10 Ways to Prepare a Great Future for Your Family

All Pro Dad

All Pro Dad

In 1993, AT&T had a series of ads called “You Will.” In the ads, AT&T posed the question, “Have you ever?” and followed up that question with a number of scenarios we thought were crazy in 1993. Here are some examples: “Have you ever driven across the country without stopping for directions?” Meanwhile, the ad showed a screen on the center console of the car with a voiced navigation screen. “Have you ever paid a toll without slowing down?” the voiceover says as a car passes through the toll moving fast. “Have you ever sent a fax from the beach?” the voiceover says while the commercial views a man on a beach writing words on a digital tablet and pressing send. A couple of decades later, we know AT&T was uncannily accurate in its prediction of the future. Getting people to prepare for the future was a great business strategy.

But how about a 20-year plan for your family? Your kids will be grown and gone. You may be a grandparent at that point. You’ll probably be looking back over your life wondering how time flew so fast. You can put yourself in a great position then by implementing the 10 ways to plan for your family 20 years from now and achieve your family goals.

1. Live for today.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but it’s not. Jesus told a great story about a man who spent every waking hour accumulating things for the future and building increasingly bigger sheds to put it all in. Unfortunately, he never got to see 20 years into the future. It’s OK to plan for the future, but don’t miss what is going on now. If we’re careful to live for today , then we’re building a solid foundation for years.

2. Practice balance.

Wisdom is not having to go to the store for milk right before breakfast. Living for today includes appropriate planning for tomorrow. Today balanced with tomorrow, family relationships balanced against making a living. Find that balance because it won’t find you.

3. Spend less than you earn—every month.

This is a simple guideline with complex repercussions. Digging out of debt is like building a wall with dry sand—more than half of each shovel load comes right back down. First, stabilize your spending. Second, pay off the debt. Remember that you will pay more interest on your debt than you can earn from your savings. Get rid of debt; then you can prepare for the future.

4. Invest yourself in your children.

Here’s the math (don’t worry, it’s fairly painless!). Parental neglect to your 5-year-old + a couple of years = 40% of the child’s life. But if you turn things around now, by the time he’s 10, you’ll have been the world’s best dad forever. The more years we let slip away, the deeper in the hole relationships become. It’s like negative interest compounded daily. Simply put, today is the right time to be a great dad. You’ll have that investment 20 years down the road and in spades.

5. Make the tough choices today.

Don’t say “I’ll spend time with my kids next year…” Invest in family time today. Don’t deal with your distant relationship with your wife “once we’ve got the kids settled in school.” Face the music before the damage solidifies. Don’t say that “we’ll take care of us, the budget, or our priorities after the kids go to college.” Bite the bullet now.

6. If you’re married, love your wife eloquently.

Too many parents neglect one another in favor of the kids. Big mistake. Your best gift to your children today is to love their mother. If you’re divorced, handle that one by offering respect and support. No matter how old the kids are today, they’ll be young adults in 20 years. Two decades of love and respect is the best way to prepare for the future.

7. Build memories that will make you smile.

This is a direct offshoot of points one through five above. We may or may not live in this neighborhood, at this income level, or in this physical health in 20 years, but our family will have these memories to last a lifetime.

8. Never give up.

Ordinary families struggle. Struggle is part of life, but you can be no ordinary family too. It’s how we respond to challenges that determines what the family looks like 20 years from now. For family, faithfulness is more than just a physical discipline—it’s a modus operandi. This is teaching our children well.

9. Always believe.

Too many families lose hope when they face tough stuff. But if today we maintain hope—if we choose to believe that one day we’ll look back and marvel at how far we’ve come—we’ll get through what we’re going through with a lot more ease. Believe deliberately, repeatedly, and together.

People with unhealed wounds end up wounding the people around them. And if those people don’t seek healing either, they wound others, too. If we choose to stay as-is, we make an impact on generations to come—and not the best impact we could have. Everyone has room to grow and reasons to heal. What wound haven’t you tended to yet? Start that today, and the future of your family will get brighter.

Sound off: What do you think is the best way to prepare for the future?

It is difficult for me to make a choice because I am aware that the decision will impact my entire life. I always dream of a profession that I can enjoy, that brings a challenge to me and satisfies me. I believe in a job that is like a hobby for me. I just don’t want to do the job to make money. Instead, I want to love my profession and duty. Also, my job should be such that I contribute to society and help people.

From my childhood, I always wanted to treat people and cure their diseases. So, to fulfil this dream of becoming a doctor, I have some future plans. Firstly, I have to complete my secondary schooling. Then, I have to complete my higher secondary education, and thereafter, I would like to study in a prestigious medical college and later become a doctor.

Studying medical science takes a long time. It is a difficult course and requires a tremendous amount of hard work and patience. It will be the best kickstart for my career as a future medical student.

As for now, I am focusing on my studies and looking forward to completing my schooling. I do have a future plan for my family. But, before that, I would like to travel the world. I want to visit different countries like America, Finland and London and travel to all the continents. After finishing my education and going on a world trip, I would like to settle down in my life. So, I will get married and would love to have a small family. I would like to have a small home in a natural and calm place where I can live and enjoy myself with my family.

Ask an Expert: How Can I Plan for a Successful Career and a Family?

  • Danna Greenberg

future plan for the family essay

Reminder: There is no “ideal time” to have kids.

In your early career, it can be tough to plan for the future — especially when it comes to deciding if and when to start a family. Here are five steps you can take now to create a strong foundation for building the life you want in the future.

  • Know there is no “ideal time” to start a family. Research shows that the majority of college-educated women are more likely to become first-time mothers in their 30s, not their 20s.
  • Take control of your reproductive health. For those assigned female at birth who are looking to conceive (as opposed to adopt) children, it’s important to have conversations about your reproductive health with your doctors early and often.
  • “Lean” into your career. Young professional women should plan now for how they will expand their skills and experience, and gain power so they can advocate for the work/life arrangement they want in the future.
  • Explore different work/family paths. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the working parents in your professional and personal life to ask for their advice.
  • Establish a solid partnership at home. The home-management routines couples establish before children sets the stage for how they will manage caregiving in the future.

Educational Plan

Lifestyle plan, works cited.

