Tips to captivate your audience with the photographs in your presentation

A picture is worth a thousand words. We have heard this phrase hundreds of times and with reason. A photograph can help us to better express our ideas, to emphasise them, to bring them to life, to touch our audience, etc. As a matter of fact, we process images 60,000 times faster than texts. That's why today we are giving you several photography presentation ideas that will help you prepare a brilliant exposition.

Choose photography according to the context of the presentation

Pay attention to the quality of the images, where to include the photos in the slides.

Photographs should add value to your presentation. Always keep in mind what the goal of the presentation is and what you want to achieve with each image. Do you want to excite the public, put them in a particular situation, visually explain a problem, etc.? 

Think about what you want to make your public feel and look for pictures that help you achieve it and that are consistent with the copy. Both text and photos have to complement each other in order to help convey your ideas clearly. In this way, you will make it easier for your audience to understand your message and make them remember more. 

Also adapt the photographs to the people you are addressing. For example, text and images will have a different tone in a formal business presentation than in a creative strategy proposal to a client. In the second option you have more freedom and can use more daring images than in the first situation.

Finally, think about including an image that interacts with the public and, at the same time, pauses your speech. Try including slides with questions or quotes that make your audience think, like the example below. If the tone of the presentation allows it, include an image with a more humorous tone that relaxes the atmosphere.

Make sure that the images you choose are the right quality (minimum 800x600 pixels). A pixelated photo will detract from the quality of your photography Google Slides and PowerPoint presentations.

Another thing to keep in mind is image optimization. If your presentation includes many photographs and they are not optimised, the final file size will be too big. This will make it difficult for you to share your presentation by email and could even cause errors.

The layout is also important. Play with it. Instead of including three horizontal photographs, try putting two horizontal and one vertical, or vice versa. It will make it more dynamic, as in the example below:

Watch the size of the photos. Are all the elements clear? You will have to make images bigger or smaller depending on their composition. This will also influence the number of pictures you can insert. The bigger they are, the smaller the number. And always keep in mind the final objective of the photo and the presentation.

Presenting images alongside your text is a surefire way to make your slides more eye-catching, but it takes some finesse to give your audience information without the overload.

Creating an aesthetically pleasing PowerPoint can be a make-or-break deal, and the photos you use – along with the the right combination of colors, fonts and other graphic elements – can either convey professional credibility and inspiration, or be a jumbled mess that your audience won’t know how to decipher. In this guide, we’ll go over the best practices for using images in PowerPoint (or the slide deck program of your choice).

Tips for Presenting Images

Text, colors, and icons can’t always do the heavy lifting of a presentation on their own — using photos in PowerPoint will make your ideas feel more immediate, human, and relatable. Think about your key messages and your brand identity before adding images to your presentation. What story are you trying to tell? What audience are you trying to speak to?

Visuals are essential to creating an engaging presentation. Audiences will tune out if they see nothing but text.

Generally, you should focus on adding photos to your PowerPoint that support and emphasize your key statements, rather than overshadow or distract from them. Selecting more muted background images for presentation slides can also maintain the look, feel, and texture you desire without attracting too much focus.

Here, we’ve compiled a handy guide to the Do’s and Don’ts of PowerPoint presentation design and selecting the right images:

1. Use High Quality Photos

Nothing can tarnish your professional credibility quicker than seeing a blurry, pixelated image in your presentation. This is why adding high-resolution stock photography to your presentation is a must, and drawing from the wealth of professional photos available on a site like Noun Project will lend your slides an immediate air of professionalism.

When you’ve found a stock photo you like, be sure to download it in the resolution you want. Noun Project offers many photos for free in a lower resolution, but depending on how large your final presentation will be, you’ll want the highest resolution that can be expanded to fit your screen without pixelation. Always double check to make sure that the picture still looks crisp at full screen size.

Tip: Standard screen resolutions are 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high (and most default PowerPoint templates have these dimensions). Be sure your photo is at least the same dimension if you’re doing a full screen size to avoid pixelation.

2. Practice Consistency

Chances are, your entire presentation focuses on a single overarching idea and the photos you use should reflect that. In addition to finding the right subjects, pay attention to the other aesthetic qualities of the photos you bring in. Are they in a similar, complementary color scheme? Are they shot in similar environments for a consistent tone (e.g., sleek and corporate, rugged and outdoorsy, urban and gritty, or light and playful)?

Use images in PowerPoint that support and accentuate your theme and overall tone. The images you use throughout should complement each other without repeating or looking too dissimilar.

The most fail-proof way to ensure consistency is to draw from an individual photographer or a particular photo shoot. Stock photographers will often shoot several different angles, poses and variations from a single scene, so you can find just the right shot for each slide and remind your audience that this is all part of one cohesive message.

Bear in mind, though, that you don’t want to use too many similar images — the more you can change scenes without shifting the tone, the better.

Once you have your desired photos downloaded (and ideally put in the same folder in your hard drive), here’s how to add pictures to PowerPoint:

• Simply click and drag the picture file (as .JPG or .PNG) from your file finder window into the PowerPoint pane. You may see the “Design Ideas” toolbar pop up on the side of your pane, with different options you can try out to arrange visual elements.
• Alternatively, go to Insert > Pictures > Picture from file , and select the photo you want from your finder.

3. Avoid Photo Clutter

The photos you add to your PowerPoint should be presented one at a time, or minimally enough to maintain focus — too many photos can cause clutter and become distracting. You don’t want the photo to be the sole star of the show — you want it to support your statements and add emotional resonance to your messages.

