2013, 50 Writers, 50 Books - The Best of Indian Fiction
When the first novel of a young Bhalchandra Nemade was published in 1963, it caused a sensation in Marathi literary circles. This essay examines Kosala's literary merit, its claim to greatness and how the passage of time has treated the novel.

The Indian novel has been a vibrant and energetic expressive space in the 21st century. While the grand postcolonial gestures characteristic of the late-20th-century Indian novel have been in evidence in new novels by established authors such as Vikram Chandra, Amitav Ghosh, and Salman Rushdie, a slate of new authors has emerged in this period as well, charting a range of new novelistic modes. Some of these authors are Kiran Desai, Aravind Adiga, Githa Hariharan, Samina Ali, Karan Mahajan, and Amitava Kumar. In general, there has been a move away from ambitious literary fiction in the form of the " huge, baggy monster " that led to the publication of several monumental postcolonial novels in the 1980s and 1990s; increasingly the most dynamic and influential Indian writing uses new novelistic forms and literary styles tied to the changing landscape of India's current contemporary social and political problems. The newer generation of authors has also eschewed the aspiration to represent the entirety of life in modern India, and instead aimed to explore much more limited regional and cultural narrative frameworks. If a novel like Rushdie's Midnight's Children (1981) took its protagonist all over the Indian subcontinent and indexed a large number of important historical controversies in the interest of broad representation, Padma Viswnanathan's The Toss of a Lemon (2008) limits itself to a focus on a single Tamil Brahmin family's orientation to issues of caste and gender, and remains effectively local to Tamil Nadu. There is no central agenda or defining idiom of this emerging literary culture, but three major groupings can be identified that encapsulate the major themes and preoccupations of 21st-century Indian fiction: " New Urban Realism, " " Gender and Secular History, " and " Globalizing India, Reinscribing the Past. "

Bhalchandra Nemade is the author of six novels, ranging from Kosla (1963) to Hindu (2010). He has also published two collections of poetry and several substantial books of criticism. He occupied a significant place in Bombay literary life in the 1960s and is at the center of the Marathi canon today. In this interview, conducted in Dahisar, Mumbai in 2011 and continued in 2015 in Santa Cruz, Mumbai, Nemade discusses his studies in Pune, and his early encounters with the Marathi tradition, his arrival in Bombay and involvement with the journal Rahasyaranjan. He recounts his move to Aurangabad and his part in establishing the little magazine Vacha, and his connections and collaborations with other writers in the intellectual and artistic milieu of the 1960s and after. Nemade also reflects on his defence of nativism or deshivad, and his misgivings about the place of English in Indian education.

Every literature is a reflection of its own period. The twentieth century in India is remarked to be the era which changed the face of India forever. The pre-independence struggle along with the changing political and social atmosphere set the tone for the early 1900s, while the crux of these uprisings led to the ultimate freedom for India from the British colonial rule in mid-1940s. The years that followed were of disarranged and distorted constructions of a new India. From going through the brutal and horrifying partition, to conquering problems internally, India was losing many battles after winning the war. It is at this time, when literature of partition, of history turned into words, came to form a huge canon of its own. The themes changed, from one kind of struggle to another, from past glories to present victories and hopeful futures. On the other hand, India had also to come around the newly acquired language which it couldn't shake off its tongue-English. English kept on cumulating new meanings for Indians by becoming a language they had learned under compulsion and slowly being accepted as a language they felt is now their own. To say that India only went through major political changes in the twentieth century is a huge understatement; as cultural, social, economic, lingual, and psychological changes were equal contributors to twentieth century Indian literature, arisen out of this modern history. This paper attempts to journey across these changing themes and language(s) from the early twentieth century to the dawn of twenty-first, when Indian fiction in English explored, expanded, and underwent many impactful currents of change, only today, to be widely accepted in the West as refined and worthy.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, people across India began to write books they called "novels, " sometimes using traditional terms for 'story' or 'prose narrative' in their respective language, sometimes simply using the English term "novel. " Only recently critics have acknowledged that this 'emergence of the novel' in India was not simply the importation of a Western form or a borrowed genre, but rather a set of complex sociocultural processes that varied signi cantly from one linguistic region and literary tradition to another. is chapter examines the question of realism in the early novels written in Indian languages, i.e., the question of how precisely the earliest Indian novels related to the societies from which they originated.
The book examines the Hindi laghukatha - a modern Indian prose genre that has been published since the 1970s in Hindi newspapers and magazines and is characterised by its concise form (500 words on average) and socio-political agenda. The importance of the genre within the Hindi literary scene lies in the fact that the laghukatha is based on indigenous genres which have been modernised, whereas the Hindi short story and the novel are Western genres that have been appropriated and Indianised. A thorough investigation of around 280 primary texts accompanied by an evaluation of the relevant Hindi criticism gives a comprehensive literary analysis of this genre and its historical development. This allows, in conclusion, to delineate an "ideal type" of laghukatha, suggesting a range of compulsory, desirable and optional features. English translations of almost 50 representative Hindi texts complete the picture.

Exactly when Marathi novels emerged has always been a topic for discussion. Because the concept of the novel has come to us from English literature. Before we had long stories. It is also called a short novel by some critics. But the first novel in the English period, "Yamuna Tourism" (यमु ना पयय टन) was recorded in 1857. Later, along with realistic novels, delightful novels started from 1861. Later in 1871, The historical novel also started in the form of Gunjikar's novel Mochangad. Explaining the motivations behind the creation of novels in that context, Vasudev Sawant says, that this is the result of a Ranjanwadi novel. The rural novel was written by Krishnarao Bhalekar in 1888 under the title 'Baliba Patil' and published in the magazine Deenmitra. The journey of Marathi literature which started from 1857 has come to till today (2020). There are many novelists among them H.

The paper is an attempt to trace the emerging trends in the Indian English fiction, particularly novels in the twenty first century. Literature of the present century is very different from the previous one as it has new issues and challenges to address. In fact, the very concept of culture as well as literature has undergone enormous change over the years and with these changing paradigms, the authors too are experimenting profusely with themes, styles and techniques of writing in order to properly and effectively communicate the new sensibilities of contemporary time. History, myth, science, technology, ecology, environment, gender, politics-all are being told and re-told from myriad perspectives. Innovative forms and techniques are coming into being such as graphic novels, Chick-lit, Science fiction, disability novels, pulp fiction, ecological fiction, gerontological fiction, gay/lesbian novels and various others to capture all the possible aspects of human life and society.
