Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

Man talks to a woman on a computer screen using an online learning platform.

Well... choosing the best virtual platform depends on several factors :

  • What age group are you teaching?
  • How many students do you have in your class?
  • Do you need to set up tutoring spaces for kids who need extra help?

There are several things to consider before choosing a platform that is right for your students

One of the best ways to determine the right platform for you is to create a list of must-haves . Compare the list against each virtual platform's features and benefits. From there, you'll be able to settle on the best platform for your students.

Our digital world opens up a staggering number of virtual classrooms to choose from. Each platform has their own unique advantages. Like everything else, there are limitations to consider.

But what happens when virtual classrooms do not meet all student needs? It is important to point out several caveats associated with virtual classrooms:

  • Teacher compensation and workload require restructuring
  • Students may lose interest in completing homework assignments
  • Educators should be mindful of how student data is collected and stored
  • Students miss their friends and the social interaction they received at school
  • Technological limitations may exist especially for kids from low-income families
  • It is not always easy to prevent unwanted visitors from entering a virtual classroom
  • Unstable enrollment as restrictions lift and students attend traditional classrooms vs. virtual learning
  • Problems with internet access could prevent students from logging into classes and missing important lessons
  • Other limitations include length of each session and the number of participants allowed to enter the virtual classroom (this isn't an issue for paid versions of some platforms)

Before choosing a virtual classroom, consider the pros and cons of each platform and how they may influence your students' learning experience.

There are several wonderful learning options available to educational institutions and teachers. A little research will help you arrive at the best decision for your students!

Virtual learning is changing education

Young student sits at a table and watches her teacher on the screen during virtual learning.

For every state and school district, there are different opinions on the future of virtual learning. Some say it's here to stay while others insist a physical classroom is the best way for kids to learn.

Here are a few key points to consider about the future of virtual classrooms:

  • Online courses offer flexibility and accessibility for everyone with internet access
  • Several platforms offer an extensive selection of programs and courses catered to different interests
  •  Most online learning resources are less expensive than traditional in-person classrooms and lecture halls, making virtual education more affordable

Although it’s hard to predict what online education will look like ten years from now, many online learning resources will be available in the near future. Online studies have become a great way to supplement traditional classroom learning.

Your professional looking Academy in a few clicks

What is an online learning platform.

An online learning platform is an information system with a learning environment where learners can access educational content. Modern learning platforms support a variety of interactive learning and offer tools for educators to promote their courses.

Course Marketplaces

Most learning platforms are often called ‘online course marketplaces’ because they give learners the opportunity to search for and pay for online courses directly.

While some of these course marketplaces are used to feature online courses, the majority are more educational-based and strictly offer university-level education.

Why is it Different than LMS?

A typical Learning Management System (LMS) is used for corporate training, serving the requirements of a company’s compliance, certification, user management, and, often, cybersecurity.

While online learning platforms are more flexible systems suitable for a wider audience of learners.

How to Choose an Online Learning Platform

Choosing the right platform to use for online education is a very important decision. As a learner, it will define the education you are getting, and for businesses, it’s a big decision that will stick with you for at least 2-3 years.

Consider your options, and make a checklist (or RFP) of requirements before you start looking.

For Learners (Buying a Course)

Purchasing educational products is very different from physical goods. Learning is a deeply personal process, and you need to consider what will work best for you or your goals.

Instructors: It’s important to choose an instructor you feel comfortable with and trust. Consider whether they are subject matter experts, have the credentials to teach, and if there are examples of their teachings (e.g., an intro video).

Content: Check the level of the content and whether it covers your requirements. Review the course material and course subjects before signing up for a plan.

Certification: Review the compliance for professional certificates and find out whether they are given by credible educational institutions, organizations, or individuals.

Trust: When choosing a learning platform, you need to trust its process, support, refund policy, and delivery of the material. A well-established platform is more likely to offer high-quality content than a lesser-known platform.

Pricing: Consider whether the price works for you. Is it a one-off payment, subscription, pay-as-you-go? And think about the value you will get for the price you pay. Sometimes, it’s worth paying a bit more for higher-quality education.

