  • IELTS Essays - Band 6

Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that develop the mind, such as reading and doing crossword puzzles. Others feel that it is important to give one’s mind a rest in leisure time. Discuss.

10th class leisure time essay for students

Some people want to relax after their day of work. These people may prefer to relax by watching movies, reading or getting a massage. People who have a such as doctors, teachers and builders may choose these types of activities. If you are a doctor, you may feel that you want to let your body rest after work and you don’t want to do a five kilometer run after work, because you are already physically tired.

On the other hand, some people choose to be active in their leisure time because they do . For example, these people many spend all day sitting on a chair and their work. At the end of a working day, they a backache, and all of their body tired so they need to stretch their arms and improve their health by doing some activity such as going to the gym or swimming.

To sum up, the important thing is that people want to stay healthy by choosing what is best for them. In my view, the wrong way is to stay at home in your leisure time if you have a job.

This essay needs work. It has the right structure and covers the task. However there are many poorly structured sentences, many of the sentences are too simple and don’t have enough complexity, there are grammatical errors and some prepositions are use incorrectly (see comments underlined in blue). Overall, this looks like a Band 6 – 6.5 essay.

Leisure Time: The Types of Activities Essay

Introduction, leisure time freedom, discipline during leisure time, extreme leisure activities.

Leisure time refers to the time in one’s life when one is free from the demands of his/her duties or studies. During this time, one is free to spend his/her time as he wills or as he deems right. Many people opt to spend this time having fun in different ways as a way of relieving the physical and mental stress accumulated during working hours. To some, this is an opportunity to visit friends and family. Whatever activity one chooses depends on one’s interest and the idea of having fun (Bull, et al., 2003).

Leisure time may however be confused for freedom to do anything during one’s free time. There are limits to which one can exercise during his free time. For instance, when one’s way of spending leisure interferes with someone else’s freedom, then there is definitely a limit.

The freedom that people have during their leisure time may be controlled in some cases depending on the level of engagement. Although leisure time refers to free time that one can spend in whatever way he/she wills, some form of control usually exists. For instance, teenagers’ leisure time has some form of control that comes in different ways. There are reasons why some people tend to have an inclination towards extreme sports. This paper covers these issues in detail and gives examples in relevant sections.

Freedom during leisure time refers to the ability to undertake any event for whatever length of time without any form of restrictions. This form of leisure time does not usually exist since there is always some form of control during leisure time. Though leisure time looks like a time when one can do what he/she wills for whatever length of time, this does not in practice exist. Some form of control usually exists for different individuals depending on age, cultural inclination, and length of time available (Harris, 2005).

Teenagers’ leisure times are always controlled lest they engage in destructive activities. Rules are set by parents in the type of activities they may engage and those that they may not engage in lest they get grounded. Teenagers are controlled from engaging in activities such as some very extreme sports, joining peer groups that are destructive and engaging in drugs and alcoholism. Parents on the other hand are limited by other activities which curtail the length of time they engage in leisure activities. For example, it is not possible for a couple to go fishing the whole day leaving their young children unattended.

There is always a compulsion to get back home and take care of the kids among other chores. Leisure time may be one’s free time but it is always controlled by other activities in terms of extent and time that it may continue (Bull, et al., 2003).

It is very important to have some form of control during leisure time. This applies to both the young and the old since discipline makes leisure time more enjoyable in the long run. Discipline ensures consistency during leisure activities while helping an individual maintain a healthy physique. Lack of discipline or some form of control can only lead to destructive engagement which may not be productive in the long run. Parents use some form of restrictive discipline on their children by setting limits that the children may extend as they enjoy their leisure time. On the other hand, parents exercise discipline and control during their free time to ensure that they set a good example for their children.

Discipline helps in controlling freedom as earlier discussed. Without discipline, people would tend to misuse the freedom they have during their free time. For example, lack of discipline when engaging in some extreme sports such as skateboarding may be very lethal and it is important for one to learn the rules of engaging in such sports (Harris, 2005).

Extreme sports are considered to be more lethal compared to other forms of spending leisure. There are many extreme sports today and it is advisable for one to be very careful when engaging in any of them. Enough practice is very necessary before engaging in any extreme sport. Usually, extreme sports that some people engage in, involve the public exhibitions of dangerous stunts as a way of spending leisure. For instance, skateboarding and mountain biking are two extreme sports that people engage in to get thrilled and for excitement.