There may, however, be occasions when you want to use multiple images that support a unifying topic: for example, steps in a process or different ways that customers can purchase your product.

If you ever want to add one or more smaller photos, rather than a large background image, here are a few rules of thumb:

• Crop the photos to the same size or shape: Having mixed dimensions makes the overall composition feel unbalanced. Whether you choose a square, rectangle, or circle shape for your photos, making them all the same size and shape will boost the scannability of your page.
• Group and align: Again, scannability is key. When you group the elements of your page together in an even and consistent way, people will visually register the pattern and can digest the content more quickly. For example, you may have three groupings that consist of an image, headline, and descriptive body text. Make sure that these elements are (1) clustered together so they form one unified thought, (2) grouped to match each other so they form a visual “rhythm” across the page with equal text sizes, line weights, and image dimensions, and (3) aligned and justified along the X or Y axis for legibility (in PowerPoint, select multiple objects and go to Arrange > Align to line them up along the same axis).
• If using different sized photos, fit them together into a cohesive shape . A binding element like a grid with solid lines will help the photos appear on the page like neatly fitted puzzle pieces. Again, keep overall alignment in mind — the more your content stays organized in tidy rows and columns, the more scannable it will be.

If you must use multiple photos, PowerPoint’s Design Ideas toolbar will give you options to array them in a neatly aligned grid. Focus on creating a tidy overarching shape to avoid the cluttered “collage” effect.

4. Choose Photos Over Clipart

Clipart has been nearly synonymous with PowerPoint and other programs since the ’90s, but unfortunately hasn’t evolved much with the times. While a piece of clipart from the web may encapsulate or accentuate your key themes, keep in mind these aesthetic considerations:

• Professional credibility is lost when your design looks “dated” or “cartoonish,” but gained when your presentation is sleek and modern.
• While aiming for visual consistency, also bear in mind that more muted and subtle visuals — from the photos you choose to the icons that illustrate your key points — help keep the focus on your words and ideas, rather than your visual aids
• If you want to add a more sleek, modernized look, browse Noun Project’s collection of over 3 million icons to find a corresponding set to include.

For a more polished and modern look, go for minimalist and visually consistent icons to accentuate key messages, rather than clipart.

5. Don’t Use Watermarked Images

Even if it is small, a watermark can be distracting and, once spotted, can negatively impact your credibility. Be sure to use free photos and credit the photographer, or pay for the photos you use in your presentations to avoid the loss of credibility and trust that can occur when you use watermarked images.

Let’s cover the basics of how to cite images in a presentation: Questions about fees, licenses, and usage rights are common, and citing images in a presentation is the standard expectation for free photos so that the photographer gets credit. Fortunately, Noun Project Photos provides a transparent model for photo usage and licensing — any free photo download is licensed under Creative Commons, which allows you to use the photo for noncommercial purposes, without creating derivatives, as long as you provide attribution to the photographer.

The “Basic Download” option will not only give you a free, CC-licensed image, but tell you exactly what attribution information you should include when you cite it. Once you click “Get This Photo,” you’ll see the image title and photographer name listed in a text box — simply copy the text and include it on your slide to properly cite the image.

Your presentation may have a footer for notes, where such a citation could easily fit. If not, many presentations will have all the attributions listed on a final page. Under Creative Commons, both methods are acceptable.

6. Maintain Diversity in Photos

The truth is incontrovertible: representation matters. Stock photography — like much of the broader media and marketing landscape — has faced a chronic issue with only representing a particular sub-sect of the population, and more and more consumers have started to notice. 7. Keep it Simple.

Finally, slides should be readable. The visual elements you choose should bolster the core message of each slide, rather than overshadowing it. Key things to watch out for are:

• Less text, more talk . Unless you’re handing off a comprehensive sales deck, you as the presenter should be doing the talking — not the words on the page. Focus on using short bullet points to extract main ideas and keywords, rather than numerous full sentences.
• Check your text size. Bigger is better (and with less text on the page, it should have more room to breathe). But don’t forget about hierarchy: there should be a clear distinction between headlines and supporting text.
• Check legibility . Are you using simple, legible text for body copy? Does the text appear clearly against the background? Up the contrast or find a more suitable background that doesn’t strain the eye.

Search for “Copy Space” photos to add to your presentation. The best background photos to add are those that have plenty of white space for you to add your own content. While bold, busy photographs might be the most visually striking, bear in mind that your text needs room to breathe. A quick Noun Project search for “Copy Space” will lead you to more minimal photographs that include this built-in space for text.

Search for photos with copy space to give your text legibility. Tip: If you need to set text against a more visually busy background, add a semi-transparent color block. Add a rectangle (Insert > Shapes > Rectangle) underneath your text, give it a black fill, but adjust the transparency until the text becomes clearer while leaving the photo visible.

Pexels is an old standby for presentation images. Like a good friend who’s there for you no matter what you need to talk— er, present about. Their collection of free photos is one of the largest and best-organized options you’ll find. And, as an added bonus, they also have free stock videos so you can start mixing up your presentation media ( a key to audience engagement ).

The site is community-powered, so their collection of photos grows every day. Additions are hand-picked from photos uploaded by their users or sourced from free image websites (you too can contribute if you’d like). All photos uploaded to Pexels are licensed under the Pexels license, meaning you can use them for free for personal and commercial purposes.

