Shopping has always been my way to de-stress from a chaotic life. Lately, I have been all too consumed with my university examinations. All I ever did was wake up, study, eat and sleep. So, when my exams concluded last week, I decided to head out and indulge in some inane shopping.

I had no idea what I wanted to buy, but I headed to the city's most famous street market. It is situated in the city's heart, at the 14th crossroad.

The market is a dream location for a shopping enthusiast like me. The lanes are covered with small shops selling all kinds of material products that you can think of. There is something for everyone- from clothes to decorative material for the house!

The street market is primarily known for its book shops. There are five shops in a row, all selling second-hand books at meager prices.

The yellow foxed pages of old classics have a magic of their own. What's even more remarkable is the annotations on the book's margins. Knowing that someone else read this book and scribbled their thoughts on the side allows me to connect with a stranger. It's an inexplicable feeling.

So, every time I visit this beautiful market, I make sure to stop by one of the book shops and buy at least one hardcover. I bought three books this time and was the happiest while returning home.

I absolutely love visiting this market. It's always bustling with so much energy- both the enthusiastic vendors and the curious customers. It's my comfort place, and I can't wait to go there again!

I have never been the kind of person who was keen on going to shopping malls and checking out products from high-end brands. They are costly, and I don't find spending in favor of big corporations ideal.

Hence, every time I have to wish to shop, I pick up my bag and run to the nearby street market. It's one of the most famous places in our city. It features vendors who offer everything from clothes, books, and shoes to kitchen crockery and decorative house items. But it is most famous for its street food. There stands a small hawker selling the most delicious snacks or finger-licking food at every corner.

Besides the delicious and spicy food, the market is famous for selling affordable clothes. If you maintain them well, the clothes may even last years. It's better than spending on big brands that already have mammoth earnings.

Going to this street market indeed requires a lot of patience and strength, though. It's always bustling with an energetic crowd, and it's extremely noisy, too. There's always someone stepping on your toes, and it's a struggle to get any vendor to hear you.

Although visiting the street market is straining yet, I never come back empty-handed. I adore this little street market and plan to go back soon!

On the other hand, going to a street market and shopping will allow you to buy more for less. It also offers a chance to explore underrated goods that might not be available online. So, a mix of both shopping styles is perfect, in my opinion.

Big brands vs. street vendors- whose products are better?

The quality of a branded product might be slightly better, but the company ethics can sometimes be questionable. Moreover, they demand quite a hefty price. On the other hand, street market vendors fairly price their products and offer decent quality most of the time.

Although there are various street markets in my city, one has a special place in my heart and hence is worth mentioning. The street market’s name is Palika Bazar, which is in the city’s heart.

.And it is famous for many things. It has a beautiful clothes market where you can find the latest fashionable clothes according to size and pocket. People who cannot afford fashionable brands because of lack of money can buy clothes at reasonable rates. In this market, the products are available at a lower cost than in the showrooms, and the quality is also good. And if you wish to have a first copy of costly brands like Superdry and Versace, you can get them at nominal prices.

Apart from that, it is famous for household goods like you need anything from curtains to kitchen utensils, everything is available. Moreover, this market serves good mouth-watering delicacies.

While shopping , people usually get tired, so they can pamper their appetite by having Indian, Chinese, and Italian cuisines, and the prices are not so high. So people from all walks of life can afford it. I did some shopping over there. I had to move to a new place, so I was looking for new curtains and other household materials.

So I went there. My budget was low, but to my surprise , I got all the items within my budget. I felt good about it because, first of all, the experience was excellent; the crowd inside the market was excellent, and the shopkeepers played background music. The overall environment was good, and rather than going to the showrooms and shopping malls, I will visit this market to buy the goods and services of my choice.

I live in a city. Nearby, there is a street market. It is related to vegetables and fruits. Many farmers sell their products. These are very fresh and organic. They sell fresh and organic products.

I feel very good when I buy fresh fruits and vegetables. It is good for our health. It is very cheap when we buy it from the market. We are supporting people’s lives by purchasing products from street vendors. There are a lot of people who need help to open stores and places in malls. So, they prefer to choose street markets to sell their products.

Middle-class families prefer to buy cheap vegetables from the street market. They cannot afford costly products.

Traveling distance is very less. People go to the street market and buy fresh fruits and vegetables. So, it is very good for us.

As I live in Chandigarh, my city has many street markets.

The most popular market is the Shastri market, located in sector 22. It is located in the center of the city. Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh people come here to buy clothes and other products.

It is one of the most busy markets, and you can buy anything there. There are around 200 shops, and the vendors are very polite, and you can buy economical stuff over there. I want to talk about one incident that occurred when I went over there.

I went there last Sunday to buy jeans, and I bought them for just 1000, which was very good and affordable. After that, I ate street food with my family, which I enjoyed very much because this is one of the markets where I have been going with our family since childhood. I always enjoy it whenever I go there with my loved ones.

India is a place that has people from all walks of life. So, for needy people, street markets sell products and services at cheaper prices. These are high-end products, mostly branded ones.

