Narrative Essay Example: Water Park

You could feel the humidity, smell the food, and hear screams of delight. My family and I were at a humongous water park with over 25 slides. It was so huge I couldn’t even see half of the park. This water park was a part of an even larger hotel. The hotel had over 20 floors, plus the only way to get to this park would be to walk through a see-through tunnel over 300 feet above the ground. If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I never would have thought it would be possible for a hotel to have a water park. The size of this water park was even larger than the largest water park I had previously known, Raging Waters.

We quickly found a spot to put down our towels and started riding all of the biggest slides. The giant slides were all different. One of them towered over all of the others. I stood in amazement as my eyes widened and I gaped in awe at a bowl shaped part of the slide, where you could spin around. I got in the long line and started waiting. Finally, it was my turn. I almost fell off of the ride and had to pull myself back up. The others were just fast and short, but they were fun. My brothers and I went on some of the giant slides a couple of times but they weren’t fast enough for me, plus the wait wasn’t worth it.

Then, I spotted a wave pool from the corner of my eye, so my brothers and I dashed over. A sign said that every 20 minutes, giant waves for 5 minutes. We made the best of the 3 minutes that remained. Twenty minutes later, we returned with blown up rafts. After swimming and having fun for a few minutes, we came up with a game. A person had to try and stay on the raft while the other two people would try to flip the raft over. You would have to move fast enough to to move from side to side and keep the raft balanced. After the large waves stopped for the next 20 minutes, we left the wave pool, and went to go on some slides.

We decided to go on some medium sized slides, not wanting to wait in any more huge lines. However, before we were about to decide to go back to our hotel room, we came to a slide called the Canada Plunge. It was a normal slide, other than the 80-degree drop down. Plus, the only way to go down it was headfirst on a small blown up raft. I zoomed down the ride, at least going 20 miles per hour. After the first time, I couldn’t stop. It was so fun! I was addicted. Whenever I was going down the slide, I could hear the wind howling, which made me forget about everything else. It was like skiing down a huge hill. I rode the slide at least 5 more times. I couldn't get enough. I wanted to keep going, but I remembered that the wave pool was about to start again. Knowing we could go down that slide later, we decided to go to the wave pool again. We returned to the Canada Plunge and rotated from one to the other for the next couple hours, occasionally riding some of the other slides.

I was in the wave pool when I heard my parents say it’s time to go. I had assumed we were going to be able to stay the whole day, but apparently my parents had other plans. I was sad, but I remembered we would still have tomorrow. The next day we had even more things to do, such as going to Niagara Falls, and eating dinner at the rotating Skylon Tower, where we would enjoy our dinners 400 feet above the Niagara Falls, while enjoying a gorgeous 360 degree view. Sadly, I was never able to go back to that water park and ride the Canada Plunge again.

bodies moving swiftly through tubes/down slides, screams, laughter, conversation, parents yelling, kids crying, water dripping/splattering/splashing, staircases creaking, feet slapping on the pavement, feet splashing through puddles, piped-in music, wind whipping…

chlorine, bleach, water, sunblock, suntan oil, wet bathing suits and towels, food smells (hamburgers, fries, hot dogs, pizza, nachos), bubblegum, bug repellent, mildew

chlorinated water, sweat, sunblock, oil, hamburgers, fries, hot dogs, pizza, nachos, gum, bottled water, soda, candy bars, ice cream

pavement burning your feet, jumping from puddle to puddle to keep soles of feet from burning, slap of concrete against running feet, chafe of wet bathing suit, wedgie from big huge slide, water in your eyes, wet hair sticking to your neck, sunburn, sticky feel of…

Helpful hints:

–The words you choose can convey atmosphere and mood.

Example 1: I ran up the steep stairs behind Matt, ignoring how the gritty non-slip strips on the steps cut into my feet. Sure, they’d be sore tomorrow, but today all I cared about was getting in as many runs as I could on the Gut Buster. Both Matt and I planned on beating our previous summer’s record of forty trips down the triple diamond rated water slide…

–Similes and metaphors create strong imagery when used sparingly.

Example 1: (Simile) At the top, the green light flashed. Sean gave me the thumbs up and then threw himself into the rushing water like a thrill seeking body surfing down a waterfall…

Think beyond what a character sees, and provide a sensory feast for readers

Dear God — I HATE water slides, and my kids tormented me by insisting that I go on them… I swear this post made my hands sweat!

I love all the detail here: I’d totally forgotten about that farting sound almost-empty ketchup bottles make. And the smell of french fries wafting through chlorine-scented air…

Short Essay on Water [100, 200, 400 Words] With PDF

In this lesson today, I will discuss how exactly you can write short essays on the important topic ‘Water.’ There will be three sets of essays in this following session, each within different word limits.

Feature image of Short Essay on Water

Short Essay on Water in 100 Words

Every living being on the earth needs some basic things for its survival. It includes food, water, shelter, and money as well for humans. Water is by far the principal need of living beings. About two-third part of the earth is covered with water.

Water is available in several forms on earth. Some amount is frozen in glaciers, while the larger amount of water is salty. Fresh water on earth is very little. We need water for every purpose. Drinking, cooking, bathing, washing are the basic needs, while water is also used by bigger industries to run their machines. Water is an important source of electricity. So, being the most valuable resource water must never be wasted.

Short Essay on Water in 200 Words

Water is the most significant resource among everything that humans and animals can receive. Water helps a living being to live for longer days, even when food is scarce. It is one of the most beautiful gifts of nature. Water has enormous benefits and is the life of the earth. Its medicinal properties cure several ailments in our bodies. Without it, we cannot imagine living a second on earth. The world will be a huge desert if the water on earth is destroyed.

Our earth is unique in its creation. About two-third part of it is covered with water, while the rest of it is land. If we take a deeper study, then a major part of the water is either frozen as glaciers or is present in the oceans as saltwater. The reserve of fresh water on earth is a limited amount. It can exhaust at any moment. Hence we must spend water wisely. We need water for drinking, bathing, washing clothes and utensils, cooking, cultivating, etc.

Big industries require lots of water to run their machines. Today due to the scarcity of coal, hydroelectricity is the new way of generating electrical power. This process requires huge amounts of water. In several ways, water is our saviour. It is the beauty of nature as a wonderful waterfall or a stream, and also the help to a thirsty person.

Short Essay on Water in 400 Words

Water is the basic strength behind all life forces on earth. It is the necessity of every life and is the biggest shelter for us to survive. If there is no water suddenly on earth, then it will only be a lifeless planet filled with dust and stone.

