1950-54 మధ్య కల్కి అనే తమిళ పత్రికలో ధారావాహికంగా ప్రచురితమైన కృష్ణమూర్తి రాసిన నవల ఇది. తర్వాత దాన్ని అచ్చువేసి నవలగా అమ్మితే లక్షలాది కాపీలు దశాబ్దాల తరబడి అమ్ముడుపోయాయి. కల్కి పత్రికలో రాసి ఫేమస్ అయినందువల్ల రచయిత పేరు కల్కి కృష్ణమూర్తిగా స్థిరపడిపోయింది. 

ఇది ఆధునిక తమిళ సాహిత్యంలో చిరస్మరణీయంగా నిలిచిపోయే చారిత్రాత్మక గాధ. అసలు కథకి కొన్ని కల్పనలు అద్ది 50 కి పై చిలుకు ప్రధాన పాత్రలతో ఉత్కంఠభరితంగా మలిచిన 2000 పైచిలుకు పేజీల నవల ఇది. 

ఎప్పటి నుంచో సినిమాగా తీసే వీలున్నా అన్నేసి పాత్రలతో సినిమా తీసే వ్యయప్రయాసలకు బెదిరి ఇంతవరకూ ఎవ్వరూ ముట్టుకోలేదు. కానీ భారీ బడ్జెట్ సినిమా స్థాయిని పెంచిన బాహుబలి ఫలితాన్ని చూసాక ఈ చిత్రాన్ని నిర్మించే ధైర్యం కలిగింది మణిరత్నం బృందానికి. 

బాహుబలి కథకి కూడా ఈ పొన్నియన్ సెల్వం లో కొన్ని మూలాలు కనిపిస్తాయి. కథగా పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ బాహుబలికి కొంతవరకు స్ఫూర్తి అనుకుంటే, సినిమాగా తయారవడానికి మాత్రం బాహుబలే పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ కి స్ఫూర్తి. 

ఇంతకీ పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ అంటే కావేరీపుత్రుడు అని అర్థం. కావేరీ నది ఒడ్డున ఉన్న చోళరాజులందరూ పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ లే. కానీ ఆ పేరు రాజరాజచోళుడికే స్థిరపడిపోయింది. ఆ రాజరాజచోళుడే ఈ నవలానాయకుడు. అతని అసలు పేరు అరుళ్ మొళి. అతనే పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్. జయం రవి పోషించిన పాత్ర అదే. 

ఈ అరుళ్ మొళికి (జయం రవి) ఒక అక్క కుందవి(త్రిష), ఆ పైన ఒక అన్న ఆదిత్య కరికాలన్ (విక్రం) ఉంటారు. ఆదిత్య మహాయోధుడు. కుందవి రాజతంత్రం తెలిసిన తెలివైన యువరాణి. ఈ ముగ్గురికి తండ్రి సుందర చోళుడు (ప్రకాష్ రాజ్). 

ఆదిత్య కి చిన్ననాటి ప్రేమికురాలు నందిని (ఐష్వర్యా రాయ్). ఇద్దరికీ కొన్ని కారణాల వలన వివాహం జరగదు. కానీ ఆమె అదే రాజ్యంలో వయసులో తనకన్నా చాలా పెద్దవాడైనా ఆర్థికమంత్రిని (శరత్ కుమార్) పెళ్లి చేసుకుని కొంత స్థాయిని పొందుతుంది. ఆమెది ఒక రకంగా విలన్ పాత్ర. చోళ సింహాసనం మీద ఆమెకి కన్నుంటుంది. అది ఒక సన్నివేశంలో దర్శకుడు సింబాలిక్ గా చూపించాడు. ఆ సింహాసనాన్ని పొందడానికి తనకున్న అడ్డంకులు తొలగించుకోవాలనే ఆలోచనలో ఆమె ఉందని ప్రేక్షకుడికి అనిపిస్తుంది. 

ఈ మాత్రం కథ చెప్పుకోకపోతే చూస్తున్నప్పుడు చాలామందికి అర్థం కాకపోవడానికే అవకాశమెక్కువ. పైగా ఈ కథ తెలిస్తేనే చూసేటప్పుడు మెదడుకి తక్కువ పని పడుతుంది. ఇంతవరకూ కథలోని సస్పెన్సులేవీ రివీల్ చేయలేదు. అన్నీ పార్ట్ 2 లోనే. 

ఈ కథలోని తమిళ పేర్లు గుర్తుపెట్టుకోవడం చాలా కష్టం. ఎవరు ఎవరికి ఏమౌతారు, ఎవరి బంధుత్వాలు ఏవిటి అనేది అర్థం కావటానికే సమయం తీసుకుంటే కొన్ని ప్రధాన పాత్రలకి అసలు నామం కాసేపు, బిరుదు కాసేపు వాడుతుండడం మెదడుకి మరింత పని పెడుతుంది. 

మహాభారతంలో ఎన్ని కుట్రలు కుతంత్రాలు ఉంటాయో ఈ నవలలో కూడా అంతే. ఎవరు ఎవరికి శత్రువో, ఎవరి ఎత్తుగడ దేని కొసమో అర్థం చేసుకుంటూ ముందుకెళ్లాలి. 9 వ శతాబ్దం నాటి ఈ కథని తెరమీద అత్యంత భారీగా చూపించారు. చూస్తున్నంతసేపూ విజువల్ గా శతాబ్దాల నాటి ప్రపంచంలో ఉన్న అనుభూతి వస్తుంది. ప్రతి చిన్న డీటైల్ ని చక్కగా మలిచారు. పడవలు తెరచేపాలు ఎత్తడం, దించడం దగ్గర్నుంచి ఏనుగు సవారీలు, గుర్రపు స్వారీలకు సంబంధించిన మైన్యూట్ డీటైలింగ్ కూడా చేయడం ప్రశంసార్హం. చాలాకాలం తర్వాత తెరమీద అత్యంత ఖరీదైన సినిమా చూస్తున్న ఫీలింగొస్తుంది. కారణం విజువల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ కొంత, తారాగణం ఇంకొంత. 

మణిరత్నం, రెహ్మాన్ కాంబినేషన్ కి ఒక ప్రత్యేకత ఉంది. చాలా గ్యాప్ తర్వాత వచ్చిన బ్లెండ్ అది. ఒక తరంలో ఒక ఊపు ఊపినా ప్రస్తుతం ఎ.ఆర్.రెహ్మాన్ ఆకట్టుకోవడంలో చాలా వెనుకబడ్డాడని ఈ సినిమా చూస్తే తెలుస్తుంది. కీరవాణి, దేవీశ్రీప్రసాద్, తమన్ లు ఈ మధ్యన చేస్తున్న బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ తో పోల్చి చూస్తే రెహ్మాన్ చిన్నగా కనిపిస్తున్నాడు. ఎక్కడా ఉత్కంఠని కలుగచేసే నేపథ్యసంగీతం వినపడలేదు. అత్యంత సాధారణంగా ఉంది. ఇక పాటలైతే దారుణం. అరవపాటకీ తెలుగుపాటకీ పెద్ద తేడా వినిపించలేదు. అదెంత అర్థమౌతుందో ఇదీ అంతే అన్నట్టుంది. చెవులు రెక్కించుకుని నొసట్లు చిట్లించి పాటలో ఎముందో శ్రద్ధగా వింటే కొన్ని పదాలు బోధపడవచ్చేమో కానీ అలవోకగా మాత్రం చెవుల్ని, మనసుని చేరవు. ఈ పరిస్థితికి డబ్బింగ్ సమస్యతో పాటూ సంగీతలోపం, "మెత్తని" లాంటి పదాల్ని "మెత్ హాని" అని పలికిన గాయకుల లోపం కూడా కొంత కారణం. 

టెక్నికల్ గా కెమెరా, ఎడిటింగ్, విజువల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్, మేకప్, ఆర్ట్ డిపార్ట్మెంట్స్ కి నూటికి నూరు మార్కులేయొచ్చు. ఎక్కడా వంకలు కనపడవు. 

సంభాషణల విషయానికొస్తే మాటి మాటికీ ధ్వనించే అరవ పేర్ల వల్ల ఇబ్బందిగా ఉంటుంది కానీ, తనికెళ్ల భరణి కలం చాలా గ్యాప్ తర్వాత బాగానే పలికింది. డబ్బింగ్ కనుక లిప్ సింక్ కి బాగా ప్రాధాన్యతిచ్చి శ్రద్ధగా రాసినట్టున్నాయి పదాలు. ముఖ్యంగా "మట్టికి తలవంచిన వాడు ఆకాశమంత ఎత్తుకి ఎదుగుతాడు" లాంటి లైన్స్ కొన్ని గుర్తుండేలా ఉన్నాయి. అలాగే కార్తికి, ఐశ్వర్యారాయ్ కి మధ్యన జరిగే సంభాషణ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. తనికెళ్ళ భరణి డబ్బింగ్ చెప్పడం వల్ల నంబి పాత్ర ఒక్కటీ తెలుగు నేటివిటీకి దగ్గరగా అనిపించింది. అయితే ఒకచోట శోభితా ధూళిపాళ పాత్ర త్రిషని "అక్కా!" అని సంబోధించడం వల్ల వరసలు మారిపోయి అసలే అర్థం కాని పాత్రల్ని మరింత అయోమయంలోకి నెడుతుంది. ఇటువంటి విషయాల్లో భరణి లాంటి సీనియర్ రచయిత జాగ్రత్త తీసుకుని ఉండాల్సింది. 

యాక్షన్ ఎపిసోడ్స్ చిత్రీకరణ ఎంత బాగున్నా బాహుబలిలో ఆ స్థాయి సన్నివేశాలు చూసేయడం వల్ల కొత్త అనుభూతి కలుగదు. క్లైమాక్స్ లో వచ్చే నౌకాయుద్ధం మాత్రం బాగుంది. 

