Texas Tech Launches $10K Degree Completion Program

Prospective students can request further information about the university’s innovative degree completion program.

Meet “John,” who has a good job at a tech company, but he has climbed as high as he can go because he doesn't hold a bachelor's degree. His wife works in the medical field, and they have two young children; the second was a surprise for them and has strained them financially. He wants to stay with his current company, but until he earns a degree, he can't move up or make more money. 

Then there is “Jane,” who has worked in retail management her entire career and relies on commission. She feels stuck in sales, but also knows, without a degree, she won't find a traditional 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. job that equates to the same pay. 

Even though many people are excellent at what they do, the lack of a degree can hold them back from career growth, financial advancement and overall personal satisfaction.  

Texas Tech University Online aims to help alleviate that hurdle with its new $10K Degree Completion Program which is accessible through the recently opened Texas Tech DFW site in Irving, Texas. Interested learners can request information here .

The initiative is designed to offer an affordable and flexible pathway for non-traditional students who have accumulated some college credits but have not yet completed their bachelor's degree. It also is an ideal option for working professionals seeking to advance their careers through higher education.  

Texas Tech Provost Ron Hendrick is confident of the prospects this completion path can provide to so many people.  

“This program offers access to a Texas Tech undergraduate degree for the tens of thousands of individuals who commenced their studies but had to pause due to various reasons such as family obligations, financial constraints or work commitments,” Hendrick said.

Many studies, including reports from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), confirm that workers' earnings increase as educational attainment rises, and that earnings improved with every level of education completed. BLS data also show that more education means less unemployment, with unemployment rates decreasing as education increased.  

“Depending on industry and field of degree, each level of education you complete may help you develop the skills to qualify for higher paying jobs. And educational credentials can signal to employers that you're able to plan ahead, meet deadlines and follow through on other important tasks,” one BLS report indicated.

With Texas Tech's degree completion path, students can begin their educational journey with no financial commitment through free microcredential courses offered as a blend of online learning and in-person supplemental instruction at the Irving site. Participants also can leverage their previous work and life experience to earn up to nine free credit hours through the program's prior learning assessment process. Those nine, plus the 12 free microcredential hours, are equivalent to 21 credit hours at no cost.  

Upon completion of the microcredentials, learners will be admitted to the bachelor's program and finish the remainder of their courses online, choosing between a Bachelor of Arts in University Studies or a Bachelor of Science in Leadership Studies.

For those who have completed at least 80 credit hours, the bachelor's degree is attainable for as little as $10,000. For individuals with fewer than 80 hours, the program will work to make the degree as affordable as possible, but the cost might be slightly higher than $10K. This still presents significant cost savings compared to traditional degree completion pathways, enhancing affordability for students. Individual pricing will vary based on each student's transfer credits and prior learning experiences. An adviser will assist students in estimating total cost. 

Throughout the program, students can take advantage of flexible course offerings, including online and hybrid formats, allowing them to balance education with work and other commitments. The cost-effective and convenient program is something “John,” “Jane” and a multitude of students in similar circumstances could certainly find useful.

A Guide to Online Computer Science Degrees in Texas

The Systems Engineering Department of the Naval Postgraduate School offers study and research leading to the award of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Systems Engineering.  The Ph.D. degree involves required coursework, comprehensive qualifying examinations, and a research-based dissertation.  The Ph.D. degree may be pursued via resident or hybrid study (distance learning plus periodic temporary residence).

Students take graduate level course in systems engineering (as needed to pass the oral and written qualifying examinations), advanced graduate courses in systems engineering and an application domain, and perform research that leads to a dissertation involving some aspect of systems engineering.

Research topics may be selected from a broad variety of studies of the systems engineering process, applications of systems engineering to solving complex problems, systems level modeling and simulation, and systems suitability assessment.

Subject to approval of the student's dissertation committee chairman, dissertation research may be conducted away from NPS at cooperating facilities.

International Students**

Students must satisfy a one-year residency requirement. This may be met by completing an NPS M.S. degree plus periodic extended stays (nominally two weeks per quarter) at an NPS campus spread throughout the duration of the student's program. The M.S. degree may be completed before enrollment in the Ph.D. program.

Applicants should possess an M.S. degree in Systems Engineering. Applicants with only a B.S. degree or an M.S. degree in another discipline will be required to take a number of systems engineering courses (equivalent to the coursework portion of an MSSE degree program) to pass the qualifying examinations.

Applicants must submit a completed online application form and provide:

Certified copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Transcripts from NPS are not necessary, but transcripts from other schools may be required of current and former NPS students.

Results of a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test taken within the past five years. The SE Department Doctoral Committee desires GRE information to support development and improvement of the doctoral program. However, applicants with graduate degrees and solid justification for not taking the exam may request (through the Admissions Office) to submit a proxy letter instead of taking the GRE. The SE Department Doctoral Committee will evaluate such letters to determine if the GRE requirement can be waived. 