The green earth will become a long stretch of a desert without this component. Water forms about two-thirds of the earth, while only one-third is given for the land. Yet how much greater the amount of water on earth be, the availability of fresh water on earth is the minimum.

A large amount of water is left unused. It is either frozen as glaciers or is present as salty ocean water. This water cannot be applied for regular usage. So we must understand the wise utilization of water. It is a scanty but most important resource. So only its proper utilization can make it sufficient.

Water is the source of all activities in our lives. From the olden days, human beings have always tried to live near water bodies. Because those places are fertile for cultivation. A vast desert-like Egypt also survives because of the river Nile. The Ganges in India is not only a water body but one of the most sacred rivers in the world. The most important use of water is in agriculture.

Every plant needs it to grow. If crops do not receive adequate water, then they will be stunted. We use water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing. A living body needs lots of water intake. Insufficient water intake can result in lots of ailments. Water is beneficial for this medical property. Besides these, all industries need water for producing electricity and running the turbines. Water is the potential of civilization. A civilization operates because of the availability of water

But at present, we are observing the pollution of water bodies. It is dangerous for all living beings to survive if all water sources are contaminated. Polluted water is a threat to the earth. Households, industries, insufficient cleanliness, lack of awareness, all are enough to increase pollution in several degrees. With increased consumption of water, it is being equally polluted. Thus many aquatic plants and animals, humans, other land animals are regularly dying after intaking the dirty water.

This is harming our ecosystem. So we must preserve freshwater. It is important and is available in little amount. Clean water can exhaust at any moment. It is our duty even to preserve the rainwater and use it. Every drop of water means life. A correct utility of it is the best way.

So, that was all about writing short essays on Water. In this session above, I have adopted a simplistic approach to writing all these essays for a better understanding of all kinds of students. Waterslide Decal FAQ's

Below are our most common questions about using waterslide decal papers. If something has gone wrong with your application see the Help My Decal Is Not Working section at the bottom of the page.

How do I apply a waterslide decal?

Please see our “Application Instructions” tab for detailed instructions. The instructions vary slightly between laser and inkjet papers.

What is the optimal water temperature for soaking a decal?

Between 77°F -  86°F or 25°C-30°C. If the water is cooler it may take longer to release from the backing.

What’s the difference between the transparent decal and the white waterslide decal?

The clear or transparent decal is see through so the base color of your object will show through your printed design. This is good for glass, stainless steel or light colored objects. If you do not want your base material to show through the design a white waterslide will be better. The white decal has an opaque base color and is great for applying onto darker surfaces. We created a Youtube video to help show you the difference.

Can I use laser waterslide paper on an inkjet printer?

No, you must match the printer type to the paper type. For example use inkjet waterslide paper with an inkjet printer.

Can I cut The waterslide paper with my Cricut or machine cutter?

What is the waterslide decal paper thickness paper weight?

The total paperweight is 210 microns or 200 GSM.

What Waterslide paper should I use with a DeskJet printer?

Use inkjet waterslide decal paper.

What programs would you suggest for designing water slide decals?

You can use many different types of programs for designing decals. For basic text or images you can use Microsoft Word, for photos you can use the photo editing programs that come with your computer, machine cutters like Circuit come with design software that can be used to edit and resize a design. You can use paid programs like Canva or Adobe Photoshop for more complex designs. We recommend saving your finished decal to 300DPI print resolution for best results.

Are Waterslide decals permanent?

No, they are recommended more for decorative uses and can be sealed to offer a more permanent solution. More on that below.

Is the waterslide decal dishwasher safe?

No, once applied to ceramics it is not dishwasher safe and must be hand washed. Do not use abrasive brushes or sponges. No soaking and no use of harsh cleaning chemicals.

Is the waterslide decal microwave safe?

No, waterslide decals are not made to withstand high heat. We don't recommend you put your decal or sealed decal in the microwave.

Are decals food safe?

The decals are recommended more for decorative purposes and we do not recommend placing them in contact with food or liquid that you consume.

How can I permanently seal waterslide decals?

There are a few options and it depends what you are sealing over. If the decals are more for decorative use, like a glass block you can seal them with two coats of clear acrylic spray. We recommend Rust-Oleum 2 X Clear. Mod Podge can also be used and has a really long cute time to be considered dishwasher safe.

For sealing decals on tumblers you can use epoxy or a non-epoxy sealant called Crystalac. You can try 2K urethane although it is an expensive option for a single tumbler.

190 lacquer and transparent varnishes should work too but we recommend patch testing before applying to an entire project.

Please note all these sealants require proper safety equipment as some contain harmful chemicals. We recommend you follow the manufacturer's safety instructions when handling.

Is curing waterslide paper in an oven necessary?

No. Baking waterslide decals in an oven  just helps speed up the curing process. Waterslide decals can and will cure naturally when left to dry in about 24-48 hours.

How do you remove a waterslide decal once it is dry?

Once cured it can be a bit difficult to remove waterslide decals. Try soaking in hot water, you can scrape it off while it is soaking or you could also use the product Goo Gone to remove the decal. For a natural removal alternative, try soaking the decal in vinegar.

What sealant or acrylic spray should I use to seal waterslide decals?

Firstly, only Inkjet waterslide decals must be sealed. Laser waterslide decals do NOT need to be sealed. We recommend using Rustoleum 2X Clear to seal waterslides and have tested several other sealants on our blog post; The Best Clear Sealants To Use On Waterslide Decal Paper . Any clear acrylic spray should work to seal decals but setting times vary so follow the manufacturer's instructions. We recommend using three, even layers of acrylic spray before soaking the decal.

How long should you leave the printed paper to cure or dry before applying to the surface?

Waterslide paper performs differently under different weather and humidity conditions. If the room temperature is lower than 68°F/ 20°C or humidity is more than 40%, the ink on the paper and or the acrylic spray may take longer to dry than before. If conditions aren’t ideal in where you live, you can use a hair dryer on high heat to help expedite the process. Set the hair dryer on high and hold the hair dryer 10-12” from the paper and move across the paper evenly for 10 minutes. You may need to clip or weigh down the paper to avoid it blowing away.

Can I epoxy over a decal?

Yes, many of our customers seal waterslide decals permanently using epoxy resins. Make sure the decal is fully dry (48 hours) before applying epoxy. Follow the manufacturer's cure times and use the recommended safety equipment as many of these epoxies contain harmful chemicals.