కథ కొంత వరకూ తెలుసుకుని సినిమా చూస్తే పర్వాలేదు కానీ లేకపోతే గందరగోళంగానే అనిపిస్తుంది. అయితే చెప్పాల్సిన అసలు కథంతా సెకండ్ పార్ట్ కి దాచేసుకుని ఈ ఫస్ట్ పార్ట్ లో కేవలం పాత్రలు, వారి ఉద్దేశ్యాల పరిచయం అన్నట్టుగా చూపించి ఆపేసారు. నాజర్ పాత్ర ఏవిటో కనీసం అర్థం కాకుండా వదిలేసారు. అది సెకండ్ పార్ట్ ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాకులో తెలుసుకోవాలేమో. సినిమా అంతా చూసాక కూడా ఒక ప్రధాన పాత్రది డబల్ యాక్షన్ అని ఎంతమందికి అర్థమయ్యిందో డౌటే. పైగా ముగింపు కూడా అత్యంత పేలవంగా ఉంది. "బాహుబలిని కట్టప్ప ఎందుకు చంపాడు?" లాంటి ప్రశ్న లేకుండా ముగియడం ఈ చిత్రానికి ప్రధానమైన మైనస్. అది సెకండ్ పార్ట్ పై ఆసక్తి పెంచడానికి అవరోధంలా ఉంది.

క్రీం బిస్కెట్ ని రెండు రకాలుగా విడగొట్టొచ్చు. రెండుగా విడగొట్టడం, మధ్యలోకి తుంపడం. 

పిల్లలందరూ చేసే పని రెండుగా విడగొట్టడం. అలా విడగొట్టినప్పుడు ఒకదానికి క్రీము మొత్తం అంటుకుని రెండో దానికి ఏమీ అంటకుండా మిగిలిపోతుంది. అలా క్రీము అంటని బిస్కెట్ ముక్కలాగ మిగిలిపోయింది ఈ పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ ఫస్ట్ పార్టు. 

అలా కాకుండా మధ్యకి తుంపి ఉంటే రెండు భాగాల్లోనూ క్రీముండేది..బాహుబలి మాదిరిగా! 

కనీసం పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ రెండో భాగంలోనైనా మిస్సైన క్రీముంటుందని ఆశిద్దాం.

త‌మిళ‌నాట అత్యంత పాఠ‌కాద‌ర‌ణ పొందిన న‌వ‌ల ‘పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్‌’. క‌ల్కి కృష్ణమూర్తి ర‌చించిన ఈ న‌వ‌ల ఆధారంగా సినిమా తీయాల‌ని ద‌శాబ్దాలుగా ప్రయ‌త్నాలు జ‌రుగుతున్నాయి. ఘ‌న‌మైన చ‌రిత్ర‌, శ‌క్తిమంత‌మైన పాత్రల‌తో కూడిన ఈ న‌వ‌ల‌ని రెండు భాగాలుగా తెర‌కెక్కించ‌డం ఓ సాహసమే. ఎట్టకేల‌కు మ‌ణిర‌త్నం ఆ అసాధ్యాన్ని సుసాధ్యం చేస్తూ రంగంలోకి దిగారు. గొప్ప న‌టుల్ని, సాంకేతిక నిపుణుల్ని ఒకే తాటిపైకి తీసుకొచ్చి ప‌ట్టాలెక్కించారు. దీంతో క్లాప్ కొట్టిన రోజు నుంచే ఈ సినిమాపై భారీ అంచ‌నాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. పాన్ ఇండియా ట్రెండ్ న‌డుస్తోన్న వేళ.. అత్యాధునిక సాంకేతిక‌త‌తో ఈ చిత్రం రెండు భాగాలుగా తెర‌కెక్కింది. ‘పీఎస్‌-1’ పేరుతో శుక్రవారం ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకొచ్చిన తొలి భాగం (ponniyin selvan review) ఎలా ఉందంటే..

క‌థేంటంటే: చోళ చ‌క్రవ‌ర్తి సుంద‌ర చోళుడు (ప్రకాశ్‌రాజ్‌) చివ‌రి రోజుల్లోని క‌థ ఇది. ఆయ‌నకు ఇద్దరు కుమారులు ఆదిత్య కరికాలన్ (విక్రమ్‌), అరుణ్‌మొళి వ‌ర్మన్ అలియాస్ పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ (జ‌యం ర‌వి), ఒక కుమార్తె కుంద‌వై (త్రిష‌). ఇద్దరు కుమారులూ కంచి, శ్రీలంకలో యువ‌రాజులుగా కొన‌సాగుతుంటారు. కుంద‌వై తండ్రి చెంత‌నే ఉంటుంది. త‌న‌తో క‌లసి యుద్ధంలో పాల్గొన్న వందియ‌దేవ‌న్ (కార్తి)ను తంజావూరులో ఉన్న త‌న తండ్రి, చెల్లెలు ద‌గ్గరికి  ఓ లేఖ ఇచ్చి పంపుతాడు ఆదిత్య కరికాలన్‌. అలాగే తన తండ్రి సామ్రాజ్యంలో ఏదో జ‌రుగుతోంద‌ని, అదేంటో తెలుసుకొని ర‌మ్మని కూడా చెబుతాడు‌. అలా ఆ దేశానికి వెళ్లిన వందియ‌దేవ‌న్.. ఆర్థిక మంత్రి పెద్ద పళవేట్టురాయర్‌ (శ‌ర‌త్‌ కుమార్‌), ఇత‌ర సామంతులు  క‌లసి ప‌న్నిన ఓ కుట్రని గ్రహిస్తాడు.

సుంద‌ర చోళుడిని త‌ప్పించి మ‌ధురాంత‌కుడి (రెహమాన్‌)ని చ‌క్రవ‌ర్తిని చేయాల‌నేది పళవేట్టురాయర్‌ కుట్ర. ఆ విష‌యం తెలుసుకున్న కుందవై... పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్‌ను తంజావూరు ర‌మ్మని వందియ‌దేవ‌న్‌తో కబురు పంపిస్తుంది. ఇంత‌లో పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్‌ను ఖైదు చేసి తీసుకుర‌మ్మని పళవేట్టురాయర్‌ లంక‌కి త‌న మ‌నుషుల్ని పంపుతాడు. ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఏం జ‌రిగింది? పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్‌, వందియ‌దేవ‌న్ క‌లిసి పళవేట్టురాయర్‌ పంపిన సైన్యాన్ని ఎదుర్కొనే క్రమంలో ఎలాంటి సంఘ‌ట‌న‌లు చోటు చేసుకున్నాయి? ఈ క‌థ‌లో నందిని (ఐశ్వర్యా రాయ్‌) ఎవ‌రు? ఆమెకు, పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్‌కీ, ఆదిత్య క‌రికాల‌న్‌కీ ఉన్న సంబంధ‌మేమిటనేది తెర‌పైనే చూడాలి.

ఎలా ఉందంటే: మ‌ణిర‌త్నం శైలి క‌థ‌నంతో కూడిన సినిమా ఇది. రాజ్యం, కుట్రలు కుతంత్రాలు,  సాహ‌సాలతో చ‌రిత్రని ఉన్నదున్నట్టుగా తెర‌పై ఆవిష్కరించే ప్రయ‌త్నం చేశారు. ఇలాంటి కథ అనగానే మ‌న‌కు బాహుబ‌లి సినిమానే గుర్తుకొస్తుంది. అయితే ఆ త‌ర‌హాలో హీరోయిజం, ఫాంట‌సీ, డ్రామా అంశాల జోలికి వెళ్లకుండా త‌న మార్క్ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లేతో, ఓ స్థాయి డ్రామాతో చోళుల పాల‌న‌లో ఓ శ‌కాన్ని ఆవిష్కరించే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు మణిరత్నం. రెండు భాగాలుగా తీసిన ఈ సినిమాకి పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్‌ని అడుగ‌డుగునా కాపాడే ఓ స్త్రీ పాత్ర కీల‌కం. ఆమె పాత్రనే సెకండ్‌ పార్ట్‌(పీఎస్‌-2) కీల‌కంగా మార్చారు. బాహుబ‌లిని క‌ట్టప్ప ఎందుకు చంపాడ‌నే ప్రశ్నలాగా, ఆమె పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్‌ని ఎందుకు కాపాడుతోంది? ఇంత‌కీ ఆమె ఎవ‌ర‌నేది కీల‌కం. తొలి భాగంలో వందియ దేవ‌న్ పాత్రకే ఎక్కువ‌గా ప్రాధాన్యం ద‌క్కింది. దాదాపుగా అత‌నే హీరోలా క‌నిపిస్తాడు.

రాజ్యాలు తిరుగుతూ, సాహ‌సాలు చేస్తూ, మ‌ధ్యలో తార‌స‌ప‌డే మ‌హిళ‌ల‌తో స‌ర‌సాలు సాగిస్తూ సాగించే వందియ‌దేవ‌న్ ప్రయాణం  వినోదాన్ని పంచుతుంది. ఆదిత్య క‌రికాల‌న్, నందిని మ‌ధ్య బంధం, సంఘ‌ర్షణ కూడా కీల‌కం. క‌థ‌, క‌థ‌నాలు ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తించినా అక్కడ‌క్కడా సాగ‌దీత‌గా అనిపిస్తుంది. ఇద్దరు యువ‌రాజులతోపాటు, యుద్ధ వీరుల్లాంటి వందియ‌దేవ‌న్‌, పళవేట్టురాజు పాత్రలు ఉన్నప్పుడు వాటిని మ‌రింత శ‌క్తిమంతంగా తీర్చిదిద్ది హీరోయిజాన్ని, డ్రామాని పండించే ఆస్కారం ఉంది. కానీ, ద‌ర్శకుడు ఆ దిశ‌గా దృష్టి సారించ‌లేదు. యుద్ధ స‌న్నివేశాలు కూడా సాదాసీదాగా అనిపిస్తాయి. స‌ముద్రంలో సాగే ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాలు మాత్రం కాస్త ప‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తాయి. బోలెడంత సాంకేతిక‌త అందుబాటులోకి వ‌చ్చినా  స‌న్నివేశాల్లో కొత్తద‌నం చూపించ‌లేక‌పోయారు మ‌ణిర‌త్నం. పుస్తకాన్ని తెర‌పై ఆవిష్కరించే ప్రయ‌త్నం చేసిన‌ట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది త‌ప్ప‌.. పెద్దగా అనుభూతిని పంచ‌లేక‌పోయారు.

