Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

PhD students will carry out focused research in their area of specialisation, which is of immediate relevance to their research interest. Additionally, they will be exposed to new developments and challenges in their research topic in the international arena through media, seminars, conferences and keynote addresses and also through research attachments and collaborative exchange arrangements with international recognised research centres.

This Ph.D programme is purely based on individual supervised research. Candidates will be exposed to Research Methodology Course to strengthen their research knowledge. At the end of the candidate's study, a thesis must be submitted and upon successful defence, the candidate will be granted Ph.D status. Candidates are required to complete their studies within 12 semesters.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Built Environment is an interdisciplinary program offered by Faculty of Built Environment, University of Malaya (UM). The program provides students with a common core of extensive, integrated knowledge focused upon all the facets of the built environment specialization. The Faculty of Built Environment UM has an internationally renowned reputation. Its international focus and diverse body of students makes it a stimulating environment for ambitious PhD candidates who wish to obtain a doctoral degree from a leading design academy/research institute. PhD candidates benefit from close interaction with world-class researchers and educators and are well supervised throughout their education.

Research is the principal requirement and candidates will produce a thesis, Candidates may be required to attend some pre-requisite courses as prescribed by the University.

The length of time required for the completion of a programme depends on the progress of the individual candidate. In general, the minimum, maximum and average durations are as follows: Program Duration Minimum: 4 semesters Maximum :12 semesters Average   : 6 semesters  (Average semester is the length of time when candidates usually complete their programme)

Students who have undertaken the PhD programme may pursue their careers in academia and industry related to the built environment.

Submission for the proposal defence (pd).

Candidates are required to submit  four (4) copies of complete research proposal report of 3,000 – 7,000 words  the Postgraduate Office  not later than two (2) weeks before the date of the presentation , which includes the following:

  • introduction, statement of problem and scope of research;
  • research objective;
  • summary of literature review;
  • description of conceptual framework or summary of experimental methods or summary of research design and required equipment;
  • importance and relevance of study;
  • preliminary findings / pilot test (initial findings, if any)
  • proposed work schedule based on the designated date of submission of thesis/dissertation; and
  • brief bibliography

Submission for the Confirmation Defence (for direct admission candidates)

  • credible research methodology;

Candidates are required to submit  four (4) copies of complete research proposal report of 5,000 – 10,000 words  the Postgraduate Office  not later than two (2) weeks before the date of the presentation , which includes the following:

  • abstract (500 words in Malay and English);
  • objective and Statement of Problem
  • brief and concise literature review;
  • research findings that have been obtained to this point;
  • brief and concise bibiliography;
  • research plan that will lead to the submission of the dissertation/thesis on the designated date; and
  • list of publications or conference papers presented during the candidature period.

Progress Report

A candidate is required to submit a research progress report latest between  week sixteen and week eighteen of each semester before the registration of the subsequent semester  in accordance with the prescribed procedure. The Supervisor, Co-Supervisor and Consultant shall evaluate the candidate’s research progress report in accordance with the prescibed procedures and complete the said evaluation within one (1) week from the date of receipt of progress report for the semester concerned.

A candidate whose  progress is satisfactory shall be recommended to continue  with his candidature. A candidate whose  progress is not satisfactory for two (2) consecutive semesters shall have his candidature terminated  by the University. Please make sure the following steps are followed to ensure successful submission of your progress report:

  • International candidate  shall be required to attend at a satisfactory level a Bahasa Malaysia course that is conducted by the University before being conferred the Degree. A master’s degree from a recognized university. Those who have obtained a bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 3.7 and above can apply directly for the PhD programme.

Language Requirement

The Doctor of Philosophy is University of Malaya’s premier research training degree. The pinnacle of academic achievement, the Ph.D, is awarded based on the foundation of the thesis prepared under supervision, resulting in an original and significant contribution, displaying extensive knowledge and comprehension of the subject and field of study.

