Amy Adams and Matthew Goode have the charm necessary to float a romantic comedy like "Leap Year," and this is a story that needs their buoyancy. A sort of conspiracy forms between the audience and the screen: We know what has to happen, and the movie knows what has to happen, and the point is to keep us amused. "Leap Year" does better than that: It made me care. It does that by not being too obvious about what it is obviously trying to do.

Let's start off on the same page. A sweet but over-organized young woman named Anna (Amy Adams) has been dating a high-powered heart surgeon named Jeremy ( Adam Scott ) for four years. He's pleasant, attentive, presentable and shares her goal of buying a condo in the best building in Boston. He does nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong. For veteran filmgoers, he has one fatal flaw: He has a healthy head of hair, and every strand is perfectly in place. No modern movie hero can have his hair combed.

When, oh, when, will Jeremy ask Anna to marry her? After dashing her hopes yet again, he hurries off to Dublin for a cardiologists' convention, because as we all know, it's a professional necessity for cardiologists to meet in faraway places they're always wanting to go. Anna is told that in Ireland on Leap Day every four years, a woman can ask a man to marry her. Anna double-checks this on the Web, somehow not discovering that this is believed nearly everywhere, and if for instance a man on Denmark turned her down, he would have to buy her pairs of gloves.

Anna flies off to Ireland. The flight lasts only long enough for her to survive severe turbulence. The plane is diverted to Cardiff. Is anyone surprised that Anna doesn't arrive in Dublin on schedule? Despite canceled ferry boats, she makes her way to Ireland by hiring a tugboat. The skipper says they can't land at Cork but must head for Dingle. Dingle in Ireland is more or less as far as you can get from Wales (or Dublin), but never mind.

We know what's coming. Anna must meet her co-star, Declan, played by Matthew Goode as the owner of the local pub. I suspect business has fallen off ever since Robert Mitchum left after filming " Ryan's Daughter " there in 1969. Anna is now wet and tired but still plucky. In the pub, she asks Declan how she can get to Dublin. Turns out Declan is not only the publican but the taxi driver and runs the local hotel. They get a good smile out of this, but wouldn't you be asking yourself why neither one mentions " Local Hero "?

OK, enough fooling with the plot. Let's agree it stays firmly on course, and that Anna and Declan argue all the way to Dublin through adventures that, by law, must include get getting all muddy and them being forced to share a bedroom together. Therefore, the success of the film depends on the acting and direction.

Amy Adams and Matthew Goode sell it with great negative chemistry and appeal. Adams has an ability to make things seem fresh and new; everything seems to be happening to her for the first time, and she has a particularly innocent sincerity that's convincing. (Who once said if you can fake sincerity, you can fake anything?) Goode is wisely not made too handsome. Oh, you could shoot him as handsome; he's good-looking, let's face it. But the director, Anand Tucker , shoots him as annoyed, rude and scruffy. Hair not too well combed.

Then take another look at Jeremy. I'm not going to say he's too handsome. All I have to say is that in a silent movie, he could simply walk on the screen and you'd know he's not going to get the girl. The movie carefully avoids making him a heavy. It's rather clever: He smoothly does more or less exactly what she's trained him to do, and what he doesn't understand is that she no longer believes in that version of himself.

Bottom line: This is a full-bore, PG-rated, sweet rom-com. It sticks to the track, makes all the scheduled stops and bears us triumphantly to the station. And it is populated by colorful characters, but then, when was the last time you saw a boring Irishman in a movie?

Movie Review

Anna’s life is like a well-ordered BlackBerry. Every detail has its place, time and purpose. Her professional life as a stager—setting up apartments to secure their optimum sales potential—is balanced and lucrative. Her social goal to be accepted into the most exclusive apartment community in the area is happening as planned. And her romance with Jeremy, a cardiologist, is purring along perfectly.

Well … maybe not perfectly . Jeremy’s been dragging his feet about the—ahem—marriage thing. And every time he shows up with a jewelry box in his hand it ends up being silly old diamond earrings or some other such foolishness.

This kind of lame execution is not worthy of a smartphone soldier such as Anna. And, frankly, it’s getting pretty frustrating.

Then Anna’s dad reminds her of a romantic Irish tradition that a great aunt once availed herself of: Every leap year on February 29, inclined Irish women can freely ask beaus for their hand in marriage, and they’re not to be rebuffed.

It just so happens that Jeremy is attending a cardiologist’s seminar in Dublin. And it just so happens to be the latter part of February in a leap year. And it just so happens that Anna is inclined. And it just so happens that the whole thing can niche into her schedule.

