Love Failure Movie Review

Behind The Movie Love Failure: Hero Siddharth donning the new avatar of producer as director Balaji Mohan comes up with this new concept of Failure in Love. When giving opportunities to new directors to debut is a regular meal for this lover boy, let us see how far the pairing of Amala Paul and Siddharth helped in final turnout of this flick?

In the Movie Love Failure: Movie begins with break up between two beautiful love birds, Arun (Siddharth) and Parvati (Amala Paul) studying in an Engineering College. Then on Arun begins to narrate his entire Love Story from the day he begins his voyage of friendship with Parvati which metamorphosed into Love over a period of time. The pretty adventures with friends and the episodes between families getting them get together. While the break up brings us back to present with Parvati in preparations to go for the US of America and Sid trying to forget her, here comes two more stories of similar nature bringing some matured thoughts in the two.

One is about an insecure, uncertain, abstruse boy friend and the second is divorce story of Parvati’s parents Aravaind (Suresh) and Saro (Surekha Vani). What difference did these two contemporary tales bring in the Love Story of Arun and Parvati? At the same time, what happened to the other two stories formed the rest of climax.

Values of The Movie Love Failure: Though concept of the film is slightly different from scripting point of view, it is again a regular love story which talks about break ups and patch ups. Director Balaji Mohan’s strength is clearly seen in his casual method of story narration which brings some sort of innovativeness and relief. Dialogues and situational comedy is weaved as per the demand. Music by Thaman is pretty normal score inclusive of title song while background has got some feel. Cinematography by Nirav Shah is cool n breezy. Production values of Etaki and YNot arer satisfactory.

Performance wise Siddharth gives his best for character resembling the boy next door kind of portrayal. Although nothing highly differentiated from his earlier roles, this one is typical for his style. Amala Paul is better than Sid in skinning into Parvati. Her costumes are simply beauteous. Of the others, we remember Suresh and Surekha Vani balancing their roles well.

Out of the Movie Love Failure: The main draw back for the flick is its limited scope of appealing. Primarily this modern day rom-com is targeted at multiplex audiences while others have nothing to absorb. Entire first half is good on entertaining stuff. Second half suffered with too many hiccups as sub-stories were introduced with high dosage of melodrama continued till the happy and predictable ending. Nevertheless Balaji Mohan gave his best shot to induce some sort of energy into leads but his inexperience was decidedly visible.

Although there are quite a few good elements to cheer up, it’s the mistake from director in shaping up an unfinished product that lives the film to have its own fall. As ‘Love Failure’ is wrapped in just 50 days of time with shoestring budget, there is a chance of film getting into breakeven stages early on by the first weekend. Definitely, this will end up making no difference to Siddharth’s enervate run as an actor.

Love Failure

Critics Review

Love failure is refreshing.

Love Failure is essentially a multiplex film in that youth from urban areas will relate to it much more. Balaji Mohan makes a good debut. Siddharth, Nirav Shah and Sashikanth should be complimented for making a film like this out of a short film originally posted on the Internet by the director. (more)

Urbane rom-com

It is a simple story. Balaji Mohan has narrated it in a beautiful way by designing good characterizations, writing interesting screenplay and narrating it in a novel way. (more)

good time pass

This one is a refreshing film and how! Love Failure focuses on the entire concept of love and deals with the complexities and eccentricities of women in particular. It does appear to be biased but the real behaviour of women is beautifully portrayed with a great deal of freshness and that freshness is the narration. (more)

Something new only in terms of style and screenplay

Director Balaji Mohan has come up with a different storyline and an appealing presentation. However, the narrative style was not so swift at times eventually diluting the true essence of the romantic movie. (more)

It is about that age-old problem of egos in a relationship, misunderstandings between a boy and a girl, break ups, patch ups, taking light-veined potshots at the girlfriends and boyfriends who are inept in a relationship and so forth. (more)

The 15 Best Movies about Failed Love

best movies about failed love

There are many things that define us as human beings, but the world we live in cannot really be understood without remembering the fact that we are deeply emotional beings.

Our entire history has been constructed over two essential pillars: emotion and reason, expressed as art and science. There is a sort of dialectical contradiction in our nature, a fight between our feelings and our thoughts, that gives life its complexity and makes it utterly pleasurable and frightening.

We want to understand things, yet we cannot really understand ourselves without understanding our feelings; they are ever-changing, water-like, and what was true about them five years or five days ago might have completely changed by now. And out of all the emotions in the spectrum, love is the most potent and mysterious.

It might be our passage into great joys and may even give us a glimpse of heaven or make us drown in an ocean of grief and despair. For this list, I’ve picked 15 movies that narrate stories where love doesn’t go well, where the characters are faced with unbearable emotions brought on by heartbreak, and where love expands so much that life itself seems small next to it.

1. The Lobster (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2015)

The Lobster

“The Lobster”, a splendid film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, might seem at first glance a quirky comedy that satirizes the idea of love. In reality, it is much deeper, questioning the possibility of love itself in the postmodern, neatly-organized world we’ve lived in for the past few decades, where everything is standardized, spontaneity is disparaged, and true understanding is frequently a difficult task.

The film emphasizes the way love has turned into a mechanical procedure instead of a passionate flow of feelings. Individuals don’t seek the fulfillment and sense of companionship that comes with a loving relationship.

In a selfish society, love turns selfish as well, so we start looking for ourselves in the other, and the search for a reflection of our distinctive characteristics becomes our prime motivator, perhaps founded on the idea that the “love of our lives” is no more than a variation or extension of our own selves.

