Shopping has always been my way to de-stress from a chaotic life. Lately, I have been all too consumed with my university examinations. All I ever did was wake up, study, eat and sleep. So, when my exams concluded last week, I decided to head out and indulge in some inane shopping.

I had no idea what I wanted to buy, but I headed to the city's most famous street market. It is situated in the city's heart, at the 14th crossroad.

The market is a dream location for a shopping enthusiast like me. The lanes are covered with small shops selling all kinds of material products that you can think of. There is something for everyone- from clothes to decorative material for the house!

The street market is primarily known for its book shops. There are five shops in a row, all selling second-hand books at meager prices.

The yellow foxed pages of old classics have a magic of their own. What's even more remarkable is the annotations on the book's margins. Knowing that someone else read this book and scribbled their thoughts on the side allows me to connect with a stranger. It's an inexplicable feeling.

So, every time I visit this beautiful market, I make sure to stop by one of the book shops and buy at least one hardcover. I bought three books this time and was the happiest while returning home.

I absolutely love visiting this market. It's always bustling with so much energy- both the enthusiastic vendors and the curious customers. It's my comfort place, and I can't wait to go there again!

I have never been the kind of person who was keen on going to shopping malls and checking out products from high-end brands. They are costly, and I don't find spending in favor of big corporations ideal.

Hence, every time I have to wish to shop, I pick up my bag and run to the nearby street market. It's one of the most famous places in our city. It features vendors who offer everything from clothes, books, and shoes to kitchen crockery and decorative house items. But it is most famous for its street food. There stands a small hawker selling the most delicious snacks or finger-licking food at every corner.

Besides the delicious and spicy food, the market is famous for selling affordable clothes. If you maintain them well, the clothes may even last years. It's better than spending on big brands that already have mammoth earnings.

Going to this street market indeed requires a lot of patience and strength, though. It's always bustling with an energetic crowd, and it's extremely noisy, too. There's always someone stepping on your toes, and it's a struggle to get any vendor to hear you.

Although visiting the street market is straining yet, I never come back empty-handed. I adore this little street market and plan to go back soon!

Street markets face tough competition from gigantic shopping malls featuring all the well-renowned brands. Yet, the emotional connection that local vendors can create with the target market is incomparable. Moreover, local vendors often use very sustainable practices instead of big brands, and their products are also of good quality. Hence, I believe spending money to help someone earn a living is always better than investing it in an already established big brand.

Is online shopping better than shopping at a street market?

Both online and offline shopping serve advantages of their own. Online shopping allows you to buy products without ever coming out from the comfort of your house. On the other hand, going to a street market and shopping will allow you to buy more for less. It also offers a chance to explore underrated goods that might not be available online. So, a mix of both shopping styles is perfect, in my opinion.

Big brands vs. street vendors- whose products are better?

The quality of a branded product might be slightly better, but the company ethics can sometimes be questionable. Moreover, they demand quite a hefty price. On the other hand, street market vendors fairly price their products and offer decent quality most of the time.

The Landscape of Consumption. Shopping Streets and Cultures in Western Europe, 1600-1900 (Palgrave 2014). Edited with Cle Lesger

This volume brings together research on retailing and shopping and their embeddedness in urban space, themes that have attracted wide interest in recent decades. Addressing these themes over an era that bridges the early modern and modern period, the authors argue that the 'modernity' of the nineteenth century is often overemphasised, at the expense of recognising the continuities with the earlier period and the degree of innovation that took place before the onset of 'modernity'. This collection compares long-term developments in retail locations, retailing formats, regulation of shopping streets, and the cult of shopping for pleasure across a number of neighbouring countries and regions (Britain, France, Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands), and offers surprising new insights into the processes of cultural transfer, appropriation and exchange.

Introduction

Tough competition has been raging for some time between the local traditional markets and the gigantic malls. A huge number of malls are being constructed all over India and shortly, we will find malls at every step. Nowadays almost everyone wants to use good quality branded products, fresh food, and other everyday items. People also want to save money but at the same time want good things for a less price. They want a shopping place where all the required items they want to buy are available. However, if they buy items, especially food items, from a local shop it is much fresher. Therefore, although the importance of local traditional shopping places is slowly declining, there are still a huge number of people who cannot afford to shop from the malls. In addition, most of the shopkeepers cannot meet the expense of putting up a shop in a mall and have to stick to the local markets.