Planning ten years of my life seems like a kind of challenge now. We can’t predict what will happen to us after several months. However, I believe that great success is impossible without personal motivation and clearly defined goals. Thus, my life plan essay should start with a clear objective.

In ten years, I want to own an event company that can be the best in its field. I have always been fascinated with this idea. The following 10-year life plan essay will consist of three parts that can help me structure my future and achieve all my goals.

I would like to organize great performances at different events every day. Can you imagine a holiday that never ends? And this will be my work. I will make people happier. Now I need to plan all the steps to help me achieve my dream.

The first step of the way of my goal’s achievement is education. My education will be done at the University of Nevada, where I am planning to study hospitality management as a major and event management as a minor. I am sure of the importance of hard study for my future work. I need to get at least a 3.5 GPA. The multiple locations can help me gain a diversified background and extend my knowledge.

Therefore, I want to do some internship while studying. Perhaps, I will visit different countries to explore the modern tendencies of business start and its future development. Swope says: “I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: “Try to please everybody” (Swope).

Therefore, I am planning to get experience in different fields because I am sure of their future importance for my business. The examples of some international companies can help me understand how to make my business prosper. To extend my experience, I will start my practice during the study.

I think that education is very important. The lack of knowledge can lead to the business’s incapacity and collapse. Today, the diploma plays a significant role. It gives an appropriate status and respect. A man with a diploma looks more confident and, of course, qualified.

Accreditation provides much more opportunities in life. Therefore, I am planning to study hard and get as much knowledge as possible. I am sure that the university I chose can help me achieve my goals. My education will give me the base for my future business.

It is the most important part of the life plan, which should clarify the goal and approaches to its achievement. Nowadays, the leaders of all companies know the value of settings achievable and understandable goals. Such issues are called smart goals, which need to get better results. These smart ideas help me share my vision of the business with the possible assistants (“Life Planning”).

My attention is turned to the use of certain tools that may help my project. For instance, I need to identify and list all the barriers that may be between me and my goal. I shouldn’t be scared of possible problems because it is an integral part of my future success. Being realistic, I realize all the difficulties I should overcome.

In the beginning, I have to clarify who will be involved in my business. This can be a family company, or I can cooperate with a wide circle of partners. What results do I want to achieve? I want to own a successful company that will be famous around the country.

Choosing the place location, I prefer my native city because it will be easier to find clients and partners. Thinking about these questions, I can clearly understand all the important keys to my goal’s achievement. I will get so many opportunities, so I shouldn’t be lazy in its use (Ashton 8). This is why I think it is the most important period of my life.

My lifestyle should accomplish my educational and professional background and skills. I am planning to do a huge social work and to promote equality among people. I want to help everyone that I can. But I have to learn more from the closest one.

My business will be closely related to people from different communities. Therefore, matching my wants, I should be ready to keep my mind open to different cultural issues and views. I plan to visit many countries to learn about cultural features. This will help in my work with clients.

According to Bukofsky, even my religious and spiritual conditions are very important for my business (34). Family relations also play a huge role in the business success achievement. Life planning is a process that may lead a person to take a more active role and to think about the future. Thinking about my future, I imagine a family that will support me and give me more motivation.

I totally agree with Carlson that “self-actualization is the key to self-help” (9). Although no one can control all life’s events, it is better to try being over random chance and fate.

There is a difference between the person who goes to one’s goal and the man who can easily be influenced by random events. I will structure my life according to the daily plan. This will allow me to follow the main idea, which will lead to success. The life plan is a perfect method to figure out what is really important in life.

I have so many ideas and interests in different fields. I am fascinated by people who can concentrate on the most important idea and follow the plan. However, I should follow my own life plan for the future result. I agree with the statement of Barnett that people should discipline themselves. Following the main idea of life, it is possible to get better results and to make it fast (Barnett).

I have always been a goal-setter. Thereby, my Ten Year Plan is focused on achieving my high ideals and realistic goals. From time to time, it seems that goals are something that we strive to achieve but fail due to personal reasons or social barriers.

However, I am completely sure that a good life plan and motivation can lead to success in spite of all problems that may occur. My Ten Year Life Plan helps me to specify my goals and to see the key moments and the most important steps which can lead me to success.

To create an engaging essay on future plans, it is essential to employ effective language features. Let's explore some key features to consider:

1. Persuasive Language

Questions related to Essay on Future Plans in Life

Two government crisis agencies that have assisted during times of emergency in the past are FEMA and The Department Of Homeland Security.

FEMA is actively contacting California Wildfire survivors to determine their housing needs and working diligently to identify additional short-term and long-term housing options.

The Department of Homeland Security has a vital mission: to secure the nation from the many threats we face. This dedication includes jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response. Their duties are wide-ranging, and their goal is keeping America safe.

The importance of having a prepared crisis response is the fact that in most sudden impact disasters, there is no reason why recovery planning should not begin the day after the event. Having made that point, however, it is important to note that time is socially necessary in recovery. Consultation must take place, and alternative strategies must be investigated. The aim should not be to “bounce back,” but to “bounce forward” to a more resilient society that is able to face up to future disasters by a better combination of resistance and adaptation than that which existed before the current impact. Recovery from a major disaster can take decades, and during that time socio-economic conditions will change, and so probably will environmental and hazard conditions. A disaster characterized by death, injury, psychological impairment, destruction, damage, and loss of economic activities, assets, and employment will engender a complex aftermath. In this there is much potential for wrong decisions, unless objectives are carefully set, procedures are clearly identified, and there is a consensus about how the process should take place.

One such example for FEMA and The National Guard in the California Wildfires is the fact that when a Major Disaster Declaration was officially announced on November 12, 2018. The National Guard helped with evacuation procedures when local infrastructure was damaged and severely compromised, they worked with the host government of California to arrange chartered and/or non-commercial transportation for U.S. citizens seeking to depart. This included transportation by air, land and sea.

In the case of FEMA, the agency has approved more than $12.7 million in federal assistance for survivors affected by wildfires in three California counties, Butte, Los Angeles and Ventura. The funding includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses. FEMA has joined with California to set up a disaster recovery center, a one-stop shop where residents affected by the fires can file insurance claims, obtain grants for food and shelter, and register for other federal aid. The agency has so far received more than 16,000 applications for assistance. About 550 FEMA staff members are on the ground helping local officials.