But it also just so happens that a storm diverts her flight … to Wales. And after making it across the Irish Sea, the only person who can drive her to Dublin by the 29th is a scruffy barkeep (Declan) who keeps calling her an idiot.

One disaster deserves another, it seems. And soon Anna is covered in mud and cow poo. Her heart is playing tricks on her, too. Anna’s ordered life is about to take some unscheduled turns.

Positive Elements

In characters’ choices and in some very direct lines of dialogue it’s made clear that loving commitment and marriage go hand in hand. Married owners of an Irish Bed & Breakfast, for instance, speak glowingly of their 44 years together. And their house rules demand that boarders be married if they’re to sleep in the same room. Even though Anna seems at first to want a ring on her finger as an attainment rather than a commitment, with time she realizes the lasting value of what it signifies.

Declan initially comes off as a bit gruff, but he sports solid views on relationships. When Anna tells a story of her father’s poor choices, Declan states his sorrow for her misfortune, saying, “A father is someone you should be able to rely on.” Declan’s small township of friends all rally round to help him pay off a debt.

[ Spoiler Warning ] Anna finally realizes that her overly structured life hasn’t been healthy. And she proposes that she and Declan not make plans together, but stay in each other’s lives. He surprises her, though, by saying that he definitely wants to make plans with her. And then he goes to one knee to propose. They marry by movie’s end.

Spiritual Elements

On the plane, Anna talks with a priest sitting next to her. When a storm suddenly tosses them around, the man begins silently praying. Stone crosses are seen scattered about the grounds of an ancient castle.

Folksy superstitions voiced (that nobody really believes) include, “You shouldn’t start a journey on a Saturday” and, “It’s bad luck to have a black cat cross your path.”

Sexual Content

Even though Declan and Anna are tempted—and must sleep in the same small bed on one occasion—they set clear boundaries for their physical contact and keep their distance.

A few couples kiss—sometimes passionately.

Anna wears tight-fitting skirts and low-cut tops, as do some other women at a party. Declan bursts into Anna’s room when she’s only dressed in a skimpy bra and panties. (She covers up after the camera gets a quick look.) Anna and Declan are shown wrapped in towels after showers at one point. Declan makes a joke about Jeremy’s “little thing.”

Violent Content

The high-heeled Anna takes several tumbles during her road trip. At one point, for instance, she is running down a rain-washed hillside and falls, sliding face-first into a mud bog. Declan’s car also rolls down a hillside, crashing into a stream. During a wedding reception, Anna’s shoe accidentally flies off and hits the bride in the forehead.

Declan gets into a fistfight with several guys who stole Anna’s suitcase. Anna chips in as the melee escalates, kicking one guy and throwing whiskey into another guy’s face.

Crude or Profane Language

As Declan and Anna burst into a church wedding during a hail storm, he blurts out “Jesus Christ” and she belatedly follows with “… is Lord!” Jesus’ name is abused one other time; God’s name is exclaimed seven or eight times. A half-dozen uses of “h‑‑‑,” a couple of “a‑‑” and one of “d‑‑n.”

Drug and Alcohol Content

A number of scenes take place in pubs or bars, where everyone has a glass of beer in their hands or at their lips. Sometimes the casual drinking turns into drunkenness. One guy in a Boston bar, for instance, downs shots and is obviously tipsy when he asks Anna to marry him. Later a pub drinker stands up and immediately falls to the floor on his face. Anna over-imbibes at one point as well: She moves to kiss Declan and throws up on his shoes.

Anna and Declan pass a bottle of wine back and forth while cooking a meal. Other folks drink wine with dinner. And partygoers drink from champagne flutes and wine glasses.

Other Negative Elements

Anna and Declan lie about being married in order to stay at the Bed & Breakfast. Anna steps in a pile of cow manure for a little road humor. Thieves giggle over her underwear and put it on their heads.

Ever since Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert mixed it up back in It Happened One Night (and probably even before that), Hollywood has been concocting comedies that force two romantic opposites into a disastrous blender of mishaps for an audience’s amusement. And from the moment the pretty girl meets the roguishly handsome diamond in the rough, we know what’ll happen. They’re going to go at it like two cats in a sack. And then emotions will suddenly turn from disdain to desire in the course of an accidental stumble or an unexpected smooch.

