General Programme Information

The Faculty offers a PhD programme by research in languages and linguistics.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) is University of Malaya’s premier research training degree. The pinnacle of academic achievement at University of Malaya, the Ph.D is awarded based on the foundation of the thesis prepared under supervision, resulting in an original and significant contribution, displaying extensive knowledge and comprehension of the subject and field of study.

Evaluated by independent experts using current and internationally accepted standards, the University’s Ph.D programme produces human capital, which is not only intellectual and skilful in modern technology but also very versatile and able to handle problems in real life situations. Ph.D. students will carry out focused research in their area of specialisation, which is of immediate relevance to local interest. Additionally, they will be alert to the challenges faced in the international arena through the media, seminars, conferences and keynote addresses, and also through research attachments and collaborative exchange arrangements with internationally recognised research centres.

The Ph.D programme is more than just an academic distinction. The programme is designed to ensure the fields of study remain relevant to the needs of today. At the same time, the candidates in pursuit of their Ph.D degrees foresee the changes of societal and industry standards, trends and behavioural patterns; the very same qualities that make them brilliant and effective leaders.

Language Requirement

A non-Malaysian applicant who wishes to follow a programme and/or write their dissertation in the English Language but whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English Language must possess:

• A minimum score of 550 for a paper-based total, a score of 213 for a computer-based total, or a score of 80 for an internet-based total for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
• At least a band 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)(ACADEMIC); or
• A score of 50 and above for the Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE)

A non-Malaysian applicant pursuing a programme of study and/or writing a dissertation in a language other than English Language, that is, Bahasa Malaysia and Arabic, which is related to his/her field of research prior to graduation is required to obtain:

• A minimum score of 400 for a paper-based total for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
• At least a band of 4.0 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)(ACADEMIC)

Can You Get a PhD without a Masters?

Yes, it’s possible to get a PhD without first having a Masters degree.

The conventional route for someone who earns a PhD is to pursue a Bachelor’s degree, followed by a Masters degree and then a PhD. However, several students opt to bypass a Master’s degree by enrolling onto a doctoral programme as soon as they complete their undergraduate degree.

Before we discuss how this can be done, it is worth mentioning the advantages and disadvantages of this route.

Advantages of Applying to a PhD without A Masters

The motivations for undertaking a PhD immediately after an undergraduate course are largely in saving money and time. This is because you will essentially eliminate a year of study. Another advantage of immediately enrolling onto a doctorate degree is project availability. If you find a project that you’re really interested in, it’s unlikely that it will still be available in a years’ time. Therefore, bypassing a Masters and enrolling directly into a PhD will increase your chances of securing the research project before it becomes unavailable.

Disadvantages of Applying to a PhD without A Masters

Although a Masters degree will add a year onto your academic journey, it can be incredibility helpful for your development and can help prepare you for a doctoral degree.

Not having a Master’s degree may prove to be a hindrance during your application process. This is because many other students will also apply to the same research projects, and it’s likely that the majority will hold a Masters. This will put you at a disadvantage to them.

Besides this, the dissertation project you’ll be required to undertake on a Master’s programme will provide you with a taste of what it is like to work on a research-based project. In addition to this, it’s likely that you’ll be able to select your own dissertation topic. As such, you can explore a specific field you’re interested in in further detail. This is a great way to confirm that both research-based work and the specific field you’re interested in are right for you before committing the next few years to it via a PhD.

Another advantage to the dissertation project associated with a Masters degree is the opportunity it provides you with to work closely with a project supervisor. This will help you understand the PhD student-supervisor relationship and communication frequency that works best for you. You can then use this knowledge to find supervisors who would compliment you when it comes time to find a PhD project to apply to. PhD without a Masters – How Does It Work?

To be considered for a PhD without a Master’s, at a minimum you will be expected to have a Bachelors degree. For students looking to enrol onto a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) PhD, a relevant Bachelors in a 3-year undergraduate course is usually expected. However, this is not the case for students looking to apply to non-STEM PhDs. Rather, students looking to apply to doctorates in subjects such as those surrounding Arts and Humanities are usually expected to have a relevant Bachelors from a 4-year course.