We cannot overlook the fact that there have been situations where we hoped the efficiency of these agencies were better. For example FEMA took on a larger role in Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria. In the case of Puerto Rico last year, Hurricane Maria destroyed most of the island’s infrastructure and the local government was overwhelmed by the size of the destruction. That left the agency to assume more responsibility, like delivering supplies, a job typically left to the states. Having the agency take on a larger role than what is mandated by the law “is never a good situation,” Brock Long, the agency’s administrator, told the Senate Homeland Security Committee in October 2017. “When FEMA is the first and primary responder, and the only responder for many weeks, we are never going to move as fast as anybody would like.”

When a government tries to boost their military and National Security a budget proposal may suggest massive cuts across the federal government to include governmental aid agencies.

The argument for is the fact that approved public repair projects are paid through the state from funding provided by FEMA and other participating federal agencies. Funding for these agencies is a must in order to help them accomplish their mission which is to help people before, during, and after disasters.

The Future of Human Resource Management in the Changing Workplace Environment

The workplace environment has undergone significant transformations in recent years. With the rise of technological advancements and globalization, the future of Human Resource Management (HRM) is expected to face numerous challenges and opportunities. In this essay, we will explore the key trends that are shaping HRM, discuss the changing nature of work, and analyze the evolving role of HR professionals in creating a competitive advantage for organizations.

Trends and Challenges in HRM

One of the major trends in HRM is the increasing focus on talent management. As organizations strive to attract and retain top talent, HR professionals are tasked with implementing effective recruitment, selection, and retention strategies. This involves leveraging technology to streamline processes and using data analytics to make informed decisions.

Another trend is the shift towards a more flexible and diverse workforce. With the emergence of remote work and gig economy, HRM needs to adapt to the changing expectations and preferences of employees. This includes implementing flexible work arrangements, promoting work-life balance, and fostering an inclusive organizational culture.

The changing nature of work also presents new challenges for HRM. Automation and artificial intelligence are transforming traditional job roles, requiring HR professionals to redefine job descriptions and develop reskilling and upskilling programs for employees. Additionally, the rise of virtual teams and global organizations necessitates effective cross-cultural communication and collaboration skills.

The Role of HR Professionals

HR professionals play a crucial role in helping organizations navigate through these changes. They need to be proactive in understanding emerging trends and be strategic partners in aligning HR practices with organizational goals. This includes developing and implementing talent development programs, fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, and promoting ethical practices.

Furthermore, HR professionals need to be proficient in leveraging technology and data analytics to drive HR decision-making. This involves using HR software systems to automate processes, analyzing data to identify key HR metrics, and leveraging predictive analytics to make data-driven HR interventions.

The future of HRM is dynamic and complex. It requires HR professionals to be adaptable, innovative, and strategic in their approach. By embracing emerging trends, leveraging technology, and focusing on talent management, HRM can contribute significantly to the success and growth of organizations in the changing workplace environment.

Interview questions answered: What are your future plans?

‘If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans’. Woody Allen was right, as the history has proven countless times. We can plan and dream and hope, yet we never have things completely under our control . A pandemic starts, or we get sick, or something positive happens–such as falling in love with a stranger, and suddenly we have to change our plans, or want to change them.

But what does it mean for your job interview? Should you philosophize about uncertainty of life , or should you come up with a precise and concrete answer , explaining what you want do in six month, three years, and ten years from now? You can actually succeed with both approaches to the question , as long as you explain your reasoning. As a rule of a thumb, however, you should try to connect your future plans with their company. This can mean internal promotion , but also having the same job for a foreseeable future, when there are no obvious career growth opportunities.

Let’s have a look at 7 sample answers to this interesting interview question. I tried to include in my selection answers for a variety of situations and jobs, including jobs nobody wants to have for longer than six months, as well as a couple of unconventional answers (philosophizing about vanity of planning in the uncertain world we live in), and also one answer that focuses primarily on goals and plans outside of work, and one answer for students (applying for a place in a study program instead of for a job). Go through them, think for a few seconds about each one, and pick one that resonates with you, and with the message you try to convey to the hiring managers.

7 sample answers to “What are your future plans?” interview question

  • To be honest, I do not have any big plans . I would enjoy working as a receptionist in a nice hotel with a great management, just like this one. My future plans are having a job I enjoy doing , finding good life-work balance, foster good relationships both at work and in my personal life, and simply enjoy every day as it comes and goes. Of course, I plan to continue working on my language skills , because I want to become better in my work. But when it comes to the job, I do not dream of changing my career, or of anything similar.
  • My future plans can be summed up in one sentence: to make a great career in this international corporation . Of course, I have some positions on my mind. A finance manager, later perhaps an FP&A director. As you can see I dare do dream big . At the same time, however, I realize I have to start here as an entry level financial analyst , learn the ins and outs of the job, prove my skills and dedication to work, and just then I can think of promotion and better jobs.
  • My future plans are yet to be decided . I am still young, and trying to find my calling . It is one of the reasons why I apply for a job with your company –because it is very big, you have many departments, offices overseas, and I feel that options are almost endless here, of course as long as you try hard and do not mind sacrificing something for your job . What exactly I will do, however, and where I will end up living, I cannot tell now. But I am excited about the future , and without a doubt I will come up with some tangible plans down the road.
  • Speaking honestly, I prefer to live in a present moment . Plans? God, I had many. You would not believe if I told you. But sometimes I wasn’t ready to pursue them , other times destiny stepped into my way . I learned the hard way that regardless of how hard we try, we never have things fully under our control. And it doesn’t matter whether we talk about personal life, or professional career. Future plans? They only bring me anxiety . Hence for the last few years I prefer living in the moment, focusing on the task at hand, and going with the flow . At the moment I try to get a job with your retail store . With my year of birth, however, no interview is easy anymore. I did what I could to prepare for this meeting. If I get the job, I will do my best every day, and let’s see what’s next. Living in the present is liberating .
  • I plan to start a family in five years time . It is my biggest dream as a woman–to have kids, and to be a good mother. Of course, we never know what the future will bring , and you need two people for starting a family. But this is my plan for the future, and I will try my best to pursue it. Speaking about my professional career , I’d be happy to work as a secretary until then, and then return back after maternity leave… Is there anything else you’d like to know about my future goals and plans?
  • I do not have any future plans . Had some in the past, things haven’t worked out, and I only ended up disappointed. In my opinion, when we fixate on something in the future –some object of our desire, be it another person, a job, or a nice thing we want to buy, such as a new house, our job and daily life becomes just a means to an end . We go to work and around our daily business just to achieve X and Y in the future. And that’s a recipe to depression and unhappiness. Why should we rob ourselves of the most precious thing we have–the present moment? I also learned that when we take care of the present, the future will take care of itself . What I try to convey here is that if I focus 100% on the task at hand, and do it well, and then repeat it again and again, there’s no doubt I will progress in my career . And that’s exactly what I try to do, and my way of living.
  • My future plan is to become a great nurse . It is something I have been dreaming of for years. Now I am just applying for a place at a nursing school, and I know I have a long road ahead of me. But I see the meaningful purpose in this job , know what I want to achieve in life, and I hope it will drive me forward in my studies, and help me overcome the challenges I will undoubtedly face while trying to earn my degree.

