Here’s how to watch King Charles III as he addresses his nation after the queen’s death

Britain’s newly named King Charles III returned to London from Scotland on Friday to address the nation for the first time as its monarch .

The 73-year-old former prince — now the British empire’s sovereign ruler — is expected to deliver his speech around 6 p.m. local time (10 a.m. Pacific) amid Britain’s 10-day mourning period, the BBC reported.

The speech comes at the close of the nation’s second Elizabethan Age, and as Britons face an energy crisis, soaring costs of living, the effects of the war in Ukraine and the fallout from Brexit, the Associated Press noted.

Queen Elizabeth II speaks to a visitor at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

God save the ... King? Brits are getting ready to sing a different national anthem

Queen Elizabeth II’s death means that the words to the British national anthem will revert back to the original version first sung publicly in 1745.

Sept. 8, 2022

The address will be televised and carried across all major channels and TV networks in the U.K., as well as many in the U.S. BBC One will carry the address on all of its news channels, as well as ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky News.

The king’s speech (not to be confused with the Oscar-winning 2010 film ) will also likely be streamed on the royal family’s official social media accounts and YouTube channel , where Charles’ public movements have been streaming all day. Tech giants Facebook and Twitter are also expected to stream the address on their platforms.

Following an extended session in Parliament on Friday morning that paid tribute to the late queen, Lindsay Hoyle, the speaker of the House of Commons, announced the king’s speech , Variety said. Regular business in Parliament has been suspended and lawmakers will spend two days offering their memories and reflections on the queen, according to the Associated Press.

Senior lawmakers will also take an oath to King Charles III, who is scheduled to have an audience with Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss on Friday. Truss, formerly Britain’s foreign secretary , was officially appointed by the queen Tuesday.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that Charles will officially be anointed king on Saturday at 10 a.m. local time (2 a.m. Pacific) at St. James’s Palace in London. The Accession Council — a ceremonial body comprised of past and present senior politicians, as well as Commonwealth high commissioners and others, and the lord mayor of London — will preside over the ceremony.

The palace on Thursday referred to the former Prince of Wales as “The King” and his wife, Camilla, as “The Queen Consort,” signaling that the line of succession had already been activated.

A formal coronation at Westminster Abbey will follow, though it remains unclear when. Queen Elizabeth II succeeded her father , King George VI, immediately after his February 1953 death, but her formal — and televised — coronation did not come until June 1953.

Can King Charles put Queen Elizabeth’s legacy behind him and craft his own?

Elizabeth’s and Charles’ lives and temperaments diverged from an early age. What will his legacy be?

Sept. 9, 2022

About an hour after the queen was announced to have died “peacefully” at her Balmoral estate in Scotland, Charles released his first public statement as king and later confirmed that he would ascend the throne with the name Charles, as opposed to changing it in the manner of some of his preceding relatives.

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” he wrote in a statement.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world,” he said. “During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

After arriving in London, Charles was driven to the royal residence in an official Bentley, the Associated Press reported. A large crowd cheered as the car arrived at the palace gates, where he got out to greet well-wishers and look at some of the floral tributes placed outside for his mother.

Several shouted, “God save the King!” and a few broke into a rendition of the latest version of Britain’s national anthem , which is now titled “God Save the King.”

This Is the Speech Queen Elizabeth Would Give If World War III Ever Broke Out

"Let us pray for our country and men of goodwill wherever they may be," the speech reads

It’s the speech Queen Elizabeth hopes she never has to deliver.

A speech prepared back in the ’80s for the Queen to give in the event that World War III breaks out was revealed last week. The address was written in the event this does occur, and she needs to address the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

The speech was released by the government last week under the 30-year rule , and is reflective of the time it was written — with a “planned” broadcast date of March 4, 1983.

The Queen’s speech was set to begin with a reference to her annual Christmas address. “The horrors of war could not have seemed more remote as my family and I shared our Christmas joy with the growing family of the Commonwealth,” the speech reads. “Now, this madness of war is once more spreading through the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive against great odds.”

She also recalls the outbreak of World War II, which occurred just a few years after her father, King George VI , became the monarch following his brother’s abdication .

“I have never forgotten the sorrow and the pride I felt as my sister and I huddled around the nursery wireless set listening to my father’s inspiring words on that fateful day in 1939,” the speech continues. “Not for a single moment did I imagine that this solemn and awful duty would one day fall to me.”

