1996 Dharmapuri review: A brutal rural drama centred on love and politics

Director Jagath’s understanding of rural politics at a grass-root level is matched by his ability to weave a good drama and extract impressive performances from his cast

In Dharmapuri, a village in Telangana, Suri is a youngster who works loyally for the sarpanch. His parents are eager to find him a match despite his reluctance. When he meets Malli at a private function, he instantly falls for her. Malli, who takes to beedi-making for a living, soon finds herself attracted to Suri. There’s opposition from several corners for their marriage but they’re determined to stay together. Just when it seems like a ‘happy-ever-after’ tale, Suri goes missing. Is Suri safe? How does Malli deal with his absence?

Films like 1996 Dharmapuri can be made when an insider gets to tell the story of his soil with conviction and paint a picture of reality minus any sugar-coating. The first thing you notice in the film is the authenticity of the directorial voice. Director Jagath knows his backdrop in and out, where his characters hail from, right from their behaviour to their language and their cultural roots. It’s this understanding of the ambience sans judgement that lends credibility to the drama, despite its familiar beats.

1996 Dharmapuri, in its first hour, is fashioned more like a Romeo-Juliet tale. While establishing the social situation of the village, the story talks of the many roadblocks the couple faces from their families for marriage and how the sarpanch stands up for them, come what may. An interesting interval block turns the story on its head and the focus shifts to the rural politics over Suri and Malli’s romance. The storytelling is almost deceptive, but it keeps you hooked to the screens.

The director Jagath uses romance as a tool to explore the ruthlessness of village politics. The story is about politics, yes, and as much about human greed. There’s enough tension in the narrative when Suri goes missing from his home and through this incident, you get to see the true picture of the village beneath the facade. The emotions are raw and the narration is focused without any forced subplots. Most of the pivotal characters have an identity and you get to hear their side of the story.

As a plot, 1996 Dharmapuri may not offer anything out of the box, but one must acknowledge it as an important document of reality within Telugu states even today. Jagath packages the story smartly through the perspective of the couple and the fact that he sets up the story in 1996 offers the viewer an opportunity to pause, reflect and smell reality from a certain distance. Except for the climax, where vengeance and gore are almost celebrated, the intent is quite appreciable.

When the film ends, what stays with you are casual verbal banters among the villages, their raw sense of humour in the Karimnagar slang, the songs that women sing while they make beedis and how they blend music and performing traditions into every aspect of their lives. There's an earnestness in everything from the performances to the cinematography and the music. The absence of known faces is an advantage because it helps the director focus on the story and its characters more.

Gagaan Viharri is a fine talent who emotes well, has expressive body language and his dialogue delivery is one of his major strengths. Aparna Devi fits the part of a village belle to perfection. However, the film truly belongs to Janardhan (of Palasa fame) as the sarpanch and his heartfelt conversations with his wife are a delight to watch. The supporting cast comprising Keshav Sanam, Busstop Koteshwara Rao, Narayana Swamy, Shankar Kalyan, Ragini, Madhumitha, Jayaprada and others provide a good foundation for the narrative.

Osho Venkat’s music is a huge asset to the film and he makes an effort to capture the true soundscape of the region without forcing a commercial flavour into the songs. Krishna Prasad, the cinematographer, uses natural locations well to enhance the impact of the visuals while Marthand K Venkatesh’s experience on the editing front is quite visible in the compact yet coherent narrative.

Full marks to the director Jagath for attempting to tell a story like the 1996 Dharmapuri but like most Telugu films, it puts the caste angle on the back burner. Lines addressed to the sarpanch (by the villagers), like, “we want you as a leader for the next 100 years,” don’t appear in good taste. Yet, that doesn’t make 1996 Dharmapuri any less of an achievement.

1996 Dharmapuri is an engaging rural drama narrated with the authenticity of an insider. The director Jagath uses cinematic liberties efficiently to paint an accurate picture of the reality in villages. Gagaan Viharri, Aparna Devi and Janardhan come up with impressive performances while Osho Venkat’s music stands out as well.