2. Do you think small markets will disappear in the future?

Small markets will always exist because they are nearby, and opening a shop in a small market is relatively easy. People with humble beginnings will always prefer to open a shop in a small market, and people living in poverty also prefer going to small markets.

3. Have people’s shopping habits changed in recent years?

There has been a paradigm shift in people’s shopping habits in recent years. Earlier, people used to go to markets to shop.However, due to time constraints and the availability of various platforms, people now prefer to shop online. Moreover, people look for reviews of various products and services before shopping.

4. What is the difference between shopping in street markets and big shopping malls?

Shopping in street markets is extremely easy because you can go at your convenience. But sometimes it’s uncomfortable because there’s no air conditioning. On the contrary, going to big shopping malls costs you because you must also pay parking charges. But you get extreme comfort because, during scorching heat, the malls remain air-conditioned. And during chilling winter, they have heating systems. So it’s easy for a person to go shopping in shopping malls.

5. Do you think the goods sold at discount stores do not have good values or qualities?

Yes, discounted products are usually not good because, in most cases, they are leftovers. And they are those items that are out of fashion. That’s why companies organize sales during off-seasons; they offer discounts for products they cannot sell during peak season.

6. Why do some people like to buy expensive goods?

Some people have this uncanny knack for flaunting their wealth. So they think buying expensive goods and exhibiting them in front of their loved ones will enhance their reputation. Moreover, they think buying such things helps them live an appealing lifestyle.

7. Do you like shopping online or going out to shop?

I’m not a shopping enthusiast. That’s why I prefer shopping online because it is very comfortable.

8. What is the difference between shopping with friends and shopping alone?

When you shop with friends, you have people who can give you suggestions. On the contrary, when you shop alone, you must make informed decisions regarding what to buy and avoid.

9. What are the disadvantages of shopping in a big mall?

The biggest disadvantage is that you do not get a product at a higher discount because the shops in the shopping mall have to pay huge rentals and bear huge maintenance costs. They are not in a position to offer massive discounts. Moreover, people must also pay incidental charges, like parking fees. So it is expensive compared to local shops.

10. Why do people like to buy branded products?

People like to buy branded products for two reasons.Firstly, they think that the branded products are of good quality.Secondly, they think their personality would be enhanced if they wore branded products and left a good mark in front of their near and dear ones.

11. In your opinion, are big discounts real or just advertisements?

The companies bid for their customers by putting up advertisements for big discounts. Usually, products or services available at a cheaper rate are inferior; hence, you do not get the full value of your investment.

The following are some of the reasons for the disappearance of local markets. a) Extensive marketing and advertising by big businesses is a threat to the very existence of the small businesses. b) Due to the availability of excess money, big companies can buy several local stores and monopolise the products. c) An increasing number of people are buying what they need online. Very few people actually feel the need to venture into brick and mortar stores. In other words, online shopping has become more popular than in-store shopping, due to the fact that it makes shopping easier. d) Buyers no longer have to drive all the way to shops to buy things. Also, online stores tend to offer attractive prices probably because they have lower overhead costs, which allows them to sell items for deeply discounted prices.

2)an unpredictable rise in the rate of inflation(rental fee,levy and other expenses have increased-

Introduction: It is true that the number of outlet stores and main street businesses are in decline. There are many reasons for this to happen, and in my opinion it has both positive and negative consequences.

First body paragraph - rise in online shopping - online shopping is now accounts for 10% of transactions - economy crisis - the cost of living has increased nowadays - people have less free time to shop around

Second body paragraph about negatives: - there several drawbacks - people lose their jobs - shopping centers would not be as attractive any more.. - shopping centers used for more than one purpose they were also a place to hang out, have dinner, watch a film, browse new brands and designs. - some stores are historically important e.g. Arcade jewellery Center in London

"Shop" implies a building. A market has "stalls", which are temporary structures. In England, many markets operate only one or two days per week in smaller country towns, where people bring produce in from the surrounding countryside.

Task 1 does not ask for your opinion, and you should not state your opinion in Task 1.

Positive: The goods' prices will decrease due to selling of products in large quantities and accordingly, the general cost will decrease.

Negative: Many local employees who are working in the retail sector will lose their job and will become workers of big companies which mostly belong to global commerces and pay off the minimum benefits to locals.

Although this change brings some benefits, it leads many negative impacts on local businesses and communities.

Many high street shops have gone out of business in recent years. reasons 1.landlords in the area want to get profits at maximum by asking high rent fee for using a building from tenants. 2.Owners running private business in that areas are getting pressure of the payment monthly and finally decide to leave out of the area and find a cheaper place as alternative. 3.Global franchise company stores are replaced in the street and so the locally unique characteristic atmosphere made by the local shops has fade away, therefore, there is no differences between the main street and other places. The tourists or residents looking for unique dishes lose their interest in this street and don’t visit the global street, and this leads to make economy get worse.

Below is my first writing, so is is quite long and maybe a lots of mistake, if possible Kindly have a look and have me revised or commented, thank you very much.