For Educators & Instructors (Selling a Course)

When you are selling an online course , your considerations are different. You are the instructor selling the course and looking for a learning platform to host and deliver it.

Features: You are looking for the learning tools to deliver the course but also for marketing and sales features. Also, consider whether the platform is suitable for the type of course you have or want to build. Different platforms specialize in different courses, e.g., Video, Certification, Structured/Unstructured, etc.

Support: It’s important to have good technical support. Some marketplaces may barely respond to your questions, while other platforms might be challenging to use. Support can help you solve all your issues and make your life easier.

Reliability: You want to offer a high standard of quality to your students, and using a reliable platform to deliver your course is essential for that.

Pricing: Consider the pricing tiers or other associated costs. You want to ensure your business is profitable as you grow, and want to avoid any platforms that cost too much or take a steep cut of your profits as you grow.

Udemy makes course creation possible for everyone with the possibility of acquiring new skills. In doing so, it offers a range of online learning materials including PDF documents, PowerPoint, text, and video content, among many others.

Instructors can join Udemy and start teaching online , but Udemy takes a huge piece of the revenue and has control over pricing and discounting the course.

Pros & Cons

  • No setup cost (for instructors)
  • Geared towards self-paced learning and video courses
  • No need for highly technical knowledge
  • A Udemy app available for iOS and Android
  • Limited interaction with students
  • High competition between instructors

Learners: Udemy has a course for almost every discipline, but potential students should always read the reviews before buying one. The quality is not consistent.

Instructors: It’s great for teachers, instructors, educators, and freelancers who are just starting out.

Pricing/Revenue Share (for instructors):

To start charging students a fee for courses on Udemy, you will need to become a premium instructor. In such a case, the following conditions apply:

#10 Moodle: The Most Popular Open-Source LMS

A view of a course inside Moodle, an example from Fleetwood University. On the right is the course material, and left the course outline, above the menu.

Unlike the majority of LMSs, Moodle is a free, open-source learning management platform . You can also buy hosted versions of Moodle with technical support from many resellers.

Moodle is the usual LMS for higher education and is being used by many businesses as well. It requires a great deal of effort for setup, but may be the most customizable solution for elearning out there.

A large community of developers is still supporting it, and you can find or develop almost any feature you might require.

#11 LearnDash: Best WordPress Plugin for Learning

How you build a course on LearnDash by drag and dropping units.

LearnDash is the most popular premium WordPress LMS plugin in the market. With it, you can design, promote, and sell online courses. Some of the best features it offers are its speed and its drag-and-drop course builder, which make the process of course creation both easy and enjoyable.

LearnDash has the flexibility of WordPress , allowing it to be very customizable. You can add many more functionalities that are not natively built-in. The downside is that adding too many plugins may be detrimental and break the website, requiring a developer to do the setup or keep maintaining the site and offering support.

  • Cheaper than cloud-based LMS
  • Very flexible and customizable
  • Many add-ons that add functionality
  • Has an ecosystem of themes & developers building new functionalities
  • No free trial, but you can cancel within 15 days (if you don’t like the product)
  • The membership plugin costs extra
  • Every extension also comes at an additional cost
  • Self-hosting on your own server comes with additional hosting & developer costs
  • E-commerce features require a third-party plugin like WooCommerce

Instructors: LearnDash is suited for individuals and smaller companies, as it’s a low-cost LMS based on WordPress. It does not support most requirements for bigger, more complex organizations.

Learners: LearnDash’s interface is pretty easy to use and straightforward for learners. You will probably not realize when a course you bought is hosted on LearnDash.

There are two ways to use LearnDash – either getting the plugin or launching a fully hosted course website.

LearnDash plugin’s pricing is based on the number of site licenses:

  • 1 site license: $199/year
  • 10 site licenses: $399/year
  • Unlimited: $799/year

LearnDash Cloud (full-site) starts at $25 per month.

MemberDash (the membership plugin) starts at $199/year as a standalone plugin (does not require LearnDash).

