What will happen in the next three years?

The School's PhD programme is designed to enable you to undertake a substantial piece of research whilst gaining the skills and wider experience that will help with your next steps, whether you wish to pursue a career in or beyond academia. Every PhD is different, but a broad outline of your pathway as a PhD student is provided below.

  • Training At the start of each year you will conduct a training needs analysis with your supervisors in order to identify the skills, both generic and subject-specific, that you will need in order to complete your research successfully. The Centre for Educational Enhancement and Development ( CEED ) provides in-house training on a range of generic skills, whilst training for specific research methods may involve travel to institutions further afield.
  • Research You will meet regularly with your supervisor and will start work on your research. For many students, the first chance to share their research with a wider audience comes at the School's PGR Conference, held each April. You will have two reviews in your first year as a PhD student, followed by an annual review in each subsequent year. These are intended to make sure that you are settling into and progressing in your studies in St Andrews, and to give you a chance to get advice from staff beyond your supervisory team.
  • Research You will be in a more intensive stage of your study, carrying out the necessary research and data collection on which your thesis will be built. This may be something you can do from your desk, or may require fieldwork or placements away from St Andrews. You will be expected to present your research at the School's PGR Conference in April, and will be encouraged to attend relevant conferences at workshops at a national and international level.
  • Teaching This may be a good time to gain experience teaching undergraduate students. The School offers a wide range of paid teaching opportunities to PhD students, such as leading tutorials, helping with lab classes and fieldtrips and marking assignments.
  • Research You will spend this year trying to complete your research for your thesis and work towards submitting the final draft and having your viva defence. You will continue to build on your research from the preceding years, with an increasing emphasis on analysing and interpreting your data and writing up your findings. As well as working towards the completion of your thesis, you will be encouraged to submit your work to academic publications, where it can be picked up by a wider audience. As in previous years, you will be expected to present your research at the School's PGR Conference in April, and will be encouraged to share your findings at national and international conferences.

Year 4 (if needed)

If not completed in year 3 you will complete and submit a final draft of your thesis and have your viva defence. During the year you will continue working on publications, conferences and even applications for funding, as you will now be ready to enter the job market.

Student experiences

Mary Abed Al Ahad

I was very fortunate to be awarded the St Leonard’s, School of Medicine, and Geography and Sustainable Development PhD scholarship in 2019. It allowed me to carry my PhD project investigating the impact of air pollution on several objective and self-reported health outcomes including cause-specific mortality and hospital admissions, self-reported general health and mental well-being as well as limiting long-term illness. I also assessed whether effect of air pollution on health varies by ethnicity in the UK. I got insightful mentoring and support from my supervisors, which helped me navigate the various challenges of a PhD and gave me the confidence to explore my own research ideas and methods. My PhD experience was fantastic, working in a welcoming and stimulating environment, and being supported by my peers and fellow researchers in the Population and Health and Population and Behavioural Research Groups initially and the wider Schools of Medicine and Geography and Sustainable Development.

I graduated in November 2023 and stayed in academia. Earlier this year, I was a Postdoc Research Fellow of the MigrantLife project at the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews, examining residential mobility, housing and family formation heterogeneities across immigrants and their descendants in Europe, focusing specifically on Sweden. In March 2024, I transitioned to the role of Associate Lecturer in Population and Health Geography at the University of St Andrews where I will be leading on quantitative methods and Environment and Health modules.

Mary Abed Al Ahad

Genevieve Cezard

I was very fortunate to be awarded the St Leonard’s and Geography and Sustainable Development PhD studentship in 2016. It gave me the freedom to investigate my own research project on ethnic inequalities in health in Scotland. I received invaluable guidance and support from my supervisors, helping me to get through the variety of challenges a PhD can bring but also giving me the confidence to pursue my own ideas. My PhD years were great, working in a very welcoming and stimulating environment, thanks to my PhD peers and research group colleagues.

I graduated in 2020 and stayed in academia. I am now a postdoc in social epidemiology, and still in the school of Geography and Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews!

Former PHD student Genevieve Cezard

Solène Marion

I finished my PhD in 2021 and I enjoyed my time at St Andrews and in the School of Geography and Sustainability Development. During my PhD, I focused on the interaction between red deer and hikers in the Scottish Highlands. I had the opportunity to conduct fieldwork, write and publish papers, teach, and participate in national and international conferences with the support of the School of Geography and SD. I enjoyed the different training opportunities and the sense of community, specific to St Andrews; networking and social events were numerous. I am currently a  postdoctoral researcher at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada) where I continue my research on outdoor activities interaction with wildlife.

Former PhD student Solène Marion

Helen Packwood

I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a PhD student in the School of Geography and Sustainable Development at St Andrews! I admit, it was daunting returning to studies after many years in the workplace, but I quickly settled into this welcoming community and received excellent support from staff and fellow students. Over the three years, I had many opportunities to develop new skills, travel, meet new people and build on my professional experiences. Since graduating, I have remained in academia, based at the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh .  Initially, working as an Outreach Fellow in the Edinburgh Q Step Centre, and more recently as a Lecturer in Social Research Methods.

Former PhD student Helen Packwood

After 40 years working in the energy sector - in both industry and the UK Civil Service - I completed my PhD at the University of St Andrews between 2017 and 2020. My research addressed a question that had always puzzled me - the barriers in Africa to deploying their abundant renewable (solar) resources. This involved a fascinating time conducting interviews in South Africa, and at the end a viva examination by Zoom! Since completion, I have been working at the Erasmus University Rotterdam researching the barriers to energy transition in the Netherlands and the UK, in the post-COVID world.  The Climate and Energy Transition | Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences | Erasmus University Rotterdam (eur.nl)

Geography is no longer accepting new applications.

