The resources on this page will hopefully help you teach AO2 and AO3 of the new GCSE specification - problem solving and reasoning.

This brief lesson is designed to lead students into thinking about how to solve mathematical problems. It features ideas of strategies to use, clear steps to follow and plenty of opportunities for discussion.

problem solving maths worksheet

The PixiMaths problem solving booklets are aimed at "crossover" marks (questions that will be on both higher and foundation) so will be accessed by most students. The booklets are collated Edexcel exam questions; you may well recognise them from elsewhere. Each booklet has 70 marks worth of questions and will probably last two lessons, including time to go through answers with your students. There is one for each area of the new GCSE specification and they are designed to complement the PixiMaths year 11 SOL.

These problem solving starter packs are great to support students with problem solving skills. I've used them this year for two out of four lessons each week, then used Numeracy Ninjas as starters for the other two lessons.  When I first introduced the booklets, I encouraged my students to use scaffolds like those mentioned here , then gradually weaned them off the scaffolds. I give students some time to work independently, then time to discuss with their peers, then we go through it as a class. The levels correspond very roughly to the new GCSE grades.

Some of my favourite websites have plenty of other excellent resources to support you and your students in these assessment objectives.

@TessMaths has written some great stuff for BBC Bitesize.

There are some intersting though-provoking problems at Open Middle.

I'm sure you've seen it before, but if not, check it out now! Nrich is where it's at if your want to provide enrichment and problem solving in your lessons.

MathsBot  by @StudyMaths has everything, and if you scroll to the bottom of the homepage you'll find puzzles and problem solving too.

I may be a little biased because I love Edexcel, but these question packs are really useful.

The UKMT has a mentoring scheme that provides fantastic problem solving resources , all complete with answers.

I have only recently been shown Maths Problem Solving and it is awesome - there are links to problem solving resources for all areas of maths, as well as plenty of general problem solving too. Definitely worth exploring!

Multiplication Facts Worksheets

Welcome to the multiplication facts worksheets page at Math-Drills.com! On this page, you will find Multiplication worksheets for practicing multiplication facts at various levels and in a variety of formats. This is our most popular page due to the wide variety of worksheets for multiplication available. Or it could be that learning multiplication facts and multiplication strategies are essential to many topics in mathematics beyond third grade math.

Learning multiplication facts to the point of quick recall should be a goal for all students and will serve them well in their math studies. Multiplication facts are actually easier to learn than you might think. First of all, it is only essential to learn the facts from 1 to 9. Somewhere along the way students can learn that anything multiplied by zero is zero. Hopefully, that is an easy one. Students also need to learn to multiply by ten as a precursor to learning how to multiply other powers of ten. After those three skills are learned, everything else is long multiplication. Multiplying by 11 is actually two-digit multiplication. Now, learning fact tables of 11 and beyond will do no harm to those students who are keen and able to learn these things quickly, and it might help them figure out how many eggs are in a gross faster than anyone else, but keep it simple for those students who struggle a bit more.

Multiplication Facts Tables

problem solving maths worksheet

The multiplication tables with individual questions include a separate box for each number. In each box, the single number is multiplied by every other number with each question on one line. The tables may be used for various purposes such as introducing the multiplication tables, skip counting, as a lookup table, patterning activities, and memorizing.

The compact multiplication tables are basically lookup charts. To look up a multiplication fact, find the first factor in the column header and the second factor in the row headers; then use straight edges, your fingers or your eyes to find where the column and row intersect to get the product. These tables are better than the previous tables for finding patterns, but they can be used in similar ways. Each PDF includes a filled out table page and a blank table page. The blank tables can be used for practice or assessment. You might also make a game out of it, such as "Pin the Fact on the Table" (a play on Pin the Tail on the Donkey). Students are given a product (answer) and they pin it on an enlarged version or the table (photocopier enlargement, interactive whiteboard, overhead projector, etc.). Paper-saving versions with multiple tables per page are included. The left-handed versions of the multiplication tables recognize that students who use their left hands might block the row headings on the right-handed versions.