Students applying for the PhD programme must meet the University’s admission requirements, and should have a relevant MA degree for admission into the PhD programme. The PhD programme is by research only, and students are expected to produce an original thesis of up to 100,000 words in length.

Through our academic staff’s specialization and research interests, our Department offers expertise in a wide variety of literary fields, including Medieval literature, Renaissance literature, 19th century literature, Modernist and Postmodernist literature, Postcolonial literatures (with a strong interest in Malaysian literature), travel literature, ecocriticism, African literature, feminist literature, modern drama, literary theory and more.

We warmly welcome prospective students, both from Malaysia and from abroad, who wish to pursue advanced studies in literature in English.

DOCTOR OF PUBLIC HEALTH (DRPH) – BY MIXED MODE

Doctor of Public Health programme is an advanced professional degree for those who wish to be leaders in the practice of public health. This PhD programme is purely based on individual supervised research. At the end of the candidate's study, a thesis must be submitted and upon successful defense of the paper, the candidate will be granted PhD status. 

The candidate is greatly encouraged to carry out research in the field of Social Sciences, Humanities, Economics & Businesses that is multidisciplinary and comparative in nature encompassing any country or region within Asia and Europe.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEO)

The goal of the AEI PhD Programme is to produce scholars who can lead the development and dissemination of knowledge as a leader in research and teaching as well as services for the society. Accordingly the Programme Educational Objectives (PEO) are as follows:

  • PEO1 : Advancing innovation in research and work practices.
  • PEO2 : Leading research as researcher and / or practitioners with national and / or international expertise.
  • PEO3 : Disseminate research results and/or provide expert advice in an ethical and professional conduct.

Duration of Study

Full-time Minimum: 4 semesters Maximum: 12 semesters

Part-time Minimum: 6 semesters Maximum: 16 semesters

Entry Requirement

Applicant should hold a recognised:

  • Master's Degree (Research Mode); or
  • Master’s Degree (Coursework/Mixed Mode) with a minimum of CGPA 3.7 or its equivalent; or
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree (Coursework/Mixed Mode) with a minimum of CGPA 3.0 or its equivalent; or

Consideration will also be given to applicant with these criteria:

  • Master’s Degree (Coursework/Mixed Mode) with CGPA between 2.00 – 3.69 or its equivalent, and Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of CGPA 3.0 or its equivalent; or

Universiti Malaya graduates:

  • have at least five (5) years of work experience in a related field; or

  • passed the interview conducted by the AEI; or
  • passed the Special Assessment conducted by the AEI

Other graduates:

  • have at least three (3) years of work experience in a related field; or
  • produced publications in related fields; or
  • scholarship holder; or
  • an employee of a government agency; or

Fast Track (Accelerated / Direct Admission)

The direct admission / Fast Track (accelerated admission) provides the opportunity for Bachelor’s Degree graduates with the academic qualifications and who have high potential to pursue their studies in the Doctoral programme by research without having a Master’s qualification in the field concerned.

Applicants who attained the following qualification may be admitted to the Doctoral programme by research:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum CGPA of not less than 3.70 (out of 4.00) or equivalent; and
  • Passed the interview and presentation of the proposed research.

English Language Requirement

An applicant who is not a Malaysian citizen and holds a degree from a university or higher education institution where the language of instruction for that degree is not English but wishes to pursue a program and write a thesis in English must meet a minimum score requirement in one of the recognized standard language proficiency tests as follows:

Supervision

Candidate are encouraged to be supervised by two (2) established and experienced academics based on their fields of study. Please refer to https://umexpert.um.edu.my to check for possible supervisors.

All applicants must contact and obtain the acknowledgement of the supervisors before submitting the application. One of the supervisors must be a regular academic at the AEI.

Research Intent

Applicants for doctoral degree programmes by research are required to submit a research proposal or research intent on the brief statement of the research programme which they propose to carry out. The research proposal/research intent should comprise the following elements:

  • Field of Research
  • Topic of Research
  • Statement of Problem (with supportive literature)
  • Research Objective
  • Research Methodology
  • Significant of the Research
  • References (if applicable)

The research proposal should contain maximum of 1,000 words . All proposals will go through plagiarism check by AEI (using the Turnitin service), and must pass the minimum requirement of 15% and below of similarity index.