Going on, the Queen talks about the fears that everyone will face, either going off to war themselves or sending their loved ones there. At the time the speech was written, her second son Prince Andrew was active in the navy, and she made a personal mention of him, too.

“My husband and I share with families up and down the land the fear we feel for sons and daughters, husbands and brothers who have left our side to serve their country,” it reads. “My beloved son Andrew is at this moment in action with his unit and we pray continually for his safety and for the safety of all servicemen and women at home and overseas.”

Of course, the Queen’s speech also offers words of hope and encouragement, even in the face of another global crisis.

“But whatever terrors lie in wait for us all, the qualities that have helped to keep our freedom intact twice already during this sad century will once more be our strength.”

She continues: “It is this close bond of family life that must be our greatest defense against the unknown. If families remain united and resolute, giving shelter to those living alone and unprotected, our country’s will to survive cannot be broken.”

The speech ends as you might expect, with an encouragement to pray for those fighting and a blessing for the country.

“As we strive together to fight off the new evil, let us pray for our country and men of goodwill wherever they may be. God Bless you all.”

The Queen has a secret speech if World War III breaks out. This is what it says

The Queen has a secret speech if World War III breaks out. This is what it says

Ever since Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to invade Ukraine on February 24, the entire world has been on a state of alert with the prospect of the conflict growing larger.

Within days, the Russian leader put nuclear deterrence forces on high alert. Analysts have suggested the threats were to warn off Ukraine allies to not intervene.

Putin has once again issued such warnings, saying any country trying to intervene in the conflict will face a "lightning-fast" response . Speaking to Russian lawmakers in the northern city of St Petersburg on Wednesday (April 27), Putin said: "If someone from the outside tries to intervene in Ukraine and create strategic threats for Russia, our response will be lightning fast,"

"We have all the tools [to respond] that no one can boast of. And we will not be bragging about them, we will use them if necessary."

Should the conflict ever touch UK soil, Queen Elizabeth II, who has many planned speeches for major events, has one that she will read in the event that the British citizens face a nuclear war or World War III.

Sign up to our new free Indy100 weekly newsletter

The Queen's Speech

The speech was originally written in 1983, during the height of the Cold War, and was made public in 2013 under the 30-year rule by the National Archives.

Certain aspects of the speech are now outdated, such as Prince Andrew being in action for the Royal Navy, but it remains a prescient and sobering text.

Written as if The Queen was broadcasting the message at midday on Friday 4 March 1983, she starts by reflecting on the joys of Christmas before personally sharing the sadness she felt when World War II was announced.

The BBC quote the speech as saying:

I have never forgotten the sorrow and the pride I felt as my sister and I huddled around the nursery wireless set listening to my father's [George VI's] inspiring words on that fateful day in 1939 [at the start of the World War II]. Not for a single moment did I imagine that this solemn and awful duty would one day fall to me. But whatever terrors lie in wait for us all, the qualities that have helped to keep our freedom intact twice already during this sad century will once more be our strength.

She adds that the terror now comes from technology rather than soldiers or airmen.

We all know that the dangers facing us today are greater by far than at any time in our long history. The enemy is not the soldier with his rifle nor even the airman prowling the skies above our cities and towns but the deadly power of abused technology.

Her Majesty goes on to emphasise the importance of family in such troubling times before concluding:

My message to you therefore is simple. Help those who cannot help themselves, give comfort to the lonely and the homeless and let your family become the focus of hope and life to those who need it. As we strive together to fight off the new evil, let us pray for our country and men of goodwill wherever they may be. God Bless you all.

The speech was devised as part of the wargaming exercise which envisioned how the UK would respond to a potential nuclear attack from the Soviet Union.

