A lot of factors play a role in staying healthy. In turn, good health can decrease your risk of developing certain diseases or conditions. These include heart disease, stroke, some cancers, and injuries. Learn what you can do to maintain your and your family’s health.

Path to improved health

Eat healthy.

What you eat is closely linked to your health. Balanced nutrition has many benefits. By making  healthier food choices , you can prevent or treat some conditions. These include heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. A healthy diet can help you lose weight and lower your cholesterol, as well.

Get regular exercise

Exercise can help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colon cancer. It can help treat depression, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure. People who exercise also get injured less often.  Routine exercise  can make you feel better and keep your weight under control. Try to be active for 30 to 60 minutes about 5 times a week. Remember, any amount of exercise is better than none.

Lose weight if you’re overweight

Many Americans are overweight. Carrying too much weight increases your risk for several health conditions. These include:  

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Some cancers
  • Gallbladder disease

Being overweight also can lead to weight-related injuries. A common problem is arthritis in the weight-bearing joints, such as your spine, hips, or knees. There are several things you can try to help you  lose weight  and keep it off.

Protect your skin

Sun exposure  is linked to skin cancer. This is the most common type of cancer in the United States. It’s best to limit your time spent in the sun. Be sure to wear protective clothing and hats when you are outside. Use sunscreen year-round on exposed skin, like your face and hands. It protects your skin and helps prevent skin cancer. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. It should be at least an SPF 15. Do not sunbathe or use tanning booths.

Practice safe sex

Safe sex  is good for your emotional and physical health. The safest form of sex is between 2 people who only have sex with each other. Use protection to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms are the most effective form of prevention. Talk to your doctor if you need to be tested for STIs.

Don’t smoke or use tobacco

Smoking and tobacco use are harmful habits. They can cause heart disease and mouth, throat, or lung cancer. They also are leading factors of emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The sooner  you quit , the better.

Limit how much alcohol you drink

Men should have no more than 2 drinks a day. Women should have no more than 1 drink a day. One drink is equal to 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor.  Too much alcohol  can damage your liver. It can cause some cancers, such as throat, liver, or pancreas cancer. Alcohol abuse also contributes to deaths from car wrecks, murders, and suicides.

Things to consider

In addition to the factors listed above, you should make time for whole body health. Visit your doctors for regular checkups. This includes your primary doctor as well as your dentist and eye doctor. Let your health benefits and preventive care services work for you. Make sure you know what your health insurance plan involves. Preventive care can detect disease or prevent illness before they start. This includes certain doctor visits and screenings.

You need to make time for breast health. Breast cancer is a leading cause of death for women. Men can get breast cancer, too. Talk to your doctor about when you should start getting mammograms. You may need to start screening early if you have risk factors, such as family history. One way to detect breast cancer is to do a monthly self-exam.

Women should get routine pap smears as well. Women ages 21 to 65 should get tested every 3 years. This may differ if you have certain conditions or have had your cervix removed.

Ask your doctor about other cancer screenings. Adults should get screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 45. Your doctor may want to check for other types of cancer. This will depend on your risk factors and family history.

If you smoke more than 30 packs a year (or vape the equivalent), your doctor may recommend a low-dose CT scan (a type of X-ray) to check for cancer.

Your doctor also may recommend a total body skin exam if you are out in the sun a great deal or have a family history of skin cancer.

Keep a list of current medicines you take. You also should stay up to date on shots, including getting an annual flu shot. Adults need a Td booster every 10 years. Your doctor may substitute it with Tdap. This also protects against whooping cough (pertussis). Women who are pregnant need the Tdap vaccine. People who are in close contact with babies should get it as well.

  • Should I have a yearly physical exam?
  • What types of preventive care does my insurance cover?
  • When should I start getting screened for certain cancers and conditions?
  • Which healthy choice is the most important for me?

As we transition from 2020 into 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect nearly every aspect of our lives. For many, this health crisis has created a range of unique and individual impacts—including food access issues, income disruptions, and emotional distress.

Although we do not have concrete evidence regarding specific dietary factors that can reduce risk of COVID-19, we do know that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is critical to keeping our immune system strong. Beyond immunity, research has shown that individuals following five key habits—eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, keeping a healthy body weight, not drinking too much alcohol, and not smoking— live more than a decade longer than those who don’t. Plus, maintaining these practices may not only help us live longer, but also better. Adults following these five key habits at middle-age were found to live more years free of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

While sticking to healthy habits is often easier said than done, we created this guide with the goal of providing some tips and strategies that may help. During these particularly uncertain times, we invite you to do what you can to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and hopefully (if you’re able to try out a new recipe or exercise, or pick up a fulfilling hobby) find some enjoyment along the way.

