Creating a Job Winning Training Presentation for Your Interview

If you are interviewing for learning and development jobs, there is a good chance you will be asked to give some kind of presentation.  It is particularly likely if the position requires training delivery. This is usually one of the final stages if not the final stage of the process so you want to make sure to get it right.

There are a few key things to keep in mind as you prepare including:

  • Picking a topic

Customization

Interactivity.

I\’ve been on both sides of the process and will give you some tips to help you prepare for your training presentation interview.

Purpose of a Training Presentation Interview

Why would a company want to include a training presentation as part of the interview process?  It actually makes a lot of sense.  Speaking as someone who has been part of the interview process, I want to know if you can do what you said you can do on your resume and in the other interviews.  You have claimed to be this great, dynamic speaker, now show me!

If you are able to effectively demonstrate what you can do in the classroom, it makes it a lot easier for the decision makers to make an offer.

Picking a Topic

One of the first areas to focus on is the topic.  Now, oftentimes, a topic will be given to you.  It will usually correspond with the type of training you are going to be designing or delivering in that role.  For example, if the role is for a technical trainer responsible for training a software product, you might be asked to do a short training demonstration on that software.  If the role is involved in leadership or customer service training then you could expect to present on one of those.

The good news with any topic you are given is that you usually still have a good amount of freedom with what you do with that topic.  For example, if you are given the topic of \”customer service\”, there are a whole lot of directions you can go.  Customer service over the phone, service while selling, service after the sale, how to deal with difficult customers, anticipating customer needs, etc…

Even in the case of a more specific topic like \”xyz software\” you will probably have some leeway around what aspect of the software you teach.  For example, if the software is PowerPoint, topics could include how to create a template, how to animate a slide, how to use slide transitions, how to edit graphics in PowerPoint, etc…

I usually try to zone in on an area that I\’m very familiar with or, better yet, already have a presentation on.  Or, at least a presentation with some similar content.  That way, there is less rework to do and I can focus on customizing and practicing.

Sometimes, you will be told to present on \”anything\”.  Now, you can take that at face value if you\’d like.  You may think \”Cool!  I\’ll do my presentation on why the Marvel Cinematic Universe is superior to the DC Cinematic Universe!\”

I would be very careful with picking a non-business/non-work related topic.  It might work in the right situation.  Most of the time, though, I would play it safe.  Remember, you want the interviewers/decision makers to easily imagine you teaching an actual class for employees.

If you\’ve made it this far into the interview process, you should have a good idea of what types of classes you\’d be teaching in the role.  I would pick a topic related to one of those.

Once you have your topic figured out, it\’s time to start planning out your presentation.  If you already have a similar presentation you\’ve done before, you might be able to use that as a jumping off point.  Sometimes, you might have something that can be used as is.  Most of the time, though, you will need to make changes and updates.

Timing, for example.  If you have a presentation that you have normally done in an hour, you will definitely have to pare it down.  For an interview presentation, you are usually only going to have 15 – 20 minutes.

As you put the presentation together, I would also look for ways to incorporate the company you are interviewing with into it.  For example, putting their logo into it.  You can also look for opportunities to use any company slogans, policies or value statements throughout.  Anything that shows you have a good understanding of the company while still relating to the topic.

This should go without saying but it\’s very important to practice the presentation before doing it for the interview.  I can\’t tell you how many times I\’ve witnessed people who did well throughout the interview process and then bombed in the presentation phase.

It is usually pretty evident when a person didn\’t practice.  They fumble and stumble.  They sweat, cough, ask to start over.  It\’s amazing how unprepared people can be.  It\’s normal to be nervous for these types of presentations but I\’m talking about people who clearly did not prepare.

It can feel a little silly to practice.  To basically talk to yourself in an empty room.  But it is so important and helps tremendously for when you go to do the real thing.

The timing of the presentation should be pretty straight forward.  You are usually told how much time you will have to present.  A couple of pieces of advice about timing.

First of all, PRACTICE.  Make sure your presentation fits within the timeframe you were given.  You don\’t want to get up there and run out of time before you get to your best story or coolest activity or whatever.  When I practice, I will use a stop watch and also pause for places where I am expecting some kind of audience interaction (e.g. questions, answers, etc…).

Nine times out of ten, my presentation takes LONGER than I thought.  I usually have to go in and edit out some things to make sure I hit what I really want the interviewers to see/experience.