People engage in extreme sports for different reasons during leisure time. The biggest contributor towards engaging in this type of extreme sports especially among teenagers is the influence of television and video games. Teenagers would always wish to practice what they watch. Others engage in this type of sport simply because they believe that it is the best way of relieving stress. When a person engages in extreme sports, more adrenaline is released which presents one of the best ways of getting rid of stress (Tamara, 2010). People, therefore, tend to engage in some extreme sports which they believe are more relaxing than ordinary leisure activities such as reading or watching.

Leisure time is very important to any individual. This is a time when a person is able to relieve him/herself of day stress accumulated during work or studies. People are always allowed to spend their leisure time in whatever way they want so long as they do not break the set ground rules which in a way curtail the freedom that some people may want to enjoy. It is important to have some form of control or discipline during leisure time. This applies especially when engaging in extreme sports which some people engage in for excitement and thrill.

Essay#22 | Leisure Time for Activities

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task..

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles. Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model answer.

It is generally accepted that we all need leisure time to recover from the stresses of work and everyday life. Personally, I prefer to be active during this time, as I think this suits me better. However, what we do with our leisure time is up to us and no one can say that any particular activity is the best.

Some people relax by watching movies, reading or surfing the internet. People who have physically demanding jobs may choose these types of activities. If you are a nurse or builder, you may feel that you don’t want to do a five-kilometer run after work, because you are already physically tired.

Other people do very sedentary jobs. Computer analysts, for example, may spend all day sitting in front of a computer screen. At the end of the working day, they may be keen to stretch their limbs and improve their health by swimming or going to the gym.

Another factor that influences our choice of leisure pursuits is where we work. People who work indoors often prefer outdoor hobbies, whereas, for people who work outdoors, the reverse may be true. I am a student myself and this involves a lot of sitting in lectures, so I need to get out into the fresh air afterward.

In any situation, the important thing is that people need to stay healthy by choosing what is best for them. The only wrong way to spend free time, in my view, is to have a sedentary job and then go home and watch television.

POINTS TO DEVELOP

  • Human beings have always been drawn to a pause in work to carry on some creative activity.
  • Modern times-extremely busy lives, leading to physical and psychological problems, because leisure is a forgotten entity.
  • Distraction from work as necessary as work,
  • Ways to spend leisure time.
  • Advent of television and leisure.
  • Abuses of leisure.
  • Balance between work and leisure essential.

Human beings, ever since they emerged in earth have primarily been occupied with trying to meet their basic needs of food and shelter. Scientific studies have revealed that during prehistoric times humans were mostly engaged in hunting animals for food or in protecting themselves from predators and the elements. But even in those difficult times, whatever free time was available seemed to naturally attract human beings to creative activity, a proof of which are the cave paintings from those days. Once human life became more organised and settlements and civilisations were established, leisure and activities carried out in leisure became a more regular feature of human life. Most of the artefacts, which today give us documentary evidence of past cultures and civilisations, are products of leisure.

In modern times, especially due to industrialisation, life has taken a different turn. While on the one hand life has become extremely busy, at the same time specialised areas of activity and fixed working hours offer the possibility of considerable free time. Leisure implies free or unoccupied time, when there is freedom from the demands of work or duty. The social structure has developed in such a manner that some sections of the society maintain rich lifestyles with plenty of leisure, whereas the majority 0f human beings are preoccupied with the battle for survival. Relaxation and leisure are words that seldom have any relevance to their life. These people live under constant stress and demands of modernity. Consequently, they are prone to physical and psychological problems. It is essential to spare some time from a mechanical routine and spend this time to rejuvenate the mind and the body.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Most of us are familiar with this phrase. It stresses the need for engagement in activities other than work for a complete development of human personality. Leisure and free time well spent are as essential as food and sleep.