Improving and maintaining health and well-being is the personal responsibility of each person. There might be a lot of activities one could undertake to contribute to their physical and mental health. For this reflective account, I chose interventions such as yoga and dieting. Yoga is popular among those who monitor the body’s health and strive for inner harmony. This ancient practice is based on a combination of physical and spiritual development. Yoga practitioners strive to grow spiritually and improve themselves. On the other hand, the body’s most vital instinct—necessary for maintaining life—is the gratification of hunger. First of all, the food we eat creates the cells and tissues that make up our entire body. Second, eating provides the body with the energy it needs to function. Therefore, dieting—including what we eat, in what quantity, when, and how—depends on our health.

Doing yoga and healthy dieting have impacted my understanding of my health. I have noticed that when I implement these activities as habits in my life, I start to notice improvements in my well-being. I feel more energetic, and my immune system becomes stronger. People who practice yoga regularly note that the body becomes strong and flexible, and the mind calms down. When I do yoga every day for a minimum of one hour, I feel my muscles are stronger, and my mind is calmer. In the past, I have suffered from high-stress levels; however, yoga helps me manage such problems. The main thing in yoga is to find harmony and peace of mind, and breathing exercises and meditation techniques help with this. Improved well-being, a sense of peace, and a positive attitude – are just a small part of the positive results that yoga gave me.

It is believed that the improvement of the body is a complex result of physical activity, mental work, and lifestyle changes. Yoga classes positively affect all life support systems of the body. The study held by Hilcove et al. (2021) showed that yoga interventions helped nurses decrease and control stress levels. Mindfulness-based yoga helped participants to prevent burnout and positively affected their well-being (Hilcove, 2021). Another research that was handled by Kim (2020) revealed that yoga intervention helps to solve problems with “chronic nonspecific lower back pain in nursing practice” (Kim, 2020, p. 7). Yoga programs are considered a tool for managing pain relief (Kim, 2020). The activity is also beneficial for the lungs and is recommended for patients with lung problems (Kupershmidt and Barnable, 2019). Thus, implementing yoga intervention in the nursing practice is an effective way to improve the well-being of the patients.

After the first weeks of classes, you can feel the benefits of yoga. It allows you to learn to feel your body, manage your health, and expand the range of your lungs. At the same time, the physical activity allows us to see quick results. Classes have practically no contraindications or age and gender restrictions. Initial data and level of preparation do not matter. Now joint lessons with children, couples, and wellness sessions for the older age category are popular. If a beginner pursues not only the goal of losing weight and getting a beautiful body but also accepting himself and his needs, learning to live in harmony with the mind and shell, then yoga will give him this.

Adding healthy dieting to yoga made me see an even bigger positive effect on my well-being. Because yoga aims to teach mindfulness, I have become more conscious of my diet. Drinking more water and cutting out junk helped improve my health conditions. The body needs to consistently consume a variety of nutrients, including proteins, carbs, fats, water, minerals, and vitamins in the right amounts and proportions. The risk of contracting certain diseases increases when specific nutrients are either insufficient or excessive. Healthy eating helps build up mental and physical vitality, enables weight maintenance without harsh restrictions, and aids in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Healthy eating and dieting are an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Of course, the role of dieting in nursing practice can not be underestimated. Distinct types of patients with different health problems require specific diets. The study provided by Kurnia and Yulia (2021) showed that nutritional education is crucial for patients with diabetes and their families. Food affects the sugar levels in the blood, and thus, people who suffer from diabetes should pay attention to their food choices (Kurnia and Yulia, 2021). Dieting helps control many aspects of the human body and thus plays an important role in patient care. A complex relationship and interdependence exist between substances that enter the body with food. For example, calcium is needed to build and maintain bones. In turn, calcium can be absorbed in the body only in the presence of vitamin D (Riccio and Rossano, 2018). For calcium to function, phosphorus and magnesium are required; they act only in the presence of copper and zinc. Nutrition is one of the important factors of human health that provides adequate growth and development in childhood, high performance of the adult population, and active longevity of the elderly and old people.

The information I have gained from this activity will be useful for my future practice. Now, when I have explored the benefits that yoga and dieting interventions can bring, I will try to implement them when relevant. Nurses are responsible for contributing to the well-being of their patients. That is why it was highly motivational for me to analyze how specific activities affected my health and lifestyle. Moreover, these and many other interventions may demonstrate positive results systematically and properly. A person’s well-being depends on what activity they undertake in their everyday life. Both yoga and dieting interventions showed to have positive results on my health, and I hope it will be the same for my future patients.

