do offer custom colors and embroidery with no minimum order required. Please email us what you are looking to order and we will provide you a quote.

For Doctoral gowns, we offer a listing where you can customize your own gown. You can select your gown color, piping color, add embroidery, etc... If you do not see an option that you would like to add on your gown, please email us and we will check if we are able to process your request.

What does piping mean for the gown/hood?

Piping is an embroidered thread around the velvet of a gown or hood.

Why would I need a 4th Chevron on my doctorate gown?

The 4th Chevron is for the Chancellor or President of a University. If you are neither, do not select "Add 4th Chevron" to your doctorate gown.

How do I select my hood's colors?

There is no standardized and unified published listing available of all current school colors.

While GraduationAttire does maintain a color chart for degree velvet colors there is no true substitute for contacting your school directly and asking them what colors they are currently using for your graduation apparel. Schools can and sometimes do change their colors on a yearly basis (and even the color of the gown itself).

The lining and chevron (satin fabric) represent your school colors. The shell is the material of hood which is always black (polyester fabric, matte finish). The velvet color represents your specific degree or field of study.

Please note for Associate Degree, you only need to select the lining and chevron colors (no velvet color required).

You always need to choose the colors based on your highest level of education or current school you are attending.

How do I wear my hood? 

Place it over your head draping off your shoulders and across the back of your gown. The velvet edge should be on the outside visible from the back. Make sure the lining (field and chevron school colors) are turned out so that people can see from the back your university colors. Usually this is done by turning the velvet trim to the outside at the back just below your shoulders. If you ordered a professional / faculty hood there will be a cord in the back (with two buttons one on each side of the hood) to keep your hood in place and a cord in the front to keep the hood away from your neck. Fasten the front cord to a shirt or dress button. Finally make sure the fabric shell of the hood is smoothed down and lays flat against the back of your robe. 

Do you offer different sizes for caps/tams/ beefeaters? Are they adjustable? What are they made of?

Our caps are made of 100% polyester.

We provide caps in two sizes: Adult and Child.

They measure 9"x9".

The caps are not adjustable.

What is the difference between 4, 6 or 8 sided tam?

The level of education attained by the wearer is indicated by the varying number of sides on a tam. Master's graduates commonly wear four or six-sided tams, with the specific choice often determined by the school. It's advisable to verify the appropriate tam style before making a purchase. Tams with six sides are suitable for programs like Ed.S (education specialist) that fall between Master's and Ph.D. Eight-sided tams are typically reserved for Doctoral programs.

What is beefeater?

A beefeater, also referred to as a Tudor Bonnet, is a premium hat usually reserved for esteemed officials overseeing graduation ceremonies (deans, presidents, etc...). The standard mortarboard, a square of cardboard encased in polyester, is worn atop the head and traditionally used for primary and secondary school graduations. In contrast, tams are more commonly chosen for advanced graduations like Ed.S and doctoral ceremonies, and occasionally for master's degrees.

Can I customize my diploma cover?

Yes, you can with a minimum order of 8 pcs. Please email us with the details of your diploma covers and we can provide you a quote and estimated delivery date.

What does debossed mean for diploma covers?

Debossing typically refers to the process of creating a raised or indented design on the surface of the cover. This is achieved by using a die (a metal or other hard material) to press the design into the material of the cover, creating a textured and visually appealing result.

In the case of diploma covers, debossing is often used to add a tactile and elegant element to the cover. It can be used to feature the school's emblem, logo, or other decorative elements. The debossed design is usually slightly indented into the material, providing a subtle and sophisticated look and feel to the diploma cover.

How do I know which diploma cover to buy?

We recommend checking with your school which color and size to get or you can measure your diploma as well.

I lost my diploma, can I order one on the website?

What is a graduation stole? Can I wear a stole for my graduation?

What is a jumbo tassel?

Can the year charm on the tassel be removed or changed?

Year Date Drops can easily be removed and reapplied yourself at home.

What is a graduation honor cord?

What is a double honor cord?

We will ship to some foreign locations. Such locations generally include Canada, Europe, South America, Japan and a few other locations. We can also place the order over the phone if you do not find your country. However because such shipments often involve the peculiarities of the various tariffs trade and import/export laws around the globe we may not be able to ship some orders overseas due to the cost of researching the laws for that location. Also if possible it is always easier for us to ship to a US-based shipping address and you will always save on shipping costs if you can arrange for a US-based address to receive the shipment. At this time due to advice from our bank concerning trends in fraud we reserve all rights to deny or proceed with orders shipping internationally.