A brief outline (200 words or fewer) of specific areas of interest within the proposed major field of study. This does not commit the student to those areas. 

Two letters of recommendation regarding academic potential. 

Current results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Written English, only for international applicants not currently enrolled at NPS whose native language is other than English or whose primary language of instruction was other than English. For specific test score requirements, see the NPS Catalog section pertaining to “International Students.”

Attestation by the student's sponsoring agency or nation that they are committed to tuition and salary support during the student's residence at NPS.

Students may take more or less time to complete the program based on their individual circumstances. Students often take 5-6 years to complete the program, although some students take significantly longer and some complete the program more quickly.  Program progress is marked by successful completion of coursework, successful completion of exams, forming a dissertation committee, developing and presenting a dissertation proposal successfully, writing a dissertation manuscript that is accepted by the dissertation committee, and successfully completing a dissertation defense among other activities.  Each step along the way may take more or less time for a specific individual based on many factors.

Systems Engineering PhD Program Exam Process ​​​​​​ ​​​​​                  

Students take five written exams including two mandatory exams in probability & statistics, and in the fundamentals of systems engineering, and take three topic exams based on coursework.  Upon successful completion of the written exams and formation of a dissertation committee, students then take an oral exam.  Students are allowed to retake any specific exam only once.  Failing a specific exam twice terminates the PhD program for the student; however, there are options for students in this situation to move into a variety of other programs.  Sufficiently prepared students are generally successful in passing the exams.

Class format.

Onsite classes meet only one weekend (Friday and Saturday) per month, letting busy professionals earn their degree while not interrupting full-time work schedules. Engineering Management courses may alternately be attended remotely through a synchronous viewing option, allowing remote students to virtually attend class live with onsite students.

The 30-credit hour program is comprised of 10 courses, including two project courses, Project A and Project B. Students follow a prescribed course sequence, which includes course work in management, negotiations, marketing, engineering economics and product development.

Master’s Degree Admission Requirements

At UT Austin, admission decisions are made on a holistic basis. Applicants will be admitted based on the sum of their academic and professional accomplishments, not any single criterion.

Domestic Requirements

To qualify for our Engineering Management Master’s Degree program, domestic applicants must have the following:

  • B.S. in engineering or related technical field. Other degrees may be eligible, but applicants will not be admitted with deficiencies.
  • Completed Online Application (plus application fees)
  • A 3.0 GPA.*
  • Official transcripts from an accredited college or university
  • GMAT or GRE scores (UT reporting code 6882), or request a waiver, more information below.
  • Statement of purpose
  • Three professional letters of recommendation

*Conditional admission may be possible if your GPA is below 3.0.

International Requirements

In addition to meeting the domestic requirements, international applicants must submit:

  • TOEFL or IELTS scores, if applicable.

Conditional Admission

Applicants who hold less than a 3.0 GPA may be recommended for conditional admission by the Admissions Committee (contingent on approval from the graduate dean) based on the overall strength of their application, including transcripts, test scores and experience. Conditional applicants should submit their application and materials under the same guidelines as all applicants, but should address any academic challenges that may have tarnished their GPA in their statement of purpose. This statement should also mention how applicants faced their challenges, or plan to face similar challenges in the future.

If the Admissions Committee decides in the student’s favor, the application is forwarded to the Graduate School for a final decision. Students who are granted conditional admission have conditions associated with their first semester as students, which typically entail earning no grade lower than 3.0, not dropping any classes or earning any incompletes and undergoing a review at the end of the semester to ensure satisfactory progress.

*A GRE/GMAT waiver can be requested if you:

  • Have submitted a complete application, to include transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc.
  • Hold a BS in engineering, science, or related program, from an ABET accredited program ( https://amspub.abet.org/aps )
  • Have at least 3 years of work experience OR
  • Have a master's degree OR
  • Have expired GRE/GMAT test scores
  • Waiver requests are due on or before June 1 .
  • Waiver requests are due on or before October 1 .

*A GRE/GMAT waiver will be automatically granted if you meet all the following criteria:

  • Hold a BS in engineering, science, or related program, from an ABET ( https://www.abet.org/ ) accredited program
  • Have an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3 and at least a 3.3 GPA upper-division undergraduate courses
  • Have at least 18 months of work experience

Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted for fall and spring semesters. Please note applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Applicants, especially international students, are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Notice of an admission decision is typically sent about one month after application completion and only after all materials have been received. All materials are due by the application deadline. Please note that test scores may take up to three weeks to transmit to UT Austin.

Tuition is $5,000 per course plus fees for all students, regardless of their location. In total, tuition is $50,000 plus fees. This tuition rate is subject to change.

Upon admission, a $1,000 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot, which will be applied to your first tuition payment.