We certainly hope that we never have to hear a version of this speech, but if you want to read it you can find it below:

When I spoke to you less than three months ago we were all enjoying the warmth and fellowship of a family Christmas. Our thoughts were concentrated on the strong links that bind each generation to the ones that came before and those that will follow. The horrors of war could not have seemed more remote as my family and I shared our Christmas joy with the growing family of the Commonwealth. Now this madness of war is once more spreading through the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive against great odds. I have never forgotten the sorrow and the pride I felt as my sister and I huddled around the nursery wireless set listening to my father's inspiring words on that fateful day in 1939. Not for a single moment did I imagine that this solemn and awful duty would one day fall to me. We all know that the dangers facing us today are greater by far than at any time in our long history. The enemy is not the soldier with his rifle nor even the airman prowling the skies above our cities and towns but the deadly power of abused technology. But whatever terrors lie in wait for us all the qualities that have helped to keep our freedom intact twice already during this sad century will once more be our strength. My husband and I share with families up and down the land the fear we feel for sons and daughters, husbands and brothers who have left our side to serve their country. My beloved son Andrew is at this moment in action with his unit and we pray continually for his safety and for the safety of all servicemen and women at home and overseas. Student says school withheld his diploma after he ‘went off-script’ during graduation speech

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. ( WXIX /Gray News) - A recent graduate in Kentucky says his high school withheld his diploma for days after he went off-script while giving a speech during a graduation ceremony.

Micah Price said he ultimately received his diploma, but it was five days after the ceremony was held.

According to Price, he submitted eight drafts of his speech to the school and was told to take out portions that focused heavily on religion.

Price said he took parts out of the final draft, but when the opportunity presented, he “went off-script” while giving the commencement speech.

One of his goals, since fifth grade, was to deliver a speech on his graduation day. But he said he also wanted to honor God.

“I prayed about it a lot,” Price said.

In eighth grade, he became a devoted Baptist.

“My lord and savior is your answer,” Price said in his speech. “He will give you the truth, the way, and the light. I must give the honor, the praise, and the glory to Jesus Christ.”

Price said he went to get the envelope with his diploma after the ceremony when a principal tapped him on the shoulder and told him he would have to talk to the school board.

“I knew it was going to be held,” Price said. “Before you do anything they tell us if you go up there and do a cartwheel or something stupid, it will get your diploma held.”

Despite knowing the consequences, Price said he had to speak from the heart.

“I simply cannot hold back what Christ has done in my life,” Price said. “He’s everything to me.”

Price said he’s joining the Air Force in July. He said the controversy over his speech and his diploma has him considering ministry work.

Representatives with the Campbell County Local School District did not immediately comment regarding the situation.

“I went against the rules. It’s my fault. I should be in trouble. I never wanted to bring hate to them or tear down the school,” Price said.

Pope Apologizes After Reports That He Used an Anti-Gay Slur

Francis’ remark came as he spoke against admitting gay men to seminaries during what was supposed to be a closed-door meeting with Italian bishops last week.

The pope, dressed all in white, sits in a chair and reads from sheets of paper into a microphone.

By Elisabetta Povoledo

Reporting from Rome

The Vatican said on Tuesday that Pope Francis “extends his apologies” after reports that he used an offensive slang word referring to gay men at what was intended to be a private meeting with 250 Italian bishops last week.

Francis had been taking questions from the bishops at their annual assembly when the question of whether to admit openly gay men into seminaries, or priesthood colleges, came up.

According to several people present at the meeting, who spoke anonymously to Italian news outlets, Francis stated a firm no, saying that seminaries were already too full of “frociaggine,” an offensive Italian slang term referring to gay men.

“Pope Francis is aware of articles that recently came out about a conversation, behind closed doors,” Matteo Bruni, the press office director for the Holy See, said on Tuesday. “The pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he extends his apologies to those who were offended by the use of a term, reported by others.”

The incident was first reported by the gossip website Dagospia and then picked up by mainstream Italian news organizations.

Francis has been widely credited with urging the church to be more welcoming to the L.G.B.T.Q. community, and he has delivered a mostly inclusive message.

Shortly after the start of his papacy in 2013, he said, “If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge ?” He has also met often with gay-rights activists, and he decided last year to allow priests to bless same-sex couples , though he said their unions could not be blessed.

The opening to the L.G.B.T.Q. community has been met with a backlash from conservative Catholics. The decision to bless same-sex couples, for example, was widely criticized by bishops in conservative areas of the church, such as many in Africa , who say the practice contradicts church doctrine.

The Vatican quickly explained that blessings are not formal rites and do not undercut church teaching against same-sex marriage.

At the same time, the church has remained firm in its decision not to allow openly gay men to become priests.