University of California PhD Regalia

I arranged a group order for myself and 12 others-- we had a great experience. PhinisheD Gown worked with us to develop a custom google form for just our group. They were flexible and responsive, even with adding classmates to the group order at the last minute. It was very easy to individually pay for our robes and still participate in the group discount. It made a huge difference having them come to the UC Davis campus for an opportunity to try on the regalia and switch for a different size. About half of us exchanged (for free!) to a smaller size. If you're on the fence about a size, you should go to the smaller size. I would definitely recommend PhinisheD Gown, particularly if you can network among other grad students and get a large group order together.

Like many other people, I had been postponing the purchase of my regalia for monetary reasons. After 6 years as a university professor I caved in. I was about to buy the gown from my university bookstore for an insane amount of money when I thought of doing some basic google search for other websites dedicated to this business. I run into Phinishedgown.com by accident but I am so happy I did. The quality of the website was the first thing that caught my eye in comparison with others -- when you spend several hundred dollars, online, you want to have some confidence on the website and the people who run it. Nok answered all my enquiries via email very, very promptly and efficiently. And I had a lot of enquiries (size, material, return policy, shipment, etc)! One thing that I deeply appreciated from her was that she did not try to steer me towards the most expensive options in gowns. She gave me feedback based on my needs and preferences but never showing any bias. I finally decided for a polyester option instead of wool because of the area I live in (quite warm even in winter), but I was very close to buy the blended wool gown because the price was reasonable compared to my bookstore price. The polyester gown is light yet almost velvety to the touch. My concern was that it would look cheap but all the opposite. Nok was also very accommodating as far as shipment timing so that I would have time to return the polyester and order a customized wool one if I preferred before graduation. The hood is just gorgeous -- the satin material is soft, with bright colors. Overall, I am very, very pleased with my purchase and with the customer experience I had with Nok. When you make an investment like this, it is important that the seller shows that he/she cares about the quality of the service they are providing and the satisfaction of the consumer, and Nok did certainly that. Everything you need to know about UTSA’s academic regalia

MAY 6, 2024 — During a typical UTSA Commencement celebration, everyone is wearing a cap and gown but some look very different than others. UTSA Today has tapped into the history behind the university’s academic regalia to learn what the different colors and styles represent.

The tradition of the academic dress dates back nearly eight centuries. In medieval Europe, all townsmen wore long, flowing robes or gowns. The materials and colors varied greatly, according to the wealth and rank of the individual and were governed by royal decree. Gradually, distinctive gowns were developed for the various professions, trades and guilds. Today, this tradition remains for gowns of religious orders and judiciary and in academic regalia.

Through the years, great diversity in color and style of cap, gown and hood have evolved. In 1895, a commission was established to develop a uniform code for academic dress. Today, the gowns, hoods and mortarboards worn by the graduating students of most institutions, including UTSA, follow this code.

At UTSA, the gowns and mortarboards are navy blue, one of the university’s official colors.

This doctoral graduate celebrates her milestone with the mariachis that are a tradition at UTSA’s Commencement ceremonies. Notice the flowing sleeves and velvet stripes on the gown, as well as the gold bullion tassel.

The style of the gowns vary depending on the degree the student receives. The sleeves of the gowns worn by master’s degree recipients are square at the end.

The gowns of doctoral degree recipients have flowing sleeves with three bars of velvet and velvet facing down the front with the UTSA seal. The velvet trim is five inches wide for the doctoral degree. The color of the velvet border indicates the degree and aligns with the graduates’ tassel colors.

The biggest difference in regalia can be found in the hood, which identifies the graduate degree and institution from which it was awarded. For master’s students, the hood is short. For those receiving a doctoral degree, the hood is longer and lined with silk in the official colors of the student’s institution. The UTSA hoods are blue and lined in orange with one white chevron.

The academic caps also have their own special meanings. Developed in the 15th century, some caps were stiff, some soft, some square and some round with a tuft in the center.

The tassel used today is an elaboration of the tuft. While some institutions still use the round caps, most institutions, including UTSA, have adopted the mortarboard style that comes from Oxford University. Students earning terminal degrees wear a tam instead of a mortarboard.