In addition to this, you will need to have demonstrated strong academic performance during your undergraduate course. This means that your Bachelors will need to be at least a UK Upper Second-Class Honours (2.1) for nearly all institutions to consider you.

Should you be accepted into a PhD programme without a Masters, the usual process will be to first register you as an MPhil student. You will then have a year to prepare and submit a thesis. Your thesis will need to detail the research you have carried out within that year and outline how you intend to continue it into a full PhD study. There are three outcomes of this MPhil thesis review:

• Failure and you’re not awarded anything.
• You pass, however, the supervisor doesn’t believe you’ve demonstrated strong research skills. You’re awarded an MPhil but they do not upgrade your course to a PhD programme.
• You pass and the supervisor believes you have proven yourself as a capable researcher. Your course is upgraded to a PhD as opposed to you being awarding an MPhil.

Integrated PhD

Some universities offer Integrated PhD degree programmes (also known as an Integrated Masters degree). These are four-year programmes comprising of a one-year Masters degree immediately followed by a three-year PhD degree. These can prove a great option for graduate students who are looking to undertake a PhD without a Masters but are struggling to meet the eligibility requirements. PhD without a Bachelors – Is It Possible?

Yes, it is possible to get a PhD without a Bachelor’s, however, this is extremely uncommon.

When this occurs, it is almost always reserved for very mature individuals. For example, an individual may not be in active academia but still may have significantly contributed to their field. This contribution could be through the work they have undertaken as part of their career, or as part of a long-term study project, they have undertaken out of self-interest.

In either case, the individual would need to prove that they have extensive experience in their field and have directly contributed to new knowledge within it. The key factor here is that their work has pushed the boundaries of existing knowledge. It is not enough for an individual to be regarded as an expert in their field – they must have contributed something new and meaningful. It’s common for individuals awarded a PhD through this means to have produced several publications within their lifetime. It’s also common for the individual to have gained several professional accreditations within their field before even being considered suitable for a PhD research degree.

Universities Offering PhD without a Masters

Unfortunately, there is not a centralised list of universities which offer PhDs without a Master’s degree. The reason for this is that the edibility requirements differ from PhD to PhD and from department to department.

Therefore, you will need to check the guidelines for each individual university and the requirements for each specific PhD you’re interested in.

Should you find a PhD programme you can apply to with a Bachelors, make every effort to make your application as strong as possible. This is because you will be competing against other candidates, most of who will have a Master’s degree.

Not only can you strengthen your application by having a Bachelors with a First-Class Honours (1st), but you can also do so by showing the traits of a successful researcher. This includes showing a genuine interest in the project, a high work ethic, and exceptional communication skills.

Additionally, a strong letter of recommendation from a respected university lecturer will prove very beneficial. This is especially true if the lecturer supervisors his or her own PhD students. This is because the lecturer will understand the skills required for an adept research student.

The multifaceted challenges facing 21st-century education require researchers who can collect and analyse information from a number of academic disciplines — history, psychology, engineering, education, science, and more — and translate these findings into transformative ideas for education policy reform and practice.

The PhD in Education at OUM is an interdisciplinary doctoral program designed to meet the needs of educators in various positions. The requirements for the PhD programme include completing coursework for two modules; Educational Research Methodology and Doctoral Seminar. Both these modules focus on developing knowledge and expertise in conducting high quality research using quantitative and qualitative methods. Candidates are also required to prepare a research proposal for the Proposal Defence, where both oral and written work will be assessed.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will enjoy unrestricted access to OUM Digital Library where we have a collection of close to 100,000 e-books and an extensive collection of academic journals.

Our core mission in the PhD programme is to produce scholars who can and will use research to contribute to understanding and improving education. What level is postgraduate study?