The film incites us to reflect on the way we approach attraction and our sense of belonging, to forget about social rituals in order to feel deeply.

2. Anomalisa (Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, 2015)

Anomalisa

“Anomalisa”, written by Charlie Kaufman and co-directed with Duke Johnson, makes use of impeccable frame-by-frame animation, beautifully photographed to tell a story about one of the oldest preoccupations in human history: love. It analyzes it under different lights, from the existential marasmus and the longing for the past, provoked by a routinary and worn out relationship, to the first glimpses and gleams that announce the appearance of a new love.

The film portrays falling in and out of love as an incomprehensible phenomenon. Michael Stone suddenly falls in love with Lisa, a shy woman he met at his hotel due to her voice. While everybody else speaks with the same dull and generic voice, hers is different; it sets her apart from the rest, and Michael discovers in her an enormous beauty.

Yet after they spend a splendid night together, in a scene that resembles the killing passage from Camus’ “The Stranger”, he discovers under the shining light of the sun that leaks through the window that Lisa’s voice has suddenly turned as dull and uninteresting as the voices of everybody else. Love comes and goes, we suffer and enjoy a great deal, and it would be foolish to try to understand it.

3. Days of Being Wild (Wong Kar-Wai, 1990)

days of being wild 1

“Days of Being Wild” is Wong Kar-Wai’s second film, and it is a choral story that presents us with the trials and tribulations of a few teenagers who are caught in a tangle of love and heartbreak. Its stories lead to a hopeless conclusion, love is difficult, heartbreak is inevitable, and yet it is one of the most beautiful feelings we can experience.

This film is like a sad love song; its atmosphere is charged with some sort of fatality, of melancholy. From an adopted heartbreaker who had two girls fall in love with him and whom he constantly rejects, to a lonely cop who is a hopeless romantic, the film takes on the teenage years as the “Days of Being Wild”, when the future is uncertain, your heart is restless, and you are still looking for your place in the world.

4. Jules et Jim (François Truffaut, 1962)

jules et jim (1962)

“Jules et Jim” is one of the most outstanding films of the nouvelle-vague genre and one of the greatest masterpieces directed by François Truffaut.

It tells the story of Jules and Jim, two friends living in pre-World War I Paris of akin tastes, enjoyments and sensibilities, who happen to fall in love with Catherine, a woman who resembles a sculpture that fascinates them. Creating a new cinematic language, the film goes on to portray the way the relationship between the three members of the love triangle changes over the years.

At first, while they are young and energetic, they enjoy life together, they have fun and live a careless existence. Finally, Jules marries Catherine and then the war separates the friends. After it finishes, they reunite and Jim finds out that they are unhappily married. Jules is madly in love with her, but she is also attracted to Jim.

When the love triangle becomes even more intricate, complicated conflictive feelings arise. The film examines in depth a relationship that transcends the standard binary convention in order to accept variations, as well as different and unexpected ways to feel and relate to others.

5. Les Amours Imaginaires (Xavier Dolan, 2010)

Heartbeats

“Les Amours Imaginaires” is Xavier Dolan’s second film, and while it might seem a bit technically rough around the edges, it already shows his restless imagination and his out of the ordinary intuition.

It is a portrayal of a crossroad: Marie is a straight woman and Francis is a gay man, and they both are drawn into a love competition when they meet Nicolas, a young man whose features resemble those of Greek sculptures, the ideal of male beauty embodied in the figure of a blonde man.

The main story of the film is accompanied by testimonies of people who have suffered from heartache; their broken love stories serve to underline the difficulty of learning to cope with one’s feelings, and they foreshadow the result of most of our love enterprises. It is hard to make reality match our dreams and illusions.

6. Fallen Angels (Wong Kar-Wai, 1995)

fallen angels

Much like in “Days of Being Wild”, in “Fallen Angels” we take a glimpse into the lives of a few troubled lovers. Heartbreak is a common element in all of the stories; the dialectic between loving and being loved, leaving and being left, breaking a heart and having your heart broken.

Wong Kar-Wai always portrays his characters with a very lucid sensitivity; they are all emotionally profound and conflictive, they fall in love with all of their strength and pain, and despair drains them. They are humans, exercising their right to feel skin deep.

A professional killer breaks the heart of his partner (who he rarely sees) after he decides to leave the business, and a man that became mute after eating a lot of canned pineapple while heartbroken who now roams around closed shops at night to open them, are the main axes of the film. From humor to sordid eroticism, the film has a wide emotional range, exploring the emotional depths the heart can achieve under the right conditions.

7. La Vie d’Adèle (Abdellatif Kechiche, 2013)

Blue is the Warmest Color

The winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, “La Vie d’Adele” tells the story of Adele, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos, a young French woman who falls in love with an ethereal artist named Emma, played by Léa Seydoux.

We witness the appearance of desire in Adèle, and after a few heterosexual relationships she feels strongly drawn toward Emma, a mysterious and emancipated woman. They quickly establish a passionate romance, they get carried away, and an abrupt ending is due. Adèle goes through the grief of heartache once Emma decides she is no longer interesting to her, and it all ends in tears and a new beginning.

Love failure is a 2012 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy film, remark of Tamil movie Kadhilil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi , written and directed Balaji Mohan based on the same titled short film he made. The film stars Siddharth and Amala Paul.[3] It was released worldwide on 17 February 2012 to critical acclaim and was declared a hit.