Essential Remote Teaching Tools for Conducting Effective Online Lessons

Updated on: 19 October 2022

The sudden transition to remote teaching has left many teachers, as well as students, faced with various challenges, from not having access to the internet to finding the proper tools to overcome the boundaries of online teaching.

We have compiled a list of tools that you can use to enhance your experience with teaching online, or remote teaching as popularly referred to these days. You can go through the list and select the ideal online teaching tools for your remote teaching goals.

Remote Teaching Tools

Familiarizing yourself with how the tool or platform that you use works, is as important as selecting the correct tool.

Explore each tool and learn ways to maximize its utility to create a better teaching experience.  Your students will depend on you to instruct them on how to use the platform themselves.

There’s a range of remote teaching software available out there, and from them, we have chosen the best ones and categorized them based on their primary purpose.

Online Communication Tools

Effective communication is the key to successful teaching and learning, whether in a physical classroom or a virtual classroom. However, maintaining online communication with not one, but over twenty students is undoubtedly challenging.

Communication platforms help overcome it; they enable communication with larger groups, with video conferencing, instant messaging, audio calls , virtual rooms, and more, with any device and from anywhere.

Some of the tools in demand are,

  • Zoom
  • Google Meet

For a better teaching experience with these tools,

  • Create an agenda or a plan for each online class and share it prior to the lesson
  • Clearly explain the online etiquette students should follow during the class and what is expected of them prior to or at the beginning of the lesson
  • Have all microphones, except for the person who is speaking, muted. This helps cancel out the distracting noises and retain the focus of the students. Anyone who needs to speak can make a gesture to catch the attention of the speaker without interrupting them.
  • When delivering a presentation or sharing an image, document or file, give some time for students to take down notes, to view or go through them.

Online Whiteboards

Online whiteboards or digital whiteboards help emulate the classroom whiteboard/ blackboard experience with the students. Most of these tools offer an infinite canvas with shape libraries for creating different types of diagrams , charts, graphs, and other visualization purposes (i.e. creating posters, graphic organizers, etc.).

Creately is widely used by educators for a variety of purposes:

Creately Editor - Creately for Online Teaching Tools

  • As an online whiteboard where teachers and students can collaborate on the same canvas as they visualize ideas, concepts, etc. Moreover, students and teachers can connect via in-app video conferencing and track changes each other makes with real-time mouse tracking and change previews.
  • Create a variety of diagrams and visuals (i.e. dichotomous key diagrams, graphic organizers , lesson plans , etc.) needed for presentations, lessons, assignments, etc.
  • To share documents with students and colleagues for their output and feedback (with in-line comments)

Work Planning Tools

Maintaining a work schedule is even more important when you are working from home; especially during stressful times, a solid routine can help maximize the use of your time. You can use time management and scheduling apps like Google Calendar and Calendly to streamline:

  • Creating schedules to use in  your online classes or for personal use
  • Creating schedules of online classes and keep everyone notified of dates and times.
  • Scheduling appointments with parents and students; avoid double-booking a slot
  • Inviting parents, students or colleagues for online events (i.e. webinars)
  • Creating lesson plans and sharing them with students, administrators, and colleagues.

Learn how to create a lesson plan using Google Calendar here .

Social Media Channels

Social media channels provide a great platform for teachers, students and parents to stay connected.

Channels like Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, etc. allow the creation of exclusive communities or groups teachers can leverage on to

  • Communicate and maintain presence after online class hours
  • Share and store important information, presentations, and resources related to lessons
  • Conduct Q&A sessions
  • Encourage students to maintain communication among themselves and engage with each other while studying or doing homework
  • Conduct live events such as webinars (with Facebook or Instagram Live)

Document Management Tools

From test papers to lesson plans, there’s an array of documents teachers have to maintain regularly. A central location to store, organize, and manage all these documents is essential to properly keep track of them, especially when you are teaching remotely.

Tools such as GSuite , MS office , OneDrive , Dropbox , and Evernote simplify the process of maintaining the documents you own.