Postgraduate studies in Malaysia

Requirements

Each Malaysian institution has a system that allows prospective students to apply for and enrol in their postgraduate programs. So, once you’ve decided on an institution, you may fill out their application and send your materials there.

Nonetheless, here are some of the general criteria you have to meet for each application:

Academic Requirement: Completion in a Master’s Degree or equivalent in a related field.

English Requirement: Band 5 in MUET or Band 6.0 in IELTS; or a min score of 60 (IBT) or 488 (PBT) in TOEFL; or score 59 and above for Pearson English Test.

The program structure for postgraduate programs is different compared to a degree course.

Here, students will systematically arrange and develop their study by creating a research proposal that will lead them through the complete research process.

The  UOW Malaysia KDU Graduate Research  fellowship is available to qualified individuals enrolled in UOW Malaysia KDU postgraduate research programs.

Here are the requirements you have to meet to be eligible for this scholarship:

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 3.00.

All current academic and language requirements must be met.

You must be enrolled as a full-time postgraduate (by research) student at UOW Malaysia KDU.

The applicant must be recommended by the school supervising and evaluating the candidate’s postgraduate studies.

UUM postgraduate programmes are offered by three graduate schools namely; the Awang Had Salleh Graduate School of Arts & Sciences(AHSGS),  Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB), Ghazali Shafie Graduate School of Government (GSGSG) and the Postgraduate Studies Unit, UUM College of Business (COB). • a bachelor’s degree from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of 2.00 to 2.74 and relevant work experience; or
• a diploma from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with at least ten (10) years of relevant work experience,  35 years or older and passed APEL assessment (level 7); or
• any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; and
• fulfil the English language requirement as set by the University Senate.  

MASTER PROGRAMME (BY RESEARCH)

Applicants for master’s programme by research must possess:

•  any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; and
•  fulfil the English language requirement as set by the University Senate.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

All International postgraduate students should meet any one of the following English Language requirements set by the University before they are accepted for admission. 

For direct admission, International Postgraduate Students must have obtained one of the following: 

• TOEFL Score of 550 and above in the Paper Based Test
• IELTS of Band 6.0 and above
• MUET of Band 4.0 and above
• Cambridge English Advanced Test score of 169 and above
• Pearson Test of English Academic score of 50 and above

Exemption for meeting the above English Language requirement are given to candidates with any of the following qualifications: 

• Obtain a degree from any institutions with English language Education System
• Obtain a degree from any Public University in Malaysia with English as a language of instruction
• Obtain a degree from any Private University or College University in Malaysia that are listed in Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR)

Students who do not meet any of the above English language requirement will not be allowed to register for courses or continue with their programme of study. They may attend the  Intensive Language Course for International Students  that will prepare and assist them for their MUET examination.

Intensive English Language Course for International Students

• The Intensive English Language Course for International Students is a course designed especially for international candidates who have not demonstrated an acceptable level of English language proficiency upon entrance into the University.
• Students who do not fulfil the English Language requirement within the duration of the validity of their student visa, which is for one (1) year will cause the offer to be withdrawn and be terminated from the university.

Master’s and PhD: What’s the Difference?

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably recently graduated, to which we say, congratulations! Now you’re browsing through postgraduate programmes like Masters and PhD and you’re unsure of what to choose — say no more! Here is a complete guide to navigating through the difference between a PhD and a Master’s degree.

1. What Is a Master’s Degree?

A Master’s degree is typically a more detailed extension of the undergraduate journey if you’re looking to refurbish your professional skills for a career and aren’t committed to working just yet. It can come in different modes — coursework, fully research, or mixed. A master’s degree is a great stepping stone that will open doors to a multitude of careers (as well as getting a better starting salary too!) and the best part is that it can be completed within 1-2 years. 

2. What Is a PhD?

A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is a research degree that is designed for students who are interested in discovering new knowledge based on scientific research and/or gaining teaching experience. This postgraduate degree falls under the doctorate category. Neither PhDs nor doctorates are “better” than the other. 