Federal Loans

Master’s degree students are not eligible for financial aid, as this program is not state-funded. However, master’s degree students are eligible for federal loans through the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid .

Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, Direct PLUS and private loans may help cover the cost of tuition. Offered by private lenders and federal and state governments, these federal loans often feature lower interest rates than traditional loans. Master’s degree students are not eligible for loans through the College Access Loan (CAL) Program.

Veterans Benefits

Master’s degree students may be eligible to receive veterans benefits from the G.I. Bill or V.A. Tuition Assistance.

Texas Veterans - Please note that The Hazlewood Exemption does not cover late registration fees, affiliated studies, University Extension, executive education (option III) graduate programs, or like programs/courses.

Tuition Reimbursement

Tuition reimbursement is a benefit offered by many employers to employees who are looking to gain job-related skills and advance their careers within the company.

If you are interested in tuition reimbursement, you should first verify whether your employer has an existing tuition reimbursement policy. From there, you can determine your eligibility and work with your employer to receive benefits.

Engineering Management students complete two Engineering Management Projects (ENM 397P), during each summer of the two-year program. These two projects are typically on the same or related topics, and the second report builds upon the first. Even though the two projects are typically on a related topic, each session of ENM 397P is a standalone course that requires research, a presentation,and a written report, and each course receives a letter grade. The independent projects are carried out under the supervision of an engineering management faculty member.

Engineering Management students are encouragedto attend all Projects Presentations. It is recommended that students completing Project A view both Project A and Project B presentations, to understand what is expected of the final presentation.

ENM 380.1 Managing People and Organizations (3 Credit Hours) Introduction to frameworks from the social sciences that are useful for understanding what effective leaders do when working with others.

ENM 380E.2 Engineering Project Management (3 Credit Hours) Explore methods for organizing, coordinating, and controlling resources to minimize risk and conflict, and to maintain budgets and schedules. Discuss the evaluation of competing alternatives, organization of a project, scheduling of tasks and resources, and the role of management.

Director - Eric Bickel, Ph.D. | Engineering Project Management, Strategic Decision & Risk Analysis As the Director of the M.S.E. in Engineering Management, J. Eric Bickel is an Associate Professor and Area Coordinator for the Graduate Program in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (Department of Mechanical Engineering) at The University of Texas at Austin. In addition, Professor Bickel directs the Center for Petroleum Asset Risk Management (CPARM).

Rich Crawford, Ph.D. | Creativity, Innovation & Product Development Dr. Richard H. Crawford is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and is the Temple Foundation Endowed Faculty Fellow No. 3. Dr. Crawford’s research interests cover a wide spectrum of topics in computer aided mechanical design, design theory and methodology.

John Daly, Ph.D. | Managing People & Organizations Dr. John Daly is the Liddell Centennial Professor of Communication, the TCB Professor of Management, and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at The University of Texas at Austin. He teaches undergraduate and graduate classes on Interpersonal Communication and Advocacy. He has served as the President of the National Communication Association, the largest association of scholars and teachers of communication in the world. Dr. Daly has published numerous scholarly articles and produced more than a dozen books, most recently Advocacy: Influencing Others and Championing Ideas (Yale, 2012). For his scholarly work he has been recognized as a Fellow of both the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association.

Doug Dierking, Ph.D.  | Art & Science of Negotiations Dr. Dierking is a senior lecturer and assistant department chair in the department of management at the McCombs School of Business. Dr. Dierking’s research interests include organizational culture, effective employment on-boarding and retention practices, leadership development and succession planning.

Britt Freund, Ph.D.  | Engineering Operations Management Robert Freund received his B.S. from The University of Texas at Austin and his M.S. and Ph.D. at Cornell University. His research and teaching interests include the design of manufacturing and service operations, scheduling, and the effective use of automation.

Rebecca Geier | Marketing and Negotiations Rebecca has held business and marketing leadership roles at enterprise multi-nationals, SaaS startups, and her own firm she founded and sold. She brings over 30 years’ experience in B2B markets. Named by The Wall Street Journal editors among the Ten Most Innovative Entrepreneurs in America, she published her first book, Smart Marketing for Engineers: An Inbound Marketing Guide to Reaching Technical Audiences, which continues to grow in popularity and 5-star reviews. Norman Kaderlan, Ph.D. | Marketing and Negotiations Dr. Kaderlan received his B.S. from MIT, and his M.S. and Ph.D from The University of Wisconsin-Madison. Over the past twenty years, he has focused on assisting companies, communities and countries to develop the infrastructure and processes to bring innovations to the marketplace.

Bruce McCann, Ph.D. | Managing Projects & Processes Dr. McCann holds a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. During twenty-five years with Schlumberger he held positions in the US and France: Engineering management positions as Section Manager, Project Manager, Department Manager and VP Engineering.