Pixabay is a fantastic resource if you’re a business professional — particularly a content marketer. The community-powered site offers photos and videos under the Pixabay License, making them safe to use for commercial purposes.

Peruse their millions of photos for your next business presentation, project proposal, sales pitch, or anything in between. Pixabay also offers vectors and illustrations that are great for using as visuals in presentations.

6. Unsplash

Unsplash’s photo library contains thousands upon thousands of beautiful, free images of all types (and it’s also now available directly in Prezi ). Every day, their generous community of photographers gift new photos to the collection, free to use for both commercial and non-commercial purposes. No specific permission or credit is required.

The Unsplash team also curates new collections of photos every week, should you need some inspiration, and their Explore section features a number of popular picture categories. Below, see some of our favorite presentation pictures from their Food Images selection.

7. Kaboompics

Kaboompics handles their search functionality in a unique way. In addition to keywords, you can also search for presentation images by color. Get even more detailed by filtering your results by vertical or horizontal mode, select a whole photo shoot or just single shots, pick the category, and browse by newest, oldest, featured, most downloaded, least downloaded, and more.

Kaboompics also provides a complementary palette of colors with the photo of your choosing, which you can use to help design the rest of your presentation with style.

Burst is another great option for the business-minded to find presentation images. The free platform is powered by Shopify, and was built specifically to provide designers, developers, bloggers, and entrepreneurs with access to beautiful photography.

10. Pikwizard

Pikwizard is a relatively new free stock photo library, but they already boast an impressive collection of high-quality images (with 20,000 of them being exclusive to their site). No attribution is required, and you can also edit presentation images with their graphic design tool, Design Wizard.

While they have a large range of images, what helps them stand out is their fantastic selection of photos of people, something that’s missing from many other stock photography sites.

Bonus: Awesome presentation picture resources in Prezi

While all the sites we listed here are great for discovering beautiful, high-quality pictures for your presentations, an even quicker way to build out a visually compelling piece of content is to search for images from inside the presentation tool itself. Regardless of your interests, gear, or goals, having a solid foundation of the main concepts of photography is key to capturing better images and improving your photography.

However, things are not easy when you start off; What are the photography basics? Which are the fundamental concepts of digital photography? What’s the best way to learn the basic elements?

I was in that position too, and I know that it’s hard. There are plenty of photography basics articles online , but the information is often incomplete or displayed in a non-logical order.

For that reason, I decided to create this beginner’s photography guide to learning the basics .

This photography basics guide is what I’d have loved to find when I first picked up my camera; all the important information you need to understand the main photography concepts displayed in a logical and digestible order. To help you in the process, I also included plenty of examples, infographics, and photography basics cheat sheets that will make everything easier.

1. Exposure – The main element of photography

Exposure is the most important photography basic and the first photography concept that you need to understand.

You’ve probably heard before the expression “photography is painting with light”, and it’s completely true! Photography is about capturing light, and exposure is so important because it’s the amount of light collected by your camera.

The photography exposure basics are composed of different elements that we’ll discuss below like the aperture , shutter speed , and ISO . The fundamental thing to understand is the effect of exposure, which is to capture the image with a determined brightness (this is also called “Exposure Value”).

Ideally, the image should be correctly exposed , that is, with the perfect amount of brightness where you can see all the detail in the highlights and the shadows. However, in photography exposure there’s no right or wrong, and the artistic choice of many photographers is to capture an underexposed or overexposed image. For now, we’ll focus on the elements to capture a correct exposure.

Exposure basics also has other effects on the final look of the image like the depth of field , the motion , and the digital noise . We’ll also get into this throughout this photography basics tutorial .

2. Aperture – A fundamental concept in photography

Aperture is the first concept of the photography exposure basics .

In brief, the aperture works like our pupils; it’s the opening of the camera lens, which controls the amount of light that goes through the lens to the camera sensor.

This basic photography concept has a direct effect on the exposure; the wider the aperture the brighter the image will be, and the narrower the aperture the darker it will be. It also plays a significant role in the depth of field and sharpness of the image.

The max. and min. aperture of the lens is defined by a value known as “F-stop” . The larger the F-stop number is, the smaller/narrower the aperture and vice versa. This number follows a sequence like this:

The best aperture camera settings will depend on the light, the subject that you’re shooting, and the final look that you want in your image.

3. Shutter Speed – A key element for beginner photography

The second photography fundamental related to exposure basics is the shutter speed .

In short, shutter speed is related to how long the camera shutter is open and capturing light.

This has a significant impact on the exposure ; a shorter shutter speed will translate into a darker image whereas a longer shutter speed will capture a brighter image.

Shutter speed is also a photography fundamental for capturing motion , something vital in some genres like long exposure photography . It also has an effect on the camera shakiness and the possibility of shooting handheld vs. the need for using a tripod.

The main way to measure shutter speed is using seconds and fractions of a second following a sequence like this:

4. ISO – A must in any beginner’s photography guide

The last of the exposure photography basics is the ISO .

In short, the ISO works by increasing the light information captured by the camera sensor.

This has a drastic effect on the exposure ; the higher the ISO , the brighter the image will be, and the lower the ISO , the darker the photograph will be.

Apart from exposure, ISO has a major side effect called “ digital noise ”. As you increase the ISO, your image will be brighter but will also have more digital noise, which is an important element related to the quality of the image.

