Vanderbilt University again ranked among the nation’s top research institutions receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health , according to the latest data compiled by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research .
The total amount Vanderbilt scholars received across the School of Nursing, the School of Medicine Basic Sciences and 15 clinical sciences departments, which operate within the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, reached $445,537,839, reflecting a 31 percent increase over the past five years.
Vanderbilt has ranked among the top 12 research universities receiving NIH funding in 14 of the past 15 years. The NIH is the nation’s medical research agency and the leading supporter of biomedical research in the world.
“By accelerating research across the university, NIH funding enables us to be more bold in our aspirations as a highest-caliber academic institution,” said C. Cybele Raver, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “This year’s ranking is a positive reflection of our steep upward trajectory and increasing impact.”
“Vanderbilt’s biomedical researchers are among the top in the nation working on solving some of the world’s greatest challenges,” said Padma Raghavan, vice provost for research. “To amplify impacts from the support provided by the National Institutes of Health, we are more committed than ever in continuing to make institutional investments to drive discovery and innovation.”
Largely an indicator of an institution’s strength in biomedical research, the funding data was obtained from the Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool from the National Institutes of Health.
Past and current NIH funding provides scholars with the necessary funds to research and treat diseases like COVID-19 , explore novel treatments to disease and conduct the pathbreaking foundational research that will empower future scientists around the world to pursue new knowledge related to human health.
All four School of Medicine Basic Sciences departments ranked in the top five nationally: biochemistry ranked No. 1; cell and developmental biology and molecular physiology and biophysics both ranked third; and pharmacology ranked fifth.
In six of the clinical science departments, the School of Medicine ranked in the top 10: otolaryngology-head and neck surgery ranked No. 2; medicine and ophthalmology and visual sciences were fourth; pediatrics was sixth; and anesthesiology and urology were ninth.
“School of Medicine faculty continue to compete successfully for NIH funding to support their research. This is a tribute to their outstanding research programs, our collaborative culture and the investments the school has made in infrastructure and state-of-the-art core facilities,” said Lawrence J. Marnett, who has been dean of Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine Basic Sciences since its creation in 2016. “It is noteworthy that all four basic sciences departments are in the top five in their disciplines, which is the first time since the VU-VUMC reorganization.”
Since 2018, the School of Nursing has jumped ahead 17 rankings and increased its funding by more than $601,000.
More than 80 percent of the NIH’s budget goes to over 300,000 research personnel at more than 2,500 universities and research institutions throughout the United States. In addition, about 6,000 scientists work in NIH’s own Intramural Research laboratories, most of which are on the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The main campus is also home to the NIH Clinical Center, the largest hospital in the world totally dedicated to clinical research. The NIH’s mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and apply that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability. Due in large measure to NIH research, a person born in the United States today can expect to live nearly 30 years longer than someone born in 1900.

Alum: Overall, my undergraduate experience at Johns Hopkins was great. The academics were challenging without being destructive to student mental health and there were always numerous clubs, involvement opportunities, and events on campus to attend in my free time. It was easy to find research opportunities at the hospital and in general, the professors were very supportive. I do wish that I had seen more of JHU's involvement in local communities and would love to see the college work to give back more to local communities in the future. ... Read 1,407 reviews

Graduate Student: The University of Washington offers a vibrant school life characterized by a welcoming atmosphere and warm-hearted professors who genuinely care about their students' success. Interactions with classmates are often pleasant and enriching, fostering a sense of community. However, safety concerns linger as an area needing improvement. While the campus exudes warmth and inclusivity, addressing safety issues would further enhance the overall experience, ensuring students can focus on their studies without worry. Graduate Student: University of South Florida is by far the safest campus across Florida that I have known. The campus police are on guard 24/7 and they notify all suspicious activities to students immediately as soon as they take place. The professors at USF are also very open and friendly. They can be very strict sometimes in terms of academics; however, they are mostly easy to get along with after class. Most of these professors also uphold good personal values and principles, which is very respectable. The students here are mostly down-to-earth and chill; there are seldom serious conflicts between students across all majors. The food on campus might not be the best, but it still provides us with a lot of convenience in terms of the location of several dining halls. Above all, I personally recommend USF because I think it is a college that offers a good learning experience and very little stress outside of academic reasons. ... Read 7,540 reviews