Now that we know what a master’s degree and a PhD is… what’s the difference? They’re both postgraduate degrees, so which one should you enrol for? 

3. Master’s vs PhD — Difference in Admission Process

The first difference between a master’s and a PhD is the admission process — a master’s is somewhat similar to that of an undergraduate programme; you would need to meet the requirements of the course and prepare the required documents before submitting the application. It is important to note that there are not many financial aids available for a master’s programme, though this can vary from one institution to another. As for a PhD, it is unsurprising that it is not as easy as getting into a master’s programme. Naturally, as the highest level of tertiary education, it is more competitive to get into. Oftentimes, you may have to present a proposal or possess a master’s degree first before getting accepted. Be sure to look into the requirements carefully!

4. Master’s vs PhD — Difference in Degree Requirements

The next difference between a master’s and a PhD degree programme is the pre-requisites and study eligibility. While certain PhDs may not require a master’s degree in the respective field beforehand, a master’s degree absolutely requires the completion of a bachelor’s degree. You don’t actually need to get into Dean’s list to apply for both master’s and PhD programmes, but there is typically a baseline as low as 3.0 CGPA. A PhD, however, requires relevant research experience, which can also include working experience in a related field. Applicants that don’t do a master’s first can try a fast-track route in Malaysia if they graduate with first-class honours in their undergraduate degree. It is also important to note that there may be some PhD programmes that need specific exams to study for, like the GRE and GMAT, particularly if you’re transitioning from a different field of discipline. 

5. Master’s vs PhD — Difference in Careers and Employment

As mentioned previously, a PhD focuses on specialisation and so this would instantly have you recognised as a kind of expert in your field, as you would have spent a more comprehensive amount of time compared to a master’s degree. Nonetheless, having a master’s degree will put a good foot forward for you in the working world, as you would have finished earlier and can obtain in advance the relevant experience. Let’s not forget that when you are working with like-minded individuals from all walks of life in a master’s programme , you are entering a great opportunity to network, compared to the solidarity that comes from being a PhD student. If you’re someone who loves research, however, and would like to enter academia, a PhD is undoubtedly a boon to your career in the relevant discipline.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The postgraduate program at IKMAS emphasizes research within the social sciences with focus on various disciplines especially economics, sociology, political science, law and culture. The program is research-driven within the framework of inter-regionalism, connectivity and inclusive development. 

Doctoral candidates at IKMAS embark on a rigorous journey, one that is multidisciplinary in nature and leading them to a deep understanding of historical and contemporary transformations, bearing in mind the interests of Malaysian society. The various dimensions of globalisation and occidentalism are essential to the multiple processes of social inequalities, for example economic differentiation and competition, as well as processes that impact class, ethic, gender, politics and identity.

The mandatory courses – Research Methodology and two courses on Globalisation and Occidentalism – equip our doctoral candidates with fundamental theories, conceptual frameworks, and research skills relevant to their chosen disciplines. 

LIFE AT THE FACULTY

IKMAS is located at the heart of the university’s main campus about 35 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. A wide range of facilities are available on the campus grounds for both academic and extracurricular activities. IKMAS graduates also benefit from the institute’s active networking with international and local bodies that leads to the organization of multiple events and programs every year. The graduates’ involvement in the four levels of IKMAS Postgraduate Seminar during the duration of their study provides them the platform to present their research work, engage with peers and research fellows for intellectual interactions and discourse. Academic counsel from the esteemed members of institute’s International Advisory Board, Adjunct Professors and Distinguished International Professors is an added bonus.

Programme Requirement

A person who wishes to apply for admission to the Doctorate programme shall possess the following qualification:

• Master’s Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or have accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or an institution with accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
• other qualifications equivalent to a masters degree or other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or
• a student currently pursuing full time master’s programme under sub regulation 6 (a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty’s/ Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/ Director; or
• Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/ Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or with accreditation recognised by a foreign Accreditation Board
• any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or
• fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable); and
• fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:

a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:

a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

• Intake for coursework and mixed mode are open twice a year, which is every October until November (for the next February intake) and every April until May (for the September intake).
• Application for research mode programmes can be made any time throughout the year.
• The duration for Masters programme requires 2 to 4 semester of study on fulltime basis and 4 to 8 semesters on a parttime basis and for Doctor of Philosophy programme is 6 to 12 semesters on fulltime basis and 8 to 14 semesters on a part-time basis.