The narrative unfolds through the lively recounting of Arun (Siddharth) and Parvathi (Amala Paul) as they share their love story during an interview, humorously marked by their bickering before its conclusion. The storyline takes a captivating turn, rewinding five months earlier to a college canteen where Arun and Parvathi’s paths intersect, sparking a friendship that evolves into a charming romantic relationship.

Parvathi grapples with familial challenges, particularly her parents’ strained marriage, with Saroja (Surekha Vani), her mother, contemplating divorce from her father, Akilan/Aravind (Suresh). As Arun and Parvathi navigate the complexities of their personal lives, the film adeptly explores how seemingly insignificant reasons contribute to the breakdown of relationships.

The couple’s disagreements escalate over time, and revelations surface when Arun introduces Parvathi to his parents. Arun’s father recognizes Parvathi as the daughter of a client undergoing divorce. The narrative delves into the intricate dynamics of relationships, unraveling the impact of misunderstandings and miscommunications on the couple’s journey.

Following their breakup, Arun’s friend Vignesh grapples with his own romantic challenges, leading to a trip to Pondicherry/Yanam that introduces Arun to John (Shyam) and his girlfriend Cathy (Pooja Ramachandran). This encounter sparks a friendly connection between Arun and Cathy, further exploring themes of love, friendship, and the complexities of human connections.

Simultaneously, Parvathi’s parents, Akilan/Aravind and Saroja, seek guidance from Prabhu (Ravi Raghavendra) regarding their impending divorce. The narrative skillfully weaves these storylines, culminating in a heartwarming resolution at Parvathi’s grandparents’ 80th marriage celebration.

As friendships evolve and misunderstandings are clarified, the characters undergo personal growth. The climax unfolds in the familiar college canteen where Arun and Parvathi first met, symbolizing a return to their roots. In a delightful twist, the couple reunites after a seemingly trivial quarrel, underscoring the film’s central message that small things can contribute to both breakups and makeups.

“Love Failure” stands as a charming romantic comedy that skillfully explores the intricacies of relationships with humor and heart. Balaji Mohan’s storytelling prowess, coupled with the charismatic performances of Siddharth and Amala Paul, ensures an enjoyable cinematic experience that resonated with audiences and critics alike.

Jeevi rating: 3.5/5 Punchline : urbane rom-com Genre: Romance Type: Straight Banner: Etaki Entertainment & YNot Studios

Cast : Siddharth, Amala Paul, Suresh, Surekha Vani etc

Music: SS Thaman Cinematography: Nirav Shah Editing: TS Suresh Lyrics: Srimani Witten n directed by: Balaji Mohan Exec producer: Chakravarthy Ramachandra Co-producer: Nirav Shah Producer: Shashikant & Siddharth Release date : 17 February 2012 Theater watched : Audi 1, PVR Cinemas, Hyderabad

Siddharth looks young and is apt for the role of college going Arun character. Siddharth’s work in this film is probably his best so far. The expressions are minute, yet perfect. Looks like his real life love failures must have taught him a lot and it all shows up in portrayal of this character. You can find fault with Siddharth in some of the scenes in films released post-Bommarillu. But his work (expressions, dialogue delivery and body language) in ‘Love Failure’ is impeccable. Director should also get the credit for such an authentic yet lovable characterization. Love Failure is a conversations-based film. Hence it’s extremely important for the narrator and male lead (both played Siddhath in this film) to get dialogues right. Siddharth does an outstanding job in dialogue delivery.

Amala Paul is a good actress and she has come up with nice work. Suresh gets a nice character after a long gap and he impresses. Surekha Vani is decent as wife of Suresh. 90% of the actors are new and all of them are natural with their work. The casting of new actors added loads of freshness to the movie.

It is a simple story. Balaji Mohan has narrated it in a beautiful way by designing good characterizations, writing interesting screenplay and narrating it in a novel way. You can see heavy influence of Woody Allen’s work (especially hero speaking to the camera and creative screenplay (like the scene in which heroine gives the flower - then hero goes into dream before heroine takes it back and keep it in the book)). Director is intelligent and creative. There is subtlety in his work. There are certain scenes in the film for which you smile after a couple of seconds (it takes time to get that humor understood). There is neither formula not familiar commercial elements in the film. Balaji sticks to the plot and delivers the goods. There are several interesting scenes in the movie. Here I am giving a couple of them

One of the main strengths of the film is writing. The dialogues are sharp and quirky. Lyrics are fun. Thaman comes up with refreshing songs and a soothing background music. Cinematography by Nirav Shah is of top notch quality. The colors are natural and you wouldn’t believe that it is shot with a digital camera. Editing is crisp. Production values complement the story.

: Love Failure is an urban romantic comedy told in a fresh an novel style. Siddharth has picked up the director by looking at a short film in youtube and asked him to make it a full-length feature film. I had seen that short film and the feature film is even better than the short film. Not even a single frame in this movie is compromised to please a section of audiences. The director has stuck to plot and to his narration style. The director has excellent understanding of how men and women think/react in contrastingly different ways for the same situation. On a whole, Love Failure is a well-made urban romantic comedy. Go and watch it!

: My sources tell me that this film is made in a very small budget because hero Siddharth and cinematographer Nirav Shav were not paid (to be shared from profits). The budget of the movie is recovered by satellite rights. The amount collected in theatrical run is the profit. A few Telugu filmmakers tried it in the past and failed, because they have concentrated more on economics and ignored the content. Love Failure is a fine example of economical film-making with good content.