The other advice I have about the timing is to be flexible.  In other words, even if they tell you that you have 20 minutes, you should have a back up plan for what you will cut out if necessary.  I\’ve seen it happen and I\’ve also had it happen to me where, for whatever reason – technical, someone showed up late, etc… – the presentation ends up being cut short.  You have to be able to roll with that.  It also shows how you handle \”surprise\” situations in the classroom so it could benefit you that way as well.

If you want to be memorable in your training presentation interview, you HAVE to have some kind of interactivity.  This is another area that just floors me when I am an interviewer for training positions.  I see a lot of people who come in and just lecture.  I\’m talking about people who have listed a good bit of training experience on their resume\’.  How is it that they don\’t have a base understanding of how people learn?  When a person gets up and lectures the entire time, they are an automatic \”no\” for me.  Usually for the rest of the team too.

So, what kind of interactivity should you include?  Much of that depends on your topic but at the very least, there should be opportunities built in where you are getting the audience to answer a question or share their experience.  For example, if the topic is time management, you could ask for people to share their number one tip or method for how they manage their time.

It may also depend on how much time you are given to present.  If you only have five or ten minutes, that will probably limit the kinds of activities you can include.  But include something!

If you\’ve done any kind of training before, you probably have activities you\’ve used that you know work.  That\’s usually where I start and then I modify accordingly.  For example, if there was an icebreaker activity that worked great in new employee orientation I might modify that to fit into my presentation interview even if the  topic is something different like leadership skills.

Giving a training presentation as part of the interview process can definitely be nerve wracking.  If you properly prepare yourself, though, you will be just fine.  Following these few simple tips I\’ve listed will put you ahead of most of your competition and help you win the job!

What is an interview presentation?

As you progress further in your career, particularly to executive level, you may be asked to give a presentation for interview. Perhaps you’ve been asked to conduct research and present your findings to a panel, complete a task and show how you approached it, put together a business plan and present your ideas, or even give a presentation about yourself and how you would excel in the role. Whatever you are presenting about, how you approach it should remain the same.

Many people find giving presentations intimidating, especially during an interview when you’re already nervous, but it’s something that you may have to do throughout your career – the sooner you tackle this skill, the better.

Why are you being asked to do a presentation for a job interview?

Many employers opt for a presentation-style interview as it gives a better overview of your general aptitude when compared to, or combined with, a traditional question and answer interview, like a competency-based interview . The interviewer is looking for proof that you can do the job and that you possess the required skills and traits.

Additionally, if you put time and effort into your presentation, this will highlight to the hiring manager that you are committed to the role and enthusiastic about joining the company. How many times have you been asked in an interview ‘Why do you want this position?’ or ‘What is it about this role that attracted you to it?’. They want to know how much you want this position, rather than just any position.

How to prepare a presentation for an interview

Where do you start? What should you include? The presentation is your opportunity to showcase your knowledge, experience, and communication skills as well as your organisational skills and diligence – so start with the job description and person specification and pick out key skills and traits that the company is looking for. Then you can prepare your presentation around what they want to see.

For example, if the business is looking for someone creative, pay great attention to the style of your presentation. If it is looking for someone who is a confident public speaker, spend more time perfecting your speech. If attention to detail is paramount in the role, double and triple check your spelling and grammar. This is a great starting point and gives you something to build your presentation around.

What to include in an interview presentation

Although you may be tempted to go all out and show your potential employer that you are committed to the job, don’t fall into the trap of creating a 30-slide presentation with reams of text. Try to keep each slide short and significant and aim for no more than 10 slides. This ensures the information you deliver is memorable and will help you to stand out from other interviewees. Some interviewers may even give you a specific amount of time for your presentation, make sure you factor this in and don’t go over the time limit – otherwise you may appear to have poor time management skills.

Another way to make sure your presentation engages hiring managers is to include a range of formats to help you illustrate your points. Include graphs, statistics, diagrams, video clips, and images to help break up large volumes of text and maintain the attention of the interviewers.

If you are conducting research as part of your presentation, include quotes from industry leaders and/or research pieces. This gives your points authority and demonstrates your commercial awareness.

You should also try to incorporate the company’s colours, fonts, or style in your presentation. This will show that you have done your research and highlights your brand awareness.

Finally, check your spelling and grammar thoroughly! Small mistakes can really undermine the content of your presentation.