Free time can be utilised in a variety of ways. Activities to suit all budgets, demands of space, and individual and social needs exist from which one can choose according to one’s inclination and interest. Reading is one of the most popular free time activities. A wide range of subjects and the existence of well-maintained libraries has made reading a very rewarding and affordable activity. From simple entertainment to highly specialised discourses, reading invariably contributes to one’s knowledge and helps widen one’s perspective. It is an inexpensive pastime that can be indulged virtually in any place. Other common activities are music, gardening, carpentry, cooking, etc. One can also choose from activities which are directly relevant to the society, like social work, caring for abandoned and stray animals, caring for the environment, etc. Activities in the areas enumerated above impart a sense of achievement besides giving meaning and purpose to life. Activities like carpentry, painting and clay-modelling help satisfy the creative impulse in many an amateur artist. Socialising is also a healthy activity and promotes goodwill and mutual understanding among people.

The field of sports offers a wide range of activities to choose from. It has the advantage of catering to physical fitness and thus helping to develop a healthy attitude towards life. Games and sports can be chosen according to one’s physical capacity. They encourage sportsmanship and an ability to accept defeat and victory gracefully.

Unfortunately, the advent of television has taken a heavy toll of other hobbies. Two of the worst affected activities are reading and healthy socialising. On the one hand, television has many advantages, but on the other hand it is a medium which can very easily be misused by both the viewers and the producers of programmes.

Leisure can easily be abused too. “An idle mind is a devil’s workshop.” Whiling away time in useless activities is the most common abuse of leisure. People often hang around commercial centers, cinema halls, restaurants and bus stops. Such behaviour can become almost addictive and discourages all creative potential. Idleness can force a person into bad company and even anti-social activities. It is thus essential to impart to children right from their early days the value of leisure and its meaningful use.

A balanced and sensible person will never make work alone an end. Relaxation of the mind and the body, awareness of one’s social responsibilities, and catering to one’s creative needs are traits of a healthy and complete personality. Many problems and crises associated with modern life can be successfully combated by proper utilisation of one’s free time. By coordinating one’s talents and faculties one can break the monotony of modern life and prevent life from becoming a burden.

Leisure: Uses and Abuses

The observation that “we must beat the iron when it is hot, but we may polish it at leisure”, best explains the proper relation between work and leisure. Leisure is like the margin on a printed or written page. “Leisure with honour” should be our guiding principle. A leisure is honourable when it is earned with the sweat of the brow. Leisure means free and unoccupied, or spare time for rest, recreation-and pursuits of pleasure. Leisure is a kind of breathing space, or a pause in the long hours of work and labour.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, is a well known saying. After long hours of work and struggle, we need moments of rest, relaxation, respite and a kind of short holiday. A little time devoted to regular diversion of the mind is bound to strengthen and refresh us for better achievements in our respective fields of occupation. With the introduction of scientific gadgets, machines, computers and automation, we are bound to have more and more leisure time. The five-day work a week gives people a lot of spare time to be spent for recreation, rest and intellectual pursuits. The housewife has also now much leisure as there are many labour-saving devices being used in households. Therefore, now all of us can enjoy long hours of leisure.

But many of us do not know how to make proper use of moments of leisure bestowed on us by scientific developments. For many of us leisure time is more boring and monotonous-than the daily routine occupation for our lack of knowledge as how to use free time profitably and productively. Leisure is like a two edged sword which can be either used or misused. Leisure never means idleness or lack of work. We can judge a person by the way he uses his leisure time. It never means frittering away the precious time of leisure in idle talking, gossiping, drinking, gambling or card playing. We should view the leisure time as a golden opportunity and use it for our intellectual, spiritual and aesthetic development. The proper use of spare time can help us a lot in shaping and developing our personality in a desired way. It is really bad if we spend leisure without any definite plan to have purposeful gains. It is, in fact, an abuse of leisure if we use it idly. Leisure time gives us a golden opportunity to satisfy our inner demands. By means of our regular occupations we satisfy our material and physical demands. Now, during leisure we can very well satisfy our social, cultural, aesthetic, intellectual and spiritual’ demands. We can devote our leisure time in reading and writing, in learning and practicing music, or in the pursuit of some creative and social activity.

We must analyse our resources, aptitude and bent of mind and select our leisure time activity. Once we have decided our aim and object to be achieved during these quiet and relaxed hours, we can make our leisure interesting, meaningful and worthwhile. We are cultured and sensible in proportion to the proper use we make of leisure. An idle mind is devil’s workshop. If we are idle in our leisure time, we turn into devil’s disciples. No sensible person would like to be called the Satan’s pupil. For good and intelligent people all cultural improvements arise from leisure. Leisure helps us in becoming whole, integrated and cultured men and women. During these precious golden moments of respite, we can stand and stare at things beautiful, ponder on the meaning of life and turn our life into a real asset and a thing of beauty and joy forever.

