Like the average teenager, who seeks the perfect person to look up to, I longed to have someone in my life inspire me so that I may do what pleases myself as well as my loved ones. A role model is a person who someone admires and whose behaviour they try to copy. From all the people I could choose to be my role model, I always thought that my sister would fit best. I used to think that my goals should be set to accomplish past her’s. As the youngest in my immediate family, I spent most of my life with my sister, so it was never a doubt that I shouldn’t be like her.

Over three years ago, my family moved to the United States. Not long before we moved did my sister and I have different friend groups; for a while, we didn’t see each other eye-to-eye. When we moved here, I knew that this was the perfect chance for us to reconnect. We both took time to rebuild the relationship we used to have. I was a freshman and she was a sophomore when we started school here. We had similar classes and we did some of our homework together but we never did anything more than that. As my junior year began, my sister started applying to colleges and I saw myself planning to live my best life after she moved to college. One night she asked me to analyze one of her essays for her English class. Little did I know that this was a college essay that she poured her heart out to. In her essay, she had discussed how ‘family’ has shaped and influenced her: “Our relationship signifies a greater meaning of unity, obedience, and respect because we collaborate effectively, and live tranquilly. Sometimes family relationships are hard to maintain. There might be family disputes but in the end, we always love each other.” It took me a while to see that this was about us. It is through her essay that I finally got to connect with her and have the same relationship that we used to have. I held on to this since the moment she left for college.

As a sixteen-year-old who has lived in three countries and has been to sixteen countries, I am truly lucky to say that my actions and decisions have been influenced by many opportunities and challenges. Sometime during my junior year, I realized that I am capable of creating a future that I would like rather than follow my sister’s path, step-by-step. I received the chance to apply to a program for students planning to pursue a career in the medical field. Once I applied and was accepted, I was sure I wanted to proceed along my path and not my sister’s. The Practicum in Health Science program that I am in right now, has made me open up my eyes to all the new possibilities that are waiting for me in this life. Success here requires dedication and open-mindedness, and I feel better prepared for college and for what comes after.

My sister isn't the greatest, the funniest or even the most perfect in all the world, but she sure is all of that to me. My sister is someone I can trust, someone I can relate to and laugh with. She's my role model, my friend and, in my eyes, the best sister anyone could ever have. I don't think anyone can understand just how great my relationship with my sister is and sometimes, I don't even think she does. We don't bicker or fight like most siblings do or get on each other’s nerves so much that we'll stop talking to each other for days. We love each other with only a love that a sister can give and an understanding so great that no words can describe it. Of course I'm not saying that our relationship is perfect. Far from it in fact, but what I am saying, is that it is quite different than the way most relationships are carried out. We interact with each other differently than most people do in certain situations. When we fight, there is no physical contact or abusive language, only the occasional sharp word or glare. We aren't lovey, touchy like some siblings either. We give each other space but at the same time stick to each other like glue. We were brought up in a household where physical contact was punished, which we learned at quite a young age, so the only way that we learned how to fight was silently. We don't hit, push, or jab, we silently fume under vicious glares and say 'please stop doing that' or simply just 'stop'. When my sister gets mad at me she has this certain tone of voice and certain mannerisms that I know to stay away from. I've learned to look for a certain tone of voice in all of my family members, but I know my sister's the best. It's not threatening or insulting just stern. She also gets very quiet and almost rigid when she's mad with no spring in her step when she walks. All of this I know, because I've watched her and also because I am the same way. Now the point that I am getting to is that I understand my sister a lot. I know when she's mad, so I know how and when to stay away from her. I don't talk to her, unless I am asking a question, I try to give her as much space as possible and I try, under every possible circumstance, to not make her angrier. I believe that because I do this, she understands and does the same for me. When I am mad and don't want to talk to anyone she stays out of my way, respecting my space. Because of this, I am grateful for my sister and it makes me love her even more. Of course on the rare occasions that we do fight, one of two things happens: either we leave each other alone or we try to break the tension in some way. Our fights, which as strange as it sounds, are another reason why I love my sister so much. When our fights are over, our use of snappy remarks exhausted, and we have established the fact that, usually I, have done something in the wrong, we usually stay seated and wait for time to resolve our problems. This usually works out pretty well with us not really forgiving each other, but staying out of each other's hair for the time being. But this is not the reason why I love my sister so much. The reason lies in what she doesn't do, not what she does. She doesn't say 'I told you so' or force me to say I'm sorry. She doesn't nag, hackle, or pressure me in any way, just leaves me alone. Sometimes after a fight she'll even break the tension by saying something funny or asking my opinion. As by nature I am a stubborn person and don't like to say 'I'm sorry' or 'I forgive you' when I am in the wrong. It hurts my pride and it makes me even he more angrier saying it, so usually I just clam up and don't say anything at all. But my sister, my role model, my best friend, has taught me to say 'I love you' to my family when I mean it and to lift people's spirits by saying jokes, sarcastic remarks, or simply laughing at myself. And she is, till this day, still teaching me. My sister's attitude is something that I adore. She is kind hearted, even if she does hates animals, she is sweet and courteous to everyone she meets, she always says please and thank you, even to the bus driver, and she is always there to lend a helping hand. Her attitude and spirit is always something that I have admired and always something that I have sought to achieve myself. It's not as if I envy her or anything, I am far beyond that. I look upon my sister with something so indescribable and powerful, something so pure and sweet, that my heart bursts with happiness and pride. Every time my sister gets recognized for an accomplishment or award that she won, my heart skips a beat and my legs become so restless that I could jump for joy. I want to shout to the crowd 'That's my sister! The best in the world!' Another thing that my sister has taught me is to not be jealous and covet someone else's treasure. Now, my sister is a great artist, one of the best in my eyes, and I am not just saying that because she is my sister, I am saying that because she really is. All of her life she has been a phenomenal artist, always drawing and sketching. She draws people the best, but I believe everything she draws is on the same level of her artistic ability. She's won numerous prizes and awards for her drawings and has even gotten multiple scholarships presented to her from prestigious art schools. For this I am enormously excited and happy for her. Of course, I am also a bit of an artist myself, but not nearly as good as her. When I was little, I strived to be more like her, to draw the same way, and eventually get at the same level where she was, maybe even surpass her. I was always jealous of her skill and wanted it for myself, jealous of the attention and praise it brought her. But over the years she has taught me that I am never going to be like her. I am never going to be the same as her, or the best and I just came to accept that. She helped me to stop envying her drawing style, how beautiful and precise it was. How every picture she drew looked like it was done by a professional’s hand. I came to realize that I had to develop my own style, my way of drawing. I had to stop trying to copy hers and focus on developing my own. And so I have. She had taught me so much including putting my jealousy aside and focusing on being happy for the opportunities that she has, and will, be given. She has taught me so much in my lifetime and for that I am eternally grateful. My sister is the best. The sweetest, kindest, most generous person that you will ever meet. She always has a smile on her face and is always willing to give. I don't know how I ever would have lived without my hero in my life. There aren’t enough words or time in this world to describe the love I have for her. She's my best friend and the one person that I can be my crazy self around. My sister's my role model, my hero. I love her with all my aching heart, forever and always.