Tips for presenting at the interview

Presenting is a skill which can be learnt. Even if you are not a confident public speaker, the more you practice, the better you will become.

Present confidently and enthusiastically - Remember to speak clearly, make eye contact, and use open body language.

Don’t just read the slides - There is nothing worse than watching a presentation where the presenter has their back to you the whole time just reading reams of text from their PowerPoint notes.

Try not to talk too fast - Make sure you breathe, and take your time.

Practice, practice, practice - Ensure you are well rehearsed so that you are familiar with the structure of your presentation and are able to deliver it smoothly. If possible, practice your presentation with family members or friends to get used to speaking in front of other people.

Arrive early to give yourself time to set up the presentation and settle any nerves - Get comfortable with PowerPoint and presentation equipment. Make sure you know how to work any projectors, screens, or remote controls before you begin to avoid any awkward stumbles or pauses.

Stay within the allocated time - If you have not been given guidance on length, aim for the 10-minute mark. Time your presentation when you are practising to make sure it will fit within the time limit. If you need to reduce the content of your presentation, cut out the least relevant or weakest points.

Be prepared to adapt - You may have practised your presentation in a certain way, but the interviewer might not respond accordingly. Be prepared to be interrupted by questions or further discussion unexpectedly.

Breathe and try to enjoy it - By relaxing, you will find yourself presenting better and, if you enjoy it, your interviewers will respond to that and be better engaged with what you are saying.

Tips for keeping the interview presentation simple

It can take a lot of work to make something simple, yet effective, and when it comes to interview presentations less is often more. Keep it short - As previously mentioned, try to keep each slide short and aim for no more than 10 slides in total.

One idea per slide - To make sure your presentation is clear and concise, each slide should represent a different point/idea you want to make.

Stick to the important bits only - If you don’t think it’s important enough to spend time on, don’t have it on your slide.

Use the 4x6 rule - Aim for either four bullet points with six words per bullet point, or six bullet points with four words per bullet point. This way, your slides won’t look too busy.

Minimal text - Instead of writing paragraphs of text, use bullet points and a minimum font size of 24.

What's better for your interview presentation? Cue cards or presenting from memory?

Should you use cue cards in your presentation for interview or try to present from memory?

The answer to this question depends on what you feel most comfortable doing. If you find that having cue cards will help ease your nerves and ensure that you don’t forget your speech, then there is nothing wrong with that.

However, if you choose to use cue cards, you should not rely too heavily on them. You shouldn’t stand in front of the interviewers and look down at the cards continuously, neither should you write your whole speech out on the cards and read directly from them. They are cue cards for a reason and should only give you prompts on what to talk about. If your interview presentation has a lot of statistics on, using cue cards to remember the figures if you are unable to memorise them all is an excellent strategy.

What to do when things go wrong

You can practice your interview presentation as much as possible, but something may still go wrong and it’s important to be prepared for this eventuality. Here are some things that could go wrong and how to deal with them: Technical issues

There is not a lot you can do to prevent technical issues, especially if you are using someone else’s computer. But there are ways you can prepare just in case. Ensuring you have access to multiple sources of your presentation is key. Email the file to yourself and the recruiter, bring a copy on a USB stick and printed handouts. This way you are covered if anything goes wrong with the file you’re intending to use.

Your mind goes blank

Even those who are pros at presenting can sometimes lose their train of thought and find that their mind goes blank. The key here is not to panic. If possible, take a bottle or glass of water in with you and use this chance to take a sip, breathe and try to relax. Then look at your presentation slide or your cue cards and pick up where you left off. It may be helpful to repeat the last point you made as saying it out loud could spark your memory for your next point.

You are asked a question that you don’t know how to respond to

If you have allotted time at the end of your presentation to allow the interviewer to ask any questions (which is recommended), don’t worry if someone asks a question that you are not sure on. It may be that the interviewer is looking to see how you respond to a challenging question, so how you react is often more important than the answer itself.

If you do not understand the question, ask the person to explain. There is nothing wrong with doing this and shows more confidence than just saying that you don’t know. If you understand the question but are not sure of the answer, then admit that you don’t have the full answer, provide what information you do have, and offer to come back to them at a later date with a complete answer.

