How to Write a TEFL Cover Letter (With Sample)

When applying for in-person or online TEFL/TESOL jobs , your cover letter is your first impression and, like your Bridge Teacher Portfolio and digital badges , helps you stand out as an applicant. A TEFL cover letter conveys your enthusiasm for a specific position and demonstrates your qualifications for the job. Cover letters can fill in gaps on your resume, such as inexperience, lack of education, or even periods of unemployment. They also provide a chance to let your personality shine through and for potential employers to get to know you a little better.

How do you begin a TEFL cover letter?

Before you get started writing your cover letter, remember these three tips:

  • A TEFL cover letter is usually not very long, consisting of just three short paragraphs.
  • You want to be brief and direct so that employers take the time to actually read what you’ve written, but still detailed enough to provide an accurate picture of your personality and experience.
  • It is imperative that each teaching cover letter you write is tailored to the specific job for which you’re applying. It’s easy to see when an applicant has simply used a generic cover letter to send in mass to various companies, and this never looks good to employers.

When you’re ready to start, your teaching cover letter should begin with a personalized greeting. In other words, you want to avoid the generic “Dear Hiring Manager” and instead find out the name of the person handling the applications.

While this isn’t always possible, oftentimes all it takes is a quick glance at the job advertisement or an easy web search to find out who is in charge of the school, language institute, or online company where you’re applying. Taking the time to research the hiring manager’s name will allow you to stand out as someone who goes the extra mile, who cares deeply about the specific job, and who demonstrates attention to detail.

How do you format a TEFL cover letter? What exactly should it include?

Cover letters usually include three paragraphs:

1. Introduction: Why you’re writing and where you saw the job post

This first paragraph is simple enough. You’re essentially letting an employer know that you’re interested in working for them. Be sure to specify the position for which you’re applying, and let the school, language institute, or online company know where you saw the job advertisement. Employers appreciate when applicants mention where they saw the job posting because it allows them to get a better idea of where their advertising time and money are best spent.

2. Why you want this particular job and would be great for it

This is perhaps the most important paragraph to consider when writing a cover letter to teach abroad or online because this is where you’ll really demonstrate why someone should hire you.

Do your research

The first thing to keep in mind is that you need to do your research so that you can show you have a vast knowledge of the school or company and the position. Again, this personalizes the TEFL cover letter and lets employers know that this particular job is important to you.

Focus on what you can do for them

Next, highlight what you can specifically do for the school or program. Try to match your qualities to those listed in the job posting by offering specific examples of times when you’ve demonstrated these qualities or previous roles you’ve held that incorporated the same skillsets.

Furthermore, try quantifying your skills – put numbers to your accomplishments! Teachers can do this in several ways, including specifying how many students they supervised during a specific role, how many reflective teaching support groups they hosted each month at a school, or the percentage by which their students’ test scores improved during a certain year.

Highlight what makes you stand out as an applicant

Finally, you’ll want to mention any other unique qualities that are not on your TEFL resume but that reflect your suitability for the job. Examples include your demonstrated ability to adapt to other cultures, your experience learning other languages, which has led you to a deeper understanding of what it takes to teach a language, or your proven expertise when it comes to incorporating technology into the classroom.

3. Summary paragraph

While this paragraph is largely self-explanatory, you’ll want to remember several essential components to include here.

  • First, you should reiterate why you’re a good fit for the position in order to leave employers with the most relevant information.
  • Then, you should be sure to thank them for taking the time to review your application or read your TEFL cover letter.
  • Additionally, you want to include a reference to the next step. This could be something like, “I would appreciate the chance to set up an interview in order to further speak with you about my qualifications for the position” or, “Please feel free to reach out to me via phone or email if you have any questions about my qualifications.”

Digital badges for BridgeTEFL certification

Finally, you should include your contact information and signature. This is also a great space to include your digital badges for TEFL/TESOL , which can be hyperlinked to a verifiable URL where employers can get details on your course, including core competencies achieved, a sampling of tasks you’ve completed, and info on the program’s accreditation. This will help you stand out from other applicants and further highlight your credentials.

