சுப்ரமணிய பாரதியார்.

சுப்ரமணிய பாரதியார் ஒரு தமிழ் கவிஞர். இந்திய சுதந்திர போராட்ட காலத்தில் கனல் தெறிக்கும் விடுதலைப்போர் கவிதைகள் வாயிலாக மக்களின் மனதில் விடுதலை உணர்வை ஊட்டியவர். இவர் ஒரு கவிஞர் மட்டுமல்லாமல் ஒரு  எழுத்தாளர், பத்திரிக்கையாசிரியர், சமூக சீர்திருத்தவாதி மற்றும் தன்னுடைய பாட்டுகளின் மூலமாக சிந்தனைகளை மக்களிடம் தட்டியெழுப்பியவர். தம் தாய்மொழியாம் தமிழ்மொழி மீது அளவுகடந்த பற்றுக்கொண்ட இவர், “யாமறிந்த மொழிகளிலே தமிழ்மொழிபோல் இனிதாவதெங்கும் காணோம்” என்று போற்றி பாடியுள்ளார். விடுதலைப் போராட்ட காலத்தில், இவருடைய தேசிய உணர்வுள்ள பல்வேறு கவிதைகள் மக்களை ஒருங்கிணைத்த காரணத்தினால் “தேசிய கவியாக” போற்றப்பட்ட மாபெரும் புரட்சி வீரனின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு மற்றும் சாதனைகளை விரிவாகக் காண்போம்.

சுப்ரமணிய பாரதியார் அவர்கள்,  சின்னசாமி ஐயருக்கும், இலட்சுமி அம்மாளுக்கும் மகனாக 1882 ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழ்நாட்டின் திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டத்திலுள்ள எட்டயபுரத்தில் பிறந்தார்.  அவருக்கு பெற்றோர் இட்ட பெயர் சுப்பிரமணியன். அவருடைய 5 வயதில் அவருடைய தாயார் காலமானார். இவர் இளம் வயதிலேயே தமிழில் புலமைப்பெற்றுத் திகழ்ந்தார்.

இளமைப் பருவம்

சிறு வயதிலேயே பாரதியாருக்கு தமிழ் மொழி மீது சிறந்த பற்றும், புலமையும் இருந்தது. ஏழு வயதில் பள்ளியில் படித்துவரும்பொழுது கவிதைகள் எழுதத் தொடங்கினார். தன்னுடைய பதினொரு வயதில் கவிபாடும் ஆற்றலை வெளிப்படுத்தினார், இவருடைய கவிப்புலமையை பாராட்டிய எட்டயபுர மன்னர், இவருக்கு “பாரதி” என்ற பட்டத்தை வழங்கினார். அன்று முதல் இவர் “சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார்” என அழைக்கப்பெற்றார்.    .

பாரதியாரின் திருமண வாழ்க்கை

பாரதியார் அவர்கள், பள்ளியில் படித்துகொண்டிருக்கும் பொழுதே 1897 ஆம் ஆண்டு செல்லம்மா என்பவரைத் திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டார். தனது தந்தையின் இறப்புக்குப் பிறகு பாரதியார் வறுமை நிலையினை அடைந்தார். சிறிது காலம் காசிக்கு சென்று தங்கியிருந்தார். பிறகு எட்டையபுர மன்னரின் அழைப்பை ஏற்று அரசவை கவிஞராக பணியாற்றினார்.

பாரதியாரின் இலக்கிய பணி

‘மீசை கவிஞன்’ என்றும் ‘முண்டாசு கவிஞன்’ என்றும் தமிழ் இலக்கிய உலகம் போற்றும் பாரதியார்,  தாய் மொழியாம் தமிழ் மொழியின் மீது மிகுந்த பற்றுடையவராக திகழ்ந்தார். இவர் சமஸ்கிருதம், வங்காளம், இந்தி, ஆங்கிலம் போன்ற பிறமொழிகளிலும் தனி புலமைப்பெற்று விளங்கினார். 1912 ஆம் ஆண்டு கீதையை தமிழில் மொழிப்பெயர்த்தார். ‘கண்ணன்பாட்டு’, ‘குயில்பாட்டு’, ‘பாஞ்சாலி சபதம்’,’ புதிய ஆத்திச்சூடி’ போன்ற புகழ் பெற்ற காவியங்கள் பாரதியரால் எழுதப் பெற்றன.

