Why I became a music teacher: my students make me a better musician

I started learning violin when I was around four years old. I'm a fifth generation violinist in my family. So playing the violin is part of my family history and I felt that keenly even as a little boy.

My own violin teaching was really outside of school. My dad found me an incredible teacher, Warren Jacobs , an Australian who taught mainly in Edinburgh and Glasgow. I do remember loving playing the violin from a very early age.

Even when I was a small boy I wanted to play music with other people. The National Children's Orchestra (NCO) had a massive impact on my life and it's so amazing to see it have the same affect on children now. Children aged eight to 14 are auditioned to find the finest musical talent in the UK. They come together at residential courses three times a year, at Easter, Christmas and the summer. As a boy it was so incredible to find and play with people who were as driven and passionate as I was.

I didn't set out to become a teacher, I just knew I wanted to play the violin. I read music at Cambridge and then the Birmingham Conservatoir studies in violin.

I've never been taught how to teach, it's something that has evolved over time. I always did a lot of informal teaching, but by the time I was 21, teaching violin had become a big part of my life.

It's quite normal for classical musicians to teach alongside playing, as a way to make some money. When I'd finished my post grad at Birmingham I seriously needed to think about how I would make a living. I was a professional violin player but didn't have a full time salary. More formal teaching was the obvious thing, but I found I just enjoyed it so much. A lot of performers teach because they have to. For me it was always very different, it was a pleasure not just a necessity.

Some of the greatest violin teachers I've met have spoken about how much we learn about ourselves as a player from teaching and that's certainly true for me. I've always felt my teaching improves my performing and helps me to have an intelligent approach to my own practice. I literally don't have any time to waste so I've got to get things done efficiently.

I think I'm quite a natural communicator and I'm not a didactic teacher; my technique is to treat all my students as individuals and help them explore and be inspired.

To begin with I taught privately. I've started children off learning to play the violin at the age of four. That's something I really enjoy, to be there right at the start rather than 'rescuing' someone who may have been taught less well. It's incredible when you see talent at a really early age, but at the same time less naturally talented students can do really well with good teaching

As my interest in teaching grew and I began to get regular freelance work with all different types of schools. I taught violin at Lichfield Cathedral school one or two days a week and worked on a fantastic scheme with Birmingham City Council music service where I taught group violin lessons in a number of state schools. There was even funding for one-to-one teaching if you came across a real talent. All the while I was performing all over the country.

Then I got married and my wife got tired of my driving all over the country all the time. So when the head of strings job at Uppingham School came up, I applied. Of course I'd had interviews for my freelance music teaching but this was a really serious process. I was so delighted to get the job three years ago and I'm enjoying it so much.

Before I was mainly teaching one-to-one violin but now I've got a proper job I'm also involved in organising musical events and of course I'm involved in pastoral care of our students as well.

My tip on keeping students inspired is to give them the responsibility for their music. I show them how to make their instrument sound as good as possible as early as possible. The target they have is to focus on making a brilliant sound and I try to empower them to teach themselves – to me that is the definition of being a successful music teacher.

It's really wonderful to be involved in music teaching. I so enjoy watching young musicians and young people develop. I think every child should have the opportunity to learn an instrument – and there have been countless studies on how young people who are involved in classical music do better in their life and learning especially if they are involved in orchestras and can develop all that fantastic teamwork and ability to trust and interact with each other.

The National Children's Orchestra (NCO) has remained a large force in my life. I now teach and conduct courses as well as auditioning for them in my spare time. It's a real focus to go into state schools and identify the really talented children and we work closely with music hubs and services to do that. There are members of the NCO from all backgrounds – if we find the talent funding is there to make it happen. Last year we had a record number of more than a thousand kids auditioning, and there are 600 to 700 members of the orchestra, although not all of them play in the national concerts. So if music teachers reading this have discovered real talent in their students then they should get in touch with the NCO .

I'm so happy teaching and performing. I want to do more of the same and want to keep improving myself. That's very much a musician's mindset.

Alex Laing is head of strings at Uppingham school in Leicestershire. The National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain are celebrating their 35th anniversary this year with a series of concerts including the Main Orchestra at the Barbican on Saturday 27 July.

How To Stay Motivated and Ambitious As a Musician

essay on my ambition in life to become a musician

It is quite normal for any ambitious and dedicated individual to get demotivated if the expected results disappoint. You’ve put in all the hard work and effort; followed the perfect recipe for success, and you constantly get knocked down by gate-keepers or you’re not getting the support that you desperately need.

Today we’ll have a closer look at the causes of declining motivation so that we can rather prevent instead of recover. Then we’ll check what we can do to stay motivated and not lose the burning fire to reach our full potential as musicians.

What are the Causes of Declining Motivation for Musicians?

Discovering the causes of declining motivation is a reflective process that each artist needs to find for themselves.

It hangs together with not setting realistic goals for you to reach, and you’ll just have to readjust in order for you to set more achievable goals.

Here are the causes that often contribute to musicians becoming demotivated:

Lack of Paid Bookings

Being a musician costs lots of money. You probably don’t mind spending money on the most basic pieces of equipment that you might need, but taking into consideration all of the running expenses you’ll have to go on is really demotivating when you don’t feel that there’s something coming back at you.

Especially in the beginning when you are making a name for yourself, this could get out of hand:

  • Transportation costs
  • Servicing your gear
  • Band room hire
  • Printing merchandise and other band necessities
  • Recording/mixing/mastering expenses

These ongoing expenses can shorten your patience for success when you really should focus on writing and creating music and performing live.

My suggested solution: Make peace with the fact that you are investing that money in your musical dream. Make a budget per month and check that you don’t go over the limit so that you can feel comfortable having set out the funds for your hobby and to follow your dreams.

Songwriters Block

The lack of inspiration is often a reason that artists get demotivated and lose their passion. Especially when the factors that motivated and inspired you aren’t there anymore.

Of course, there are various reasons that contribute to songwriter’s block. For in-depth solutions , scan through my article Modern Methods to Avoid Songwriter Block .