Five Minute Multiplication Frenzies

problem solving maths worksheet

Five minute frenzy charts are 10 by 10 grids that are used for multiplication fact practice (up to 12 x 12) and improving recall speed. They are very much like compact multiplication tables, but all the numbers are mixed up, so students are unable to use skip counting to fill them out. In each square, students write the product of the column number and the row number. They try to complete the chart in a set time with an accuracy goal (such as less than five minutes and score 98 percent or better).

It is important to note here that you should NOT have students complete five minute frenzies if they don't already know all of the multiplication facts that appear on them. If you want them to participate with the rest of the class, cross off the rows and columns that they don't know and have them complete a modified version. Remember, these charts are for practice and improving recall, not a teaching tool by itself.

Students who write with their left hands may cover the row headings on the right-handed versions, so the left-handed versions have the row headings on the other side.

When learning multiplication facts, it is useful to have each fact isolated on a set of practice questions to help reinforce the individual fact. The following worksheets isolate each fact. These worksheets can be used as practice sheets, assessment sheets, or in conjunction with another teaching strategy such as manipulative use.

Some students find it easier to focus on one multiplication fact at a time. These multiplication worksheets include some repetition, of course, as there is only one thing to multiply by. Once students practice a few times, these facts will probably get stuck in their heads for life. Some of the later versions include a range of focus numbers. In those cases, each question will randomly have one of the focus numbers in question. For example, if the range is 6 to 8, the question might include a 6, 7 or 8 or more than one depending on which other factor was chosen for the second factor.

What Should My Child Know Before Learning Long Division?

Before diving into teaching long division, children must have a solid foundation in several key areas. These pre-requisites ensure that they are prepared for the complexities of long division:

  • Understanding Multiplication: Kids should be comfortable with multiplication facts up to 12. This knowledge is fundamental because long division requires frequent multiplication to check and subtract products during the division steps.

Here are some fun activities to brush up your child’s understanding of multiplication facts:

Card Image

  • Basic Division Concepts: Ensure children understand the concept of division as sharing or grouping equally. They should be able to perform simple division tasks without remainders, using numbers that are easy to handle.

Here are some fun activities to brush up your child’s understanding of division facts:

  • Familiarity with Subtraction: Subtraction is a significant part of the long division process, used to find the difference after multiplying the divisor. Children should be confident in subtracting large numbers, as they will need to do this repeatedly in each step of long division.

Assess how well your kids are versed with subtraction with these fun subtraction games :

  • Number Sense: Good number sense , or an understanding of how numbers work and relate to each other, helps children anticipate the results of multiplication and division, making the process of long division smoother and more intuitive.

Ensuring kids are proficient in these areas makes teaching long division more effective, setting them up for success.

How to Teach Long Division in 6 Steps

Before learning the steps of long division, kids need to understand the key terms used throughout the process. Knowing these will help them follow long division strategies more easily.

  • Dividend: This is the number being divided in the problem. In the long division layout, the dividend is written inside the long division bracket (often called the “house”).
  • Divisor: The number dividing the dividend is called the divisor . The divisor is placed outside the long division bracket.
  • Quotient: The quotient is the answer or the result of the division problem. This is written above the bracket, aligned with the digits of the dividend being divided.
  • Remainder: If the division isn’t exact, there’s an amount left over called the remainder . The remainder is written as “R” followed by the remaining value after the division process.

Introduce long division layout

Setting up a long division problem correctly is an essential skill for kids to learn. Here’s how to structure it visually:

  • Write the Dividend Inside: Start by placing the dividend (the number being divided) inside the long division bracket, often called the “house.” This makes it clear that this number is the one being split into smaller groups.
  • Place the Divisor Outside: Write the divisor (the number doing the dividing) outside, to the left of the bracket. This shows which number will be used repeatedly to divide the dividend into smaller groups.
  • Draw Lines for the Quotient: The space above the bracket is where the quotient (the result of the division) will be written. Each digit of the quotient will align above the digit or digits of the dividend that are being divided.