In recent years, many shops at high streets have gone out of business. From my opinion, the main reason is restructuring infrastructure of the governments and high street shops also do not much benefit, I think that this is a quite positive development.

Firstly, it is the infrastructure structure, in which high streets are for transportation and traffic as main role. Furthermore, regardless of benefits that shops cannot be able to attract consumers at the high-class layer, especially foreign customer channel. Finally, problems such as traffic jam and traffic accident, that is if there are shops locating at high streets it will be automatically appeared the number of customers for selling and buying, nobody can be sure is not causing the traffic jam or even accident happening.

On the other hand, infrastructure is a national role in advertising and attracting foreign tourists via safe and convenient traffic. if a country has high streets where are most shops grown, it will not only non-efficiency in advertisement of the national infrastructural beauty and foreign tourist attracting, but also reducing in contribution to GDP generally and individuals particularly. For instance, in Vietnam in 2000s, there were a lots of shops in high streets between the nearby provinces, it was much impacted badly on transportation that make the streets were always at crowded situation just to have transaction at shops, more important that it is was not much benefit proved by GDP statistics. But after restructured, there were improved all faces like smooth and safe transportation and traffic, benefit was increased and significantly contributing to GDP of the nation.

In conclusion, I think that shops be put out of high streets are the positive development, it is not only having traffic improved but also and more important is the beautiful infrastructure face, especially get more benefit in State budget contribution. (306 words)

"it will be automatically appeared": 'appear' is an intransitive verb and therefore cannot normally be passive.

In general, I would suggest that you need to go through your essay with a good teacher, as , whilst your ideas and vocabulary may be good, the ideas do not come across clearly.

Hi Simon, I’ll do my IELTS test in 4 days but still find it difficult to make a partly-agree essay.

The essay question is that “we should stop using books in schools, and use movies, films, and computers instead.”

If I decide to partly agree, can I use this skeleton: Body 1: why books should be stopped (the weaknesses of using books) Body 2: books cannot be replaced thoroughly by any means.

Or this: Body 1: the use of books should not be stopped because of its benefits Body 2: computerised resources should be used as well

In recent years, high street shops have been gone out of business, my opinion is it is a positive development, because infrastructure restructuring and benefit of high street shop is not efficient.

The main argument for high street shops have been gone of business in recent years is having infrastructure restructuring. Firstly, removing shops out of streets for extending streets, in order to be convenient for traffic and transportation. Secondly other units can be built instead, such as buildings with national typical characteristics. And finally, add more some commercial centres blocks along high streets for supplying necessary service to long distance passengers, all that change can make the face of infrastructure is better. For instance, Pham Van Dong High street in Hochiminh City now is very beautiful with no shops, there are many big building and commercial units instead.

On the other hand, nowadays with the information technology 4.0 E commercials are developing very fast, it is quite difficult for high street shops to be alive. Besides, the land fee of high street is significantly high. Furthermore, high streets are mainly for traffic especially vehicle transportation, it is not convenient for selling and buying, hence the amount of money earned from products selling are small, the result is that business result is not efficient. One example is with USD10,000 we can open a shop at walking street or citizen area, by this method it surely be much workable, as land fee is low and the number of customers will be crowded, so the business result of this method will be great.

In conclusion, I think believe that high street shops have been gone out of business in recent years is positive development, because for infrastructure restructuring and benefit of high street shops is also not efficient. (296 words)

Kimhanh "high street shops have [been] gone ". There is a fairly strict rule in English that only transitive verbs can be passive. go/went/gone is an intransitive verb. Therefore "have been gone" must be a mistake.

Maybe the error arises from translating from Vietnamese. It is true that "bị" in Vietnamese often corresponds with a passive in English; but this is not always true: "Anh ta bị chóng mặt." [Vietnamese] He is feeling dizzy.

[ No I do not speak or know your language. But I can google, cut and paste. ]

2) "... business, my opinion..." : this is two sentences joined by a comma. Not in English! Google "run-on sentence" or "comma-splice".

3) "Pham Van Dong High street in Hochiminh City now is very beautiful with no shops, there are many big building and commercial units instead." That's interesting: in England, many High Streets have retained their shops, but the traffic has been re-routed away into a by-pass, and the High Street itself has been turned into a pedestrian precinct.

I do notice in my travels that countries which previously had centralized-planning governments, also tended to have grandiose squares and public buildings, while shops and consumer facilities were less grandiosely served.

Equally, at the other extreme, in a more laissez-faire economy, town-planning and signage can seem more like an ill-planned jungle, with new subdivisions miles from any shops. Indeed our definition of a "community" is a new subdivision where there are no shops and no bus service so everyone has to help each other with lifts and shopping.

Another feature is where commercial developers build large hypermarkets on greenfield sites outside the established residential areas, and residents then have to use their greenhouse-gas-emitting cars and SUVs to get there. Not a good well-thought-out development at all.

I was surprised to see you mention an IELTS score of 5.0 in relation to a doctorate. In my experience, you would need an average score of well over 7.5 for such an undertaking. To do all the background reading and write a thesis, I would suggest a minimum of eight.