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: విక్రమ్ పోషించిన ఆదిత్య క‌రికాల‌న్ పాత్రతోనే క‌థ మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. ఆరంభ స‌న్నివేశాల్లో ఆయ‌న అభిన‌యం ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. వీరోచితాన్ని చూపిస్తూనే, ప్రేమ‌లో ఓడిపోయిన యువ‌రాజుగా చ‌క్కటి భావోద్వేగాల్ని పండించారు. (ponniyin selvan review) పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్‌గా జ‌యం ర‌వి క‌నిపిస్తారు. ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనే ఆ పాత్రకి ప్రాధాన్యం ద‌క్కింది. ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాల్లో ఆయ‌న పోరాటాలు ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటాయి. వందియ‌దేవ‌న్ పాత్రలో కార్తి చేసిన హంగామా సినిమాకే హైలైట్‌. నంబి పాత్రని పోషించిన జ‌య‌రామ్‌తో క‌లిసి హాస్యం కూడా పండించారు. ఐశ్వర్యారాయ్‌, త్రిష‌ల‌తో క‌లిసి చేసే హంగామా ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. తొలి భాగం వ‌ర‌కు వందియ‌దేవ‌న్ పాత్రే హీరో. ఇక అందంతో క‌ట్టిప‌డేశారు ఐశ్వర్యారాయ్‌, త్రిష‌. ఐశ్వర్యల‌క్ష్మి, శోభిత చిన్న పాత్రల్లో సంద‌డి చేశారు.

ప్రకాశ్‌రాజ్‌, శ‌ర‌త్‌కుమార్‌, పార్తిబన్, విక్రమ్ ప్రభు త‌దిత‌రుల పాత్రలకి పెద్దగా ప్రాధాన్యం లేదు. ఉన్నంత‌లో ప‌రిధి మేర‌కు న‌టించారు. సాంకేతిక విభాగాల్లో ర‌వివ‌ర్మన్ కెమెరా ప‌నిత‌నం ఆక‌ట్టుకుంది. ఎ.ఆర్‌.రెహమాన్ సంగీతం ఒక స్థాయిలో ప్రభావం చూపించింద‌ంతే. పాట‌ల చిత్రీక‌ర‌ణ మెప్పిస్తుంది. కాస్త అవ‌కాశం దొరికినా విజువ‌ల్‌గా ఆక‌ట్టుకునే ప్రయ‌త్నం జ‌రుగుతున్న రోజులివి. చరిత్రాత్మకమైన క‌థ చేతిలో ఉన్నా.. తెర‌పై ఎంతైనా చూపించే అవ‌కాశం ఉన్నా.. విజువ‌ల్స్ ప‌రంగా పెద్దగా ప్రభావం చూపించ‌లేక‌పోయిందీ బృందం. ద‌ర్శకుడు మ‌ణిర‌త్నం క‌థ‌నం ప‌రంగా ఒక‌ట్రెండు సంఘ‌ర్షణాత్మక స‌న్నివేశాల్లో మెప్పిస్తారంతే. బోలెడ‌న్ని పాత్రలు, వాటి పేర్లు, కుట్రలు తెర‌పై చూస్తున్నప్పుడు కాస్త గంద‌ర‌గోళంగా అనిపిస్తాయి. నిజానికి ఒక్కొక్క పాత్రతో ఒక్కో సినిమా చేసేంత బ‌లమైన పాత్రలు ఇవి. వీట‌న్నింటికీ న్యాయం జ‌ర‌గ‌లేదేమో అనిపిస్తుంది.

After nearly a seven-decade-long wait, the novel Ponniyin Selvan written by Kalki Krishnamurthy has been made into a feature film by none other than the master filmmaker Mani Ratnam. He has brought a huge star cast together to make this period film. Produced jointly by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies the film is split into two parts. The much anticipated mega-budget film’s part 1 has hit the screens today. Let’s see if it has lived up to the expectations or not.

The king of the Chola dynasty places the responsibility of ruling the kingdom on his brother Sundara Choludu (Prakash Raj) due to his ill health. After a while, Sundara Choludu transfers it to his son Aditya Karikaaludu (Vikram). Madhuranthakudu (Rehman) who is the actual heir and son of the Chola dynasty’s late king gets disappointed with this decision. He seeks the help of another king Pallavaraaya (Sarathkumar) and they plan a secret meeting in Kadambur to discuss the future plan of action.

On the other hand, Aditya Karikaaludu gets suspicious that some conspiracy is going on inside the kingdom and orders his army commander Vallavarayan Vanthiyadevudu (Karthi) to find out the actual truth. Did Vallavarayan complete his job? What is the importance of Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai) in this story? How did Ponniyin Selvan Arunmozhi((Jayam Ravi), brother of Aditya and the next king of the Chola kingdom stop this connivance? Watch the film to know all the answers.

Plus Points:

This PAN Indian project has got many characters but in the first part, Karthi gets the meaty role. He is the entertaining factor in this seriously driven period drama. His flirting scenes with women evoke decent laughs. The actor has given it all for the film and amuses the audience whenever he appears on the screen.

After Karthi, it is Jayam Ravi and Aishwarya Rai who get the key roles and more screen time. Aishwarya Rai’s character is very significant to the story and she aced it to perfection. Jayam Ravi who played the titular role is seen only in the second half but does well. His character will have more prominence in the sequel.

Trisha and Vikram are seen very briefly but their screen presence leaves a mark and raises the impact. Trisha looks beautiful and so does Aishwarya Rai. The drama at key places in both the halves is interesting and creates a few engaging moments. The fight sequence between Karthi and Jayam Ravi and the other action block in the second half is composed well and holds our attention.

Minus Points:

Though the film’s story is interesting, it is filled with more drama and this becomes way too much for a common viewer to grasp what’s going on. The first part itself has so much content that it will take up two parts in itself to showcase. The screenplay at times becomes confusing and convoluted.

One more major drawback is the snail-paced narrative, which tests the patience of the audience. When compared to the dull and slow first half, the second half is quite better. The film has many boring moments bogging down the impact as the director stuck to a flat screenplay without many high moments.

The film needs some serious trimming as the scenes are way too lengthy. The climax fight sequence is one such important moment in the movie but it is heavily dragged for no reason and it lacks clarity too. The cliffhanger moment actually comes with a twist but due to the bad climax, one cannot connect to it.

Technical Aspects:

PS -1 is said to be produced on a large scale and the production values are remarkable. The production design by Thota Tharrani adds more value to this larger-than-life saga. The makers opted for more realistic locations and they made sure the frames look rich. Also, they are easy on the eye.

The costume work done by Eka Lakhani is beguiling and the female leads Aishwarya Rai and Trisha look drop dead gorgeous and highly captivating. Music by Academy award-winning AR Rahman is pleasant and in a few instances, he gave some very high-quality background score to elevate the proceedings. The camerawork by Ravi Varman is neat and he has shown the Cholas period very grandly through his lens. The editing of the film as said earlier is below par making the film a tiring watch.

Mani Ratnam is one of the great Indian directors who is known for his majestic movies. But all the sheer technical brilliance of PS-1 is let down by his middling narration. His intention and dream to bring this great story are visible but he should have been more cautious with his storytelling. The screenplay is co-written by Mani Ratnam and Elango Kumaravel but they didn’t succeed in coming up with an engaging and attention grabbing film.

On the whole, Ponniyin Selvan part: 1 has a good storyline but it is dull and does not have the needed high moments. The lead cast’s performance, sterling production values, and first-rate visuals are brought down by Mani Ratnam’s underwhelming presentation. The first half in particular is complicated with too many characters getting introduced. The Tamil audience will connect to the story more but the Telugu folks can give this film a shot if you love watching period dramas with a huge star cast. Just have your expectations in check.

చోళ రాజు సుంద‌ర చోళుడికి (ప్ర‌కాష్‌రాజ్‌)ఇద్ద‌రు కుమారులు, ఓ కుమార్తె ఉంటారు. సుందర చోళుడు వయసు మీరడంతో తన తర్వాత చోళ సామ్రాజ్యానికి చ‌క్ర‌వ‌ర్తిగా పెద్ద కుమారుడు క‌రికాళ చోళుడిని (విక్ర‌మ్‌) ప్ర‌క‌టించాల‌నే ఆలోచ‌న‌లో సుంద‌ర చోళుడు ఉంటాడు. సుంద‌ర చోళుడి స్నేహితుడు పెద‌ప‌ళువెట్టియార్ (శ‌ర‌త్ కుమార్‌) మాత్రం త‌న మేన‌ల్లుడు మ‌ధురాంత‌కుడిని రాజును చేయాల‌ని సామంత‌రాజుల‌తో క‌లిసి ర‌హ‌స్య ఒప్పందాలు చేస్తుంటాడు.

పొన్నియ‌న్ సెల్వ‌న్ చోళ సామ్రాజ్యం చుట్టూ సాగే ఓ క‌ల్పిత క‌థ‌. చోళ సామ్రాజ్యాన్ని హస్తగతం చేసుకోవడానికి సామంతులు పన్నిన కుట్రలు, అతి పరాక్రమ వంతులైన చోళ రాజకుమారులకు ఎదురైన పరిణామాలతో విజువల్ వండర్ గా మణిరత్నం ఈ సినిమాను తెరకెక్కించారు. దాదాపు ఐదు భాగాలతో కూడిన ఈ చారిత్రక నవలను వెండితెర‌పై ఆవిష్క‌రించ‌డం అంటే పెద్ద సాహ‌స‌మ‌నే చెప్పాలి. కానీ మణిరత్నం మాత్రం ఈ సాహసాన్ని ధైర్యంగా చేశారు.