Show some excitement for the future, or for the present

Regardless of whether you opt for conventional approach, or philosophize about the vanity of planing in the 21st century, they should hear some excitement in your voice . And it doesn’t matter what job you are applying for, and how far it is from your “dream career”.

Of course, the main reason why we go to work is the need to earn money to live . That’s how it works in life, and it likely won’t be any otherwise in the future. If you want to avoid sleeping on the street , you have to create some value for others (in your job, or in your business)–unless you were born in a golden cage, but you probably wouldn’t be reading this article in such a case…

The point I try to convey here is that employers do not want to hire pessimistic and bitter employees , who do not see anything positive about their future. Show some excitement for what’s ahead , your job with them, good things awaiting you in your life outside of work, and so on.

Make sure to have realistic future plans

Anything is possible and we can dream big, but you should try to keep it realistic in your interviews . For sure you can become a CEO of Tesla or General Electric one day. But it perhaps isn’t the best idea talking about such plans while you apply for an entry level role in these companies, or for a kitchen helper job at McDonald’s. It is just too farfetched.

Think about a position you can realistically have in a year, three years, five years, ideally within their organization, and focus on it while narrating your future plans. And if you are not sure, you can always opt for answer no. 4 or no. 6 on my list, focusing on present, and explaining why you prefer to do so .

Ready to answer this question? I hope so! Do not forget to check also sample answers to other tricky interview questions:

  • How do you handle success?
  • What is your greatest fear?
  • Why should we hire you, and not one of the other applicants for the job?

Examples of Scholarship Essays for the “Career Goals” Question

Writing an essay is often the trickiest part of the scholarship application, not to mention the most time-consuming. However, the essay section also allows room for creativity and individuality. If you can communicate effectively, you can use the essay portion to stand out from the crowd. Let’s go over some tips for writing, as well as a couple of scholarship essay examples about career goals.

How to write a scholarship essay

At this point, you’ve probably gained plenty of experience writing papers for school. However, it may still take a couple of tries to nail the scholarship essay. Since scholarship teams often have to get through a lot of applications, it’s important to stand out while staying concise. Here are some simple guidelines for writing scholarship essays.

Take five minutes to brainstorm

Before you even start your essay, take some time to gather your thoughts. Think about what you’ll want the paper to focus on. Why did you choose to pursue your career path in the first place? Where do you want to be in five years? How would this scholarship help you further your studies and work toward your goals?

Once you’ve jotted down a few ideas, choose one or two to center your essay on. Identifying the focus of your paper, it’ll make it easier to keep your thoughts organized. In turn, it’ll make it easier for the reader to follow.

Stay within the word limit

Unlike the four-page essays that you may have written in English class, scholarship essays are often only a paragraph or two. In order to respect the selection committee’s time, be wary of going too far about the specified word count. A general rule of thumb is to stay within 20 words above or below the limit. That may entail a few rounds of edits to get the wording just right.

Stay positive!

Feel free to use part of your essay to talk about your life’s challenges. After all, the selection committee often wants to give the award to a candidate who needs it. However, make sure your anecdote doesn’t devolve into a sob story. If you’re going to bring up hardships you’ve endured, try to balance it by talking about how you’ve overcome them. By demonstrating resilience, you can show readers how you would use the scholarship to succeed in your current situation.

Leave time to proofread

Especially for a short scholarship essay, proofreading can take as little as 5-10 minutes. Still, it can be tempting to just hit “submit” after your first draft. However, being too impulsive can leave your essay riddled with typos and grammatical errors.

Try to avoid unnecessary mistakes by finishing your draft at least 24 hours before the scholarship deadline. That way, you can proofread it with fresh eyes before you submit it.

How to write a 100-word “career goals” essay.

When writing a 100-word essay, you’ll have to choose your content carefully. Since space is limited, you’ll want to identify the most important details to include beforehand.

First and foremost, make sure to clearly communicate your current pursuits. Talk about your academic and extracurricular activities related to your career goals. Additionally, it’s important to be specific about what you plan to do in the future. Then, if you have extra room, you can talk about how the scholarship will help you reach your goals.

My name is Alison MacBride, and I’m a sophomore at the University of Illinois. I’m currently pursuing a major in Journalism with a minor in Natural Resource Conservation. After completing my program, I plan to combine my areas of interest to become an environmental journalist.

During high school, I volunteered at an eco-conscious farm, where I learned about how our actions affect the earth. Since then, I’ve been set on raising awareness for the environment. This scholarship would go a long way in helping me finish my degree with the skills I need to investigate and report about critical issues.

How to write a 250-word “career goals” essay

For the 250-word essay, you can go into more detail. Give the readers some context by talking about how you first got interested in your chosen career. Storytelling can be especially effective in engaging your audience. Try to capture their attention by choosing one or two concrete examples and relaying them vividly.

Additionally, you can spend more time talking about the scholarship and how it’ll make a difference in your studies. Go into more detail about how and why you need the award, but remember to keep it positive! For more help, check out how to write a 250 word essay .

I first decided that I wanted to pursue a career in environmentalism in early high school. The summer after my freshman year, I joined a volunteer program at an eco-conscious farm in my community. In addition to helping out with the operations, I learned about current environmental issues related to farming and other consumer industries.

After learning about the agricultural industry’s impact on the planet, I was inspired to make a difference. The next year, I started a monthly earth magazine at my high school in which we broke down environmental issues and offered tips on how to be more eco-friendly. When I started college, I founded an on-campus publication with the same mission.