Junior: I have absolutely loved my experience at The Ohio State University for these past two years. I am actually a transfer student and I was a little worried about coming in to a brand new school halfway through my freshman year. However, all of the amazing faculty at Ohio State made it super easy to transition to a new school. I was able to get involved with student organizations from day one of being on campus. I love how many different ways there are to get involved; there truly is something for everyone here. Since it is a larger school, it is a little more dependent on your own self to get involved and take advantage of all the things that are offered. I also love having the city of Columbus to take advantage of! There are so many things to do and it makes it super easy to get off campus. I also love how proud everyone is to be a Buckeye. My advice to any first-time in college student is to take your time to explore your interests and gradually get involved in activities and organizations that resonate with you. Whether it's joining a club related to your major, participating in intramural sports, or volunteering in the community, UCF offers numerous opportunities for personal and academic growth outside the classroom. Also, keep an open mind, be proactive in seeking out opportunities, and don't hesitate to reach out to fellow students, faculty, or staff if you ever need support or guidance along the way. Campus is walkable filled with nice community spaces and plenty of libraries, cafes, and rooms to study and meet with classmates. A lot of school spirit centered around the athletics. Most people live off campus starting second year. The apartments in Chauncey Square are an excellent location and close to night life spots and restaurants. Campus is very diverse and there are many opportunities to join clubs and student groups. Purdue is only 1 or 2 hours away from two different international airports, and shuttle busses run nearly everyday between those airports and Purdue campus, making travel easier for international or out of state students. Moreover, the campus community lacks diversity, leading to a somewhat homogeneous environment that limits exposure to different perspectives. One significant area of disappointment has been the dining options. While there are eateries available, the quality and variety of food leave much to be desired. Many students opt to seek alternatives off-campus for more satisfying meals. Despite these shortcomings, Florida Tech does offer solid academic programs. Freshman: Rochester Institute of Technology has amazing opportunities for those interested in computers and doing new and exciting things with hardware and/or software. These opportunities are student led and run, and truly create an experience unlike anything I have seen at any other college. The administration and professors at all levels could be a little more compassionate and helpful, there is very little personal recognition or support from the majority of professors in your first year. ... Alum: My four years at Ouachita were some of the best years of my life. Located in a town of 10,000, there's not much to do in town, but it is the perfect place if you love the outdoors, with dozens of places to hike and camp and go to the lake nearby. Any grad will tell you that the community at OBU is the best part of the school - because it's small, it's easy to get connected and make friends. Most professors are very warm and personable, and care about your growth academically and as a person. Depending on your HS experience, classes can seem moderate to challenging. There are always fun events going on on campus, and service opportunities. OBU also does a great job integrating faith and learning. With multiple Campus Ministries events, leadership opportunities, and an absolutely top-notch Christian Studies department, students are equipped and empowered to represent Christ in any context. With a warm and friendly atmosphere, OBU really does come to feel like home. ... Read 578 reviews