The ISO number is usually measured using “ ISO levels ”, which follows this sequence:

The main ISO camera settings will depend on the available light. If you’re shooting in low-light or night environments, you’ll have to use a higher ISO if you want to capture the right exposure. The same applies if you want to use a narrow aperture or fast shutter speed and there’s not enough light. You’ll have to strike a balance with the other photography basics. This might seem complex but it’s rather easy as you’ll see in the next photography concept.

5. Exposure triangle – the secret to understanding the photography basics

Once you understand the photography basics of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO , it’s time to put them all together!

The best way to see how these elements interact with each other is through the exposure triangle .

The exposure triangle is included in most beginning photography guides , and it’s simply an analogy to explain the effects and interaction of the main photography basics of exposure. According to this, all three elements must be in balance if you want to capture a correctly exposed image. So, when you adjust one side of the triangle, you’ll have to adjust one or the two other sides to strike a balance.

For instance, if you open your aperture, you’ll have to either reduce the shutter speed or decrease the ISO to achieve the same amount of brightness (exposure level).

Using the exposure triangle is one of the best basic photography tips for beginners , and once you understand it, it’s very easy to put it into practice.

6. Depth of field – A basic concept in photography

One of the fundamentals of digital photography is the depth of field .

In short, depth of field is simply the space in the image that is acceptably sharp and in focus.

In photography, we can say that there’s a shallow depth of field when just a narrow portion of the frame is acceptably sharp, whereas we speak about a large depth of field when a big portion of the frame is considered to be in focus.

Depth of field is affected by many different factors:

• Aperture : The wider the aperture, the shallower the depth of field
• Focal length : The longer the focal length, the shallower the depth of field
• Focusing distance : The closer the subject to the lens, the shallower the depth of field
• Sensor size : The smaller the camera sensor size, the shallower the depth of field (*using the same focal length).

A good way to calculate the depth of field is by using a depth of field app or calculator. It’ll tell you the portion of your frame that will be reasonably sharp according to your camera, lens, and aperture.

7. Focal length – photography lens basics

Focal length is related to the photography lens basics .

It’s a vital photography concept to understand for creating your images and choosing the lenses that you’ll need in your gear.

The focal length works by describing each lens in terms of millimeters from the optical center of the lens to the sensor. Depending on how short or long the focal length is, this will have a direct impact on the field of view of your images and in other aspects like the depth of field .

For example, shorter focal lengths like wide-angle lenses will have a wide-angle of view , whereas longer focal lengths like telephotos will have a narrower angle of view . The focal length will also create different effects, like distortion in wide angles of view, and magnification in narrower angles of view.

All these elements are essential for anyone who is beginning in photography since it will affect the final look of your subject and image.

8. Sensor size – A good photography fundamental to learn

Another photography fundamental for beginners that often goes overlooked is the camera sensor size .

The camera sensor size is truly important. There’s not an absolute best sensor size in photography, but rather different sensor sizes for different photographic needs.

The size used as a reference in digital photography is the classic 35 mm sensor size , also known as Full-Frame . If the sensor is smaller than this size, it’s said to be “ cropped ”, and if it’s bigger, it’s considered “ medium format. “ Knowing the different types of sensors, their qualities, and what they can achieve, is also crucial to taking the pictures that you want.

For example, a basic rule in night photography is to use a sensor with larger pixels , since these are better at capturing light and will allow you to take a better-quality image with less digital noise.

The focal length is also important since smaller sensors will offer more reach and greater magnification for shooting subjects far away like in wildlife or sports.

The depth of field is the last effect of the camera sensors. Using the same field of view, the depth of field will be narrower in cameras with larger sensors and larger in cameras with cropped sensors. An example is portrait photography, where photographers usually shoot with larger sensors to decrease the depth of field and bokeh effect .

As you can see, understanding the sensor size is one of those photography basics that you must pay attention to.

9. Focus – An essential concept to master

Focusing is one of the most common struggles for anyone beginning in photography .

Briefly, focusing consists of adjusting the lens to find the maximum sharpness, contrast, and resolution for a chosen subject.

There are two ways to focus in digital photography :

• Manual focus : Using your hands to tweak the focus ring until you get to the best focus.
• Automatic focus : Using the camera’s and lenses’ internal motors to focus on a given subject.

Using manual focus or autofocus will depend on the type of photography that you do. For instance, in some genres like macro and night photography, it’s better to use manual focus. Yet, in other genres, like wildlife or sports, autofocus is faster and will make things easier.

In some genres like landscape photography, you can focus on a specific distance that will help you achieve the maximum depth of field (or reasonable sharpness). This is called the Hyperfocal distance and it’s one of the best photography basics to learn . There are also more advanced techniques to achieve maximum sharpness like focus stacking that you can apply if you already have some experience. 

Talking about cameras , these are very different in terms of their focusing capabilities. Basic cameras usually have worse focusing capabilities like fewer focus points, and they are less reliable, while advanced cameras have a better focusing capacity even in low-light situations.

10. Sharpness – The vital photography basic for better quality

Sharpness is a basic photography concept that can be more technical than others, but it’s rather easy to understand.

In a nutshell, sharpness is just how clearly detail is captured and processed in an image.

There are many factors affecting the sharpness of an image, like the sensor resolution , the lens , and even some photography basics that we already covered like the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

The editing basics and post-processing techniques are also important to achieve more sharpness. Images usually lack detail when they are taken straight out of camera (something called “softness” in photography), and you can correct this by using some sharpening software.