Overall Impression Of The Movie:

Love Failure is the first production from Siddharth’s Etaki Entertainment and like any other Siddharth’s film, it comes with its own set of expectations which primarily revolve around light-hearted romance in an urbane setting. Given Siddharth’s tendency to work with debutante directors, he ropes in Balaji Mohan who makes his debut in this debut production!!!

What Is It About:

Scene 1 starts with Parvathi (Amala Paul) and Arun (Siddharth) breaking up in college without giving a clue on the reason behind the break-up and then scene 2 has Siddharth talking about his Love Failure which he intersperses with flashbacks from his own love story with Amala. This racy conversational narration of Siddharth shows their journey from being just friends to sharing something more meaningful while also slipping in little episodes about their friends and respective families which is what the first half is all about. The second half introduces in two more parallel stories about a divorce and an insecure boyfriend to contrast with the main love story and indirectly help the leads in understanding what went wrong with their relationship. Needless to say, all the three stories come to a happy ending without involving bloodshed or an overdose of tears.

What Is Good:

The strength of Love Failure is in its dialogues and it’s the conversational style of narration. The characters speak in your everyday language and the wry sarcastic humor in it is a welcome change from the slapstick comedy found in most mainstream movies. Entire scenes breeze past in this light manner which had most of the audience connecting with those situations in the first half. Siddharth delivers a believable performance again with his experience of having done many similar roles in the past. Amala Paul is another surprise as the girl next door and she makes it believable by acting as one. The supporting cast pitches in with spirited performances while the three catchy songs by Thamam flow smoothly into the narrative.

What Is Bad:

Love failure falters in the second half where it tries to get ambitious by introducing the sub-plots which dilute the main story and try to give deeper meaning to college romance. It’s highly unlikely that a college student would be influenced by situations involving grown-ups and their relationships that have survived many years. Also, the screenplay in the second half confuses at times by jumping between the past and present and the sub-plots which leave you wondering what happened last. The movie will have limited appeal as there are virtually no commercial elements in the movie.

Love Failure is directed at the college goers and multiplex audiences who also comprise the main audience for Siddharth’s films. The dialogues around the concept that men are from mars while women are from venus might appeal to them . Overall, Love Failure might click only with this limited audience since most of the “mainstream entertainment elements” are missing.

Balaji Mohan makes a guest appearance as one of the love failures towards the end!!!

Pixar's highly anticipated sequel "Inside Out 2" is all set to take over theatres this Friday, and the initial reactions on Twitter are overwhelmingly positive. Fans and critics alike have posted rave reviews of the film, praising its emotional depth, relatable themes, and standout performances—something many didn't think possible after the Oscar-winning 2015 film.

Kelly Clarkson passionately defended 'Avengers: Endgame' against critics on her Daytime Show, emphasizing the film's significance and popularity. She dismissed comparisons to 'Shawshank Redemption' and rebutted specific criticisms, including Martin Scorsese's theme park analogy and a scene involving Scarlett Johansson's character. Clarkson praised the movie's climactic moments and affirmed her love for it, giving low ratings to negative reviews.

'Manamey,' starring Sharwanand and Krithi Shetty, has hit the theaters today, directed by Sriram Adittya. The family drama, exploring the challenges of parenthood, has garnered positive reactions on social media. Viewers praised the heartwarming storyline, charming performances, and delightful comedy, making it a hit among family audiences. The film also stars Vikram Adittya as the toddler.

Priyanka Chopra showers praise on 'Laapataa Ladies' produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Kiran Rao. The actress asked the filmmaker to make more movies!

The highly anticipated 'Bad Boys' franchise's latest chapter, 'Ride or Die', starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, is receiving rave reviews and is expected to be a summer blockbuster with a $75 million global box office opening. The film that hit theatres on Thursday, has already been declared as the "BEST film in the franchise."

Sara Ali Khan discussed her struggle with self-criticism, revealing it took years to recover from setbacks following the underperformance of 'Love Aaj Kal' and 'Coolie No 1.' Despite media and fan support, she remained critical of her work. She found closure while promoting later projects and anticipates her upcoming film.

Alaya F discusses Bade Miyan Chote Miyan's terrible performance at the box office. She says a 'masala' film will not be praised by critics.

Netflix has its share of critically acclaimed movies and duds coming to the streaming service in July. Read on to find out which are the best and worst-reviewed movies in the new batch.

As usual, most of the movies new to the streaming service will premiere at the beginning of the month. As such, July 1 marks the debut of director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and director Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future trilogy, which were both well-received by critics and audiences.

On the contrary, there are two other new movies on Netflix in July that finish out an infamous movie trilogy that appeared to be doomed by the critical reception of the first film in the series.

Not included in this assessment are four Netflix original films that are making their debuts on the streaming service in July, including movie legend Eddie Murphy’s long-awaited return to the Beverly Hills Cop series with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F . None of the four new Netflix originals were reviewed by critics before the publication of this article.

Here are the five best-reviewed and five worst-reviewed movies coming to Netflix in July, based on critics’ ratings on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes . RT “fresh” or “rotten” rating ties are broken by RT Audience Scores.

The Best-Reviewed Movies Coming To Netflix

The FBI’s target is a group of corrupt politicians, including Camden, New Jersey, Mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner). American Hustle also stars Jennifer Lawrence as Irving’s wife, Rosalyn, who gets caught up in the sting operation.

