Postgraduate research scholarships
Professional courses in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, podiatric medicine and social work are offered at postgraduate level. In addition to professional courses, we offer postgraduate coursework and research courses and training in a variety of disciplines.
UWA offers more than 150 postgraduate scholarships each year to domestic and international students to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Master of Philosophy (MPhil). PhDs and MPhils are programs of independent, supervised research assessed on the basis of a thesis and can be taken in any discipline for which appropriate supervision and resourcing are available.
The eligibility criteria and application process is the same for both degrees, with the PhD typically taking four years and the MPhil taking two years. The MPhil is a master’s by research degree.
International scholarships provide tuition fees, living allowances and in some cases, the Overseas Student Health Cover, while the domestic scholarships provide living allowances, as the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) already provides Fee Offset Scholarships to students successful in obtaining an offer to commence a PhD or an MPhil.
The Graduate Research School has rounds of international and domestic scholarship applications each year. Check the website for opening dates and application procedures, including access to the online application form.
Finding a supervisor
Supervisors advise, guide and provide constructive feedback in choosing a topic, designing a project, conducting the research, interpreting the findings and writing the dissertation.
Most postgraduate research students are supervised by two or more members of staff.
External supervisors are welcome additions. Generally, allocation of supervisors is a matter for individual negotiation between student and supervisor, and students are free to choose.
Make your choice with great care, as the effectiveness of the student/supervisor relationship has a major effect on your experience.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Management
How to apply.
If you are interested in pursuing a PhD with the School of Management & Governance (UNSW Business), then you will need to receive an Invitation to Apply from the school’s Postgraduate Research Coordinator (PGRC) in charge of Admissions, who can be reached at [email protected].
To receive an Invitation to Apply, you should 1) self-assess your eligibility, and 2) then submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) . Details of what to include in your EOI can be found here .
The School of Management & Governance will review the EOI and, if the application is sufficiently strong to pass the preliminary screening, issue an Invitation to Apply, with which the interested candidate can then proceed to formally apply through the UNSW Apply Online portal. Detailed instructions about the formal application will be provided in the “Invitation to Apply” email.
Higher Degree Research students in our school normally commence their study in Term 1 (around the beginning of February) each year. Interested candidates should submit EOI between May and mid-August to be considered for admission in the next year. Out of round EOIs submitted after the deadline could be considered only for interested candidates with substantial prior research experience, e.g., with a master by research degree from a leading global institution.
About our Higher Degree Research Programs
Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD)
UNSW’s Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Management & Governance (Program code 1605) will prepare you to become a globally focused and socially engaged research leader. You’ll be joining a cohort of high-achieving research students in tackling modern-day challenges at the forefront of Management & Governance, working alongside leaders in the field (ranked 42 nd in the world, QS Subject Rankings , 2023). This is your opportunity to become integrated into the UNSW Business School’s community of scholars.
You’ll first undertake rigorous coursework covering relevant theories and research methods. As part of the program, you’ll also be involved in research projects from an early stage. This training will equip you with the skills required to identify, analyse, and solve problems in the field.
You’ll then pursue independent research under the supervision of high-profile UNSW academics, culminating in a doctoral thesis. Your PhD thesis will showcase your research skills and enable you to make an original contribution to the field of Management & Governance.
There will also be exciting opportunities throughout to interact with industry leaders, and to develop your teaching portfolio. The training is geared toward preparing you for a career in academia, although other career paths (e.g., consulting, government, industry, non-profit) are also enabled.
The vast majority of our Higher Degree Research (HDR) students are supported through a tuition waiver and stipend of around A$37-47K per year.
If you are admitted for Direct Entry into a PhD, then the minimum time commitment is 35-40 hours per week for 3-4 years (full time).
Linked Master of Pre-Doctoral Business Studies (MPDBS) + PhD
Although a few students may be invited to apply for Direct Entry into our PhD program, most applicants are invited to first complete our Master of Pre-Doctoral Business Studies (MPDBS).
The MPDBS is a one-year pathway for students wanting to undertake a PhD in the UNSW Business School. The MPDBS is a fully funded program, which includes a tuition waiver and stipend (of ~A$37K) for all accepted applicants. This degree involves one year of advanced coursework along with research assistantships. Upon completion of the MPDBS, the vast majority of students have historically gone on to our PhD with a scholarship covering tuition and a stipend (~ A$47K).
The MPDBS gives students an extra year to develop their research skills and to find a match with appropriate supervisors.