Lastly, the viewing distance is another important factor affecting sharpness. By definition, the perception of sharpness increases as the viewing distance of the image grows. That’s why billboards have a very small resolution when looked at closely.

11. Camera Settings – Basic photography settings

Once you understand the basic photography concepts , it’s time to put them into practice using the main photography settings on camera!

In short, these are the best camera settings for anyone starting in photography :

• Aperture : f/1.8-f/5.6 in low light or for a narrower depth of field, and f/8-f/16 for a wider DoF
• Shutter Speed : From 30 seconds to 1/4000 th of a second depending on the scene
• ISO : 100-3200 in entry-level cameras, and 100-6400 in more advanced cameras
• Camera Mode : Manual camera mode or Aperture-priority mode
• Metering Mode : Matrix/Multi/Evaluative depending on your camera model
• Focus Mode : AF-S for stills and AF-C for moving subjects
• Focus Area : Single-point for stills and Dynamic/Zone for moving subjects
• White Balance : Automatic WB
• File Format : Raw File (or JPEG if you don’t want to edit your pictures)
• Drive Mode : Single shooting for stills and continuous for moving subjects
• Long exposure noise reduction : Off
• High ISO noise reduction : Off
• Color Space : sRGB
• Image stabilization : On when shooting handheld and Off when shooting from a tripod
• HDR/DRO : Off

12. Camera Modes – The basics to make the most of your camera

Understanding camera modes is one of the basics in photography to help you familiarize yourself with your camera and improve as a photographer.

To put it simply, camera modes are the camera controls that allow the photographer to choose the main exposure settings for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

They’re also called “ shooting modes, “ and these are the main modes available in most digital cameras:

• Program Camera mode (“P Mode”) : Using this mode, the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture.
• Shutter Priority Mode (“Tv/S Mode” ): You set the shutter speed and the camera selects the aperture.
• Aperture Priority Mode (“Av/A Mode”) : You set the aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed.
• Manual Camera Mode (“M Mode”) : You set all the main settings on camera.

Using each mode will depend on your subject and your photographic skills, but generally, learning when to use the different camera modes is basic photography knowledge .

13. Metering Modes – The fundamental lighting concepts

Another photography fundamental for starters is the metering modes .

In short, metering modes are simply the way your camera calculates the available light of the scene. In photography, this can be done using the built-in exposure meter in camera or a handheld device .

Understanding how light works in photography is a basic concept that any photographer must know, and it’s the first step in learning the different ways your camera can calculate the light of the scene.

These are the basic metering modes to calculate the light in most digital cameras:

• Multi/Matrix metering : This mode evaluates the light of the entire scene by dividing the frame into different zones.
• Center-weighted metering : This mode uses the center of the frame to measure the light of the scene.
• Spot metering : Using this mode, the camera uses a single focus point to read the light.

By default, one of the basic photography techniques in any DSLR or mirrorless camera is to use Multi/Matrix metering , which will be accurate in most situations. However, in some particular scenarios, you might benefit from using either Center or Spot metering.

14. Focus Modes & Areas – Photography basics for any genre

You can’t learn the photography basics without understanding how the focus modes and areas work.

The focus modes help you decide whether you want the camera to lock the focus on a subject or to keep adjusting the focus as the subject moves across the frame.

The two main focus modes are:

• Single Autofocus Mode (AF-S/One-shot AF) : The camera locks the focus on a subject and, if the subject moves, you’ll have to press the focus button again and repeat the process.➜ Best for stills, landscape, macro, astro, etc.
• Continuous Autofocus Mode (AF-C/AI-Servo): After focusing, the camera will track the subject when it moves within the frame. ➜ Best for action, wildlife, sports, street, etc.

Moving into the focus areas , these will help you set where the camera seeks to focus within a scene.

To do this, your camera uses different focus points and AI technology. In some genres, using a specific focus area is fundamental. That’s why the focus areas are one of the wildlife photography basics and it’s also vital in other genres like sport or street photography.

In a nutshell, these are the main focus areas in photography :

• Single Point Area Mode : You can select a single focus point. ➜ Best for landscape, still portraits, macro, and architecture.
• Dynamic Area Mode : If your subject moves, your camera will use several focus points to track it. ➜ Best for wildlife, sports, and street.
• Auto Area Mode : The camera automatically decides the best focus points. ➜ Best for scenes where you need to focus on something easy and close to the camera.

15. White Balance – A must in any photography guide

White balance is one of those easy to understand photography basics .

Briefly, white balance is a photography concept aimed at capturing accurate colors in your image without being affected by the color of the light source. White Balance is related to color temperature , which is measured in “Kelvins” or “K” . The higher the K number, the cooler the color will be.

In your camera, you’ll have several white balance options :

• Automatic white balance (AWB) : The camera automatically adjusts the best WB camera setting.
• White balance Presets (Semi-Automatic White Balance) : The camera includes different preset modes related to different color temperatures.
• White balance manual camera setting (Custom white balance mode) : You can manually adjust the white balance by either creating a custom white balance or setting a specific Kelvin number.

One of the best photography basic tips is to set the white balance to automatic . Thankfully, the white balance is a setting that you can change in post-processing without affecting the quality of the image, as long as you shoot in Raw.

16. Histogram – Understand the exposure basics

The histogram is a photography concept that most people beginning in photography find daunting. It looks like complex mathematics but, believe me, it’s very easy to understand and one of the most useful tools in your camera.

