PhD Programme

The Theological University Kampen facilitates PhD students in their PhD trajectory. If a doctoral candidate successfully completes this doctoral research, he / she may use the title of doctor. Theological University Kampen is a unique center of knowledge and research in Reformed and Protestant theology in Europe.

Our research deals with Reformed theology and Neo-Calvinism in the context of the wider Protestant tradition. In this way, we strive to make a meaningful contribution to the development of Reformed theology in a global perspective.

The university offers a fully accredited diploma with the opportunity to work internationally at an academic level. Doctoral students are expected to have an affinity with our Reformed identity and tradition.

What will it mean to start working as a PhD candidate?

A PhD is an exciting process in which the student develops creativity and originality, self-discipline, self-reflection and personal integrity. You must be fascinated by your subject and motivated to conduct academic research. In general, a student needs four years of full-time study to complete a doctoral research at our university.

New PhD projects should preferably suit one of our research groups:

  • CCMW is headed by prof.dr. Stefan Paas. The focus is on the role of the church in the Western (secular) context.
  • NRI is headed by prof.dr. George Harinck. The focus is on the tradition of Calvinism and Neocalvinism and its significance for public theology, society, and education.
  • BEST is led by prof.dr. A. Huijgen. The focus is on Biblical studies and core themes of Reformed theology.

Doing a Phd

If you have completed your Master's programme, and you are enthusiastic about doing research in your field, then maybe doing a Doctorate (PhD) might be something for you. A Doctor’s degree is the highest academic degree awarded by a Dutch university. You start as 'assistant in training' (aio) or 'researcher in training' (oio).

At Utrecht University

At Utrecht University you take part in education in one of the Graduate Schools and often also teach students. During the four-year PhD programme you work under the guidance of a professor on creating a research project that results in a dissertation or a series of articles in scientific journals. You can search for positions on research projects on offer or a position whereby you are free to submit your own research proposal. Read more on doing a PhD at Utrecht University.

Other options

The best way to find a PhD position is through networking with the professor in the field you wish to specialize. Another option is to search via www.academictransfer.nl . Here you can also find more information on doing PhD research in the Netherlands.

RMA Religious Studies, Utrecht University

Religious Studies

Religious Studies is a challenging, research-oriented Master's programme that prepares you for participation in international research and for a career in domains where religious diversity and difference are significant factors - in culture, art, and politics. Together, we use religious studies to think about hard questions fueling the fire of public debates. What should museums do with religious objects collected in the colonial past? How and what should children learn about religions in schools? What are the limits of religious tolerance? How do we create a society that is more welcoming to the stories of Others?

Icon of International students

Key research areas

The programme combines an advanced grounding in the central themes and theories of the study of religion, with ample opportunity for specialisation. You can choose and develop your specific expertise in relation to one of the key research areas of our institute such as:

  • Materiality of lived religion : This research area focuses on the use of the human body and objects in religious practices. Topics include practices such as praying, dancing, fighting, and fasting, and the function of objects within the context of religion, such as images, buildings, food, clothing, money, weapons, and digital media.
  • Religious diversity in contexts of globalisation and migration: This research area focuses on the role of religion in public controversies and political developments. Topics include debates about religion in relation to diverse societies, calls for gender equality, or the study of conflicts
  • Religious texts and practices : This research area focuses on the study of religious traditions from the perspective of authoritative texts and religious practices associated with them. Topics include hermeneutics, rituals, and the diverse uses of texts.

Partner programme

In this research Master’s programme, we collaborate closely with our partner programme at the University of Amsterdam. You will take core courses at both universities, and through electives and specialised tutorials you will have the opportunity to choose and develop your specific expertise.

Religious Studies is a selective research Master’s programme. Do you want to know if you are eligible for this Master?

Why this programme in Utrecht?

Active involvement in research.

As a student of this programme, you will become part of an international community of students, PhD researchers, postdocs, and senior scholars working together at a leading research institute. You will attend small-scale seminars and learn from renowned scholars, who will actively involve you in their own research.

Multidisciplinary programme with emphasis on methodology

This programme has a strong emphasis on transnational approaches and the multidisciplinary use of methodology - you will learn to work with theories and methods from Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and Media Studies.

Integrating different approaches

The Religious Studies programme focuses on Christianity and Islam, but also addresses Jewish and Buddhist traditions, local traditions (e.g. in Africa), and hybrid religious phenomena in contexts of diversity and in popular culture.

How do MNEs affect domestic workers in the Netherlands?

4 June 2024

phd religious studies netherlands

She received funding from A Sustainable Future (ASF) to obtain microdata from Statistics Netherlands to study how multinational enterprises (MNEs) affect domestic employees.

Motivation from municipality elections

My interest in MNEs and their effect on labour market is inspired from local politics. One of the points on the political agenda in the 2022 Amsterdam municipal elections was whether Amsterdam should make an effort to attract more international companies. Being a labour economist, I naturally thought about the consequences for the labour market.. It turns out that this question has been scarcely studied, but the Netherlands provides an ideal setting. First, it’s an attractive place for MNEs, given the geopolitical position and fiscal benefits. Additionally, there is detailed administrative data available that makes it possible to study this research question.

Local impact of globalisation

In this project, I’m asking ‘How does the presence of MNEs affect employment and wages in the Netherlands?’ I also want to identify the channels through which these effects develop. Multinational firms operate establishments in several locations (countries). Typically, they are more productive and larger in terms of personnel and revenue compared to domestic firms. The number and scope of operation of those enterprises has been increasing worldwide and in the Netherlands. That’s why it’s important to understand how those enterprises affect local unemployment, wages, and firms. Are local firms competing with MNEs for workers or can they reap positive (learning) effects from MNE presence?

What drives the effect of MNEs on domestic workers?

So far, 2 studies have found a positive effect of MNEs on domestic workers, in the US and Costa Rica. Wages of employees in domestic firms grow faster in local labour markets where more MNEs are active. In my research, I want to investigate further and find out why these effects arise. Possible explanations include an increased labour demand due to MNEs and wage competition with local firms Positive spillover (learning effects) is also another possibility.

There are potential positive effects on domestic workers when:

  • There are positive spillovers (learnings from MNEs), and the presence of MNEs makes domestic workers more effective and hence they receive a higher salary.
  • More workers are demanded in the local labour market and with additional labour demand, so wages rise.
  • MNEs engage in 'poaching' (hiring from domestic firms) and therefore domestic firms increase their wages to retain workers.

In my research I also offer an additional explanation of how MNEs have an impact: they have easier access to the foreign labour market and can hire (part of) their labour force from abroad.

Progress and preliminary results

This research project is progressing well, and I hope to have robust results by the end of the year. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the labour market effects of MNEs. What’s more, this is relevant to gaining a more nuanced picture of the labour market impact of MNEs. The results can be used by policy-makers as well. From the preliminary results, it seems that MNEs affect wages of domestic workers positively. Labour demand and positive spillover-effects appear to be roughly equal.

ASF funding for data

I use very detailed administrative micro data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), containing information from all employees and firms in the Netherlands. This data allows me to track every worker across firms and time. I was able to make accurate empirical conclusions about my research question. It goes without saying that the data is confidential and anonymised. But data-provision is costly. The grant from ASF allowed me to fund my project and follow this research interest.