What is the natural cure time for waterslide decal paper once applied to a surface?

Dry out of direct sunlight for 36-48 hours. If the climate you live in is warmer 36 hours if cooler 48 hours.  You can speed up the natural cure time by using a hair dryer on high heat for 10 minutes. Hold the hair dryer 10-12” from the surface and move across the design evenly. Please note this is only recommended on surfaces such as ceramic, wood, metal or thick plastics (other materials like candles may melt).

What type of printer ink is the best to use with decal paper?

Pigment or dye inks  both work well.

Can waterslide decals be fired on porcelain, china or ceramics ?

No, unfortunately not.* The cure temperature should be under 390 Fahrenheit 200 degrees celsius. Fired-on Images sell a ceramic decal or you can contact your local pottery shop to ask for their product recommendations.

*We do have a customer that uses our Laser clear paper in the ceramic Kiln. They take a fully glazed, fired piece and transfer a decal onto it.  They use a toner with 40% ferrite, when they fire the piece again (to a lower temp) everything burns out except the iron. The glaze re-melts, the ferrite sinks into the glaze a little, and everything cools. The iron image is permanent and food safe. We can not guarantee this will work as each ceramic glaze and kiln is different but you could purchase a sample to test it and see if it works. Let us know how it goes!

Can waterslide decals be used on wood surfaces?

Waterslide decals can only be applied to watertight or well sealed wood. It can not be applied to naked wood or unsealed wood because the decal uses water to activate and wood expands and contracts when wet so it can cause the decal to dry and distort. We recommend you do a test patch before applying to a finished project to make sure it will work without damaging the sealed wood.

Is waterslide decal paper recyclable?

There are multiple layers to waterslide decal paper. The "decal" layer may contain ink and any type of sealant coat you applied to it and will not be recyclable. The dextrose or "sticky" layer will wash off and dissolve as it is sugar based. The paper backing can be washed and recycled into your paper recycling bin.

Is waterslide paper biodegradable or compostable?

No, we do not  recommend composting any of this paper as it has been treated with coatings that are not biodegradable. Once you remove the decal the paper backing can be washed and recycled. The decal film or bonded decal should go in the regular trash bin.

Can you screen print solvent based inks onto the decal paper?

No, we do not recommend this.

Once the waterslide decal is removed, what kind of backing is it?

PE composite chrome paper

Is waterslide decal paper vegan?

Yes, there are no animal products used in the ingredients.

Can you use eco-solvent Inks on Waterslide Decals or Vinyls?

No, unfortunately not at this stage. The ink would smear and would damage the printer

Can you use waterslide decals to make temporary tattoos?

Unfortunately not, we do not recommend these for skin, just objects. We hope to have some skin specific tattoo paper soon, stay tuned.

How do I make the colors more vibrant on a clear Waterslide decal?

Due to the clear nature of the decal, lighter colors can appear less vibrant than darker ones in a design. There are few things you can consider trying to get a more vibrant color. You can change the colors on your design to be a bit darker or more saturated to help counterbalance this in the colors you think are coming out too light. For example if a yellow is printing too light you can make the yellow on your design darker or a deeper yellow to get the desired effect.

Another tip is to layer two clear decals over each other which lifts the vibrancy. We have a You tube video showing this, check it out .

Finally, consider if a white decal would be better for your application. White decals have an opaque background so colors show up accurately on the white background. If you’re not sure the difference between the two you can check out this video .

Can acetone be used on waterslide decals?

No, we do not recommend using acetone based products on our decals.

Can you print Waterslide decals using an ALPS printer?

An ALPS printer is neither an inkjet printer or laser printer so due to it being a completely different type of printer and thermal base, we do not recommend using it with our waterslide decal papers. However you can, at your own risk, test the decal paper or use other people's print recommendations for ALPS printers using waterslide papers.

How should I store my waterslide decal paper?

Store unused paper in a cool, dry area, out of direct sunlight

Help My Decal Is Not Working

Waterslide paper curling once applied

If a decal is applied to a sealed surface the decal should not be curling or peeling off. If it is curling there are two things to check. The first is whether the surface you are applying to is watertight/ waterproof? If it is not waterproof, for example unsealed wood, that surface will absorb the water from the decal and it will not adhere to the surface. The second thing to check is whether you have applied the decal the correct way around. The decal should be applied to the surface with the sticky side (where the paper was removed) against the surface. If you reverse the decal the adhesive side will be on the outside and so will not adhere to the surface.

Backing Not Peeling

There are a few things that may cause the packing not to slide from the decal. The most common is the time left in the water. Although the recommended time that a decal should slide off is 30-60 seconds, water temperature and other factors can affect the slide time. Be patient and leave the decal submerged until it begins to slide, test by gently rubbing it between your thumb and fingers. If it doesn’t slide after 5 minutes, the problem is something else. The best water temperature is  77°F-  86°F or 25°C-30°C.

The common mistake people make is cutting and sealing the decal, rather than sealing the decal while it is still part of the larger sheet of paper. Spraying the edges of a decal with sealant can cause it to glue together and make it not slide when it is submerged in water.

The Ink is running

Make sure you are using an inkjet printer with the inkjet paper or a laser paper with a laser printer. The paper will not work correctly if the wrong printer is used.

Laser waterslide decal paper does not need to be sealed but the inkjet paper MUST be sealed with a clear acrylic spray three times otherwise the inks will run. Not all sealants are created equally and are often the cause of running inks. If you do not follow the manufacturer's dry time they may not be watertight and so the ink will run. We recommend  using Rustoleum 2X Clear sealant.

If you have cut your decal too close to the printed edge it may break the seal of the decal and cause the ink to run. We recommend leaving a 1-3mm border around your decal to avoid ink running.

The decal has turned into a blob or goop

Most likely if your decal has gone mushy it has either been submerged for way too long in water or there is a problem with the sealant (if you used one). To avoid over soaking a decal you can feel with your fingers when it starts to slide off the backing. When it moves, it is ready to be placed on your surface (normally 30-60 seconds).

If you sealed your inkjet decal and it has gone mushy in water, it could be your sealant. When testing some sealants for our blog, some didn’t work well when soaked in water.  Our favorite sealant is Rustoleum 2X Clear sealant.

The decal is cracking

Usually this is an issue with the clear acrylic sealant you have used, not the paper. It may be that the sealant has not dried fully before submerging the decal or it may not be a suitable sealant.  We recommend sealing our decals with Rustoleum 2X Clear sealant or using one of the recommended ones on our blog post .