To understand why there has been a shift in this agglomeration format (AF), we need to consider a customer’s viewpoint. This AF factor specifies certain characteristics seen in customers and compares them with their effects on the agglomeration attractiveness. This is followed by the development of a theoretical framework empirically examined using an Internet-based survey of several consumers. (Munck, 2003).

At the very beginning the local shops or bazaars, as we know it, were present in many of the Indian cities and towns and mainly sold fruits and vegetables. Soon the areas around them started to sell steel utensils, stationery, groceries, clothes, and many other things. Soon there developed several different types of bazaars. A vegetable bazaar is a market building, a street bazaar is in the nearby neighborhood, a wholesale market is where people get things at a very low price and a temple bazaar is situated in the center of an old city, which sells almost everything, from flowers to instruments.

A mall is a more developed and organized bazaar. Unlike the local markets, we do not have to bargain with the vendors for a particular item. However, some people enjoy going to the local bazaar as it allows them to bargain. We also find all of our required items under one roof. Therefore, it saves a lot of time. In Asian, South America, and African countries, the tradition has shifted from local bazaars to malls mainly in the urban and more developed areas. A mall has achieved a much advanced level and is more appealing than the local markets. It can meet all the commercial needs of the people and satisfy them completely. Local markets are more flexible as they keep on changing daily keeping the demands of the customers in mind whereas the malls more or less remain the same and only keep changing their offers. The stature of the malls also increases due to their novelty and it becomes a prestige issue having a store in a luxurious mall. (Ledwith, 2005).

Shopping malls have been classified keeping several points in mind, which includes their size, the area and people it attends to, and so on. They can be local, regional, or super regional. Some are even called Big Box, as they are huge individual stores, which specifically keep a certain range of products, in huge volumes. They have been built since the early 20th century, with the upcoming of urban areas. However, we cannot imagine any city without its famous street markets. They satisfy the requirements of not only the locals but also several foreigners who come to India looking for ethnic places like them. They do not show any improvement in technology and do not bother about the future economy. Thus, we cannot ignore a special place, which these local markets hold in our hearts. (Mahoney, 2004).

Of late, we can see a revival in the number of street malls. A huge number of streets have started emerging on the streets to create a people-friendly and much more appealing environment. The shopping centers are day-by-day increasing in size including huge open-air and underground car parking areas, movie theatres, food centers, and places for people to sit, chat and relax. They are clean with high security and sometimes even conduct fashion shows and other interactive events for the people. With the upcoming of these huge shopping centers, we have also seen that the previous shopping behavior of the customers has changed.

Some of the operators of the posh shopping centers have restricted the entries of potential customers by enforcing certain conditions like only those people with credit cards or mobile phones will be allowed to enter the premises of the mall. Some even demand a proper dress code among the customers. The mall operators sometimes even demand higher parking fees than the actual one imposed. The rentals for occupying space in these huge shopping malls are very high and sometimes the shopkeepers cannot keep up with it. Thus, the question of whether these shopping malls can operate productively and survive in India is being frequently asked. (OECD, 2006).

We have also noticed that most of the potential shoppers who visit the shopping malls are just casual observers who barely even buy anything from the malls; either because they cannot afford it or that they never came intending to shop at all. This also indicates that their initial enthusiasm for shopping from these attractive malls has slowly diminished and they are thus, going back to their original shopping destinations. In addition, as there are so many malls all over the country completion is also very high among them.

The ratio of people buying from the street shops and those from the huge malls is very high as the former is much more affordable. In addition, customer loyalty plays a big part. The shopkeepers cannot expect customers to be loyal to them overnight. However, the big brands have this advantage as they have the nationwide brand recognition to support them. Thus, this improves the operation of the various outlets in the malls. Having movie halls and eateries can also be disadvantageous at times. Sometimes people visit the malls only to watch a movie or just to hang out with friends over coffee and not to shop.