For a bachelor’s degree, the tassel's colors represent the university in a tricolor of orange, blue and white. The tassel color worn by master’s degree recipients indicates the discipline in which the degree has been earned. Those graduating with a doctoral degree wear a gold bullion tassel.

The gold cord, worn by some undergraduate students, indicates graduation with honors: summa cum laude, which include graduates with a GPA of 3.90 to 4.00; magna cum laude, which is awarded to those with a GPA of 3.75 to 3.89 or cum laude, which includes graduates with a GPA of 3.50 to 3.74.

Graduates also wear one or more stoles, indicating individual achievements such as being a student in Honors College, a veteran or a first-generation college student.

UTSA leadership and faculty wear robes representing the university where they earned their highest degree. President  Taylor Eighmy ’s regalia, for example, is from the University of New Hampshire, where he earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering. Eighmy’s orange hood likewise signifies his engineering degree.

Eighmy also wears the UTSA Presidential Medallion, which symbolizes the authority and responsibility vested in the UTSA President. The brass medallion has the university’s seal on one side and the words “Presented by the UTSA Development Board in honor of the University’s 25th anniversary—1994” on the other side.

President Eighmy's regalia represents where he earned his Ph.D. in environmental engineering. He also wears the UTSA Presidential Medallion.

With standard processing, it will takes 14 business days to make your hood/custom gown.

With quick processing (+$6), we will need 5 business days to make your hood. 

With rush processing, we will ship your hood the next business day.

We will ship to some foreign locations. Such locations generally include Canada, Europe, South America, Japan and a few other locations. You can check if your country is available by simulating placing an order on our website. We can also place the order over the phone if you do not find your country. However because such shipments often involve the peculiarities of the various tariffs trade and import/export laws around the globe we may not be able to ship some orders overseas due to the cost of researching the laws for that location. Also if possible it is always easier for us to ship to a US-based shipping address and you will always save on shipping costs if you can arrange for a US-based address to receive the shipment. At this time due to advice from our bank concerning trends in fraud we reserve all rights to deny or proceed with orders shipping internationally.

RETURN AND EXCHANGE POLICY 

If a return is accepted, due to COVID-19, it can only be used as store credit at this time or be used towards an exchange for another size or product. Any products that have been worn or used many not qualify for store credit. Due to COVID-19 it is not safe for customers and we are not able to resell any returned items. Any returns that fall within our usual return policy will be used as future store credit. 

All returns must be authorized through this link, please provide your order number and email address. 

All products and packaging must be in new original condition with unopened packages and original packing materials and may not be returned used, worn or altered in any way. No exceptions for return if the packages are opened or/and worn.

All shipping, handling and processing charges for your original order are non-refundable. It is the responsibility of the customer to pay any return/exchange shipping. Once we receive your exchange, we will give you a call to process the payment of the exchange shipping cost.

On all returned merchandise a 13% restocking fee will be applied.All returned product(s) must be returned/ received within 7 business days of return approval date. A delay will result in complete forfeiture of your return. 

Requests for returns must be made within 14 days from the date of receipt of your order.

Registered return shipping of products which are returned is the responsibility of the customer.Your return will be processed within 7-10 days. 

All custom items/apparel cannot be returned and are non-refundable, this is because these items are made from custom fabrics or have custom printing with your personal information, therefore cancellations are not accepted after your order has been submitted.

Requests to return/exchange products due to quality issue must be made within 14 days of delivery or we will not able to accept any return (received wrong item, color, size and other company error...), please send any evidence to [email protected], we will resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Products that are not eligible for returns are clearly marked as “On Sale” on the Product page for that Product. All products on sale are non-refundable, however can be exchanged for the same credit amount.

Frequently asked questions

What is the material of your gowns washing instructions.

Our gowns are all made of 100% polyester. Purely made polyester, like our products, is extremely strong, extremely durable and has excellent properties such as being hydrophobic in nature that leads to quick-drying and stain resistance.

We recommend dry cleaning for all of our products in order to keep the integrity of the garment. However, our products can be washed in a machine using the gentle cycle or handwashed. For drying, please hang dry. The material can be ironed on a low setting.

What is the difference between matte and shiny?

The main difference is the finish of the fabric. Our shiny gowns are a knitted fabric that has more of a shiny look to it giving the color of the gowns more brightness. Our matte gowns are a woven fabric which has more of a flat dull finish. 

How do I know what gown's color to choose?