RT critics gave American Hustle a 92 percent “fresh” rating based on 298 reviews, while more than 100,000 RT users collectively gave the movie a 74% “fresh” Audience Score.

American Hustle was nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Russell, as well as Best Actor and Actress nominations for Bale and Adams, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress nominations for Cooper and Lawrence.

American Hustle debuts on Netflix on July 1.

4. ‘Spider-Man 2’ (2004)

A rare sequel that’s just as revered as its original film, Spider-Man 2 finds Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) encountering a new nemesis, Dr. Otto Octavius/Doc Ock (Alfred Molina).

Kirsten Dunst returns as Peter’s crush, Mary Jane Watson, while James Franco reprises his role of Peter’s best friend, Harry Osborn, from the original Spider-Man in 2002.

3. ‘Captain Phillips’ (2013)

Barkhad Abdi also stars as Muse, who leads the band of Somali pirates who hijack Phillips’ ship.

RT critics gave Captain Phillips a 93% “fresh” rating based on 281 reviews. The RT Audience Score was 89% percent “fresh” based on 100,000-plus user ratings.

Captain Phillips was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture. Abdi also earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination in his first screen role.

Captain Phillips debuts on Netflix July 1

2. ‘Back to the Future’ (1985)

Back to the Future stars Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, a California teen in the 1980s who is accidentally transported back to the 1950s in his mentor Doc Brown’s (Christopher Lloyd) DeLorean car/time machine.

Because of his inadvertent blast into the past, Marty puts his future in jeopardy when he encounters his parents Lorraine and George (Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover). Thomas F. Wilson also stars in Back to the Future as George’s bully, Biff Tanen.

RT critics gave Back to the Future a 93% “fresh” rating based on 111 reviews, while the sci-fi adventure comedy earned a 95% “fresh” Audience Score based on 250,000-plus user ratings.

Back to the Future debuts on Netflix on July 1.

1. ‘Call Me by Your Name’ (2017)

Timothée Chalamet stars in Call Me by Your Name , which chronicles a love affair in Italy in 1983 between 17-year-old Elio (Chalamet) and his father’s research assistant, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old graduate student.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Call Me by Your Name earned four Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Chalamet. The film won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for screenwriter James Ivory.

RT gave Call Me By You Name a 94% “fresh” rating based on 364 reviews. RT users gave the film an 86% “fresh” Audience Score based on 10,000-plus user ratings.

Call Me by Your Name debuts on Netflix on July 1.

The Worst-Reviewed Movies Coming To Netflix

5. ‘bad boys ii’ (2003).

The first sequel to the 1995 hit Bad Boys , Bad Boys II reunites Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami police detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, who are trying to stop a Cuban drug cartel from smuggling ecstasy into their city.

Arriving on Netflix in time to capitalize on the theatrical success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die , the first two films in the four-chapter action series didn’t receive nearly the critical praise.

Bad Boys II has the worst Rotten Tomatoes score in the franchise, with a 24% “rotten” rating based on 186 reviews. Viewers reacted much differently, however, giving the film a 78% “fresh” RT Audience Score based on 250,000-plus user ratings.

Bad Boys II debuts on Netflix on July 8.

4. ‘Midnight Sun’ (2018)

Bella Thorne and Patrick Schwarzenegger star as Katie Price and Charlie Reed in Midnight Sun , a teen romance drama about how the couple copes with an illness that prevents Katie from being out in the sun.

RT critics gave Midnight Sun a 20% “rotten” rating, while viewers seemed a little more impressed. Still, the movie was deemed “rotten” with a 56% Audience Score based on 1,000-plus RT user ratings.

Midnight Sun debuts on Netflix on July 15.

3. ‘The Boy Next Door’ (2015)

Jennifer Lopez stars in The Boy Next Door , a crime thriller about how a dangerous situation develops after divorced school teacher Claire Peterson (Lopez) has a one-night stand with her 19-year-old former student, Noah Sandborn (Ryan Guzman).

After the one encounter, Claire tries to end the relationship but Noah becomes enraged.

RT critics gave The Boy Next Door a 12% “rotten” rating based on 139 reviews, while viewers gave the movie a 34% “rotten” Audience Score based on 25,000-plus RT user ratings.

The Boy Next Door debuts on Netflix on July 16.

2. ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ (2017)

Two years after critics trashed Fifty Shades of Grey , Fifty Shades Darker —the second book in author E.L. James’ erotic book trilogy—was released.

Dakota Johnson reprises her role of Anastasia Steele, who fell under the spell of billionaire businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan, back for round two) and his lurid world of BDSM in the first film. Fifty Shades Darker finds Christian trying to lure Anastasia back into his life after she left him at the conclusion of Fifty Shades of Grey .

RT critics gave 50 Shades Darker an 11% “rotten” rating based on 209 reviews. Viewers were more split on their reaction to the film, giving it a 48% “rotten” RT Audience Score based on 25,000-plus user ratings.

Fifty Shades Darker debuts on Netflix on July 16.

1. ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ (2018)

E.L. James’ Fifty Shades book-turned-movie trilogy concluded with Fifty Shades Freed .

Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) accepted Christian Grey’s (Jamie Dornan) marriage proposal at the end of Fifty Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed finds the two as newlyweds. Things get complicated when Anastasia reveals that she is pregnant, but her joy is tempered when she learns Christian is communicating with a former BDSM dominant.