விடுதலைப் போராட்டத்தில் பாரதியின் பங்கு

சுதந்திரப் போரில், பாரதியின் பாடல்கள் உணர்ச்சி வெள்ளமாய், காட்டுத்தீயாய், சுதந்திரக் கனலாய் தமிழ்நாட்டை வீருகொள்ளச் செய்தது. பாரதியார் “இந்திய பத்திரிக்கையின்” மூலம் மக்களிடையே விடுதலை உணர்வை தூண்டும் வகையில் பல எழுச்சியூட்டும் கட்டுரைகளை எழுதினார். பாரதியின் எழுச்சிக்கு, தமிழ்நாட்டில் பலத்த ஆதரவு பெருகுவதைக் கண்ட பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆட்சி “இந்தியா பத்திரிக்கைக்கு” தடை விதித்து அவரை கைது செய்து சிறையிலும் அடைத்தது. அதுமட்டுமல்லாமல், விடுதலைப் போராட்டக் காலத்தில் தேசிய உணர்வுள்ள பல்வேறு கவிதைகளைப் படைத்து மக்களை ஒருங்கிணைத்த காரணத்தால், பாரதி “தேசிய கவியாக” அனைவராலும் போற்றப்பட்டார். இவர் சுதேசிமித்திரனில் உதவி ஆசிரியராக, நவம்பர் 1904 முதல் ஆகஸ்ட் 1906 வரை பணியாற்றினார். “ஆடுவோமே பள்ளு பாடுவோமே ஆனந்த சுதந்திரம் அடைந்துவிட்டோம்” என்று சுதந்திரம் அடைவதற்கு முன்பே தன்னுடைய சுதந்திர தாகத்தை தன் பாட்டின் மூலம் வெளிபடுத்தியவர், மகாகவி சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார்.

 1921 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை மாதம் திருவல்லிகேணியில் உள்ள பார்த்தசாரதி கோவிலுக்கு சென்றபோது, எதிர்பாராவிதமாக அந்த கோவில் யானையால் தூக்கி எறியப்பட்டதால் பலத்த காயமுற்று மிகவும் நோய்வாய்ப்பட்டார். பிறகு, 1921 செப்டம்பர் 11ம் தேதி, தனது 39 ஆவது வயதில் இவ்வுலக வாழ்விலிருந்து விடுதலைப் பெற்றார்.

பாரதியாரை நினைவூட்டும் சின்னங்கள்

எட்டயபுரத்திலும், சென்னையில் உள்ள திருவல்லிக்கேணியிலும் பாரதியார் வாழ்ந்த இடத்தை பாரதியாரின் நினைவு இல்லமாக தமிழ்நாடு அரசு மாற்றி இன்று வரை பொதுமக்களின் பார்வைக்காக பராமரித்து வருகிறது. இவர் பிறந்த எட்டயபுரத்தில், பாரதியின் நினைவாக மணிமண்டபமும் அமைக்கப்பட்டு இவருடைய திருவுருவச் சிலையும் வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. பாரதியின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு தொடர்பான புகைப்படக் கண்காட்சியும், இவருடைய திருவுருவச் சிலையும், இவரின் நினைவை போற்றும் வகையில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பாரதியை மக்கள், ‘கவி’, ‘மானுடம் பாடவந்த மாகவி’, ‘புது நெறி காட்டிய புலவன்’, எ’ண்ணத்தாலும் எழுத்தாலும் இந்திய சிந்தனைக்கு வளம் சேர்த்தவர்’, ‘பல்துறை அறிஞர்’, ‘புதிய தமிழகத்தை உருவாக்க கனவு கண்ட கவிக்குயில்’, ‘தமிழின் கவிதை’ மற்றும் உரைநடையில் தன்னிகரற்ற புலமை பெற்ற பேரறிவாளர்,  என்றெல்லாம் புகழ்கின்றனர். உலகதமிழர் நாவில் மக்கள்கவி பாரதியாரின் பெயர் அடிக்கடி உச்சரிக்கபடுகிறது என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது.