Our enjoyment of said comedic fluff really comes down to two things: 1) Is the negative content that surrounds them subdued or brazen, and 2) Is the couple in question appealing enough to hang around with for an hour and a half? As for the former, Leap Year keeps the sexual stuff stuffed down into the bottom of Anna’s Louis Vuitton suitcase, but it dabbles a bit too much in heavy drinking and it abuses Jesus’ name.

The latter? Amy Adams and Matthew Goode fill their tried-and-true roles well, making us care about their characters, despite their obvious flaws and the silliness of their circumstances. Leap Year also insists that love—especially true and solid Irish love—equals marriage. And marriage, when carried through with all your heart, equals a long, happy life. “I had everything that I ever wanted but nothing that I really needed,” Anna concludes.

As the credits roll, we can almost believe that lasting love might have been right and truly forged in a fortnight. And we can almost convince ourselves that we haven’t seen this frothy tale two dozen times before.

Positive Messages

Although the movie makes the worthwhile point that women don’t have to sit and wait for their boyfriends to propose -- that they're in command of their own destinies -- it still pretty much hews to Hollywood's standard boy-meets-girl, boy-gets-girl, boy-loses-girl, couple-is-reunited fairy-tale structure.

Positive Role Models

Anna is very self-sufficient, but she comes off as kind of brittle, as if she just needs the "right guy“ to bring out her warmer side. Declan seems walled up -- like he's also waiting for the "right girl“ to make him feel safe enough to take a chance on love.

Violence & Scariness

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this upbeat but shallow romcom hews closely to traditional Hollywood formulas. While there isn't much in the way of age-inappropriate content for older tweens and teens -- who may find the banter between stars Amy Adams and Matthew Goode somewhat amusing -- the movie does tap into tired stereotypes about men, women, and romance. Adams' character is supposed to be seen as self-sufficient, but she ultimately comes off as yet another Hollywood female character who's just waiting for "the right one" to make everything right in her life. On the up side, language, sex, and violence are quite tame. To stay in the loop on more movies like this, you can sign up for weekly Family Movie Night emails .

Fine, but not for kids. Some kids could possibly watch it

Good movie but..., what's the story.

When her longtime boyfriend, Jeremy ( Adam Scott ), fails to propose before flying off to a medical conference in Dublin, Anna ( Amy Adams ) decides to take matters into her own hands. Leap Day (the 29th of February) is imminent, and the Irish apparently have a custom in which women can ask their boyfriends for their hand in marriage on that particular day. But a storm undoes her best-laid plans, and a detour lands her in beautiful but far-off Dingle. She hopes to get to the city in time by enlisting a broody local named Declan ( Matthew Goode) as her guide ... but he may just prove too intriguing for her to resist.

Is It Any Good?

Armchair tourists will find some good in this bland romantic comedy thanks to breathtaking shots of the Emerald Isle that will surely have them fantasizing about a visit. But there's not much else going for LEAP YEAR. How a stew featuring the appealing Adams, the magnetic Goode, and lyrical director Anand Tucker (who also helmed Hilary and Jackie and Shopgirl ) fails to generate any sparks is beyond comprehension. ( John Lithgow even makes a cameo.) What we get instead is an uninspired romcom that steps into the genre's every well-worn tread.

Polar-opposite personalities, meet-cute setup, overwrought situations created expressly to showcase how both characters change as they get to know each other -- that's all here. And must the other guy always seem like such a stooge? What's missing is chemistry -- Adams and Goode seem more like siblings -- and inventive storytelling to keep us glued to our seats, even though we know that, yes, indeed, there will be a happily ever after.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about what the film is saying about love and committment. Why does Anna want to marry Jeremy? Is she actually in love, or is she just ready to make a commitment and he happens to be the one she's with? What does that say about relationships?

Is Anna a positive role model for women? Is she dependent on relationships for happiness, or is she truly self sufficient?

How does this movie compare to other Hollywood romantic comedies? Is it a genre that's difficult to reinvent? If so, why?

Leap Year

Review by Brian Eggert January 8, 2010

Leap Year

Almost everything you need to know about Leap Year is in the trailer. Why do you need to see the movie? Because you want to know who the plucky girl ends up with (as if you couldn’t guess), since that’s the only aspect of the story that the trailer doesn’t reveal. It ought to come with a spoiler warning (this review does). Then again, you don’t see a movie like this to find out what happens. Of course, the two characters on the movie poster end up together—that’s why they’re on the poster. You sit through this movie because you enjoy romantic comedies and the warm feelings they give you. This one is full of warm feelings and laughter and attractive stars doing endearing-if-predictable things.