Hiring Graduate Students

We offer two entry pathways for this PhD programme: normal mode and PhD by Prior Publication mode. Our PhD by Prior Publication mode provides a unique pathway for you to achieve a Doctoral award based on your existing body of work. We recognise the value of your prior publications and include them as a significant part of your submission for the Doctoral award.

Normal Mode

• A Bachelor's Degree (Level 6, MQF) in Law or Shariah and a Master's Degree (Level 7, MQF) OR
• Any equivalents that are accepted by Higher Education Provider (HEP) senate

International Students

English Requirement: IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 60 (Internet Based Test) (May join IEN preparatory course and achieve the IELTS score). The validity of the IELTS or equivalent is within 2 years from the date of the examination.

Prior Publication Mode

You will need to fulfil one of the below:

• Obtain a master's degree in the field or related fields accepted by the HEP Senate
• Obtain other qualifications equivalent to a master's degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia
• Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the HEP

In addition to the above criteria, those who want to join Doctoral Degree by Retrospective or Prior Publication mode must include the below to the formal application:

• Minimum of 5 publications or equivalent works in alignment with the theme of the specialisation
• An executive summary of the above publications to demonstrate the applicant’s contribution to knowledge in the field
• A list of scholarly published work

The minimum language proficiency of the candidates must be determined by the HEP consistent with applicable programme standards or based on the needs of the programme, i.e., learning outcomes and the medium of instruction.

A Selection Committee must be established to review the formal application for PhD by Retrospective or Prior Publication and recommend to the Senate to obtain approval.

Criteria for published works

• Published work must encompass high-quality journals, monographs, books, research-based chapters in books, electronic publications which have not been used to obtain other awards or deemed a part of those awards.
• The publications must be published within a period not exceeding ten (10) years from the date of submission.
• For the five (5) nominated publications, the candidate must be the principal author with the contributions of others clearly defined.

The minimum requirement for the award of the degree is to:

• Pass thesis examination and viva-voce/ oral examination.
• Confirmation of meeting minimum candidature period (from the first day of intake commencement to confirmation of satisfactory amendment of thesis/dissertation by examiners).

How will progression tracking be done?

Progression tracking is done by monitoring of research progress periodically through:

• Regular consultation with the supervisors (supervisor-supervisee log);
• Progress report; and Seminars (research seminar, thesis completion seminar).

We shall propose academic staff with interests and expertise in your subject area, and for you to work with them to develop your proposal into an original research project that will move your field forwards. Once a supervisor and suitable research topic have been identified, we will encourage you to submit an application for admission to the PhD programme.

Our school will select and propose qualified academic staff members who possess expertise in your subject area. You will have the opportunity to work with them to refine your proposal and develop it into a novel research project that will make significant contributions to your field. Once you have identified a suitable research topic and supervisor, we will guide and support you in the process of submitting an application for admission to our esteemed PhD programme. 

The minimum requirement for entry to UoRM’s PhD programme is a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Malaysian Government, or other qualification that the University accepts.

Applicants must also possess a minimum upper second-class or international equivalent, or in exceptional circumstances, such as where a student has accrued significant relevant experience, a good 2.2 (lower second-class honours) degree.

English Language Requirement

Applicants whose first language is not English will normally be required to provide evidence of their ability in academic English. The normal entry requirement for research degrees is a score of 7 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test or an equivalent test accepted by the University. Exceptions to such a requirement may arise where the candidate has recently (last two years) studied for another degree or worked in a country where English is the native language.

