  • Diploma Thesis /

All students are required to complete a Diploma Thesis, which includes a substantial amount of work and a final written report on a well–defined project related to the scientific subjects of the ECE School. The diploma thesis is completed under the supervision of an (acting or emeritus or retired) professor of the School and monitored by a three-member thesis committee that comprises the supervisor plus two professors of the School. On a case-by-case basis, if the subject of the work requires it, up to one of the three committee members can be a Laboratory Teaching Staff member of the ECE School or an external scientist (indicatively, professor or designated assistant professor or designated lecturer or researcher of a recognized academic or research institution in Greece or abroad or industry executive), as long as he holds a Doctorate Degree. The thesis title, supervisor, and committee are assigned by the Assembly, upon an application by the student, provided that the proposed supervising professor has agreed. The thesis is usually assigned during the last two semesters studies (9th and 10th).

Thesis Assignment

For the Diploma Thesis assignment, the Assembly of the School has established a three-member Diploma Thesis Assignment Committee, which has the control and responsibility for uniform distribution of Diploma Theses among the professors of the School. The Committee comprises faculty members from different scientific areas and has a two-year term. At present, as decided by the 8th/22-06-2023 meeting of the Dean's Office of the School, the Committee consists of Prof. K. Gyftakis, A. Dollas, and G. Chalkiadakis and its term ends on June 22, 2025.

The Committee mainly focuses on the cases of students that are unable to identify a Diploma Thesis topic in direct consultation with professors of the School. Moreover, after the approval of the thesis title and supervisor by the Assembly, the Committee will regularly update the data base of the (instant and aggregate) thesis supervision load of the faculty members, in an effort to attain uniform distribution of Diploma Theses among the professors of the School.

Diploma Theses topics that are mutually agreed upon by the students and professors do not require approval by the Committee; the applications are submitted throughout the academic year. That is, the student who agrees on a Diploma Thesis with a professor submits an application for Diploma Thesis title, supervisor, and three-member committee approval by the Assembly.

For students who a) have not been assigned a Diploma Thesis topic and b) on August 25 of the academic year owe a maximum of five (5) courses for the completion of the study program, the following procedure applies.

  • Students who wish to be assigned a Diploma Thesis topic must send, between Aug. 25 and Sept. 15, to the Committee a request for Diploma Thesis assignment.
  • The Committee takes into account the total number of applications and the Diploma Theses load of professors and asks professors (who have room to supervise) to determine a certain number of proposed topics. Instead of a specific topic, the professor may provide a broader scientific area and the topic may be specified along the way. The list of subjects or scientific areas is communicated to students at the end of the September examination period (early October).
  • A period of one month is provided (specifically, Oct. 15 - Nov. 15) during which interested students are invited to contact the professors who have proposed topics to discuss and be informed about the requirements of each topic. If during the discussions there is an agreement between the student and the professor, then the student submits an application to the Assembly for Diploma Thesis title, supervisor, and three-member committee assignment.
  • For students who have not decided on a topic in the above period, a period of 2 weeks (specifically, Nov. 15 - Nov. 30) is provided during which they send to the Committee a list of 3 preferred topics from the available proposed ones and their transcript.
  • At the end of November the Committee examines the preferences of the students and their performance in the courses and assigns them to the professors in the best possible way. Then, the student submits an application to the Assembly for Diploma Thesis title, supervisor, and three-member committee assignment. For students who were not assigned a topic from their preferences as well as for students who did not submit a list of preferred topics, the Diploma Thesis topic will be assigned based on their academic performance, the courses in which they have the highest grades, and the availability of professors, provided that they owe a maximum of one (1) compulsory and a maximum of two (2) electives compulsory courses for the completion of the study program.

Thesis Completion

Following its completion, the Diploma Thesis is presented to open audience and is graded by the three-member Diploma Thesis committee. The presentation of a Diploma Thesis can be done anytime throughout the academic year. In all cases, the Diploma Thesis presentation must take place within twenty (20) days from the end of an examination period, to receive a diploma degree in the graduation that follows that examination period. The exact date, time, and place of the presentation and the examination are determined in cooperation with the members of the three-member Diploma Thesis committee that grades the work and are publicly announced together with the title and summary of the work to all members of the Technical University of Crete.

