Music Business at Penn holds first concert, aims to expand music industry opportunities for students
Music Business at Penn, a newly established club, recently held its first concert and plans to expand its opportunities for students to learn about the business aspects of the music industry.
Wharton sophomores Levi Gans and Paco Prio said that they founded the club to provide students with the chance to explore music as a professional career. Speaker events and concerts allow students to gain real-world experience in the music industry and connect with prominent firms, such as Universal Music Group.
Both founders said that they have harbored a deep passion for music from a young age.
“I grew up in a rock band in Miami and played with them for eight years,” Gans said. “Paco grew up in cinematography, managing local artists in Miami, and playing DJ sets across Miami clubs. So, when we first got to Penn, we applied for all these Wharton clubs and networked like everyone else, but we both always felt something was missing.”

Gans and Prio's shared passion for music, combined with aspirations in business, motivated them to create Music Business at Penn.
“Given that I wanted to be an entrepreneur, I wanted to study business, but I also knew I wanted to study music,” Gans said. “When applying to Wharton, I wrote my essay about starting a music business club and wanted to make that happen as soon as I got to campus.”
To kickstart the club, the pair sought advice from various sources, including the president of the University of Michigan’s Music Business Club, to gather insights on club establishment. After introducing the club and its committees — production, marketing, creative, events, and internal — through social media outreach, the club received approximately 100 applicants, from which Gans and Prio selected about 30 individuals.
“One thing Penn clubs always have in common is that they always bring value to the club members,” Prio said. “We always ask ourselves fundamentally how we can create value for our members, which is our main goal.”
In addition to hosting various speaker events, the club recently organized its inaugural concert , Soundscape, on April 17. The concert featured four artists, including the Penn band Denis Coleman and Blueshade. After dedicating the entire week to preparations, the club said that it sold several hundred tickets to the concert and now aims to expand the scope of its next events.

“We’re planning on bringing Music Business at Penn to colleges around the Northeast,” Gans said. “We’re already planning an event for NSO next year with a couple of live bands, all in hopes of bringing more live music to Penn.”
With such initiatives in progress, the founders believe that the impact of the club will only continue to grow.
“Now that we’ve seen our efforts pay off, we’re excited for the next steps that Music Business at Penn will take,” Prio said.