  • Store all documents, files, etc. in the cloud which allows you and your students to access them with any device from anywhere
  • Neatly organize documents in relevant folders and subfolders making it easy to retrieve them
  • Quickly share files and documents with anyone with a single link or as a file. You can also adjust permission settings, changing them to Edit, View, and Suggesting mode on GSuite apps.
  • Collaborate with students on editing and reviewing documents, add comments and suggestions and track changes with version history

Online Video Tools

YouTube and Loom are great online video tools for creating and sharing videos with your students. You can use these tools in a number of ways;

  • Record your online classes or lectures and share them with students
  • Students can re-watch the videos if they were absent or during exam revisions. You can also have the video recorded prior to the lesson and have it shared with the students when you are on leave
  • If you are teaching the same lesson to different classes, you can make use of a pre-recorded lesson to avoid repetitive teaching
  • Encourage students to learn independently with pre-recorded video lessons. The chance of students learning a concept better is higher when they understand it on their own
  • Share links to existing video resources online

Online Quiz Makers

Whether you are teaching online or in a physical classroom, quizzes are a great way to check a student’s performance.  Online quiz makers make it easy to,

  •  Create, format, and share assessments online
  •  Create answer sheets which allows you to easily track and score answers of each student

There is a plethora of online quiz makers that are both free and paid, starting from Google Forms .

Find more useful online quiz makers here .

Online Homework Platforms

One thing that is most challenging when teaching from home is keeping track of students’ homework.

Homework can come in different forms; essays, speeches, tests, etc.  You can use a combination of the platforms above to get students to submit their homework.

  • Google Docs – for essays and other written assignments
  • Zoom, Skype, and other video conferencing apps – for verbal assignments
  • Loom, YouTube, Prezi , Google Slides – for videos and presentations
  • Google Classroom – Distribute assignments, grade and send feedback

Did We Miss Any of Your Favorite Online Teaching Tools?

Most of the online teaching tools listed above are free or you can try for free and see how it works for you. Invite a colleague to explore the tools and select the ones that best suit your teaching objectives.

Online Teaching Methods

Well, these are all great! But for educators who don’t want to share their videos with the whole world; can use Google Classroom. Just add the material video in there. It will show up as a video with layouts like youtube, all the same except for the fact that only the ones in the class group will see. It is a good platform for assignments and easy to use effectively with google docs, google drive and google meet. The only con for me as a student is we can only add 20 photos to it. And these days actually we students teach the programs to teachers. 😉 Have a good school day!

Your article really looks good! It’s amazing!

WeBWorK Introductory Workshop for VT Faculty and GTAs

Virginia Tech Faculty and Graduate Teaching Assistants are invited to:

Introduction to WeBWorK for Faculty and GTAs |  Register here  | Download event flyer   Monday, May 13th, 2024 8:45 am- 4:30 pm Goodall Room (MPR) - 1st Floor Newman Library

WebWorK is a Canvas-integrated open-source online system for delivering and grading custom homework assignments in STEM courses. It has similar features to commercial products like WebAssign, MyLab, and MasteringPhysics, but has no cost for students.

This is a one-day workshop for Virginia Tech faculty, instructors, and GTAs who want to learn more about how to get started using WebWork in their classes. The morning session covers class management (rosters, checking grades, granting extensions, etc.) in WeBWork, while the afternoon session builds on the morning and covers problem authoring and editing problems from the Open Problem Library (OPL). The OPL is a bank of over 30,000 community-contributed problems. Problems may be authored using Perl but programming expertise is not a requirement to edit problems.

About the WeBWorK pilot project at VT: Our goals are to provide an alternative assessment environment for faculty, remove homework access code fees for students, and to reduce the overall cost of textbooks and other course materials by enabling students to use older editions of textbooks and enabling faculty to adopt open educational resources or open textbooks.

The three-year pilot is funded by the University Libraries’ Open Education Initiative ( OEI ) and the  Undergraduate Academic Affairs . Math and Statistics faculty have been involved so far. In this second pilot year we are broadening the pilot to include additional disciplines.