Just keep using the material and advice from this site, and avoid anyone who offers you shortcuts to success. Simon is the best around.

Places for Shopping

There are many places where we can go shopping. Supermarkets are big stores where we can buy many different things like food, clothes, and household items. Smaller stores or shops sell specific things. For example, a toy store sells toys, a book store sells books, and a clothing store sells clothes.

Another place to shop is at a market. Markets can be indoors or outdoors. They often sell fresh food, handmade items, and second-hand goods. Some markets are only open on certain days of the week.

Why Do We Shop?

We shop for many reasons. We need to buy food to eat and clothes to wear. We also shop to buy gifts for others on special occasions like birthdays or holidays. Sometimes, we shop for fun. It can be exciting to buy new things, especially if they are things we have been saving up for.

Even though shopping can be fun, it’s important to be responsible. This means we should only buy things we need or can afford. We should also think about the environment. I would like to talk about a street market which is just a stone throw away from my home. I live in a big city, and there are plenty of street markets. However, the one which I often visit is Grand Bazar. It is a perfect place if you want to buy anything related to your wardrobe, kitchen, or any other household thing, then this place is for you.

It is famous for its quality products and items at affordable prices. Usually, we get low-quality products at low prices, but here that’s not the case. They do not compromise with quality. Therefore, I would not say they sell everything at low prices. Apart from that, when you go there, you would notice that people from all walks of life come here for shopping and delicious food.

Yes, this market is also famous because of a particular Chinese restaurant. Old and young all love their food. You can literally feel the aroma of food nearby that restaurant, and no one has an issue with it. It is just amazing.

I feel great about it, and I am glad that this market is pretty close to my home. Therefore, I often visit there with my family and friends to relax and enjoy the delightful food.

I belong to a village, and this market is near to our house. Our town is very famous because of this market named “Nagar Market”. It is a big market, and everything is easy to find in this market.

I buy my home furnishings and grocery from this market. I also purchase my outfits from the same market. Because there are many branded shops are available here.

This market is known for selling goods at low prices. As a result of this rich and poor people come here for shopping. Many restaurants in this market are famous for their food quality.

I love to going there, whenever I am sad I go shopping there. Most of the time, me and my brother go for a walk there. I feel joyful and relaxed when I go to this market. I often tell people to visit this market if they come to our village and if you want to buy branded products at reasonable prices.

Street markets are an ingrained part of the daily lives of many people who reside in third world countries like India, Pakistan, Brazil and many others. These markets are famous for their dirt-cheap prices and the assortment of products they sell. A majority of the population is known to do their shopping in such flea markets. Since I was a child, I have had countless memories of accompanying my mother on her trips to such a street market. The name of the place is Gariahat and it is one of the most famous places in the city of Kolkata.

The Gariahat market is famous for its humongous range of products ranging from garments, accessories, books, utensils, electronics, and even furniture. The most notable aspect of this particular flea market is its gargantuan range of ladies’ garments and accessories for almost every occasion. People who visit the Gariahat market rarely find themselves in a position where they are unable to find the product that they seek. These markets have more options to choose from than some of the largest and most exorbitant shopping malls in the city.

Gariahat market is famous for everything ranging from its selection of products and services to the nature of the people from the locality. It is one of the busiest markets in Kolkata and is always bustling with crowds. Another characteristic of this market that makes it so favoured is the local food. The different types of cuisines available here range from Chinese, North Indian to Bengali and several others.

Gariahat market has been a major part of my childhood and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Even to this day, I always prefer going to this market for most of my needs instead of a high-priced shopping centre.

Meaning: huge; enormous. Eg. : There was a humongous increase in college applications after the pandemic.

Meaning: (of a price or amount charged) unreasonably high. Eg.: The exorbitant prices of this place were the reason the trip had to be cut short.

The choice between online shopping and shopping from a physical store is quite difficult. Both online shopping and offline shopping have their advantages and disadvantages. Although online shopping provides customers with the practicality of shopping from the comfort of their homes, it is difficult to judge the quality of the products from online shopping platforms. On the other hand, customers can personally judge the standard of the products they buy when visiting a store. In my opinion, I would prefer going out shopping as opposed to online shopping.

There is a huge difference between shopping by yourself and shopping with friends. When shopping alone, an individual makes decisions on their own. Although there is a certain amount of liberty in such a practice, it might lead some people to make unappealing choices, especially when shopping for apparel. However, when shopping with friends, a person can get the opinion of others before they make a purchase which is always prudent.

What are the disadvantages of shopping in a big mall?

Contrary to popular belief, there are a few disadvantages to shopping in a big mall. One of the biggest disadvantages is the hike in the prices of products due to the addition of several fixed costs that the vendor has to bear. Another disadvantage is the unhygienic and questionable quality of the products due to them being surveyed and inspected by countless people. Some people who are not used to shopping in big malls might also feel self-conscious and hesitant to make purchases in these places.

Why do people like to buy branded products?

The inclination towards branded products is a widespread phenomenon in this day and age. People’s obsession with lavish brands is often driven by snob appeal. Although this is the case for a sizeable portion of shoppers, many people prefer branded products for their superior quality. Branded products are also popular for following a standard of quality which makes them consistent when it comes to usage over a long period of time.