  • 9 Steps to create photo essays

How to share your photo essays

Read Time: 11 minutes

Gather up a handful of images that seem to go together, and voila! It’s a photo essay, right? Well… no. Though, this is a common misconception.

In reality, a photo essay is much more thoughtful and structured than that. When you take the time to craft one, you’re using skills from all facets of our craft – from composition to curation.

In this guide, you’ll learn what makes a photo essay an amazing project that stretches your skills. You'll also learn exactly how to make one step by step.

  • Photo essay vs photo story

A photo essay is a collection of images based around a theme, a topic, a creative approach, or an exploration of an idea. Photo essays balance visual variety with a cohesive style and concept.

What's the difference between a photo essay and a photo story?

The terms photo essay and photo story are often used interchangeably. Even the dictionary definition of “photo essay” includes using images to convey either a theme or a story.

But in my experience, a photo essay and a photo story are two different things. As you delve into the field of visual storytelling, distinguishing between the two helps you to take a purposeful approach to what you’re making .

The differences ultimately lie in the distinctions between theme, topic and story.

Themes are big-picture concepts. Example: Wildness

Topics are more specific than themes, but still overarching. Example : Wild bears of Yellowstone National Park

Stories are specific instances or experiences that happen within, or provide an example for, a topic or theme. Example: A certain wild bear became habituated to tourists and was relocated to maintain its wildness

Unlike a theme or topic, a story has particular elements that make it a story. They include leading characters, a setting, a narrative arc, conflict, and (usually) resolution.

With that in mind, we can distingush between a photo essay and a photo story.

Themes and Topics vs Stories

A photo essay revolves around a topic, theme, idea, or concept. It visually explores a big-picture something .

This allows a good deal of artistic leeway where a photographer can express their vision, philosophies, opinions, or artistic expression as they create their images.

A photo story  is a portfolio of images that illustrate – you guessed it – a story.

Because of this, there are distinct types of images that a photo story uses that add to the understanding, insight, clarity and meaning to the story for viewers. While they can certainly be artistically crafted and visually stunning, photo stories document something happening, and rely on visual variety for capturing the full experience.

A photo essay doesn’t need to have the same level of structured variety that a photo story requires. It can have images that overlap or are similar, as they each explore various aspects of a theme.

An urban coyote walks across a road near an apartment building

Photo essays can be about any topic. If you live in a city, consider using your nature photography to make an essay about the wildlife that lives in your neighborhood .

The role of text with photos

A photo story typically runs alongside text that narrates the story. We're a visual species, and the images help us feel like we are there, experiencing what's happening. So, the images add significant power to the text, but they're often a partner to it.

This isn’t always the case, of course. Sometimes photo stories don’t need or use text. It’s like reading a graphic novel that doesn’t use text. Moving through the different images that build on each other ultimately unveils the narrative.

Photo essays don’t need to rely on text to illuminate the images' theme or topic. The photographer may use captions (or even a text essay), or they may let the images speak for themselves.

Definitions are helpful guidelines (not strict rules)

Some people categorize photo essays as either narrative or thematic. That's essentially just calling photo stories “narrative photo essays” and photo essays “thematic photo essays.”

But, a story is a defined thing, and any writer/editor will tell you themes and topics are not the same as stories. And we use the word “story” in our daily lives as it’s defined. So, it makes far more sense to name the difference between a photo essay and a photo story, and bask in the same clarity writers enjoy .

Photo stories illustrate a particular experience, event, narrative, something that happened or is happening.

Photo essays explore an idea, concept, topic, theme, creative approach, big-picture something .

Both photo essays and photo stories are immensely powerful visual tools. And yes, the differences between them can certainly be blurred, as is always the case with art.

Simply use this distinction as a general guideline, providing extra clarity around what you’re making and why you're making it.

Meanwhile, let’s dig deeper into photo essays.

Photo essays are a chance to try new styles or techniques that stretch your skills and creativity. This image was part of an essay exploring simplicity and shape, and helped me learn new skills in black and white post-processing.

How photo essays improve your photography

Creating photo essays is an amazing antidote if you’ve ever felt a lack of direction or purpose in your photography. Photo essays help build your photographic skills in at least 3 important ways.

1. You become more strategic in creating a body of work

It's easy to get stuck in a rut of photographing whatever pops up in front of you. And when you do, you end up with a collection of stand-alone shots.

These singles may work fine as a print, a quick Instagram post, or an addition to your gallery of shots on your website. But amassing a bunch of one-off shots limits your opportunities as a photographer for everything from exhibits to getting your work published.

Building photo essays pushes you to think strategically about what you photograph, why, and how. You're working toward a particular deliverable – a cohesive visual essay – with the images you create.

This elevates your skills in crafting your photo essay, and in how you curate the rest of your work, from galleries on your website to selecting images to sell as prints .

2. You become more purposeful in your composition skills

Composition is so much more than just following the rule of thirds, golden spirals, or thinking about the angle of light in a shot.

Composition is also about thinking ahead in what you’re trying to accomplish with a photograph – from what you’re saying through it to its emotional impact on a viewer – and where it fits within a larger body of work.

Photo essays push you to think critically about each shot – from coming up with fresh compositions for familiar subjects, to devising surprising compositions to fit within a collection, to creating compositions that expand on what’s already in a photo essay.

You’re pushed beyond creating a single pleasing frame, which leads you to shoot more thoughtfully and proactively than ever.

(Here’s a podcast episode on switching from reactive shooting to proactive shooting.)

3. You develop strong editing and curation skills

Selecting which images stay, and which get left behind is one of the hardest jobs on a photographer’s to-do list. Mostly, it’s because of emotional attachment.

You might think it’s an amazing shot because you know the effort that went into capturing it. Or perhaps when you look at it, you get a twinge of the joy or exhilaration you felt the moment you captured it. There’s also the second-guessing that goes into which of two similar images is the best – which will people like more? So you’re tempted to just show both.

Ultimately, great photographers appear all the more skilled because they only show their best work. That in and of itself is a skill they’ve developed through years of ruthlessly editing their own work.

Because the most powerful photo essays only show a handful of extraordinary images, you’re bound to develop the very same critical skill (and look all the more talented because of it).

Photo essays are also a great stepping stone to creating photo stories. If you’re interested in moving beyond stand-alone shots and building stories, shooting photo essays will get your creative brain limbered up and ready for the adventure of photo stories.