பொதுநலம் அன்பர்களுக்கு பணிவான வணக்கம். இந்த பதிவில் கட்டுரை எழுதுவது எப்படி என்று பார்க்கலாம். கட்டுரை என்றாலே அதற்கு கச்சிதமான வடிவமைப்பு தேவை. கட்டுரை ஒரே உடல் கொண்டதாக இருக்க வேண்டும். இரு தனி விஷயங்கள் இணைக்கப்பட்டது போல தோன்றவே கூடாது. கட்டுரையில் நாம் ஒரு செய்தியை சொல்லும் போது அக்கட்டுரையின் விவாதத்துக்கு என்ன தேவையோ அதை மட்டுமே கட்டுரையில் இருந்து எடுத்து முன்வைக்க வேண்டும். சுவாரஸியமாக இருக்கிறதே என சம்பந்தம் இல்லாததை சொல்வதை தவிர்க்கவும். கட்டுரைகளில் பல வகையான கட்டுரை உண்டு. அவை விளக்க கட்டுரை, விவாகக் கட்டுரை, பயணக் கட்டுரை, அனுபவ கட்டுரை என பலவகையான கட்டுரை இருந்தாலும் பொதுவாக கட்டுரையை எப்படி எழுதுவது என்று தெரிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.

கட்டுரை எழுதுவது எப்படி:

கட்டுரைக்கு முக்கியம் முன்னுரை, மைய கருத்து, முடிவுரை. இந்த வடிவில் இருந்தால் தான் கட்டுரையானது முழுமை பெறும். படிப்பதற்கும் வசதியாக இருக்கும்.

படிக்கும் வாசகர்களுக்கு முன்னுரையிலே நாம் சொல்ல வந்ததை புரிந்துக்கொள்ளும் அளவிற்கு இருத்தல் வேண்டும். கட்டுரையில் முன்னுரையானது அதிக அளவில் இல்லாமல் சிறிய அளவில் இருத்தலே சிறந்தது.

மையக்கருத்து:

நாம் எழுதும் கட்டுரையில் அதற்கான மையக்கருத்தினை முதல் வரியிலையே வாசகர்களுக்கு தெரியப்படுத்த வேண்டும். அதாவது கட்டுரை இதனை பற்றியது தான் என்று அவர்களுக்கு படித்தவுடனே தெரிந்துக்கொள்ளுமாறு இருக்க வேண்டும்.  நாம் எழுதும் கட்டுரையின் பொருளை விளக்கி கூறும்போது பத்தி பிரித்து எழுத வேண்டும்.

ஒரு பத்தி (பந்தி) எழுதும் போது அதன் கருத்து முழுமையாக இருக்க வேண்டும். ஒரு பத்தி (பந்தி) முழுமையாக நிறைவடைந்த பின் அடுத்த பத்தியில் (பந்தியில்) வேறு கருத்துக்களை எழுத தொடங்க வேண்டும். பத்தி (பந்தி) பிரிக்கும் போது கருத்தின் அடிப்படையிலே பத்தி பிரிய வேண்டும்.

மையக்கருத்தை விளக்கும் இடத்தில் அதற்கான ஆதாரம், சம்பந்தப்பட்ட நிகழ்ச்சிகள் மற்றும் அனுபவங்கள் போன்றவற்றை இணைத்து எழுதி வந்தால் கட்டுரை நயம் நன்றாக இருக்கும்.

கட்டுரை எழுதும் போது நாம் நினைவில் வைத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டியவை:

• கட்டுரை எழுத தொடங்கும் முன் கட்டுரையின் தலைப்பினை படிப்பவர்களுக்கு நன்றாக புரியும் வகையில் விளக்கவும்.
• படிப்பவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் தெளிவான மொழிநடையில் விளக்க கூடியதாக கட்டுரையை எழுத வேண்டும்.
• கட்டுரையில் எழுத்து பிழைகள் இல்லாமல் எழுத வேண்டும்.
• குறிப்பாக கட்டுரையில் சரியான நிறுத்தல் குறியீடுகள், மேற்கோள் குறிகள் பொருத்தமான இடத்தில் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்.
• கட்டுரை தலைப்பை நோக்கி ஏன்..? எப்படி..? எதற்கு..? யார்..? என சில கேள்விகளை கேளுங்கள் அதற்கு விடையாக வருவதை கொண்டு சிறந்த கட்டுரையினை எழுத முடியும்.
• நீங்கள் எழுதும் கட்டுரை படிப்பவர்களின் மனதை ஈர்க்கும் வண்ணம் இருக்க வேண்டும். வாசகர்கள் கட்டுரையை ஆர்வமாக படிக்கும் படி எழுத வேண்டும்.