What if I have no teaching experience?

If you don’t have any prior teaching experience, then you should use the space in your cover letter to teach abroad or online to reference your TEFL certification and how the skills you learned in your online TEFL course align with the job for which you’re applying. For example, you could highlight a teaching practicum in which you taught a class of adult learners and were evaluated by an experienced TEFL/TESOL teacher, how you created multiple lesson plans using different teaching methods, or how you completed a Specialization in Teaching Young Learners .

Alternatively, you could take the opportunity to describe how skills you’ve acquired in non-teaching jobs would transfer to the position . For example, if you’ve ever held a position in which you’ve overseen large groups of adults or children, this could translate into classroom management skills . Or, if you’ve led workshops or training sessions, you could easily equate this to being able to clearly and effectively explain difficult subjects to learners.

What shouldn’t I include in my TEFL cover letter?

Generic language.

One thing to avoid in your teaching cover letter is generic language that isn’t unique to the position for which you’re applying. Anything that broadly references your overall teaching qualifications instead of specifying how a certain qualification or experience translates to the specific position would fall into this generic language category.

Summary of your resume

Another trap that applicants often fall into is using their TEFL cover letter to simply summarize what’s on their resume. This is harmful to their candidacy for a few reasons. For starters, employers will simply gloss over what you’ve written since they’ve already seen the same information in your resume. Furthermore, these types of cover letters come across as boring and stiff. In other words, you’ll miss out on the opportunity to show your personality and make a case for your candidature for the specific position.

Typos and other errors

Finally, it’s essential that you avoid sending your cover letter with any typos or grammatical errors. While this holds true for any position, it’s all the more important when applying for a TEFL job because no school is going to want an English teacher who doesn’t have a firm grasp of grammar and spelling!

Cover letters for online teaching are usually boring and bland. If you're anything like a majority of the job-seeking market, you send the same one around to every company you apply to. But that's about to change! Enter, a cover letter tailored specifically for that teaching English online job and school you want to apply to work at. You're about to knock their socks off!

What is a TEFL Cover Letter?

A TEFL cover letter shows your excitement for a particular English teaching job and highlights your suitability as an English teacher. It can also address any shortcomings in your resume, such as lack of experience, education, or job gaps.

What is a TEFL Cover Letter for Online Teaching?

An online teaching cover letter is a short (one-page) document that communicates your enthusiasm and qualifications for teaching English online. Cover letters for online teaching provide an opportunity to convince your future employer that you are the right person for the job.

How to Write a TEFL Cover Letter for an Online English Teacher

When applying for a job, a cover letter should be submitted alongside your resume.

  • Your online tutor cover letter should highlight any educational and teaching-related experiences that you may have to offer.
  • You should also highlight any previous experience you have teaching English as a second language, as well as your desire to provide your students with a quality educational experience and your commitment to professionalism.

A common error that many teachers make when applying to teach English online is sending a generic cover letter. This means they are using the exact same cover letter to apply for a plethora of jobs, even though the jobs are for a range of different schools.

While a generic cover letter is more times than not adequate, having a cover letter that is tailored to the specific school you are applying to and the age group of students you will be teaching will help set you apart from the competition.

Another way to stand out from the crowd is to highlight what differentiates you from other online English teachers. For example, if you are applying for a role where you will be only teaching children, try to keep your cover letter focused on this. Perhaps mention that you have a colorful, clutter-free dedicated space for your classroom and many fun props to attract a child’s attention and make learning fun.

Similarly, if you are applying for a role with an adult-teaching platform, you will want to tailor your cover letter to focus on teaching English to adults instead. 

Online Tutor Cover Letter Formatting

Your online English teacher cover letter should be a clean, simple, modern design. The most important thing is that your font is easy to read. Times New Roman is commonly viewed as a classic resume font, but it is also dated and can be considered boring. Try using clean, sleek fonts like Calibri, Arial, or Verdana to give a more tightened-up presentation.