In your opinion, are big discounts real or just an advertisement?

People have always questioned the credibility of big discounts and sales. Many individuals believe that such offers are nothing but shrewd marketing strategies to allure more customers. Some companies are known to hike their prices before they offer a discount to protect their profit margins. In my opinion, there are some brands that offer genuine discounts to their customers.

Meaning: the power or scope to act as one pleases. Eg.: George was at total liberty to study the subjects he preferred in college.

Meaning: not inviting or attractive. Eg.: The ambience of this restaurant is quite unappealing.

Meaning: clothing. Eg.: Pantaloons is famous for its wide range of apparel.

Meaning: tentative, unsure, or slow in acting or speaking. Eg.: The students were hesitant to ask the teacher for a re-evaluation of their exam papers.

Meaning: sumptuously rich, elaborate, or luxurious. Eg.: It was clear from their social media pictures that they had a lavish wedding.

In the past, shoppers would make dedicated trips to specific stores for products. In the 1980s in the United States, the novel combination of shopping plazas and department stores with entertainment venues like state-of-the-art cinemas and appetizing foods courts made them the centre of social activity for a generation. It is therefore no wonder that youths and adults alike the world over opt to spend their time and money shopping at malls that cater to all their needs.

While some might argue that shopping is largely a waste of time, I feel that its economic advantages outweigh other concerns. Masses of wealthy middle-class consumers contribute greatly to economic prosperity and that brings various benefits to all socioeconomic classes. A counter-point illustrating this would be in Japan in the last two decades where a long recession has decimated the middle-class, leading to decreased shopping, closures of malls and a stagnant economy. The government has desperately lowered interest rates in order to stimulate the type of spending that malls encourage. Malls, as one crucial part of a consumer society, serve to encourage spending and national prosperity.

In conclusion, an increasing number of people frequent malls for their convenience and this boosts the economy. If governments were to invest more money in tax cuts this would further encourage spending at malls and help developing nations and developed ones whose growth has plateaued.

Nowadays it has become a trend for young adults to go for leisure shopping every now and then. I strongly believe it has bought a considerable imbalance in their finances.

Since the advent of malls these days many companies have established different businesses ranging from clothing, food, gaming, and departmental stores with cinema halls and many more. Most of the companies promote their products with massive promotions and numerous offers to their customers which lure them easily. With the offers like these, young adults get easily trapped in the campaigns and overspend at the end of the day which leaves them broken. For example, a recent survey conducted by the city council has identified that 80% of people of young adults like to spend their free time at shopping malls and departmental stores. Some even like to go to the gaming bar or clubs.

There are many drawbacks to this, when young people tend to spend more at unnecessary things, they would certainly get skint at the end of the month. Firstly, due to poor financial planning, many young people end up speding way too much than required. So, there is no wonder that the young adults tend to shop more than it is needed and spend their both time and money at malls. Secondly, due to less money, they tend to borrow money from family and friends which puts them in a dire situation.

In conclusion, an increasing number of young adults spends most of their money by frequently doing the leisure shopping which in turn leaves them with no or very little money.It is always recommended to plan the budget accordingly to keep the finances upright.

Go west on Central and you’ll find Florida CraftArt (500 block), which features the work of the most talented local artists. Clustered together on the 700 block are Morean Arts Center , Morean Glass Studio and the mesmerizing Chihuly Collection . And in the Grand Central District , Imagine Museum features dreamy glass art (be sure to check out the mural on its east-facing wall!).

Whether you’re having a night on the town, doing a little day-drinking or checking out some live music, Central Ave. is the place for it. The 200 block is the perfect spot to bar-hop, from beloved dive Mastry’s to chic Mandarin Hide to laid-back The Crafty Squirrel . Many feature live music. Craft beer lovers are definitely not left out, especially at Grand Central Brew House (2300 block) and Right Around the Corner Arcade Bar (2200 Block). As for spots to savor good wine, Hawthorne Bottle Shoppe (2900 block) and Sauvignon Wine Locker (200 block) are your best bets. Salut!

A walk along Nevsky Avenue, St. Petersburg’s fascinating Main Street

Walking along Nevsky Avenue (or Nevsky Prospekt) from beginning to end is the best way to get to know St. Petersburg and to check its pulse, while being able to stop at the many shops and restaurants that you will find on your way. In this article I will take you on a very special tour of one of the streets with the greatest history in the world looking at its most representative buildings and attractions, direct testimonies of the city’s past, present and future.

I'm going to talk about ...

1. Nevsky Avenue: the best start for getting to know the city

The first thing you should know is that Nevsky Avenue (or Nevsky Prospect) is no less than 4.5 kilometers long and ranges between 25 and 60 meters wide.

Traveling on foot from end to end without stopping, may take around 60 minutes and I would say it’s the best start for getting to know the city.

It is a very lively place for pedestrians, with prominent buildings and where cars and buses also run. Very crowded with tourists.