Please contact your educational institution, as we currently do not have access to school colors.

What is the difference between the Deluxe and the classic/matte gown?

Our Deluxe gowns have fluting around the shoulders and yoke. They have more fabric used so they tend to be heavier. This is true for all of our deluxe gowns. 

The deluxe master has a different shape for the batwings. 

The deluxe doctor has bell sleeves and a braided button to attach the hood whereas the classic does not.

We cannot do an embroidered chest emblem on the classic doctor. 

Overall, the deluxe is considered a higher quality gown for your regalia.

What if my school orders with a different company?

We welcome anyone to order with us! Although, we cannot give assurance or be held responsible for our gowns’ colours matching another company’s gowns. We provide unique shades of gowns are not the same with another vendor's products.

The color does not match my university regalia?

We do not color match. We have a very specific set of fabrics. We cannot guarantee that our fabric colors will match with another supplier’s fabrics.

I don’t see the color I need. Do you provide any that aren’t listed?

You can email us the color that you need, we will get back to you with a closed match. 

We can color match some products if a bulk order is placed.

How to select my Graduation gown size?

You need to provide us with each customer's height with shoes on for the gown and weight. You do not need to provide cap size as our standard caps are one size fits all with elastic. Please see the our size chart . 

Do you offer plus sizes?

We do have regular and full-fit sizes. We have plus sizes in 45, 48, 51, 54, 57, and 63. Please refer to the measuring instructions link for more information on our sizing.

Can I customize my gown?

From Pre-K to High School/Bachelor regular gowns, we do not offer other colors than the ones listed on the website. If you are looking to order more than 1000pcs, please email us the Pantone color and we will get back to you.

If you need to add a logo or letters on regular gowns, please email us the specifications and we will get back to you with a quote and estimated delivery date. 

For Deluxe Bachelor, Master gowns, we do offer custom colors and embroidery with no minimum order required. Please email us what you are looking to order and we will provide you a quote. 

For Doctoral gowns, we offer a listing where you can customize your own gown. You can select your gown color, piping color, add embroidery, etc... If you do not see an option that you would like to add on your gown, please email us and we will check if we are able to process your request.

What does piping mean for the gown/hood?

Piping is an embroidered thread around the velvet of a gown or hood.

Why would I need a 4th Chevron on my doctorate gown?

The 4th Chevron is for the Chancellor or President of a University. If you are neither, do not select "Add 4th Chevron" to your doctorate gown.

How do I select my hood's colors?

There is no standardized and unified published listing available of all current school colors.

While GraduationAttire does maintain a color chart for degree velvet colors there is no true substitute for contacting your school directly and asking them what colors they are currently using for your graduation apparel. Schools can and sometimes do change their colors on a yearly basis (and even the color of the gown itself).

The lining and chevron (satin fabric) represent your school colors. The shell is the material of hood which is always black (polyester fabric, matte finish). The velvet color represents your specific degree or field of study.

Please note for Associate Degree, you only need to select the lining and chevron colors (no velvet color required). 

You always need to choose the colors based on your highest level of education or current school you are attending.

How do I wear my hood?

Place it over your head draping off your shoulders and across the back of your gown. The velvet edge should be on the outside visible from the back. Make sure the lining (field and chevron school colors) are turned out so that people can see from the back your university colors. Usually this is done by turning the velvet trim to the outside at the back just below your shoulders. If you ordered a professional / faculty hood there will be a cord in the back (with two buttons one on each side of the hood) to keep your hood in place and a cord in the front to keep the hood away from your neck. Fasten the front cord to a shirt or dress button. Finally make sure the fabric shell of the hood is smoothed down and lays flat against the back of your robe. 

Do you offer different sizes for caps/tams/ beefeaters? Are they adjustable? What are they made of?

Our caps are made of 100% polyester. 

We provide caps in two sizes: Adult and Child.

They measure 9"x9".

The caps are not adjustable.

What is the difference between 4, 6 or 8 sided tam?

What is beefeater?

A beefeater, also referred to as a Tudor Bonnet, is a premium hat usually reserved for esteemed officials overseeing graduation ceremonies (deans, presidents, etc...). The standard mortarboard, a square of cardboard encased in polyester, is worn atop the head and traditionally used for primary and secondary school graduations. In contrast, tams are more commonly chosen for advanced graduations like Ed.S and doctoral ceremonies, and occasionally for master's degrees.