The text should be black or grayscale and the use of the bolded font is not necessary for a TEFL cover letter as the need for headings or subheadings don't exist. You’ll also want your cover letter format and text to match that of your resume. Although we do not discuss resumes in this post, this is something you should already be thinking about.

Online ESL Teacher Cover Letter Requirements

Your online English teaching cover letter should include the following:

→ You'll want to mention where you are located and whether your location is stable or if you are constantly moving around (i.e.: a digital nomad). This can be as simple as listing your address at the top of the page.

→ A brief explanation of your interest in education and teaching English.

→ How and why you are interested in working for that school.

→ Mention whether you're a native or non-native English speaker.

→ Make note of what accent you have (i.e.: If you are American, then list that you have an American accent). Some schools give preference to the type of accent you have.

→ Education. Include your TEFL Certification and where/when it was obtained.

→ Any prior teaching or international experience you have.

→ Specific skills you may offer that pertain to teaching ESL to the age group in question.

→ When you are able to begin teaching English online and your ability to fulfill any minimum contract agreements.

→ List the make/model of your computer/laptop, amount of memory, operating system, processor speed, etc. If your laptop has an in-built webcam, make note that it's inbuilt, or if you use an external webcam, list the make and model. Also list the name and model of your headset. A quality headset will do you wonders.

→ The speed of your Internet connection and whether it is wired or wireless. You can take a speed test and link to it to show your speed results. 

→ If you already have a dedicated space set up for your classroom, reference it as well as any teaching English online classroom props you may have.

→ Limit your cover letter to one page in length.

Saving Your TEFL Cover Letter 

Save your cover letter as your last name, first name, online school name, and then what the file is. Example file name:

So - here are five critical steps to writing a TEFL cover letter that'll make hiring managers sit up and take notice:

1. Do Your Company Homework

Scour the school's online presence—website, social media, and job postings—starting with its About page and going deeper.

Discover their mission statement, teaching philosophy, and current initiatives ( news section ). Are they tech-forward or traditional? Understanding their DNA helps you speak their language. Become a digital detective.

2. Personalize, Don't Copy-Paste

Avoid sending the same generic cover letter to multiple teaching jobs. This one-size-fits-all approach screams, "I didn't bother to learn about your school."

The perfect CV and cover letter for a TEFL teacher

Tips for securing a good English teaching job abroad, understanding the importance of a well-crafted CV, and learning how to enhance your qualifications and experience to stand out in a competitive market.

Getting an English teaching job abroad is becoming easier all the time, even if you don't have the university degree and 4 week certificate in TEFL that have always long been the minimum requirements. At the same time, though, getting a good teaching job in a good school is becoming increasingly difficult as the number of TEFL teachers with 10, 20 or even 30 years experience is increasing. This article aims to give you some hints to mean you don't have to wait until you have 30 years experience to get your CV noticed by the director of a good school, and to make sure when you do have 30 years experience it is much more impressive than the experience that all the other teachers in the same position at that time.

As someone who in a previous had to sift through hundreds of CVs in the first week of September every year to choose the 8 or 9 people we would give an interview to, I've gained a very good idea of what makes an English teaching CV stand out- experience that I've managed to use to make my own CV noticed for several jobs I was theoretically underqualified for. Some of the tips below are just things you can make sure you don't miss out of your CV, while others are things you will need to think about throughout your career to make sure you build up the experience and qualifications you will need to make your CV really stand out. Perfect CVs for teachers of children and Business and ESP students will be dealt with in other articles.

For me, the perfect teaching CV qualifications section would consist of a good undergraduate degree in English (2:1 or above, foreign languages a second best to English), Cambridge CELTA or similarly well known 4 week certificate (preferably a B or above, even better if from a well known course provider like International House in London), DELTA or similar Diploma level practical teaching qualification and then an MA in ELT (preferably with a well known professor or two teaching you). For those of us who haven't managed to put all of these together, other things you might want to mention are:

  • The things necessary to pass your teaching qualification, e.g. number of observed teaching hours, grammar tests and other graded written work, number of hours in input sessions, different levels of students taught, materials used, any positive comments from your trainers about your teaching
  • Other qualifications in English, e.g. English Literature A Level, and how it could be useful and relevant to teaching someone English as a second language.
  • Any qualifications in foreign languages and what you learnt about language teaching from that experience
  • Any other teaching qualifications you have, e.g. a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in primary school teaching, with descriptions of how that could be relevant to teaching English to foreign adults, e.g. any children you taught who had English as a second language or having to correct the grammar and spelling of your students

One thing to bear in mind is that the person reading your CV might not understand much about the education system of the country you are from and/ or the qualifications available for TEFL teachers, so some brackets after each qualification telling them what it means might be useful, e.g. Trinity CTEFLA (the second most popular teaching qualification for English teachers in the UK, connected to Trinity College London), A Level in English Language Grade A (top 10% mark in the standard university entrance level exam in the UK), or BSc in Physics from Birmingham (recently named the 10 th best university in Britain in a Newsweek report).

Here are some of the factors that can make different kinds of TEFL work experience stand out from just a pure number of years in the classroom and that you will want to make clear in your CV if possible:

  • Have you taught the same kind of classes and the same kind of students as you will need to in the job you are applying for?
  • How many years of your total classroom experience have you taught since your most recent teaching qualification(s) (e.g. post-Diploma experience)?
  • What class sizes have you taught (including large classes and 1 to 1)?
  • What levels have you taught?
  • Have you taught intensive courses?
  • What difficult classes and situations have you had to deal with, e.g. students who can't read and write in English, mixed level classes, blind and deaf students, students with learning problems, minimal resources, or classrooms where people can't move around?
  • What technology relevant to teaching have you used both inside and outside the classroom, e.g. OHP, PowerPoint presentations, language lab?
  • What did you do while you were teaching to make sure your level of skill was increased, e.g. having and giving observations, attending and giving teaching workshops, reading teaching books and magazines, feedback and grading from your students?
  • Have you taught exam classes such as TOEIC or TOEFL? If so, were you involved in writing and marking mock exams?
  • Did you volunteer for or were you given any additional responsibilities, e.g. making up supplementary files for a textbook you were using, or organizing the staff and/ or student social programme?
  • Have you used any particularly up to date and/ or popular textbook series?
  • Have you given any special interest courses, e.g. "How to take a job interview in English" or "Learning English through songs"?
  • Did you manage to make any particular improvements in your last school, e.g. introducing a new system for sharing lesson ideas, or testing and recommending a new range of textbooks?
  • Have you worked for schools that are well known and respected, e.g. the British Council, schools which have a branch in the UK which are certified by the British Council, schools which have contracts with important local organisations such as providing language training to the local government, schools that provide training for teaching qualifications such as the DELTA?
  • Have you been involved in level checking and setting progress check etc. tests?

For people whose TEFL teaching experience doesn't fill up the page yet (or are worried about leaving a gap in their job history in case someone thinks they have been locked away for a while!), other relevant work experience can include:

  • Any other teaching experience, including tutoring
  • Any other work with people, e.g. care work, customer service
  • Any other work that involves standing up in front of other people and talking, e.g. sales
  • Any work that involved travelling or living abroad, or that involved dealing with people who don't speak English well
  • Any work that involved the English language, e.g. proofreading or editing
  • Any work that involved explaining things to non-experts
  • Any other work that involves lots of preparation in your free time
  • Any other full time jobs at all, to prove you can get up in the morning and get through to the end of the week

Jobs you might want to downgrade or leave out include:

  • Any jobs you quit
  • Any jobs that involved just you and a computer and no human contact
  • Any jobs that were very high status or very high paid, because they might wonder if you can cope with being "just an English teacher" 

It might well be worth finding out if the person who will be reading your CV will be British or American, or what a CV usually looks like in the country you are applying to, because the amount of space you can give to hobbies varies a lot. Relevant hobbies on any kind of CV for a TEFL teacher include:

  • Language learning
  • Involvement in drama at school or university, or other experience of standing up and speaking in front of a group of people such as giving presentations or being in a debating club
  • Travel (but don't make it sound like you are a permanent backpacker who will be gone after 3 months)
  • Any other hobbies that could show why you want to work in the area where the job and so will be likely to stay, e.g. art galleries in Madrid, diving in Thailand, marshal arts in Japan