In recent years, I’ve been troubled to see how some media outlets downplay the gravity of issues like climate change and deforestation. I’ve admired reporters who publish trustworthy and comprehensible information about environmental issues, and I aim to follow in their footsteps.

When I entered college, I was initially concerned that I wouldn’t have enough money to finish my degree. Fortunately, I’ve been able to cover most of my tuition using merit scholarships and paychecks from my part-time job on campus. Receiving this scholarship would allow me more time to focus on acing my classes and pursuing environmental advocacy work on campus.

Start by reflecting on your past experiences and achievements that have led you to these goals. You could talk about a specific moment or event that inspired your ambition, and then explain how it has driven you ever since. This helps to show your passion and dedication towards your goals.

Next, focus on your present efforts to work towards these goals. You could mention any relevant extracurricular activities, internships, or projects you've been involved in that align with your future aspirations. This demonstrates your commitment and hard work.

Finally, discuss your future goals in a way that ties everything together and shows the admissions committee how you plan to make a positive impact in the world. Remember to be authentic and genuine in your writing, and don't be afraid to show some vulnerability. Good luck with your essay!

Key takeaways

  • Americans most commonly say they’d need to be living comfortably (56 percent), financially prepared for the future (44 percent), never worrying about money (41 percent) and living debt-free (41 percent) to consider themselves financially successful, according to a May 2024 Bankrate survey .
  • Most adults who have an idea of what financial success looks like for them say they haven’t yet achieved it (89 percent), according to the survey.
  • About two-thirds of adults with a vision for financial success (62 percent) think they’ll achieve it one day.
  • Nearly 30 percent of working women and 20 percent of working men don’t know how much they need to retire comfortably, according to a March 2024 Bankrate survey .

A family financial plan can steer your family toward financial success, helping you achieve your life goals and minimizing the sacrifices you need to make to reach them. But developing a financial plan can be complex, since you have so many factors to consider. On top of that, you’ll need to revise your plan over time, as your family’s needs and your life circumstances change.

“Building a family financial plan is an important step towards achieving your financial goals and ensuring the well-being of your family’s finances,” says Jordan Mangaliman, CEO of Goldline Financial Services in Fullerton, California.

Here’s how to create a family financial plan and what to watch out for.

A good financial plan helps your family effectively use its sources of income and balance those against current needs while anticipating future needs. The plan should help your family reach its short-term goals while preparing you to achieve your long-term goals as well.

1. Start with your family’s goals

The family financial plan begins with your goals, so you’ll want to understand what those are:

  • Do you want to retire early and only take on projects that you find compelling?
  • Do you want to simply build wealth for the future?
  • Do you want to fund a good life for your spouse and children?
  • Do you want to buy a dream house?

Whatever your goal, you need to identify it before you can start working toward it. Your financial plan is then structured around your goal and when you want to achieve it.

We all perceive financial success a little differently, and this can impact the goals you set for yourself. A recent Bankrate survey asked Americans to define what financial success looks like to them.

Most people valued comfort above all else at 56 percent, followed by being financially prepared for the future at 44 percent. Never worrying about money and living debt-free tied at 41 percent.

Others define success as having enough money to quit working, becoming a millionaire or owning a business. However you picture your “I’ve finally made it” moment, you’ll need a strong financial plan to make your vision a reality.

2. Build a budget to reach those goals

The “meat and potatoes” of a family financial plan is knowing your sources of income and your expenses. Among Americans who don’t consider themselves financially successful, 26 percent say they need to stick to a budget in order to achieve their goals, according to a recent Bankrate survey.

A good monthly budget will help you balance your near-term spending priorities and ensure that you’re saving some cash for the future, too. A budget is the base from which good financial decisions are made.

An effective budget helps you prioritize spending, so you’re not caught off-guard by upcoming expenses. It ensures that your wants don’t eclipse your needs and that you have money available when you do need it. A budget also helps you to avoid going into debt – at least unplanned debt – which can make your financial goals even more difficult to achieve.

The budget factors in your regular income and spending. That can help you prioritize which areas to focus on. You can track your spending to see what your typical spending patterns are and where your money goes each month. Then you can cut back on spending in certain areas in order to hit your financial goals.

As new priorities emerge – retirement savings, funding a child’s education, buying a home – you’ll need to adjust your budget to factor them in, or risk racking up high-cost debt. The budget becomes the place where you financially reconcile these competing priorities into a plan.

Here’s how to make a monthly budget and some resources for organizing it. You could also try a zero-based budget model to ensure every dollar has a purpose and is put toward saving, investing or essentials.

3. Build that emergency fund

It can be easy to overlook an emergency fund, especially if it’s tough to balance your income and spending. But the emergency fund is a great way to protect yourself and keep moving toward your long-term goals, because it can help you avoid having to take drastic measures.

“Establishing an emergency fund helps your family pay for unexpected expenses like a medical emergency or car repair,” says Mangaliman. “Aim to save at least six months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid and easily accessible account.”

The emergency fund should be a line item in your budget at least until you have that money saved up. This money is protection for you and your family’s financial goals, helping to ensure that some short short-term issue doesn’t derail your long-term plans.

Now is a great time to set up a high-yield savings account for your emergency fund.

4. Invest for the future

It can be easy to let your near-term expenses crowd out investing for the future, but you’ll want to be sure that you’re building for your financial future, too:

  • Retirement accounts: It can be easy to overlook these accounts, especially when you’re young, but don’t do it. Time is your biggest ally in retirement saving, so even starting small is important. Many employers offer a retirement plan such as a 401(k) or 403(b) that has various tax advantages, and many will offer you matching money if you contribute to it. In addition, everyone with earned income has access to an IRA , which allows you to invest on a tax-advantaged basis, too.
  • 529 accounts: If you have children or plan on having them, then you’ll want to consider how to pay for their college education, and a 529 plan can help you do that . It lets you invest on a tax-advantaged basis to pay for education expenses and even student loans.
  • Taxable accounts: Beyond just specialized accounts, you can also put money away in general taxable accounts such as a brokerage account. The best brokerage accounts let you invest in potential high-return assets such as stocks and stock funds, and many also offer an attractive return on your cash, too.