కథగా చెప్పుకుంటే ఇందులో కొత్తదనం ఏమీలేదు. రాజ్యధికారం కోసం ఆధిపత్య పోరు, కుట్రలు కుతంత్రాలు, వెన్నుపోట్లతో చాలా సినిమాలొచ్చాయి. బాహుబలి కూడా ఇదే ఛాయలతో సాగుతుంది. చోళ రాజ్యంలో అల్ల‌క‌ల్లోలం సృష్టించి సామ్రాజ్యాన్ని హ‌స్త‌గ‌తం చేసుకోవ‌డానికి శ‌త్రువులు ప్ర‌య‌త్నాలు చేయ‌డం, వారి ప‌న్నాగాల్ని ఎదురించి చోళ యువ‌రాజులు క‌రికాళ‌చోలుడు, పొన్నియ‌న్ సెల్వ‌న్ సాగించే చుట్టూ ఈ సినిమా సాగుతుంది.

కథ రక్తి కట్టాలంటే ఎమోషన్ పండటం ముఖ్యం. అది పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ లో మిస్సయింది. క్యారెక్టర్స్ ఎక్కువగానే ఉన్నా వాటి మధ్య సరైన బాండింగ్ కనిపించదు. చోళ సామ్రాజ్యాన్ని పతనాన్ని కోరడానికి నందిని వేసే ఎత్తుల్లో ఆసక్తి లోపించింది. నందిని ప్రేమలో విఫలమై రాక్షసుడిగా మారిపోయానంటూ కరికాళుడి చెప్పే కథ మొత్తం సంభాషణల్లోనే నడవటం ఆకట్టుకోదు. పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ కథను డీటెయిలింగ్‌గా చెప్ప‌డానికే మ‌ణిర‌త్నం ప్ర‌య‌త్నించారు. ఈ సినిమాను రెండు భాగాలుగా తెరకెక్కిస్తున్నట్లుగా ముందుగానే డిసైడ్ కావడంతో ఫస్ట్ పార్ట్ మొత్తం పాత్రల పరిచయానికే ఉపయోగించుకున్నట్లుగా ఉంది. చాలా నెమ్మ‌దిగా సాగుతుంది.

ఫ‌స్ట్ హాఫ్ మొత్తం క‌రికాళుడు అప్ప‌గించిన బాధ్య‌త‌ను నేర‌వేర్చ‌డానికి వ‌ల్ల‌వ‌రాయుడు చేసే సాహ‌సాల‌తో సాగుతుంది. సీరియ‌స్ నెస్ లేకుండా సిల్లీగా ఆ సీన్స్ సాగుతాయి. సెకండాఫ్ పొన్నియ‌న్ సెల్వ‌న్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ గురించే చూపించారు. లెక్క‌కుమించి క్యారెక్ట‌ర్స్ ఉండ‌టంతో వాటికి త‌మిళ పేర్లు పెట్ట‌డంతో తెలుగు ప్రేక్ష‌కులు తిక‌మ‌క‌ప‌డే అవ‌కాశం ఎక్కువ‌గా ఉంది. పాట‌లు క‌థ‌కు అడ్డంకిగా నిలిచాయి. వాటిలో సాహిత్యం, పిక్చరైజేషన్ తమిళ సంస్కృతికి దగ్గరగా ఉన్నాయి.

నందినిగా ఐశ్వ‌ర్యారాయ్ విల‌నిజం…

విఫల ప్రేమను మర్చిపోలేక సంఘర్షణను ఎదుర్కొనే రాక్షసుడి లాంటి రాజు పాత్రలో విక్ర‌మ్ క‌నిపించాడు. అతడి పాత్రను పరిచయం చేసిన తీరు బాగున్నా ఆ ఇంటెన్స్ మొత్తం సినిమాలో కొనసాగించలేకపోయాడు. స్క్రీన్ స్పేస్ తక్కువగానే లభించింది. నందినిగా పాజిటివ్ షేడ్స్ తో క‌నిపించే నెగెటివ్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌లో ఐశ్వ‌ర్యారాయ్ ఆందం, అభిన‌యంతో ఆక‌ట్టుకున్న‌ది. చివ‌ర‌లో ఐశ్వర్య డ్యూయ‌ల్ రోల్ అంటూ చిన్న ట్విస్ట్ ఇచ్చాడు.

కామెడీతో పాటు హీరోయిజాన్ని పండించే క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌లో కార్తి క‌నిపించాడు. సినిమాలో ఎక్కువగా కార్తి పాత్రనే కనిపిస్తుంది. పొన్నియ‌న్ సెల్వ‌న్‌గా జ‌యంర‌వి సెకండాఫ్ మొత్తం కనిపిస్తాడు. పూర్తిగా యాక్ష‌న్ ప్ర‌ధానంగానే అతడి క్యారెక్టర్ ను తీర్చిదిద్దారు. ఈ పాత్ర కోసం తెలుగులో జయం రవి సొంతంగా డబ్బింగ్ చెప్పాడు. కుందవిగా త్రిష అందంగా కనిపించింది. ఐశ్వర్యారాయ్, త్రిష మధ్య వచ్చే రెండు సీన్స్ బాగున్నాయి. శోభిత దూళిపాళ్ల‌, ఐశ్వ‌ర్యల‌క్ష్మిల‌ను అందంగా చూపించారు మణిరత్నం.

బ్యాక్‌గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ ప్ల‌స్‌…

ఏ.ఆర్ రెహ‌మాన్ బ్యాక్‌గ్రౌండ్ మ్యూజిక్ బాగుంది. సెట్స్ కంటే ఎక్కువ‌గా రియ‌లిస్టిక్ లోకేష‌న్స్‌పైనే ఆధార‌ప‌డుతూ సినిమాను తెర‌కెక్కించ‌డం ఆక‌ట్టు్కుంటుంది. ర‌వివ‌ర్మ‌న్ విజువ‌ల్స్ సినిమాకు హైలైట్‌గా నిలిచాయి.

త‌మిళ్ నేటివిటీ ఎక్కువే…

పొన్నియ‌న్ సెల్వ‌న్ సినిమా విజువ‌ల్ వండ‌ర్‌గా కొత్త సినిమాటిక్ ఎక్స్‌పీరియ‌న్స్‌ను అందిస్తుంది. కానీ త‌మిళ్ నేటివిటీ ఎక్కువ‌గా ఉండ‌టం, క‌థ‌, క‌థ‌నాలు నెమ్మ‌దిగా సాగ‌డంతో ఈ సినిమాకు పెద్ద మైన‌స్‌గా మారింది. తెలుగు ఆడియోన్స్‌ను ఈ సినిమా మెప్పించ‌డం కొంత‌వ‌ర‌కు క‌ష్ట‌మే. బాహుబలికి పోటీ అంటూ ప్రచారం జరిగింది. కానీ ఆ సినిమా స్థాయిలో విజయాన్ని అందుకోవడం సందేహమే.

Shrinking a complex five-volume novel into a two-part movie is mean feat. It takes gumption. A whole lot of it. If any director has that attribute in the requisite measure, it is Mani Ratnam. Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1 , a period epic that is vast in scale and varied in visual scope, is proof.

The sprawling, spectacularly mounted film is an ambitious, near-flawless adaptation of a much-loved literary work that demonstrates exactly why it has been a movie project so daunting that the likes of M.G. Ramachandran and Kamalahasan could only make abortive attempts at putting it together.

Needless to say, the tale makes huge technical and artistic demands on Ratnam and his cast and crew. They prove equal to the onerous task of attaining the magnitude, the pacing and the stylistic flourishes that the story demands and available image-making technology allows.

That certainly does not mean that the veteran director surrenders himself lock, stock and barrel to the lure and power of computer-generated imagery. Ratnam is too good a craftsman and storyteller to over-rely on the razzle-dazzle of the kind of unbridled visual effects that have driven recent Indian blockbusters such as Baahubali, RRR and KGF.

Ratnam does not resort to sensory or visceral overdrive, drawing strength instead from the smart script written by him, B. Jeyamohan and Elango Kumaravel and from a cast of actors at the top of their game. PS-1 is a treat for the eyes as much as it is for the mind.

He abjures VFX excesses and grounds the historical fiction in a realistic zone to achieve the goal of capturing the massive sweep of Kalki Krishnamurthy's cult 1955 novel that traces the era of the Cholas.

It has taken six and a half decades for the story to make it to the big screen. The wait has been worth it. The Tamil-language PS-1 has versions dubbed in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam running in theatres nationwide.

In the 167-minute Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1 , some passages seem a tad rushed because the introduction of a panoply of characters and the exposition of historically dense details have to be crunched into a couple of three-hour films.

Editor A. Sreekar Prasad, whose oft-proven skills are tested to the severest, ensures that the story has just enough breathing spaces for it not to keel over into occasional incomprehensibility.

Once the prelude is out of the way and all the major characters have been lined up, PS-1 gets into the swing of things. It presents a phenomenally smooth ride through an exciting series of events - fierce battles, palace intrigue, lost love, vanquished soldiers seeking revenge, brave resistance - that records the high points of Chola history in a manner that is both tangible and texturally immersive.

The most noteworthy aspect of PS-1, besides the consistently impressive performances by a cast led by Vikram and brilliantly propped up by Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi and Trisha, among others, is the production design by Thotta Tharini and the well-considered choice of locations lensed brilliantly by cinematographer Ravi Varman. The story unfolds in spaces that are eye-popping without being fantastical in the way that settings of historical epics of this nature usually tend to be.

PS-1 invokes the spatial attributes of the tenth century to perfection - be they structures made of stone, interiors of forts and palaces or ships and boats out at sea. But at no point do the images look like they have been crafted on the computer. PS-1 is a marvellously tactile film that stays rooted in a specific period without having to create improbable, cardboard cut-out sets suspended somewhere between a puerile understanding of design and a puerile imagination.

Similarly, the film's dramatis personae - the ailing Emperor Sundar Chola (Prakash Raj) and his three offspring, Crown Prince Aditha Karikalan (Vikram), his younger brother Arulmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi, who appears late in the film in the guise of the titular character) and sister Kundhavai (Trisha), and their aides and adversaries within and without the kingdom - are never less than human.