An american dipper looks into the water of a stream on a cold morning

A photo essay exploring the natural history of a favorite species is an exciting opportunity for an in-depth study. For me, that was a photo essay on emotive images of the American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) as it hunts in streams.

9 Simple steps to create your photo essays

1. clarify your theme.

Choose a theme, topic, or concept you want to explore. Spend some time getting crystal clear on what you want to focus on. It helps to write out a few sentences, or even a few paragraphs noting:

  • What you want the essay to be about
  • What kinds of images you want to create as part of it
  • How you’ll photograph the images
  • The style, techniques, or gear you might use to create your images
  • What “success” looks like when you’re done with your photo essay

You don’t have to stick to what you write down, of course. It can change during the image creation process. But fleshing your idea out on paper goes a long way in clarifying your photo essay theme and how you’ll go about creating it.

2. Create your images

Grab your camera and head outside!

As you’re photographing your essay, allow yourself some freedom to experiment. Try unusual compositions or techniques that are new to you.

Stretch your style a little, or “try on” the style of other photographers you admire who have photographed similar subjects.

Photo essays are wonderful opportunities to push yourself outside of your comfort zone and grow as a photographer.

Remember that a photo essay is a visually cohesive collection of images that make sense together. So, while you might stretch yourself into new terrain as you shoot, try to keep that approach, style, or strategy consistent.

Don’t be afraid to create lots of images. It’s great to have lots to choose from in the editing process, which comes up next.

3. Pull together your wide edit

Once you’ve created your images, pull together all the images that might make the cut. This could be as many as 40-60 images. Include anything you want to consider for the final essay in the wide edit.

From here, start weeding out images that:

  • are weaker in composition or subject matter
  • stand out like a sore thumb from the rest of the collection
  • Are similar to other stronger images in the collection

It's helpful to review the images at thumbnail size. You make more instinctive decisions and can more easily see the body of work as a whole. If an image is strong even at thumbnail size to stand out from similar frames while also partnering well with other images in the collection, that's a good sign it's strong enough for the essay.

4. Post-process your images for a cohesive look

Now it’s time to post-process the images. Use whatever editing software you’re comfortable with to polish your images.

Again, a photo essay has a cohesive visual look. If you use presets, filters, or other tools, use them across all the images.

5. Finalize your selection

It’s time to make the tough decisions. Select only the strongest for your photo essay from your group of images.

Each image should be strong enough to stand on its own and make sense as part of the whole group.

Many photo essays range from 8-12 images. But of course, it varies based on the essay. The number of images you have in your final photo essay is up to you.

Remember, less is more. A photo essay is most powerful when each image deserves to be included.

6. Put your images in a purposeful order

Create a visual flow with your images. Decide which image is first, and build from there. Use compositions, colors, and subject matter to decide which image goes next, then next, then next in the order.

Think of it like music: notes are arranged in a way that builds energy, or slows it down, surprise listeners with a new refrain, or drop into a familiar chorus. How the notes are ordered creates emotional arcs for listeners.

How you order your images is similar.

Think of the experience a viewer will have as they look at one image, then the next, and the next. Order your images so they create the experience you want your audience to have.

7. Get feedback

The best photographers make space for feedback, even when it’s tough to hear. Your work benefits from not just hearing feedback, but listening to it and applying what you learn from it.

Show your photo essay to people who have different sensibilities or tastes. Friends, family members, fellow photographers – anyone you trust to give you honest feedback.

Watch their reactions and hear what they say about what they’re seeing. Use their feedback to guide you in the next step.

8. Refine, revise, and finalize

Let your photo essay marinate for a little while. Take a day or two away from it. Then use your freshened eyes and the feedback you received from the previous step to refine your essay.

Swap out any selects you might want to change and reorder the images if needed.

9. Add captions

Even if you don’t plan on displaying captions with your images, captioning your images is a great practice to get into. It gives context, story, and important information to each image. And, more than likely, you will want to use these captions at some point when you share your photo essay, which we dive into later in this article.

Add captions to the image files using Lightroom, Bridge, or other software programs.

Create a document, such as a Google or Word doc, with captions for each image.

In your captions, share a bit about the story behind the image, or the creation process. Add whatever makes sense to share that provides a greater understanding of the image and its purpose.

Two rocks sit near each other on a wind-blown beach with long lines of texture in the sand

Photo essays allow you to explore deliberate style choices, such as a focus on shapes, patterns, textures, and lines. Since each photo is part of a larger essay, it encourages you to be bold with choices you might not otherwise make.

5 Examples of amazing nature photo essays

1. “how the water shapes us” from the nature conservancy.

Screenshot of the landing page of photo essay how the water shapes us from nature conservancy

This gorgeous essay, crafted with the work of multiple photographers, explores the people and places within the Mississippi River basin. Through the images, we gain a sense of how the water influences life from the headwater all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Notice how each photographer is tasked with the same theme, yet approaches it with their own distinct style and vision. It is a wonderful example of the sheer level of visual variety you can have while maintaining a consistent style or theme.

2. “A Cyclist on the English Landscape” from New York Times’ The World Through A Lens series

Screenshot of the landing page of photo essay a cyclist on the english landscape from new york times

This photo essay is a series of self-portraits by travel photographer Roff Smith while “stuck” at home during the pandemic. As he peddled the roads making portraits, the project evolved into a “celebration of traveling at home”. It’s a great example of how visually consistent you can be inside a theme while making each image completely unique.

3. “Vermont, Dressed In Snow” from New York Times’ The World Through A Lens series

Screenshot of the landing page of photo essay vermont, dressed in snow from new york times

This essay by aerial photographer Caleb Kenna uses a very common photo essay theme: snow. Because all images are aerial photographs, there’s a consistency to them. Yet, the compositions are utterly unique from one another. It’s a great example of keeping viewers surprised as they move from one image to the next while still maintaining a clear focus on the theme.

4. “Starling-Studded Skies” from bioGraphic Magazine

Screenshot of the landing page of photo essay starling-studded-skies from biographic magazine

This beautiful essay is by Kathryn Cooper, a physicist trained in bioinformatics, and a talented photographer. She used a 19th century photographic technique, chronophotography, to create images that give us a look at the art and science of starling murmurations. She states: “I’m interested in the transient moments when chaos briefly changes to order, and thousands of individual bodies appear to move as one.” This essay is a great example of deep exploration of a concept using a specific photographic technique.