முடிவுரை என்பது கட்டுரையில் நாம் கூறிய மையக்கருத்தை தெளிவாக வலியுறுத்துவதாக இருக்க வேண்டும். அத்துடன் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்துக்களை தொகுத்து கூறுவதாக அமைய வேண்டும்.

கட்டுரையின் முடிவுரையை அதிகமாக எழுதுதல் கூடாது. முடிவுரையை நான்கு அல்லது ஐந்து வரிகளுக்குள் எழுதி முடிக்க வேண்டும். அதுவே கட்டுரைக்கு சிறப்பு.

Love & the loveless: classic tamil poems — translated by a. anupama.

Tirukkural encodes the cultural intelligence of the Tamil people in its 1,330 couplets (called kurals), written sometime between the third and first centuries BCE in south India by the legendary poet Tiruvalluvar. Like other classical Indian treatises on right living, Tirukkural starts with a section on virtue (dharma), continues on to a section on wealth (artha), and then covers love (kama). (More about Tirukkural can be found in my earlier essay, here on NC. )

Though ancient in origin, these verses are still alive in Tamil culture. My mother tells me that the local Indian cultural association where she lives in rural Ohio has just started a kural-memorization competition for the kids. Each participant has to start from the beginning of Tirukkural, the very first couplet, and recite as much as he or she can remember. The prizes are awarded to the top memorizers, one dollar per kural. I laughed, thinking of how much money a kid could make if she made it all the way to the section on wealth (that’s $380 for getting there).

Chapter 8: On possessing love

In love, what lock? Heartache gleams on the tear tracks left in its wake.

The loveless take all for themselves, but those who love own not even their bones.

Love unites thought and action in pure life— a consummation to the very marrow.

Love’s thrill leads to friendship—boundless bliss.

Love’s possessors manufacture this world’s joy, and, by possessing joy, win glory.

Pure virtue is love’s sole fruit according to the ignorant, oblivious that pure valor ripens alongside.

Boneless worms in sunlight burn, as do loveless people in moral virtue.

Loveless hearts bloom in an arid waste on parched trees, withering.

What use are the outer limbs of the body without the inner limb?

A love-filled path is the soul, without which the body is only bones covered over with skin.

Chapter 122: On night visions

My love’s messenger came to me: a dream. What feast of thanks can I offer it?

Of my eyes, shaped like darting fish, I beg sleep. Then for my love truth will pour from my suffering heart.

Awake, he never came to me, but, asleep, seeing him preserves my life.

In dreams, I seek that fierce pleasure, which in my waking life avoids me: I find him.

Awake, my vision and its dream met in one sweet moment.

If waking life would cease and only sleep persist my love would never leave my mind.

Awake, he never came near. What cruelty takes, in my sleep, its right to torture me?

I dreamt he made love to me. When I woke, he swiftly entered my heart.

In this waking life, he offered me nothing. Yet I ached when in my dream my love evaporated from my longing eyes.

Every day they will gossip about us and my forsakenness. But my dream they didn’t glimpse, thankfully, these villagers.

Tamil Poetry: An Amateur Analysis

Why are Tamil Lyrics so Awesome?

I notice that the standard of Tamil lyrics seems to be deceptively high (Hindi too, I guess). Perhaps because there are so many Tamil songs with great similes and alliteration and rhymes, I don’t feel as impressed with them as when I read some English poetry that has a little bit of a rhyme going.

For example, just look at Saarattu Vandiyil from Kaatru Veliyidai:

That feels like effortless alliteration with the M’s and P’s and K’s (along with the rhymes for maalai, paalai, saelai). I didn’t even notice until I paid attention. It just flowed. This seems to be the standard for Indian lyrics.

