Dr. Woodgate holds a Tier 1 Canadian Research Chair (CRC) in Child and Family Engagement in Health Research and Healthcare .  Her research program, IN•GAUGE , represents her dynamic approach to involve children and youth and their families and interact with clinicians, caregivers, researchers, and decision-makers in the research process, and to be innovative in the exchange of knowledge.   Dr. Woodgate works with children (includes youth) and their families across a wide range of health conditions as well as diverse communities. Dr. Woodgate embraces a human rights-based approach that views the highest attainable standard of health as a fundamental human right and promotes children’s right to participate and freely express their opinions and experiences, in accordance with their evolving capacities. Dr. Woodgate aims to improve child and family engagement in health research by studying it in a systematic manner how best to engage vulnerable children and youth and their families in health research. Dr. Woodgate’s work is important as improving child health outcomes depends on research that fully understands the experiences of vulnerable children and youth with under-researched health needs and their families  in health research.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a health related or social science discipline and have related training and experience in the fields of child/youth health research and qualitative research. The successful applicant will should be familiar with variety of research methodologies (for example qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, arts-based and/or systematic review methodologies). The successful candidate must be able to work independently and collaboratively on Dr. Woodgate’s research projects. Familiarity and experience in writing research grants and conducting systematic reviews would be an asset. Demonstrated record in writing including peer reviewed publications and previous experience in research project coordination is required. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Critical appraises and synthesizes health literature.
  • Prepare and manage ethics review and study access application submission; as well, complete study amendments as necessary and yearly renewals.
  • Responsible for the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of multiple research studies. 
  • Monitor and document the progress of project activities from inception to completion and setting up structures for managing multiple projects. 
  • Conduct research activities requiring a high level of autonomy including detailed operational preparation of research projects, collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and producing research reports, publications and presentations. 
  • Co-author and/or assist in the in writing scholarly publications and grant proposals.
  • Provide updates and progress reports to Dr. Roberta Woodgate, other members of the research team and stakeholders.

Position Summary

Columbia University Press, a premier academic publisher that supports the mission of Columbia University by publishing important scholarly works, seeks an Assistant Editor to provide general editorial, acquisition, development, and transmittal support to the Senior Editor for Science and the Editor for Business and Finance. Reporting to both the Senior Editor for Science and the Editor for Business and Finance, the Assistant Editor is responsible for providing general administrative support in acquisition, development, transmittal, and publication.

Responsibilities

  • Read and evaluate book proposals.
  • Draft and edit new idea memos.
  • Work with CU's Marketing team to prepare for a book's launch.
  • Solicit endorsements for the book jacket, draft jacket descriptions and author bios.
  • Distribute published books to authors, agents, peer reviewers, and blurbers.
  • Track initial peer review of selected proposals and manuscripts and manage payment of honoraria.
  • Manage secondary review of manuscripts under contract.
  • Assist in the final preparation of manuscripts and their release; oversee copyediting.
  • Secure endorsement quotes and follow up with authors throughout the publication process.
  • Serve as the liaison between the author and the production editor, and as the principal contact person for questions from marketing, production, and finance departments.
  • Manage permissions, author contracts, and author payments in a timely manner.
  • Draft and/or edit book descriptions and other book and author information for internal and external memos in consultation with the editor.
  • When appropriate, initiate correspondence with authors, reviewers, and advisors. Maintain and update book data in Biblio, the Press’s title management system.
  • Prepare profit-and-loss statements for memos and contracts.
  • Liaise with marketing, production, rights, and accounting departments.
  • Conduct regular meetings with editors to discuss projects under review and in production, and to report on progress and possible problems with particular titles.
  • Hire, train, and supervise interns each semester.
  • Apply for and manage publication and translation grants for individual books, where necessary.
  • Secure permissions for previously published text and art, where necessary.
  • Attend conferences in subject areas from time to time as a representative of the Press.
  • Take incoming book orders and answer questions at the Press exhibit booth.

Minimum Qualifications

  •  Two years related experience High school diploma or equivalent
  •  Experience working in an office setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors or equivalent.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented, and can work independently and proactively.
  • Knowledge of MS Office, G Suite, Filemaker Pro, and a basic understanding of relational databases.
  • Some publishing experience and/or a demonstrated knowledge of publishing process and financials.

Principal Duties

 We are recruiting for legislative assistants to work on a nonpartisan basis in the Fiscal and Policy Notes and Legislation functional areas.

  • A Legislative Assistant provides administrative support to the staff in their respective function.
  • Duties involve providing administrative and secretarial support to the Office of Policy Analysis.
  • Specific duties include tracking legislation, and editing, formatting, proofreading, and distributing correspondence, reports, and workgroup assignments.

Qualifications

  • Two years of general clerical or administrative support experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite.
  • Effective communication skills, including strong grammar and customer service skills.
  • Ability to set priorities, plan, and organize.

  • Availability for extended work hours, including late night and weekend work, during the 90-day legislative session (January-April). Standard office hours during the legislative interim (May- December).