In a few words, the histogram is just a graphic representation of the exposure levels within an image. Using the histogram, you’ll be able to see a more accurate representation of the highlights and shadows of your image.

Reading the histogram is one of the basics in digital photography and will help you see if your image is correctly exposed or under/overexposed.

17. Composition – An indispensable photography basic

Beyond photography settings, gear, and other technical aspects, if you want your pictures to speak for themselves, one of the photography basics to master is the composition .

Composition  is the language of photography, and using different compositional elements and rules, you’ll be able to capture and shape your visual message. When you compose your image, you have to arrange the elements of the scene to make them attractive to the viewer. This will also help you represent your visual message in the most harmonious and impactful way.

Composition can be broken down into different parts:

• Rules : Like the photography basic rule of thirds , the golden triangle, the rule of space, the golden spiral, the rule of odds, etc.
• Elements : Like leading lines, curves, geometric shapes, colors, etc.
• Techniques : Like symmetry, balance, repetition, patterns, scale, etc.

All these fundamentals are basic photography knowledge that you must learn if you want to capture the best possible images according to your vision.

The best way to learn composition is by studying basic photography books on composition and studying another good photographer’s or artist’s work.

18. Photography gear – Camera and lens basics

Just as a carpenter uses a hammer, the camera , lenses, and other gear are your main tools to create images.

Basic photography gear includes the following elements:

• Digital cameras : The basic is a digital camera, and preferably it’s a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. (You can see the different types in our DSLR vs. mirrorless guide ).

When you shoot in low-light, like when photographing the Milky Way , certain camera models will help you get better results. You can see different models in our guide to cameras for Milky way photography .

• Lenses : They are as equally important as cameras to shoot quality images.

The photography lens basics include a wide range from fish-eye lenses of 7-8 mm to super-telephoto lenses like 600-800 mm.

The type of lens and focal length will depend entirely on the type of photography that you’re doing. In most scenarios, your images will be in the range from 14-400 mm .

The brightness of the lens is also crucial. Lenses with a large aperture, like f/1.8 or f/2.8, are usually aimed at shooting portraits and low-light photography like astrophotography. These are called “fast lenses”. You can see some of these in our article on the best lenses for night photography .

• Tripods : A sturdy tripod is essential in some genres like long-exposure photography , Milky Way photography , Northern Lights photography , and other photographic situations.
• Lens filters : These types of filters will allow you to create long exposures and to achieve creative effects in your images. There are many different types and models that you can take a look at in our guide to camera lens filters .
• Others : There are many other pieces of gear like camera bags , SD cards , batteries , etc., and others that you might need depending on your shooting, like flashes and external lights , photography gloves , star trackers , etc.

19. Editing – Photography editing basics

One of the last photography basics consists of the final editing and processing of our images.

The photography editing basics are about striking a balance in the exposure between the highlights and the shadows, sharpening the image, managing the color, and generally fine-tuning the final image.

Some photographers also use post-processing to create artistic effects that can represent their vision. This, of course, depends on your personal taste, but editing and processing are photography fundamentals that you need to know to have well-rounded images.

For anyone beginning in photography , I always recommend checking editing video tutorials online from photographers they like and admire. It’s one of the best ways to be engaged in learning the editing basics .

Photos are everywhere. What makes a good one?

We upload some 3 billion images online each day . We make most of these photos on smartphones and use these devices to document everything from gym progress and our loved ones to a memorable meal.

But what makes a “quality” photo? Many people, even those who make images for work, struggle to answer. They often say something along the lines of “I know it when I see it”. But knowing some dimensions of a quality photograph can help make your images stand out and make you a more literate media maker and consumer.

Quality can be relative, but knowing the various dimensions at play can help you draw on those that are most relevant for your particular audience, context and purpose.

I identified six dimensions which will impact the quality of photographs. Here’s what I learnt – and what you can apply to your own photographs.

1. Production and presentation

Think of the factors in front of and behind the lens .

If you know you’re being recorded, this can affect your behaviour compared to a candid depiction.

You might be more or less comfortable posing for a friend or family member than for a stranger. This comfort, or its lack, can lead to more stiff and awkward poses, or ones that look more natural and confident.

Presentation circumstances, like the viewing size and context, also matter.

A group shot can make a nice statement piece above a fireplace, but it wouldn’t have the same effect as a profile photo. Be aware of how “busy” your image is, and whether the viewing conditions are well-suited for the nature of your photo.

Images with lots of elements, fine textures or other details need to be viewed large to be fully appreciated. Images with fewer, larger and simpler elements can usually be appreciated at smaller sizes.

2. Technical aspects

Technical aspects include proper exposure – meaning the image isn’t too dark or too bright – adequate focus, and appropriate camera settings.

Some of these camera settings, like shutter speed, affect whether motion is seen as frozen or blurred.

If the image is too blurry, too pixelated, or too light or dark, these technical aspects will negatively impact the photograph’s quality. But some motion blur, as distinct from camera shake, can make more dynamic an otherwise static composition.

3. Who or what is shown

Who or what is shown in the photographs we see is affected, in part, by access and novelty. That’s why we often make more photos during our holidays compared to documenting familiar settings.

Some people or locations can be under-represented and photographing them can lead to more visibility, and, depending on the context, a more empowering framing.

Consider in your photography if you’re including people who are typically under-represented, such as older individuals, people of colour, people living with disabilities and queer people. Also consider whether you’re representing them in stereotypical or disempowering ways.