They deal with palpable emotions even as they grapple with challenges of grand proportions. The characters, be they Chola royalty or men of common stock, sound believable even when they are in declamatory mode, moving seamlessly from uncommon wisdom to chatty banter.

With the air of outright make-believe masterfully reined in, PS-1 is a historical saga that draws the audience in without resorting to the conjurer's art. Its magic lies purely in its layered cinematic qualities.

Mischief is afoot in the expanding Chola empire with Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), wife of the scheming finance minister Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar (R. Sharathkumar), having vowed to destroy the kingdom. She holds a personal grudge against her one-time lover Aditha Karikalan.

The conspiracy, of which the finance minister's brother and the Tanjore Fort's in-charge Chinna Pazhuvettaraiyar (Radhakrishnan Parthiban) and a host of royal chieftains are a part, is aimed at overthrowing Sundar Chola and putting his nephew Madurantaka (Rahman) on the throne.

Sensing the grave danger that lies ahead, Aditha Karikalan sends his best friend and trusted aide Vandhiyathevan (Karthi, who steals almost the entire first half of the film thanks to the character's gift of the gab and amorous antics) with a message for Emperor Sundar Chola.

The courageous and cheerful Vandhiyathevan dodges elements in the court of the king as well as of survivors from a defeated Pandiyan army who are out to avenge their slain king Veerapandyan.

While power-hungry or jilted-in-love men to a great deal of the talking, PS-1 is true to the source material in that it accords equal significance to the women in the story. Besides the beauteous and strong-willed Nandini, the tough and clear-headed Chola Princess Kundavai plays an important role as the story progresses.

Kundavai is not only sent by her father to pacify her elder brother Aditha Karikalan, she also instructs Vandhiyethevan to travel to Sinhala kingdom with a message for her brother Arulmozhi. Two other women in the plot - Vaanathi (Sobhita Dhulipala), who dreams of marrying Arulmozhi, and boatwoman Samuthirakumari (Aishwarya Lekshmi) - do not have as much to do in this part of the magnum opus. More is probably in store for them in the sequel.

Action-packed and eventful, the first part of the drama winds up at a point of the story that leaves many questions unresolved and points to what could form the core of Ponniyin Selvan - Part 2, scheduled for release in 2023. The film inevitably packs too much into too little time but it never fails to look and sound - A.R. Rahman's songs and background score constitute the backbone of the sound design - like a meticulously conceived and executed work of cinema.

PS-1 i s both exhilarating and enriching. Another dose would be just perfect.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 review: Mani Ratnam’s largely faithful and brilliant adaptation has no dull moments

The toughest aspect of adapting Ponniyin Selvan into a film is how to condense a magnum opus spanning 2000 pages into a 2.5 hour movie. It’s a tough choice — what to use and what to discard. Here’s where Mani Ratnam wins. He cuts through the faff (honestly, there’s a lot in the text) and takes only things that move the story forward. Covering about two-and-a-half books of the five-part series, Ponniyin Selvan 1 tells the story that takes place in multiple places. With Sundara Cholan’s (played by Prakash Raj) failing health, a coup is staged to prevent prince Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) from becoming the next king. The young prince, who is away from the capital, sends his friend Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan (Karthi), a spy and a messenger from Kanchi, to find the traitors. This is just one piece of the jigsaw, with other plotlines involving Arulmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi) in Sri Lanka and Kundhavai (Trisha) in Pazhayarai. While it’s tough to even write a pithy synopsis of the 5-part novel, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan finds time and space to include the best of the original and add two immersive war sequences.

The war sequences, however, make PS 1 the most commercial film of Mani Ratnam’s career. The obvious purpose of the two sequences is to pander to the increasing thirst of audiences for larger-than-life war moments on screen post-Baahubali. Ratnam, however, refuses to take the easy way out — the battle sequences look real and authentic instead of just being the introduction scenes of the heroes. The filmmaker consciously takes this path despite having a story that can easily be exploited for “fire and water” moments.

Mani Ratnam makes the drama more engrossing than the sword fights. The meeting of Nandini ( Aishwarya Rai ) and Kundhavai (Trisha) is sparkling, Aditha Karikalan’s monologue about Nandini is memorable, and Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan’s hopeless pick-up lines are more enjoyable than sinking ships and burning forts. Take the scene where Pazhuvettaraiyar brothers (Sarathkumar and Parthiban) meet Sundara Cholan. The king knows the two, who have been faithful friends of the kingdom, are plotting against him. How do you show this pain without dialogue? Here’s how: the king is undergoing acupuncture treatment and the doctors are piercing his ‘back’ with needles as he speaks to the traitors. It is an evident symbolism, but subtle and effective. Similarly, we have pretty everyday dialogues sans the usual Mani Ratnam touch. The director has said earlier he was worried about the dialogues as he wanted them to be pure Tamil but not dramatic and archaic. Tamil writer Jeyamohan turned out to be the right man for the job. The lines seldom sound odd to the viewer who doesn’t speak that old Tamil anymore.

Another thing that is majorly in favour of the film is the effective performances. Like in the novel, Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan steals the show effortlessly. Karthi lives up to all the expectations — he is effortlessly charming as a glib flirt and at the same time, you see him as a brave warrior. I don’t know if anyone other than Mani Ratnam could have done justice to all the hype Kalki created about Nandini Devi. Yes, it is played by Aishwarya Rai, but her scenes are a study in perfectly presenting a character — the seductive music and soft focus are as sensuous as the actor herself. Mani Ratnam has indeed created Kalki’s ‘Maya Mohini’ on screen.

On the other hand, Jayam Ravi and Trisha surprise you as Ponniyin Selvan and Kundhavai, respectively. What were perceived as odd choices turn out to be the perfect ones. Ravi radiates the affable energy of a level-headed prince, who is in control of things. Personally, I felt the most heroic moments went to Trisha as Kundhavai, and not for a second she fails to live upto them.

Another hero of the film has stood behind the camera. It would be a cliche to say ‘every frame of cinematographer Ravi Varman looks like a painting’, but what can you do when it is the truth? From Nandini relaxing in her palace before meeting Vanthiyathevan to the extreme long shot of Poongkuzhali’s boat in the vast ocean to the entry of Aditha Karikalan on his horse, many such frames in PS1 are worthy enough to be hung as paintings. It’s one thing to make shots scream ‘grand’ and another to shoot the innate grandness of things. Ravi Varman’s work obviously belongs to the second category.

The difference between Mani Ratnam’s brand of commercial films and the rest becomes evident with Ponniyin Selvan. He doesn’t make demi-gods out of his heroes, they are just kings. Also, the filmmaker respects the audience. When Kundhavai sends Vanthiyathevan to Sri Lanka, the film takes a huge leap. The next time when we see Karthi, he is in a boat in the ocean. He trusts audience intelligence to fill in the gaps and that’s why PS 1 is rewarding. He also understands that Ponniyin Selvan is itself a mainstream page-turner that panders to the audience. Hence, he neither dumbs it down nor intellectualizes it. Instead, he retains the flavour of the widely-enjoyed book in this thoroughly enjoyable film.

As Delhi continue to swelter under heatwave conditions, Mungeshpur in Northwest Delhi recorded its highest-ever temperature at 52.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. What’s it about?

A messenger/spy Vanthiyadevudu (Karthi) takes a long journey to deliver the message of Aditya Karikaludu (Vikram) to his sister Kundavi (Trisha), who lives in a faraway land. Before heading to Kundavi’s place, he spies on what’s happening at Pallavattu and his wife Nandini’s (Aishwarya Rai) palace. He meets Nandini who assigns him another job. 

When he meets Kundavi, she requests him to head to Sri Lanka and bring her younger brother Arun Mozhi aka Ponniyan Selvan (Jayam Ravi) to Tanjavur. What is the connection between Aditya and Nandini? Who is trying to kill Ponniyan Selvan? What happens when Vanthiyadevudu meets Ponniyan Selvan?

Auteur Mani Ratnam’s latest film ‘PS-1’ is the first part of the two-part film based on Kalki’s ‘Ponniyan Selvan’, an epic Tamil novel. Many Tamil filmmakers and actors have tried to adapt the novel into film but could not do so due to budget and length constraints. Mani Ratnam, too, had planned to make it many years ago. Seeing the success of Rajamouli’s ‘Baahuabali nationwide and the way two parts were received by the audiences, Mani Ratnam gathered courage and drew inspiration from it to turn the story into two films. Thus, the first part aka PS-1 is here.

Since I have not read the Tamil novel, I critique the film as is. It took a lot of time for me to comprehend the characters and the plot. To understand their conspiracies, we need to remember the characters and their names. That is a big task in this film. Added to that, Karthi takes a long journey. In the film’s first half, we see a song or dance routine every time he comes. The songs and tunes are not mellifluous or catchy either. 

Even the so-called “Chola Chola” song filmed on Vikram looks odd in the film. 

The film has a dense plot. The twists and turns are interesting. But to comprehend them is not an easy job. The first half of the film entirely belongs to Karthi. He also does comedy and flirts with women. Neither his comedic act nor his romantic side is attractive. 

What I liked was the visual palette. Mani Ratnam is the master of visuals. The film is a visual treat thanks to the fantastic production design by Thota Tharani. Ravi Varman’s camerawork is splendid as well. The trio has provided a visual delight. 

But the film scores less on the gripping narrative and music. When we watch films and web series like “Baahubali” and “Game of Thrones”, we get to see many narrative high moments or whistle-worthy sequences. Despite belonging to the same genre, “PS-1” fails to provide such moments. 

Moving at a leisurely pace, the film hardly engages. Plus, except for Karthi, none of the characters have a defined arc. Perhaps, they may get their due in the second part. 

Compared to the first half, I liked the handling of the second half. And the final twist related to Aishwarya Rai is intriguing as well.

As far as performances are concerned, all the actors have done justice to their roles. Karthi gets more space than others. But it is Aishwarya Rai who steals the show. She appears in two different roles. She gives a terrific performance. Trisha is wonderful. They create compelling moments whenever they appear on the screen. Jayaram’s character lacks impact in the Telugu version.