This photo essay from conservation photographer Carla Rhodes explores the wildlife that takes advantage of the bounty of food waiting under bird feeders . Using remote camera photography , Rhodes gives viewers a unique ground-level perspective and captures moments that make us feel like we’re in conversation with friends in the Hundred Acre Woods. This essay is a great example of how perspective, personality, and chance can all come into play as you explore both an idea and a technique.

25 Ideas for creative photo essays you can make

  • The many shapes of a single species (a tree species, a bird species, etc)
  • How a place changes over time
  • The various moods of a place

As you zero in on a photo essay theme, consider two things: what most excites you about an idea, and what about it pushes you out of your comfort zone. The heady mix of joy and challenge will ensure you stick with it.

Your photo essay is ready for the world! Decide how you’d like to make an impact with your work. You might use one or several of the options below.

1. Share it on your website

Create a gallery or a scrollytelling page on your website. This is a great way to drive traffic to your website where people can peruse your photo essay and the rest of the photography you have.

Putting it on your website and optimizing your images for SEO helps you build organic traffic and potentially be discovered by a broader audience, including photo editors.

2. Create a scrollytelling web page

If you enjoy the experience of immersive visual experiences, consider making one using your essay. And no, you don’t have to be a whiz at code to make it happen.

Shorthand helps you build web pages with scrollytelling techniques that make a big impression on viewers. Their free plan allows you to publish 3 essays or stories.

3. Create a Medium post

If you don’t have a website and want to keep things simple, a post on Medium is a great option.

Though it’s known for being a platform for bloggers, it’s also possible to add images to a post for a simple scroll.

And, because readers can discover and share posts, it’s a good place for your photos to get the attention of people who might not otherwise come across it.

4. Share it on Instagram

Instagram has changed a lot over the last couple of years, but it’s still a place for photographers to share their work thoughtfully.

There are at least 3 great ways to share your photo essay on the platform.

– Create a single post for each image. Add a caption. Publish one post per day until the full essay is on your feed. Share each post via Instagram Stories to bring more attention and interaction to your photo essay.

– Create a carousel post. You can add up 10 photos to a carousel post, so you may need to create two of them for your full photo essay. Or you might create a series of carousel posts using 3-4 images in each.

– Create a Reel featuring your images as a video.  The algorithm heavily favors reels, so turning your photo essay into a video experience can get it out to a larger audience.

I ran a “create a reel” challenge in my membership community. One member created a reel with her still images around a serious conservation issue. It gathered a ton of attention and landed her opportunities to share her message through YouTube and podcast interviews and publishing opportunities. Watch it here.

5. Exhibit it locally

Reach out to local galleries, cafes, pubs, or even the public library to see if they’re interested in hanging your photo essay for display. Many local businesses and organizations happily support the work of local artists.

6. Pitch your photo essay to publications

One of the best ways to reach an audience with your work is to get it published. Find publications that are a great fit for the theme and style of your photo essay, then pitch your essay for consideration. You gain a fantastic opportunity to share your work widely and can earn a paycheck at the same time.

Remember that if you want to get your photo essay published, you may want to hold back from sharing it publicly before you pitch it to publications.

Water Source of Life Essay in 200 Words

Water is an essential element for the existence of life on our planet. It is not only important for human survival but also plays a crucial role in sustaining all living organisms. The significance of water as a source of life cannot be overstated.

Water serves as a medium for several biological processes. It helps in the breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients, and elimination of waste products from our bodies. Without water, these vital functions would cease to occur, leading to the demise of all life forms.

Furthermore, water acts as a habitat for various organisms. It supports a wide range of aquatic life, including fish, marine mammals, and countless microscopic organisms. These creatures not only depend on water for survival but also serve as a crucial part of our ecosystem, contributing to the overall balance of our planet.

Water also has the power to shape the natural landscape. Through erosion and weathering, it sculpts mountains, carves valleys, and creates impressive formations like canyons. These natural wonders, formed over millions of years, are a testament to the enduring force of water.

In addition to its biological and geological importance, water is also essential for social and economic development. Water is essential for our survival. It is the foundation of all life forms, from the tiniest microorganisms to the largest mammals. We, humans, are composed mostly of water, with it making up about 60% of our bodies. It regulates our body temperature, aids digestion, transports nutrients, and flushes out toxins. Without water, life as we know it would cease to exist.

Furthermore, water sustains the planet’s ecosystems. It provides a habitat for countless species of plants and animals, creating a delicate balance that ensures biodiversity. Rivers, lakes, and wetlands are home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, whose existence is interdependent on water availability. Additionally, aquatic environments play a crucial role in maintaining the overall climate balance through evaporation and precipitation.

Water is also a source of solace and tranquility. It has a soothing effect on our minds and can bring a sense of peace and serenity. The sound of crashing waves, the gentle flow of a river, or the soft pitter-patter of rain can be incredibly calming. In conclusion, water is undoubtedly the source of life. It sustains our bodies, supports diverse ecosystems, and brings peace to our souls. Water Source of Life Essay in 350 Words

Water is the source of all life on Earth. It is a vital element that sustains every living creature, from microorganisms to plants, animals, and humans. With approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface covered by water, it plays a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of our planet’s ecosystems. In this essay, we will take a descriptive journey into the significance and beauty of water as the ultimate source of life.

Firstly, water is essential for the survival of all living organisms. Its presence is directly linked to the existence and prosperity of various ecosystems. From the depths of the ocean to the highest peaks of mountains, water can be found everywhere, adapting to different forms such as lakes, rivers, and glaciers. It sustains an abundance of diverse species, providing them with hydration, nourishment, and a habitat to thrive.

Furthermore, water acts as a natural purifier and regulator of Earth’s climate. It cleanses our environment by cycling through the processes of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, ensuring the continuation of life. In addition, water significantly contributes to climate regulation by absorbing heat from the sun. This controls the Earth’s temperature, preventing extreme fluctuations and creating favorable conditions for life to flourish.

Not only is water integral to our physical well-being, but it also holds immense aesthetic value. Its tranquil and mesmerizing presence brings a sense of calm, serenity, and beauty to our surroundings. From the soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore to the picturesque views of lakes reflecting the skies, water has the power to evoke emotions and create an enchanting environment.

In conclusion, water is the ultimate source of life. Its necessity for the existence of all living organisms, its ability to regulate climate, and its aesthetic appeal collectively emphasize its incomparable value. As stewards of this precious resource, it is our responsibility to protect and preserve water to ensure the sustainability and well-being of future generations. Let us cherish and respect the water that has gifted us life.