Originals of English Language certificates will be required except where there are online verification facilities (e.g. IELTS & TOEFL). English Language certificates will not be accepted if they are more than two years old.

PhD programmes have an expected duration of 3 years for full-time students, with a maximum time of 4 years allowed for submission of the thesis.

Postgraduate research forms a major part of IMU’s activities in its role as a leader in healthcare provision and innovation. The University allocates more than RM1 million internal funds for research every year. Alongside this commitment, our researchers have also successfully obtained significant amounts of external grants from funding bodies such as the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and Ministry of Energy,

Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC) in recent years. Our researchers have received funding for collaborative research projects in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, breast cancer, infectious diseases and environmental health.

Research Funding

Our researchers have successfully obtained external funding through government grants such as the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), Exploratory Research Grant Scheme (ERGS) and ScienceFund.

In addition, internal grants worth more than RM1,000,000 per year are invested to support research at IMU.

Research Facilities

The IMU has good infrastructure and facilities to support research. There are eight Research Laboratories and eight tissue culture laboratories for medical research with a total floor space of 26,000 sq ft. The University also has an animal storage facility with expanded space (about 770 sq ft) and state-of-the-art caging and maintenance of experimental animals. Adequate funding support for research facilities is provided.

Research Partnerships

Students will benefit from the University’s research collaborations with various local and foreign institutions in areas such as cancer, bioactive molecules, nutrition and environmental health. Close links have also been established with local hospitals, especially Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar in clinical research.

The selection of supervisor(s) will depend very much on the research area and be based on mutual agreement between both parties. The principal supervisor must be engaged within IMU whereas a co-supervisor can be from any established institution. All supervisors are subject to the credentialling guidelines of IMU.

Both programmes are research-based and degrees will be awarded by IMU on successful completion of a thesis. Examination is by assessment of the thesis, and includes an oral examination of the contained research.

For PhD , there is also provision for candidates to submit their theses in the form of published works resulting from their research projects during period of their candidature, subject to the evaluation by the Review Committee.

The state-of-the-art scientific knowledge and laboratory skills that I had leant at IMU during my undergraduate studies had allowed me to secure a research intern position in Singapore. When I wanted to pursue my postgraduate studies, I chose IMU without any hesitation. Throughout my postgraduate studies at IMU, I have been fortunate enough to be guided by a group of experienced and knowledgeable supervisors. My supervisors have played a significant role in shaping me into a well-trained research student. The diverse backgrounds of my fellow research students during postgraduate studies has allowed us to share our opinions and ideas during our research talks. My presentation skills have improved tremendously as a result of this. Also, I am now more knowledgeable regarding other areas of the scientific world. I believe that all the valuable knowledges and experiences that I have gained from my postgraduate studies are significant in turning me into a more mature, competitive and knowledgeable research scientist of the future.

I completed both my Pre-U and undergraduate programmes at IMU and now I continue my postgraduate study, MSc in Medical and Health Science also at IMU. At first, I choose IMU as my first choice based on recommendation, because my siblings and cousins all graduated from IMU. Moreover, the superior geographical location of IMU is another important reason; the convenient accessibility of public transportation and safe surroundings. The study environment and the facilities in IMU draw up my affection once I started my study life. However, the course structure and the qualification of lecturers is the main reason the university programmes attracted me when IMU was recommended to me. The passionate and supportive lecturers are the fundamental grounds that make me wish to complete my postgraduate study in IMU. I visited few other universities before I made my final decision, but none of them having the facilities and exceptional management for the postgraduate research laboratory. The strong connection within the postgraduate students, lecturers and the postgraduate school reinforced my decision to continue my postgraduate study in IMU.