It is St. Petersburg’s quintessential avenue, which, if we pay attention to its numbering, begins at the Palace Square, next to the Admiralty Building and the Hermitage , and ends at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery.

Even numbers correspond to the sunny area, a popular place for pedestrians, while odd numbers are informally said to be in the “shade”

If you like walking around cities, this walk is, without a doubt, the place for you. And not only during the day, because at night it is also very pleasant to walk along this street full of cafes, restaurants, bookstores and souvenir shops.

2. A little bit on the history of Nevsky Avenue (Nevsky Prospect)

The beginnings of the avenue, around 1718, parallels the birth of St. Petersburg in 1703 under Peter the Great, when it was only a road leading towards Novgorod located in a swampy, wooded area.

After a major fire, in the mid-18 th cent. the buildings or mansions of the noble, wealthy people, were already being made out of stone and not of wood.

At the beginning of the 19 th cent. the Kazan Cathedral, the city’s main cathedral, was built. Banks and commercial buildings were also starting to spring up.

In the middle of the same century, the popularly called Moskovsky train station, the terminal for trains from Moscow, was built. Today it is also called St. Petersburg-Glavny.

In the early 20 th cent. there already were electric lights, replacing the previous oil and gas lamps. The first public transportation also appeared, albeit drawn by animals.

After the October Revolution of 1917, the name was changed to Avenue of the 25 th of October (from 1918 to 1944), while in World War II it was bombed several times and many buildings were destroyed. Some warning signs are current reminders of this.

It was during the 1950s and 1960s that construction work on the Metro began and the first two stations appeared. Apartments and residential buildings also multiplied.

Many annual events take place on its pavement: Victory Day (May 9), St. Petersburg Foundation Day (May 27) or the procession from the Kazan Cathedral to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, to commemorate the day of this Holy Prince every September 12, which has seen a great boom in recent years.

Because of all this, the power and beauty of the avenue remain essentially intact.

The avenue is named after Alexander Yaroslavich (Vladimir, 1220 – Gorodets, 1263), prince of Novgorod and Vladimir during the period when Russia was divided into multiple principalities subjected to the hegemony of the Mongols. He stood out in his youth for his military feats, having beaten the Swedes in the Battle of the Neva in 1240, which earned him the nickname of Nevsky.

He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church after his death and became a symbol of Russia’s national resistance against German power in Eastern Europe.

His memory has been honored by both the regime of the czars, with Peter the Great of Russia founding a convent called Alexander Nevsky in 1712 at the location of his victory against the Swedes, and by the Soviet regime, with Stalin creating a military order in his name in 1942 during World War II.

In addition, the life of Alexander Nevsky was made into a film in 1938 by Sergei Eisenstein . The Soviet director’s first sound film, it starred Russian actor Nikolay Cherkasov and the soundtrack was composed by Sergei Prokofiev.

3. Walking along Nevsky Avenue from beginning to end: what to see

First you have to keep in mind that you will find imposing buildings on both sides of the avenue, as well as bridges with a history, must-see squares and interesting monuments.

The common denominator is the variety and mixture of styles, from the 18th to the 20th centuries, including the Baroque, Classicism, eclecticism, Modernism or Constructivism.

Here is a summary of what I consider most important. I will suggest the route that leaves Palace Square, next to the Admiralty Building, which follows the principle of the numbering of the buildings. However, you can also do the tour in reverse and start at the Alexander Nevsky Bridge.

I’ve placed in parenthesis the number of the buildings on the avenue. Obviously, I will also mention the squares surrounding it.

The buildings and bridges are described in order of appearance as you walk, not by their sequential numbering, since the even numbers are not correlated with the odd ones on the opposite side, something that happens on many city streets. On the map below you can see the route, as well as each of the buildings or monuments that I will mention. Let’s get to it!

This is an unbeatable place for you to start (or end) your trip to Nevsky Prospekt without going anywhere else.

It is located in the center of the square and is dedicated to Emperor Alexander I (1801-1825). It was built between 1830 and 1834, after the Russian victory in the war against Napoleon’s invasion.

Made from red granite and the highest of its kind in the world, it is 47.5 meters high and weighs about 600 tons. It is so well grounded that it does not need to be attached to its base. The Hermitage is in this square.

Starting the tour of the avenue, it should first be noted that at number 14 there is an inscription warning of the risk of bombing during the siege of the city in World War II: “Citizens! During the bombing this side of the street is the most dangerous ». It is part of other inscriptions scattered throughout St. Petersburg.

Nevsky Avenue has been a great source of literary inspiration in the work of the great Gogol, Dostoevsky, Gorky or Leo Tolstoy.

Nikolai Gogol even has a short story that bears the name of the avenue which represents a character in itself.

The Literary Café , now a charming restaurant, is still standing (at number 18 Nevsky Avenue) and was frequented by these writers, prodigies of the Golden Age of Russian literature in the 19th cent.

I would also like to point out that on the musical side, the Italian interpreter Franco Battiato dedicated a song to the avenue entitled “Prospettiva Nevski” .