Lack of Personal Support Structure

We all need a basis of support in life, especially for the challenging and testing phases. This is often your inner circle of trusted people like your family or friends where you feel that you can talk about your worries and stress, and where you can have a go-to person who motivates you when you feel down.

Without a structure like this, we get demotivated very easily and start with doubting ourselves.

My suggested solution: Recognise those in your inner circle and make sure that you are able to visit them on a weekly basis. Being around the ones you love will immediately make you feel more confident and supported.

So you’ve spent hours drafting hundreds of emails to radio stations, performance venues, event organisers and festivals, just to either get negative responses or no response at all?

You are definitely not alone. That happens to everyone that’s trying to get a foot in the door.

The positive thing that we don’t realise is that you are promoting yourself in the process.

Not getting a reaction does not mean that you are being unnoticed. De Wet Kruger

It happened to me quite often where we’ve reached out to so many people, that when you finally perform at this festival or venue, the management was already well acquainted with our music and style.

Of course, I had to ask them why we never got a chance in the past. And often their answers were similar: That they wanted to observe our ambition and growth from a distance.

It made sense to me since the gatekeepers are bringing in artists that bring more listeners to them.

Even though it contributed to my demotivation; ambition, longevity and perseverance is the key to success here.

Performing In an Empty Venue

Performing to nobody but the venue staff after you’ve done all you can to invite special guests and fill the venue, is not only embarrassing but also very demotivating.

This is probably the one area that got me the worst. You feel so let down after getting the opportunity to play and entertain, but it ends up being a band rehearsal.

It happened quite often with my band and we started to make jokes about going to band practice and gigging is the same thing for us.

In the end, I’m not so sure if we set our goals accurately.

My suggested solution is to find buddy bands to perform together and share each other’s fans. In this way, you can easily occupy an audience for 3 hours, fill the venue and make new fans for yourself. The advantages are limitless.

You can even organise your own band night if you’d like: You can find The Guide to Organise an Amateur Band Night for Charity right here for free!

Unproductive Band Practices

Band practices should have a balance between being goal-driven and each band member getting what they came for. If people go home feeling like it was a waste of time, they will reconsider coming back again for another session.

It is not useful if your smoke break turns into a 30-minute time waste break because the guys have a lot to catch up on.

Set realistic and achievable goals to reach for each practice, and divide these into sessions. People commit to a structure quite easily when they know what needs to be achieved. It’s as if we feel like our lives can’t go on without completing the to-do list.

I set up a list of 7 Tips for Productive Band Practices for you to follow and stay productive.

Band Conflict

All bands have their awkward moments where there might be a vibe in the band room and there are some unsaid things still hanging in the air.

If these things continue to be silent, you’ll sit with a bigger problem in the near future. When people clash, they are automatically less motivated and they avoid anything that has to do with whatever is irritating them.

My recommended solution is to offer support and request it be solved privately, and if this is not possible, perhaps with a mediator.

Check out my article called 9 Steps to Deal with Conflict in Your Band which could be useful for your current situation.

Growing Competition

It is a headache seeing more and more artists saturating the market, and you are still stuck in first gear.

The best that you can do is to keep your head down, build your setlist and song repertoire and keep performing as much as you can. Very often your turn for success is right around the corner if you set your goals correctly.

essay on my ambition in life to become a musician

Stubborn Gatekeepers

Even if your friend is a gatekeeper, they will still be challenging to convince, especially for beginner artists.

We had a friend at a radio station who had the afternoon drive show, but he could never help us get playlisted. We then tried another tactic, and that was to use him as our own personal MC at gigs.

It made quite an impact when a celebrity MC called you to the stage during a battle of the bands or band nights. It definitely made us progress as a band, but we still didn’t manage to win the Battles 😀

My recommended solution: Be persistent, continue to network, and keep on building your band CV. Your band CV, or your EPK, presents a record of your achievements which reflects your growth and hard work.

What Can I Do To Stay Motivated and Ambitious?

Let’s look at how we can manage to stay motivated and see constant growth and progress that will keep us motivated:

Set Realistic Goals

The key to staying motivated is to have realistic goals. This keeps the band a unit and makes everyone work together like a machine. Especially when each band member has their own tasks to focus on.

There should be long-term and short-term goals to achieve. If your wish is to record a demo in a year, then book the studio and start saving money, or find an alternative way. Just make the plans and pull it through as a unit.

My article about Goal Setting for Bands and Artists would be a helpful read if you’d like some guidance.

Build a Musician Community

Once a week I meet up with a musician buddy and we share ideas and talk about the daily frustrations. Very often we have solutions for each other and we also try to open doors for each other where we can.

Imagine having a whole community or network of these people helping and supporting each other. Surround yourself with the people that will drive you forward, not pull you back.

You need to be released from the factors holding you back and spend time with the positive and optimistic people who will keep your glass filled with ideas, opportunity and forward momentum.

Create a Productivity Routine

The basis of being motivated is actually knowing what you need to do.

Having a weekly routine of all the aspects that you need to cover during the week helps you to head forward and get the job done.

Find the 10-15 elements that you will need to focus on per week and schedule it throughout your week so that you can do something productive each day to continuously take invisible steps forward.

You’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll see success in a few months’ time.

essay on my ambition in life to become a musician

Being out and mingling with others in the industry helps you to deal with difficult or demotivating periods. You will gain new contacts and quickly realise that others also have similar struggles.

I loved attending random band nights and rock shows just to chat with the organisers, sound engineers, artists and fans.

If you are interested in learning the skills to network and perhaps find an opening performance for a successful artist, check out my article called Landing an Opening Gig for a Succesful Band .

Have More Lines In the Water

Don’t only rely on one specific source for your success, but spread them across various areas and industries, and take on as many opportunities as you can possibly get your hands on.

The industry is huge and there’s always space for one more, as long as you keep your head up, stay positive and optimistic, and get the job done.

Every day you wait longer is another day lost, so make sure you try to do your bit each day to move the needle forward.