U-M Medical School sees significant growth in NIH research awards and ranking

In a highly competitive field, Michigan Medicine once again rises to the top. Based on recent federal fiscal year data released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest single funder of biomedical research in the world, the U-M Medical School is ranked number 11 in the country, up from 13 in federal fiscal year 2022.
The Medical School’s total market share increased to 2.68% (up from 2.47%) and current NIH funding amounts to $482.8 million, an almost 11% increase over the previous fiscal year.
Overall, the Medical School received $777.3M in total awards from all sources in FY23.
“Michigan Medicine remains totally committed to advancing our basic science and clinical research. With the support of the NIH and other funding sources, our incredible faculty and teams will lead the future of health care and biomedical research,” said Marschall S. Runge, CEO, Michigan Medicine and Dean, U-M Medical School.
At the unit level, 70% of departments saw positive growth in funding, and more than half also had a positive change in their NIH ranking. Two departments, Physiology and Urology, are ranked first in the nation, with four more (Biomedical Engineering, Emergency Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Surgery) ranked in the top five. Overall, 21 departments are ranked in the top 15 tier, with 17 ranking in the top 10.
Funding from the NIH makes up the majority of research dollars flowing into academic medical centers in the U.S. Some of the projects reflected in the Medical School’s positive performance include the $71 million Clinical and Translational Science Award supporting the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR); a collaborative effort to understand the mechanisms behind kidney disease; funding to support diabetes research, depression treatment and more. Overall, the NIH awarded 933 grants to faculty within the Medical School in federal fiscal year 2023, alone.
In addition to a strong performance in NIH award dollars, the Medical School is continuing to demonstrate consistent expenditure growth across all sponsors as UFY23 had 7.27% increase over UFY22, as researchers put these funds into action. The Medical School accounts for 43% of U-M’s research expenditures.
And while funds from the NIH are a primary source, research at the Medical School is also supported by more than $100 million in awards from non-profits and more than $155 million in industry-sponsored awards. In total, the Medical School received $777.3 million total awards in the university’s fiscal year 2023.
As a result of this investment, many of these projects are leading to potential innovative therapies, moving through the technology transfer process into commercialization. For example, there were 249 invention reports in U-M fiscal year 2023.
“We owe our ability to attract NIH funding to the dedicated and innovative biomedical research community here at the Medical School. The work of these great minds continues to improve our standing as one of the top research institutions in the nation and allows us to attract the critical collaborations and talent that will lead to great discoveries now and in the future,” said Steven Kunkel, Ph.D., Executive Vice Dean for Research, U-M Medical School and Chief Scientific Officer, Michigan Medicine.
NIH rankings for departments are generated from publicly available data and determined as a percent of the total funding available to medical schools. The full data set published by the NIH is available in the NIH RePORTER: https://reporter.nih.gov/
Medical school rankings for NIH fiscal year 2023 were also recently compiled by the independent Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, which uses a different methodology and placed U-M at number 12.

![biomedical research ranking biomedical research ranking](https://www.scimagojr.com/img/comments_icon_black.png)
The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.
The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.
Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.
This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.
Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.
Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.
International Collaboration accounts for the articles that have been produced by researchers from several countries. The chart shows the ratio of a journal's documents signed by researchers from more than one country; that is including more than one country address.
Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.
Ratio of a journal's items, grouped in three years windows, that have been cited at least once vs. those not cited during the following year.
Evolution of the percentage of female authors.
Evolution of the number of documents cited by public policy documents according to Overton database.
Evoution of the number of documents related to Sustainable Development Goals defined by United Nations. Available from 2018 onwards.

RPI’s New Master of Biomedical Engineering Data Science Readies Students for Careers in Health Sciences, Clinical Research, and more
May 10, 2024
![biomedical research ranking Two health care professionals looking at MRI data on a screen](https://news.rpi.edu/sites/default/files/styles/sixteen_by_nine_medium/public/2024-05/BME%20Data%20Science%20MS%20image.jpg?itok=mnKFF9Je)
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has established a new master’s degree program that will prepare students for careers of biomedical data science, a fast growing engineering specialty.
Those with expertise in biomedical data science are already in high demand, and that demand will continue to rise in the future, said Juergen Hahn, Ph.D., head of the Biomedical Engineering Department.
“Data science has a big role to play in many fields, including engineering. People working with data in biomedical research, health care, and similar fields need to understand biology and the human body to properly analyze that data and draw accurate conclusions. Our program will graduate students ready to do that,” Hahn said.
Biomedical data includes everything from health records and diagnostic images to clinical trial results and the human genome. As technology continues to advance, the volume and complexity of biomedical data will only increase, as will the need for professionals who can make sense of it.
The Master of Engineering in biomedical data science is a two-semester program covering a broad range of data science techniques related to biostatistics, advanced multivariate statistics, and machine learning and artificial intelligence.
The curriculum includes several core biomedical data science courses as well as electives on topics ranging from computer vision to big data policy. In their final semester, students will complete a project in which they work on solving a biomedical engineering challenge.
Visit the Department of Biomedical Engineering website to learn more about biomedical engineering at RPI. Applicants and prospective students can also contact Elizabeth Harwood , senior student services administrator, for more information about degree programs in the department.
