The summer movie season is coming to a close. Last weekend, The Crow   bombed hard at the box office, grossing $4.6 million in its opening weekend. For a movie that cost $50 million, the chances of  The Crow  breaking even are unlikely. The other new movie was  Blink Twice , Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut.  Blink Twice  did decent business, opening to $7.3 million on a $20 million budget.

Since it will be a quiet weekend at the theaters because of Labor Day, stay home and stream a free movie on a  FAST service . With a FAST service, viewers can watch movies with ads for free. The Hurricane Heist (2018)

The Vietnamese government and film studio group the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment say they've taken down the largest pirate streaming operation in the world.

The organization, comprising the notorious Fmovies piracy site, along with others including bflixz, flixtorz, movies7, myflixer and aniwave, was founded in 2016. It drew more than 6.7 billion visits between January 2023 and June 2024 and has been pulling in nearly 374 million monthly visits, making it the largest piracy ring in the world.

Earlier this year, Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association and chairman of ACE said that around one third of the site’s traffic came from the U.S.

Meanwhile, Vidsrc.to, a notorious video hosting provider operated by the same suspects was also taken down, impacting hundreds of additional dedicated piracy sites.

"The takedown of Fmovies is a stunning victory for casts, crews, writers, directors, studios, and the creative community across the globe," said Rivkin.

"With the leadership of ACE and the partnership of the Ministry of Public Security and the Hanoi Municipal Police, we are countering criminal activity, defending the safety of audiences, reducing risks posed to tens of millions of consumers, and protecting the rights and livelihoods of creators."

At its peak in 2023, data analytics company SimilarWeb rated Fmoviesz.to as the 11th most popular website in the TV, Movies & Streaming category - and 280th most popular website across all categories of websites globally. It was listed on the USTR "notorious markets" list between 2017 and 2023, and last year was found by the U.S. Trade Representative to have more than 60 associated domains used by "significant piracy operations".

Vietnam has been a thorn in the side of the movie industry for quite some time, hosting sites such as 123Movies, taken down in 2018.

"Strengthening intellectual property rights is an important element of the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership," said U.S. Ambassador Marc E. Knapper.

"These prosecutions demonstrate Vietnam’s commitment to intellectual property rights enforcement, contributing to an economic ecosystem where creators and inventors can thrive."

The Vietnam Film Development Association says that the takedown should be good news for the Vietnamese film industry.

"The Vietnamese movie industry is at a pivotal stage of development, transitioning from a state-subsidized production model to a rapidly growing phase driven by private sector involvement," said chairwoman Ngo Phuong Lan.

"To achieve fast and sustainable growth and integrate into the global film industry, it is essential that we follow the right path. Intellectual property rights protection is a crucial element for our industry’s success."

Efforts to stamp out piracy have faltered in recent years, with bills cracking down on the practice, proposed in 2011, failing thanks to opposition from tech firms and free speech campaigners. However, earlier this year, Rivkin said that the film companies were hoping to work with members of Congress to reintroduce similar bills, allowing copyright holders to request the takedown of infringing sites.

According to a recent report from piracy tracking firm MUSO and consulting firm Kearney, there were more than 141 billion visits to pirate video sites worldwide last year, with the U.S and India the main sources of traffic. Video piracy is claimed to be costing the U.S. economy between $29.2 and $71 billion each year.

An international anti-piracy coalition has shut down Fmovies, a large illegal streaming operation based in Vietnam , in a major victory for the entertainment industry .

The coalition, which includes major Hollywood studios and is led by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), revealed on Thursday that it worked with police in Hanoi to shut down Fmovies and a host of affiliated sites .

The operation also saw the shutdown of video hosting provider Vidsrc.to and its affiliated sites, which were operated by the same suspects.

Two Vietnamese men were arrested by Hanoi police in connection with the case but have not yet been charged, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Charles Rivkin, chairman of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and ACE, praised the shutdown as a big moment for the global creative community. In a statement, he called it “ a stunning victory for casts, crews, writers, directors, studios, and the creative community across the globe ”.

“We took down the mothership here,” he was quoted as saying by Variety . “There was a time when piracy was Whac-a-Mole… Today, we go after piracy at its root .”

ACE includes members like Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon and Walt Disney Studios.

Larissa Knapp, a senior executive at the MPA, emphasised that the action serves as a strong deterrent and expressed a commitment to ongoing collaboration with various authorities to prosecute those responsible.

“We look forward to ongoing joint efforts with Vietnamese authorities, US Homeland Security Investigations and the US Department of Justice International Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (ICHIP) program to bring the criminal operators to justice,” she said.

The operation included other sites like Bflixz, Flixtorz, Movies7, and Myflixer, and was described as the largest pirate streaming network in the world, with over 6.7 billion visits from January 2023 to June 2024.

At its peak in 2023, Fmovies ranked as the 11th most popular website worldwide in the TV, movies, and streaming category, according to the data analytics company SimilarWeb.

Fmovies has been on the US Trade Representative’s “ notorious markets” list for counterfeiting and piracy since 2017. The USTR’s latest report states that Fmovies is linked to more than 60 domains involved in “significant piracy operations”.

Many consumers who visit piracy sites like those operated by Fmovies “don’t even realise that it’s wrong,” Mr Rivkin said.

“Some of these sites are as clean and beautiful as, say, a Netflix. It seems to be too good to be true — and it is.”

He added that the MPA is advocating for US legislation that would enable nationwide blocking of piracy sites, similar to laws already in place in over 60 other countries.

In a statement, Marc E Knapper, US ambassador to Vietnam said: “Strengthening intellectual property rights is an important element of the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership. These prosecutions demonstrate Vietnam’s commitment to intellectual property rights enforcement, contributing to an economic ecosystem where creators and inventors can thrive.”