Or my favourite example of alliteration (from Minsara Kanna, Padayappa):

So many vords vith V’s! I can’t readily think of English lyrics or poetry like that (though that could just be my ignorance).

Friend : The bigger difference IMO is that words in English end with half sounds while the Tamizh words used in poetry a lot of them are complete and end with a vowel. That provides for a much better flow of sound than it would ever be possible in English. And that’s why some consider “Telugu” to be the best language to compose songs in.

Agreed. That seems to be a big factor too.

Word order too doesn’t matter much in Tamil (haven’t thought about this for other Indian languages). I saw this relevant Quora answer:

In straight sentences, the meaning will remain intact even if we change the order of the words. Example: Raaman Raavananai Kondraan. It works even if we say it as Raavananai Kondraan Raaman. All combinations give us the same meaning. In English, Let us take the same sentence: Rama killed Ravana. If you change it to, say, Ravana killed Rama, the whole meaning goes for a toss!! – Languages of India: What are some mind-blowing facts about Tamil?

I guess that makes it easier to arrange words to fit your rhyme scheme.

Poetic Languages?

Hypothesis (Better for poetry) : My hypothesis is that Tamil and Hindi and other Indian languages were optimized for poetry (compared to English) since works had to be passed on and memorized orally, and songs are far easier to memorize than straight prose (I bet you still remember shlokas from childhood - even I do).

Friend : It’s an interesting hypothesis. How do you convert it into a falsifiable one though :D ? What would be an interesting comparison would be 2 languages of similar times. Like if Latin - Samskrutam - Tamizh or a contemporary language similar to English - and say Malayalam.

We need to operationalize the term “better for composing poetry” so that we can compare languages.

Hypothesis (Easier to remember) : A poem is easier to remember when it has more of alliteration, similes, metaphors, repetition, and rhymes.

There are probably other factors too that aid memory, such as meter or verse form or metonymy, but we’ll stick to these for now (mainly because I’m not too familiar with those others :P).

So, if one language allows more of these than another, we will consider it better for composing poetry. Roughly, if it’s easier to compose poems that are easy to remember, then it’s a good language for composition.

(We’ve already seen some relevant factors like having words that end with vowels and allowing flexible word order, which should help in creating rhyming words.)

Note: Perhaps the factors mentioned above make a poem more enjoyable too. But right now, we’re focussing on memory, not pleasure.

Experiment: Compare two Songs

We can begin with a small, simple, crude test.

Taylor Swift: I Knew You Were Trouble

Let’s see how many of the above factors we can find in a Taylor Swift song (she’s held to be one of the best lyricists among current pop artists).

Bird metaphor; rhyme “in” with “been” (pronounced as “bin”).

Rhyme: “down”, “now”, “ground”

Rhyme: “cry”, “why”

Rhyme: “street”, “be” (?)

Repetition (same line as before)

(We can differ on the exact numbers, but they should be in the ballpark)

I couldn’t find a noticeable rhyme scheme. It felt like a story sung to a tune. Couldn’t find much alliteration either.

Note: Things like song structure and tunes also matter, but right now we’re talking about setting stories in rhythmic verse (like the Mahabharata), not necessarily making them into songs.

Taylor Swift - 22

Here’s another TS song. The previous one didn’t have much rhyme. It could be an aberration. So, to even things out:

I’ll look for alliteration in the Tamil verses and for similes and metaphors in the English translation. There are a lot of errors in the lyrics provided; I’ve quoted them as given.

Observation: This song scores lower on repetition, way higher on everything else.

The fact that the Tamil song has a lot more similes and alliteration will seem irrelevant if you disagree with my ease of memorization hypothesis, because you will believe something else makes poems easier to remember.

Plus, the Taylor Swift song could, of course, be far more relatable to modern kids (and thus easier to remember). “No apologies. He’ll never see you cry, pretends he doesn’t know that he’s the reason why” needs no explanation. Whereas “ival thennaattin naangaam kadalaa” is a reference I didn’t catch - I don’t know what the three seas of the south are. Is he talking about the Arabian sea, Indian ocean, and the Bay of Bengal? Or a more obscure classical thing? I don’t know and, in any case, I still can’t see why calling her a sea makes sense (leave alone calling her a “God particle” - SMH). Basically, you can go afield with your metaphors.