The dream started during a school tour at the age of 15 years old. One that might take a long time to reach. De Wet was 16 years old when he got his first bass guitar as a gift from his dad. The guitar was found, hidden under boxes. As if it was waiting for its owner to come by and pick him up. He practiced every day to improve and to teach his fingers to dance to the music. After finishing high school, he played in various bands where he collected valuable experience, before being signed by a record label as an upcoming band. He reached success at age 22 when he released two albums with his band, which also included televised music videos for publicity. By age 24, he co-started management, artist promotion, and booking agency for successful and upcoming musical acts.

What It Really Takes to Become a Musician

Humans are hardwired to be musical. musicianship develops from several factors..

Posted February 11, 2021 | Reviewed by Matt Huston

Most people who are musically active as listeners and concertgoers possess little skill as music-makers themselves. Very aware of this divergence, many express regret at not learning more about music earlier in life when they could have. Some describe being musical as a dream that was never realistically attainable because they were not born with the innate talent required. Can all children become musical? How can we know who has “what it takes” to become a musician?

Colin Maynard/Unsplash

Psychological research has illuminated much about human musical development. Because human beings, as a species, are "hardwired” to be musical, advanced musicality is best understood as a skill set that is acquired as the result of a number of powerful contributing factors.

Admittedly, this flies in the face of a commonly held view that musical ability is rare within the general population. According to this view, only a few talented individuals can become musicians, and so a key task for the music profession is the early detection of talent so that it may be properly nurtured.

I would suggest that this orientation is quite archaic. From the perspective of scientific psychology, there are many reasons to doubt the notion of purely inborn musical talent and to challenge attempts to identify it. While some may believe greater musical skill is the result of being born with a brain well suited for music, an alternative explanation is that a different (more musical) brain results from engagement in music activity.

This latter explanation finds support from brain research. For example, differences in structural neuroplasticity between highly trained pianists and nonmusicians have been linked to their sustained musical training; furthermore, the pianist structural brain characteristics are more pronounced in those who began piano study early in childhood , as compared to those with a later onset of piano playing (Vaquero et al., 2016). There are many studies showing how the brain is altered by experience (Kolb, 2018).

Rather than accepting musical ability as a special endowment received by the gifted few, it is better understood to be a set of musical skills that people develop. Research has identified a number of factors that are powerful contributors to musical skill acquisition. It can be a difficult and overly academic exercise to explicate the many factors that contribute to the development of musicality, but the broad categories in play include physiological traits, opportunity/support, and learning.

McPherson, Davidson, & Faulker (2012) have emphasized the transactional nature of musical development. When people develop to be particularly musical, it derives from the “alignment of key and often wide-ranging transactions—across social, biological, psychological, and environmental spheres—that create promotive conditions for significant musical growth” (p. 183).

Physiological Traits

Individual differences in physiological human characteristics constrain the development of musicality. Some physical traits, such as muscularity and motor control, affect musical development, including performance skills on musical instruments.

Physiological traits also include perceptual capabilities. In a plainly evident example, children born deaf will surely come to understand music very differently from those born with typical hearing. It also has been suggested that children whose neurological makeup includes a particular sensitivity to sound may be especially attentive to and attracted to musical stimuli in their environments; such a trait would likely aid musical development (McPherson & Williamon, 2016).

Finally, some theorists have posited that certain psychological traits relevant to musical development, such as creativity , emotionality, and achievement orientation, are inborn; however, results of other research suggest that temperament and personality traits are more environmentally determined and situationally displayed.

The existence of physiological and psychological traits does not denote a “music gene” that predestines someone to accomplish significant musicianship in life. Even those who advance the role of hereditary characteristics in human abilities acknowledge the complexity of establishing genetic influence, which “does not denote the hardwired deterministic effect of a single gene but rather probabilistic propensities of many genes in multiple-gene systems” (Gagné, 2013, p. 13). Thus, it is incorrect to assume that people’s traits—even physiological ones—are genetically determined. With the exception of height and body size, people’s physiological attributes are generally affected by the conditions and experiences of their lives.

essay on my ambition in life to become a musician

Opportunity and Support

Simple exposure to music typically marks the beginning of people’s musical development. Surely children can experience very different levels of musical exposure in their lives, ranging from musically rich environments—perhaps where music is very often heard, and parents, siblings, and other caregivers frequently sing and play instruments as part of leisure time—to environments where music is virtually never present. Greater exposure leads to a better understanding of music, which amounts to a better mind-and-brain readiness for additional growth and learning. For young people whose early environments include many opportunities surrounding music, their development can quickly snowball.

Young people who are fortunate enough to grow up in musically rich and supportive homes are likely to have greater musical access too. Thus, two children who seem very similar on the surface can experience very different levels of exposure, opportunity, and support when it comes to music. These differences can become highly consequential in development and the levels of musicality attained. The accumulation of opportunities and support helps determine people’s musical agency , i.e., the sense that they can be musical, which is a critical factor in achieving more advanced levels of musicianship.

The general public often equates the concept of learning with schooling and teaching. Indeed, formal education can be a positive and powerful contributor to musical development. Throughout human history, however, people have acquired much knowledge and skill through informal means. This continues today, both through modern mass communication technology and through old-fashioned face-to-face social learning . Whether in a formal or informal context, some learning can occur without learners devoting conscious attention , as with enculturation.

More advanced knowledge and skill acquisition, however, requires learners to apply deliberate attention and effort. Individual practicing and group rehearsing are time-honored staples of the musician’s life.

As it is colloquially used, the term "practice" simply refers to repeatedly carrying out an activity in an effort to learn to do it more easily or accurately. In the fields of music and psychology, the term “practice” conveys very special meanings. Although musicians can differ dramatically in what they consider to be good practice and they may not always articulate it clearly, researchers in cognitive psychology have offered the term deliberate practice , defined as effortful, solitary practice that a performer does with the specific purpose of improving skill (Ericsson & Harwell, 2019). Obviously, this type of practice involves more than mere repetition. It involves musicians in strategizing to get the most out of their learning efforts.