Descriptive Essay: My Role Models

Many people look to someone to serve as a model or motivator for their life. They want someone to look up to, who has good values and a sense of honor and integrity. Most people choose one person to act as their ‘guiding light’ for their life, but I am slightly different. I have chosen several. No one is perfect, after all, so I have a few people whose traits or deeds I admire. I think of them often and hope to live my life in a similar way.

My first role model has been with me since I saw his bronzed shoes in a museum when I was five. The shoes belong to Terry Fox. He’s a hero to an entire nation because he raced across Canada with one artificial leg in order to raise money for cancer research. He endured horrible weather, illness, physical pain, and other extreme hardships in order to meet his goal. I admire him for what he attempted, even though he did not succeed. Terry Fox had wanted to race across Canada, but did not make it more than a third of the way. He’s famous now, but was unknown at the time, so what he did was mostly in anonymity. But he never gave up. He had a goal and he worked toward it, no matter the end result.

My second role model is my best friend Rachel. I chose her because she is close to me. She is someone I can connect with on a daily basis, and watch as she muddles through life’s daily tribulations with as much honor and respect as she can muster. Has she undergone incredible hardships in her life? No. Not really. But she lives through the politics of every day adult life trying to be honest with herself and with others, avoiding gossip and being generous with people. Every time she buys me dinner, or spends time with my young niece, I’m reminded that people can be generous and caring.

The last person I look to as a role model is myself. I find that I do not always have to look outside myself for motivation and positivity. I have endured hardships in my life. I’ve lost family members to illness and stood up to defend myself from abuse. I live with an anxiety disorder and have to continually remind myself about various calming techniques. But I still stay positive and do my best every day. I can look back at things I’ve accomplished in my life and be proud. I can look at what I’ve overcome and realize that I am strong.

Role models are important. Life can be hard, with money woes and illness dragging us down. People need tangible reminders of the fact that strength and honor can triumph in rough circumstance. They need to be aware that every day people can be generous and caring. And people need to know that they, themselves, are brave and strong.

While she keeps asking several questions.  

Conclusion: I think Neha has a really good brain and she is going to be one of the brightest students. I really love her so much. She is the cutest little girl I have ever seen in my entire life.

Her Special Skill: She has really amazing singing skills. She started singing in her school days. When my father realizes that she is an amazing singing vocal, he calls a teacher for her. She is still learning music from then. I think she is going to be the next big singer because he has that potential for her.

In a few local programs, she performed very well and got lots of appreciation. Last year, she participated in a musical competition in Mumbai, she became third and got the opportunity to sing for a record company. This is a very big milestone in her life. I always wish her the best for an amazing singing career.  

Her Kindness and Other Virtues: One of the most important virtues that he has got is kindness. She is always kind for the poor and helpless people. In last winter vacation , we went to spend time with our uncle, aunt, and cousins. She bought lots of blanket for the poor villagers in that winter .