Only the unimaginative, dull, unfeeling and insensible person would complain of boredom and monotony during leisure. Leisure is not for mental dissipation, flirtation, idle gossip and killing of time, instead it is time for enrichment of our moral, intellectual and aesthetic sensibilities and energies. The human mind is like a mighty weapon, which can be made more effective by timely rest, polishing and refinement.

Therefore, it is no exaggeration if it is asserted that leisure affords us a golden chance for self-elevation.. self-culture, intellectual pursuits and aesthetics development. Leisure is also a sure guard against overwork, fatigue, monotony and greed of money. Overwork tells both upon mind and body. Those who do not have the healing touch of leisure are found easily irritable, unsocial, churlish and weighed down with the heaviness of their work. Present life is under so many pressure and tensions. In every field there is a cut-throat competition. Therefore, leisure has become all the more important and valuable. Leisure carried infinite advantages for all those who enter its realm in a right spirit and mood.

Leisure Time Essay

Leisure Essay-1

Leisure Time Essay – Introduction: Leisure is that sweetest of moments when a man has nothing specific to do. When he is his own master and can dispose of his spare time at his own suit will .

Meaning of leisure: Leisure does not refer to idleness or laziness but it refers to relief or relaxes for a short period from the monotony of daily routine. It is not a non-activity but it implies an activity which is meaningful, potential and enjoyable: It is for its own sake as it is a period of personal fulfillment and pleasure. It is, so to speak, freedom of monotony, boredom, and drudgery of life.

The present time is a time of automation, better standard of living and longevity has further broadened and liberalized the real conception of leisure. The strange and wonderful invention of science and technology has also reduced the hour of working and consequently man has now found a lot of time to enjoy leisure at his suit will. In fact, very few people are aware of making the proper utilization of leisure.

Different people spend it in different ways, They have no proper sense or idea of it due to their ignorance, whim or uncared habit. To many others, leisure is a time to make creative and aesthetic pursuit and inner fulfillment.

Today’s leisure: Today’s leisure is spent in various ways People are rightly found in spending their leisures, watching T.V. The craze and popularity of TV is increasing day by day. A great part of their time is spent not in manly thing but in viewing programs in the idle box.

Such a craze and popularity of T.V. has created many socials, psychological, physical, family, individual and mental problems. That’s why, leisure spent watching TV, enjoying cinema shows, and other lengthy interesting things may marginalize towards reading, social activities, and outdoor habits/hobbies to a great extent.

Source of enjoyment: Most men, therefore, find a life strenuous business. This is the tragedy of life, work and worry— both are equally unavoidable yet both are equally tiresome. The continuity of this chain has to be broken now and then to enable man to recover his freshness, to take mind off on a holiday. Leisure breaks upon the monotony of existence with a touch of variety.

Man’s life is usually bound by routine; leisure affords an opportunity to escape out of the compulsions of routine and breathe the fresh air of freedom. This is, therefore, always a source of joy whenever it comes. Life on earth is not an easy affair these days. The mere task of keeping the body and soul together strains resources to the utmost limit.

To live well one has to be incessantly toiling, just to earn the extra bit of money. Hence the problem of having a workfree period is difficult to solve. The best way to do it is to have a socialistic society where work is a rationed in term of social needs.

The enjoyable leisure: Truly speaking, leisure is enjoyable in relation to one’s work. After a day’s hard and toilsome work, one needs to enjoy leisure the most. In absence of work, no leisure can truly be conceived. Leisure is a kind of diversion which pre-supposes work and labor. Rest is much sweeter than honey and money after exertion and exhaustion.

Totem Our life: Our life is now more free and leisurely than our forefathers. Now people have found out to spend their leisure time. There are interesting serials, spicy films scientific music, dances, shows, plays various types of information weather forecasts, different types of interviews, analysis of events, happenings and Incidents and many other things at twenty-four hours of the day. There are many sources of channels to choose from.