As a whole, psychological research supports a clear and coherent account of the development of musicality. Most children are born with the full capacity to engage with music. As such, music learning should be seen as a birthright for all children. Although many do not experience the confluence of factors needed to reach the expertise of professional musicians, virtually all people can develop musically and enjoy the rewards that music listening and participation can provide.

My Ambition

The ambition of any person’s life usually depends on their choice and interests. I aspire to be a great dancer . I have always had the knack for dancing from an early age. My parents always encouraged me to pursue my passion. Like most of the parents, they never discouraged me because it is not the most sought after career.

Subsequently, I wish to become a good dancer. I do not want the fame of being a dancer; rather I want the acclaim of being a good dancer. As my parents motivated me to pursue my dream, they enrolled me in dance classes. It helped me grow a lot as a dancer and also enhance my skills.

Most importantly, I wish to be a dance because I want to remove the stigma surrounding this career path. I want to set an example that you can do well in life if you’re not a doctor or engineer. Especially in India, where these two ambitions are considered the most valid.

I believe in the power of dance, and how it conveys the message without words. Dance is the language of the soul, and it makes me feel alive when I indulge in it.

My Ambition in Life: An Essay

Why is it that some people seem to make it far in life, have clear goals and vision, have dreams they go after, and seem to be constantly moving forwards, where others seem to be either directionless, jump from one interest to another, waste time in life , get bored quickly, or generally don’t know what they want to do in life ?

Well, it’s very possible they have a very clear aim in life , and, if asked what their ambition in life is, they would be able to say “my ambition in life is…” and follow it up with a clear and concise answer.

This knowledge of what their ambition in life is drives them forwards in life with energy and vigour. It keeps them on focus and gives them meaning in their life.

With that ambition, with that drive, with that meaning, their lives become exciting and interesting. They are unlikely to get bored or ponder on the meaning of life because they know what drives them.

This essay on ambition will explore the importance of having an ambition in life and gives tips on how to find your ambition in life.

So let’s get to it!

Marcus Aurelius quote on having ambition in life - "A man’s worth
is no greater
than the worth
of his
ambitions."

What is ambition?

Having an ambition in life is the idea that you have something you really want to go after. This could be considered your dream(s) in life or your goal(s) in life. Ambition is something you really want to achieve. It’s often something that means something to you in a way that is hard to define in words.

An ambition is something you really want to go after. It is something that drives you. Ambition sees you through when things get hard or boring because ambition gives you energy.

When you have an ambition to achieve something, you often work tirelessly and diligently towards that because the ambition in and of itself is enough to keep you pushing forwards.

An ambition shows itself when you are faced with potential road blocks, obstacles, objections from others or the outside world, and yet you still go for it anyway.

Frank Tyger quote on the importance of ambition - “Ambition is
enthusiasm
with
a purpose”

Ambition gives people meaning in their lives. It is something to go after, something to aim for, something that means something to you on a deep level.

Your ambition in life doesn’t need to be something that is important to anyone else. An ambition in life is a very personal thing, and what is important for you to go after might not mean anything to anyone else. In fact, they may look oddly at you for your ambition. But as long as you believe in your ambition, and it is something you want, then that does not matter.

An ambition in life could be to become a doctor, a famous actor, an astronaut, to provide free energy to the world, to restore habitats for wildlife, to end world hunger, etc. Your ambition in life can be anything that means something to you , that you really want to go after, that gives you energy and keeps you moving forwards.

So when thinking about this, think about what you want and what drives you . Don’t worry about anyone else in answering “my ambition in life is…”.

John D Rockefeller quote on having an ambition in life - “The man who
starts out simply
with the idea of
getting rich
won’t succeed.
you must have a
larger ambition.”

It’s important to go through life with energy, courage and determination because we have one life to live and we should live it to the full. If you have an ambition in life, you can be sure that you are taking advantage of this life you have aren’t wasting your life .

What having an ambition in life will give you

Wouldn’t it be great to wake up every day with the drive and ambition to move towards something you really want in life? How would it feel if you woke up with a clear vision of what you wanted and you had the total energy to go after that?

Having an ambition in life gives you focus and determination. It gives you a great purpose to get out of bed every day and go after your goals with vigour and positivity.

This motivation gives you a reason to be alive that goes beyond yourself. We all have a purpose in life, we just need to find it. We have something that we can give to the world, to society, to those around us, to the future.

Wouldn’t it feel great to know what your ambition in life is, what aim you have for your life, and be able to go after it with full courage and determination?

Steven Brust quote on why you need an ambition - “A young man
without
ambition is
an old man
waiting to be.”

This way of living will mean that you start to excel in other areas. When you have an ambition in life and go after it with your full energy, you will also find that you start taking action in other areas of your life. When you start to go after things that are important to you, you will also find that you want to achieve other things or help society in other ways.

You will likely also find that your confidence and feelings of self-worth grow. When you can look someone in the eye and say “my ambition in life is…” and answer it with clarity, energy, and confidence, that will give you a feeling of self-assurance that will make you feel good about yourself and help you to achieve in other areas of your life.

When you have a clear ambition in life, and you go after it, people will look up to you and respect you. You will respect yourself. And those things will help you achieve more in your life than you would without that courage and determination.

Samuel Johnson quote on my ambition in life - "To be happy
at home is
the ultimate
result of
all ambition."

The dangers of having no ambition in life

Without having a clear ambition in life, you run the risk of not living life to the full. When you have no clear ambition in life, it’s very easy to get pulled in directions you don’t really care about. If you don’t know where you want to go, inevitably you end up doing things in life as a reaction to what is going on around you instead of in response to what really drives you.

This is the difference between living a life of reaction vs living a life that is proactive. Living a proactive life is one where you determine what you want to do, and you take steps that are actively in service of that. Reactive living is where you do things based on what is going on around you or what others want from you. Reactive living can often feel very stressful and overwhelming, whereas proactive living helps you to feel more like you are in control.