The presentation and examination of the thesis is allowed only after completion of the student's obligations regarding the courses of the study program that are required to obtain a diploma and only after at least five (5) months from the thesis assignment by the Assembly.

If the duration of a Diplomatic Thesis exceeds one year, then, unless there is written notification to the Committee that the student and the supervisor agree on its extension, a specific date is set for its presentation and examination within one month. The student must present what he has done up to that day and is graded accordingly. For Diploma Theses that have been assigned by the Assembly before July 7, 2023, the one-year period starts from July 7, 2023.

Thesis Grade

Each diploma thesis is graded in the 0-10 scale by taking the average of the grades given by the three committee members to each of the following three criteria with the corresponding percentages: quality of technical content (50%), quality of written report (30%), and quality of oral presentation (20%).

In case of collaborative work among two or more students, which is allowed only following the approval of the School’s General Assembly, each student is graded separately for his/her contribution to the diploma thesis and his/her oral presentation.

Department of Electronic Engineering

Diploma thesis.

According to the regulations applicable to the Department of Electronic Engineering, the preparation of a diploma thesis by students following the 5-year Undergraduate Studies Program (BAS) is mandatory and is credited with 30 ECTS credits. The preparation of the thesis aims to:

  • for students to delve deeper into topics of their interest, acquiring knowledge and skills that will help them in their future development and career,
  • in familiarizing students with scientific thinking and methodology, the overview of existing knowledge, and the research effort,
  • in giving students the opportunity to broaden their thinking and seek innovation,
  • in giving students the opportunity to come into contact with cutting-edge research topics, always depending on their interests, which is highly encouraged in the Department of Electronic Engineering.

By completing the dissertation, students will have developed and improved their skills:

  • in the structured search of scientific sources, and in the bibliographic review,
  • in the clear formulation of a scientific problem, and in the organization and design of the methodology for dealing with it,
  • in the collection of data, their processing, their presentation, and the drawing of conclusions for the interpretation of phenomena,
  • in solving problems related to the subject of Electronic Engineering,
  • in writing scientific texts and presenting them to a wide audience.

Diploma thesis assignment and preparation procedures The preparation of a diploma thesis requires that the student has successfully attended 36 of the 48 courses of the first 8 semesters. In the 10th semester, typically, the student chooses and prepares his diploma thesis, with a typical preparation duration of six months. In the Department of Electronic Engineering, and for the convenience of students, it is possible and recommended to choose a thesis topic from the 9th semester of studies. All diploma theses in the Department of Electronic Engineering are to a lesser or greater degree research, and are prepared under the supervision and research guidance of a faculty member of the Department. After each examination period, the lecturers (Members of the Faculty-EDIP-ETEP, Young Scientists for the Acquisition of Teaching Experience, Teachers PD 407/80, and Academic Scholars) suggest topics for diploma theses. The Department Assembly ensures that a sufficient number of topics are announced, so that students have the option of choosing. The interested students, after consultation with the lecturer of the subject, request the undertaking of a thesis on a specific subject, with their application to the Secretariat, which is countersigned by the lecturer of the subject. As long as there is a joint decision between the Departments, thesis supervision can be assigned to Faculty Members or appointed lecturers of another Department of the same or another School, or to Faculty Members of Departments of other Universities. Typically, the thesis topic is assigned to a single student. In the event that two or more students express their interest in the same thesis topic, it is within the jurisdiction of the supervising lecturer who suggested the topic to choose the student to whom it will be assigned. However, in special cases where there is a clear distinction between the individual tasks and after the recommendation of the supervisor, the same thesis can be assigned to two or more students. Then there are examples of the documents that must be filled in to start preparing the diploma thesis. Upon their submission, the decision / final approval is given by the Assembly of the Department. The official start date of the thesis is defined as the date that the Department Assembly approved the submitted thesis assignment proposal. A student who undertook the preparation of a diploma thesis under the supervision of a specific teacher, may, with a reasoned request, request (once) to change the topic. Also, again after clear justification and written request, the subject/title of the thesis can be modified to the extent that the original description is not substantially altered. In the event of the need for substantial changes arising in the course of preparation of the thesis, a written request must be submitted in a timely manner by the supervisor in consultation with the student. To facilitate the writing of the thesis, the Department defines a template in the form of an electronic text processing file, which is posted on the Department’s website, after it has been approved by the Assembly. In addition, explicit instructions for writing the thesis, as well as a guide for writing bibliographic references, are posted on the Department’s website.