About Open Homework Systems

Please note: This is an extremely incomplete list of homework solutions.

Homework software options which do not require authentication (e.g. are anonymous) are more freely available than those that pass student data back or integrate with an online gradebook. These options tend to focus on practice problems or self-testing rather than collection of data regarding individual students' performance.

Recorded presentations

  • Archived webinar: Open Math Platforms by OpenOregon Educational Resources (May 2018) Math instructors have unique needs, and there are two good open platforms available to meet those needs. WeBWorK and MyOpenMath enable instructors to automate practice problems that are accessible to a wide variety of learners. In this session, Alex Jordan, Portland Community College, will discuss the features of WeBWorK (example: https://webwork.pcc.edu/webwork2/orcca-demonstration/) and Carrie Kyser, Clackamas Community College, will discuss MyOpenMath (example: https://www.myopenmath.com/, username “guest,” no password). This session is for faculty who are ready to split up with their expensive copyrighted product but don’t want to lose functionality. Open Math Platforms Handout: https://tinyurl.com/mathplatforms

Selected open homework systems

  • MyOpenMath MyOpenMath is a free, open source, online course management system for mathematics and other quantitative fields. MyOpenMath's primary emphasis is to facilitate the creation and implementation of online homework and assessment, although it also supports content delivery on a limited basis. MyOpenMath runs on the open source IMathAS platform, providing free hosted use of this platform in support of free, open textbooks like the ones listed on OpenTextBookStore.com. The intent is to provide classroom use of the platform, without any required cost to students, for schools wanting a managed install of the IMathAS platform, and to provide students self-study opportunities. MyOpenMath.com is operated by the non-profit organization MyOpenMath.
  • WebWork WeBWorK is an open-source online homework system for math and sciences courses. WeBWorK was previously supported by the MAA and the NSF and comes with a Open Problem Library (OPL) [see below] of over 20,000 homework problems. Problems in the NPL target most lower division undergraduate math courses and some advanced courses. Supported courses include college algebra, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, single and multivariable calculus, differential equations, linear algebra and complex analysis.Virginia Tech currently hosts a WeBWorK through a paid agreement with Reclaim Hosting.
  • WeBWorK Open Problem Library (OPL) The WeBWorK Open Problem Library (OPL) contains problems contributed by faculty from many institutions that have used WeBWorK. Currently, there are approximately 35,000 problems in the OPL, and new problems are added regularly. The OPL was initially formed from several of the original File Based Problem Libraries, and includes all of the problems from the Arizona State, Rochester, California State-Long Beach, and the University of Virginia libraries. It also contains most, if not all, of the problems from Union College, the College of New Jersey, Dartmouth, Ohio State, Northern Arizona University, and Indiana University. Once known as the National Problem Library (NPL), the Open Problem Library (OPL) naming convention was adopted in the summer of 2012 to accommodate the increasing internationalization of WeBWorK and the possible inclusion of problem libraries from textbook publishers.
  • Sample problem environment on WeBWorK Use the Guest Login to see example problems for financial mathematics, general chemistry, linear algebra, multivariable calculus, physics, single variable calculus, and statics. The WeBWorK Pilot is a project of the University Libraries, Departments of Math and Statistics, and as of 5/2024 Virginia Tech's Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Top 5 platforms to set students’ homework online

' src=

In 2015, Ofsted stated in their published handbook they were looking to judge schools on whether ‘ pupils are set challenging goals, given their starting points, and are making good progress towards meeting or exceeding these’.

Essentially this means teachers need to be able to not only help their class progress, but keep documentation of it, so they can show how their students are improving.

Interactive learning has become a large part of modern teaching – particularly with the rise of Apps being used in our daily lives. But Apps are not only for home life, they can also be used to benefit your teaching environment. These are five of the current programmes available to help teachers set homework for their students and monitor their progress.

The Firefly programme is centred on saving teachers time – time that would usually be spent copying and pasting information into documents and looking through documents to find everyone’s submitted homework. Organisation is one of the basic objectives to the App, aimed at making tasks such as setting homework and giving feedback as simple and effective as possible.