Below is a presentation for interview example. Use this as a baseline and adapt or reorder where appropriate based on the task you have been set by the interviewer. Slide 1 - Introduction – Reiterate the objectives you have been set and lay out the structure of your presentation so that the interviewers know what to expect. Slide 2 - About you – Detail your professional experience, skills and working style. Slide 3 - Company history – Give a brief summary of the company history, any milestones or awards. Slides 4-7 - Answering the brief – Give your responses to questions you’ve been asked to answer, the benefits and limitations of your suggestions. Slide 8 - Question and answers – Include a slide titled ‘questions and answers’ as a cue to pause for interaction. Slide 9 - Conclusion – Sum up the key points you have made, reach a decision, and explain your reasoning. Slide 10 - Personal achievements – End the interview on a high with a brief slide highlighting achievements that show how you will succeed in the role.

If there are words that you are not sure about, do some research and try your best to figure out what the organisation is asking of you. If you are still unsure, you could ask your recruiter as they may have seen this brief before and can give you an idea. If you are dealing directly with the hiring manager, then it may be worth checking that your interpretation of the brief is correct.

It is better to ask the question than present on something completely different to what the interviewer has asked. However, instead of saying to them that you don’t understand the brief and leaving it at that, tell them your understanding of it and ask if this is correct. How to Start a Presentation for an Interview

Interviews can be really tense situations. Throwing a presentation into the mix only adds to that pressure. What can you do to ease those nerves and start your presentation in a calm and confident manner? How can you captivate your audience and help assure them that you’re the right candidate for the job? This article outlines a number of useful tips to guide your interview preparation and address these important questions.

Preparing a Presentation – Where to Begin?

If you plan your presentation in advance you’ll increase your likelihood of success. Make sure you know what type of message you want to convey and think about the most effective way to deliver this message.

Ready? Take a look at our six preparation tips below.

1. Tell a personal story

Presentations can often be over-professional, impersonal affairs. But they don’t have to be.

Adding a storytelling element to your presentation can ensure that your delivery is both down-to-earth and professional at the same time, which will make your presentation a whole lot more engaging overall.

Think of any personal experiences of your own that are applicable to the content of your presentation. Do you have anything of value that could aid the delivery and help with engagement?

Example: Say you have an interview for a HR role at an international corporation HQ in the city. You’ve been told that you need to deliver a presentation on how you manage conflict in the workplace (we’ll use this example throughout).

By opening with a relevant story of your own about a time when you successfully and diplomatically resolved a conflict outside of the workplace – at home, or wherever it may be – you’ll:

  • Demonstrate your competency in this area
  • Ease any tension that is characteristic to the situation
  • Capture your audience’s attention with an account that can only be delivered by you – making it unique and remarkable
  • Openly display your personality and values, enabling the employer to make a better informed selection decision – beneficial for everyone involved

2. Use media

Starting your presentation can be the most difficult bit.

You’re tongue-tied, stumbling over words and your heart is beating so fast.

Give yourself the opportunity to collect yourself by using some form of media early on in the presentation.

Begin your presentation with a quick introduction to who you are and what the presentation is about (use a title slide and a ‘What I’ll cover’ slide, for example) and then incorporate a media break.

Use video, music, an infographic – whatever, as long it’s suitable and on-topic, use any form of media that allows you to have a breather and recover from that all too familiar fear of public speaking.

Example: so here we are again – biting your lips and fumbling with your hands as you wait to open your presentation for the HR role.

Your presentation is on conflict management, a fairly sensitive topic, which you’ll want to get right. But don’t sweat it; simply introduce yourself and your specific presentation details/content, then bring in an attention-consuming piece of useful media.

In our case, it could be a funny clip of workplace conflict from a TV Program such as The Office* – this will lighten the mood and create a talking point. You’ll be back in the driver’s seat, and you’ll be surprised by how quickly those nerves calmed down.

* Disclaimer: implement with appropriateness! Only you can decide on what sort of media will be acceptable to use in your situation, so think about this one carefully.

Open your presentation with conviction by using a blank slide as your second slide.

Once you’ve introduced yourself and the topic of your presentation, most people will expect a thoroughly professional delivery from there on in.

Surprise them; switch the attention to you, shatter expectations, disrupt conventional presentation practice and display clear confidence in your ability to speak independently.

Using such a brave tactic will help in stimulating and retaining interest in your presentation throughout, and perhaps keep you top of mind when the employer is making a selection decision.

It will also show your potential employer just how much you know about the topic at hand.