Although it is being continuously said that with the development of more and more malls the traditional street shops will disappear, it will not be the case. (Porter, 2008) Shop rents in the malls are high and most shopkeepers will not be able to afford it. Thus, they will stick to the local market. In Asia, Africa, and Latin America, there are still a huge number of people below the poverty line who cannot visit the malls for their daily requirements.

Furthermore, the quality of products in supermarkets and shopping malls is trustworthy and superior to those from traditional outlets. This requires manufacturers to make every effort to innovate their production lines and enhance their product quality in order to compete against other rivals to attract more customers . This would then benefit the end users.

Last but not least, a large shopping center accommodates various service-oriented features and activities other than merely retailing goods . To be more specific, consumers can enjoy children’s playgrounds, virtual reality games, or movies in incorporated cineplexes. This would result in a satisfying shopping experience , thus obtaining an increase in returning visits.

To conclude, since supermarkets offer shoppers with reasonably-priced and high-quality products with wonderful experiences, I believe the prevalence of supermarkets is a positive development.

The prevalence of shopping malls is spreading at a significant pace as such establishments are becoming common not only in metropolitan cities but in small towns as well. The inclination of the present generation, especially the youth, towards visiting shopping centres for nearly all their requirements is quite evident in the amount of footfall that such places receive even on a weekday. Although there is a debate on the nature of this trend and the possible outcomes it will have on society, I believe that the rising popularity of shopping marts is a favourable occurrence.

One of the prime benefits that supermarkets offer customers, and compel them to visit such markets over local outlets is the degree of convenience. The basic idea of a shopping mall is to offer a diverse array of stores to meet a variety of customer demands. From clothing, electronics, household appliances to even furniture, retailers of all kinds of merchandise are housed under a single roof when it comes to shopping complexes.

Moreover, such marketplaces are known to accommodate and partner with premium brands only. The retail stores present in shopping malls are typically part of a multinational corporation or an international chain of stores. Thus, the quality of the products offered in such places is undoubtedly superior as they are manufactured and processed under a sophisticated system to meet the standards of the global market.

Nevertheless, the surge in the volume of shopping centres is indeed a threat to indigenous traders and businesses. However, such developments are inevitable and we must accept them as a part of modernisation.

Finally, I would like to say that people have always valued convenience and variety when it comes to shopping and since shopping complexes can offer both at the same time, their widespread presence can be deemed advantageous.

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many would argue that an individual’s shopping habits depend more on age demographics than other factors. In my opinion, age is relevant in terms of a person’s tastes, however social class is a greater determiner.

Those who would argue in favor of age point out how a person’s preferences are largely fixed. The past several decades have witnessed seismic changes in culture, particularly related to technology. A person who grew up before the digital age is more inclined to spend money on books, holidays, furniture, and other non-digital items. The style of these items is also likely to be more traditional and less modern. However, someone under the age of 40, is more likely to spend on a new phone, electronic vehicle such as a Tesla, or clothing and furniture that is more modern and minimalist. These disparities widen when considering the youngest generations who are even more inclined to value the virtual world through purchases such as NFTs and cryptocurrencies.

However, for the majority of major purchases, wealth determines what a person can afford and therefore buy. This is evident for a variety of products ranging from food and wellness items to technology and fashion. For instance, most individuals would love to buy the newest smartphone when it is released, drive in a luxury car and shop for expensive and healthy organic products at the supermarket. However, one’s financial status will either allow a person to express these desires or force them to live frugally. The best evidence for this is the lack of discretion children show when it comes to shopping. They are uninhibited by financial concerns and therefore attempt to buy whatever they like.

In conclusion, despite the clear differences in taste present in individuals or different generations, financial flexibility is the clearest factor influencing a person’s shopping habits. This has been true for most of history and still remains the case today.

A shopper’s age is the most important factor in defining their habits of shopping rather than any other factor. I do not concur with the above statement. Although a person’s age influences what they should purchase, financial status has a profound impact on the final purchase decision. This essay will elucidate points to support my perspective in the forthcoming paragraphs.