Devices include:

  • Teachers choose whether to set paper or online homework
  • Students can submit from any device e.g. android, laptop, imac etc.
  • All documents are in one place rather than teachers having to search through their Inbox
  • Feedback is all stored under one archive including – annotations – comments – audio or visual comment
  • Homework can be shared with the parents online, as well as students to keep them in the loop

Firefly prides itself on developing its product based on the results of multiple case studies. These include both state and independent UK schools and international schools in Cairo and Bangkok.

2. eSchools

eSchools is an App for either primary or secondary schools, and differs between the two only when necessary. They focus on a variety of classroom features used in real time that can be translated to an App. No less than sixteen features and apps make up eSchools.

  • Teachers can easily create projects online with a variety of content types. These can re-used year by year
  • Homework can assigned to individuals groups or a whole class
  • Teachers can come up with Quizzes for homework or in the classroom, and can monitor how quickly students answered the questions

Primary schools have logins for the students as a set of images, whilst the secondary school App can be accessed by students via their school login.

Secondary school teachers can also adjust their App to keep up to date with the timetable changes.

3. Google Classroom

The best key word associated with Google I believe is convenience. Google Classroom is extremely convenient, whilst also making the point of being compatible with other Google Apps. Oh, and the best part… it’s free!

  • Teachers have control of setting up an online class. From there they can invite co-teachers and students. All relevant information can be shared in the online classroom including announcements, assignments and questions from students.
  • Work pages, class stream and the class calendar are platforms where the set work can appear.
  • Teachers can instantly send out homework, and create class discussions.
  • The App is compatible with all other Google programmes such as Gmail, Google Docs and Google Drive

Google prides itself on offering useful and  free services and as the App is for educational services, it contains no ads and does not collect or use student content or data.

Moodle has had a good success rate across the education spectrum, and primary schools to universities make use of it. Moodle allows the ‘Administrator’ – the user who is in charge of maintaining the site – to manage all aspects of their Moodle site, although some tasks can be given to a ‘Manager’.

Moodle acts as educational online platform where everything from homework, helpful documents, and grading platforms can be created.

  • Courses can be accessed by students once they have been authenticated by the Administrator
  • Every course has   grade book which can record scores of homework, quizzes, activities, and peer assessments
  • Tracking progress on Moodle allows teachers to keep track on when a course is completed – each activity comes with a checkbox that a student can tick upon completion. Once all boxes are ticked the Course marks itself as complete

Moodle is all about giving the teacher who creates the site – the Administrator – flexible control over the content and structure of their educational platform.

A useful tool is the ability to add or take away Restrictions, so that certain material on the site will be available to the student with the relevant ability.

Milk is a programme that focuses more than most on being a homework diary for teachers and students. Aspects are divided into four main sections: Homework, Dashboard, Messaging and Control.

  • Homework can be set instantly and is accessible to students via their phones computers or tablets
  • The Dashboard feature allows teachers to track progress attendance, as well as homework marks. This is especially useful for when teachers need to demonstrate class structure and progress
  • Relevant newsletter need not be sent by post. These can be sent from wherever the teacher is and they are able to confirm which students have read them
  • The programme imports student information from SIMS, creating an accurate account of the class to collect data from. This also means students can receive alerts when they have been set a new assignment

Milk puts emphasis on their Teacher Platform, where most of the features are available in one place. The Dashboard includes links to uploading worksheets and buttons for both the teacher and student to confirm work done.

Technology is advancing at such a pace that it is important the changes reflect in the classroom environment. Apps for setting homework cut down on paper wastage, and help keep each class’s workload in one accessible place for you the teacher.

Boston - May 23, 2024 —

Compare Before Buying, a leading source for comprehensive comparisons and reviews, has published an in-depth review highlighting Udemy as the best online learning service for 2024. The article explores the advantages of the platform, such as its wide breadth of courses, accessibility, affordability, and flexible learning options.

