See what students say:

Montreal’s McGill University is a public research institution teeming with “international recognition” and amazing “academic and research opportunities.” Students fortunate enough to attend have “access to world-class resources and professors” as well as a “beautiful campus”—all at a “low cost.” They also benefit from “an atmosphere that cultivates critical thinking and broadens your perspective of the world.” Though a few individuals do complain that first-year classes can be “huge and [comprised of] impersonal lectures,” they also reveal that “the higher you get in courses, the better they become.” Further, “smaller class sizes” are the norm in departments such as “English, History, and Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LLC).” Regardless of what you ultimately choose to study, McGill undergrads generally find their professors to be “very well-versed in their subjects and...passionate.” Importantly, they’re also “dedicated” and “accessible.” But they won’t let their students slack. As one undergrad shares, “The amount of work is a little excessive during some stretches, and the grading is by no means easy.” Fortunately, instructors do “encourage students to come to conferences and office hours.” And it’s clearly evident that “the faculty truly love what they teach.”

Student Body

Undergrads at McGill University take pride in the fact that their peers are “highly diverse” and hail from a number of countries. Of course, there are plenty of Montreal natives as well. And many suggest that the “bilingualism of local students...adds to the cultural experience” as well. Looking beyond geography, undergrads here also reveal that their peers are “very hardworking and committed to school, spending many hours a day studying.” They also tend to be quite “inclusive.” One student shares, “All of the students are open-minded and appreciative of the differences that make our school [unique].” A fellow undergrad adds, “I haven’t met a rude student yet. Everyone is kind and willing to collaborate or help.” This attitude could be attributed to the fact that undergrads here “are always working on personally developing themselves, academically, and culturally.” McGill also boasts that its peers are “motivated to do well and be successful and help as many people in the world as they can.” When it comes to politics, students are “mostly liberal or left leaning.” And perhaps most importantly, “Despite having a large student body with nearly 40,000 individuals, the McGill community will never let you feel insignificant as an individual.”

Campus Life

McGill University undergrads are pretty honest about the fact that they “mostly spend their time studying.” After all, classes can be very demanding and “time consuming.” Nevertheless, even these intellectually-minded students need to kick back every now and again. When they’re looking for a break, undergrads can turn to the “on-campus...pubs [which frequently host] events.” McGill undergrads also tend to be “very active in the community” and often carve out some “time for volunteering.” It’s also quite common for students to organize and stage “music shows...themselves.” For students looking to enjoy the outdoors, the Macdonald campus has a [great] area to hike in, an arboretum, and a bird observatory just half an hour away by walk.” Or, as one ecstatic student sees it, “We have a magical forest to escape to in any season!” Once the weekend arrives, it is “party time.” One knowing student explains, “First-year students often party [in] residence or go to local bars, while upperclassmen go to clubs more often.” Lastly, hometown Montreal offers plenty of excitement. Students can explore everything from the newest cafes to museums and cutting edge art galleries. This city has something for everyone, no matter your interests.

Ph.D. Courses

  • Nominally, students in the Ph.D. program must successfully complete eight graduate courses, of which at least five are computer science courses.
  • Graduate-level courses taken in the past, however, may count towards this requirement. Course reduction requests are considered only in the first few weeks of the beginning of the fall and winter terms and require the student to submit a course reduction request form well in advance. The forms must be sent to the graduate secretary.
  • Regardless of the result of the course reduction request, every Ph.D. student must take at least two courses from the School of Computer Science at McGill.
  • According to a GPS rule, no more than one-third of the McGill program formal coursework can be credited with courses from another university.
  • While the students can use the course reduction request to reduce their course requirement to only two courses, we strongly recommend the students view the possibility of taking several courses during their Ph.D. as an opportunity. The students should take advantage of the many graduate courses that are offered in the department and build a solid and broad foundation for their knowledge of computer science.
  • Courses are divided into two broad categories. The students who do not have an undergraduate degree in computer science or computer engineering must have course credit for at least two courses from each category. Note that this is not an exhaustive (or well maintained) list, and students should consult their supervisor or the graduate program director if in doubt.