Factor your investments in the future into your budget, so the money will be there when you need it. Investing for the future is one of the most difficult parts of the financial planning process, so it’s a great time to call in an expert to help you build this part of your plan.

5. Protect yourself with insurance

Life insurance is another element that can help your family keep moving toward its financial goals even in the event of a family member’s passing. Like the emergency fund, life insurance helps you avoid having to take drastic measures such as assuming high-cost debt.

Life insurance “is an important requirement when there are dependents, including children or a spouse,” says Stuart Boxenbaum, CFP, president, Statewide Financial Group in Jupiter, Florida.

But many families may slip up when it comes to getting enough coverage.

“The simple rule is to have the breadwinner’s total income multiplied by a minimum five years, or up to 10, for the death benefit,” says Boxenbaum. “If earnings are $100,000 a year, the minimum death benefit should be $500,000, [or it] could be up to $1 million.”

6. Revise your plan

It can be easy to make a plan and then not follow up as your life changes. And it will change. You’ll achieve some of your goals, children will be born and other people will pass out of your life. And those changes mean that you need to adjust your family’s financial plan in response.

“When you accomplish your goals on time or even ahead of time like paying off debt, you can repurpose that cash flow towards your next financial objective,” says Mangaliman. “Parents may also need to downsize their living situation when their kids are no longer living in their home, thus updating the family’s financial plan.”

“However, unforeseen circumstances like critical health events or a decrease in pay can delay reaching certain objectives, and a family financial plan should be updated accordingly,” he says.

“Conducting an annual or semi-annual review is important,” says Boxenbaum.

Even if the result of that regular review is just “no changes,” the review will keep you thinking about your financial plan and how it might need to be adjusted over time.

Where family financial plans go wrong

Crafting a family financial plan is not easy because you have so many different variables to consider. Here are some common places where you could trip up:

  • Lack of flexibility: Your financial plan should have some flexibility built in, especially around the budget. So build in room for expenses that could exceed the norm, such as winter heating bills or the unexpected repair. Saving too much never ends up being a problem, and it’s better to err in this direction than spending too much.
  • Not reviewing the plan regularly: Reviewing your plan regularly ensures that you’re working with the most up-to-date numbers, both for your income and expenses. It also allows you to adjust your budget to changes such as a new child and that child’s future education expenses, for example.
  • Not calling in an expert when needed: Building an adequate financial plan can be complex. “The best place to start is by calling in a financial advisor that works with families and individuals to help you do calculations,” says Boxenbaum. “A professional advisor likely does these types of cases frequently.”
  • Maintaining high-cost debt: High-cost debt can really crimp your lifestyle, and it can get worse over time if you don’t handle it. “Keeping credit card balances and other debts can feel like the norm, but it doesn’t have to be,” says Mangaliman. “Being intentional about paying off high-interest debt accelerates your family’s financial success.”
  • Not reviewing insurance: Your insurance needs can change over time, as your life changes. Review your coverage to be sure that you have what you need as well as that you’re not paying for coverage that you don’t need.
  • Listening to unqualified advisors: Social media is full of unqualified people offering advice. Be very careful who you take advice from, and understand the best practices.

Creating a financial plan can be overwhelming, but you can call in pros to help you get it done.

“Financial planners can give you support and personalized guidance on how to most efficiently reach your family’s financial goals,” says Mangaliman. “It’s important to seek a financial professional who can help you with a custom overall strategy instead of pitching a single product or service.”

Bankrate’s financial advisor matching tool can help you identify advisors who can help you build a financial plan for your family.

Bottom line

Building a financial plan can be a lot of work, but it can help you and your family reach your financial goals. But start with your family’s budget and work outward from there, calling in experts where you need them to help you make smart decisions and stay on track.

Watch these adorable twin babies meet each other for the first time

When a pair of twin babies finally noticed each other, it was love at first sight. “My twin boys discovering each other for the first time,” Meagan Garr, a wedding videographer in Ocala, Florida, wrote on a TikTok video of her 4-month-old sons Cooper and Olsen.

The video with 13 million views shows the fraternal twin brothers lying next each other having a non-verbal conversation. They’re smiling and staring into each other’s eyes, babbling, touching arms and very delighted with their mirror image.

Meagan tells TODAY.com that she recorded the interaction after trying to get her babies to acknowledge each other’s presence.

“I have a friend whose twins are 6 months old and she told me, ‘They just noticed each other.' I was like, ‘That’s a milestone — what?’” says Meagan.

The twins already react to their older brothers Jackson, 6, and Lucas, 3, says Meagan, but hadn’t acknowledged each other just yet. “It’s sort of like, ‘You’re my arm, you’re always there,’” she says.

This week, Meagan took photos of the twins, trying to catch them smile at the same time. While sorting through the pictures, she glanced up to see her boys smiling at each other.

“It was a candid moment, which made my heart so happy,” she says.

It's a party of five for the Garr family, thanks to twins Cooper and Olsen.

Meagan has wanted twins for a long time.

“When I was five, I told my mom, ‘I’m going to have twin boys when I grow up,’” she says. “Then I had my first baby and said, ‘Just kidding, one is really hard.’”

When Meagan and her husband Andrew found out they were expecting, she told her sons right away.

Although twins don’t run in either family, her oldest son Jackson knew.

“He said, ‘I want two babies,” says Meagan. During the first trimester, Jackson was convinced he was going to have twin brothers. According to Meagan, “He wasn’t even fazed” by the ultrasound results.

Cooper and Olsen were born premature at approximately 33 weeks and stayed in the NICU for their first month. Cooper weighed 3 pounds, 14 ounces (and was nicknamed ‘Mini Cooper”) and Olsen weighed five pounds, one ounce.

Meagan says she’d love for her twins to interact more.

“We’ve had a few moments,” she says, “if they’re both in a good mood and next to each other.”

Reinventing search with a new AI-powered Microsoft Bing and Edge, your copilot for the web

To empower people to unlock the joy of discovery, feel the wonder of creation and better harness the world’s knowledge, today we’re improving how the world benefits from the web by reinventing the tools billions of people use every day, the search engine and the browser.

Today, we’re launching an all new, AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser, available in preview now at Bing.com , to deliver better search, more complete answers, a new chat experience and the ability to generate content. We think of these tools as an AI copilot for the web.

“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web.”