Water Source of Life Essay in 400 Words

Water, often described as the source of life, is an essential element for the existence and sustenance of all living organisms on Earth. Its abundance and significance cannot be undermined. Our planet, covered mostly with water, showcases the magnitude of its importance. From the smallest microorganism to the largest mammal, every life form has a profound connection with water.

From the moment we come into this world, water plays an integral role in our lives. It is the fundamental component of our bodies, making up approximately 60% of our weight. It serves vital functions such as regulating body temperature, aiding in digestion, and carrying nutrients to our cells. Without water, our bodies would fail to function properly, leading to dehydration and ultimately death.

Furthermore, water serves as a habitat for numerous species, creating an ecological balance that sustains life on Earth. The oceans, for instance, are home to an abundance of marine life, including millions of unique species, some of which remain undiscovered. Not only does water provide shelter and a source of food for these creatures, but it also plays a critical role in maintaining their lives through various natural cycles.

Moreover, water is essential to the growth and survival of vegetation and agriculture. Through the process of photosynthesis, water enables plants to convert sunlight into energy, facilitating their growth. It acts as a transport system, delivering nutrients and minerals from the soil to the plant’s cells. Without water, lush green landscapes, vibrant flowers, and bountiful harvests would be a distant dream.

Water also possesses healing properties. Its therapeutic effects are evident in various forms, such as hydrotherapy and hot springs. Water has been used for centuries to alleviate physical ailments, calm the mind, and promote a sense of relaxation. It is no wonder that many cultures believe in the sanctity and cleansing power of water in religious and spiritual practices.

In conclusion, water truly is the source of life. It is an extraordinary substance that supports the existence of all living organisms on Earth. Its presence is not only vital for our physiological needs but also plays a critical role in maintaining the delicate balance of ecosystems and providing a nurturing environment for both flora and fauna. Undoubtedly, water’s abundance and significance make it an invaluable resource that deserves our utmost care and conservation efforts.

What Solar Eclipse-Gazing Has Looked Like for the Past 2 Centuries

Millions of people on Monday will continue the tradition of experiencing and capturing solar eclipses, a pursuit that has spawned a lot of unusual gear.

  • Share full article

In a black-and-white photo from 1945, nine men, some in military uniforms, stand in the middle of a New York City street. They are holding a small piece of what looks like glass or a photographic negative above their heads to protect their eyes as they watch the eclipse. The original border of the print, as well as some numbers and crop marks drawn onto it, are visible.

By Sarah Eckinger

  • April 8, 2024

For centuries, people have been clamoring to glimpse solar eclipses. From astronomers with custom-built photographic equipment to groups huddled together with special glasses, this spectacle has captivated the human imagination.

Creating a Permanent Record

In 1860, Warren de la Rue captured what many sources describe as the first photograph of a total solar eclipse . He took it in Rivabellosa, Spain, with an instrument known as the Kew Photoheliograph . This combination of a telescope and camera was specifically built to photograph the sun.

Forty years later, Nevil Maskelyne, a magician and an astronomy enthusiast, filmed a total solar eclipse in North Carolina. The footage was lost, however, and only released in 2019 after it was rediscovered in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives.

Telescopic Vision

For scientists and astronomers, eclipses provide an opportunity not only to view the moon’s umbra and gaze at the sun’s corona, but also to make observations that further their studies. Many observatories, or friendly neighbors with a telescope, also make their instruments available to the public during eclipses.

Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen, Fridtjof Nansen and Sigurd Scott Hansen observing a solar eclipse while on a polar expedition in 1894 .

Women from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and their professor tested out equipment ahead of their eclipse trip (to “catch old Sol in the act,” as the original New York Times article phrased it) to New London, Conn., in 1922.

A group from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania traveled to Yerbaniz, Mexico, in 1923, with telescopes and a 65-foot camera to observe the sun’s corona .

Dr. J.J. Nassau, director of the Warner and Swasey Observatory at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, prepared to head to Douglas Hill, Maine, to study an eclipse in 1932. An entire freight car was required to transport the institution’s equipment.

Visitors viewed a solar eclipse at an observatory in Berlin in the mid-1930s.

A family set up two telescopes in Bar Harbor, Maine, in 1963. The two children placed stones on the base to help steady them.

An astronomer examined equipment for an eclipse in a desert in Mauritania in June 1973. We credit the hot climate for his choice in outfit.

Indirect Light

If you see people on Monday sprinting to your local park clutching pieces of paper, or with a cardboard box of their head, they are probably planning to reflect or project images of the solar eclipse onto a surface.

Cynthia Goulakos demonstrated a safe way to view a solar eclipse , with two pieces of cardboard to create a reflection of the shadowed sun, in Lowell, Mass., in 1970.

Another popular option is to create a pinhole camera. This woman did so in Central Park in 1963 by using a paper cup with a small hole in the bottom and a twin-lens reflex camera.

Amateur astronomers viewed a partial eclipse, projected from a telescope onto a screen, from atop the Empire State Building in 1967 .

Back in Central Park, in 1970, Irving Schwartz and his wife reflected an eclipse onto a piece of paper by holding binoculars on the edge of a garbage basket.

Children in Denver in 1979 used cardboard viewing boxes and pieces of paper with small pinholes to view projections of a partial eclipse.

A crowd gathered around a basin of water dyed with dark ink, waiting for the reflection of a solar eclipse to appear, in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1995.

Staring at the Sun (or, How Not to Burn Your Retinas)

Eclipse-gazers have used different methods to protect their eyes throughout the years, some safer than others .

In 1927, women gathered at a window in a building in London to watch a total eclipse through smoked glass. This was popularized in France in the 1700s , but fell out of favor when physicians began writing papers on children whose vision was damaged.

Another trend was to use a strip of exposed photographic film, as seen below in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 and in Turkana, Kenya, in 1963. This method, which was even suggested by The Times in 1979 , has since been declared unsafe.

Solar eclipse glasses are a popular and safe way to view the event ( if you use models compliant with international safety standards ). Over the years there have been various styles, including these large hand-held options found in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1979.

Parents and children watched a partial eclipse through their eclipse glasses in Tokyo in 1981.

Slimmer, more colorful options were used in Nabusimake, Colombia, in 1998.

In France in 1999.

And in Iran and England in 1999.