The movie begins with Anna (Amy Adams), who has been dating a successful, well-groomed surgeon named Jeremy (Adam Scott) for four years. He doesn’t seem to get that she wants a ring, and apparently, they don’t have the kind of relationship where they talk about marriage. Jeremy goes off to a medical convention in Ireland, leaving Amy to sulk until she remembers that there’s an old Irish adage that says every four years on Leap Day, a woman can ask a man to marry her. Why she can’t do that any other day of the year is beyond understanding; Anna is simply desperate for a reason to get married. (Question: Are these two such traditionalists that it would end their four-year relationship if she proposed on February 28 or March 1?)

Anyway, Anna decides to follow Jeremy to Ireland and surprise him with her proposal. But, of course, her plane doesn’t arrive on time and she’s diverted to Cardiff instead of Dublin. At a local pub, she meets Declan (Matthew Goode), who offers to drive her to the rendezvous so she can propose. On the way, the two get into all sorts of silly rom-com trouble. They play a couple to get The Last Room in Ireland, and there’s that moment where they’re forced to fake a kiss to keep up the act, during which they realize that smacking lips with each other was pretty nice (see last year’s The Proposal for the same scene). If after that you believe she’ll end up with her boyfriend at the end of the movie, well, there’s just no helping you.

Directed by Anand Tucker ( Shopgirl ) and written by husband and wife screenwriting team Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont ( Can’t Hardly Wait ), the movie suspiciously resembles the 1945 British romance I Know Where I’m Going! by filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The two plots are grossly similar, save for a shift from Scotland in the earlier film to Ireland in the new one. In Powell and Pressburger’s picture, a snooty woman (Wendy Hiller) thinks she’s in love with the money of a wealthy Scottish Lord and plans to get hitched, but she’s forced to wait on the mainland for the windy waters to settle before she can travel by boat to be married on his isle. While waiting, she meets a rugged Scotsman (Roger Livesey) and finds herself falling in love with him; eventually, she drops her gold-digger plot and chooses the man she actually loves. That Powell and Pressburger weren’t mentioned in the credits of Leap Year is troublesome.

Leap Year plays out complete with all the expected rom-com antics, taking us nowhere we haven’t been before and enjoyed a lot more. But the movie is harmless, more so than others of its kind with a PG rating. Because the result is so incredibly conventional, there’s not much to savor here beyond the actors. The ever-cute Adams plays her role as if she’s never lived a day in her life, an acting niche she’s more than explored already (see Enchanted or Miss Pettigrew Lives for Day ). Goode makes a likable beau; his Irish charm and charming good looks are certainly charming. And Scott’s character Jeremy is so thinly drawn that we don’t even mind when Anna chooses Declan over him—whoops, did I spoil that for you? If these few bits of acting talent are enough to save the movie for you, by all means, see it. The rest of us will be waiting for something more inventive from the genre.

Leap Year

When their four-year anniversary passes without a marriage proposal, Anna (Amy Adams) decides to take matters into her own hands. Investing in an Irish tradition that allows women to propose to men on February 29th, Anna decides to follow her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) to Dublin and get down on one knee herself. But airplanes, weather and fate leave Anna stranded on the other side of Ireland, and she enlists the help of handsome and surly Declan (Matthew Goode - Brideshead Revisited , Watchmen ) to get her across the country. As you might imagine, best laid plans are thrown asunder.

When Anna's ( Amy Adams, "Enchanted," "Julie & Julia") boyfriend Jeremy ( Adam Scott, "Knocked Up," " Step Brothers") presents her with diamond earrings instead of the expected engagement ring , she decides to take matters into her own hands using the Irish tradition that a woman may propose to a man on February 29, but once in Ireland her plans are derailed when she meets a local, Declan (Matthew Goode, "Watchmen," " A Single Man"), during " Leap Year."

