These instructions explain how to Install SparxSolver browser extension on your computer.

Download the Extension:

• Visit the Latest Release page.
• Download the extension.zip file.

Extract the Zip File:

• Unzip the downloaded file to a location convenient for you, such as your desktop or documents folder.

Open Your Browser:

• Launch your browser.

Access Extensions:

• Navigate to chrome://extensions/ .
• Navigate to edge://extensions/ .
• Navigate to opera://extensions/ .

Enable Developer Mode:

• In the Extensions tab, toggle on the "Developer mode" switch in the top-right corner.

Load the Extension:

• Click the "Load unpacked" button in the top-left corner.
• Select the folder where you extracted the extension's source code.
• Click "Open" to install the extension.

Verify Installation:

• The extension should now appear in the Extensions tab.
• Refresh the Sparxmaths website to see the extension in action. (If website is already open)

What can I do about students using online maths apps to do their homework?

• Some students may be using online apps to help them answer their homework questions

Apps that can help students answer maths problems are becoming more common, and as advancements in AI continue apace these apps are becoming more adept at understanding more complex problems. Some students are using these apps to complete some, or all of their Sparx homework for them.

• Responsible use of AI and maths help apps

It may be beneficial to remind your students that Sparx homework is adaptive, so although using these apps will allow them to complete their current homework quickly, this will make future homeworks longer and more difficult. There is also a danger that this would increase the level of difficulty above what the student would be able to complete independently. 

These apps can be useful as a tool for students to use if they are stuck on a question, similar to getting help from family members, but it is important that they first attempt the questions themselves to ensure that they continue to see questions at the correct difficulty level. 

• Managing use

At Sparx, we recognise that technological developments bring layers of complexity to educational study and believe there is likely to be a period of adjustment where we all adapt to the challenges presented, in a similar way to in the past when schools have successfully navigated the changing landscape of calculators and more recently the impact of the internet.

Whilst we work on understanding this problem in more detail, we've put together some suggestions that may help you identify and/or limit the effect these apps will have on your students' progress. You know your students best so will know which will be appropriate in your own setting.

• 1. Check written workings

Ask to see the students written workings regularly to see if they are writing things down. They are far less likely to be doing so if they used an app to get the answer.

2. Monitor students' difficulty levels

Keep an eye on students' difficulty levels. If you see that their level is above that which you would expect, then this may indicate that they are using an app to answer questions. Both time taken and the accuracy of answers power the algorithm to find the optimum working level for a student. Therefore, regularly using an app to answer questions in Sparx will see a student quickly advance to a level of work that would ordinarily be inaccessible.

• 3. Monitor the hand in summary

Use the hand in summary to view a student's working time and accuracy. If students are using an app you may notice them spending far less time than you would expect on questions, and taking fewer attempts than you expect.

• 4. Use data on the Insights page

The Insights Page could be useful to test the class on what they do and don't know after the homework has been completed. For example, Challenge the Class contains questions we deemed them to have answered confidently, so if they have used maths apps to do their homework, being asked to answer these could highlight gaps in their knowledge.

How does Sparx personalise homework?

A key aspect of Sparx Science is that the homework is personalised in order to be challenging yet achievable for every student.

Pitching difficulty and length of homework

Initially the difficulty and number of questions is determined by the Initial homework level assigned by the teacher.

Over time, Sparx learns a student’s ability and adjusts the number of questions and their difficulty.

A balance of new topics and spaced retrieval

Sparx Science homework automatically revisits previously-assigned topics in the Consolidation section of homework.

Each homework in Sparx contains:

• 40% Consolidation
• 60% topics set that week by the teacher.

Note: in the first few weeks of a class using Sparx Science, the there can be a smaller proportion of Consolidation or no Consolidation at all. In these cases, the number of questions from topics set that week is increased.

How do teachers control the contents and length of homework?

Teachers control which topics are set each week and the length of the homework (e.g. 80 minutes).

Teachers can also adjust which topics are eligible for Consolidation.

Teachers can override the  Homework difficulty   level at any time. Reducing the homework difficulty level for a student will mean fewer questions are chosen and that these questions are easier.