I have been supervising more than 10 MSc and PhD (by research) in Medical and Health Sciences candidates as principal supervisor in IMU since 2010. The postgraduate students that I have been supervising are not only receiving training on specialist knowledge in producing biomaterials for drug delivery and biomedical applications, but they are also acquiring viable transferable skills such as project management, critical thinking, analytical ability, time management, leadership, and teamwork, for their future career undertaking. The postgraduate students in IMU are giving comprehensive training on proposal writing, proposal defence, literature review, scientific writing, as well as oral presentation. All the postgraduate by research candidates are presenting research talks in IMU and they are highly encouraged to present at local and international conferences. I am pleased to see all my postgraduate students took the opportunities to present at conferences and some of them received best oral and poster presentation awards at the conferences. The postgraduate by research students in IMU are also publishing their research findings in peer-reviewed journals and all my postgraduate students have been publishing their research hard works in reputable journals. Our research team, including the postgraduate by research students have also successfully jointly filed two patents with Malaysian Palm Oil Board in Malaysia and regional countries. The postgraduate (by research) graduates from my research team are venturing into R&D, quality assurance, preclinical analysis, and education industries.

Minimum Entry Requirement

• A bachelor’s degree with minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent, as accepted by the HEP Senate; or
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent with minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting CGPA of 2.75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment; or
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent not meeting CGPA of 2.50, can be accepted subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in relevant field.
• A masters degree accepted by the HEP Senate; or
• Other qualifications equivalent to a masters degree that are accepted by the HEP Senate.Note: i. There shall be no direct entry from bachelor’s degree level to a doctoral degree level. ii. Candidates registered for Master’s Degree programmes with at least CGPA 3.67 at bachelor’s degree level may apply to convert their candidancy to the doctoral degree programmes subjected to: a) having shown competency and capability in conducting research at Doctoral Degree level. b) approval by the HEP Senate.

English Language Requirements

All students are normally required to provide written evidence of their ability in the English Language in order to study in IMU. The standard English Proficiency requirements are usually overall band score of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 550 (PBT) or 79 (IBT) or MUET band 4.

How students can graduate college without debt | College Connection

Just as gaining acceptance to a great college requires advance planning, so too does paying for it. Students are awarded a college degree upon earning a set number of credits – typically reached by taking four or five courses a semester for four years.

One strategy to minimize the cost of college is to enter with credits. This is frequently attained by taking Advance Placement (AP) courses while in high school. These courses offer an end-of-year exam, graded on a scale of 1 to 5. Most colleges will award college credit for each exam in which a student scored a 5 or 4 – and sometimes even a 3. Students who successfully complete eight AP courses during their high school years can often start their college years as sophomores – reducing costs by 25%.

To lower the cost of attendance, students can apply to colleges one tier below the level to which they would likely be accepted. When applicants present GPA and SAT scores higher than the average, colleges often offer impressive scholarship awards.

Students should consider attending a state school that is within commuting distance of home. New Jersey has more than a dozen four-year colleges and universities throughout the state, ranging from Ramapo College and Montclair State in the north, to Rutgers (Newark and New Brunswick), New Jersey Institute of Technology, and The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in Central Jersey, to Rowan, Rutgers-Camden, and Stockton in the south. At the majority of these state schools that offer on campus housing, the cost for room and board (typically about $15,000) nearly equals the cost of tuition (averaging about $17,000). By commuting from home, students can greatly reduce their expenses without impacting the quality of their education.

Students should apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible. A great place to start is with a guidance counselor who will have applications for all local scholarships. Then, students should reach out to organizations with which they are affiliated: 4-H, Scouts, religious organizations, etc. Finally, students should search for national scholarships on the “Scholly” app and websites such as Discover.com which offers an online scholarship search database with four million scholarships that are collectively worth over $22 billion.

To cover any remaining costs, and to aid with living expenses, students should seek a part-time job with a company that offers tuition reimbursement to student employees. Both McDonald’s and Chipotle offer $5,250 per year and have locations throughout the state.

To qualify for federal need-based aid, students should remind their parents to file a FAFSA during their senior year of high school, as well as a CSS Profile if required by any of the colleges to which they are applying.

Utilizing these tools will help students avoid joining the ranks of 44 million borrowers who collectively owe $1.75 trillion in education debt!