This reflective account is relevant to the MNC code and its distinctive themes. Generally, the code includes four themes referred to prioritizing people, practicing effectively, preserving safety, and promoting professionalism and trust (NMC Code, 2022). I want to discuss effective practice and promoting professionalism and trust. For instance, yoga and dieting are related to the ‘practice effectively’ theme. When yoga is practiced regularly, it brings more results for the body and mind. Accordingly, when dieting options are made correctly, they will be more effective and beneficial for the patient’s health. ‘Promote professionalism and trust theme is also connected with the two interventions as patients should trust the process. Health care professionals should educate patients about the efficiency of the activities they implement to be aware of the purpose of these particular interventions.

Mind is used to refer to the human consciousness that usually originates in the brain and can be manifested through thought, emotion, memory and imagination. It usually influence both the physical and mental behavior. It plays a very important role in taking control of the mental health. Care should be taken in order to ensure that good health is maintained all the time.

The body is used to refer to the physical body of living organisms. It is used in connection with the appearance of an organism. The body is considered in behavior and therefore as little valued as compared to the mind and spirit.

Well-being can be used to describe something that is ultimately good for a person. Well-being is of great importance in moral philosophy. A person should take good care of his/her body in order to ensure that his/her well being is maximized. A person’s moral character is usually directly related to their well being.

Health can be referred to the generation condition of a person in all aspects. It can also be a level of functional metabolic efficiency of an organism. Health can also be a state of complete physical, mental, social and well being and not merely the absence of disease. (WHO,1948)1. Health is not the objective of living but it’s a resource for everyday life and therefore for good life to be maintained, it should be given a priority. It emphasizes social and personal resources. Good health can be achieved through a combination of physical, mental and well being. This concept is referred to as the Health Triangle.

During the early years, Hillary looked very small and maintained the size till October 1992. The body size changed when she started having ill health ‘odyssey’. The problem started in 1991 when she started experiencing migraine headaches. She felt very weak and was really worried even though the nurse told her that it was just a common premenstrual symptom. The problem still continues to date, even though the problem could have not been that severe. The notion she had must have led to the prolonged effect of the depression. This shows exactly how settled mind can lead to a good body being while when the mind is depressed, and then the problem is likely to increase further.

After the winter of 1992, a chest infection was detected and an asthma medication prescribed. The doctor prescribed some medication which worked but stopped working after some time. Hilary felt very ill and low when no disease was diagnosed just after leaving abroad. The feeling that kept on eating her life away was the major cause for the series of complications that she had. Her weight increased steadily as a result of these. This aspect shows the type of influence that somebody’s mental health can have to the physical body appearance.

In the year 2000, the symptoms had not one away completely and her social life was still non-existent. Hilary was not pleased with the fact that she got negative results when she went back to the hospital later in the year 2000. She wanted positive results no matter the consequences because she believed that if she got positive results, then something could have been done about her condition. Hilary’s underlying illness is still present. Initially, Hillary had a very small body which people at the maternity saw as abnormal but after the suffering that she underwent, made her have a more normal size.

Hilary advices us to put our minds at rest because it plays a very big role in ensuring the general well being of the body. Psychologists also argue that when one’s mind is not t rest, no matter how good one may eat or do exercises, the body will still look emaciated which is a sign of poor health.

People who are charged with the responsibility of taking care of patients should be very patient with them. Treatments alone are not enough to see a patient recover from the illness. Encouragements are also necessary to ensure a speedy recovery. Once the mind has been involved and the health restored, this aspect alone is enough to realize the patient’s dream of recovering.

Good health usually comes when the mind is settled and there is well-being of the body. The good coordination of both the mind and the body will ensure that there is a successful person. Poor health will make the mind unsettled and hence poor body being. Moderation should be done so that one aspect is given more weight and the rest left behind.

My sister is a three-time breast cancer survivor who has a challenging autoimmune condition and has personally experienced significant loss in her lifetime. And yet, my sister is quick to smile and lend a helping hand, and she expresses joy and gratitude frequently.

She is one of the most resilient people I know, which got me thinking: How does resilience impact health, and, more importantly, how can a person become more resilient even if they are not naturally bent in that direction?

Resilience is our ability to bounce back from adversity. The American Psychological Association defines it as “the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility.” Highly resilient people like my sister find ways to shift gears, heal, and move forward. And as it turns out, there are significant health benefits to being resilient.