Just how close are MIT and other universities to Israel? Protesting students want schools to cut research ties.
Two years ago, the president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ended a research partnership in Russia after the country’s invasion of Ukraine, he said, provoked “terrible consequences” for civilians.
Now MIT students who are protesting Israel’s war in Gaza are demanding that MIT respond similarly by severing ties with Israel itself and companies that are advancing its military efforts in Gaza as the death toll grows and the humanitarian crisis deepens. Protesters on other campuses are voicing similar demands.
MIT students have made some specific allegations, including that the school receives money from the Israeli Ministry of Defense for research, and have urged the university to be more transparent about its Israeli ties. A spokesperson for MIT, Kimberly Allen, declined to provide specifics, saying that the school’s faculty and researchers work with scientists and entities across the globe, including in Israel.
Publicly available documents provide some clues: MIT reported receiving $2.8 million in grants, gifts, and contracts from Israeli entities between 2020 and 2024, according to data from the US Department of Education. The department does not specify whether the funds come from individual, academic, or public sources, or how they are spent.
“MIT strongly supports the principles of academic freedom that enable our faculty to engage with a wide array of partners in the pursuit of knowledge,” Allen said. “Sponsored research projects on campus involve work that is open and publishable and that contributes to knowledge that is freely available to scientists worldwide.”
There are differences between the Russian invasion and the Israeli campaign. Russia invaded Ukraine unprovoked; Israel is waging a war against Hamas after the militant group-led an attack on Israel last year that killed about 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, while another 250 were taken hostage.
Student protestors at MIT and other campuses who set up encampments in recent days, and are refusing to move until their demands are met, are focused on the toll of the Israel-Hamas war rather than its cause. The Israeli campaign has killed more than 30,000 Gazans, according to the local Ministry of Health, reduced entire neighborhoods to rubble, and displaced the vast majority of the territory’s residents.
When MIT took a position on the Russian invasion, there was little pushback. Russia, unlike Israel, is a US adversary. And the conflict did not create intense divisions on campus, where today some Jewish students allege the pro-Palestinian movement contains antisemitism within its ranks, and some pro-Palestinian students allege discrimination and suppression of their speech.
“Ending our connection to this academic community comes with considerable sadness, but the actions of the Russian government made our choice clear,” former MIT President L. Rafael Reif wrote in a news release days after Russia’s invasion began.
MIT’s project in Russia, aimed at creating a tech hub and graduate university on the outskirts of Moscow, is not the only time MIT has reconsidered some of its foreign research relationships. The Cambridge institute reassessed its ties to Saudi Arabia after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist killed by Saudi operatives in 2018. After an internal review, however, the university determined that professors should be able to continue research projects with students, researchers, and sponsors in Saudi Arabia.
MIT reported it received more than $20 million in grants, contracts, and gifts from sources in Saudi Arabia between 2020 and 2024, according to the Department of Education.
Nancy Kanwisher, a professor of neuroscience at MIT, said she was not surprised to hear that some research at the school is funded by Israeli sources. She said there should be an open, public discussion among faculty members, staff, and students about support for research.
“There are lots of questionable sources of funding on campus,” Kanwisher said.
The school’s graduate student union and undergraduate student association recently passed referendums calling on MIT to end research ties to Israel. Students hope the protest encampments will motivate administrators to stop accepting research dollars from Israeli sources, said Safiyyah Ogundipe, a senior at MIT studying chemical engineering.
“MIT does have the ability if it wants to cut these ties,” Ogundipe said.
In response to the referendum, which passed earlier this semester with 64 percent of the votes, chancellor Melissa Nobles wrote to the school community that MIT “relies on rigorous processes to ensure that all funded research complies with MIT policies and US law.”
“Within those standards, MIT faculty have the fundamental academic freedom to pursue funding for research of interest in their fields,” Nobles said. She added that undergraduate resolutions do not have binding power and “should not be construed by anyone as representing the MIT administration.”
Daniel Shen, a PhD candidate in electrical engineering and computer science who helped write the referendum for the graduate student union, said it is a “strong example of the collective democratic process our union is all about.”
Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, holds two degrees from MIT. Allen declined to comment on Netanyahu’s engagement with the university.
Some student protesters at MIT and elsewhere are also calling on institutions to divest their endowments from Israeli companies, efforts they say are inspired by boycotts used to help end apartheid in South Africa. Israeli officials have rejected comparisons to apartheid. Many Jewish leaders say the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, a decades-old campaign against Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians, is antisemitic because it villainizes and singles out the Jewish state.
Luis M. Viceira, a Harvard Business School professor, said divesting from Israeli companies does not make sense from an investment perspective, and would unfairly punish Israeli companies and individuals.
“It is completely legitimate to agree or to disagree with the policies of the current Israeli government . . . but a divesting program from Israel is akin to a hurtful slap on the face to the entire country, an established democracy, not just their government,” Viceira said.
Charles A. Skorina, managing partner of an executive search firm for investment professionals, said investment officers should not be swayed by student calls to divest.
“Most chief investment officers are agnostic, because they’re supposed to be,” Skorina said. “Their assignment is: Please make money for the school. Period.”
At MIT, student organizers said they are more focused on calling on administrators to end research ties with Israel, citing the university’s history as a federal contractor and work with the Department of Defense.
“Israel is enacting war crimes,” Ogundipe said. “What does it mean for MIT to continue to take their money?”