Age demographics are crucial in identifying the purchasing behaviours of customers. Marketing companies, therefore, target age specific audiences to sell products as per their characteristics. College students are usually buying things like books, smartphones, and junk food. Also, fashion clothes are popular among teenagers since they want to keep abreast of the latest trends. They always purchase new clothes when there is a discount or promotion going on. Likewise, middle-aged or family people might shop for furniture, baby products, and investment schemes. Because of this information, corporations are not only able to design their products but also market them accordingly to achieve an optimal sales level.

Having said this, the amount of money people have makes people decide whether or not to buy things. If a person is not able to afford basic needs, then he may not want to buy items that are secondary in need. Having lots of wealth will enable people to buy anything they dream of, be it vacation packages or expensive medical treatments. On the other hand, impoverished people cannot purchase goods that are exorbitant or frequently indulge in paid activities offering pleasure or care, even though they want to. They normally do window shopping to satisfy their shopping urge or save for months prior to buying luxury products. Hence, only those with an ample sum of money can shop as per their desire.

In conclusion, while people’s age groups can help to categorize products that they may purchase, the amount of money available with them will ultimately determine the person’s shopping habits. Age is also an influential factor, but it is not more important than the purchasing power of a person.

There is a statement that shopping habits are related to age. In my opinion, age is not the most important reason for shopping habits. People with different economic conditions and sexes would buy different cargos when they are the same age.

The capacity of buying depends on the money that the buyer owns. People would have different preferences when they are in different economic conditions, instead of different ages. With different fortune, people would likely consider different issues. A rich person may only want to spend money and receive happiness, while a poor man needs to consider the expenditure of other parts of his life, such as food and electricity fees. For example, for those who are about 20 years old and need to buy a car, a rich person may want to buy a car with outstanding appearance and extraordinary power, like a super sports car. A poor man may want a comfortable car with low consumption of fuel.

The other issue that has a great influence on shopping habits is sex. It is clear that females and males generally have different preferences at the same age. The main reason may be because society assigns different personalities to boys and girls. Let us take the car as an example again. For kids who are choosing a toy car, a boy may want the bat man battle car, because it is powerful. On the contrary, a girl who is hoping to be a princess would likely prefer a pink and romantic car with a prince in it.

In sum, age does not have the most significant influence on shopping habits. People of the same age with different fortune and sexes would make different decisions when shopping. Moreover, shopping habits also relate to education and health conditions.

Tverskaya Area in Moscow

Tverskaya is the main street of Moscow, it starts from the Kremlin and goes north through all Moscow to change into Leningradskoe shosse, which leads to Tver and after 700 km to St. Petersburg. Tverskaya street is a wide central avenue bustling with life, with large buildings on the sides where there are various shops, clubs, cafes, and restaurants inside. However, the life around Tverskaya (small streets, boulevards around) is quite calm, and it's one of the nicest areas to walk around or to go out in Moscow.

About 300 years ago Tverskaya was the area where rich Moscovitans liked to build their residences. There were many beautiful buildings on the street, boasting great architecture and beautiful interiors. The street was quite narrow, but very long, even in the old times. In the 20th century, during the communist reign, all the buildings were taken from the nobles, and most of them were destructed and rebuilt in the new 'Stalinist' monumental style. There was a need to widen the street, because it was so central. Nobody knows for sure how they did it, however most of the people say that Soviet engineers put all the buildings on steel balls and actually 'rolled' them away from each other.

A nice area to walk around is Tverskoi Boulevard , which is just outside metro Tverskaya (green) or Pushkinskaya (violet) exit. This boulevard used to be the favourite walking street for Moscow intellectuals and elite in the 19th century. There's even a monument to the two Russian poets who liked to walk there: Pushkin and Esenin. Pushkinskaya square (metro Pushkinskaya, Tverskaya, Tchekhovskaya) is the heart of Moscow entertainment: if you are not sure what to do, start from here. At least you're next to the major metro hub.