Why Resilience Matters

Resilience plays a fundamental role in promoting overall health and well-being. Beyond merely coping with challenges, cultivating resilience offers many benefits that extend across various aspects of life. [1]

Physically, resilience contributes to health by reducing the negative impacts of stress on the body. Research indicates that individuals with higher levels of resilience tend to have lower rates of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular conditions, and exhibit stronger immune system function. [2] Moreover, resilient individuals often engage in healthier lifestyle behaviors, such as regular exercise and balanced nutrition , which further support physical well-being. [2]

Mentally and emotionally, resilience serves as a protective factor against the development of mental health disorders like anxiety and depression . [3] Resilient individuals are better equipped to manage stress, adapt to change, and maintain a positive outlook, fostering greater psychological strength in the face of adversity. This emotional resilience not only enhances mental health but also improves relationships, productivity , and overall quality of life.

Socially, resilience strengthens interpersonal connections and fosters a sense of community and support. [2] Resilient individuals are more adept at seeking help, offering assistance, and building strong social networks that serve as valuable resources during challenging times. These connections provide emotional sustenance, encouragement, and practical assistance, reinforcing resilience and promoting collective well-being.

In essence, cultivating resilience is a holistic endeavor that positively impacts physical health, mental well-being, and social connection. By developing resilience skills and nurturing a resilient mindset, individuals can better navigate life's inevitable ups and downs, fostering greater health, happiness , and fulfillment.

While it’s true that resilience can be passed on from generation to generation (our mom was very resilient), it’s also true that resilience is a trait that can be nurtured and strengthened. It’s not a case of either you have it or you don’t.

Cultivating resilience involves developing skills and daily practices that strengthen our ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. Here are some strategies to foster resilience:

  • Release regret: This is perhaps the most important thing to consider. Resilient people naturally look to the future and like to plan and influence their destiny. This is hard to do when holding on to regret from the past. The best way to release regret is to acknowledge it, learn from it, and then let it go.
  • Garner gratitude: Expressing gratitude consistently is one of the most powerful things you can do to become more resilient. In addition, research demonstrates that people who are consistently grateful have better mental, emotional, and physical health. [4]
  • Move more: Exercise is a great way to become more resilient. In fact, a study conducted during the 2020 pandemic found that exercise was strongly correlated to resilience. [5]

If you're like many digitally savvy Americans, it has likely been a while since you've spent much time writing by hand.

The laborious process of tracing out our thoughts, letter by letter, on the page is becoming a relic of the past in our screen-dominated world, where text messages and thumb-typed grocery lists have replaced handwritten letters and sticky notes. Electronic keyboards offer obvious efficiency benefits that have undoubtedly boosted our productivity — imagine having to write all your emails longhand.

To keep up, many schools are introducing computers as early as preschool, meaning some kids may learn the basics of typing before writing by hand.

But giving up this slower, more tactile way of expressing ourselves may come at a significant cost, according to a growing body of research that's uncovering the surprising cognitive benefits of taking pen to paper, or even stylus to iPad — for both children and adults.

In kids, studies show that tracing out ABCs, as opposed to typing them, leads to better and longer-lasting recognition and understanding of letters. Writing by hand also improves memory and recall of words, laying down the foundations of literacy and learning. In adults, taking notes by hand during a lecture, instead of typing, can lead to better conceptual understanding of material.

"There's actually some very important things going on during the embodied experience of writing by hand," says Ramesh Balasubramaniam , a neuroscientist at the University of California, Merced. "It has important cognitive benefits."

While those benefits have long been recognized by some (for instance, many authors, including Jennifer Egan and Neil Gaiman , draft their stories by hand to stoke creativity), scientists have only recently started investigating why writing by hand has these effects.

A slew of recent brain imaging research suggests handwriting's power stems from the relative complexity of the process and how it forces different brain systems to work together to reproduce the shapes of letters in our heads onto the page.

Both handwriting and typing involve moving our hands and fingers to create words on a page. But handwriting, it turns out, requires a lot more fine-tuned coordination between the motor and visual systems. This seems to more deeply engage the brain in ways that support learning.

"Handwriting is probably among the most complex motor skills that the brain is capable of," says Marieke Longcamp , a cognitive neuroscientist at Aix-Marseille Université.

Gripping a pen nimbly enough to write is a complicated task, as it requires your brain to continuously monitor the pressure that each finger exerts on the pen. Then, your motor system has to delicately modify that pressure to re-create each letter of the words in your head on the page.