Supervision – Obligations of supervisors and students All members of the teaching staff who independently teach courses in the 5-year PPS of the Department, have the possibility to undertake the supervision/supervision of a diploma thesis on topics related to their subject and research interests. The supervisor undertakes to direct the student throughout the preparation of the thesis on the basis of a clear schedule and to assist him in all stages of the preparation of the thesis: (i) in the initial planning and approach to the topic, (ii) in the bibliography review, (iii) solving the specific problem, (iv) processing the data, (v) drawing the relevant conclusions, and (vi) writing and presenting the thesis. Students must cooperate with their supervisors at regular intervals, keep them informed of any problems and difficulties that arise, be consistent with the timetables set, and not exert undue pressure. In general, the role of the supervisor is advisory, and the students themselves should develop the necessary initiatives, since regardless of the degree of contribution of the supervisor, the responsibility for the quality of the thesis is primarily the responsibility of the student who prepares it, and secondarily the supervisor who proposes and supervises her.

Completion procedures – Evaluation After completing the thesis, and with the supervisor’s approval, the student submits his thesis to the Secretariat in electronic format. The Assembly appoints a Three-member Examination Committee from Members of the Department’s permanent and temporary teaching staff for its evaluation. The evaluation process includes the presentation of the thesis by the student to a wide audience. Presentations of theses can be organized in groups on fixed dates at least 4 times a year, and can be attended by all members of the academic community of the Department (teachers and students), as well as visitors.

Depending on the topic and the particularities of each thesis, the main evaluation criteria are indicatively:

  • updating existing knowledge with appropriate bibliographic research,
  • the correct presentation of bibliographic sources,
  • constructing and solving or simulating the problem,
  • the acquisition of data as a result of a theoretical calculation, or an experimental process, or their mining/collection;
  • the computer processing of the collected data,
  • the tests, applications and evaluation of results,
  • its structure and written presentation (coherence of the text, correct use of terminology and language, precise formulation of concepts, compliance with writing standards),
  • the scientifically correct documentation of the conclusions,
  • the zeal and initiatives taken by the student during the preparation, and
  • the oral presentation of the thesis.

The weighting factors of the above indicative criteria vary according to the nature of the subject and the assessments of the Examining Committee, whose members judge and score independently at their discretion. The grade of the thesis results from the average score of the members of the Committee. The minimum passing grade is 5 (five). The members of the Committee complete and submit to the Secretariat a relevant evaluation record, which includes the name of the student, the title of the thesis and the final grade. If a DE is deemed incomplete, it is referred for additional processing and returned for examination. All completed DEs are compulsorily deposited in the University’s institutional repository in accordance with the institutional repository policy, which is approved by the Senate. The submission of assignments by students is mandatory and is controlled by the Department Secretariat.

Ethics – Reservation of rights – Plagiarism The copyright of the thesis, according to the written provisions, belongs to those who contributed to its preparation (Institution, Department, supervisor, student). In the event that the scientific results of the work are patented, the current legislation applies to the owners of the rights arising from it. What is mentioned in the text of the thesis does not necessarily mean that they are identified or accepted by the Department. In any case, reference should be made to the authors of the paper, the title of the paper and the Department. All parties involved in the preparation of a DE are committed to comply with the Rules of Academic Conduct, as established by the Institution’s Ethics Committee. Plagiarism, in the sense of appropriating the intellectual property of others, often in the form of the author’s presentation, intentionally or unintentionally, of another person’s work, is condemned by the EM Department, and is not only a moral offense, but also violates copyright law. copyright and may result in legal penalties. Sources should always be clearly cited, whether this is text or unpublished ideas and opinions. Other actions that violate the codes of academic ethics and integrity, and are also reprehensible, include delegating part or all of an assignment to someone else, copying the work of others across the board, collaborating with students on an assignment without the supervisor’s knowledge. In connection with the previous points, each student should make it clear in the text of the DE what is the product of his own work and what is the product of another person’s work, making systematic reference to references and placing them where they should.