The Hermitage garden (metro Tchekhovskaya -grey line) is the home for New Opera house, and a refreshing green place in the busy Moscow centrum. Another famous area is Patriarshi Ponds (metro Mayakovskaya (green) or Tverskaya), where Mikhail Bulgakov's 'Master and Margarita' novel took place. The ponds, now an expensive residential area and a favourite hangout for Moscovitans used to be a swamp and a gazing field for goats 200 years ago. Also, between Patriarshi Ponds and Tverskaya street, there are many buildings made in 'Art Niveaux' style. Mayakovskaya square (Mayakovskaya metro) is a smaller variant of Pushkinskaya square: also many places to eat, cafes, some interesting contemporary art and photo galleries. Novoslobodskaya area is a quiet residential area in the centrum, so there are many supermarkets, small restaurants and shops. Belorusskaya square is a one of the main transport hubs, there's Belorusski railway station, some expensive hotels, and a lot of cafes. That's where Tverskaya changes into Leningradki prospekt, that leads to the direction of Sheremetyevo II airport and St Petersburg.

Also, it a great idea just to walk around many streets around Tverskaya . They are really diverse and give some special feeling of Moscow: clean, dirty, strange, quiet.

Mom faces backlash for explaining why she doesn’t return her shopping cart at the grocery store

A mom caused a TikTok scandal by saying she doesn’t always return her shopping cart at the grocery store in a viral video.

“I’m not returning my shopping cart and you can judge me all you want,” Dr. Leslie Dobson, a clinical and forensic psychologist in California, said in a TikTok video with 11 million views. “I’m not getting my groceries into my car, getting my children into the car and then leaving them in the car to go return the cart. So, if you’re going to give me a dirty look, f--- off.”

Many complained that Dobson was being inconsiderate to grocery store employees; others agreed with her.

“My sister has 5 kids and still puts her cart in the corral.”
“Small things like this is what shows character in a person. I am not a parent but even if it’s raining or snowing, I return my cart.”
“I have the worst trouble with this ... the return things are ROWS away. I’m not leaving my baby in the car where I can’t see it.”
“How did your kids get to the shopping cart safely? Did you leave them in the car alone and go get the cart? Or were they portable enough to make it without a cart?”
“Collecting carts is one of the few human jobs left so I leave mine in the parking lot.”
“It was never about the shopping cart. It’s about the principle. It’s about answering the question: Am I willing to take some time out of my day to do something nice for nothing in return?”
“I agree with you 100%.”
“Single mom here!! So what I do is put the groceries in the car. Leave the children in the shopping cart. Take the shopping cart back with the children. Return them back to the car.”
“I park next to the cart return thingy.”
“I lock my kid in the car for all of the 20 seconds it takes me to put the cart back and walk to the car. It’s literally a few seconds of them alone in the car. Safely and locked.”
“If you can get the cart, you can return the cart.”

Many people mentioned “the shopping cart theory,” an unofficial theory that people who don’t return their trolleys have poor character.

Dobson tells TODAY.com that she posted the video “because predators watch our patterns and routines and I wanted to give people permission to not return their carts if their intuition tells them they aren’t safe.”

In fact, stranger abduction is very, very rare. According to an analysis of FBI data by Reuters, thousands of minors are reported missing each year and only .1% of those cases are the result of stranger abduction. FBI data shows that children are far more likely to be abducted or molested by a family member or someone known to the parents.

Dobson adds that leaving the kids alone in the car, even momentarily, is not something she will ever do.

She says the tone of her video was intentionally provocative “to grab attention” for awareness.

“I don’t love talking to pedophiles but if I can share how they think and how they target people, then I will take one for the team because I have the eduction and capacity to do so,” she says.

Dobson tells TODAY.com that people should assess the outside lighting, the design of the parking lot and the presence of security cameras or store guards. And, she says, moms should always trust their gut.

Janette Fennell, the president and founder of Kids and Car Safety tells TODAY.com that tragedies involving children in parking lots include car accidents and abduction. According to the organization, in 2022 , more than 250 children were inside cars alone when they were stolen.

“Although the victims of these types of incidents typically survive, it is incredibly traumatizing for everyone involved,” states the Kids and Cars Safety website . “Incidents like this are very easily avoidable by never leaving a child alone in a vehicle.”

Fennell advises that parents park as close as possible to the cart collection area to minimize inconvenience.