Example: Conflict solving requires someone with a calm temperament and an almost instinctive ability to thoroughly – and empathetically – understand the issues faced by people other than yourself.

Show that you’re able to remain calm under scrutiny with all eyes in the room on you and truly understand a topic without any form of prompt using this tactic.

4. Incorporate props

Presentations can sometimes be a little boring to watch and listen to.

That’s no fault of your own; one person talking for a prolonged period of time is not a normal situation – how often does that actually happen in everyday life?

Engaging your audience during a presentation is a common problem that is widely discussed. I won’t go into it here as that’s not the core purpose of this post.

So what props should I use? Think what you can use/bring that will be both relevant and add value to your presentation.

If you can’t think of anything, then don’t bother – this tip will only work in set situations.

Example: For your conflict resolution presentation, you could bring in something that will create a talking point and engage your audience.

In this situation, we’ll go with a newspaper – you could start a debate about a widely discussed controversial topic, and use this quick exercise as an illustration of how you’re able to apply your conflict solving ability in any circumstance.

5. Start with something you know

It’s natural to be concerned about freezing and making mistakes in the presentation that you’re preparing for.

If that were to occur, it’d be likely to happen at or near the beginning of your presentation when your emotions are at their highest.

To ease those nerves and open in a calm and confident manner, it might be advisable to use content that you know inside-out – that way, you’ll feel more secure in the first few minutes of your delivery.

Once you’ve sailed effortlessly through that first part of the presentation, you’ll find the remainder of your content will flow just as easily now that you’ve settled those self-doubts.

Example: Your presentation on workplace conflict is expected to last 20 minutes – that’s a lot of content to get through!

Before you find yourself scrambling for the right words, simply introduce yourself and the topic of your presentation, then start with something such as:

  • Simple conflict stats that are easy to memorise
  • An article or study that you really like and have read a few times
  • Cornerstone conflict management knowledge that’s embedded deep in your brain

6. Engage your audience with an activity

A presentation is all about you.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be though.

By introducing an activity for your audience to get involved in, you can take the spotlight off you temporarily, and seize a rare opportunity to connect with your audience in a candid manner.

It’s pleasing just how much this strategy can reduce tension when starting your interview presentation. Once you’re able to start a dialogue with your audience, the unnatural situation becomes significantly more manageable.

Example: Well, you could make this one real interesting. Why not initiate a role play of a common workplace conflict, and then show the potential employers how you would deal with said conflict?

This is a fun exercise that shows your ability to apply the knowledge that you possess and will hopefully put your potential employers in a better mood for the rest of your delivery!

All of the techniques I’ve outlined above could be applied to almost any interview situation in which a presentation is required – now it’s over to you to get creative with how you’re going to actually implement these ideas!

In writing this post I made a conscious effort to consider different personality types in the interview presentation opening tips that I have suggested.

But these actionable methods represent only a very small proportion of ideas that you can utilise for making a lasting impression in your interview presentation.

We’ve been thinking about training this week, in particular the really boring training slides we’ve all come across during our corporate careers. We’ve decided to fight back and try to help participants to actually learn something. So, calling all facilitators, trainers, and training content creators, please take note of our 12 training presentation ideas!

Slides aren’t for decoration

Many presenters realise that their slides shouldn’t contain walls of text. But, unable to successfully visualise the information that they want to help convey, they replace the text with pictures that are only tangentially (or metaphorically) related to their training presentation content. The problem? These visuals don’t really help learners to understand or remember the training material.

So – don’t decorate – illustrate. Find images, diagrams, photos, graphs, or sketches that actually help learners to learn.

Animation helps explanation

Because so much PowerPoint animation is done badly, some so-called experts have had the daft idea that you shouldn’t use animation because it’s distracting. That’s like saying that you shouldn’t listen to music because Justin Bieber exists. Done well, animation is wonderful for explaining how things work – showing the parts moving around, processes in full flow, things growing and shrinking and colliding.

Think of the animations that help explain ideas in the TV news or documentaries. That’s what slides can do with the help of clever visualisation and relevant animation. ( Here’s a nice example if you want some more proof.)

Bullet points don’t work. Honestly.

Text slides do have a place in training presentations. To show quotes, for agendas and timetables, or for material such as definitions where the exact wording matters, and you need the audience to just read quietly for a bit.