A small film titled, 1996 Dharmapuri starring Gagan Vihari and Aparna Devi as the lead pair created curiosity with its promotional stuff. Directed by Viswa Jagath, the film has hit the screens today. Let’s analyze it.

Dharmapuri is a rural village drama that revolves around the love story of Suri(Gagan Vihaari) and Malli(Aparna Devi). Suri who is the son of the village sarpanch loves Malli who also has a political backdrop. After repeated trials, Suri impresses Malli and they both decide to marry with the acceptance of family members. But as a major twist in the narrative, Suri goes missing on his marriage day. Where will Suri go? What is the role of Malli in the entire episode? Will Suri and Malli reunite again, forms the rest of the tale.

On-screen performances:

Both Gagan Vihaari and Aparna Devi gave a convincing performance. While Gagan Vihaari did his village character with so much ease, Aparna Devi did her part effortlessly.

Gagan Vihaari is good with his acting and dance movements in a situational love song. Aparna Devi carries the half-saree attire nicely and adds a fresh vibe to the screen with her screen presence. Her dialogue delivery in Telangana accent elevates a couple of key scenes. The romantic episodes between the lead pair are executed in an authentic manner.

Other actors who did supporting roles did their part quite effectively.

Off-screen talents:

Music by Osho Venkat is good as his background and songs are a major plus for this rural drama. The cinematography work by Krishna Prasad is apt for the film’s genre. His framing and lighting setup elevates the rustic flavour in the film nicely.

While the dialogues written by Viswa Jagath are good, as a director he succeeded to an extent in showcasing this village drama on a proper note.

Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh is good as he kept the runtime of the film within limits by ignoring the unwanted episodes in the narrative. Choreography by Sekhar VJ for one love song is nice and has a fresh concept. Production values by Dasari Bhaskar Yadav’s banner are decent.

Positive Points:

• Performances by the lead pair
• Twists and turns

Negative Points:

• Routine template storyline
• The pace of the film in the first half

In an overview, Dharmapuri is a love story set in a village backdrop and interlinked with small-town politics. The performance of the lead pair, and the twists and turns revealed in the second half are good. On the flip side, the lack of a strong storyline and the usual commerciality we see in Telugu films come as a demerit for the film. All we suggest is to keep a check on your expectations and watch Dharmapuri and it will surely end up as a one-time watch this weekend.

Review: Gods Of Dharmapuri on Zee5 is a Stylish But Simplistic Tale of the Mining Mafia

When the two children arrive at Dharmapuri, with their father and mother, the first question the younger child asks is if there will be a cinema theatre where they are going to live? Cinema is important here, and not just because the film is set in Andhra Pradesh where the histrionic heroism of movie stars spilled onto the political arena, actors becoming politicians and even chief ministers, capturing both the imagination and desperation of the masses. 

Cinema is also a way for us, the audience, to know which year we are in. When Amar Akbar Anthony posters are put up near the talkies, we know we are somewhere in the late 70s. It's ingenious and well within the universe of these characters who seek both solace and redemption as spectators. The younger one, Ravi, who sneaks in to catch movies, grows up to not only own the theater, but also use it as his harem, sleeping with willing 'whores' while the reels are running. The theater also becomes a space for holding political rivals hostage in violent circumstances; a nod to similar stories coming out of Kashmir, perhaps.  

This web show, spanning 10 episodes, and 2 generations, is the familiar study of greed and power. There aren't more layers here, but the show isn't pretending to hold any either. You could say it is an attempt to stylize Gangs of Wasseypur with a heavy filter of KGF sepia heroism. Pratap Reddy, a volatile hothead has emancipated the coal workers in the mine by replacing the earlier hierarchy with collective ownership. This sparks political ambitions in him as he is pitted against the local goon and head DN Reddy. 

From here a sprawling narrative involving communist opportunism, academic impotence, land rights, tabloid wars, brotherhood, family rivalry, and ultimately love emerges. Love for one's people, for one's family, for one's land. 

But what is more problematic is the narrative willingness to exploit the social issues of land rights and labour laws to set up characters, and then completely dismiss the issue itself.