Fifty Shades Freed —like Fifty Shades Darker —received an 11% percent “rotten” rating from RT critics, but this rating was based on 194 reviews. Fifty Shades Freed , however, earned the No. 1 spot as the worst movie new on Netflix in July because it earned a 38% “rotten” Audience Score based on 5,000-plus user ratings.

Fifty Shades Freed debuts on Netflix on July 16.

If viewers want to take in the entire Fifty Shades movie trilogy, Netflix added the first film—2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey —to its streaming platform in June .

Cowboy Bebop The Movie Review: A Monumental Achievement in Animation With One Catch

One piece confirms the survival of a character that could play a key role in the final war, gohan finally faces goku black in undeniably epic new fanart.

  • Spy x Family Movie Code: White emphasizes family bonds amidst thrilling action and comedy sequences.
  • Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro showcases impressive animation and thrilling heist adventures.
  • Cowboy Bebop: The Movie features intense action similar to what Loid and Yor go through in Code: White to save Anya on a burning airship.

Spy x Family has been a smash hit since its premiere in 2022. Twilight, the greatest spy in Westalis, is tasked with forming a fake family to infiltrate the neighboring country, Ostania. Under his new identity as Loid Forger, he winds up recruiting assassin Yor as his wife and telepath Anya as his daughter, with all three of them hiding their true identities from their new family.

Spy x Family Code: White is the franchise's first movie , and it sees the Forger family taking a vacation to the wintry region of Frigis , only to get caught up in a plot by the vicious Colonel Snidel to spark war between Westalis and Ostania. The movie spotlights many of the anime’s strongest points: goofy comedy, stellar action sequences, and heartfelt moments shared between the Forger family. And if fans are still hungry for more, there are plenty more anime films like it to try.

10 Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro Is a Game Between Criminals

Based on the 1971 anime lupin iii part 1, lupin the 3rd part 1 (1971).

In one of the best anime based on classic literature , the grandson of Arséne Lupin is the world’s greatest thief. His gang pulls off daring heists, dodging the efforts of police (particularly the determined Inspector Zenigata) to catch him. The spinoff film of the first TV series sees Lupin and company storming an evil count’s castle to rescue a princess and get back at him for tricking them with counterfeit money.

This 1979 movie is notable for much more than being the legendary Hayao Miyazaki’s directorial debut . Like Code: White, our heroes (made considerably more heroic from their manga incarnations thanks to Miyazaki’s influence) travel the world to reach their goals, getting caught up in the crimes of those much crueler than them. It is particularly highly praised for its impressive animation, a step up even from the original show.

9 Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Bumps Up the Show's Action

Based on the 1998 anime cowboy bebop, cowboy bebop: the movie.

As a super-spy and a brutal assassin, Loid and Yor are both much stronger than their mild-mannered civilian personas suggest. Code: White gives them both ample time to shine in the action department as they storm Snidel’s airship to rescue Anya. Loid takes on Snidel himself and Yor fights off his most monstrous lackey as the ship burns out of the sky around them.

Spike with a cigarette in profile.

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door goes unnoticed too often, even though it boasts some of the best action scenes ever put to screen.

Both a Halloween special and a feature film spinoff, this movie plunges the crew of the Bebop into their direst adventure yet. Spike and company must stop ex-soldier Vincent Volaju from releasing a virus that will kill everyone on Mars. As they fight to save the planet, their martial talents (Spike’s especially) are shown off in lovingly animated combat sequences, longer and more complex than even those from the original show.

8 Tokyo Godfathers Brings an Unconventional Family Together

Based on the novel "the three godfathers" by peter b. kyne.

By a considerable stretch, Code: White could be counted as one of the best Christmas specials in anime. As befits the movie’s name, Frigis is wintry and fun, and in addition to saving their countries from all-out war, the impromptu mission brings the Forgers closer as a family. Tokyo Godfathers brings an unlikely group together in much the same way.

One of Satoshi Kon’s best films and a fantastic Christmas anime movie overall, funnier and more grounded in realism than Kon's usual works, Tokyo Godfathers centers around Hana, Miyuki, and Gin, a trio of homeless Tokyoites who discover a baby girl abandoned on Christmas Eve. Naming her Kiyoko, they resolve to look after her and reunite her with her parents. Along their journey, they go through a series of absurd yet helpful coincidences and regain hope for their own lives.

7 The Boy and the Beast Stars an Adoptive Father and Son

Original film written by mamoru hosoda.

After the breakup of his family, angry and lonely nine-year-old Ren finds his way through a portal to the world of beasts. There, he's raised by Kumatetsu, a bear warrior outcast from his society as well. Kumatetsu might not be confident in his abilities, but he grows devoted to his adoptive son, training him as a martial artist and willing to risk his own life to protect him.

Many more of Mamoru Hosoda’s best films , from Summer Wars to Wolf Children, are about the bonds between family. For most of her short life, Anya Forger wasn’t cared for by anyone, and is constantly terrified of being rejected by her adoptive parents. However, as Loid and Yor prove throughout Code: White, they adore Anya and would do anything to protect her.

6 Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop Is a Charming Rom-Com

Original film written by kyohei ishiguro and dai sato.

True to its name, Spy x Family spends much more time on its family aspects than it does on any love story between Loid and Yor. However, while the pair’s marriage is fake, their care for one another is very real , even if their ideas of what is normal behavior are a bit skewed. Yor in particular is very anxious about not measuring up as Loid’s wife, leading to a misunderstanding in Code: White where she worries he’s cheating on her.