Top-Rated Online Learning Platform:

  • Udemy - click here and browse through Udemy’s extensive selection of courses taught by experts

Udemy is an online hub for both learning and teaching, offering a platform where instructors can craft and share courses spanning a vast array of subjects—from programming and entrepreneurship to photography and self-improvement. Through these courses, learners gain access to a variety of resources including video lectures, quizzes, assignments, and discussions, all tailored to foster engaging and interactive learning environments.

With an extensive library boasting over 213,000 courses, Udemy covers an expansive spectrum of topics and skill levels, catering to learners worldwide. Its flexible nature allows students to learn at their own pace, accommodating their diverse schedules and commitments.

Compare Before Buying recommends Udemy for its wide range of courses, affordability, flexibility with self-paced learning, and the option for lifetime access to course materials.

Udemy Online Courses Reviewed

As mentioned earlier, Udemy offers numerous online courses across multiple categories, such as Python, Excel, Web Development, JavaScript, Data Science, Amazon AWS and Drawing.

Among the courses highlighted in the review is The Complete Python Bootcamp From Zero to Hero in Python. It entails more than 100 lectures and over 21 hours’ worth of video content, covering real-world applications of Python such as web scraping and image processing.

Then there’s The Complete 2024 Web Development Bootcamp, which is a highly rated course in the Web Development category. It includes dozens of hours of video tutorials and interactive coding exercises and covers frontend and backend development, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Also, the review puts a spotlight on Python for Data Science and Machine Learning Bootcamp. This course aims to teach students how to use Python for data science and machine learning applications, including data visualization with Matplotlib and Pandas for data analysis.

Last but not least is Microsoft Excel – Excel from Beginner to Advanced. It includes step-by-step video tutorials and downloadable exercise files, allowing students to pace themselves and put what they learn to the test. Plus, there’s a Q&A board available so that students can interact not only with the instructor but with one another as well.

Efficacy of Online Learning Platforms

Online learning platforms such as Udemy can be highly effective for certain individuals, but their effectiveness can vary depending on factors such as the learner's preferences, the quality of the platform and its content, and the support available.

For some, online learning offers flexibility and convenience, allowing them to access materials and participate in courses from anywhere with an internet connection. This can be especially beneficial for those with busy schedules or other commitments.

Also, online platforms often provide a wide range of resources such as video lectures, interactive exercises, and discussion forums, which can cater to different learning styles and preferences.

However, online learning also presents challenges. For instance, technical issues or limited access to a reliable internet connection may hinder the learning experience.

Doing homework can be challenging, especially when faced with tricky questions. Many students turn to platforms like Chegg and Course Hero for homework help and to access expert explanations. However, these services often charge for their offerings and blur answers for non-paying users. That’s where Homeworkify comes in.

What is Homeworkify?

Homeworkify is a website that provides help and answers for homework questions across various academic subjects. One of its key features is giving students access to Chegg and Course Hero answers for free, without requiring them to purchase expensive subscriptions. This allows students to get expert explanations to their homework problems at no cost. By leveraging Homeworkify, students can save money while still benefiting from the content available on Chegg and Course Hero.

Key Features of Homeworkify

  • Step-by-step guided solutions: Homeworkify offers detailed explanations that walk students through the problem-solving process.
  • Wide range of subjects covered: From math and sciences to history, Homeworkify provides answers across various academic disciplines.
  • Access to restricted content: Homeworkify allows users to access certain restricted content from sources like Chegg, StudyBlue, Course Hero, and other platforms that may not be accessible normally.

  • Coverage of professional exams: GRE, IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, and more.
  • Subjects covered: Accounting, Finance, Computer Science, Economics, Operations Management, Biology, Geography, History, Maths, Physics, Science, and more.

How to Use Homeworkify to Unblur Chegg Answers

  • Copy the URL of the Chegg question from your web browser.
  • Go to the Homeworkify website in a new tab or window.
  • Look for the search bar on Homeworkify’s page.
  • Paste the copied Chegg question URL into Homeworkify’s search bar.

And that’s it! You’ll get unblurred Chegg answers without having to pay for a subscription.