The Geography Department welcomes applications from well-qualified candidates with previous training in geography or a related discipline and normally a relevant master's qualification. The PhD is a full-time three-year research degree (or five-year part-time), examined by a thesis.

In the first year, students attend a comprehensive training programme based around seminars and workshops dealing with the debates in geography, the practice of developing and designing research projects, and the methods and techniques required to undertake the empirical elements of research. Research in Geography embraces both natural sciences (physical geography) and the social sciences and humanities (human geography). This PhD can, in principle, be taken in any of the topics covered by the Department of Geography and may, in part, be delivered through co-operation with other departments in social sciences, humanities and physical sciences depending on each student's individual needs. The University also offers a comprehensive range of training courses for personal and professional career development.

The Postgraduate Virtual Open Day usually takes place at the end of October. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions to admissions staff and academics, explore the Colleges virtually, and to find out more about courses, the application process and funding opportunities. Visit the  Postgraduate Open Day  page for more details.

See further the  Postgraduate Admissions Events  pages for other events relating to Postgraduate study, including study fairs, visits and international events.

Graduate showcase spotlights creative talent

An array of inspired creations from more than 550 Edinburgh College of Art students are on show at the highly-anticipated Graduate Show 2024.

Thousands of striking pieces of work – which explore new possibilities for the subject areas of Art, Design, Music and Architecture & Landscape Architecture – will be showcased from Friday 31 May to Sunday 9 June.

Visual feast

The visual feast includes a dramatic assembly of giant red circular sculptures, an eye-catching towering palm tree and a playful fusion of puppetry and fairytales.

The ten-day exhibition is taking place at the Main Building of Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) at Lauriston Place.

The Graduate Show website will also share the students’ artworks and portfolios, with more than 6000 works on the online hub on display for a global audience.

Book your Graduate Show ticket now

The ECA Graduate Show 2024 will be open  Friday 31 May to Sunday 9 June,  10am - 5pm.

With late night opening until 8pm on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 June.

Entry to the Graduate Show is free. Booking is essential to allow for managing the capacity of the building. Visitors can book three-hour time slots across the morning, afternoon and evening.

Emerging talent

The annual event showcases emerging arts and design talent and offers the public a window into ECA’s culture of celebrating and cultivating students’ creativity, design and technical skills.

This year’s portfolios draw on a range of influences and themes, including solutions for sustainable design, ideas for a changing world, and visual explorations of human feeling and emotion.

The Show reflects the spectrum of training in creative disciplines on offer across ECA, including painting and drawing, sculpture and installation, architectural planning and modelling, animation and digital visualisation, musical composition and performance, film, photography, textiles, jewellery and interior design.

This Show is the crescendo of our academic year when the College shares and celebrates our students and the College community. The variety and quality of work demonstrates the essential role creative perspectives can offer our world and communities. The students have really excelled with their creative work and ideas, which make for a wonderful exhibition. Professor Juan Cruz Principal of ECA

The dazzling exhibits include Sawdust in my eye, an installation of four giant red circles by Justine Watt; There is Possibility Under the Palm, a dramatic tree installation by Fiona Goss, and Pomegranate Pasta, My Love by Amanda Cathy Bullock, an interactive display on puppetry and fairytales

Works to look out for from the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) include Xinyi Liu’s reimagining of an industrial dockland as a forest, which explores how an urban landscape can be rehabilitated to improve the lives of the community.

Devon Tabata’s architecture project experiments with low-carbon sandstone, as he seeks to integrate buildings for a new public space in Leith that will reflect the area’s theatricality.

Fina Gill’s Interior Design project ‘Social Net’ addresses increased rates of loneliness among young adults, by reimagining the Dalmeny Street Drill Hall as a community centre based around people’s shared interests and hobbies.

Creative works

In Landscape Architecture Jenny Wang’s work imagines the creation of The Highland Land Exhibition Centre to reconnect local residents with the land along the Highland Boundary Fault.

In the School of Art, Alice Wheeler’s photography portfolio of figures emerging from darkness is inspired by the dramatic lighting of Italian churches and the hues of stained glass.

A sculpture project by Fiona Goss investigates nature and human ecosystems. The artist incorporates real environments through creating art on location or gathering material from a place to later transform via sculpture.

In the School of Design, Effie Peters short animation film Adult Teeth, which is built around interviews with childhood friends talking about growing up in a small rural town, explores nostalgia and how memories can distort over time.

In Graphic Design, Holly Stephens’ project showcases her work as a set designer for the Edinburgh University Footlights’ production of Guys and Dolls. The work includes 32 laser cut signs which were suspended from stage lighting rigs to set the scene for the stage adaptation of the classic 1940s film.

Seth Statham’s illustration project, The Fossils on Mars, examines a theory of evolution by incorporating the themes of astrobiology and palaeontology, including dramatic sculptures of fossils with mathematical scaling.

In Jewellery and Silversmithing, Cadence Yang’s project explores the expressive Nuo masks of China. The designs adapt the mask’s ornate patterns to give these rich cultural artefacts a contemporary twist.

The Norse goddess of death, Hel, is the inspiration for Joanna Huang’s Performance Costume creations. Huang’s modern take on Viking dress is paired with large deer headdress, creating an eerie and frail half-human character.

Cutting-edge wearable electronics merges with style in Iana Nikolova’s environmentally-minded product design. The device, called aq, pulsates gently indicating the air quality in the area, allowing the wearer to navigate towards less-polluted routes.

In Textiles Hâf Thompson’s portfolio is influenced by reductivism logic, always removing and never adding to her work. The result is a series of increasingly opaque textile panels.

In the Reid School of Music, Billy McCluskie’s composition Ugly Music For Sad People riffs on the grieving process and mental health through music.

Key events during the Graduate Show