Necessity: Man is under the necessity of leisure. After a tiresome work a period of leisure makes a man fresh, energetic, and stimulates him to finish the unfinished work. One can spend leisure i n taking snacks at a restaurant, tea, cofee and other edible things At leisure one can engage oneself in meditation and religious practice. The great men all over the world in the past and even at present spent and now spend their respective leisures in meditation in pursuit of knowledge, constructive ideas, benevolence for the well-being of mankind. Leisure in man’s life is as essential as food but its proper utilization in the fruitful way is wanted. The happiest man is, of course, he whose work is leisure, who finds a perpetual joy in the work he has to perform. To such a man work is never a soul killing drudgery.

Conclusion: Man cannot continue to work for all day long, He needs rest, race and leisure, for regaining energy, stimulation, and concentration for the next works.

How I Spend My Leisure Time Essay

I admit that I am a very busy person, but I still believe in finding time to unwind and do enjoyable things. I intentionally block off time for leisure in my calendar. I also make it a point to aside resources and plan meticulously to ensure I get maximum relaxation from it.

Leisure is important to mental and physical wellness and should be taken seriously. It is a conscious decision I make to ensure that I am able to experience it regularly. Taking time out renews my vigor to tackle the challenging tasks I come across daily, as I am able to take breaks to reflect on a few issues about life. I mostly plan my leisure time on the weekends so that I can make space for my family and friends.

This is a short description of how I spend my leisure breaks.

How I Make My Free Time Count

My favorite way to spend my leisure time would be to hang out with my friends at the beach. I enjoy the cool breeze from the ocean and watching people have fun on the shore. Walking along the shores of the beach calms my inner chaos. Occasionally, I collect seashells on the beach and bring them to my siblings. Most of these outdoor activities highly depend on how favorable the weather is.

I also make the effort to make calls to friends I am unable to physically visit and check in on. Sometimes, the walks alone can take up my whole afternoon.

Other times, I like listening to the music albums of my favorite artists as I stroll along the beach. When the weather is hot, I like swimming on the beach or joining my friends to go fishing in deeper waters. Recently, I tried scuba diving and I liked the experience. I hope that I get to try it again soon. The breathtaking view of the reef is amazing.

Sometimes, the weather confines me indoors, but that does not mean I cannot have a good leisure break.

If I am having my leisure getaway indoors, I like trying out new recipes and different cuisines from all over the world. Being busy in the kitchen trying out new dishes is enjoyable, to say the least. The meals don’t always turn out the way I expect them to, but the experience is always fun for me.

Alternatively, I like reading non-fiction books, particularly those that talk about historical events, while relaxing on the couch. I like doing this with soft jazz playing in the background as I peruse through the pages.

At times, I also go to the cinemas and theaters and catch up on the latest movies and plays with friends. There are times when I just want to stay at home and catch up on my go-to shows. I like playing dance games competitively with my brother especially when he is in town. Although he is a better dancer than I am, we both enjoy the dance and have fun together.

Giraffes Standing on Grass Field Surrounded by Plants

I also travel to Africa annually and go on safaris or hike in the mountains. The experience is always great – from socializing with people of different cultures to watching animal wildlife in their natural habitat. The days I spend in Africa leave indelible memories in my mind and encourage me to save up to return and experience more.

The activities I mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. I really like making the most out of my leisure breaks. All these experiences and memories push me to invest in rest.

I don’t know how you make use of your spare time, but I hope that you are using it well. It could simply be a matter of engaging in your hobbies, spending time with loved ones, soaking in nature, or even reading books. As long as it makes you feel happy and recharged by the time the next week rolls in, it is worth doing.

Different people have different kinds of preferences when it comes to maximizing their free time. There are so many activities to choose from – so there’s no excuse not to indulge in getaways for yourself.

Essay About A Leisure Time Activity

What do you do when you have so much free time that you can actually take extended time off?

I have had the blessing of enjoying a lot of free moments lately and it has given me the opportunity to get involved in the many things that give me joy. One of them is reading novels. I am a staunch fan of murder mysteries. I can never get enough breathers to go through them during a busy week at school, so my collection has been gathering dust at home. I have recently been able to finish two books each weekend, and I’m really enjoying it.

Another activity that I love doing is to write down my plans for the future. I don’t just mean plans for the next year. I like envisioning myself five or ten years from where I am and dreaming of what I’ll be able to accomplish by then.