So, treat the above as a simple set of observations (there are X similes and Y rhyming words in a particular TS song vs a typical Tamil song) and make your own inferences.

Any theory you come up with should explain why this particular Tamil song (and by extension most other Tamil songs) had way more similes and alliteration and rhyming words than this particular English song (and by extension most other English songs).

Also feel free to analyze the two songs for other factors (like meter or verse form or whatever).

Inferences and Hypotheses

Hypothesis : I think Tamil makes it easier for you to write poems with lots of alliterations and rhymes. Maybe it’s the flexible word order. Maybe it’s also that there exist a lot of words with the same beginnings so that you can get alliterations more easily. Or it’s just that Tamil poets are trying really hard to come up with alliterations and rhymes.

Also, maybe Tamil words have common endings that make them easier to rhyme. Hindi has this too. For example, the title song in “Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai” has a rhyme scheme full of words ending in “ -aar ”, such as “Dil mera har baar yeh, sunne ko bekaraar hai… Kaho naa pyaar hai.” There are a lot of Hindi words ending with “-aar”. (Here are all the -aar words in that song: “baar bekaraar ikraar intezaar izhaar pyaar yaadgaar yaar”)

Hmm… Tamil syllables seem to have basic consonants along with a few possible modifications. For example, with ‘m’, you could have maa, mee, mu, moo, etc. So, rhyming words becomes a matter of looking at words that have the same final syllable. (You could of course go for even two syllables or more.)

I’m guessing there are fewer possible final syllables in Tamil and thus a lot of possible words that end in the same syllable and thus rhyme together. We need to check if English has a lot more possible final syllables and thus fewer words that end in the same syllable.

Alliteration is just the inverse: group words that start with the same syllable (or syllables).

Test: Check with English rap songs. They need to rhyme a lot. How do they manage it? (I’m told that Eminem takes it as a personal challenge to be able to rhyme any word he comes across.)

We can look at possible historical causes after we can find enough evidence to become confident that Tamil makes rhyming and alliteration easier than English. Perhaps any orally-designed language has a limited number of final syllables and thus a lot of rhyming words, and mixed-bag languages like English have a lot of final syllables (such as “-text”, “-tract”, “-dent”) and thus fewer rhyming words. (I could be completely wrong about this.)

And this isn’t an East vs West thing. I bet Greek is a good language for poetry too, given all the epics composed orally in it, like the Odyssey.

Question : What about the abnormally high number of metaphors, though? Why would one language support metaphors any more than another?

The syntax of a language and the available words might restrict or foster rhyme and alliteration. But metaphors are just metaphors, right? Why didn’t the English song have a lot of (or actually, any) metaphors?

Perhaps using metaphors was a classical habit that was lost by modern English lyricists. Later, we might look at English poems, such as those written by Percy Bysshe Shelley or William Wordsworth.

We could also test Hindi or Telugu songs to see if they contain a lot of metaphors and alliteration and rhyme too.

Nature appealed to him as a mystic and majestic presence that always casts an impact on the human mind. His poetry draws us back in the soothing lap of nature from this world of teens and travails. In his love for nature, he calls nature the ‘the nurse, the guide, the guardian of my heart/and the soul of all my moral being.’ He has this firm faith that close contact with nature can make us more human, kind, and generous to our fellow beings. His poetry is sensitive, impressive, and educative too. Among his famous poems, “The Solitary Reaper, Lines on Tintern Abbey, on Westminster Bridge and Daffodils’-I like ‘The Daffodils’, the best. In it, describing the beautiful daffodil flowers, he conveys how nature can be a perpetual source of joy and solace to the human heart. I always derive some inspiration and calm from his poetry.

There are many well-known names in the world of literature. The poems of Williams Words have impressed me the most. His poems soothe the sense. He was a devotee of nature. He was inspired by nature to write poetry. Recording Wordsworth is like sitting amidst nature.