As examples, when photographing older people , consider whether you’re showing them as lonely, isolated, passive, or in need of mobility aids.

4. Composition

Composition includes positioning of elements in the frame, the balance between positive and negative space, and depth, among others.

Generally, images that centre the subject of interest aren’t as visually engaging as images that offset the subject of interest. This is what’s known as the rule-of-thirds approach.

Likewise, images that have no depth are generally not as interesting as images with a clear foreground, midground and background. “Seeing through things” with your compositions can help increase the visual depth of your photos alongside their visual appeal.

5. The psycho-physiological

The psycho-physiological concerns how the viewer reacts to what is shown.

This includes the biological reaction we have to seeing certain colours, for example the way the colour red can increase our heart rate. It also can include the feeling we have when seeing a photo of someone we know.

The most powerful photos use colour and other elements of visual language strategically for a specific effect. Looking at these images might evoke a specific emotion, such as empathy or fear, and influence how the viewer responds.

6. Narrative

Narrative concerns the storytelling quality of the image.

Images can show something in a literal way (think a photograph from a real estate listing) or they can tell a bigger story about the content represented or about the human condition (think about some of the iconic photos that emerged during Australia’s black summer bushfire season ).

Literal photos help us see what something or someone looks like but they might not have as much of an impact as iconic photos. For example, the well-known photo of three-year-old Syrian boy Aylan Kurdi’s lifeless body on a beach in Turkey boosted fundraising for refugees 100-fold.

A more thoughtful process

Next time you pull out your smartphone to make an image, don’t just “ spray and pray ”. Try to pre-visualise the story you want to tell and wait for the elements to line up into place.

Being aware of aesthetic and ethical considerations alongisde technical ones and emotional resonance can all help engage viewers and lead to more standout imagery.

To challenge yourself further, consider taking your phone off full-auto mode and play with camera settings to see how they impact the resulting photos.

$160 + 18% service, omakase only, edomae tempura experience from a NYC experienced Michelin starred chef. Should you go? 1. The restaurant's grand opening was the start of May 2024. There are growing pains. - Very limited reservations available. (Even if online reservations indicate two seatings (17:30 / 19:30), only half the restaurant is full at any time). - Cooking for just three parties (seven diners), timing is off. It takes 30 seconds to eat a piece of tempura, wait 60 more, fry the next piece. Instead the chef waited minutes between each piece resulting in a 2.5hr meal instead of the 1.5 allotted for two seatings a night. 2. BYOB and you better. Sake or wine is absolutely necessary in a tempura centric meal. They will provide all the glassware. 3. Someone who is not a seasoned restaurant operator made decisions for the restaurant. - Tea cups are unfinished trapping dish soap in it and making the hojicha taste like chemicals. - The chef is set back from the diners. You can't really watch him cook which is the purpose of going to a tempura counter. It creates a cold, standoffish feel. - Muzak? High end Japanese restaurants do not play music to focus the diner's attention on the food and chef. Now, the food. Good not great. Lacks seasonality and locally sourced ingredients. Sashimi unevenly cut (one piece a slice, the other a cube of poke), fish scale in the chazuke and a piece of cartilage in the snow crab. Use of MSG. Over cooked Okinawa sweet potato tempura. Overcooked shrimp because of all the time fussing over having it stand properly before being presented to the diner. That said, the fry on the enoki mushrooms, stellar. Ethereally crisp on the outside, retaining texture and moisture on the inside. Equally good, the kakiage. Hiragai, a pen shell the length of your forearm, is cut and sat on a bed of sweet onions before being fried. The sweet crisp onions adds to the sweet, springy pieces of hiragai. Perfect cook despite two different ingredients. Smart use of intermezzo throughout to make up for the lack of alcohol (which would do a better job at keeping the oil from overpowering the meal). Finally, a highlight of the meal, the chazuke. The very gentle dashi broth that gently cooked the sesame marinated snapper a perfect end. Do add the wasabi for the perfect flavor. Service is a work in progress. Japanese. Attentive. Not polished yet. Parking in lot behind the building. Online reservations only. They do not answer their phone. Reservations required. BYOB. So, would I go again? Maybe after the restaurant has time to work out the kinks and obtain their much needed liquor license. A three star experience ATM, but four stars for its potential.

I met this cute Japanese girl in my yoga class and finally worked up the courage to ask her out. I took her to Ichika, and I'm so glad I did. Ichika offers an exceptional tempura dining experience with its impeccably light and crispy batter, perfectly cooked seafood, and incredibly fresh vegetables. You won't find anything this good anywhere else in town. It's the real deal. My Japanese date couldn't stop raving about the place. The presentation was soooo elegant, and the flavors were expertly balanced. The cozy ambiance of this smallish restaurant is amazing and adds to the overall dining pleasure. If you like tempura (and honestly, who doesn't?) you'll love this place. I'm already dying to go back.

The gorgeous interior of Ichika

Came here with my girlfriends during soft opening as they love tempura. So yum! I must say we all enjoyed the food immensely and all agreed the tempura was on a whole different level...very delicate and refined. Lightly batter, not oily, great quality ingredients. My favorites were the scallops, uni and crab, and shrimp, but honestly, every piece was so yummy! The tsuyu is made fresh daily so it didn't over power the natural freshness of each piece. On the side there were also salt and seaweed salt if you prefer. We were served around 17 courses for the omakase ($160/head). It's no wonder Chef Chikano earned a Michelin-star for his tempura. Definitely a must try! Love it here! Aside from the food, I also love the charm of the restaurant, intimate and warm. The staff greeted us very warmly and introduced each dish...overall it was an amazing experience!