Finally, I like playing games and indulging in recreational activities. Board games are a guilty pleasure for me. I recently rediscovered my love for classic Monopoly and word puzzles and have been challenging my family and friends for intense rematches on weekends.

What Are Popular Ways To Spend Leisure Time?

There are plenty of ways to wind down in your spare moments. There are those who get involved in competitive sports. Others want something more relaxing and simply hang out with family. More adventurous people travel to other parts of the world to experience and soak in another culture. Others write down their ideas. There are a rare few who spend days in the library looking to expand their knowledge on a certain topic or subject of interest. Then there are the more fun, casual, and popular group activities, such as karaoke, cocktails, hotel stays, and pampering trips.

Why Is Leisure Time Important?

Making space to relax and the wind is essential in making sure you can still excel in the other areas of your life. People say that rest is actually a life strategy. You don’t necessarily rest because you are lazy and don’t want to deal with your obligations. You get to rest for the ultimate good of those activities. It almost seems counterproductive, for example, to do a catnap the night before a heavy deadline. But ten minutes of sleep can actually re-energize your brain and refuel your creative juices so that you can power through the night and finish that requirement. Getting those breathers for yourself also protects you from burnout, which is a common ailment in today’s busy world where everything demands your time and attention. It gives you fresh starts, especially when you feel uninspired and stuck.

Essay on “leisure time according to me” for students and children, best essay, paragraph, speech for class 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.

Leisure Time According To Me

Leisure may be called as the spare time that is free from labour and hard work of life. Leisure never means laziness or idleness. It should be seen in a broader viewpoint, as a satisfying part of life. Thus, for me leisure is a kind of living space or a welcome and necessary break in the long hours of work. People with more wealth enjoy more leisure hours. They have more spare hours to release their exhaustion. However, all of us can enjoy hours of rest, relaxation, joy, change from routine and entertainment. Thus, leisure is a kind of assurance against dullness, fatigue and tensions of life. After hours of work and struggle, we need some rest, recreation, joy, break, freshness or holidays.

Leisure time helps me in keeping my body, mind and health refreshed. Some time devoted to my hobbies, reinforces me to achieve better. During my leisure hours, I spent a lot of spare time in simple and innocent joys of life and intellectual and artistic activities.

Leisure is like a double-edged sword, which can be either used well or misused. A person can be best judged by the way he or she uses the leisure hours. However, it never means wasting away the precious time in drinking, gambling or lazy gossiping. I view leisure as an excellent opportunity for healthy enjoyment, intellectual, spiritual, cultural and creative searches. I also pass my time playing with my friends, listening to stories from grandmother or simply by observing nature and birds.

The right use of leisure hours can help me in shaping and developing my personality in the desired way. Leisure provides me a rare opportunity to satisfy my inner demands. During leisure, I satisfy my artistic, cultural, intellectual and divine desires. I also devote my spare hours in reading, writing stories, playing a guitar or in the search of some meaningful activity. Once we have made a sensible selection, we can make our leisure really interesting, meaningful and valuable.

Different people spend leisure differently. Some may occupy themselves in gardening, photography, reading or playing outdoor or indoor games. Others may busy themselves in playing with children or in enjoying music. However, in modern times, viewing television is becoming more and more popular. In India, people like to spend their leisure time before their television sets, viewing films, popular serials or other programmes.

Leisure in itself is neither good nor bad. Its use makes it good or bad. Therefore, according to me, leisure with purpose and meaningfulness should be our aim. We must be alert and watchful against the abuse of leisure.

Essay on Leisure in English ( 300 words )

The human body is like a machine. It requires some rest after doing some work. This rest is usually known as leisure.

This world is full of stress and strain. The world in which we live in a busy world of hustle and bustle. All this has a heavy toll on our delicate nervous system. If we do not take rest or have some moments of leisure, we shall go mad.

It is for this reason that leisure is important in our life. Most of the people, however, do not know how to spend their moments of leisure. Some of them indulge in such activities as gambling, drinking, smoking, etc.

That is not the way to spend leisure time. Instead of such activities which are actually vices in the name of activities, we should have some of the other hobbies.