When you have no clear aim in life , or no ambition, no goals, you tend to be reactive to the world around you. You tend to respond to what other people want and to fears. You tend to have no real focus and make decisions in the moment rather than in advance. You will likely have more of a chance of regretting some of your decisions if you live reactively, rather than knowing that your decisions always serve you in some way, whether or not they have the outcome you want, when you live proactively.

This can lead to you ending up in a place in life that doesn’t really mean anything to you, or to a place where you are not living to the fullest potential of your life. You could start questioning what the point of life is, you could have regrets about your life , you could hate your job , or generally feel like you are wasting your time .

But, worse, you might not even know why or how to fix it. If you have no ambition in life, you won’t know what things to look out for that will help your life or give you direction. And then you run the risk of being stuck in a rut or generally feeling down about life.

Sir John Denham quote on why you need an ambition in life - “Ambition
is like love,
impatient both
of delays
and rivals.”

How to get an ambition in life

We are not designed to go through this life without meaning, just doing whatever falls in front of us without a reason. That is a potential path to a limited life that could lead to regrets and feelings of disappointment. Frankly, it’s risky to go through life without any ambitions. You risk getting to the end of your life wishing you did more with your life. You risk massive regrets in life if you don’t have ambitions.

I believe we are put on this planet to live life to the full, to achieve our greatest ambitions, and help others to achieve great things in their lives.

That is certainly one of my ambitions in life. I want to be a film director, writer and actor, and I want to help other people go after and achieve their dreams.

I have been fortunate to work out what my ambition in life is, but many people don’t know what their ambition in life is. If that is you, do not worry, because you certainly can find out what your aim in life is .

And you don’t need only one. As I said above, I have a few ambitions in life, although, in some way, they are all wrapped up together as a group. But it is totally okay to have multiple ambitions, as many people do.

Try not to get too stressed about this right now. You can start the process, keep working on it, and figure out your ambition in life over a matter of time. And your ambitions can change, too!

Napoleon Bonaparte on ambition in life - “Great ambition
is the passion
of a great
character.”

What do you find insanely interesting or fun?

A great question to ask when figuring out what your ambition might be is to ask yourself what you enjoy most in life. What do you find insanely fun or interesting? What do you like to spend your time reading about, researching, or watching videos about?

What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you look forward to doing the most? What are some things you like doing, where, if you don’t do them, you feel a sense of loss?

What do you get obsessed over? What do you enjoy talking about?

Is there anything in your life that you can’t stop thinking about? Is there anything that people around you say you are obsessed about? What do you find yourself talking about to people the most? Is there anything you WANT to spend your time being obsessed over?

What would you choose to do with your time if you didn’t have to worry about money or anything else?

If you had no worries in life, like paying rent, working a job, health concerns, limitations of geography, etc, what would you do? Would you be a musician? Would you travel the world? Would you volunteer in a third world country?

If you can cut your fears about the world out then this will seriously help you to come up with answers. Fear is a massive roadblock to having clear thoughts, and that is why it is important to be able to ask yourself what you would do if you had no fears in life. Generally, this is one of the most reliable ways to figure out what your ambition in life is.

Yoshida Kenko quote on my ambition in life - “Ambition
never
comes
to an end.”

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

As above, this is another question to ask yourself which involves stepping around the fears that naturally come up. Sometimes we know deep down what our ambitions in life are, but fear of failure gets in the way. This fear of failure can stop you from fully connecting with your ambition or from starting on working towards it. It can even make you believe that you don’t really want that thing after all! But this is just fear talking.

Interestingly, this fear can also be really useful in answering what your ambition in life is, because often the thing we fear the most tells us what is most important to us. Think about it – if you fear that you will fail at something, the thing you fear failing at probably means an awful lot to you.

So what do you really want to do but get scared over? What do you want to be really good at? What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? If you knew would succeed, if you had total confidence, what would you do?

This is a very reliable way to figure out your ambition(s) in life.

If you still don’t know how to answer “my ambition is…”

These questions will help you to figure out what your ambition in life might be. But if you still don’t have an idea of your aim in life after writing these down, then the best thing you can do is go and get more life experiences.

Get out in the world and try new things. If you think you might like to work in a certain field, for example, go get some work experience in that field. If you think you might want to help endangered animals, go try working with animals. If you think you might want to make a movie, go and make a low-budget film.

And if you still don’t have any ideas, try meditating on it, or try getting away on a personal break away from the world, technology and distractions, to, as people say, “discover yourself”.

Salvador Dali quote on my ambition in life - “Intelligence
without
ambition is
a bird
without wings.”

My ambition in life is to become a physician and fulfil a great need in my village. This results in many deaths each year due to a lack of proper medical attention. After completing my Higher Secondary Examination, I have decided to pursue medicine and become an MBBS. My goal is to return to my village and establish a dispensary within my home where I will provide free treatment to impoverished patients. The medical profession will allow me to save countless lives from death’s grasp.

Short Essay on My Ambition #2

Having an ambition in life is crucial for achieving success. My ambition is to become a teacher as I believe it is a noble and responsible profession. The misery and distress in our country are due to the lack of education and illiteracy among people. Thus, I aim to spread education among the masses as much as I can within my capacity as a teacher. My goal is to impart man-making education that emphasizes moral values rather than the pursuit of money. As a teacher, I want to be a respected and beloved figure in society. Although the road ahead may be challenging, I will try my best to achieve my aim.

Short Essay on My Ambition #3

Ambition is a crucial objective in life that helps one to succeed. Having a goal is essential to guide one’s path in life. As a future citizen of my country, I understand that I have certain duties towards society and my country. Education is the foundation for the progress of any nation. Therefore, my ambition in life is to spread education. However, any noble work requires financial support.

After completing my graduation, I plan to join my father’s business, which will be a good source of earning money. I intend to use a significant portion of my profits to provide education and medical treatment to impoverished villagers. My plan includes setting up schools for children, night schools for adults, libraries, and training centres for young boys and girls to help them secure employment. I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of many people with my ambitions. Even though the path ahead may be challenging, I will put in my best efforts to achieve my goal.