Laura's Review: C-

This film is a wallow in sub-mediocrity not only by stars Adams and Goode, who somehow remain likeable, but for director Anand Tucker (" Hilary and Jackie," "And When Did You Last See Your Father?") as well. What is undeniably the worst aspect of the movie, however, is that screenwriters Deborah Kaplan & Harry Elfont's (" Surviving Christmas," "Made of Honor") work is being treated as original when what they have done is a charmless hack of Powell and Pressburger's " I Know Where I'm Going" with a dash of "Local Hero's" (itself based on "I Know Where I'm Going") all purpose innkeeper thrown in. About all "Leap Year" has going for it is its scenery (which includes Goode and Adams). In "I Know Where I'm Going" a wealthy woman has a difficult journey to a Scottish isle where she is set to marry her industrialist fiance. Bad weather keeps her from making her final crossing and she meets the penniless local Laird who dances with her at a local caleigh and has a charming family legend tied to the ruins of a castle which ends up applying to them. All Kaplan and Elfont have done is transfer the action to Ireland and thrown in the Leap Year twist. Otherwise their heroine has an arduous journey to become engaged, meets a local pub owner who takes her to a ruined castle and tells her its legend, which mirrors what is happening with them and dances with her at a local wedding which they crash. In both, the woman's big city ways are brought down to earth, but in "Leap Year" she's turned into a fool who wears $600 peep-toed platforms in the dead of winter, through hurricanes and cow pastures, even knocking out a bride by flinging one while dancing (a scene as painful for the audience as for the bride). Further, the filmmakers make some seriously lazy gaffes regarding time tables. The 'Boston' opening is not only clearly not Boston (aside from an establishing skyline, the film was shot entirely in Ireland), but cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel's ("Valkyrie") lighting is so harsh, one can see every pore and downy hair on Adams's face. Things improve when the action changes to the Emerald Isle where interior lighting becomes much warmer and locations are often breathtakingly beautiful. Adams's Anna is a bit of a pill and it's difficult to buy into Declan's romantic feelings for her, but the actress's natural glow and spirit eventually just squeak through (which, frankly, is what happens with "I Know Where I'm Going's" Wendy Hiller although Hiller kept her dignity intact). Matthew Goode has slowly been building a solid and varied filmography and remains very appealing in not very good movies, "Leap Year" being his only misstep since his American feature debut in 2004's " Chasing Liberty" (a film I only remember for having taken note of the actor). Third billed John Lithgow (SHOtime's "Dexter") has only one short scene as Anna's irresponsible father who sets up the Leap Day proposal concept. Veteran Irish character actors Tony Rohr and Maggie McCarthy add some color as a Stationmaster and his wife who run a romantic but morally strict B&B. The film wraps just the way one would expect, with a contrived bump in even the final scene which sends Anna, in one of the ugliest dresses a woman could pick to woo a man, out to scenic Irish cliffs. Kaplan and Elfont, whose (worse) " Made of Honor" involved an American going to Scotland and getting engaged to a local, definitely need a change of scenery - go Brách.

Summary [ ]

The film follows a real estate worker who heads to Ireland to ask her boyfriend to accept her wedding proposal on leap day , when tradition supposedly holds that men cannot refuse a woman's proposal for marriage. Her plans are interrupted by a series of events and are further complicated when she hires an Irish innkeeper to take her to her boyfriend in Dublin. Principal photography took place in County Wicklow , Dublin , County Mayo , and County Galway , with filming taking place in and around the Aran Islands , Connemara , Temple Bar , Georgian Dublin , Wicklow National Park, and Olaf Street, Waterford .

Successful real estate stager Anna Brady is frustrated that her cardiologist boyfriend Jeremy Sloane still has not proposed to her after four years. She decides to travel from Boston to Dublin , to propose to him on February 29, leap day , while he is there at a conference. Anna wishes to invoke an Irish tradition, Bachelor's Day , that a man who is proposed to on leap day must accept the proposal.

During the flight, a storm diverts the plane to Cardiff , Wales . Anna hires a boat to take her west to Cork . The severity of the storm forces her to be put ashore at a small seaside village called Dingle. Anna requests Declan O'Callaghan, a surly Irish innkeeper, to taxi her to Dublin. At first he refuses, but after his tavern is threatened with foreclosure, he agrees to drive her for € 500. Along the way, he mocks her belief in a leap year tradition of women proposing to men.

A herd of cows blocks the road. Anna steps in cow dung while attempting to move the animals, and tries to clean her shoes while leaning on Declan's car, which causes it to roll downhill into a stream. Continuing on foot, Anna flags down a van with three travellers who offer her a lift. Ignoring Declan's warning, Anna hands them her luggage. They drive off without her. Anna and Declan make their way on foot to a roadside pub, where they discover the three thieves going through Anna's luggage. Declan fights them and retrieves Anna's bag.

While waiting for a train, they ask each other what they would grab if their homes were on fire and they had only 60 seconds to flee. They lose track of time and miss the train. They are forced to stay at a bed & breakfast in Tipperary , where they pretend to be married so that their conservative hosts will allow them to stay. During dinner, when other couples kiss to show their love for each other, Anna and Declan are "forced" to kiss as well. This stirs feelings that neither had expected. They sleep in the same bed, but do not admit their new feelings for each other.