And the best way to see the eclipse? With family and friends at a watch party, like this one in Isalo National Park in Madagascar in 2001.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.

pershing 115 yacht

yachting/images/magazine/2005/122005/fea_pershing_525x350.jpg

It takes something very special to impress the jilted residents of the exclusive French town of St. Tropez. Years ago we brought this depot for the rich and famous to a standstill arriving with Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, but we had just set a record across the Atlantic. Sprinting into the port with the striking new, 40-knot Pershing 115 did not quite have the same impact, but this beautiful yacht did stop onlookers in their tracks as they stood and stared.

With the 115, Pershing joins a select band of boatbuilders who are going over the 100-foot mark, taking a quantum leap from the 88-foot former flagship design. This yacht has twice the volume of anything Pershing has ever built. Moreover I was on the first hull and for a prototype design they have done a really superb job of meeting their design and perfomance goals.

Pershing boss Till Antonelli is justifiably proud of the 115. “We knew there was a market out there for a larger Pershing and I think we took a bold step in making the jump straight from 88 to 115 feet. The result is there for all to see and it is a tribute to our new factory and the people who work there, Antonelli says.

The power behind this monster is a pair of 16 cylinder MTU diesels from the 4000 range that produce 3,700 hp each. These engines are huge and they seem to stretch forever along the engine compartment. They are coupled to ZF gearboxes and then the drive goes to KaMeWa water jets in what proved to be a very smooth power train. The water jets are unique in that the inlet ducts of the jets are an integral part of the hull molding which gives a better water flow to the impellers and improves their efficiency.

The two diesels have ample space between them and you see the reason for this when you look aft and see the molding in place for a third water jet. This gives the option to install a centerline TF50 gas turbine to bring the total power up to 13,000 hp. Now you are talking real excitement, and this installation is planned for the next unit that is already under construction. Look for speeds of over 55 knots from this second yacht, speeds that are squarely situated in the Pershing performance territory.

Access to the engine compartment is via a door in the cockpit which leads first to an auxiliary room with the switchboard, watermaker and air conditioning. Forward of this are the crew’s quarters and galley. Stairs lead up from the galley directly into the saloon, close by the dining table, and there is also a dumbwaiter for larger trays. The galley is fitted with all you need for sophisticated meal preparation and the styling, even in these working areas of the yacht, is a close match to the stunning guest areas.

Back aft, the swim platform that protects the water jets is bigger than the average sportsboat. Stairs lead up on both sides to the cockpit, and between them is the garage for the Zodiac tender together with its launching crane. You don’t need to skimp on the water toys on this yacht because there is a second garage that is revealed by raising part of the forward coach roof, housing two jet skis with another launching crane.

The 115 is full of more surprises and one of them comes from opening the door on the right of the saloon entrance. Here there is a stairway winding up to a very private sun deck sitting above the pilothouse. I was trying to determine why there was no sunroof on this yacht similar to those found on other Pershings-this sun deck was the reason. There is another, more public sunpad in the cockpit together with settees and a table, but the upper area is going to be everybody’s favorite.

The sliding saloon doors make an impressive entrance and walking into the saloon takes your breath away. There is none of the rich wood panelling so often found on superyachts, but here the designers have created a beautiful and light, almost minimalistic area with only the dining chairs and the blue leather locker fronts providing color. The settees are white leather, the woodwork a very pale gray-tinted ash, and the sides and overhead a very pale cream.

Quality is enhanced by integral modern artwork above the entrance door and on two of the side window pillars. The relaxing lounge area is aft and a dining table for 10 is forward in a open plan arrangement. Forward at the helm there are three imposing adjustable seats that create what looks like an altar to high performance.

The captain sits in the center chair, which is flanked by the engine and jet controls fitted into the armrests. Here he is master of all he surveys and he really can play tunes with the sensitive machinery controls. In front of him there are seven screens that provide all the information needed for high speed navigation and control, plus sophisticated monitoring systems. The latter have been specially developed by Pershing to control and monitor everything on board except the main engines. The engines have their own MTU dedicated displays and there is a separate display for monitoring the water jet. Large Simrad radar and chart displays provide a full picture of the navigation scene.

A couple of steps down from saloon level takes you into what is virtually a private cinema. Wide lounging settees and chairs face a big flat screen that can be fed from video, DVD or cable or satellite TV. This will be a popular evening relaxing area. Another stairway takes you to the staterooms where the layout is about the only conventional thing on this yacht: a master, a VIP and two twin cabins.

These are all decorated in a similar minimalistic style but with strong colors added through the leather bed bases, the mirror trims and the bright silk bed covers. The result is both modern and restful, with the spacious master stateroom occupying the full beam and featuring an angled bed and deep side windows to give natural light. The VIP stateroom in the bow is almost semi-circular in shape and large enough to have its own settee.

The heads have the same pale gray wood and modern fittings, including hemispherical glass basins. The soles here are wood but have metal strip inserts to give good grip when wet. The extravagant quality of the master stateroom can be seen in the fitting of his-and-her heads for the use of the owners.

The interior of this yacht may be stunning but it is the exterior styling that really sets the scene. The hull has the navy blue and silver combination that was pioneered by Pershing and has since been copied by many. This color scheme complements the series of rising curves that forms the superstructure and, like so much about this design, everything looks well integrated. The practical aspects of the design have been well thought out in most areas, but you only really appreciate the true quality of this yacht out on the water at speed.

We ran the 115 from Cannes to St.Tropez, which is a well-worn path for fast motoryachts. You appreciate one of the qualities of water jet drive with the very delicate maneuvering that is possible with this big yacht. Despite her size you can inch her forward or sideways delicately close to the dock, yet she will spin like a top when you need a quick response. It takes some skill and familiarity with the controls to get to this level of control but the effort is well worthwhile.

Out at sea the response is immediate and thrilling. The thrust from the jets powers the yacht onto plane and keeps it accelerating right up to its terminal velocity. The lack of vibration is impressive, and steering control is delicate and precise when you switch from the steerable joystick controls to the wheel steering. For trim adjustment, the 115 uses the latest interceptor system rather than trim tabs and these give an immediate response that reduces the adjustment period.

On our run down to St.Tropez we had a race with the TGV high-speed train along the coast. The train won that one, but there was no doubt we were fastest on the water that day. Pershing has found just the right balance in this yacht. This design has all the style you want to impress others, both inside and out, yet this is combined with very comfortable living on board. As for performance, 40 knots will meet most requirements but if you want to outrun everything on the water then you can always invest in the gas turbine option. Then maybe, you might even beat that train.