Diploma Thesis Writing

Steps to be completed.

The diploma thesis is one of the essential parts of the study, in which each student demonstrates the ability to think independently and analyse problems . Therefore, it is necessary to pay great attention to the elaboration of the final thesis and to follow the rules that determine its formal and content requirements.

When you violate the established rules (whether intentionally or through negligence), you risk obtaining "N" from subjects related to the creation of the final thesis. These are the courses Diploma thesis assignment and Diploma Seminar 1 and 2 . You will then be classified by "F" from the final thesis defence. At the same time, the Dean may impose a disciplinary sanction on you, specifically expulse you from studies.

According to the Schedule of the Academic Year , the student selects the topic of his/her thesis first, choosing from a Package of Topics . You find the topics in your IS profile (Student - During studies - Topic List) or you can use the Help section of IS here . Think of the topic of your diploma thesis very well - if your study programme has specializations, your topic must be connected to the specialization you chose.

In order to help students with the creation of the final thesis, the faculty implemented a system of courses that allows good cooperation with the supervisor. Students enrol the course Diploma thesis assignment in the 2nd semester of their Master's degree programme ( provided that you plan to complete the study in the standard length of study of 4 semesters ) .

1. Course Diploma thesis assignment

  • The course is offered in the spring semester to students whose studies began in the autumn semester. These students must choose a topic of their thesis in January before enrolment of the course Diploma thesis assignment.
  • Students whose studies began in the spring semester enrol the course Diploma thesis assignment in the autumn semester. These students must choose a topic of their thesis in September before enrolment for the course.
  • The Diploma thesis assignment is stored in the student's IS profile and later creates an inseparable part of the diploma thesis.

Students receive credits based on the submission of the diploma thesis assignment.

The course is not scheduled.

2. Course Diploma seminar 1

  • Students are obliged to enrol on this course in the third semester of their studies.

3. Course Diploma seminar 2

  • Students are obliged to enrol on this course in the fourth semester of their studies.

Students are allowed to take the Final state examination only if they receive credits for all three courses.

Consultations for students

The library at the FEA offers individual consultations for students on their written school work in the context of the technical requirements of academic writing.

Submission & defence

The rules for the Bachelor's or Diploma thesis defence and submission are governed by the MU Study and Examinations Regulations (Section 22, paragraph 2), 3) and 4) and DIRECTIVE No 9/2019 (Section 5).

The Bachelor's or Diploma final thesis must be uploaded in your archive in the MU Information System (the procedure to follow when entering the final work is described in the MU Information System ) to a date set by the Academic year schedule. The secretary of your department is supervising the correct form of the thesis.

Versions of thesis

Only the electronic version of the thesis is required for the purposes of long-term archiving and it is also used as a base document to draft its assessment and report. You do not need to submit the printed version.  Please, follow the webpages of the faculty for the actual information on the form of the FSE.

Only in the event of the unsuccessful thesis defence at the state examination when the examination board rates your thesis with the „F“ grading , may you make changes to your thesis or write a brand new one and submit it the newly created archive – your previous final thesis will, however, remain deposited in the MU IS. The basic rules of thesis writing, submission and defence are governed by the MU Study and Examinations Regulations (Chapter V, Sections 31, 33 and 34).

Changes in uploaded thesis

A copy once submitted may not be handled in any way, it is not possible to make any alterations to it, whether formal or content-specific.

Non-public Data

Should the final thesis contain data and information (e.g. company accounting or data subject to a trade secret) which may not be publicised...

What to do?

Students are required to conclude an agreement with the data provider, the binding template of which can be found in Appendix No. 3 of DIRECTIVE No 9/2019 .

This signed agreement is part of the Application for making part of the diploma work non-public , which is submitted by the student in the Document office in the IS at least 30 days prior to the submission deadline:

IS MU – Student – Document office – Submitting new application – Application for making part of the diploma work non-public .