While hitchhiking , Anna and Declan are caught in a hailstorm and take shelter in a nearby church, where a wedding is taking place. They are invited to the reception, where Anna gets drunk. Anna questions her own intentions with Jeremy and realizes that she has feelings for Declan. Just as the two are about to kiss, Anna vomits and passes out. The following day they arrive in Dublin. Declan reveals he was once engaged but his fiancée ran off to Dublin with his mother's claddagh ring and his best friend. Anna suggests that while in Dublin, he should ask for his mother's ring back. When they arrive at the hotel where Jeremy is staying, Jeremy surprises Anna by proposing to her right in the lobby. Seeing that Declan had already walked out of the hotel, she accepts Jeremy's proposal.

At their engagement party in Boston, Anna learns that Jeremy proposed because he thought it was the only way to appease the co-op board of the apartment building the couple wanted to move into. Dismayed, Anna pulls the fire alarm and waits, testing the 60-second concept she discussed with Declan earlier. Jeremy retrieves all of their electronic materials and neglects to check for Anna. Anna realizes there is nothing in the apartment that means anything to her, including Jeremy. Meanwhile, in Dublin, Declan retrieves his mother's claddagh ring from his ex-fiancée.

Anna returns to the tavern in Dingle, where Declan has pulled together the balance he owed his property owner with the help of the community. She tells him she has broken off her engagement and proposes that they get together, and not make plans. Declan leaves. Thinking she has been rejected, Anna rushes outside to the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea. Declan emerges, revealing that he went out to retrieve his mother's claddagh ring. Declan says he wants to make plans with her, and proposes on the cliffside. Anna happily accepts. They drive away in Declan's car after marrying, leaving their destination open to fate.

Production [ ]

On October 17, 2008, it was announced that Amy Adams was to star in the film as Anna Brady. On November 23, Anand Tucker signed on to direct the film, with Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan collaborating on the screenplay. On February 12, 2009, it was announced that Matthew Goode would be playing the role of Declan O'Callaghan, the surly innkeeper. On March 18, it was announced that Adam Scott was to play Jeremy Sloane, Anna's long time boyfriend, and that Kaitlin Olson would play Libby, Anna's best friend. The film was shot in County Wicklow , Dublin , County Mayo and County Galway , with filming taking place in and around the Aran Islands , Connemara , Temple Bar , Georgian Dublin , Wicklow National Park and Olaf Street, Waterford . On October 19, it was announced that Randy Edelman had been chosen to compose the film's score . The decision to choose Edelman came as a surprise, as Tucker had used Barrington Pheloung for two of his previous films, Hilary & Jackie and When Did You Last See Your Father? .

Reception [ ]

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 23% and an average rating of 4.30/10 based on reviews from 141 critics. The site's critical consensus is that: " Amy Adams is as appealing as ever, but her charms aren't enough to keep Leap Year from succumbing to an overabundance of clichés and an unfunny script'." On Metacritic the film has a weighted average score out of 33 out of 100, based on 30 reviews. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a grade B on scale of A to F.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it 3 out of 4, and described Leap Year as a 'full-bore, PG-rated, sweet rom-com'. 'It sticks to the track, makes all the scheduled stops, and bears us triumphantly to the station'. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B− grade, stating that the film could have used more 'pizzazz'.

Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club , gave it a grade of C− and concluded, "The film functions as the cinematic equivalent of a Shamrock Shake: sickeningly, artificially sweet, formulaic, and about as authentically Gaelic as an Irish Spring commercial". A. O. Scott of The New York Times saw it as "so witless, charmless, and unimaginative, that it can be described as a movie only in a strictly technical sense". Richard Roeper gave it a C−, stating that it had a 'Recycled plot, lame sight gags, Leprechaun -like stock Irish characters,' adding that 'The charms of Amy Adams rescue Leap Year from Truly Awful status'. [ failed verification ]

Donald Clarke of The Irish Times gave the film one star out of five, and in a scathing review, described it as 'offensive, reactionary, patronising filth' and cited the film as evidence that 'Hollywood is incapable of seeing the Irish as anything but IRA men or twinkly rural imbeciles'. Paul Whitington of the Irish Independent describes the film as "grotesque and insulting paddywhackery " and says Goode is out of his depth as he "struggle[s] badly with his accent".

The film's lead actor Matthew Goode admitted 'I just know that there are a lot of people who will say it is the worst film of 2010' and revealed that the main reason he signed on to the film was so that he could work close to home and be able to see his girlfriend and newborn daughter.