But in general bullet points don’t work. Your audience can read, but they can’t read and listen to you talk at the same time. So, if you want participants to listen to you, don’t compete with slides they can read more quickly than you can read out loud.

Have enough slides

A lot of presenters are scared of having too many slides. This makes sense when slides contain big blocks of text – the fewer of these the better! But, if your slides actually help bring your training to life, and illustrate your learning objectives, you need the right number – not just as few as possible. If nothing changes on screen for half an hour while you cover a huge amount of content, your learners will benefit from seeing additional slides.

Use a slide every time you think it will help you to explain the points you are making.

Use a variety of visual aids

There are plenty of visual aids that can help with a training presentation. Obviously good old-fashioned whiteboards can work well. So can videos. So can physical objects used as props.

‘Show and Tell’ at school worked as well or better than a typical training presentation. Why was that? Harness that energy and you’ll be more successful.

Pay attention to design. Your audience will.

It’s amazing how many important training presentations look like they were designed by somebody showing off the two things they learned from a copy of PowerPoint 1995 for Beginners. Ugly text. Ugly graphics. Too much text. Inconsistent layout. No white space. The sort of presentation that says “we didn’t really try” but still gets used for onboarding all new staff, or at training sessions with senior management. It’s embarrassing.

People notice design – consciously or sub-consciously. If you want to give the right impression, and if your training presentation is going to be used in a way that warrants the expense, it’s a really good idea to involve a professional presentation designer. (At the very worst, use these three hacks – every time.)

Harness the power of stories

When I studied for my MBA (years ago, partly worth it, partly not) our strategy lecturer was full of great ‘war stories’. The most memorable lesson we had involved viewing interviews with the leadership of a small fast-growing food technology company, talking about how they planned to grow. The same team had been interviewed every few months. The company was aggressive about expansion and had spent a lot of money developing its product – it was hard to know how the story would end. The lecturer kept stopping the tape, and we discussed what was happening, and what should have been happening. We really didn’t know how things would end.

I studied 100s of companies as part of my MBA. Most I’ve forgotten. I remember that that one ran out of cash and stopped trading days before a large order came in (which they couldn’t take).

The right stories – told with enough detail, and where there’s genuine uncertainty and interest about what will happen – can make your training come to life.

Change pace

Given how obvious it is that training presentations that go on-and-on-and-on-and-on without any sort of change of pace can be tedious, it’s surprising how many people do them that way anyway. Is it because they haven’t got any better ideas? Or because that’s the way others do it? Perhaps.

Break up your training presentations with exercises, discussions, quizzes, videos, props, whiteboarding – anything to vary the pace and ensure variety for your audience.

Don’t use slides as handouts

There’s often an expectation that a trainer delivering a training presentation will also provide a handout. The idea is that a handout serves as a real reminder of what happened, so that participants can benefit ‘long term’ from training. The problem? If slides work as handouts they must be pretty much self-explanatory. If slides are self-explanatory, the trainer will just be ignored while trying to present them – the audience will read instead.

So, by all means provide a handout if you want to – but don’t ever just use the same slides to present and to print as a handout.

Turn your training presentation into eLearning

Using a tool such as Articulate Storyline, iSpring, or indeed using PowerPoint itself, you can easily record a narrated version of your training presentation slides. In this way, your slides can work as training follow-up, or even as an alternative eLearning version of your training.

Once you’ve put in the hard work of creating effective slides, spend a bit of additional time creating a valuable resource for on-demand training on online follow-up material, by recording narration and adding interactivity.

Does interactivity sound like a dark art – it’s actually pretty simple to do in PowerPoint .

Don’t read aloud

When you do need your audience to read slides, don’t compete with them. If they are reading, they can’t listen to you. If they are listening to you, they can’t read.

If you need the audience to read something, explain what you are going to show them and why it matters, put it up on screen, and shut up while you read it to yourself. Then when you see the audience are ready, continue presenting.

Find a presentation skills coach

If you are a trainer or facilitator, you should already be reasonably comfortable with presenting, understand the need to practice, and know that you need to learn your material. If you want to take things to the next level though, find someone – a peer, a professional, or a video camera and your own insight – to critique your presentation delivery.

Eliminate verbal fillers, think about language and phrasing, and work on how you interact with your slides. It’s hard to notice when presenting, but there’s always room for improvement.

What is presented in this article is not a list of training presentation “ideas”, but rather training presentation “tips”. The tips are very useful, so I thank the writer for that.