Further students have to divide the work into two sections to make it possible for some parts of the text to be publicised and for other parts to remain stored in a non-public archive. Usually, it is divided into a theoretical part (which is publishable) and practical part (which is considered as non-public). These parts need to be properly named so the administrator knows what part is supposed to be hidden.

Students enter their thesis in its entirety in your MU IS archive, but divided into individual files including the non-public sections as mentioned above. We recommend that on thesis submission you ask the administrator of the international office to tick the concealment of the required files (should you fail to do so, all the parts will become publicly accessible on thesis submission).

The ultimate decision on which parts are to be concealed is, however, made by the thesis supervisor. It is advisable to discuss the extent of concealment with the supervisor beforehand. This may even be included in the thesis assignment. In any case, it is essential that the parts intended for publication contain a clear statement of the thesis goals and results including the reasons for non-publication of some of its parts.

Formal rules of thesis writing

The formal arrangement, length, font type and size, chapter structure, manner of printing and binding, submission, etc.; are governed by DIRECTIVE No 9/2019 which refers to the norm regulating the bibliographic references (ČN ISO 690). Students are required to read the Directive and not later than from 2020/2021 use the presented template.

Official description

The Bachelor's or Diploma thesis includes its Official description . The binding Thesis Description is deposited in the MU IS and its printed form signed by the Dean acts as a supplement to the Final examination record (the printed version is stored in the International office).

It is your responsibility to include in the electronic as well as printed form of your thesis the Thesis Description which may be downloaded from the following MU IS application:

Student – End of Studies – Print Thesis Desription.

The Description included in the thesis does not include the signatures.

The gravest violation of rules of thesis writing (the greatest offence in the academic world in general) is constituted by plagiarism , i.e. a theft or fraudulent adoption of intellectual property of another. Plagiarism by its definition is always perceived as an intentionally committed offence . It is in your own interest to fully familiarize yourselves with the definition of plagiarism and with the binding rules of source acknowledgement (i.e. quoting the sources of adopted passages and ideas) which are governed by DIRECTIVE No 9/2019 .

Teachers (thesis supervisors) and supervisors are obliged to inspect adherence to these rules and ask the Dean to initiate disciplinary proceedings with a student in question. The Faculty disciplinary board is guided by the Disciplinary Code and the proceedings may even result in an unconditional expulsion from the study programme. There is a tool in the IS MU called „Vejce vejci“ (Find similar documents) which you can use to check your work for plagiarism. You just need to upload your work in your IS Depository and use the „Vejce vejci“ tool (it is a symbol of 2 eggs). The similar parts of the text are then highlighted.

Department of Experimental Biology

Topics of theses.

Members of the department actively participate in the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students as supervisors of their bachelor's, diploma and dissertation theses. Topics cover a wide range from analytical, organic and medicinal chemistry, through biochemistry to cellular and structural biology. They are especially suitable for students of experimental biology, but we can offer topics for other related fields of study (biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, biotechnology and genetic engineering, bioorganic chemistry and chemical biology). After completing the qualification work, students should be able to independently solve the problem of preparation of new organic compounds, study their properties, analyze the relationships between the structure and biological activity and understand the research of biologically active substances in terms of their synthesis or molecular effects.

The selection of theses supervised by members of the department in the last 2-3 years below can serve as a guide for students in choosing their supervisor and topic. The full texts of the defended theses are available on request from the supervisor, via the IS / STAG UP information system or in the theses.cz database.

Hi, well, I am from Slovakia - in my country it is used interchangeably but I don't know whether it would be correct to call the thesis "Diploma thesis" in an abstract that is intended to be read by an international community, I guess....

In the United States, I would call that a Master's thesis, if it meets the requirements for a Master's degree. I haven't heard of a "Diploma thesis," to be honest.

I see. For me it was tempting to use it as in our language we call it "diplomová práca." But I chcecked the Oxford collocation dict. which lists only Master's, as well. So I will only use Master's in the future. Thank you.