Why McGill?

McGill University is one of the top research universities in Canada, as well as one of the only Canadian university to rank consistently among the top 40 universities in the world (based on Times and QS rankings ). The School of Computer Science currently stands second in Canada for its research funding. Our professors have received most of the top awards in Computer Science , while our students go on to become top-notch research and industry leaders. Graduating with a degree from the McGill School of Computer Science is recognized in both the academic and industrial worlds as a proof of excellence.

Our department is currently 43 faculty members strong, 60 Ph.D. students, and 100 Masters students. All of our Ph.D. students and most of our Masters students are funded through teaching assistantships or research assistantships. Approximately half our graduate students are Canadian and the other half are from abroad.

McGill is an English language university located in the heart of Montreal, the second largest French-speaking city in the world. Montreal has a reputation for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, history, cultural and sport activities, and excellent restaurants. The cultural offerings of the city include a symphony orchestra, ballet, opera, several theaters and museums. For outdoor recreation, Mount Royal, a wooded mountain with a lake and parks located very close to the university, along with the St. Lawrence river, the many lakes and parks around the island of Montreal, provide opportunity for a wide variety of activities. Montreal consistently ranks among the most livable cities in the world, and the cost of living is among the lowest for cities of its size. The city is extremely safe and has an excellent public transportation system. Note that although speaking French is useful to fully enjoy your experience in Montreal, it is by no means necessary, as English is also spoken fluently by most of the population. More information can be found on the McGill Prospective Students web page , while information on Montreal is available from Montreal International .

The Academic Year

The academic year at McGill, as at most Canadian universities, has two terms (or semesters). These are the Fall term - early September to early December - and the Winter term - early January to mid-April. There is also a Summer term, although no graduate courses are offered during this session. It is used by students as a time for research or completing projects or theses.

Important Information for International Students

All students who are not citizens or permanent residents of Canada are required to obtain the necessary Visa and/or Student Authorization documents prior to entering the country. Do NOT leave home without proper documentation! You CANNOT change your status from Visitor to Student when in Canada.

Student Authorization: Issued by Canada Immigration through a Canadian Embassy or Consulate. There is a processing fee of $125 on all applications for Student Authorizations. LINK

Certificate of Acceptance (CAQ): Issued by Quebec Immigration for a fee of $100. If there is no Quebec Immigration office in the country in which you are applying, you must fill out the application for a CAQ and send it to the Quebec Immigration Office in Montreal along with the $100 processing fee. Once CAQ is approved, Quebec Immigration will telex the Canadian Embassy you are dealing with. If there is a Quebec Immigration office in the country in which you are applying, you apply for the CAQ through them.

Health Insurance (Compulsory): Quebec requires all international students to participate in a recognized Health Insurance Plan. Cost is approximately $500 per year for a single person. Most students use one of the insurance plans offered by McGill.

Student Accommodation

Off-campus housing is the most popular among McGill graduate students, as it is usually affordable, convenient, and easy to find. The Off-Campus Housing Service keeps a computerized list of available housing within walking distance of McGill, or easily accessible by metro and bus lines. Most listings are checked to ensure minimum standards of cleanliness and state of repair. Rental rates vary according to accommodation desired, but are considered very reasonable in comparison with most North American cities. The University maintains a limited number of apartment units in several nearby locations. Housing request forms can be obtained from the Graduate Housing office.

It is a great pleasure to announce that our colleague Courtney Paquette has been named a 2024 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Computer Science.

Machine learning relies heavily on probabilistic optimization algorithms.

While machine learning papers are written at a staggering rate, there is much less foundational mathematical work that addresses the success of machine learning.

Since her PhD, Courtney has been at the forefront of this foundational work.

More recently, with her partner in crime Elliot Paquette, she has developed a pioneering program blending random matrices, high dimensional probability and optimization theory.

Please join me in congratulating Courtney on this huge, highly deserved honour.