Vikram repeats his ‘Raavan’ act. Jayam Ravi in his brief role as Ponniyan Selvan leaves an impression. 

The Telugu dubbing is okay. Tanikella Bharani’s dialogue writing is apt.

Bottom-line: ‘PS-1’, Mani Ratnam’s latest spectacle, is a delight to look at but hard to enjoy the proceedings. The film has stunning production design and visuals, but the narrative is dull.

'పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్' (Ponniyin Selvan) ను తమిళ ప్రేక్షకులు సినిమాగా చూడటం లేదు. యాభై ఏళ్ళ కలగా పేర్కొంటున్నారు. దర్శకుడు మణిరత్నం మాత్రమే కాదు, చోళ సామ్రాజ్య వైభవం తెరపైకి వస్తే చూసి తరించాలని కోరుకున్న కోలీవుడ్ ప్రముఖులు, ప్రేక్షకులు ఎంతో మంది ఉన్నారు. తమిళ చిత్ర పరిశ్రమ నుంచి  'బాహుబలి', 'కెజియఫ్', 'ఆర్ఆర్ఆర్' స్థాయిలో వస్తున్న చిత్రమని చెబుతున్నారు. మరి, ఈ సినిమా (PS1 Review) ఎలా ఉంది?

కథ (Ponniyin Selvan Story) : చోళ సామ్రాజ్యాధినేతగా, తన తర్వాత వారసుడిగా  పెద్ద కుమారుడు ఆదిత్య కరికాలుడు (విక్రమ్)ను యువరాజుగా సుందర చోళుడు (ప్రకాష్ రాజ్) ప్రకటిస్తాడు. పట్టం కడతాడు. ఆ నిర్ణయానికి వ్యతిరేకంగా సామంత రాజులు అందరినీ పళు వెట్టరాయర్ (శరత్ కుమార్) ఏకం చేస్తాడు. సుందర చోళుడు అన్నయ్య కుమారుడు మధురాంతకుడు (రహమాన్) ను రాజును చేయాలని సంకల్పిస్తాడు. ఏదో జరుగుతోందని సమాచారం అందుకున్న ఆదిత్య కరికాలుడు... తన మిత్రుడు వల్లవరాయన్ వందియ దేవుడు (కార్తీ) ని పంపిస్తాడు. అతడు ఏం చేశాడు? తమకు వ్యతిరేకంగా కుట్ర జరుగుతుందని తెలిసిన తర్వాత సుందర చోళుడు రెండో కుమారుడు అరుళ్ మౌళి ('జయం' రవి), కుమార్తె కుందైవై (త్రిష) ఏం చేశారు? పళు వెట్టరాయర్ భార్య నందిని దేవి (ఐశ్వర్యా రాయ్ బచ్చన్) ఉన్నంత వరకూ తంజావూరు రానని ఆదిత్య కరికాలుడు ఎందుకు చెబుతున్నాడు? వాళ్ళిద్దరి మధ్య ఏం జరిగింది? చివరకు ఏమైంది? అనేది సినిమా. 

విశ్లేషణ (Ponniyin Selvan Telugu Movie Review) : చారిత్రాత్మక కథలు, ప్రజలకు తెలిసిన గాథలు, పుస్తకాలను తెరకెక్కించడం కత్తిమీద సాము లాంటి వ్యవహారం. కథలో మార్పులు చేస్తే చరిత్రకారులు మండి పడతారు. తెలిసిన కథ కాబట్టి ఏమాత్రం ఆసక్తికరంగా లేకపోయినా ప్రేక్షకులు పెదవి విరుస్తారు. మణిరత్నం మేధస్సుకు ఇవన్నీ తెలియనివి కావు. రామాయణ, మహాభారతాల స్పూర్తితో ఆయన గతంలో సినిమాలు తీశారు. 'పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్' అంటూ చోళ సామ్రాజ్య చరిత్రను తెరకెక్కించే సవాలును స్వీకరించారు. 

రాజ్యాలు, యుద్ధాలు, రాజ కుటుంబంలో కుట్రలు అంటే భారతీయ ప్రేక్షకులకు ముందుగా గుర్తుకు వచ్చేది 'బాహుబలి'. రాజమౌళి అండ్ కో ట్రెండ్, స్టాండర్డ్స్ సెట్ చేశారు. ఆ సినిమా చూసిన కళ్ళతో 'పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్' చూస్తే నచ్చుతుందా? అని ప్రశ్నిస్తే... 'చాలా కష్టం' అని చెప్పాలి. 'బాహుబలి'ని మనసులోంచి తీసేసి చూస్తే? ఈ ప్రశ్నకూ 'కష్టం' అనే చెప్పాలి. 

మణిరత్నం అంటే ఆయన అభిమానులకు కొన్ని అంచనాలు ఉంటాయి. కొంత మంది ప్రేక్షకుల నుంచి 'ఆయన సినిమాల్లో కథనం నెమ్మదిగా ఉంటుంది' అనే విమర్శ కూడా వినిపిస్తూ ఉంటుంది. 'పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్' విషయంలో ఇటువంటి విమర్శలు ఎక్కువ వినిపించవచ్చు. కథలో చాలా విషయం ఉంది. దాన్ని ఎటువంటి క‌న్‌ఫ్యూజ‌న్స్‌ లేకుండా స్క్రీన్ మీదకు తీసుకు రావడంలో మణిరత్నం అండ్ కో ఫెయిల్ అయ్యారు. 

విక్రమ్ యుద్ధం చేస్తుంటే... ఎటువంటి గూస్ బంప్స్ రావు. 'జయం' రవి, కార్తీ యుద్ధ సన్నివేశాలకూ అంతే! యాక్షన్ ఏమాత్రం ఆకట్టుకోదు. 'పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్'లో యుద్ధ సన్నివేశాల కంటే డ్రామా ఎక్కువ ఉంది. డ్రామా కూడా ఆకట్టుకునేలా లేదు. క్యారెక్టర్ పేర్లు అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి సమయం పట్టేలా ఉంటే... వాళ్ళ మధ్య వరసలు అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి మరింత సమయం పడుతుంది. చరిత్ర పుస్తకం ముందు పెట్టి మనల్ని చదువమని చెప్పినట్టు ఉంటుంది తప్ప... సినిమాటిక్ ఎక్స్‌పీరియ‌న్స్‌ ఎక్కడా ఉండదు. ఎమోషన్స్ ఏవీ కనెక్ట్ కావు. రెహమాన్ పాటలు, అక్కడక్కడా నేపథ్య సంగీతంలో మెరుపులు లేకపోతే థియేట‌ర్ల‌లో కూర్చోవ‌డం  కష్టం అయ్యేది. కొన్ని సన్నివేశాల్లో విజువల్స్ బావున్నాయి. వీఎఫ్ఎక్స్ తేలిపోయాయి. 

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారు? : కార్తీతో కంపేర్ చేస్తే... విక్రమ్, 'జయం' రవి పాత్రలు అతిథి పాత్రల తరహాలో ఉంటాయి. సినిమా  ప్రారంభంలో ఓసారి, మ‌ధ్య‌లో అప్పుడ‌ప్పుడూ, మ‌ళ్లీ ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాల్లో విక్ర‌మ్ క‌నిపిస్తారు. జ‌యం ర‌వి క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ ఇంట‌ర్వెల్ త‌ర్వాత ఇంట్ర‌డూస్ అవుతుంది. యుద్ధ స‌న్నివేశాల్లో వాళ్ళిద్ద‌రూ బాగా చేశారు. భావోద్వేగ‌భ‌రిత స‌న్నివేశాల్లో సైతం మెప్పించారు. కార్తీ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌లో కామెడీ షేడ్స్ ఉన్నాయి. అటు వినోదం, ఇటు వీరత్వం... సన్నివేశాలకు అనుగుణంగా ఆయన నటించారు. ప్రకాష్ రాజ్, శరత్ కుమార్, పార్తీబన్, జయరామ్ తదితరులు పాత్రలకు అనుగుణంగా నటించారు. ఆయా పాత్రలకు వాళ్ళు హుందాతనం తీసుకొచ్చారు తప్ప... వాళ్ళకు పెద్దగా నటించే అవకాశం రాలేదు.

కథానాయికలు ఐశ్వర్యా రాయ్ బచ్చన్, త్రిష, శోభితా ధూళిపాళ, ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మి... ప్రతి ఒక్కరికీ మణిరత్నం మర్చిపోలేని క్యారెక్టర్లు ఇచ్చారు. ముఖ్యంగా త్రిషను తెరపై చూపించిన తీరు గురించి ఎంత చెప్పినా తక్కువే. ఆమె కెరీర్‌లో లుక్స్ పరంగా కుందవై క్యారెక్టర్ బెస్ట్ అండ్ టాప్ అని చెప్పాలి. ఐశ్వర్యను సైతం బాగా చూపించారు. కేవలం కళ్ళతో ఆమె హావభావాలు పలికించారు. శోభిత, ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మి కనిపించేది కాసేపే అయినప్పటికీ... క్యారెక్టర్లకు వాళ్లిద్దరూ న్యాయం చేశారు.

ఫైనల్‌గా చెప్పేది ఏంటంటే? : రాజ్య‌కాంక్ష‌లో కుట్రలు, కుతంత్రాలు ఉంటాయి. రాజ్యాధికారం కోసం చేసే యుద్ధంలో వీరత్వం ఉంటుంది. 'పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్'లో కమర్షియల్ సినిమాకు కావాల్సిన హంగులు ఉన్నాయి. కుట్రలు, కుతంత్రాలను, వీరత్వాన్ని వెండితెరపై ఆవిష్కరించగల భారీ తారాగణం, సాంకేతిక బృందం ఉంది. అయితే... తన చేతిలో ఉన్న ప్రతిభను మణిరత్నం మాత్రం సరిగా వాడుకోలేదు. ప్రారంభం నుంచి ముగింపు వరకు ఏదో తీసుకుంటూ వెళ్లారు తప్ప... ప్రేక్షకుల్లో ఆసక్తి కలిగించిన సందర్భాలు తక్కువ. 'పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్' థియేటర్లలో చివరి వరకు కూర్చోవాలంటే చాలా ఓపిక కావాలి. మణిహారంలో ఇదొక మచ్చగా మిగిలే అవ‌కాశాలు ఉన్నాయి. సినిమాలో మణిరత్నం మార్క్ ఎక్కడా కనిపించలేదు. పతాక సన్నివేశాల్లో రెండో భాగంపై ఆసక్తి పెంచేలా ఒక సన్నివేశం చూపించారంతే!