I think a diploma is different from a Master's degree. If we accept that, it follows that the two terms are not interchangeable. A diploma is lower in academic status than a Master's degree. For example, after completing a first degree (say a BA Honours), someone might take the PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma of Education) to be qualified as a teacher. The PGDE is a diploma, and there might be an extended bit of writing - perhaps called a long essay, or perhaps a dissertation, or perhaps a thesis. This person might then take an MA course which also involves a dissertation or a thesis. The diploma thesis would be the one written for the diploma, and the Master's thesis for the MA.

thank you very much for the detailed answer, natkretep!

I know this is an older post, but I think it is important to note for Slovak students, who will see this page in the future, that what we call a diploma thesis in Slovakia is used to achieve a degree equal to a master's degree. In other words, I believe that in Slovakia it is appropriate to use the phrase "Master's thesis". If the phrase "diploma thesis" is internationally used to refer to a lower degree than a master's, then it shouldn't be used as a translation for "Diplomová práca".

I am from the USA, and to be honest, I haven't ever heard "Diploma thesis", we only use "Master's thesis"

In the US, below "master's degree" (MS or MA) is "Bachelor's degree" (BS or BA). Students get a BS or BA after 4 years of university study. After they get the BA or BA degree, they can enroll in a Master's degree program. This takes 1 or 2 years, after which they receive a Master's degree. A Master's degree requires a thesis, but so do most Bachelor's degrees. So the Master's thesis is the second thesis for a student, after the Bachelor's thesis. Neither degree is called a "diploma" in the US. The term "diploma" is a general one for a certificate (piece of paper) showing graduation. The most common one is "a high school diploma", which is awarded after grade 12, before starting university study.

“How to Write a Diploma Thesis” – Open Lecture

  • March 31, 2022

The goal of this lecture was to clarify, simplify, and promote excellence in the writing and presentation of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. Preparing a Diploma Thesis is the last essential step in a student’s academic career. Dr. Enriko Ceko guided participants through each stage of the process, from developing an idea to acquiring information, hypotheses creation, thesis writing, reviewing, revising, and printing the diploma thesis. Students interacted with one another throughout the session, and it was fascinating to hear about their creative thinking and practical skills developed during their studies, as well as how they applied their academic knowledge. We are thankful to Dr. Enriko Ceko, a respected CIT professor, for sharing his expertise and passion for education with the next generation!

Bachelor's Diploma Thesis

Length of the Bachelor's Diploma Thesis: no less than 65,000 characters (the required minimum, including spaces) and typically no more than 85,000 characters, depending on the nature of the thesis.

The length includes footnotes, endnotes and bibliography. It does not include the title pages, table of contents, acknowledgments and appendices.

Students in the minor study plan (vedlejší studijní plán) do not write a thesis in this Department.

The deadlines for diploma thesis submission are:

For autumn semester, the deadline is set to November 30 (state exam in January/February) For spring semester, the deadline is set to April 30 (state exam in June)

Stylesheet formatting: The preferred stylesheet is Chicago Manual of Style, footnote version (CMOS), and APA for theses in Literary/Cultural Studies and Linguistis/Methodology/Translation studies, respectively. However, if you were trained in MLA , and implementing any other stylesheet would result in erroneous results, please stick to the stylesheet that you are familiar with at this point. It is not necessary to put more pressure on you when you need to focus on the contect quality in the first place. Please, inform your supervisor about the used stylesheet in case you are going to use MLA rather that CMOS or APA. It is important to stick to one selected stylesheet throughout the thesis.

The form of submission: Besides electronic submission (into your thesis archive and also to the homework vault in the course of Diploma Thesis) it is also necessary to hand in one hard copy (spiral binding or “termovazba” is enough) at the department secretary office.

Template for the Diploma Thesis

Students are encouraged to ask for clarification if they are unsure and seek guidance on variances from these norms.

The regular length of this programme of studies is six semesters. Therefore, you should primarily devote the sixth semester to writing the Bachelor's Diploma Thesis. However, the process of writing must be preceded by extensive research and preparation. You should manage the research by the end of the semester prior to the last one, i.e. the fifth one.