There are 10 billion search queries a day, but we estimate half of them go unanswered. That’s because people are using search to do things it wasn’t originally designed to do. It’s great for finding a website, but for more complex questions or tasks too often it falls short.

The new Bing and Edge – Your copilot for the web

We have brought together search, browsing and chat into one unified experience you can invoke from anywhere on the web, delivering:

  • Better search. The new Bing gives you an improved version of the familiar search experience, providing more relevant results for simple things like sports scores, stock prices and weather, along with a new sidebar that shows more comprehensive answers if you want them.
  • Complete answers. Bing reviews results from across the web to find and summarize the answer you’re looking for. For example, you can get detailed instructions for how to substitute eggs for another ingredient in a cake you are baking right in that moment, without scrolling through multiple results.
  • A new chat experience. For more complex searches – such as for planning a detailed trip itinerary or researching what TV to buy – the new Bing offers new, interactive chat. The chat experience empowers you to refine your search until you get the complete answer you are looking for by asking for more details, clarity and ideas – with links available so you can immediately act on your decisions.
  • A creative spark. There are times when you need more than an answer – you need inspiration. The new Bing can generate the content to help you. It can help you write an email, create a 5-day itinerary for a dream vacation to Hawaii, with links to book your travel and accommodations, prep for a job interview or create a quiz for trivia night. The new Bing also cites all its sources, so you’re able to see links to the web content it references.
  • New Microsoft Edge experience. We’ve updated the Edge browser with new AI capabilities and a new look, and we’ve added two new functionalities: Chat and compose. With the Edge Sidebar, you can ask for a summary of a lengthy financial report to get the key takeaways – and then use the chat function to ask for a comparison to a competing company’s financials and automatically put it in a table. You can also ask Edge to help you compose content, such as a LinkedIn post, by giving it a few prompts to get you started. After that, you can ask it to help you update the tone, format and length of the post. Edge can understand the web page you’re on and adapts accordingly.

Reinventing search with AI

The new Bing experience is a culmination of four technical breakthroughs:

  • Next-generation OpenAI model . We’re excited to announce the new Bing is running on a new, next-generation OpenAI large language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT and customized specifically for search. It takes key learnings and advancements from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 – and it is even faster, more accurate and more capable.
  • Microsoft Prometheus model . We have developed a proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model that allows us to best leverage its power. We call this collection of capabilities and techniques the Prometheus model. This combination gives you more relevant, timely and targeted results, with improved safety.

What’s the Israel-Palestine conflict about? A simple guide

It’s killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions. And its future lies in its past. We break it down.

Nakba 1948 people fleeing

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced many millions of people and has its roots in a colonial act carried out more than a century ago.

With Israel declaring war on the Gaza Strip after an unprecedented attack by the armed Palestinian group Hamas on Saturday, the world’s eyes are again sharply focused on what might come next.

Hamas fighters have killed more than 800 Israelis in assaults on multiple towns in southern Israel. In response, Israel has launched a bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 500 Palestinians. It has mobilised troops along the Gaza border, apparently in preparation for a ground attack. And on Monday, it announced a “total blockade” of the Gaza Strip, stopping the supply of food, fuel and other essential commodities to the already besieged enclave in an act that under international law amounts to a war crime.

But what unfolds in the coming days and weeks has its seed in history.

For decades, Western media outlets, academics, military experts and world leaders have described the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as intractable, complicated and deadlocked.

Here’s a simple guide to break down one of the world’s longest-running conflicts:

What was the Balfour Declaration?

  • More than 100 years ago, on November 2, 1917, Britain’s then-foreign secretary, Arthur Balfour, wrote a letter addressed to Lionel Walter Rothschild, a figurehead of the British Jewish community.
  • The letter was short – just 67 words – but its contents had a seismic effect on Palestine that is still felt to this day.
  • It committed the British government to “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and to facilitating “the achievement of this object”. The letter is known as the Balfour Declaration .
  • In essence, a European power promised the Zionist movement a country where Palestinian Arab natives made up more than 90 percent of the population.
  • A British Mandate was created in 1923 and lasted until 1948. During that period, the British facilitated mass Jewish immigration – many of the new residents were fleeing Nazism in Europe – and they also faced protests and strikes. Palestinians were alarmed by their country’s changing demographics and British confiscation of their lands to be handed over to Jewish settlers.

What happened during the 1930s?

  • Escalating tensions eventually led to the Arab Revolt, which lasted from 1936 to 1939.
  • In April 1936, the newly formed Arab National Committee called on Palestinians to launch a general strike, withhold tax payments and boycott Jewish products to protest British colonialism and growing Jewish immigration.
  • The six-month strike was brutally repressed by the British, who launched a mass arrest campaign and carried out punitive home demolitions , a practice that Israel continues to implement against Palestinians today.
  • The second phase of the revolt began in late 1937 and was led by the Palestinian peasant   resistance movement, which targeted British forces and colonialism.
  • By the second half of 1939, Britain had massed 30,000 troops in Palestine. Villages were bombed by air, curfews imposed, homes demolished, and administrative detentions and summary killings were widespread.
  • In tandem, the British collaborated with the Jewish settler community and formed armed groups and a British-led “counterinsurgency force” of Jewish fighters named the Special Night Squads.
  • Within the Yishuv, the pre-state settler community, arms were secretly imported and weapons factories established to expand the Haganah, the Jewish paramilitary that later became the core of the Israeli army.
  • In those three years of revolt, 5,000 Palestinians were killed, 15,000 to 20,000 were wounded and 5,600 were imprisoned.

What was the UN partition plan?

  • By 1947, the Jewish population had ballooned to 33 percent of Palestine, but they owned only 6 percent of the land.
  • The United Nations adopted Resolution 181, which called for the partition of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states.
  • The Palestinians rejected the plan because it allotted about 55 percent of Palestine to the Jewish state, including most of the fertile coastal region.
  • At the time, the Palestinians owned 94 percent of historic Palestine and comprised 67 percent of its population.