9వ శతాబ్దంలో జరిగిన చోళుల కథగా పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ దర్శకుడు మణిరత్నం తెరకెక్కించారు. దీనికి ప్రముఖ రచయిత కల్కి కృష్ణమూర్తి రాసిన పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ అనే నవల ఆధారం. చోళులు వారి సమకాలీయులైన పల్లవులు, పాండ్యులతో శత్రుత్వం కొనసాగించారు. మొత్తంగా చెప్పాలంటే చోళ రాజుల వీర గాథే పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ మూవీ.   

తమిళ సినిమా ప్రైడ్ గా పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ చిత్రాన్ని ప్రచారం చేశారు. భారీ బడ్జెట్ తో ప్రతిష్టాత్మకంగా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని రూపొందించారు. విక్రమ్, కార్తీ, జయం రవి, త్రిష, ఐశ్వర్య రాయ్, విక్రమ్ ప్రభు, శరత్ కుమార్, ప్రభు, ప్రకాష్ రాజ్, జయరాం ఇలా లెక్కలు మించిన స్టార్ క్యాస్ట్ మూవీలో భాగమయ్యారు. పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ రెండు భాగాలుగా విడుదల చేస్తున్నట్లు ప్రకటించిన విషయం తెలిసిందే. సెప్టెంబర్ 30న వరల్డ్ వైడ్ 5 భాషల్లో విడుదల చేశారు.

పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ చిత్రంపై భారీ హైప్ ఏర్పడింది. దానికి తగ్గట్లే ఓపెనింగ్స్ ఉన్నాయి. యూఎస్ లో ఇది రికార్డు ఓపెనింగ్స్ నమోదు చేస్తుంది. ఇప్పటికే $ 1 మిలియన్ ప్రీమియర్ వసూళ్లకు చేరువైంది. ఫైనల్ రిపోర్ట్ వచ్చే నాటికి ఈ ఫిగర్ $1 నుండి 1.5 మిలియన్ ఉండవచ్చని అంచనా. ఓ తమిళ చిత్రానికి ఇది రికార్డు ఓపెనింగ్ అని చెప్పాలి. 

ఇక పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ తెలుగు వెర్షన్ చిరంజీవి వాయిస్ ఓవర్ తో స్టార్ట్ అవుతుంది. బిగినింగ్ లోనే ఒక పెద్ద వార్ ఎపిసోడ్ తో ప్రేక్షకుల అంచనాలు పెంచేశాడు. యుద్ధ సన్నివేశాలు ప్రేక్షకులను ఒకింత అలరిస్తాయి. 9వ శతాబ్దం నాటి సెటప్, పరిస్థితులు తీర్చిదిద్దిన తీరు బాగుంది.

పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ మూవీ గురించి చెప్పుకోవాల్సిన విషయాల్లో విజువల్స్, మ్యూజిక్, ప్రధాన నటుల పెర్ఫార్మన్స్, స్టోరీ, పాటల చిత్రీకరణ. ఏ ఆర్ రెహమాన్ నేపధ్య సంగీతం సినిమాకు ప్రధాన బలంగా నిలిచింది. మణిరత్నం మార్క్ షాట్స్, విజువల్స్ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. విక్రమ్, కార్తీ, త్రిష, ఐశ్వర్య రాయ్, జయం రవి తో పాటు కీలక రోల్స్ చేసిన నటుల పెర్ఫార్మన్స్ ప్రేక్షకుడికి మంచి అనుభూతి పంచుతుంది.   

ముఖ్యంగా కార్తీ రోల్, ఆయన నటన గురించి చెప్పుకోవాలి. ఉన్నత నిర్మాణ విలువలతో గ్రాండ్ గా తెరకెక్కిన పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ కథాబలం తో నడిచే చిత్రం. స్క్రీన్ ప్లే పర్లేదు అనిపిస్తుంది. ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ డీసెంట్ గా నిరాశపరచకుండా సాగుతుంది. ఉత్కంఠ రేపే యుద్ధ సన్నివేశాలు, హృదయాలు దోచే ఎమోషనల్ కనెక్షన్ అయితే సినిమాలో మిస్. ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ వరకు మణిరత్నం సినిమాను పాత్రలు పరిచయం, ఈ కథ ఏమిటీ? అని చెప్పే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు.   

ఇతర పీరియాడిక్ వార్ మూవీస్ తో పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ ను పోల్చుకోకూడదు. 9వ శతాబ్దం నాటి చోళుల చరిత్రను కల్కి కృష్ణమూర్తి నవల ఆధారంగా చేప్పే ప్రయత్నం జరిగింది. ఒక బలమైన కథ అనేక పాత్రల సమ్మేళనంగా సాగుతుంది. ఒక ప్రాంతానికి చెందిన చరిత్ర, నేటివిటీ కావడం సినిమాకు ఒకింత మైనస్. పాత్రల పేర్లు ప్రేక్షకులకు ఎక్కవు.   

మొత్తంగా పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ దర్శకుడు మణిరత్నం తెరకెక్కించిన పీరియాడిక్ విజువల్ డ్రామా. విజువల్స్, సంగీతం, కథ, ప్రధాన నటుల పెర్ఫార్మన్స్ సినిమాకు ప్రధాన ఆకర్షణ. అయితే పీరియాడిక్ పాన్ ఇండియా మూవీ అనగానే ఉత్కంఠ గొలిపే యుద్ధ సన్నివేశాలు ఊహించుకోవడం సాధారణం. వాటి కంటే దర్శకుడు కథ, ఎమోషన్స పైనే దృష్టి పెట్టాడు. అయితే ఎమోషన్స్ అంతగా కనెక్ట్ కాలేదు.

ప్రీమియర్ టాక్ ప్రకారం పొన్నియిన్ సెల్వన్ డీసెంట్ అటెంప్ట్. ఇక బాక్సాఫీస్ వద్ద ఈ చిత్రం మంచి ఓపెనింగ్స్ దక్కించుకోవడం ఖాయం. తమిళంలో ఈ చిత్రానికి హిట్ టాక్ వచ్చేలా కనిపిస్తుంది. మరి ఇతర భాషల్లో ఎంత వరకు రాణిస్తుందనేది చూడాలి.

Star filmmaker Mani Ratnam had been trying to make the movie Ponniyin Selvan for more than two decades. Finally, he could make it and release it this year. With a huge and popular star cast, Mani Ratnam made the movie in two parts. The movie is based on the book Ponniyin Selvan’ by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The first part of Ponniyin Selvan was released today. Here is the review.

What Is It About?

Adithya Karikaalan (Vikram), Arunkanimozhi aka Ponniyin Selvan (Jayam Ravi), and Kundhuvai (Trisha) are the heir of Emperor Sundara Chola (Prakash Raj) of the Chola kingdom. While the plans are in work to make Adithya Karikalan the king of the kingdom due to Sundara Chola being ill, internal conspiracies, and the ploy from Pandian rebels take the front seat to stop it. Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai), the wife of treasurer Pedda Palivettarayudu (Sarath Kumar) plays a crucial role in internal politics while Kundhuvai is intelligent enough to barricade her. How does Adhithya Karikalan’s right-hand Vallavaraya Vandiyadevudu (Karthi) help the royal siblings and how the politics lead to the unexpected, is all about PS 1.

Performances

Ponniyin Selvan has got many popular stars in it. Vikram appears in one of the very important roles, Adithya Karikaalan. He lives in the role of the Chola prince. He appears in key scenes and he does his part very well.

Karthi occupies most part of PS 1 and he did exceptionally well in the role he was given. Karthi’s character has a bit of playfulness and wit, which he carried throughout the movie. Aishwarya Rai and Trisha look stunning in the royal attires. Their performances and confrontation episodes are good to watch. Aishwarya Rai’s character has layers in itself and she handled it with ease.

Jayam Ravi, Sarath Kumar, Parthiban, Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Vikram Prabhu, Prabhu, and others appear in brief roles and they did fine.

Technicalities

PS 1 has got a great story enough to make one gripping movie. It has interesting twists and political tactics, but most of them appear ordinary due to the flat narrative. The screenplay could have been better.

There are some good visuals but the movie on whole is not a visual wonder. The war sequences are typical and there is no wow factor in that too.

The graphics work could have been better and it could have made It more appealing and grand. The Background music is good. The song Ponge Nadhi is also good, but there is some unsteadiness during the songs.

Flat narration No Highs Visual effects

Ponniyin Selvan is the story of the Chola kingdom that shows the conspiracies and ill-minded politics that happened for the throne, some 1000 years back. The story is very sound and it has the proper conflicts to make it more interesting.

First things first, one should have a basic idea of who’s who in the film. The voice-over, in the beginning, gives a little insight but the names and places having all the Tamil native names make it tough for the unversed to connect the dots. But being a political drama, Ponniyin Selvan should be having an interesting narrative with that much-needed fervor. The director here tells the story, but the mediocre screenplay makes it more than hard to establish the emotional connection between the characters.

With many characters and each one in different places, the story had to revolve around also showing the cunning ploys in respective episodes. The subplots in some of the episodes relating to Arulmozhi in Lanka could have been cut to simple and shorter scenes. Already with the bland narration, the prolonged scenes distance us more from the actual plot.

The twists in the tale could be more intense. Most of them were just shown while the characters speak about it, without the ‘highs’ or elevations that could have made some impact. PS 1 movie many a time reminds us of the Game Of Thrones, which also revolves around many places, kingdoms, and submerged politics. PS 1 has that potential, but the ecstasy one would feel in that series is missing here.