  • If you are planning to finish your studies in the sixth semester, you must decide on the field of your Thesis at the beginning of of the FIFTH semester of your studies. At this point, see the professor whom you wish to be your supervisor and discuss your topic and the idea. Then enter your topic into the IS (Student > V průběhu semestru > Rozpisy témat > Bakalářská > Témata: založit).
  • In the FIFTH semester of your studies, register for AJL19800 (Bachelor's Thesis Seminar) in the IS. You will only be signed up for this course after if you have got the agreement from the supervisor and the topic in the IS. During this semester, you will do your research and work on your thesis proposal. By the end of this semester, you should know precisely what you will deal with in your Thesis, and have done most of the research and reading. To be able to do this, be sure to SEE YOUR SUPERVISOR REGULARLY to assist you.
  • In the SIXTH (i.e. the last) semester, register for AJL19801 (Bachelor's Thesis Seminar II) and AJ19850 (Bachelor's Diploma Thesis) in the IS. Start writing the Thesis as soon as possible and see your supervisor regularly. Remember: it is difficult and time consuming to produce a Thesis! You should think about your writing schedule in the terms of months rather than days or weeks. If you are graduating in the Spring semester, the deadline is set by the Faculty to April 30 (for defense in June). Lately this deadline was shifted to mid-May; if you are graduating in the Fall semester, the deadline is November 30 (defense in January or February). Lately this deadline was shifted to mid-December. Theses submitted after the deadline will not be accepted (it is possible to submit a petition for a postponed deadline, but only serious reasons will be considered, such as a long study stay abroad or serious illness).
  • All three seminars (AJL19800, AJL19801) and the Thesis itself (AJL19850) are graded with credit ("zápočet" = Z) in the IS. You will get a "Z" for the Seminar I in the IS if you pass the assignments in the E-course in ELF. You will get a "Z"  for the Seminar II in the IS for regularly consultation with your supervisor and submiting chapters to him/her. You will get a "Z" for the Thesis in the IS if you fulfill the formal criteria as set by the Faculty and the Department (see above). You will receive a grade after a defense. Prior to the defense, you will get a report from the second reader (if it is negative, you will get a report from the supervisor, too). You will then defend the Thesis as a part of the State Examination before a committee (supervisor, second reader, the chairperson) and receive a grade which will then appear on your diploma.

After changing her major several times—from Spanish to philosophy and to art history—CSU Bakersfield student Haydee Barahona found her passion as a communications major when she fell in love with her first journalism class, Issues and Practices in Journalism.

“I've always wanted to do something where I could serve the people in my community, and it wasn't until I took this journalism class that I realized that this could actually help a lot of people," Barahona said. “Being a student [at CSUB] has changed the trajectory of my career plans and how I see my future."

During her academic career, Barahona was a major contributor to CSUB's student newspaper, “ The Runner ," working her way from social media manager to editor-in-chief. She also helped establish " El Veloz ," the Spanish version of “The Runner," to connect the Latinx community with news on the campus. Under Barahona's leadership, the paper received many state and national awards, including first place in the Best Newspaper Inside/Spread Design category at the California College Media Association 's 2024 Excellence in Student Media Awards.

Barahona was named an outstanding student for 2024 by CSUB's School of Arts and Humanities and received the university's President's Medal , an honor granted to just one undergraduate and one graduate student each year.

After graduation, she will pursue her master's in journalism at UC Berkeley, and plans to eventually return to Kern County to report on Latinx communities.

Determined San Diego State graduate Richard German has overcome obstacles to pursue his passion for sustainability and accessibility. German, who was born with cerebral palsy, was inspired to earn a degree in sustainability after encountering widespread litter on his commutes using public transit and having to clean it off his wheelchair.

SDSU sustainability lecturer Savanna Schuermann has played a pivotal role in German's academic journey by helping him manage his coursework and find an internship with San Diego Strike Force , a professional indoor football team.

The internship, which included conducting surveys of the organization as an informant from the disabled community, merged his passions for sustainability, sports and accessibility. As part of the internship, German shared his experiences with accessibility at San Diego sports venues and presented a proposal to the builders of the Oceanside San Diego Sockers stadium recommending features that would make the stadium ADA-compliant.