The 1948 Nakba, or the ethnic cleansing of Palestine

  • Even before the British Mandate expired on May 14, 1948, Zionist paramilitaries were already embarking on a military operation to destroy Palestinian towns and villages to expand the borders of the Zionist state that was to be born.
  • In April 1948, more than 100 Palestinian men, women and children were killed in the village of Deir Yassin on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
  • That set the tone for the rest of the operation, and from 1947 to 1949, more than 500 Palestinian villages, towns and cities were destroyed in what Palestinians refer to as the Nakba , or “catastrophe” in Arabic.
  • An estimated 15,000 Palestinians were killed, including in dozens of massacres.
  • The Zionist movement captured 78 percent of historic Palestine. The remaining 22 percent was divided into what are now the occupied West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip.
  • An estimated 750,000 Palestinians were forced out of their homes.
  • Today their descendants live as six million refugees in 58 squalid camps throughout Palestine and in the neighbouring countries of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt.
  • On May 15, 1948, Israel announced its establishment.
  • The following day, the first Arab-Israeli war began and fighting ended in January 1949 after an armistice between Israel and Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.
  • In December 1948, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 194, which calls for the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

The years after the Nakba

  • At least 150,000 Palestinians remained in the newly created state of Israel and lived under a tightly controlled military occupation for almost 20 years before they were eventually granted Israeli citizenship.
  • Egypt took over the Gaza Strip, and in 1950, Jordan began its administrative rule over the West Bank.
  • In 1964, the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) was formed, and a year later, the Fatah political party was established.

The Naksa, or the Six-Day War and the settlements

  • On June 5, 1967, Israel occupied the rest of historic Palestine, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Syrian Golan Heights and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula during the Six-Day War against a coalition of Arab armies.
  • For some Palestinians, this led to a second forced displacement, or Naksa, which means “setback” in Arabic.
  • In December 1967, the Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine was formed. Over the next decade, a series of attacks and plane hijackings by leftist groups drew the world’s attention to the plight of the Palestinians.
  • Settlement construction began in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. A two-tier system was created with Jewish settlers afforded all the rights and privileges of being Israeli citizens whereas Palestinians had to live under a military occupation that discriminated against them and barred any form of political or civic expression.

The first Intifada 1987-1993

  • The first Palestinian Intifada erupted in the Gaza Strip in December 1987 after four Palestinians were killed when an Israeli truck collided with two vans carrying Palestinian workers.
  • Protests spread rapidly to the West Bank with young Palestinians throwing stones at Israeli army tanks and soldiers.
  • It also led to the establishment of the Hamas movement, an off-shoot of the Muslim Brotherhood that engaged in armed resistance against the Israeli occupation.
  • The Israeli army’s heavy-handed response was encapsulated by the “Break their Bones” policy advocated by then-Defence Minister Yitzhak Rabin. It included summary killings, closures of universities, deportations of activists and destruction of homes.
  • The Intifada was primarily carried out by young people and was directed by the Unified National Leadership of the Uprising, a coalition of Palestinian political factions committed to ending the Israeli occupation and establishing Palestinian independence.
  • In 1988, the Arab League recognised the PLO as the sole representative of the Palestinian people.
  • The Intifada was characterised by popular mobilisations, mass protests, civil disobedience, well-organised strikes and communal cooperatives.
  • According to the Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem, 1,070 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during the Intifada, including 237 children. More than 175,000 Palestinians were arrested.
  • The Intifada also prompted the international community to search for a solution to the conflict.

The Oslo years and the Palestinian Authority

  • The Intifada ended with the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 and the formation of the Palestinian Authority (PA), an interim government that was granted limited self-rule in pockets of the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
  • The PLO recognised Israel on the basis of a two-state solution and effectively signed agreements that gave Israel control of 60 percent of the West Bank, and much of the territory’s land and water resources.
  • The PA was supposed to make way for the first elected Palestinian government running an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with its capital in East Jerusalem, but that has never happened.
  • Critics of the PA view it as a corrupt subcontractor to the Israeli occupation that collaborates closely with the Israeli military in clamping down on dissent and political activism against Israel.
  • In 1995, Israel built an electronic fence and concrete wall around the Gaza Strip, snapping interactions between the split Palestinian territories.

The second Intifada

  • The second Intifada began on September 28, 2000, when Likud opposition leader Ariel Sharon made a provocative visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound with thousands of security forces deployed in and around the Old City of Jerusalem.
  • Clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces killed five Palestinians and injured 200 over two days.
  • The incident sparked a widespread armed uprising. During the Intifada, Israel caused unprecedented damage to the Palestinian economy and infrastructure.
  • Israel reoccupied areas governed by the Palestinian Authority and began construction of a separation wall that along with rampant settlement construction, destroyed Palestinian livelihoods and communities.
  • Settlements are illegal under international law, but over the years, hundreds of thousands of Jewish settlers have moved to colonies built on stolen Palestinian land. The space for Palestinians is shrinking as settler-only roads and infrastructure slice up the occupied West Bank, forcing Palestinian cities and towns into bantustans, the isolated enclaves for Black South Africans that the country’s former apartheid regime created.
  • At the time the Oslo Accords were signed, just over 110,000 Jewish settlers lived in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Today, the figure is more than 700,000 living on more than 100,000 hectares (390sq miles) of land expropriated from the Palestinians.

The Palestinian division and the Gaza blockade

  • PLO leader Yasser Arafat died in 2004, and a year later, the second Intifada ended, Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip were dismantled, and Israeli soldiers and 9,000 settlers left the enclave.
  • A year later, Palestinians voted in a general election for the first time.
  • Hamas won a majority. However, a Fatah-Hamas civil war broke out, lasting for months, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians.
  • Hamas expelled Fatah from the Gaza Strip, and Fatah – the main party of the Palestinian Authority – resumed control of parts of the West Bank.
  • In June 2007, Israel imposed a land, air and naval blockade on the Gaza Strip, accusing Hamas of “terrorism”.

Gaza

The wars on the Gaza Strip

  • Israel has launched four protracted military assaults on Gaza: in 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2021. Thousands of Palestinians have been killed, including many children , and tens of thousands of homes, schools and office buildings have been destroyed.
  • Rebuilding has been next to impossible because the siege prevents construction materials, such as steel and cement, from reaching Gaza.
  • The 2008 assault involved the use of internationally banned weaponry, such as phosphorus gas.
  • In 2014, over a span of 50 days, Israel killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, including 1,462 civilians and close to 500 children.
  • During the  assault , called Operation Protective Edge by the Israelis, about 11,000 Palestinians were wounded, 20,000 homes were destroyed and half a million people displaced .