As soon as you cross the Green Bridge (Zelenyy) over the Moyka River, you will reach the Stroganov Palace from the mid-18 th cent. It is one of the best illustrations of the late Russian Baroque. It is located at the intersection of the avenue and the Moyka River. It was built for the richest family in all of Russia at that time.

It is currently part of the group of buildings of the State Russian Museum and hosts different exhibitions and musical programs. It also serves as a convention center.

The State Russian Museum , whose main building is close to the Stroganov Palace, is one of the must-sees of St. Petersburg. Established in 1895 in St. Petersburg by decree of Emperor Nicholas II, this museum collection contains more than 400,000 exhibits covering the entire history of Russian art from the 10 th century to the present.

Facing the Stroganov Palace is the Dutch Reformed Church that was built between 1834-1839 for the Dutch community in St. Petersburg. Russian classicist style. It was nationalized and closed in 1927 and today the building is used for institutional, commercial and residential purposes.

For its part, the Church of the Lutheran German Community was built between 1883 and 1888 with an important restoration completed in 1997.

The Singer House is one of the largest bookstores in Europe and the largest in St. Petersburg.

The building, constructed in 1902-1904 in the A rt Nouveau style, was the headquarters of the Singer House, known for its sewing machines, which also made uniforms for the Russian army.

After the October Revolution, it started being the headquarters of several publishers and a cultural center related to the world of books.

In front of the Singer House is the Kazan Cathedral . This architectural jewel, in the Neoclassical style, is the city’s main cathedral as it is the seat of the Orthodox Bishop of St. Petersburg. It is dedicated to the Virgin of Kazan, the most revered icon of Russia.

Emperor Paul I ordered the cathedral to be built following the model of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The construction was carried out over 10 years (from 1801 to 1811). Created by the architect Andrey Voronikhin, in a Neoclassical style, it is striking with its large colonnade formed by 96 columns that overlook the avenue itself.

Incidentally, in 1932 the cathedral was closed and the Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism in the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was opened there.

Of the Roman Catholic faith. The original Basilica of 1763-1783 with subsequent restorations.

Located on the corner of the avenue and Dumskaya Street, it has a pentagonal shape and its style is Classical. It was built between 1799 and 1804 and is very beautiful at night.

In front of the Town Hall Tower is the Grand Hotel Europe. Opened in 1875, it is a replacement for a previous hotel establishment. Its Art Nouveau style was designed in the 1910s.

Called the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe since 2004. Very elegant five-star accommodation.

Since the 19 th cent. it has attracted important personalities, such as the composers Tchaikovsky, Debussy or Stravinsky, Gustaf V of Sweden, Elton John or Jacques Chirac, former president of the French Republic.

Gostiny Dvor is the city’s oldest shopping mall and one of the oldest in the world. It has a department store with a rich history whose origins date back to the 18 th century. It overlooks several streets. Neoclassical style

Integrated Metro station with the same name added since 1967.

On Dumskaya Street, very close by, there is an underground pedestrian crossing for going to the other side of the avenue.

This church dates back to 1770-1772 and was built at the request of the Armenian community. Returned to its original use in 1993.

It is, as its name suggests, an old passage and covered shopping mall with a lot of charm, where you will enjoy the pastry and coffee shops and stores.

Its origins date back to 1848, when the city was in full swing. Its architecture featuring a glass roof is striking.

In the Elisseeff Emporium you can find Russian products such as caviar, vodka, infusions and other deli items. It is quite a touristy place and prices tend to be higher, but on the other hand these are shops that you will come upon in passing and where you can shop in greater comfort. Very nice décor.

These are located in an Art Nouveau -style building dating back to 1902-1903 and currently a commercial and entertainment complex. Architecturally, the Emporium stands out with its façade consisting mainly of an arch that is a very remarkable, huge stained glass window.

On the second floor of the Elisseeff Emporium is the Nikolay Akimov Comedy Theater of St. Petersburg (No. 56, corner of Malaya Sadovaya Street).

At the corner of the Eslisseeff Emporium is the beautiful Malaya Sadovaya pedestrian-only street , ideal if you want to take a break, have coffee, eat or enjoy one of its terraces. Has small sculptures and fountains.

In front of the Elisseeff Emporium, on the other side of the avenue, is the Monument to Catherine the Great , built in 1873 and located in one of the city’s most spectacular and solemn squares.

The statue of the empress is 13 feet tall and on the pedestal there are nine bronze figures of famous contemporaries.

3.15. National Library of Rusia (18, Sardovaya St.)

The National Library of Russia also faces Ostrovsky Square, although its registered office is at a different location. In addition, it has other locations. The building dates back to 1795, and was opened to the public in 1814 on the visit of Emperor Alexander I. It was formerly called the Imperial Public Library.

It is one of the largest libraries in the world and the second largest in Russia. It has about 38 million documents, among which there are 17 million books.

Nearby, on the same Sardovaya Street, there is an underground pedestrian crossing to get to the other side of Nevsky Avenue.

The Alexandrinsky Theater was founded in 1756 by the daughter of Peter the Great, Empress Isabel, as one of the first theater companies in the country.