In addition, the SDSU Office of Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach and Success honored German with the Outstanding Persistence Award for how he supports fellow students with disabilities on campus.

Post-graduation, German plans to continue advocating for disability rights and creating an inclusive future for students with disabilities.

At 15 years old, Vedagna Sarabu is the youngest graduate from Cal State LA's Class of 2024, earning her bachelor's degree in criminal justice with a minor in law and society. This degree is a steppingstone in her pursuit to become a lawyer and provide legal assistance to her community.

“Growing up, I have observed family and friends who struggled emotionally and financially with legal issues, so my goal is to be trained and equipped to help people navigate through the legal system," she said.

Sarabu enrolled in Cal State LA's Early Entrance Program at 11 years old. For her senior thesis, she compiled and organized a dataset of first-person testimonies of former residents of MacLaren Hall, a Los Angeles group home that was closed in 2003 amid allegations of abuse. Sarabu hopes to make a difference for future youth in similar shelters by determining what could have been improved.

Sarabu has received a full-ride scholarship to pursue a Juris Doctor degree at Chapman University.

In rural Bakersfield, rainfall often makes roads impassable, blocking travel to school or work. This dilemma inspired Cal State Fullerton student Annabelle Recinos to follow in her engineer father's footsteps and earn a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Recino's goal is to become an independent researcher of transportation and improve infrastructure material for roads and bridges.

“I want to reduce the impacts and costs rural residents face when roads become unsafe to drive on from aging or maintenance issues," Recinos said.

With four associate degrees from Bakersfield College, the first-generation student transferred to CSUF in 2021.

Recinos participated in the university's Ronald E. McNair Scholar's Program , through which she investigated the materials used in the transportation industry. She won first place at a Purdue research competition, presented her work at state and national conferences and was awarded a $10,000 fellowship from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration. With her faculty adviser, Pratanu Ghosh, she was published in “ Materials Today: Proceedings ," an international scientific journal.

With a full-ride scholarship, Recinos will pursue her master's and doctoral degrees in civil engineering at Oregon State in the fall.

Negin Ghaffari is a first-generation student and the 2024 outstanding graduate student from Cal State San Bernardino's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Having immigrated from Iran at a young age, the psychological sciences master's student became interested in learning about individuals' behaviors and exploring human resilience.

“I am interested to know how mental and physical health is connected to early life stressors and health-related behaviors," Ghaffari said. “In particular, I want to explore resilience factors among individuals who have experienced early life stressors and how that may have impacted their mental and physical health outcomes."

As one of seven recipients of the CSU's Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholarship , Ghaffari worked with faculty mentor and dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Christina Hassija on projects related to trauma and resiliency.

Prior to her time at CSUSB, Ghaffari earned her bachelor's degree at CSUN, where she worked as a research assistant implementing interventions for potential problem behaviors, and completed a postbaccalaureate program at UC Irvine, exploring resilience factors associated with childhood experiences.

Over the summer, Ghaffari will work at Yale University's PRIME lab, and in August, she will begin a doctoral program in clinical psychology at the University of Mississippi. Ghaffari plans to become a professor and establish a nonprofit mental health community clinic where she will use her education to benefit the community.

Kirsten Welch

Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering

Kirsten Welch stands in front of building and smiles

Chico State engineering graduate Kirsten Welch. (Photo courtesy Jason Halley/Chico State)

Kirsten Welch set her sights on becoming an engineer while in high school. As a high school senior, Welch shadowed undergraduates and conducted research with faculty at Chico State's Materials Testing Lab. With dreams of becoming a weapons designer, she enrolled in Chico State's mechanical engineering program.

Welch immediately involved herself in engineering opportunities, including participating in Chico State's SAE Baja team, a collegiate competition in which teams design and construct off-road cars.

After graduation, she will participate in a summer internship, for the third time, at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, though it took her several applications before she was accepted. Finally, she will begin graduate school in the fall at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to conduct explosives research.

“I've always been driven," she said. “I never wanted to be afraid of rejection because that's part of the process. So, I would just tell students to go for it. The worst thing they can say is no, but the best thing they can say is yes."