TBA  Manny Newburger, J.D.  | Legal Issues and Technology Management  Professor Newburger is a partner with the law firm of Barron & Newburger. He teaches a course on Consumer Protection DTPA. Professor Newburger is known nationally for his expertise in consumer and commercial law, consulting on FDCPA compliance across the world and on defense of Fair Debt cases across the U.S.

Gaylen Paulson, Ph.D.  | Art & Science of Negotiations Dr. Paulson's research and teaching focus on the strategic aspects of interacting with people, including negotiations, conflict management, and persuasion. He has offered programs and consulting services with organizations including 3M, Bayer, Dell, HEB, the Texas Nurses Association, and many others.

Rob Oshana, Ph.D. | Legal Issues and Technology Management Rob Oshana is Vice President of Software Engineering R&D for the Microcontroller and Microprocessor business line at NXP Semiconductors, responsible for software enablement, IoT connectivity, software middleware and security, operating systems, machine learning, software services and advanced technologies. He serves on multiple industry advisory boards and is a recognized international speaker. He has published numerous books and papers on software engineering and embedded systems. Heidi Toprac, MBA | Finance and Accounting for Engineering Managers Heidi Toprac is a Senior Lecturer for the Department of Finance in McCombs School of Business. She has 15 years of experience teaching finance classes. Prior to joining McCombs, she held a variety of corporate finance and accounting roles, where she developed and managed several global programs. She has worked in a variety of industries--including retail and high-tech--and on three different continents.

Master's Projects

Students completing Project A are required to be on-site for four days during the summer semester and students completing Project B are required to be onsite for two days during the summer semester. During the fall and spring semesters, students who are completing their project are required to be on-site for presentations for one day.

Students who are not on the full-time track (Fast Track) are required to complete Project A before completing the last four courses of the program. If a student does not complete Project A at the appropriate time, they will have to take the course the following semester, in addition to their normal enrollment. What is the application fee? There is a $65 fee for domestic applicants and a $90 fee for international applicants, paid at the time of application submission. There is no application fee for non-degree seeking applicants.

Can I apply to enter the master’s degree program in the summer semester? No, students are only accepted into the program in the fall and spring semesters.

How do I check my application status? Students can view their application status by monitoring MyStatus .

Is the GRE required for admission? Yes, the GRE or GMAT is required for admissions review. There is a GRE/GMAT Waiver Request available. Visit the tuition tab for more details.

Does this program accept transfer credits? No, this program does not accept transfer credits.

Can I enroll in the master’s degree program full time? Yes, students are permitted to enroll in the “Fast Track” version of the program. Students enrolled in “Fast Track” attend two weekends per month instead of one.

How do I register for courses? Prior to upcoming semesters, students will be asked via email to provide their course preferences by responding to a Registration Survey. Our staff will register students based on their responses, and priority will be given to students nearing the end of their studies. Students who fail to submit their responses before the registration deadline will be charged a late registration fee in addition to their tuition costs.

How are online courses delivered? Online courses are delivered through Canvas. Students can click here to log into Canvas and access 24/7 support.

Are the courses asynchronous? No, the courses in this program are not asynchronous.

How long does it take to earn a master’s degree in Engineering Management? The master’s degree program can be completed in as little as 4 semesters. However, students have up to five years to complete the program. Most students complete the program within two to three years.

Can students reach out to professors for assistance? Yes! In addition to providing feedback, professors are available to students when needed. Professors and teacher assistants can be reached during their office hours and are enthusiastic to answer questions.

Can students take a leave of absence? Yes, all students are granted two leaves of absence, which excuses them from either a fall or spring semester with no penalty. A leave of absence must be approved prior to the first day of class. Leave of absences are not required to skip a summer semester enrollment.

What online services are available to students? UT Austin students have access to numerous online resources, including academic coaching through the Sanger Learning Center and writing appointments through the University Writing Center .

Do I have access to UT Austin’s library? Yes, students can access databases, digital collections, e-journals and e-books online at the University of Texas Libraries .

How do I make a payment? Students can pay their tuition online at My Tuition Bill . Students can pay online using a credit card, eCheck, electronic funds transfer, installment plan, tuition loan or eProxy.

For the same cost as an unofficial transcript, students without a financial bar can order an official transcript. Students can order an official transcript online through the secure online transcript order system using their EID. Official transcripts can be sent electronically or by mail to students or third parties. Official transcripts can also be ordered by submitting a signed transcript order form 891 via one of the following:

What is the graduation procedure? During their final semester, master’s degree students must apply to graduate by submitting the Master’s Graduation Application form online. Forms are valid for a single semester, and students who fail to meet the deadline will be unable to receive their degree until the following semester. Does this program offer networking opportunities? Yes! What does option 3 mean? Option 3 is the designation used by UT Austin for self-funded programs with atypical hours and adjusted modes of instruction.
