Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the PhD program at IGNOU, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Educational Qualification:

Candidates should have a Master’s degree or an M.Phil. degree in a relevant discipline related to the PhD subject with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/PWD candidates).

Candidates should have 4 Year/ 8 Semester Bachelors Degree with at least 75% marks or equivalent grade.

Entrance Test:

All candidates, except those with an M.Phil. degree or those who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship, must pass the IGNOU PhD entrance test.

Note: Candidates awarded with fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC- CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar National level tests, do not have to give the Entrance Test. Their selection will be solely based on interview.

Candidates who clear the entrance test are called for an interview where their research proposals and academic potential are evaluated.

Program Structure and Duration

IGNOU Ph.D. Entrance Exam 2024

IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam 2024 will be conducted on 07 January 2024 by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The test will be conducted in various centers across the country. Anyone intending to be admitted to the IGNOU Ph.D. program under any specialization is required to take the test. The minimum eligibility criteria to take the test is that the candidates must have a PG or MPhil degree from a UGC-recognized institution.

IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam has 70% weightage in the selection process, and after qualifying for the test, candidates will be able to go in the Interview/ Viva round. The question paper contains 50% of questions from specified subjects and the rest 50% from research methodology. The exam duration is 3 Hours  which has 100 questions of 4 marks each.

• Following the successful submission of the application form, requests for category changes will not be accepted.
• The applicant's readiness to sit for the entrance exam depends on meeting the basic qualifying standards outlined in the IGNOU PhD course regulations.

The candidates must have Possesses a Master’s Degree from a University recognized by UGC or any other qualification recognized as equivalent thereto in such fields of study as are notified for the purpose from time to time by the University with at least 55% marks [50% marks in the case of SC, ST, OBC (Non-creamy Layer) and Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of UGC from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s Degree prior to 19th September 1991] excluding grace mark.

IGNOU PhD Education Admission Criteria

Students should have a minimum of  55% marks in their Masters and 50% marks for the non-creamy layer, differently-abled and other category of candidates in accordance with the decision of the UGC from time to time. The students are also required to qualify in the entrance exam conducted by IGNOU at the national level.

IGNOU PhD Education Admission Guidelines 

The selection is done on the basis of the written test followed by an interview. Applications found suitable for admission will be called for the entrance test. Shortlisted candidates on the basis of their performance in the written test will be called for the interview round. Offer letters for admission will be sent to the Selected Candidates only.

Note: Candidates holding M.Phil. Degree (along with course work and dissertation both) or those candidates who have cleared NET (conducted by UGC/ CSIR/ ICAR) or any other equivalent examination will be exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test.

Entrance Test

• The list of shortlisted candidates who will be required to appear for the Entrance Test will be displayed on the IGNOU website.
• The admit card will also be released on the official website of IGNOU one week prior of the exam date.
• Candidates must bring their admit card to the exam center, else they will not allow sitting for the written test.
• Applicants have to bring an original identity proof having a photograph, such as Aadhar Card, Voter ID Card, Driving License, Passport and ID card at the examination center.
• Students must score a minimum of 50% marks in the entrance test to qualify the exam.
• The Entrance Test will be held in 13 cities. 

Interview/ Presentation

• Qualified candidates in the written test will be called for interview round/ Presentation.
• Offer letters for admission will be sent to the Selected Candidates only.

Non Submission of Assignment

The TMA for each semester can be downloaded from the Student Zone of the University website. You have to complete the assignment within the due dates specified in the assignment booklet. You will not be allowed to appear for the term-end examination for any course if you do not submit the assignment in time for that course. If you appear in the term-end examination, without submitting the assignments, the result of the term-end examination is liable to be canceled.

Hello Vishal For Phd Ignou has only one Regional center that is Maidan garhi (head office). After selection you can opt for regular or distance depending on your needs, but they provide Phd only at one regional center.