1: Set Up the Problem

Write 1564 under the division bar and 27 outside the division bar.

  • Look at the first two digits of the dividend (15). Since 15 is less than 27, we need to include the next digit, making it 156.
  • Now, determine how many times 27 can fit into 156. 27 goes into 156 a total of 5 times because 27 multiplied by 6 (the next higher number) would exceed 156.

3. Multiply

  • Multiply the quotient digit found (5) by the divisor (27), which equals 135.
  • Write 135 under 156.

4. Subtract

  • Subtract 135 from 156, which equals 21.
  • Write 21 below 135.

5. Bring Down

Bring down the next digit of the dividend (the 4 in 1564), making the new number 214.

6. Repeat the Process

  • Determine how many times 27 can fit into 214. It fits 7 times (since 27 multiplied by 8 exceeds 214).
  • Multiply 27 by 7 (the next quotient digit) to get 189.
  • Write 189 under 214, and subtract to find the difference: 214 – 189 = 25.

7. Remainder

  • Since there are no more digits to bring down, 25 is the remainder.
  • The complete quotient is 57 with a remainder of 25.

After understanding the layout, kids can apply what they’ve learned by playing these games in, each focusing on different levels of difficulty:

  • Dividing 2-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit

  • Dividing 3-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit

  • Dividing 4-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit

Card Image

  • Divide 4-Digit By 2-Digit Numbers

Card Image

To build a strong foundation in long division, it’s crucial for children to practice problems where they bring down each digit consecutively without the complication of zeros . This helps them focus on mastering the basic steps of division:

Sequential Bringing Down: Start with simpler numbers where each digit in the dividend needs to be brought down one at a time. This practice solidifies their understanding of the division process step by step.

Example Problems:

  • 21 ÷ 3: Begin by dividing the first digit. Since 2 divided by 3 doesn’t work, we use 21. 21 divided by 3 equals 7, so 7 is written above the division bar.
  • 154 ÷ 7: Start with the first digit. 1 divided by 7 is not possible, so consider the first two digits, 15. 15 divided by 7 equals 2. Write 2 above the division bar, multiply 2 by 7 (which is 14), subtract 14 from 15 to get 1, then bring down the next digit to make it 14. Continue this way.

Handling zeros can be tricky, but it’s one of the key ways to teach long division. Here’s how to approach problems involving zeros:

Example: 120 ÷ 4

  • Divide: Start by dividing the first non-zero digit. Since 1 is smaller than 4, look at the first two digits, 12. Divide 12 by 4 to get 3.
  • Write the Quotient: Write 3 above the long division bracket.
  • Multiply and Subtract: Multiply 3 by 4 (giving 12) and subtract this from 12, leaving 0.
  • Bring Down Zeros: Bring down the next digit, which is 0, making it 0. Divide this 0 by 4 to get 0. Write 0 next to the 3 in the quotient.
  • Multiply and Subtract: Multiply 0 by 4 to get 0 and subtract, leaving no remainder.

In some cases, division doesn’t result in an even quotient. This means there’s an amount leftover, called a remainder. Here’s how to handle it:

Example: 29 ÷ 4

  • Divide: Start by dividing the first digit, 2, by 4. Since 2 is smaller than 4, consider the first two digits, 29.
  • Find the Quotient: Divide 29 by 4 to get 7. Write 7 above the long division bracket.
  • Multiply and Subtract: Multiply 7 by 4, which gives 28. Subtract 28 from 29, leaving 1.
  • Write the Remainder: Since there’s nothing left to bring down, write “R1” (remainder of 1) next to the 7.

Knowing how to recognize and handle remainders is one of the essential long division tricks that help kids understand why not all division problems divide evenly.