It’s a leap year ! If you’re looking for the perfect way to celebrate this February’s extra day, look no further than “Leap Year,” the 2010 romantic comedy from Anand Tucker starring Amy Adams .

In the film, Adams’ Anna, a successful real estate stager, grows tired of waiting for her longtime boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) to propose. When he heads to Dublin for a work conference, Anna learns of the Irish tradition known as Bachelor’s Day, during which women can propose to men on Feb. 29, aka Leap Day.

‘sight’ and upcoming films demonstrate angel studios’ tricky leap of faith, venice 2024: ‘joker 2,’ angelina jolie’s ‘maria,’ ‘queer’ starring daniel craig and johnny depp-directed 'modì' eyed for lineup (exclusive), popular on variety.

Their journey together includes some of the all-time great rom-com tropes, from the duo being forced to share a single bed at a bed & breakfast, having to kiss to pretend they’re a couple and experiencing a drunken night of revelry bringing their true feelings to the surface.

When Jeremy reemerges and offers Anna everything she’s hoped for, she’s forced to decide between her well-made plans and her growing feelings for Declan.

The film was largely panned by critics upon its release, with Dennis Harvey calling it “pedestrian” and “gratingly old-fashioned” in his Variety review . Time even called it the worst film of the year .

“Citizen Kane” it’s not, but “Leap Year” is the perfect romp for those who enjoy elevated Hallmark fare and a sweet (if not groundbreaking) romance. Adams oozes charisma in a performance filled with heart and humor, flanked by a fun supporting cast including Kaitlin Olson and John Lithgow.

Set against the backdrop of the Irish countryside, the scenery alone makes this one worth a watch (even though anyone with a cursory knowledge of Irish geography will quickly notice a slew of inaccuracies, like characters walking from Dingle to Tipperary in a single day).

This Leap Day, consider turning your brain off for just a moment and enjoying this charming, imperfect blast from the past.

Rotten Tomatoes® Score

It doesn’t reach such giddy heights, as the veil of naturalism remains, drawing dark, absurd humour out of straightforwardly grim situations, reaching a particular NSFW peak...

Almost everything you need to know about Leap Year is in the trailer. Why do you need to see the movie? ...You sit through this movie because you enjoy romantic comedies and the warm feelings they give you.

The worst film of 2010. [Full review in Spanish]

Nothing deep, but its serendipity nature is uplifting for those of us who believe that life is full of surprises and somehow it works out the way it's supposed to be.

...so painfully contrived that it drains the spirit and disturbs the soul; rarely has a film strived for laughs to so little effect...

No romantic comedy or Emerald Isle cliché is left unturned, but Adams and Goode's charm should be enough to get an indulgent viewer to the finishing line.

A decent way for budding couples to begin 2010.

Welcome another gentleman Brit to possible leading-man status in Hollywood. Everyone else involved should redact Leap Year from his or her résumé.

Poor Amy Adams.

If a worse film is released this year I'll eat my own weight in cuddly leprechauns. So I will. So I will.

No, the romantic comedy Leap Year isn't on Netflix to watch on Leap Day (where to stream)

By mads lennon | feb 29, 2024.

Leap Year Official Trailer #1 - Amy Adams, Matthew Goode Movie (2010) HD

This year marks a special one because it's a leap year, meaning that we get one extra day today, February 29, 2024. This occasion only happens once every four years, which means it seems like a good time to revisit the adorable 2010 romantic comedy film Leap Year co-starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode.

Unfortunately for Netflix subscribers, Leap Year is no longer available to watch on the platform, at least, not in the United States. As of right now, the movie actually isn't streaming on any of the major streaming services. Instead, you'll need to rent or purchase the movie digitally (or physically) to revisit it in time for this unique holiday.

For those who would like to rent or buy the movie at home, you can rent it for $3.99 or buy it for $4.99 . Usually, the price is higher, but it looks like most services are running a limited sale timed for Leap Day that brings the price down from $14.99, so now is the best time to get it!

Below is a list of the services where you can currently purchase or rent Leap Year digitally.

  • Google Play

Anand Tucker ( The Critic ) directed this charming rom-com with a script penned by Can't Hardly Wait and Josie and the Pussycats duo Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan.

Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Adams plays Anna, who travels to Ireland to meet with her boyfriend Declan (Matthew Goode) on leap day. Tradition says that on this specific day, women are encouraged to propose to their boyfriends instead of the other way around, but Anna's plans are interrupted by a series of mishaps.