Lakers fade again in Game 3 loss to Denver, moving to brink of elimination

It’s a colossal climb the Lakers are on, trouble lurking at every step.
One bad dribble, and Denver runs the other direction, creating an open three. One missed assignment, and Aaron Gordon cuts baseline for a dunk. One whiffed box out and the Nuggets get a second, and sometimes, a third chance.
One missed shot, and the margins get tighter, the chances get smaller, the ending gets closer.
One more tough night and the season will be done.
NBA disagrees with LeBron James and Lakers, supports calls made late in Game 2 loss
The Lakers complained about foul calls during the team’s loss to the Nuggets, but the NBA two-minute report endorsed the calls made late in the contest.
April 23, 2024
Boos started to fill Crypto.com Arena by the fourth quarter of Game 3 on Thursday, this time coming after a mistake on a screen led to an open Denver dunk. Reality had set in — one that probably should’ve been realized sooner.
The fact that the Lakers have been close to beating the Nuggets in the last 11 games has been no consolation. In fact, it probably makes it worse.
The climb they face has been too steep, too slippery and, again, too hard for this team to conquer.
Denver, like it always seems to do, was always there to gleefully capitalize on every Lakers mistake, every execution error. The Nuggets’ 112-105 win , even more so than their previous wins of the series, felt like relatively light work, with the Lakers dispatched relatively early in the second half.
The Lakers now trail Denver 3-0 in the best-of-seven playoff series — no team in NBA history has ever come back from that deficit.
“Our focus and our [mentality] right now is just trying to get one. Trying to get a game and then go from there,” Anthony Davis said. “Try to get a game on Saturday, Game 4. And go from there. However many straight [we lost], we can’t focus on that. Our focus is trying to [get] better from tonight, learn from our mistakes and try to get a win on Saturday. We can’t do anything about it. It’s in the past.”
The past, though, keeps showing up and the Lakers are playing in ways like it’s absolutely mattered — the team trying to climb out of a hole that started to be dug last season when Denver began its now 11-game winning streak against them.
The Nuggets outscored the Lakers by 12 in the third quarter, the game logs looking like they could’ve been Xeroxed from any of the previous 11 meetings between the teams.
In the series, Denver has been 31 points better in the third quarter. They’ve outscored the Lakers by 20 total points in the series.
“Our third quarter’s been atrocious,” Austin Reaves said.
The second-half problems — Denver has outscored the Lakers by 42 after halftime — have been a weapon used to criticize coach Darvin Ham and the Lakers’ inability to find the right adjustments.
But there was no adjusting to be done Thursday other than an easy one to spot — play better.
1. Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon finger rolls his shot to score over Lakers forward LeBron James in the fourth quarter. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times) 2. Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell sits on the bench during the final moments of Game 3. 3. Lakers forward Taurean Prince, bottom, scrambles for a loose ball in front of (from left) Lakers forward Anthony Davis, Nuggets center Nikola Jokic and Lakers guard Austin Reaves. 4. Lakers teammates LeBron James, left, and Spencer Dinwiddie argue a call with a referee. 5. Lakers star LeBron James, left, looks over at Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic and a referee during the fourth quarter of Game 3 on Thursday at Crypto.com Arena.
“I think Denver’s just beating us, to be honest,” Reaves said. “You can talk about adjustments, you can talk about this and that, but at the end of the day, we got to go put our best foot forward in basketball games. You can talk about all the, everything else outside the talks of everything, but at the end of the day, you got to man up and go win games.”
Still, in addition to the late-game boos, some fans chanted “Fire Darvin Ham” as the Lakers stumbled in the fourth, the frustration extending beyond the benches into the stands.
Thursday wasn’t even Nikola Jokic ’s night to rip the heart out of the Lakers. Foul trouble zapped some of his aggressiveness (his “off” night yielded 24 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists). And the Lakers again defended Jamal Murray fairly well, holding him to 22 points on eight-of-21 shooting.
But the Lakers lost on every other margin, Gordon owning the glass and Michael Porter Jr. hitting big shot after big shot.
The Lakers, like they have throughout the series, won the first minutes by playing with more energy, more pace and more force. They scored the first eight points — three coming on consecutive dunks — to prove that Murray’s winning shot on a buzzer-beater Monday hadn’t done permanent damage.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis led the push — the Lakers’ stars looking unstoppable as they attacked the Nuggets’ interior defense.
But just like in their series opener, the Lakers’ outside shots kept missing.
Plaschke: Dagger! Lakers’ epic collapse vs. Nuggets could send them reeling into summer
The Lakers’ blown lead against the Nuggets in Game 2 raises questions as to whether LeBron James is capable of saving the Lakers this season or ever again.
Rui Hachimura’s corner three with 5:24 left in the first quarter was the only Lakers’ basket from three until Taurean Prince hit a corner three with eight minutes left in the game.
By then, the Lakers were down double figures and more than 33 minutes of game time had vanished.
D’Angelo Russell struggled again, going scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting in his 24 minutes.
Russell, who projected confidence after shooting six for 20 in Game 1, declined to speak to the media Thursday.
“It’s unfortunate, man,” Ham said. “He had some good looks that he just didn’t knock down. It’s as simple as that. Similar to Game 1. He was able to bounce back in Game 2 and I expect him to bounce back in Game 4.”
Davis and James combined for 59 points on 60.4% shooting. The rest of the team made only 38.3%, with that number dropping to 30% if you remove Reaves and his eight-for-17 game.
The Lakers, again, looked like a team cracking under Denver’s pressure, the rims tightening and the ball squirting loose more and more as the stakes grew higher.
“This is the postseason. We’ve been — me and this guy have been playing together for six years. We’ve been to the mountaintop,” James said as he sat next to Davis after the game. “We’ve been close to the mountaintop. We’ve played a lot of games. We know what it takes to win. We know what it takes to win a championship and how damn-near perfect you gotta be. That’s not like something that’s so crazy to obtain. I’ve been a part of it four times where you have to have the most perfect basketball to win.”
This team hasn’t gotten close enough to perfect for the Lakers to look like a group relying more on hope than anything else.
Too many things that “can’t happen” against the Nuggets continued to happen against the Nuggets, like Russell’s struggles.
Reaves missed layups, his legs heavy from chasing Murray. Hachimura, after getting in the action early, completely faded on offense as he tried to limit Gordon and Jokic.
And Russell, a key to the Lakers’ season, spent the final minutes on the bench as Ham searched for anything from someone else.
Again, there was nothing to be found, a climb so dizzying and so treacherous, the ending is all but assured.
All things Lakers, all the time.