Essay on My Ambition

Every person, irrespective of age, has a dream or a wish to achieve something special in life. Even when I was very young, my relatives would ask about my ambition. While I did not know what it meant, now I understand what they meant. Ambition is all about considering what I want to become in life. It helps us to form a particular aim in my life. It also refers to concentrating on a specific goal.

My Ambition

The ambition in anybody's life would depend on the interests and choices of the person. My ambition is to become a fitness guide in the future. Though my parents feel that it is quite an unusual choice for me, they are very encouraging about it. My parents are well aware of my interest in outdoor sports, as well as in yoga and Karate. They have always supported me to follow my passion.

Accordingly, they have enrolled me in yoga, swimming and Karate classes. I also play badminton regularly with my father. They have promised to help me in every way that they can provide. I never ignore my studies. Becoming a fitness expert might not be a very sought after choice, but my parents are happy with the choice nevertheless.

Why This Ambition?

From a very tender age, I have seen my grandparents very enthusiastic about morning walks and yoga. My mother would visit the gym and meditation classes regularly. And she was also very careful about what we eat. This is how I developed a liking for physical fitness. Now, I have become very passionate about different types of exercises. Also, I love communicating with people. It makes me feel great when I meet new people, talk to them and help them in any possible way. As a fitness guide, I may get the opportunity to meet new people, understand their problems and make them look and feel better with the right exercises. Moreover, if they have a healthy and fit body, then they would feel more confident than ever.

Also, I don't like to stick to a regular desk job. I feel that as a fitness expert, every working day is going to be different. I will have people of all age groups and from different walks of life coming to me. Each of them would have unique fitness needs. Every day, I will have a new challenge and something new to the plan.

What I Want To Do

As a fitness trainer, it would be my priority to instruct and give support to those who come to me. Depending on their physical condition and their needs, I would suggest and create workout plans. I will have to earn expertise in different forms of work out. I will use my knowledge and experience to create customized exercise plans. I can lead group classes, provide one to one sessions or combine both. Also, to keep me upgraded, I will keep on learning new exercise techniques.

Where to Work?

A fitness instructor can either be a freelancer or have his or her fitness studio. Several professionals also work in boutique hotels, as well as in gyms, hospitals, schools and similar places. Even in keeping with the trend of working from home after COVID 19 scenario, I have seen that some professionals are offering online classes as well.

Before that, I will have to get a degree or diploma in fitness courses. It is also essential to develop my communication skills. For that, I may have to join special grooming classes. Also, I will need to research the latest developments and trends in fitness training. This will help me to perform even better.

Different types of fitness classes, such as aerobics, HIIT, Pilates, yoga, dance, cycling and the like are becoming more popular than ever. This is gradually increasing the job opportunity for fitness experts. Also, the modern lifestyle has become very sedentary. There is minimal scope for outdoor activities and rigorous physical exercise. So even some young people are suffering from severe conditions like diabetes, obesity and hypertension. So almost everyone, at one time or another, looks for a trainer for help.

Fitness is no more a bodybuilding game. It is all about following good postures, eating right and staying confident. This is where I might help.

FAQs on My Ambition Essay

1. What is the importance of ambition in life?

Ambition is a powerful motivator for human development. Without a healthy dose of ambition, no one can prosper. Those that aspire to be more, learn more, accomplish more, give more, or have more have a strong internal drive that propels them to dream greater and go further. They are motivated by an ambition to advance and achieve their objectives. Ambition shows healthy self-esteem and a higher power of abstraction and imagery of the future when it is well-directed and supported by values. As they get closer to their goals, ambitious folks have a glitter in their eyes. They have a higher vibration and a contagious passion for completing tasks. They motivate and inspire others.

It is important to remember that ambition does not imply a lack of morals or principles. It is not about a lack of control or being manipulative, as many people in Western civilisation believe. Ambition isn't valued here. We are afraid of it and distrust it. We are prone to conflating it with unbridled ambition. It is as if every ambitious person was born with the ability and willingness to cause harm to others. Of course, there are others with unrestrained ambition—the evil guy in the story stereotyped—who are capable of doing everything and running over anyone to accomplish what they want. However, persons with a healthy and positive amount of ambition are not inherently disqualified from succeeding and doing good at the same time.

2. What are the disadvantages of being excessively ambitious?

This is a positive attribute in general, especially for people who are seeking to start their own business. Obviously, if you are more naturally motivated to establish and achieve goals, you will have a better chance of succeeding than someone who is not, right?

This is not always the case, though. Extreme ambition may, in fact, cause more harm than good in some circumstances. If you believe you are a person who is very ambitious, you should be aware of the following potentially dangerous side effects.

Fixation on the End Result: The tendency to focus too narrowly on one vision or ultimate goal is the first major adverse consequence of excessive ambition. For example, if your objective is to make $1 million by the age of 30, everything that doesn't appear to push you closer to that goal may seem pointless.

For two reasons, this is an issue. For starters, it limits your ability to adjust to new situations. If a new rival appears to be posing a danger to your organisation, you may need to adapt your strategy and goals, even if it means departing from your initial vision. This will be difficult if you have too much ambition.

Unfettered Growth: Excessive ambition can also lead to an overabundance of desire to advance. And, as you are probably aware, uncontrolled, excessively rapid expansion can lead to a company's demise. When you develop too quickly, you wind up squandering money; you invest in people, equipment, and resources before you need them; and your internal structures become so disorganised that keeping up is practically impossible.

Becoming Selfish: Being ambitious tends to make you more selfish, leading you to pursue personal ambitions at the expense of your family, friends, and community.

You might, for example, work late into the night instead of spending meaningful time with your spouse and child, or you might ignore your employees' demands and mental health in order to eke out a little more output. While this may help you make some short-term gains, relationships and community connections are greater predictors of success in the long run: These bonds are mutually beneficial, and they are considerably more vital to your mental health than ambition, which is the subject of my next section.

3. How to choose a career?

To choose your career, remember the following points:

Determine your Abilities and Passions: Choosing a career path is a significant decision. You will spend a large portion of your life at work, so make good career choices if you want to enjoy your job, stay motivated, and reach your full potential.