2024 Kentucky Derby results, winner: Mystik Dan takes 150th Run for the Roses by a nose in epic photo finish

Mystik Dan has won the 150th Kentucky Derby in a photo finish. Mystik Dan just barely beat out Sierra Leone and Forever Young by a nose in a photo finish as all three reached the finish line.

This is now the 26th time that the Kentucky Derby has been decided by the length of a neck or less, and Mystik Dan reached the winner's circle in one of the most thrilling finishes in recent memory at Churchill Downs. 

Mystik Dan took the lead down the backstretch and it looked like no horse would be able to catch him, but that's when both Sierra Leone and Forever Young made their move. As Mystik Dan began to slow a bit nearing the finish line, the two horses -- seemingly pinned to one another -- made the hard sprint to the finish line and nearly stole the victory away.

Trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. also won the Kentucky Oaks on Friday at Churchill Downs, making them just the second tandem to accomplish the feat.

In the immediate aftermath of the race, McPeek gave all the credit to Hernandez. McPeek said Hernandez has flown under the radar for a while, but those days are gone now.

"Brian just did an amazing job," McPeek told NBC in a on-track interview. "Just a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant jockey and ride. I mean, the draw helped us from the beginning. We talked about that. ... Brian is amazing. Probably one of the most underrated riders in racing, but not anymore."

Because of the razor-thin margin of victory, everyone had to wait several minutes for an official winner to be declared. Hernandez described that anticipation as "the longest few minutes I've ever felt in my life." Hernandez also said winning the Kentucky Derby fulfills a childhood dream for him.

"This is a lifetime achievement," Hernandez said. "This goes to our whole family. We've worked all our lives for this. It's hard to describe what kind of feeling this is. I told myself I was never going to step into the Derby winner's circle until I could do it on the back of a horse. To be able to live that dream from when I was a six-year-old kid riding my bike around my grandparents' farm telling them I was going to win the Kentucky Derby one day. Here we are."

Race favorite Fierceness started out strong, running with the leaders early. But down the stretch, he faded quickly to back and finished a disappointing 15th.

C'est désormais officiel. Kylian Mbappé ne sera plus un joueur du PSG la saison prochaine , et il ne fait plus aucun doute qu'il va rejoindre le Real Madrid. Reste à savoir quand le club merengue annoncera la signature de l'attaquant français .

Selon AS , l'officialisation par le Real se fera entre la finale de la Ligue des champions (1er juin) et le début de l'Euro (14 juin). Marca évoque la semaine du 3 au 9 juin la plus propice pour cette communication.

Pour ce qui est de la présentation publique du joueur à Santiago-Bernabéu, la chose est plus compliquée, car l'international français est sous contrat avec le PSG jusqu'au 30 juin. Et l'Euro pourrait se terminer le 14 juillet pour l'équipe de France, repoussant encore un peu plus la première apparition de la star à Bernabeu.

Un grand rendez-vous mi-juillet?

C'est à la fin de l'Euro que le moment semble le plus propice pour la présentation de Kylian Mbappé au Real Madrid. Le 29 juillet, l'équipe espagnole s'envolera pour les Etats-Unis pour sa traditionnelle tournée amicale en préparation de la nouvelle saison. La fenêtre de tir, selon AS, devrait donc être lors de la deuxième quinzaine de juillet. En revanche, quatre jours sont déjà pris. En effet, le Santiago-Bernabeu sera réservé à la chanteuse colombienne Karol G les 20, 21, 22 et 23 juillet prochains.

WASHINGTON (TND) — Nearly 68 million Americans monthly are expected to receive a Social Security benefit, amounting to about $1.5 trillion in benefits paid during the year. The latest annual report from the Social Security Board of Trustees indicates that Social Security continues to grapple with "significant financing issues," and is on course to be insolvent by 2035.

Since 2010, Social Security has been operating at a deficit, spending more money than it brings in. This trend has exacerbated the strain on the program's financial reserves.

If Social Security were to run out of funds by 2035, beneficiaries could face cuts to their benefits. The prediction for insolvency is a year later than the report’s forecast last year. According to the agency’s estimates, individuals could experience a 17% reduction in their current benefits. While this scenario would undoubtedly have a profound impact on millions of Americans, it represents a slight improvement from previous projections, which suggested a 23% cut in benefits.

The roots of Social Security's financial instability trace back to 2010 when the program began operating at a deficit for the first time since 1983 , spending more than it earns. This trend has been exacerbated by the aging population and the retirements of the baby boomer generation. A fact sheet from the Social Security Administration reports in 1940, the life expectancy of a 65-year-old was almost 14 years, but today it is over 20 years. The fact sheet also reports the number of Americans aged 65 and older is expected to surge from about 58 million in 2022 to about 75 million by 2035.

To avert this looming crisis, action from Congress is essential. Tough reforms, such as potential increases in taxes or cuts to benefits, are being considered to shore up Social Security's finances and ensure its long-term sustainability. Republicans have also proposed raising the retirement age to 67.

These measures are reminiscent of the last major Social Security reforms that were enacted under President Ronald Reagan in 1983 when Social Security insolvency was just months away . Under those amendments , Congress raised the retirement age, delayed cost-of-living adjustments to benefits, extended coverage to new federal employees and nonprofit employees, and increased taxes to stave off insolvency.