The application processes for both the PhD and the Linked MPDBS + PhD are identical. The first step in this process is to submit an Expression of Interest (see above).
The UNSW Business School ranks 34th worldwide for Business & Management Studies.
An increasing number of PhD graduates find employment in business, government, and the non-profit sector. Nineteen of the largest ASX companies have PhD graduates on their senior executive teams.
Your PhD thesis will set you on the path to a career in a premier research institution, anywhere in the world. Throughout your research degree, you’ll also have many opportunities to develop your teaching portfolio.
Beyond academia, there is also significant demand in the private and public sectors for people with deep knowledge and sound research and analytical skills*.
Whether you’re looking to pursue a career in academia, or take your research skills out to industry, a PhD in Management from UNSW will get you there.

Many of us have found ourselves in a full waiting room to see the GP, looking at a laminated sign about a fee increase taped to the reception desk.
Australia is facing a shortage of doctors, especially GPs. The impacts are felt hardest in rural and regional areas, where patients wait up to 12 weeks for a consultation. These long waits compound rural health inequalities.
Meanwhile, medical students are turning away from general practice. One survey of GPs found 58% reported experiencing burnout since the pandemic. Estimates project by 2031 there will be a shortage of more than 10,000 GPs.
To address this shortage, the government recently announced plans to cut “red tape” to make it easier to recruit doctors from overseas. The number of doctors from overseas working in Australia has doubled since the COVID pandemic hit.
But when a high-income country like Australia recruits doctors from overseas, we risk causing a “brain drain” elsewhere.
Australia isn’t the only country short of doctors
Australia is increasingly recruiting doctors from low- to middle-income countries. But we aren’t the only place facing a doctor shortage. This recruitment risks worsening global health inequities and raises concerns around justice.
A recent estimate suggests Nigeria has 80 oncologists (cancer doctors) for more than 213 million people. Australia has more than 600 oncologists, and we are a much smaller country, with 26 million people . Recruiting even one of these oncologists could benefit Australia, but have a disproportionately negative impact on the Nigerian health system.
If we recruit a doctor from a low- or middle-income country such as India, not only does the Indian health care system lose a doctor, it also loses the money invested in training these doctors. It’s a double blow.
However, higher salaries in Australia can serve as a big draw . It can also be unfair and discriminatory to restrict opportunities for individual doctors who might want to emigrate to Australia, just because they are from a lower-income country.
Ensuring quality of care and fair treatment
If we recruit doctors from overseas, it’s important to ensure they can provide care to Australian standards.
That doesn’t just mean knowing how to diagnose a melanoma or do an ultrasound – it’s also about being familiar with different legislation and guidelines, such as requirements for doctors to refer patients elsewhere if they don’t want to provide an abortion.
Language proficiency is also important – clear communication is critical for patient safety. However, having doctors who speak a language other than English is also a big positive , especially for refugee and migrant communities seeking health care.
We also need to ensure new recruits are treated well. A global review of international medical graduates found doctors from overseas reported being given fewer professional opportunities, as well as experiencing racism and discrimination. We have an ethical obligation to make sure doctors we recruit are treated equally and get the support they need.
How else can we boost doctor numbers?
We need to train more doctors to meet Australia’s future demand for health care. This has already begun, with efforts to open more medical schools in rural and regional areas, including at Charles Darwin University in the Northern Territory.
But it goes beyond just medical school – we need to ensure there isn’t a “ bottleneck ” of medical graduates who can’t get further training.
GPs in Australia earn less than doctors working in other specialties, and Medicare rebates being outpaced by inflation makes it increasingly difficult to bulk-bill.
We can make general practice and working in rural and regional areas more attractive, such as with higher pay or scholarships.
There are also other ways we can increase access to health care. These include telehealth, as well as nurse practitioners, who can play an important role in improving access to health care and addressing health inequities.
However, it’s important not to end up with different levels of care for different communities: people in rural communities should be able to access a doctor when they need one.
Importing doctors from overseas is one way of resolving our urgent shortage of doctors, but has significant ethical implications.
If we do import doctors, especially from other countries with doctor shortages, we should give back to those countries and their health-care systems. This could be by increasing foreign aid, or providing further training for health-care professionals who can then take those skills back to their country of origin.
Australia needs more doctors, and that isn’t going to change any time soon. Although importing doctors from overseas is one solution, it’s not a straightforward fix.