To begin, you must first understand yourself. This entails examining your abilities as well as your interests and values.

Consider your Options for a Career: Consider what your dream work sector would be, then examine the local, national, and worldwide employment markets to learn about its important trends. This will assist you in identifying other alternative career options as well as determining whether roles are expanding or dropping.

Make a Decision: You are now ready to start making choices. Combine what you have learned about yourself and your options with what you've learned about the graduate employment market.

Choose the role that most interests you from your list of work possibilities and one or two backup options in case you are unable to pursue your initial pick.

4. How to relax in life?

Breathe it out: One of the most basic relaxation techniques, breathing exercises can successfully soothe your stressed-out body and mind at any moment. Spot one hand on your belly and sit or lie down in a calm and safe place in your house, such as your bed or the floor. Inhale slowly to a count of three, then exhale slowly to the same count of three. As you breathe in and out, notice how your tummy rises and falls. Repeat five times, or as many times as necessary to feel at ease.

5. How to fight laziness?

Burnout can be caused by setting unreasonable objectives and taking on too much. Burnout symptoms are recognised by medical specialists, despite the fact that it is not a clinical diagnosis. Burnout at work can lead to exhaustion, a lack of interest and ambition, and a desire to leave. Set realistic and manageable goals that will get you where you want to go without overwhelming you along the way to avoid overloading.

Negative self-talk can sabotage your efforts to accomplish goals in many areas of your life. Negative self-talk includes telling yourself that you are a slacker. Go to the Vedantu app and website for free study materials.

6. What is the difference between aim and ambition in life?

Having an aim in life is as essential as having an ambition. Aim refers to a specific goal that a particular person might want to reach. However, ambition means a very strong wish to achieve what one aims in life. It is out of ambition that we can set realistic targets, plan and work to get the results. Serious ambition can keep people motivated and well-directed.

7. Why is ambition important?

With ambition, there is a strong desire to achieve something positive. It gives all the motivation to chase dreams. This, in turn, helps our mind to look for new scopes and opportunities, as well as find new strategies to reach our goals.

8. How to find your ambition?

Not every idea that comes to mind is an ambition. To find your true ambition, you need to take some time. Think about what you like to do in life. Also, think if you have any idea to use your favourite activity to do something fruitful. Also, consider the activities that you think are giving a lot of effort. These steps will help you to find your true ambition.

We all have some ambitions in life. All of us want to achieve something and be something that gives us meaning and purpose. My ambition in life is to be an honest and successful teacher. But what is your ambition in life?

Essay on My Ambition in Life: 600-700 Words

Ambition is a powerful driving force that compels individuals to strive for greatness and reach their full potential. It is the inner fire that ignites our passion and fuels our determination to achieve our goals. My ambition in life is to become a successful writer and use my words to inspire and impact others on a global scale.

The inspiration behind my Ambition

Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the written word. I remember spending countless hours immersed in books, getting lost in the magical worlds created by authors. As I grew older, my love for writing only intensified.

I would scribble down my thoughts and ideas in journals, pour my heart out in poetry, and create short stories that transported me to different places and times. Writing was not just a hobby for me; it was a way of expressing myself and making sense of the world.

As I entered my teenage years, I started to understand the power of words. I realized that writers have the ability to influence and shape people’s thoughts and emotions. They can open minds, change perspectives, and even spark revolutions. This realization only fueled my ambition to become a writer and make a difference through my words.

Turning Point in My Journey

My first major breakthrough in my writing journey came when I won a school-wide essay competition. The topic was “My Vision for the World,” and I poured my heart and soul into crafting a powerful piece.

The judges were impressed by my writing style and the depth of my ideas. I was awarded a cash prize and was invited to read my essay at the school assembly. The overwhelming response from my classmates and teachers further cemented my ambition to pursue writing as a career.

In college, I majored in English Literature and Creative Writing, determined to hone my skills and learn from the great writers who came before me. I devoured books of all genres, studied the techniques of renowned authors, and attended writing workshops and seminars.

I also started a blog where I shared my thoughts and short stories, gaining a small but loyal following of readers.

My experience

One of the most significant experiences in my writing journey was when I was selected to participate in a writing retreat in a remote village in Italy. It was a life-changing experience that allowed me to disconnect from the chaos of the world and immerse myself in my writing.

Surrounded by nature and like-minded writers, I wrote some of my best work during that retreat. It was there that I realized the true power of writing to connect people from different backgrounds and cultures.

As I continued to pursue my ambition, I faced numerous challenges and setbacks. Rejection letters from publishers, writer’s block, and self-doubt were all part of the journey. But I refused to let them discourage me.

I drew inspiration from successful writers who faced similar struggles and persevered, and I reminded myself of my ultimate goal: to use my words to inspire and impact others.

One of the most fulfilling moments in my writing career was when I published my first novel. It was a story that I had been working on for years, pouring my heart and soul into every word.

Seeing it on the shelves of bookstores and receiving positive reviews from readers was a dream come true. But more importantly, I was proud of the message of hope and resilience that my book conveyed.

My ambition in life does not end with just one book. I am determined to continue writing and sharing stories that touch people’s hearts and minds. I want to use my platform to shed light on important social issues and inspire positive change. And I hope to write stories that transcend borders and bring people together, regardless of their differences.

In conclusion, my ambition in life is to become a successful writer and use my words to inspire and impact others. I believe that writing is a powerful tool that can change the world for the better, and I am determined to use it to its full potential.

With hard work, perseverance, and a strong belief in my abilities, I am confident that I will achieve my goal and leave a lasting impact on the world.

My Ambition In Life Essay: 500 Words

My Ambition In Life Essay: 500 Words

Each living being has a calling in life. This calling gives them purpose and reason for being alive. So, it is very crucial to find our ambition in life and work on it till we become who we are. Each of us has a different dream. We want to be doctors, engineers, writers, politicians, teachers, firefighters, scientists, and more.

When we have ambition, we can plan our lives ahead. It is the driving force behind our lives, and our ambitions lead us to different places and phases in our lives.