A document issued in 2005 under Pope Benedict XVI, Francis’ predecessor, excluded most gay men from the priesthood with few exceptions, barring in strong and specific language candidates “who are actively homosexual, have deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called ‘gay culture.’”

The document allowed ordination only for candidates who had experienced “transitory” homosexual tendencies that were “clearly overcome” at least three years before ordination as a deacon, the last step before priesthood.

Under Francis, the Vatican’s Congregation for Clergy issued a document in 2016 that restated the 2005 ban. The document said that the church could not overlook the “negative consequences that can derive from the ordination of persons with deep-seated homosexual tendencies.”

In a 2018 interview, published as a book , Francis underscored that he was concerned about relationships between homosexual candidates for priesthood and other religious posts, who take vows of celibacy and chastity and then end up living double lives.

“In consecrated life or that of the priesthood, there is no place for this type of affection,” the pope said in the book. “For that reason, the church recommends that persons with this deep-seated tendency not be accepted for ministry or consecrated life.”

Francis had already made these concerns known to Italian bishops. In another closed-door session in 2018, reported by the Italian news media , Francis said men with “deep-rooted” homosexual tendencies should not be allowed to enter into seminaries.

“If in doubt, do not let them enter,” the pope told the bishops.

That comment prompted reaction , with some progressives warning that it could foster hostility within the church toward L.G.B.T.Q. Catholics.

Francis is reported to have used the slur last week in responding to questions at the conference of Italian bishops, which recently adopted a document regarding the regulations for seminaries. The document has not been made public, as it is awaiting Vatican approval.

While Francis DeBernardo, director of New Ways Ministry, which advocates on behalf of L.G.B.T.Q. Catholics, welcomed Francis’ apology for using “a careless colloquialism,” he said he was disappointed “that the pope did not clarify specifically what he meant by banning gay men from the priesthood.”

“Without a clarification,” Mr. DeBernardo said, “his words will be interpreted as a blanket ban on accepting any gay man to a seminary.” He called on the pope to “provide a clearer statement on his views about gay priests, so many of whom faithfully serve the people of God each day.”

An article published by The New York Times in 2019 took a look at some two dozen priests and seminarians in the United States who shared details of their lives as gay men within the church . Though only a handful of priests in the United States have come out publicly, gay priests and researchers estimate that gay men probably make up at least 30 to 40 percent of the Catholic clergy in the United States. Like all Catholic priests, they take a vow of celibacy.

In reporting the incident, some Italian news outlets have suggested that Francis used the term jokingly or that, as a nonnative Italian speaker, he was unaware of the gravity of the slur.

Known for an informal, avuncular style, Francis is no stranger to linguistic gaffes.

Shortly after his election as pope, he told a group of nuns that they should be mothers, “not a spinster.” Two years later, speaking to reporters during an i n-flight news conference , Francis said that should a friend ever insult the pope’s mother, “he’ll get punched for it! This is normal! It is normal.” Also in 2015, referring to contraception, Francis said: “Some people believe that — pardon my language — in order to be good Catholics, we should be like rabbits. No. Responsible parenthood.”

And this was not his first public apology. After a video showed Francis twice slapping the hands of a woman who had grabbed his while he was greeting the faithful in December 2020, he apologized. “Many times we lose our patience,” he said during his weekly audience the day after the incident. “I do, too, and I’m sorry for yesterday’s bad example.”

In its statement Tuesday, the Vatican spokesman avoided confirming that the pope had used the term reported in Italian media, as the Vatican does not reveal what the pope says behind closed doors. But the statement did say that Francis had “stated on several occasions, ‘In the church there is room for everyone, for everyone! No one is useless, no one is superfluous. There is room for everyone. Just as we are, everyone.’”

An earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to Pope Francis’ decision to allow priests to bless same-sex couples. The pope permitted priests to bless the couples, not same-sex unions.

All the 'Queen Charlotte' references in 'Bridgerton' season 3

  • Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Bridgerton" season three, part one.
  • "Bridgerton" season three has some callbacks to the events of "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story."
  • Here are the most important "Queen Charlotte" references in "Bridgerton" season three, part one.

Insider Today

The latest season of "Bridgerton" includes a few callbacks to " Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story " that some fans may have missed.

After two successful seasons of " Bridgerton ," Netflix created the "Queen Charlotte" spin-off in an effort to expand the hit show into a franchise like Star Wars or Marvel.

