Dissertation support for Master's students
Throughout summer 2020, the Library's Teaching and Learning Support team offered a range of workshops and taught sessions to support Master's students in completing their dissertations.
The sessions ranged from academic skills sessions open to students from all backgrounds, to information literacy sessions targeted to specific schools.
All of the sessions were conducted online, allowing students to participate wherever they are currently studying.

Academic Skills
Dissertation workshops for master's students.
From June to August 2020, the Academic Skills team ran a series of workshops on the Master's dissertation on Microsoft Teams.
218 Master's students from 50 countries attended one or more session.
Sessions covered:
- Getting started
- Research questions and dissertation structure
- Reading into writing: reviewing your literature
- Critical thinking: the discussion
- Academic integrity, citation and referencing
- Finishing your dissertation: editing and proofing
Each session included:
- A short workshop presentation on key aspect of the dissertation process.
- “Shut up and write” – 60 minutes dedicated writing time.
- Peer and tutor feedback on your work
- Q&A with Academic Skills tutors
The sessions were open to Taught Postgraduate students from all disciplines.

Chinese Foreign Policy Database
Offers insights into China’s foreign policy since 1949 and its relationship to ideology, revolution, the economy, and traditional Chinese culture.
Chapel Hill Expert Survey (party positions)
Estimate party positioning on European integration, ideology and policy issues for national parties in a variety of European countries.
Eurobarometer (public opinion in the EU)
Each survey consists of approximately 1000 face-to-face interviews per country. Reports are published twice yearly. Special Eurobarometer reports are based on in-depth thematic studies carried out for various services of the European Commission or other EU Institutions.

European Sources Online (ESO)
ESO is maintained & updated by the Cardiff University Library EDC. Searchable database indexing primary and official sources, commentary and analyses, media reports, journal articles, blog posts, monographs and academic textbooks, etc. Whenever possible, links to the full content of the sources are provided.
Statistical office of the European Union, providing the EU with statistics at European level that enable comparisons between countries and regions.
Parliaments and governments database
ParlGov is a data infrastructure for political science and contains information for all EU and most OECD democracies (37 countries). The database combines approximately 1700 parties, 990 elections (9300 results), and 1600 cabinets (3800 parties).
Who Governs Europe? (Party Systems & Governments Observatory)
Extensive database from Nottingham University on the composition (cabinets & party systems primarily) of European governments 1848-present.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office
Human Rights and Democracy Report (2003-) Free reports online assess civil liberties and political rights, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion, both for specific countries and around the world
Freedom House
Presents an overview of the state of democracy around the globe today. See especially its Freedom in the World comparative & historical data.
International Political Science Association (IPSA)
Includes the IPSA Portal gateway to top political science websites, its Paper Room of conference papers and various research committees focusing on specific aspects of political science.
International Studies Association
Promotes the study of international relations. Provides free access to many of its annual conference papers since 2000.
Manifesto Project Database
The Manifesto Project provides the scientific community with parties’ policy positions derived from a content analysis of parties’ electoral manifestos. It covers over 1000 parties from 1945 until today in over 50 countries on five continents.

US Crisis Monitor
Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) and the Bridging Divides Initiative (BDI) at Princeton University have launched a joint project that provides the public with real-time data and analysis on political violence and demonstrations in the United States It includes data on violence associated with Black lives matter demonstrations.

Open Book Publishers is a UK HSS publisher which enables you to access an openly available list of Open Educational Resources (OER) which includes books and textbooks for free.
Soc ArXiv / SocOpen
Open archive of the social sciences, provides a free, non-profit, open access platform for social scientists to upload working papers, preprints, and published papers, with the option to link data and code. SocArXiv is dedicated to opening up social science, to reach more people more effectively, to improve research, and build the future of scholarly communication. SocArXiv papers are moderated before appearing.

How to use this page
Use databases to find articles on a given topic which is called literature searching for assignments and dissertations. If you have never had training on literature searching, please see the Literature Search video below to help you create a search strategy on a given topic.
Many of the databases in the left hand column are available through the same platform such as Proquest and EBSCO. If you learn how to search one Proquest database or one EBSCO database, you will know how to search all of the Proquest or EBSCO databases as they all databases on the same platforms look the same but contain diferrent journal collections. Please see the short online and video guides to the right for each database or group of databases to help you learn how to search them.

- WARC video help
WARC has devised a marketing Strategy Toolkit developed by world leading market strategists which is free to use (with our WARC subscription) for our students and staff. The seven modules of the toolkit are meant to improve your skills as a strategic thinker and take around 8 hrs to complete. The toolkit is used by both people working in the industry and well as students and it is not meant to replace any teaching received at QMU but to enhance student experience as well as their CV to improve chances of employment. It is designed to give some practical marketing experience with a real case scenario but it relies quite heavily on the theoretical knowledged acquired through it. the mlearner's knowledge is assessed by marketing specialists at WARC.
The modules are grouped into three topics:

- Campaign Development

Dissertation. This section is not a full guide to the dissertation, but it will provide you with little hints and tips on how to complete it. First things first, attend all the dissertation classes, they have a step-by-step guide to the dissertation and for us they were only once every couple weeks, so it’s worth making the effort.

PhD and professional doctorate theses are open access, while undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations are available to QMU staff and students only.