The Importance Of Ambition In Life

It is essential to have ambition when we want to reach higher positions in life. We will not understand how high we can climb unless we look above. Having an ambition in life helps us create goals and keeps us motivated and energetic throughout our journey.

With a high and strong ambition, not only can we develop a plan, but we can also measure the amount of work we have to put in to reach the level we are dreaming of reaching. It works like an ultimatum that makes us work against the clock and the calendar. The cost of success and reaching our life’s goal is hard work and strong determination. Our ambition helps us strengthen that determination.

My Ambition In Life

My ambition in life is to become a successful teacher. I believe that teachers are essential contributors to society. They are the makers of engineers, scientists, journalists, doctors, engineers, and politicians of the next generation.

I want to gain as much knowledge as possible and distribute them among students of the next generation. Teaching is one of the noblest professions, and teachers are respected and loved by everyone in society.

But there is more to being a teacher than we generally know. Most importantly, teachers have the opportunity to meet different types of children . They know and understand that every child is unique and different. They take unique measures to help all of them blend in and learn their academic lessons in the environment of a school.

Teachers are also responsible for building their student’s moral, social, and ethical values. They help students learn about their cultures, help them become creative, and motivate them.

After the parents, it is the teachers who take the responsibility of teaching about the rights and wrongs to their students. Being a teacher is a heavy responsibility to take, and I am ambitious enough to fulfill my dream and take this responsibility seriously.

With ambition comes the fear of being over-ambitious. Growing up too fast only leads to longtime failure and resentment. So, we should always beware of an over-ambitious attitude. We should always measure our ambitions in life by calculating our steps and taking them accordingly.

In conclusion, our ambitions help us follow and achieve our goals in life. But, we should be very calculative and smart about what we desire. It is always wise to keep realistic ambition and move forward accordingly.

My Ambition in Life: 400 Words

Everybody in this world has this innate desire to do something meaningful that will make a difference in other people’s lives. This desire to attain a meaningful position or become someone important is known as ambition. People can have different ambitions in life. For instance, someone may want to be a doctor and save lives, another person may want to be a social worker and work at the grassroots level to help improve other people’s living conditions. Some people also want to be teachers or professors to not only educate but also help them to realize their potential.

However, my ambition since childhood was to become a journalist. I wanted to travel the world, cover exciting and interesting events, and write about them. Personally, the storytelling aspect of Journalism interests me the most. I want to visit new places, meet people from all walks of life hear their stories, and write about them.

Now that I am in college and studying Journalism and media studies, I have realized that Journalism is much more than traveling the world and writing about people’s stories. It is also a kind of public service because all journalists have an ethical duty to collect and report accurate information in an impartial manner regardless of the field they are working in – politics, current events, business, or entertainment.

I want to work as a reporter in the field of politics because this field will provide me with ample opportunities to travel all around the world and meet new people – which was my original reason for becoming a writer. But alongside traveling, now I want to write about different current events in politics and governments around the world. I also want to write and talk about the voting process in an impartial manner so that more people become aware and go vote. Furthermore, I want to cover stories on topics such as universal healthcare and education so as to keep the public informed about what steps are being taken by the government to improve these areas.

It is very important that everyone should have an ambition in life. It can be a big ambition or something small, but everyone should have an ambition. This is because life without an aim or an ambition becomes meaningless or directionless. The aim in life to do something meaningful and to become someone is what drives us and inspires us. And finally, when we are able to fulfill the aim we have set for ourselves, there is no better feeling in life than that.

Essay on My Ambition 500+ Words

Ambition is like a spark that ignites the fire within us. It’s that inner drive that propels us to achieve our dreams and reach for the stars. In this essay, we will explore the significance of having ambition in our lives and how it can shape our future.

Ambition Provides Purpose

Having ambition gives our lives purpose and direction. Imagine a ship sailing without a destination; it would wander aimlessly. Similarly, without ambition, we might drift through life without clear goals. Statistics show that individuals with defined ambitions are more likely to succeed in their endeavors. For instance, a study revealed that 90% of accomplished people had strong ambitions.

Ambition Drives Achievement

Ambition is the driving force behind great accomplishments. It pushes us to work hard, set goals, and strive for excellence. Consider the example of Thomas Edison, whose ambition to invent the light bulb led to one of the greatest inventions in history. Experts agree that ambition is a key factor in achieving success. In fact, a survey of successful individuals found that 80% attributed their achievements to ambition.

Fosters Growth

Ambition encourages personal growth and development. When we set ambitious goals, we are motivated to acquire new skills and knowledge. It challenges us to step out of our comfort zones and explore our potential. Psychologists suggest that ambition is closely linked to self-improvement. Studies have shown that people who pursue personal growth through ambition tend to lead more fulfilling lives.

Ambition Overcomes Challenges

Life is full of obstacles and setbacks. However, ambition equips us with the resilience to overcome these challenges. When we face difficulties, our ambition acts as a guiding light, helping us persevere. A famous example is the story of J.K. Rowling, who faced rejection and adversity but never gave up on her ambition to become a successful author.

Ambition Inspires Others

Ambition is not only a personal motivator but also an inspiration to those around us. When others witness our determination and drive, they too are encouraged to set and pursue their own goals. Teachers often emphasize the importance of ambition as a positive influence on society. Ambitious individuals are more likely to give back to their communities and make a difference.

Conclusion of Essay on My Ambition

In conclusion, ambition is the force that fuels our dreams and propels us towards success. It gives our lives purpose, drives our achievements, fosters personal growth, and empowers us to overcome challenges. Ambition is not a distant concept; it’s a quality that each one of us can nurture and harness. So, whether your ambition is to become a doctor, a scientist, an artist, or anything else, know that it has the power to shape your future and lead you to greatness.

As you embark on your journey through life, remember the words of Helen Keller: “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” Let your ambition be your guiding star, and you’ll find that the possibilities are endless. So, dream big, set ambitious goals, and work hard to make your dreams a reality. Your ambition is the key to unlocking the doors of success and leaving a lasting mark on the world.