Other things that could be a selling point include:

  • Being an examiner for IELTS, FCE, BULATS etc.
  • Having published articles etc. in (preferably well-known) TEFL magazines and websites
  • Having been involved in teacher training, even if that just means that people on a CELTA course observed one of your classes or that you did peer observations in your last school
  • Your level in the language of the place you want to work
  • Any experience you have of being in the country you are applying to work in or similar countries, or any experience teaching and/ or mixing with people from that  country
  • Already having a work visa or spouse visa or other necessary paperwork sorted out
  • Already having local accommodation sorted out

In many countries, having a copy of your CV or at least the cover letter translated into the local language can help. Making sure this fits the local format etc. for CVs can also help you make your English language CV more fitting for local conditions.

The points above are a mix of things you will want to include in your CV and things you will want to include in your cover letter . In theory, your CV should be something you could send out to any employer (although in reality you might want to polish it up a little to give more prominence to things that are particularly relevant for the job you are applying for), so it should not mention anything about a particular kind of teaching job or particular country unless you want it to be assumed that you are only applying for those kinds of jobs. Your cover letter should include a very brief summary of your CV (some Directors of Studies only look at the CV if it seems worthwhile from the cover letter, while others only look at the cover letter if the CV looks good) as well as information specific to the job you are applying for, such as why you especially want it and why you are especially suitable for it, as well as information relevant to the country or area the job is in.

As well as showing you what relevant information to include on your CV to get a good job, hopefully the list of things you need on a CV has also shown you how to judge what a good job is- it is one that will give you exactly the kinds of experience that is mentioned above, allowing you to improve your CV and step up to a job that allows you to gain even more of that experience and so on...

When you apply for a job teaching English, along with your TEFL/TESOL CV/Résumé you will also need to send a Cover Letter or email.

Remember that the cover letter is the first and best chance to make a good impression so it should be the best you can create. A potential employer will read this and then decide or not if it is worth opening the CV/Résumé.

The letter should be short and to the point. School owners and Directors of Studies do not have time to waste so they want to see without delay who you are and whether it is worth spending time on your application.

The cover letter should contain these points:

  • why you are writing
  • where you saw the advert
  • who you are and what you can offer
  • a very brief overview of your qualifications and experience
  • why you want this particular job
  • ask them to consider your application

Don’t, however, be arrogant in your letter and tell them how good you are and why they should employ you. This simply does not work in most countries where pushy candidates leave a bad feeling in the mouth.

Also, bear in mind that the person reading the letter may not have a 100% grasp of English so you should keep it simple and to the point. Don’t be clever, in other words, as it may not be understood.

The idea you should always have in mind is that the letter should encourage them to open up your application and read more about you.

Sample Cover Letter

Here is a typical cover letter for a job. It is simple, to the point and clear.

Dear Mr Li,

I am writing to apply for the position of EFL teacher at “China School” which you advertised on the EFL Job website on 3rd June, 2015.

Last year I graduated from Smithtown University with a degree in English. Following on from this I took and completed my 120 hour TEFL Certificate with ICAL. During that time I was also volunteering at a local community centre in my hometown teaching English to new arrivals – a job I enjoyed immensely!

I have long planned to come to China and teach English (I’m starting to learn Mandarin) and I would appreciate it very much if you would consider me for the position of EFL teacher in your school.

I have attached my resume and look forward to hearing from you soon.

With regards,

Jack Jones.

Most likely you will email off your application. Before you do this, however, make sure your email address is appropriate. For example, if your email address is like any of these:

[email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

…then think about getting a new free gmail address which is less likely to worry a potential employer!

Finally, attach your CV/Résumé to the email as PDF file. In many common word processing programs (such as Microsoft Word) there is an option to SAVE AS PDF and you should use this. If you don’t have this option in your word processor, you can also convert a file to PDF online; just do a search for “convert to pdf” and it will come up with a number of websites which let you upload your file as a document and then download it as a PDF.