The most important thing is she has no negativity. She is super positive every time. I love her laughing face, she never gets worried anytime. And that thing gives me so much motivation and inspiration. I forget the pain and all the problems in my life when I spend time with her.

Another reason is her amazing studying skills. She is a very good student. I want to be a good student like her and want to perform well in every stage of my life.  

Helpful Mentality: His most important and attractive character part is a helpful mentality. She is really helpful. We always say charity begins at home. She started helping my mother in the kitchen and that’s how she started. She always works hard even after her so much study pressure. Sometimes she cooks food and washes clothes.

My parents are really happy with her helpful mentality. Not only in the family, but she is also helpful in the college too. I found a few girls came to our house for free tuition. She even helps them with her own notes.

10.1 Thinking Critically about Information

We live in an information-inundated world. Making sense of facts, opinions, assertions, claims, and appeals has become such a challenge that educators from preschool through higher education now recognize the importance of teaching critical thinking skills. You are especially responsible for applying critical thinking to the information you may use in messages. There are many formulas for critical thinking, but the underlying skill is the ability to ask intelligent questions that help you decide which information to accept on behalf of your audience.

The information strategy you apply as a mass communication professional will usually result in generating far more information than you could ever use in any particular message. Your powers of critical thinking and careful scrutiny are crucial at every step in the process.

Evaluating information requires:

• Careful, detailed analysis
• An eye for discrepancies
• Attention to accuracy

Communicators ask themselves a set of questions:

• What should be verified?
• What needs to be reinvestigated?
• What is the element of risk involved in using the information?
• What are the consequences of putting this information into the public arena?

By asking yourself these kinds of questions, you begin to develop patterns of verification and pathways for tracing information. You need to develop alternative interpretations of facts in order to protect yourself against being taken in or to avoid spreading mis-information.

This evaluation process also helps communicators create fresh and effective messages. News professionals want to figure out other possible meanings of information, to avoid the “handout syndrome.” For example, a journalist receiving a news release about the amazing new features of some just launched product will check with independent experts in the field to get their take on the claims. Advertising professionals want to be creative and original in their selection and use of information for their attention-grabbing messages. Public relations professionals want to select the “best light” material so they and their clients can be sure to target messages properly and in ways that will have the intended effect.

When evaluating the information found via the Internet there are some foundational ideas that need to be remembered.

• The Internet did not invent misinformation or disinformation
• The Internet did not create rumor mongering and propaganda
• The Internet is not responsible for dirty data and stupid statistics

All of these have been around forever. The Internet is just a new distribution outlet. The Internet does make it possible for misinformation, disinformation, rumor mongering, dirty data and stupid statistics to be distributed more quickly and widely than in the past. It is incumbent on you, as the communicator, to develop ways to detect and avoid these information traps.

If you ask anyone who their role model is, the typical answers you would receive would be mom, dad, or celebrity. If you were to ask me, I would say my brother, and there are plenty of reasons why. I'm not going to sit here to tell you that our relationship has been magically perfect for our entire lives because, let's be real, we're siblings and that’s probably impossible. However, I will explain to you why my brother is amazing and how he has earned the honorary title of ‘Role Model’.

I will start out by saying that my brother and I are almost five years apart, so growing up in our teenage/pre-teen years, we didn’t have a lot in common. However, I do remember that when we were younger, we spent quite a lot of time together. I don’t know for sure if it was because our parents forced him to let me tag along or maybe it was just because he secretly didn’t mind his sister as much as he pretended to; I would like to think that it’s the second option, to be honest. But because I was with him a lot, I developed a strong attachment to him and wanted to be just like him. He and his friends would collect Pokémon cards and battle each other, therefore I would also collect the cards but I was too young to really understand the rules of the game so I sat and observed. He wanted to go exploring so I dutifully followed, and most of the time we would go to this pond and try to catch tadpoles and other creatures. My brother is even the reason that I got into sketching, though he is still so much better at it than I am. I will even go as far to hesitantly admit that I wanted to dress similarly to him whenever possible.

I'm not sure the exact moment when we started to drift apart, but if I had to guess it was probably when he was starting high school. As I stated earlier, that’s when we started to have different interests and he really didn’t want his little sister following him around. At the time, I didn’t mind too much because I had my own friends, I was starting to figure out who I was as an individual and I would still see him in the evenings; though he was holed up in his room most of the time. It was also during high school that my brother was trying to figure out who he was. I think he already knew, to be honest, but let's just say, it wasn’t what you would typically see in conservative Oklahoma. No worries, he didn’t care what was ‘normal’ he just wanted to be able to express himself as a person and his passions. He got the tattoos that he’s always wanted, he experiments with his hair, as in has had dreads at some point, and he rocked it because he’s a bad ass and can do what he wants, he is also one of the most laid back, funniest and caring person I know.

I can go on and on about how awesome I think my brother is because he does what makes him happy but that’s only half of what makes him a role model. Like most families, we had a series of bumps in our lives, which was quite hard for all of us naturally but it was especially difficult because I wasn’t able to see my brother very often for a while. Despite all that’s happened in the past few years, I proudly tell others that he graduated from college, has a steady career doing something that he absolutely loves and he is happy.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life.You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.