Communication is a key element of the romantic comedy film Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. Smile and Cherry love each other very much, but are severely shy and insecure, leading to them having trouble opening up and sharing their feelings directly. As they connect through their love of music, they fall deeper in love themselves, even as life challenges them. Ultimately, they grow brave enough to admit how they feel to one another.

5 Pokémon - Zoroark: Master of Illusions Centers Around Family

Based on the 2006 anime season pokémon the series: diamond and pearl.

As one of the longest-running anime of all time , Pokémon has quite a few spinoff movies. On their journey through the Unova region, Ash and company run into a baby Zorua whose caretaker, Zoroark, has been abducted by a CEO who’s using her in his plot to gain wealth and power. It’s up to the heroes to reunite the family and protect all the Pokémon of Unova.

In the reverse of Code: White, the story centers around a young child trying to rescue its adoptive parent from a particularly gruesome villain. Like Snidel, Grings Kodai is cold and sadistic, not only willing but happy to kill human and Pokémon alike if it gets him what he wants. Ash, Zorua and Zoroark, and even Celebi need to summon up every ounce of strength they have to stop him.

4 Flavors of Youth Uses Food to Represent Love

Original film directed by li haoling, jiaoshou yi xiaoxing, and yoshitaka takeuchi.

The Forgers make their way to Frigis in the first place to study a region-specific dish that could net Anya a win in her school’s cooking contest. While their pursuit of the dish falls to the wayside in favor of stopping Snidel, food and drink still drive the plot in several ways. In addition, they’re not only used to represent the villain’s cruel and exacting personality, but the Forgers’ devotion to one another.

Flavors of Youth is a film that centers entirely around the concept of necessities, such as food, representing the bonds between family and friends. In the food-centric segment, The Rice Noodles, Xiao Ming clings to the memory of enjoying noodles with his grandma as his neighborhood and life change drastically. While nowhere near as action-packed as Code: White, it has just as much heart, and it delights in the simple pleasures of life.

3 Castle In The Sky Is a Thrilling Adventure In The Clouds

Original film written by hayao miyazaki.

When young orphan Pazu saves another child, Sheeta, from the shady government agents trying to kidnap her, the two of them are caught up in a wild adventure. Sheeta is the key to raising the lost city of Laputa, and together the children must stop Muska, the city’s other survivor and a vicious killer, from reviving Laputa and using its powerful technology to destroy humanity.

One of the most underrated Studio Ghibli films , Castle in the Sky is not only the famous studio’s first feature film, but one that matches Code: White both for thrills and heartwarming moments. Like Loid and Yor, Dola and her gang of air pirates aren’t the most conventional people to rely on in a crisis, but they come through in big ways. And Sheeta, Pazu, and Anya could certainly swap stories about being targeted by military madmen and having to be clever about escaping.

2 Drifting Home Sends Its Young Heroes on a Wild Journey

Original film written by hiroyasu ishida, hayashi mori, and minaka sakamoto.

Though Anya, being only four, relies considerably on her parents to help and protect her, when push comes to shove she’s clever and resourceful in getting out of whatever bad situation she’s in. Ducking and dodging can’t work forever, but when they fail she falls back on trickery and surprisingly effective acting skills. Aboard Snidel’s airship, she’ll need all of them to make it back to her family.

The children of Drifting Home are a bit older, but are pushed into a similar position. In one of the best anime now streaming on Netflix, a group of classmates find themselves stranded in an apartment complex floating on a seemingly endless ocean. It’s not quite as directly life-threatening as the massive villainous airship Anya winds up trapped on, but forces the kids to develop vital survival skills very quickly to return home.

1 Naruto the Movie: Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom Employs Spies to Save the Royal Family

Based on the manga by masashi kishimoto, naruto (2002).

Naruto is an action-adventure anime series based on the manga series created by Masashi Kishimoto. The titular Naruto Uzumaki is a fearsome Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit sealed inside him, which once wreaked havoc on his village. Shunned by his community yet determined to earn their respect, Naruto dreams of becoming the greatest ninja, the Hokage. This series follows his journey through the Ninja Academy as he continues to train and grow, hoping to prove himself to his peers- and himself.

Naruto is one of the anime with the most spin-off movies to its name, and while Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow might be closest to Code: White ’s setting, Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom is the most similar in plot. Team 7 (with Rock Lee substituted for Sasuke) is charged with protecting the kingdom’s princes from a deadly coup d’etat.

Political intrigue and the lives of Ostania’s wealthy upper class are very important to Spy x Family, between Loid investigating government officials and Anya contending with her well-heeled classmates at school. Similar dynamics can be found in this movie: while Kakashi and the Land of the Moon’s warriors fight to protect the kingdom from being taken over, Naruto’s plot is much more individualized. He takes it upon himself to teach Hikaru, the spoiled younger prince, to grow up a bit, with Hikaru becoming stronger and more selfless thanks to his influence.

The Big Picture

  • Apple TV+'s enjoyable dramedy Land of Women follows New York socialite Gala on a life-changing trip to a Spanish wine town with her family.
  • The show features strong performances, particularly from Carmen Maura, highlighting the bond between three generations of women.
  • Despite a weak crime subplot, Land of Women offers breezy, feel-good escapism, with a well-developed dynamic between its leading trio.