Mary, wouldn’t that just completely depend on what you wanted your training to be about? Given how different e.g. massage, fluid dynamics, and brain surgery are, it’s hard to give general ideas on what training presentations should be about. But I’m glad you liked the presentation tips at least.

In the training my company offers, we supply all the delegates with a pack showing the whole presentation on the left of each page with space for their own notes on the right. I know this is very common practice. However, as a presenter I’m always a bit confused by the fact that my animation is wasted as delegates can see all I’m holding back. Similarly, there’s no point asking questions because the answers are visible to them. And so on. So, if the presentation is right, what’s the right format for delegates’ notes, please?

Madeleine what you describe is very typical, but it’s also ineffective. Handouts should support a presenter, not undermine both the presenter and the slide. Why would I listen if I can read ahead on the handout (given that I can’t read and listen at the same time)?

Consider accessing this resource on handouts . But for those who just want a quick summary (i) consider providing slides only after the presentation (ii) consider a video/recording of the slides being delivered, not just a static snapshot (depending on the slides) (iii) let people take their own notes – they can always make note of slide numbers and refer back if you tell people you’ll provide slides after (iv) if you want to provide something for note taking, make it something custom-designed, that aids learning/understanding when learners fill in the gaps.

Most people treat small talk as a mere formality, a way to fill the awkward silence before diving into a real conversation. As a result, they try to skip this part of the interaction to get to the “real” discussion faster, viewing small talk as unnecessary and superficial.

While there might be some truth to that sentiment, it’s far better to know how to engage in small talk than not. This is especially true with job interviews, where small talk can help you establish rapport and leave a lasting good impression.

The ability to do small talk is a good sign that someone possesses excellent people skills. As a former recruiter myself, I can confidently say that between two candidates of similar skills and experience, the one who was more engaging in interviews is most likely to get the role.

Past Experiences

It’s customary for a recruiter to go over your past experience during your interview since it’s their best way of knowing what you’ve done before and what you can bring to the table.

A lot of people in these situations wing it by answering questions on the spot but if you really want to stand out, it’s best to craft those experiences into stories that put you in the best light. How do you do this? I’ll explain.

All good stories start with a problem, which is why you were hired. Maybe the company was having an image problem, which is why they hired a marketing professional with crisis management skills. Or perhaps they needed to increase revenue to meet certain projections, so they hired a business strategist. Make sure you make this part clear, as this will help make your story more compelling.

After the conflict comes resolution, so once you’ve shared the problem, it’s time to share how you contributed to a quantifiably positive outcome . For example, maybe you spearheaded a public relations campaign that improved customer sentiment by 30%. If you were applying for the sales position, you could share how you consistently hit 20% above quota for six months straight.

Anything you can share where you come out as someone who positively contributed to the betterment of your former employer will help you score points with your interviewer.

One thing worth mentioning here is that many recruiters will also ask why you left, especially if you were doing so well. It’s fine to be completely honest here, but within reason. For example, refrain from mentioning real names or discussing potentially proprietary information. And whatever you do, never air out dirty laundry against your previous employer. Some things are just better left unsaid.

Interests and Career Goals

During the interview, you may be asked about your interests and what you’re looking for in your ideal role. This allows the interviewer to gauge how good a fit you’ll be for the position and the organization as a whole.

To ensure a good outcome, make sure that you’re able to portray yourself as someone genuinely excited to grow in this role and industry. A good way to do this is to look at the job description for clues on what they’re looking for and incorporate that in your response.

For example, if the job description mentions community involvement, then it’s a good idea to mention the summer you spent volunteering at a local shelter. If the role calls for leadership, don’t forget to mention the recent project you spearheaded while your boss was on maternity leave.

Another common but equally important talking point is your career goals, which hiring managers use to determine whether you’re likely to stay for the long term. If you’re unlikely to fulfill these career goals in the company, then the hiring manager may think that you’re not in for the long haul, leading to higher turnover rates and additional costs for recruiting and training .

To remedy this, make sure that you align your career goals with the company’s expectations. Let them know that you intend to contribute to the company’s success while also pursuing professional growth. This way, you can assure your hiring manager that they won’t have to spend valuable resources again to replace you in a few months.

However, a good place to start is by asking about the specific team or department that you might work with should you get the role. The answer to this will help you learn about the dynamics of the team you’ll be joining, while also demonstrating your eagerness to work.