The 2023 spin-off is set decades before the main show and delves into the history of fan-favorite supporting " Bridgerton " characters —Brimsley (Hugh Sachs), Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh), Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), and Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel).

Some scenes are also set in the main "Bridgerton" timeframe, though it's not clear when these scenes are set. With the release of "Bridgerton" season three, it's clear that these scenes are set just after season two, and there are further references to "Queen Charlotte" in the new episodes.

Here are five "Queen Charlotte" references in "Bridgerton" season three, part one .

Kate and Anthony's honeymoon is referenced in "Queen Charlotte."

queen speech 3

In one of the "Queen Charlotte" scenes that is set in the main "Bridgerton" timeframe, Violet Bridgerton, the matriarch of the Bridgerton family, mentions that her son, Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), is on his honeymoon.

In the garden party in "Bridgerton" season three, episode one, Kate Bridgerton (Simone Ashley), Anthony's wife, comments that the married couple just returned from their honeymoon a week before the event.

So the events in "Queen Charlotte" are likely set between seasons two and three.

Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte are closer than ever.

queen speech 3

Though Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury interact in previous seasons, they have never been as close as they are in "Bridgerton" season three.

This is likely a course correct after "Queen Charlotte." In the miniseries, we discover that Lady Danbury has been part of the Queen's personal circle since she came to England to marry King George (played by James Fleet and Corey Mylchreest).

Lady Danbury's hosting duties for the first ball of the season make sense now.

queen speech 3

As with all "Bridgerton" seasons, Lady Danbury hosts the first ball of the social season in season three, episode one. The reason for this was explained in "Queen Charlotte."

In episode three of the miniseries, young Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas) uses her new position as the Queen's advisor to host the first ball without permission from the other families of London's high society. With help from Queen Charlotte (played in this series by India Amarteifio), Agatha is successful and is honored with the responsibility of hosting the first ball of every social season.

Queen Charlotte's outfit at the celestial ball could also be a reference to her husband, King George.

queen speech 3

In episode two, Queen Charlotte and the rest of London's high society attend a celestial-themed ball. While Queen Charlotte's star-themed outfit and jewelry may be on theme with the ball or a reference to how she's trying to find a new debutante who "sparkles," it could also be a subtle reference to her husband, King George.

In "Queen Charlotte," we learn that King George is passionate about astronomy and has a personal observatory at his royal house. Though King George is not seen in part one, this could be a small reminder of the monarch's presence in Queen Charlotte's life.

Violet Bridgerton's new love story was prompted by events in "Queen Charlotte."

queen speech 3

In the main "Bridgerton" timeframe scenes of "Queen Charlotte," Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury become closer friends as they bond over being widows. In episode five, Violet confides in Lady Danbury that her "garden is in bloom," referring to her having sexual desires again. Violet has been single and grieving since the death of her husband, years before "Bridgerton" began.

By the end of the season, Lady Danbury encourages Violet to seek out a new lover. This might be why Lord Marcus Anderson (Daniel Francis), Lady Danbury's suave brother, is introduced in "Bridgerton" season three.

In season three, episodes three and four, Marcus and Violet bond over parenting and losing their previous partner. There is clear affection between the pair, and Marcus could be the new romantic partner that Violet is looking for.

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III will take part in his official birthday celebrations in a little over two weeks, as the monarch eases his way back into public duties while continuing to undergo cancer treatment, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Thursday.

The news came amid reports that Prince William’s wife, Kate, will miss a public rehearsal for the event as she, too, receives treatment for cancer. It remains unclear whether the Princess of Wales will attend the main ceremony, known as Trooping the Colour, on June 15, Britain’s Press Association reported.

Kate has revealed few details about her illness or treatment since announcing her cancer diagnosis on March 22.

Charles had been returning to public duties before Prime Minister Rishi Sunak last week called a snap election. That forced the king to postpone engagements that might divert attention from the campaign, raising questions about whether he would attend the birthday celebration.

Trooping the Colour is a 460-year old tradition in which troops in full dress uniform parade past the king with their ceremonial flag, also known as their “colour.”

Charles is likely to travel to the event by carriage with Queen Camilla and is expected to watch the Trooping ceremony seated on a dais, rather than on horseback as he did last year.