The theater’s current headquarters building dates back to 1832 and is the work of the renowned Carlo Rossi.

A dazzling façade and interior décor in a distinct imperial style. It has provided many glory days for the Russian performing arts.

Also known as the Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theater, in honor of this famous poet, playwright and novelist born in Moscow who died in St. Petersburg.

Built between 1741 and 1754, the Anichkov Palace was conceived in the Baroque style, but it soon became Neoclassical. It was the place where Russia’s last czar, Nicholas II, spent his childhood.

The Palace is part of a historical and architectural complex that includes a scientific high school as well as an important children’s and youth educational center.

The Anichkov Bridge crosses the Fontanka River on Nevsky Avenue. It allows vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

It contains four incredible statues of horses tamed by a human being, which were installed on the bridge in 1851. They were the work of Pyotr Klodt who also created the equestrian statue of Nicholas I in St. Isaac’s Square or the sensational quadriga on the porch of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.

In the Second World War, its four statues were protected from German bombing by being buried in land near the Anichkov Palace.

The Beloselsky Palace is neo-Baroque with a Rococo interior whose origins go back to 1747. It is situated at the intersection of the avenue and the Fontanka River and just past the Anichkov Bridge.

With a purplish pink façade, it was renovated in the 19th century as an architectural mirror of the Stroganov Palace. It is currently used as a municipal cultural center, it hosts small-scale chamber concerts.

3.19. Moskovsky or St. Petersburg-Glavvny train station (No. 85 or Vosstaniya Square)

The Moskovsky train station dates back to 1844-1851 and is the main station in St. Petersburg, the first thing many first-time visitors to the city come into contact with. Its appearance is linked to the first rail route between the two most important cities in Russia.

Up until 1924 it bore the name Nikolayevskiy, in honor of Nicholas I of Russia.

Today, for example, it’s the end of the line for “Sapsan”, the high-speed day train which covers the nearly 700 km between Moscow and St. Petersburg in about 4 hours or the terminal of the Red Arrow sleeper train .

Connected to the St. Petersburg Metro at the Mayakovskaya and Ploshchad Vosstaniya stations.

Next to the train station, although on Ligovsky Avenue, is one of the largest shopping centers in the city, Galeria St. Petersburg , with lots of shops and restaurants.

Two accommodations that I recommend and that will not disappoint you, in the middle of Nevsky Avenue and just 5 minutes from Moskovsky Station, are the Park Inn by Radisson Nevsky (4 stars) and the Radisson Royal Hotel St. Petersburg (5 stars).

In front of the train station in Vosstaniya Square you will find the Leningrad Hero City Obelisk , a granite monolith with a total height of 36 meters.

It was installed in 1985 to commemorate the Russian victory over German forces in World War II. It is topped with a gold star. Leningrad was the official name of St. Petersburg from 1924 until 1991.

From here you have to turn a little to the right to continue along Nevsky Avenue and in about 25 minutes you will reach Alexander Nevsky Square.

In Alexander Nevsky Square you will find the monument to the guardian prince of St. Petersburg, an equestrian statue weighing nine tons and almost nine meters tall, which was erected in 2002.

The Alexander Nevsky Monastery was the city’s first monastery. It is located a few minutes from the avenue, going towards the Monastyrka River. It is an Orthodox monastery for monks.

It dates back to the 1710s when the Church of the Annunciation, the embryo of the future monastery, started. A clear example of the Petrine Baroque.

The two patrons of St. Petersburg are Peter the Great and St. Alexander Nevsky. The monastery is available for visits and is a center for pilgrimages. In the cemeteries attached to it rest public figures in Russian history such as F. Dostoevsky or P. I. Tchaikovsky.

The Alexander Nevsky Bridge beyond the avenue will mark the end of your tour (or the beginning if you start there). It is situated next to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery and was completed in 1965.

Absolutely functional design and nothing significant to note except its length of 906 meters that up until 2004 made it the city’s longest bridge. It was surpassed by the Great Obukhovsky Bridge.

It accommodates six lanes of traffic and has beautiful lighting. It is one of the drawbridges that you can enjoy during the famous White Nights of St. Petersburg .

4. Riding along Nevsky Avenue in public transportation

If you don’t want to tour the entire avenue on foot (I know it’s very long), you have the option of using public transit that runs along it and that connects the whole city, by Metro, bus and trolleybus, as well as with the Moskovsky train station already mentioned. Taxis are also available.

Bus routes 24 and 191, as well as trolleybuses 1 and 22, run along the entire avenue. There used to be a tram and the possibility of re-introducing it is being studied.

It is also travelling that route is the city’s tourist bus, for which you can buy tickets on this website .

The 5 lines of the St. Petersburg Metro pass along or cross Nevsky Avenue, although the line that runs along the avenue from beginning to end is Green Line number 3, with three stops:

Nevsky Prospekt, more towards the beginning of the avenue (near the Kazan Cathedral).
Mayakovskaya, near the Moskovsky train station.
Ploshchad Alexandra Nevskogo, right at the end of the avenue.