Dobson says “the shopping cart theory” is “ridiculous” because it reduces a person’s character to one simple act. She says, “I always return my shopping cart when my kids aren’t with me.”

Is it immoral to not return a shopping cart?

“There is a big class of literature on whether or not people decide to cooperate when no one is looking,” Kurt Gray, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, tells TODAY.com.

“The reason this topic is so contentious is because it’s kind of ambiguous — there’s room for interpretation,” he says. “My work argues that morality and ethics come down to perceptions of harm. Is someone causing or preventing harm by these acts?”

Dobson points out the potential danger of returning her cart, however, some prioritize the harm in not doing so, says Gray.

He refers to “The dilemma of the commons,” the idea that common resources may be destroyed if exploited by the public.

There might be minimal harm if one person doesn’t return their cart, says Gray, but if no one returns their cart, the consequences are bigger.

The Journal also reported that more recently, in a meeting on Ukraine funding in January, Biden “spoke so softly at times that some participants struggled to hear him,” and read from notes “to make obvious points, paused for extended periods and sometimes closed his eyes for so long that some in the room wondered whether he had tuned out.”

Scarborough challenged the account, noting other reporting that McCarthy had told allies that he had found Biden “to be mentally sharp in meetings.” Scarborough noted that after the May in-person meeting at the White House, McCarthy was publicly praiseworthy of the progress made, calling it “better than any other time we’ve had discussions.”

“I have repeatedly stated on air that I am an avid reader and cheerleader for the WSJ,” Scarborough wrote on X/Twitter. “That is what makes this false, biased story so disappointing. It is underminded immediately by the massive weight on on-the-record contradictions.”

The White House also pushed back against the piece shortly after it was posted on Wednesday evening. Ben LaBolt, the White House communications director, wrote on X/Twitter that the piece was an “utter editorial fail.”

LaBolt wrote, “What a surprise – Republicans employing their election year messaging strategy that contradicts their own prior words about @POTUS . Gambling in Casablanca!”

But Pelosi was among the lawmakers who complained that they spent time with the Journal to offer their accounts, but instead the publication “ignored testimony by Democrats, focused on attacks by Republicans and printed a hit piece.”

The Journal piece noted that it was based on interviews with more than 45 people over several months. “The interviews were with Republicans and Democrats who either participated in meetings with Biden or were briefed on them contemporaneously, including administration officials and other Democrats who found no fault in the president’s handling of the meetings,” according to the story. “Most of those who said Biden performed poorly were Republicans, but some Democrats said that he showed his age in several of the exchanges.”

A spokesperson for the publication said, “The Journal stands by its reporting.”

Polls have shown that voters have significant concerns about Biden’s age, and to a lesser extent, of Trump’s. At 81, Biden is the oldest president, even though Trump, 77, is not too much younger.

Biden arrived in Paris today, part of a trip that includes as speech at Normandy on Thursday to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Last month, Emma Tucker, the new editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal, gathered the newsroom to share a blunt message: The media industry had morphed “beyond recognition” and The Journal needed to adapt, or be left behind.

“We don’t want to be the German car industry of news publishing,” she joked to the hundreds of staff members listening.

Ms. Tucker, who took over as top editor in February, was addressing a group that had been, to a large degree, tentatively optimistic about their energetic new boss. But many were also unnerved by the speed of the changes she had already made to traditions some viewed as core to the character and success of The Journal, one of the world’s premier business publications.

At least 15 veteran editors and writers have left the paper in recent months. Long-held stylistic practices, such as the use of courtesy titles in articles, were disposed of overnight. The Journal’s chief enterprise editor, who had veto power over which big investigative pieces were published and which were discarded, was pushed out.

In the meeting with the newsroom on Sept. 21, a recording of which was obtained by The New York Times, Ms. Tucker signaled that more changes were ahead as she oriented the outlet to better serve a digital audience and tried to shake off what she viewed as unnecessary stuffiness.

The goal, she told them, is to add many new online subscribers by delivering readers expertise and “distinctive” journalism. The organization faces ever-declining print circulation, lower social media traffic and strong competitors, she said, but its current mostly male and older subscriber base means there is a “robust” market of possible new readers.