William Wordsworth was the pioneer of the English Romantic Movement. He launched the English Romantic Revolution with the help of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was the poet laureate of England from 1843 to 1850. His poems depict man’s relation with nature. He also placed poetry at the center of human experience. Wordsworth created some of the greatest English poets of his centenary.

Wordsworth was born on April 7, 1770, in the Lake District of northern England. He was the second of five children of a prosperous estate manager. Both his parents died at an early age and so Wordsworth Was sent off by his guardian to a grammar school at Hawkshead. There he received education in classics literature and mathematics. There he received education in classics, literature, and mathematics. The beautiful landscape at Hawkshead gave him confidence and pleasure and it inspired him. He grew amidst nature playing and indulging in boyhood pleasure outdoors.

Wordsworth was an interpreter of nature in her many moods. The natural scenery of English lakes could terrify as well as please, which Wordsworth has later testified in his line, ” I grew up fostered alike by beauty and boy fear.” But its generally benign aspect gave the growing boy the confidence he articulated in one of his important poems Tintern Abbey ” that Nature never did betray the heart that loved her.

Wordsworth moved on in 1787 to St. John College, Cambridge. After attaining his degree from Cambridge he went to France he had to return to England in 1792.

For the first three or four years after his return to England Wordsworth had virtually no work. The aftermath of the war moved Wordsworth with sympathy for the sufferers. At this time he started writing poetry. He also reunited with his sister Dorothy whom he loved dearly. Wordsworth also became friends with Samuel Taylor Coleridge a fellow poet. They formed a partnership in writing. It is this partnership that altered the course of English poetry.

The Prelude is among Wordsworth’s finest poems. It reflects the growth of a poet’s mind. It is an autobiographical poem. It describes the way in which the imagination overpowers the reason and the senses. Wordsworth’s other works include The Excursion Ecclesiastical Sketches, Home at Grasmere The Borderers, Salisbury Plain, The River Duddon, etc. In his later years, Wordsworth revised the edition of his earlier poems.

Wordsworth wrote in Tintern Abbey that Nature never did betray the heart that loved her. He formulated in his poems, a new attitude towards nature. He introduced nature imagery into his poems. Wordsworth nature. He introduced nature imagery into his poems. Wordsworth was a worshipper of nature which is evident in his poems.

According to Wordsworth poetry is the first and last of all knowledge it is as immortal as the heart of man. Critics place Wordsworth next to John Milton and William Shakespeare among all-time great poets of English Literature. His contribution to English Literature is immense.

எப்படியோ அப்பாவையும் சமாதானப்படுத்தினேன். அவருக்கும் நாய்கள் என்றால் மிகவும் பிடிக்கும் என்பதால், அவரை சமாதானப்படுத்துவது சிரமமாக இருக்கவில்லை. இதையெல்லாம் ஏற்று கடைசியில் அம்மாவும் சம்மதித்தார். நாங்கள் அருகிலுள்ள செல்லப் பிராணிகளுக்கான கடைக்குச் சென்றோம், இந்த 2 மாத ஜெர்மன் ஷெப்பர்ட் ஒரு சிறிய கூண்டில் நிம்மதியாக தூங்குவதைப் பார்க்க என் இதயம் பிடித்தது. இது தான் என் வீட்டில் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று பார்த்தவுடனே தெரிந்தது.

ரோஜர் மிகவும் சிறியவராகவும் இனிமையாகவும் இருந்தார், அவரை வீட்டிற்கு அழைத்து வந்தவுடன் என் குடும்பத்தில் உள்ள அனைவரும் அவரை காதலித்தனர். வீட்டு நாயை வீட்டிற்கு கொண்டு வருவதை வெறுத்த என் அம்மா, நேரம் செல்ல செல்ல அதை அழகாகக் கண்டார். நாய் குழந்தைகளை மிகவும் விரும்புகிறது மற்றும் அவர்களை மிகவும் பாதுகாக்கிறது. இதனால் ரோஜரும் எனது தம்பியும் நண்பர்களானார்கள். ரோஜரை குடும்பத்தில் சேர்க்க நான் மிகவும் உற்சாகமாக இருந்தேன். இந்த நாளைப் பற்றி எனது நண்பர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் நான் ஏற்கனவே கூறியிருந்தேன்.