Needless to say, you should keep your CV/Résumé up to date so it’s ready to go out at a moment’s notice.

Proof and Proof Again

Finally, the first things any decent school owner or DoS will notice in your letter are grammar‏‎ and spelling errors. Make any, and chances are your application will be consigned to the rubbish bin.

So once you’ve written your letter, check it very, very carefully indeed. Then check it again. And then get a friend to check it. And then another one.

Any mistake in the letter – or your resume/CV – is liable to lose you the job!

English Teachers should include the following elements in their cover letter to make a strong and positive impression on potential employers: 1. **Introduction**: Start with a personalized greeting and a strong opening statement that captures the reader's attention. ESL Teacher Cover Letter: The Breakdown

Jon is applying to an ESL teaching position with English Language Center. In his cover letter, he  reflects an understanding of the school by referring to its mission statement in the first paragraph. He also shows that he knows it uses the Communicative Teaching Method as the basis for its curriculum, a method with which he’s familiar.

Jon describes his skills and qualifications in terms of his TEFL certification, lesson planning abilities, and efforts to establish a comfortable classroom environment. He specifies that his lessons focus on pair and group work to maximize conversation among students, and he gives an example of a “high/low” activity he uses to support students emotionally as they adapt to a new culture.

By giving specifics, Jon illustrates his instructional skills and teaching methodology. His letter is clearly organized and provides insight into his experiences. Overall, Jon's cover letter shows that he’s a thoughtful teacher dedicated to ESL instruction. Before heading to the next sample, consider one important note about the letter's format.

A Note on Format

The letter above features a traditional format with Jon's name, address, and contact information at the top, followed by the date and the name and address of the hiring manager. He also signs and prints his name at the bottom.

This format is spot on for cover letters sent as a hard copy or as an attachment in a Word document. These days, though, lots of jobs have applicants send their cover letters in the body of an email or pasted into a text box on their application site.

If you're sending a cover letter in the body of an email or text box, then you usually don't have to worry about these headers. You can just start right in with the salutation (e.g., Dear Ms. Wassername) and type your name at the end.

Make sure to read and follow any application instructions so you know exactly how to send your materials. In addition to being thoughtful about your cover letter's content, you can be intentional about your letter's format and overall look.

10 Top Tips for Writing a TEFL Cover Letter

Once you’ve put together a stand-out TEFL CV ( thanks to our CV guide! ) it’s time to write an equally stand-out cover letter. A cover letter is a crucial part of the job application process and can make the difference between being a good candidate, and a stand-out candidate.

Your cover letter is an opportunity to convince an employer that you’re the perfect fit for the role, so it should really show off your strengths and enthusiasm for teaching English as a foreign language.

Writing about yourself isn’t always the easiest thing to do, so that’s why we’ve put together these tips for writing a brilliant cover letter for any teaching job. We’ve also taken some advice from our friend Carl, whose cover letter seminar on YouTube is required viewing!

1) Research

It sounds obvious, but if you’re applying for a company, you’ve got to research them. You need to make it clear that you already have an understanding of what they do and what they offer, otherwise, they won’t be inclined to believe you’re suitable for the role.

It’s important for every cover letter to be tailored to that particular position – if your letter sounds impersonal and vague then that’s a surefire way of it ending up in the bin. Doing some background research will allow you to talk about what it is that attracted you to the role and why you think you’d be a good fit.

Then, before you start to write your cover letter, read the job description properly. Read and reread it, asking yourself questions like “am I right for the role?”, “what suitable experience do I have?”.

2) Address the letter to the correct person

You should always try to find out the name of the person handling the job applications. If this isn’t listed in the job advert, you can contact the company to ask for a name or do a bit of research online. 

If you don’t know the name and can’t get this information then ‘Dear Hiring Manager’ or ‘Dear Sir/Madam’ are common alternatives you can use. Start the email friendly, says Carl, with a message like “Hope you’re having a nice day” - this leaves a good initial impression.