The audience would expect the least that Vallavaraya Vandiyadevudu (Karthi) takes the front seat and most of the story is driven from his vantage point in the first half. Nandhini’s (Aishwarya Rai) multi-faceted character raises curiosity and also hints that there is more mystery to it. Kundhuvai’s (Trisha) character also is powerful with interesting instincts, which again turn ordinary. With so many wonderful actors, PS 1 had a chance to get a proper connection of two or three main characters to the audience, which did not happen due to giving prominence to the base story alone.

Overall, PS 1 has got very strong content and a talented star cast, but the dull narrative and missing emotional connection with the characters do not make it a phenomenal watch. From names to places, history to nativity, PS 1 has fair chance to connect to the Tamil audience than to the Telugu audience. Having seen the films with large scale and grandeur, like RRR and Baahubali, Ponniyin Selvan might look normal to the Telugu audience. The openings of PS 1 are huge across the globe and it has to be seen how the movie advances at the box office.

Bottomline: Powerful Content – Sluggish Narrative

Ponniyin Selvan 1 Movie Review: Mani Ratnam�??s Dream Project Comes True

�??PS 1 (Ponniyin Selvan 1)�??, Mani Ratnam�??s dream project, is a period action film which is currently the talk of the town. The film is based on the popular novel of the Tamil state with the same name. The film deals with the Chola Empire as known to us all. �??Ponniyin Selvan 1�?? has a very huge star cast, was made on a huge budget. Mani Ratnam made the epic story of the Chola Empire into two parts, and the first part, PS 1, is released theatres worldwide in multiple languages. The trailer showcases visual feast and creates interest on the film. Let�??s check out how it fares at box-office.

Vandiyadevudu(Karthi) goes on a mission to the entire Chola Kingdom, as instructed by his friend and king, Aditya Karikaaludu(Vikram). On his trip, Vandiyadevudu finds out about the conspiracy running internally to put an end to Arunmozhi Varma(Jayam Ravi) and the rest of the Chola dynasty. How Vandiyadevudu, with the help of others, fights this and saves Arunmozhi Varma is the rest of the narrative of PS 1. The story continues in the sequel.

Mani Ratnam sets up the very beginning of the film with an intense and realistic war episode. The audience are introduced to the world of the Chola empire with the voice over of Chiranjeevi. This narration is really interesting. The entire first half of the film is really a well-scripted drama where Karthi takes the driving seat. Chiyaan Vikram, in a few but impactful sequences, holds the key in the first half. Mani Ratnam chose to take the same path, even for the second half of the film. The second half of PS 1 is mostly similar to the first half, beginning with a war episode, driving into drama, a bit of action here and there, but the only change is that Jayam Ravi runs the show this time. Overall, PS 1 is a beautifully written and filmed, fascinating drama that is unlike any other war action film.

The main drawback of the film is the narration will be a bit boring and audience needs to be very patient as there were no highs in the film. On a final note, �??PS 1�?? is a fascinating drama narrating an epic historical story. Mani Ratnam brought the best of everything on screen for his dream project. The casting and AR Rahman�??s background score stand as the main highlights of the film. PS 1 is more about drama and less about action.

Performances

Vikram as Aditya Karikaaludu is a dream role for the actor, and he completely makes use of every bit of opportunity given by his idol, Mani Ratnam. Vikram always thought of playing this kind of role in a historical film, and the audience can feel the excitement and energy he brings on screen in playing Aditya Karikaaludu.

Karthi as Vandiyadevudu plays the role of Aditya Karikaala�??s close and trusted friend. Karthi is the sole runner of the film and explores the major portion of the first half on a mission. The special highlight of Karthi�??s performance is his looks and actions in the song Raachasa Maavaya.

Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varma, aka Ponniyin Selvan, gets his part in the second half in a few interesting scenes. Well, he is super cool in them and justifies the titular role completely. More from him is expected in the sequel.

Aishwarya Rai and Trisha (as Nandini and Kundavai, respectively) are the two beautiful, powerful, and delightful ladies of the film. Their looks, appearance, body language, and what not, every bit of their screen presence and performance looks elegant and royal. An ultimate face-off between the two actresses in a major sequence in the second half of the film just lit the screen.

Aishwarya Lekshmi and Sobhita Dhulipala are good and decent in their roles. Both the actresses justified their roles. Prakash Raj, Sarathkumar, Jayaram, and all the other actors get small but important roles. They are all well suited to their respective roles.

Technicalities

Mani Ratnam is a name well known to Indian film lovers, mostly for his dramas. Action is never his cup of tea, as is known from his filmography. The story of �??Ponniyin Selvan�??, as adapted from the original novel, is a perfect pick by Mani Ratnam. Just like his tastes and choices, the story of �??Ponniyin Selvan�?? is also more of a drama than action. Mani Ratnam perfectly made use of all the beautiful historical characters and the events between them. Thus, �??PS 1�?? comes out as a well-narrated drama. Credit goes to the legendary director here for consuming the entire five volumes of the original story and delivering it to the audience in just two chapters with a clean and clear narration. He should be appreciated for such an amazing and impactful visual wonder he had created Mani Ratnam.

AR Rahman is the true magician of the film. The audience experienced a lot of what the duo of Rahman and Mani Ratnam can do together, from their filmography. The duo repeats the magic here. AR Rahman�??s choice of instruments for the background score to bring the original flavours of the history. The Telugu audience has a special gift here from AR Rahman in PS 1. After a long gap, AR Rahman gives his mesmerising vocals in Telugu for the song �??Ponge Nadhi�??. All the technical aspects of the film tick all the right boxes and are exceptional. Special credit goes to the departments of production design, camera, and costumes.

I am disappointed by the movie. I grew up on the novel, and like so many of my age, read it a number of times in the 60s and 70s from bound volumes that my mother had made from the serialized publication in the early 50s. I just reread it after watching the movie to make sure that it wasn’t some vague nostalgia from 50 years ago. No it is not. The writing still sparkles. The writing has poetry (I don't mean just quotations of poems, Kalki's prose was poetic), subtlety of characters with complex contradictions beautifully captured in prose. All that was missing in the movie. Instead, it was black and white (metaphorically). The powerful women of the novel - Nandini, Kundavai, Poonkuzhali, Sembiyan Madeviar - are all flattened. The men of great allure in the novel - Vandiaythevan, Arulmozhy, Sendan Amuthan - have no allure in the movie. Just dull looks and bodies, and in the case of the first two, mere modern-day Tamil movie swashbuckling cartoons. Yes, Azhvarkadiyan is portrayed perfectly, but that is about it. One of Kalki’s characters describes Vandiyathevan as "Brhaspati in wisdom, Saraswati in learning, Manmata in Beauty, and Arjuna in accomplishing ends". Sorry, Karti doesn't cut it. Yes, the CGI is great, and compensates a bit for the lack of poetry. But not enough.

The movie totally lacks life since the actors such as Karthi do not speak classical tamil. He simply doesn't fit in this ancient role with his too casual and contemporary acting. I wish they provided a zero rating option to totally trash this movie.

‘జయం’ రవి, కార్తీ, ఐశ్వర్యా రాయ్, త్రిష, ఐశ్వర్యా లక్ష్మి, ప్రకాష్‌రాజ్, శరత్‌కుమార్, విక్రమ్‌ ప్రభు, శోభిత ధూళిపాళ, కీలక పాత్రల్లో నటించిన చిత్రం ‘పొన్నియిన్‌ సెల్వన్‌’ (PS–1’). మణిరత్నం దర్శకత్వంలో లైకా ప్రొడక్షన్స్, మద్రాస్‌ టాకీస్‌ నిర్మించాయి. తెలుగు, తమిళ్, హిందీ, మలయాళం,  కన్నడంలో తెరకెక్కిన ఈ సినిమా తొలి భాగం ‘PS–1’ నేడు(సెప్టెంబర్‌ 30) విడుదలైంది.  ఈ చిత్రాన్ని తెలుగులో ‘దిల్‌’ రాజు రిలీజ్‌ చేశారు. 

లెజెండరీ ఫిల్మ్ మేకర్ మణిరత్నం నాలుగేళ్ల విరామం తర్వాత  చేసిన సినిమా... అందులోను ఆయన డ్రీమ్ ప్రాజెక్ట్ కావడంతో పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్‌ భారీ అంచనాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. దానికి తోడు ఇటీవల విడుదలైన టీజర్‌, ట్రైలర్‌ సినిమాపై హైప్‌ క్రియేట్‌ చేశాయి. 

ఇప్పటికే ఓవర్సీస్‌తో పాటు పలు చోట్ల ఫస్ట్‌డే ఫస్ట్‌ షో పడిపోయింది. దీంతో ఈ సినిమా చూసిన ప్రేక్షకులు సోషల్‌ మీడియా వేదికగా తమ అభిప్రాయాన్ని తెలియజేస్తున్నారు. ‘పొన్నియన్‌ సెల్వన్‌’ కథేంటి? ఎలా ఉంది? తదితర విషయాలను ట్విటర్‌ వేదికగా చర్చిస్తున్నారు. అవేంటో చూడండి. అయితే ఇది కేవలం ప్రేక్షకుడి అభిప్రాయం మాత్రమే. ఇందులో పేర్కొన్న వారు పేర్కొన్న అంశాలకు ‘సాక్షి’బాధ్యత వహించదు.

విజువల్స్‌ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ , మ్యూజిక్ చాలా బాగున్నాయని చెబుతున్నారు. ‘అద్భుతమైన విజువల్స్‌ ఉన్న ఇలాంటి సినిమాను మణిరత్నం కేవలం 155 రోజుల్లో రెండు భాగాలను ఎలా తెరకెక్కించారో ఊహించుకోవడం కష్టమే. అతని డ్రీమ్‌ ప్రాజెక్ట్‌ కాబట్టి ఇది సాధ్యమై ఉండొచ్చు. మణిరత్నం కష్టానికి ఫలితం దక్కిందని ఓ నెటిజన్‌ కామెంట్‌ చేశాడు.