Another important question to ask about are the opportunities for growth and development . This question serves you in two ways: it lets you get a sneak peek at the company’s policies on upskilling while also signaling to the recruiter that you’re in it for the long haul — which, as I mentioned earlier, can only help you.

The reasons I laid out here for asking good questions are helpful to show your interest in the role. However, perhaps the best reason to do so is to gauge whether or not you really want to work with them and if the company is the right fit for you. After all, job interviews are not just about the employer evaluating you; they are also an opportunity for you to assess the employer. Rooting for you in your next interview!

Sam Altman says helpful agents are poised to become AI’s killer function

Open AI’s CEO says we won’t need new hardware or lots more training data to get there.

A number of moments from my brief sit-down with Sam Altman brought the OpenAI CEO’s worldview into clearer focus. The first was when he pointed to my iPhone SE (the one with the home button that’s mostly hated ) and said, “That’s the best iPhone.” More revealing, though, was the vision he sketched for how AI tools will become even more enmeshed in our daily lives than the smartphone.

“What you really want,” he told MIT Technology Review , “is just this thing that is off helping you.” Altman, who was visiting Cambridge for a series of events hosted by Harvard and the venture capital firm Xfund, described the killer app for AI as a “super-competent colleague that knows absolutely everything about my whole life, every email, every conversation I’ve ever had, but doesn’t feel like an extension.” It could tackle some tasks instantly, he said, and for more complex ones it could go off and make an attempt, but come back with questions for you if it needs to. 

It’s a leap from OpenAI’s current offerings. Its leading applications, like DALL-E, Sora, and ChatGPT (which Altman referred to as “incredibly dumb” compared with what’s coming next), have wowed us with their ability to generate convincing text and surreal videos and images. But they mostly remain tools we use for isolated tasks, and they have limited capacity to learn about us from our conversations with them. 

In the new paradigm, as Altman sees it, the AI will be capable of helping us outside the chat interface and taking real-world tasks off our plates. 

Altman on AI hardware’s future 

I asked Altman if we’ll need a new piece of hardware to get to this future. Though smartphones are extraordinarily capable, and their designers are already incorporating more AI-driven features, some entrepreneurs are betting that the AI of the future will require a device that’s more purpose built. Some of these devices are already beginning to appear in his orbit. There is the (widely panned) wearable AI Pin from Humane, for example (Altman is an investor in the company but has not exactly been a booster of the device). He is also rumored to be working with former Apple designer Jony Ive on some new type of hardware. 

But Altman says there’s a chance we won’t necessarily need a device at all. “I don’t think it will require a new piece of hardware,” he told me, adding that the type of app envisioned could exist in the cloud. But he quickly added that even if this AI paradigm shift won’t require consumers buy a new hardware, “I think you’ll be happy to have [a new device].” 

Though Altman says he thinks AI hardware devices are exciting, he also implied he might not be best suited to take on the challenge himself: “I’m very interested in consumer hardware for new technology. I’m an amateur who loves it, but this is so far from my expertise.”

On the hunt for training data

Upon hearing his vision for powerful AI-driven agents, I wondered how it would square with the industry’s current scarcity of training data. To build GPT-4 and other models, OpenAI has scoured internet archives, newspapers, and blogs for training data, since scaling laws have long shown that making models bigger also makes them better. But finding more data to train on is a growing problem. Much of the internet has already been slurped up, and access to private or copyrighted data is now mired in legal battles. 

Altman is optimistic this won’t be a problem for much longer, though he didn’t articulate the specifics. 

“I believe, but I’m not certain, that we’re going to figure out a way out of this thing of you always just need more and more training data,” he says. “Humans are existence proof that there is some other way to [train intelligence]. And I hope we find it.”

On who will be poised to create AGI

OpenAI’s central vision has long revolved around the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI), or an AI that can reason as well as or better than humans. Its stated mission is to ensure such a technology “benefits all of humanity.” It is far from the only company pursuing AGI, however. So in the race for AGI, what are the most important tools? I asked Altman if he thought the entity that marshals the largest amount of chips and computing power will ultimately be the winner. 

Altman suspects there will be “several different versions [of AGI] that are better and worse at different things,” he says. “You’ll have to be over some compute threshold, I would guess. But even then I wouldn’t say I’m certain.”