Please note that all decisions regarding the application is final, and the process of selection is vetted by the AEI selection committee.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D)

The PhD programme is a full research programme leading to the submission of a thesis based on an individually supervised research. All research proposals must be approved and supervised by the Faculty.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

A Master’s degree by way of research; or

A Master’s degree by coursework with CGPA of not less than 3.7; or

A Master’s degree by coursework with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and a Bachelor degree with CGPA not less than 3.0; or

A Master’s degree by coursework with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and a Bachelor degree with CGPA between 2.5 and 2.99 and one of the following criteria :

  • Relevant work experience;
  • Publication in the relevant field;
  • Applicant is a scholarship holder;
  • Applicant is a Universiti of Malaya graduate;
  • Applicant is a civil servant.

General Information:  Registrations are open all year. However, selection of proposals will be made by the Taskforce Research Candidate Selection that convenes four (4) times a year - March, June, September, and December. For example, if you apply for our PhD programme in July, the committee will only convene in September and the decision will be made thereafter.   Below is our application process for the PhD programme and Master of Legal Studies.

  • Receipt of application of PhD or MLS through Maya portal (to comply with all the requirements stated on our website).
  • Selection of Proposal by PhD and MLS Committee members.
  • If accepted, the proposal will be sent to the proposed supervisor(s) for their consideration.
  • If the Taskforce and Supervisor(s) are agreeable to the student’s proposal, an offer letter will be issued to the student through our Maya portal.
  • If the Taskforce or the proposed Supervisor rejects the proposal, the decision will be conveyed to the student through our MAYA portal.

  Enrolment for the PhD and MLS programme are on:

Sem 1 – October (current year) Sem 2 – March (current year)

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

Bahasa Malaysia for Non-Malaysians citizens Required to attend at a satisfactory level and pass a course in Bahasa Malaysia conducted by the University before being conferred the Degree.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The PhD programme is a full research programme leading to the submission of a thesis based on an individually supervised research.  All research proposals must be approved and research be supervised by the Faculty. 

PhD candidates are required to register and pass a Research Methodology course (LVX8001) with 3 credits and complete the GLT7001- Bahasa Malaysia (for the Non-Malaysian candidates only). The Research Methodology class is compulsory and candidates are required to attend the Research Methodology class in person- physical class attendance in class. For international students, you are required to make necessary arrangements and reside in Malaysia for at least six (6) months to be able to attend the Research Methodology class. Minimum attendance is at least 80% according to the visa requirement.

All international students are encouraged to reside in Malaysia throughout the duration of their PhD candidature although this is not compulsory. At the end of the candidature, a candidate is required to produce a thesis not exceeding 100,000 words on the subject of  his/her research.

Faculty Seminars

Candidates are require to deliver three (3) Seminars

  • Research Proposal seminar-to be delivered at the Second Semester. The candidates are required to submit a research proposal of 3,000 – 5,000 words.
  • Candidature Defence seminar - to be delivered at the Fifth Semester. The candidates are required deliver a research progress report of about 10,000 words.
  • The Third seminar,which is to be delivered prior to submission of the thesis, requires the candidate to submit a summary of the thesis of 3,000 to 5,000 words, and an abstract of 500 words.

Faculty's Policy on the Academic Residential Requirement :

"Notwithstanding any other existing regulations, an international candidate shall comply with the academic residency requirement and attend the Research Methodology class in person (physically). This means that the candidate is required to be in Malaysia for a minimum period of one (1) semester or six (6) months (whichever is later)."

During this period of time, the candidate is required to have a face to face (physical/in person) consultation with the respective Supervisor, both at the beginning and at the end of the Semester. The Student shall also abide to the Role and Responsibilities of Candidate attached.