One should have a hobby according to one’s taste. One man may like to take up gardening as his hobby. Another person may have the aptitude for philately. Another one may prefer reading books, magazines or newspapers to any other hobby. Then there are so many other hobbies such as singing, dancing, painting, photography, visiting friends, watching movies or T.V. serials and so on.

A hobby should not be extended so extensively as to overshadow your work. An excessive time given to hobby is also not a wise step. The purpose of the hobby is to give you relief from the strain and boredom of the main work.

Generally, those whose work involves physical labour should have a hobby which is concerned with some intellectual activity, and those who do mental or intellectual work should have some hobby which involves some physical activity such as walking, playing some game, etc.

Essay on “Leisure-Its Uses and Abuses” for School, College Students, Long and Short English Essay, Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 12 and Competitive Exams.

Leisure-Its Uses and Abuses

Our forefathers lived in villages. They had only a few wants which could be met from the produce of the fields. There was no need to work hard throughout the year as in the present age. They had ample leisure to spend in games, gossip or meditation. They led simple and contented lives.

With the development of modern civilization, the wants of men have multiplied. There is an abnormal hurry in the pursuit of wealth. As a result man has become too busy. Whenever he is not working, he is busy in thinking and planning. So his body and mind gets very little rest. This has produced a great amount of stress and tension in the mod-ern man.

Naturally we welcome our leisure time, as this has be-come rather scarce. Leisure provides relaxation and this lengthens one’s life. In fact the more leisure a man enjoys, the longer is the life that he will have. If leisure is cut short, life will also become short. A man is really fortunate who is master of his own time and manages to get some leisure everyday to relax and dream his dreams for a short while. How unlucky and pitiable is a man who has to keep himself busy throughout the day and the best part of the night With-out any period of leisure. Thus leisure plays an important role in human life. As a poet has truly said.

‘What is this life, if full of care

We have no time to stand and stare’

But care should be observed how we use our leisure. Our character can be formed by the way we use our leisure. Many people become great only by devoting their leisure to selfless social work. That man alone can be said to be truly living who is something besides being what his daily work makes him. No one is great by his profession but he can become great by giving his leisure time to the service of society. This use of leisure can give us mental relief and satisfaction; can also bring public respect to us.

The second use of leisure should be to spend it in merry-making and enjoyment, best of all in the company of one’s friends. We would be making our lives short if we work even in the little amount of leisure we can snatch from our daily routine of life or do not enjoy the same to the fullest extent. It is right to do what we like in our leisure time, if we want to prepare ourselves for the next day’s battle of life.

Enjoyment should never be condemned. No argument can be advanced against rest and relaxation. Rest is a sponge to rub fatigue out. But care should be taken against misuse of the means of enjoyment. Suppose one enjoys taking drinks occasionally. So far so good. But one day this may become a part of the daily routine of his life and then it will become a vice which will be disliked by society and also bring ruin to himself and his family. Again, reading of books is a very good means of relaxation and mental enjoyment. But if one reads only low literature find light fiction he would only invite physical and mental degradation. In sorting out correct hobby and enjoyment lies the essence of the proper use of our leisure.

A person in a village used to teach little boys and girls in his spare time. Within a short period all the children of the village and the surrounding areas became proficient in the three R’s—reading, writing and arithmetic. The person did this good without even being aware of it. A good action is its reward. Thus there are so many modes of enjoyment which provide rest and relaxation and also does immense good to oneself and to the society at the same time.

The use of leisure always depends upon the amount of spare time one has at one’s disposal. Take the case of the poorer classes. They work hard throughout the day with very little wages and have very little leisure. So they want to enjoy and rest their body as much as they can during their periods of Leisure. And due to their lack of education and proper understanding they take to drinking cheap liquors which they think is the medicine to bring relief to their troubled minds and bodies.

There are, however, many cases, where people do not use their leisure properly, even if they have plenty of it. So we find bored young men from the richer classes indulging themselves in all sorts of vices in our country as well as in the countries of the West. The ‘hippie’ cult is the result of this boredom of life and misuse of one’s leisure.

The leisured classes, people who have very little to do to earn their livelihood, have heavy responsibility to the nation. They should not waste their spare time in mere sleeping and chatting and going to clubs. It will be a great national loss if one loses his leisure time in such petty trifles. We should know how to put our leisure to proper use.