Then, state your intentions. Why are you getting in touch? You’re applying for a job - once you’ve addressed the letter properly, say where you saw the job advert, and make it clear you’re applying for that job.

3) Provide evidence of your qualities

Outline how you match the job description. Pick out top qualities that are stated in the job advert/job specification and provide evidence to back them up.

For example, if you are trying to show you have ‘great communication skills’ support this with evidence from previous employment or a University course. Perhaps you have experience delivering presentations or working successfully in a team where communicating regularly was vital. Make sure you’re not just repeating what’s on your CV.

In some ways, it helps to think of the cover letter as a puzzle. You have the pieces that fit, whether it’s a specific qualification or an attribute from your career or education (with evidence and examples). The job description should be your guide here - TEFL Org tutor Carl says it’s best to either print out the job description and use it, or have it in a separate window or screen on your computer.

4) Don’t just focus on your qualifications

Yes, qualifications are great and a requirement for most jobs, however, employers want to hear about your skills and experience too. Remember, your qualifications are already listed in your CV so you don’t need to point them out again unless you’re going into more detail. 

If you have a TEFL qualification and have completed a classroom course then you can talk about the skills you gained specifically from the classroom course. Do you have experience working with children? Or experience in training or giving presentations? Anything relevant to the position should be included.

5) Make sure it’s neat

Ensure that your cover letter and CV are typed in an easy-to-read font (don’t try getting fancy here!) and are presented clearly. In your cover letter, make sure to use proper paragraphs, and if you’ve written too much to put on one side of A4 (or whatever the employer is insisting upon for the length of a cover letter), don’t squeeze it all in with a tiny font.

Neatness includes making sure that your text is coherent. If you’ve got too much text, you can afford to get rid of a few sentences that are superfluous. We’ll cover this more in point 7.

6) Proofread

Always, always, always check your spelling and grammar multiple times – even if you’ve used a spell checker or a tool like Grammarly ! 

Employers won’t be particularly impressed with an English teacher whose cover letter is full of mistakes. What kind of teacher are they getting if they bring someone in who can’t spell check a document properly? It doesn’t bode well at all!

7) Keep it brief

Your cover letter needs to be concise and to the point – absolutely no waffling! 

Keep it to one side of A4 and make sure everything included is necessary and you’re not just repeating what’s already listed on your CV. You’re trying to sell yourself for a specific job role, you’re not telling your life story. Think of the job description as a list of items to tick off - if you’ve done that, then you’ve got enough. 

8) Write individual cover letters for each position you apply for

We already mentioned this at the beginning, but it bears repeating. You need to tailor the letter to suit the position that you are applying for. Show that you have made an effort – employers will be able to tell instantly if you’ve just sent the same letter to ten different people.

Having a template to work from isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if you’re writing a lot of cover letters and not getting interviews, then it probably means you aren’t personalising your cover letters enough. Yes, it can feel like a lot of effort, but it really makes a difference.

Consider this: if it was you in the employer’s position, you’d want something interesting to read, that ticks all the boxes and has specific interest in your company or institution. 

9) Be yourself

When companies are recruiting they can sometimes be working through a high volume of applications and many of those will sound exactly the same. Stand out by being yourself, a cover letter shouldn’t be dull – inject some personality in there!

10) Be sure to include your contact details

This should be right at the top of your cover letter. Give the employer options of how to contact you including your email address, telephone number, Skype handle, etc. You do not need to include your age or home address.

Opening the letter.

This should be short and to the point. You should include why you are writing the letter, what position you are applying for and where you found the job advert.

Main content of letter

The next two or three paragraphs should state why you are applying for the position. What attracted you to the role? Why are you interested in working for the company? 

Why do you think you are suitable for the job? What professional/academic qualifications do you have that are relevant to the role? 

Make sure you refer to the skills/qualifications listed in the job description. You need to show the employer what you can bring to the company.

Last paragraph

Your final paragraph should reiterate your interest in the role and why you think you are right for this specific position. 

Specify your desire for an interview – you can add when you’re available for an interview and when you can start working. Finish by thanking the employer, stating that you look forward to a response.