With the beginning of summer comes a strong desire to go on vacation overseas and escape from the hardships of everyday life. When traveling isn't an option, a series like Apple TV+'s Land of Women does the trick, since it is centered on a "girls trip" to a picturesque small town in northern Spain, where miles of vineyards occupy both sides of the road. Although the reasoning behind the getaway is far from a simple wish to live an adventure in an unknown place, Gala's ( Eva Longoria ) last-minute plan to board a plane with her elderly mother Julia ( Carmen Maura ) and her teen daughter Kate ( Victoria Bazua ) makes for an unexpectedly life-changing ride. Although Apple TV+'s multicultural production, with cast and crew from both Spain and the US, has its faults, Land of Women is a breezy, feel-good show that viewers can resort to when traveling to Europe isn't feasible.

Land of Women

A New York socialite is forced to flee to a charming Spanish wine town with her mother and daughter. She finds herself navigating small-town quirks while also confronting her deepest family secrets—and a pair of bumbling hit men.

What Is 'Land of Women' About?

Based on a novel by Sandra Barned , the series starts with Gala, a New York socialite who is ecstatic about her bottle shop opening. In high spirits over finally getting to focus on something of her own, the protagonist feels her world turned upside down when two hit men appear at the inaugural event to warn her about her husband's billion-dollar debt. With her partner nowhere to be found and criminals threatening her and her family, Gala is forced to come up with a plan to flee the country with her loved ones overnight. The first destination that pops into her mind is La Muga, a small town in Catalonia, Spain, where Julia and her sister lived in their youth. Yet, when the three women arrive in the village, it becomes clear that their presence is unwelcome , given the bad reputation that Gala's mother had when she lived there and the fact that she hadn't kept in touch with her sibling for over 40 years.

'Land of Women' Might Be Eva Longoria's TV Comeback, but Carmen Maura Steals the Show

Carmen Maura with one hand on a cart filled with grapes, standing in the middle of a vineyard in 'Land of Women'.

After spending nearly a decade behind the camera as a producer and director, the Desperate Housewives alum once again embraces the role of a fashionista, who slowly learns that she doesn't need expensive clothing items at her grasp to be happy. Longoria's charming onscreen presence and her feisty Latina nature are on full display through her latest character, who was born in America but lived a long time in Mexico. Her fluency in Spanish allows her to alternate between languages and communicate with La Muga's locals, but it doesn't prevent her from being misjudged by the community of primarily women. After all, in their minds, she is the spitting image of Julia, who they regard as a rebel without a cause and who also had flings with most of the men in the village when she resided there. Her departure from the town was more of a blessing than a curse, so Gala being related to her prevents the protagonist from making meaningful connections right away. She must instead conquer the women's trust, as well as the affection of Amat ( Santiago Cabrera ), the current owner of Julia's childhood home.

Although Longoria plays the main character, the consecrated Carmen Maura who draws the viewer into the plot. Pedro Almodóvar 's frequent collaborator brings nuance to Julia, who is now no longer the problematic teen who used to go skinny-dipping in the lake and would constantly get into fights with her neighbors. She is now plagued by memory lapses, so much so that she doesn't even know which of the men in her past is Gala's biological father. Catapulted back to the place where she was raised, Julia must make amends and find the answers she seeks before she is no longer able to remember who she is. Maura shines as Julia, embracing her sense of humor and flirty personality despite her mental state.

Moreover, Land of Women might be a crime drama, but the show's highlight is the dynamic between generations . As a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter are forced to leave their comfort zones and reconnect through an unfortunate turn of events, they finally get the chance to bond like never before. Kate, who is transgender, has had a hard time maintaining a close relationship with her mother since her transition, and Julia was living in a retirement home before her daughter whisked her away on this getaway trip. Sleeping in a cramped guest room and working in the fields producing wine becomes an opportunity for healing. When Longoria, Maura, and Bazua share the screen, you can't help but feel drawn to their evolving bond.

'Land of Women's Crime Subplot Is Neither Thrilling nor Melodramatic Enough

Eva Longoria standing in the middle of vineyard with an annoyed expression in 'Land of Women'.

With this leading trio making amends in the wine country, it is easy to forget that the show began with criminals knocking on Gala's door. When the hit men go after these three women, their presence in the Apple TV+ original becomes more annoying than thrilling . After all, the characters tracking them down are purely one-dimensional, and their posture is neither scary enough to make them threatening nor is it goofy enough to make them a perfect fit for telenovelas like La Reina Del Sur or Jane the Virgin .

Interestingly, the crime aspect of the series is its least compelling feature, given that the show's creators have crafted several women-led dramas with a dangerous twist. Showrunners Ramón Campos , Paula Fernandez , and Teresa Fernández-Valdés have lent backing to productions like High Seas and Cable Girls , which are great examples of projects that effectively blend female friendships and outlaw chases.

Despite this, the show's magnetic performances (especially Maura's) and its gorgeous backdrop are enjoyable enough to offer viewers a welcoming sense of escapism . Although Land of Women would've been better off if it were more high stakes, particularly when it comes to Gala's constant fear of having her hiding spot uncovered, it does score points for its well-developed dynamic between the series' leading trio.

Land of Women TV Show Featuring Eva Longoria, Carmen Maura, and Victoria Bazúa walking down a street with baggage

Land of Women is an enjoyable, female-led dramedy with a weak crime link.

  • Carmen Maura's performance is multi-faceted and compelling.
  • The leading trio's rekindling is one of the series' greatest assets.
  • The wine country setting provides a comforting sense of escapism.
  • The crime elements fall flat, despite the series being a crime drama.
  • The show's villains are one-dimensional, and their presence is more boring than thrilling.

The first two episodes of Land of Women will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 26.