While Leap Year didn't exactly garner critical praise when it debuted, it has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years thanks to the chemistry between its leads and because it's one of the few mainstream films actually centered on the premise of a leap year.

Why Michael J. Fox Regrets These Comedy Flops

Michael j. fox's fight against parkinson's disease, micheal j. fox regretted these roles, the best michael j. fox movies and where you can watch them.

  • Michael J. Fox's legacy was impacted by his Parkinson's diagnosis, leading to a shift in his career ambitions.
  • Fox has expressed regret for choosing specific roles, like Life With Mikey and For Love or Money.
  • Despite some commercial failures, Fox's career is still celebrated with iconic roles like Marty McFly and Frank Bannister.

Canadian-born actor Michael J. Fox had humble beginnings, coming from an army family and taking his own route by going into acting. His first major success, Family Ties , led him to the lead role in the '80s classic Back to the Future , with his career only growing from there. However, Fox's legacy would see a shift with his diagnosis of Parkinson's, affecting his career ambitions but also pushing Fox to activism and charity to help others with the neurodegenerative disease.

The diagnosis has certainly underscored Michael J. Fox's career, and there was a period when the actor suffered flop after flop. However, in a recent interview, he spoke out about his mindset during this period, which also alluded to him specifically regretting certain roles he took in a bid to attract stardom with the worries of his diagnosis looming over him. We will look at which roles he was likely speaking about, how they vastly performed at the box office, and the actor's triumphs on and off-screen.

In a deeply insightful interview with the New York Times , Micheal J. Fox spoke candidly about his ongoing fight against Parkinson's, activism and charity work, and career. Throughout the interview, Fox's passion for helping others and furthering the cause to find a cure for Parkinson's, a neurological disease caused by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain that leads to various physical and mental health issues, is obvious. This, famously, led to him founding "The Michael J. Fox Foundation," which, as of 2023, raised $2 billion for Parkinson's research projects, making it the largest nonprofit for Parkinson's research in the world.

His continued fight against the disease and activism have undeniably affected Fox's view of his career. The recent interview touched on how the two became entwined in his mind during the early stages of his diagnosis and his stardom. The following quote summarizes his push when he was privately struggling with the affliction.

"If I’d had any imperative to accomplish anything with movies, it shouldn’t have been to do as many quick successful ones as I could. It should’ve been to do as many good ones as I could. To do one good one. To find something that meant something to me." Michael J. Fox

Ryan Reynolds Shares Touching, Heartfelt Tribute to MIchael J Fox

Ryan Reynolds has been a long-time friend of Back to the Future star Michael J Fox, and that shows in his recent social media post.

In the interview, Michael J. Fox shared that he felt he was rushing into roles to try to land a big one while dealing privately with his Parkinson's (diagnosed in 1991, disclosed in 1998). While he does not name which movies he refers to in the interview, a series of box office flops and critical failures plagued the actor during this time. Specifically, he speaks about a personal shift around 1994 when he saw that he was taking the wrong parts . With this time frame in mind, it is not a huge leap to place these following box office flops as the movies he was mentioning:

"It wasn’t until ’94 that I started getting it. That’s when I started to accept the disease — and acceptance doesn’t mean resignation." Michael J. Fox

Life With Mikey (1993) — Mikey Chapman (Michael J. Fox), a former child star from a 1970s sitcom, is now running a talent agency for other child actors with his brother Ed (Nathan Lane). When Mikey, by chance, meets a young pickpocket, Angie Vega (Christina Vidal), he sees her potential in the industry and tries to turn her into the next big star and cement their agency as star-finders for young talent. On a budget of $12 million, the movie only grossed $12.4 million at the box office; the movie sits at 25% critic and 39% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The horror comedy The Frighteners by Peter Jackson was also a commercial failure for Michael J. Fox , grossing 29.3 million on a budget of 30 million. However, unlike the previously mentioned titles, The Frighteners has found appreciation and cult status after its release. Fox's success varied as a supporting actor during this period as well, with Where the Rivers Flow North (1993) being a flop despite critical acclaim and 1995's Blue in the Face being a smash hit off a modest budget. Still, Michael J. Fox's career from 1991 to 98 is mostly marred by poorly performing and received roles.

  8. Leap Year Movie Review

October 29, 2011. age 13+. Fine, but not for kids. Some kids could possibly watch it. Great film. It's a nice romance and one of my favourites. But slightly not appropriate for children because of the two sleeping together, nude silhouette and the very passionate kissing scene between the two main characters.