When Pratap Reddy first dips his toes in the political pond, you wonder if he does so because of his desire to be cult worshipped, or if he truly wants to work for the betterment of the people. But then when you see him years later having become what he once fought against, you wonder two things. Was he, at the end of the day, an opportunist who craved power? Or, did the murky waters of politics make him like this- lethargic and violent? 

We learn that politics is as much about serving people, as it is about inflicting violence on them. It's a grim moral to take away but you take it as it is compellingly enacted. But soon, a fatigue sets in; the kind that comes after repeated exposure to simplistic storytelling. You cannot expect a story to hold the attention of a viewer over the course of 10 episodes, with an average length of 40 mins, if the only thing you can offer is a linear narrative that wobbles precariously on the drama of the supporting stories; the alcoholic and nympho-maniacal younger brother, the dutiful, caring, but shrewd and willfully cunning elder brother, the father who is perpetually angry, the mother who is perpetually weeping and feeding… it all tires. Partially because the characters are unable to evolve beyond their tagline description. But also because the synthetic nature of the circumstances begins to show as the cracks emerge. 

But what is more problematic is the narrative willingness to exploit the social issues of land rights and labour laws to set up characters, and then completely dismiss the issue itself. The coal mine that becomes the property of the masses- what happens to that? What happens to the labour laws promised by Pratap in his speeches? What do the communist leaders do when they are not plotting and prodding? Where is caste in all of this, something so enmeshed with class, that there must have been a conscious attempt to remove any trace of it from the narrative?

But of course, my qualms are more philosophical than visceral.

As a story it is largely engaging, and rarely frustrating (the subtitles, in places, are quite bad). What begins as a story of the mining mafia becomes a saga of fraying political dynasty-hood. The beats of the story are inherently dramatic, but in the hands of Anish Kuruvilla, it also becomes incredibly stylish, with vignette frames, yellow flares, and a rousing score. But is that it? We must hold products of our culture to a higher standing. My heart aches at the thought of what it could have become, but is content with what it is. I am hoping this becomes a template, not to copy, but to springboard from, onto better, more engaging, more layered, more entertaining stories.

The Telugu film Simbaa , featuring Jagapathi Babu and Anasuya Bharadwaj, finally hit theaters on August 9, 2024. Since its announcement, the film has generated a significant buzz among fans eagerly awaiting this crime thriller. As the film began its theatrical run, early viewers flooded social media with their reactions and reviews.

Directed by Murali Manohar, Simbaa also stars Gowtami, Vasista Simha, Srinath Maganti, Divi Vadthya, Anish Kuruvilla, and Kabir Singh. Krishna Saurabh composed the film’s music. Among others, Krishna Prasad handled the cinematography, while Tammiraju oversaw the editing.

Social media after the release of Simbaa, especially X (formerly Twitter), has been abuzz with audience reactions. One viewer expressed his unexpected reaction to the film and wrote , “First half surprised me to the core. Totally unexpected stuff. So, continuing the series of reviewing movies and shows during the lockdown period, our today’s pick is the Telugu web series Gods of Dharmapuri. This series is directed by Anish Kuruvilla and has Satyadev, LB Sriram, Chandni Chowdary in lead roles. It was released on 29th October and is now available on Zee 5.  

What’s it about :

Pratap Reddy, who belongs to Kadapa arrives in Dharmapuri along with his wife and kids to work as mining labor. As time passes by, he braves several life-threatening incidents and becomes the messiah of the masses dethroning feudal lord D N Reddy. But as time passes by, two of his sons who have issues of their own get into various problems creating tension in Dharmapuri. The rest of the story is as to what happens to them in this big bad world of power and jealousy.

What’s Good :

Satyadev Kancharana is superb in his complex role and surprises with his acting capability. Chandini Chowdary looks gorgeous as the village belle. LB Sriram is the best of the lot in his negative role. The characters have been established quite well and the conflict point showcased is good. The initial segments establish the characters whereas the last five episodes have solid drama and gripping narration

Overall, Gods of Dharmapuri is a well-made web series with a rustic backdrop and gritty performances. The world of Dharmapuri, performances, and narration are good assets. A bit lengthy and slow to start but ends as a decent watch this lockdown season if you are the one who likes serious dramas.