"Your fingers have to each do something different to produce a recognizable letter," says Sophia Vinci-Booher , an educational neuroscientist at Vanderbilt University. Adding to the complexity, your visual system must continuously process that letter as it's formed. With each stroke, your brain compares the unfolding script with mental models of the letters and words, making adjustments to fingers in real time to create the letters' shapes, says Vinci-Booher.

That's not true for typing.

To type "tap" your fingers don't have to trace out the form of the letters — they just make three relatively simple and uniform movements. In comparison, it takes a lot more brainpower, as well as cross-talk between brain areas, to write than type.

Recent brain imaging studies bolster this idea. A study published in January found that when students write by hand, brain areas involved in motor and visual information processing " sync up " with areas crucial to memory formation, firing at frequencies associated with learning.

"We don't see that [synchronized activity] in typewriting at all," says Audrey van der Meer , a psychologist and study co-author at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. She suggests that writing by hand is a neurobiologically richer process and that this richness may confer some cognitive benefits.

Other experts agree. "There seems to be something fundamental about engaging your body to produce these shapes," says Robert Wiley , a cognitive psychologist at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. "It lets you make associations between your body and what you're seeing and hearing," he says, which might give the mind more footholds for accessing a given concept or idea.

Those extra footholds are especially important for learning in kids, but they may give adults a leg up too. Wiley and others worry that ditching handwriting for typing could have serious consequences for how we all learn and think.

What might be lost as handwriting wanes

The clearest consequence of screens and keyboards replacing pen and paper might be on kids' ability to learn the building blocks of literacy — letters.

"Letter recognition in early childhood is actually one of the best predictors of later reading and math attainment," says Vinci-Booher. Her work suggests the process of learning to write letters by hand is crucial for learning to read them.

"When kids write letters, they're just messy," she says. As kids practice writing "A," each iteration is different, and that variability helps solidify their conceptual understanding of the letter.

Research suggests kids learn to recognize letters better when seeing variable handwritten examples, compared with uniform typed examples.

This helps develop areas of the brain used during reading in older children and adults, Vinci-Booher found.

"This could be one of the ways that early experiences actually translate to long-term life outcomes," she says. "These visually demanding, fine motor actions bake in neural communication patterns that are really important for learning later on."

Ditching handwriting instruction could mean that those skills don't get developed as well, which could impair kids' ability to learn down the road.

"If young children are not receiving any handwriting training, which is very good brain stimulation, then their brains simply won't reach their full potential," says van der Meer. "It's scary to think of the potential consequences."

Many states are trying to avoid these risks by mandating cursive instruction. This year, California started requiring elementary school students to learn cursive , and similar bills are moving through state legislatures in several states, including Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina and Wisconsin. (So far, evidence suggests that it's the writing by hand that matters, not whether it's print or cursive.)

Slowing down and processing information

For adults, one of the main benefits of writing by hand is that it simply forces us to slow down.

During a meeting or lecture, it's possible to type what you're hearing verbatim. But often, "you're not actually processing that information — you're just typing in the blind," says van der Meer. "If you take notes by hand, you can't write everything down," she says.

The relative slowness of the medium forces you to process the information, writing key words or phrases and using drawing or arrows to work through ideas, she says. "You make the information your own," she says, which helps it stick in the brain.

Such connections and integration are still possible when typing, but they need to be made more intentionally. And sometimes, efficiency wins out. "When you're writing a long essay, it's obviously much more practical to use a keyboard," says van der Meer.

Still, given our long history of using our hands to mark meaning in the world, some scientists worry about the more diffuse consequences of offloading our thinking to computers.

"We're foisting a lot of our knowledge, extending our cognition, to other devices, so it's only natural that we've started using these other agents to do our writing for us," says Balasubramaniam.

It's possible that this might free up our minds to do other kinds of hard thinking, he says. Or we might be sacrificing a fundamental process that's crucial for the kinds of immersive cognitive experiences that enable us to learn and think at our full potential.

Balasubramaniam stresses, however, that we don't have to ditch digital tools to harness the power of handwriting. So far, research suggests that scribbling with a stylus on a screen activates the same brain pathways as etching ink on paper. It's the movement that counts, he says, not its final form.

BANGOR – It’s a fact of life: everyone experiences disappointment, loss, and change at some point in our lives. While it is a normal part of life, these emotions and experiences still cause sadness, anxiety, and stress.

This May, during Mental Health Awareness Month, Northern Light Acadia Hospital reminds everyone that mental resilience and wellness can be developed with certain actions and tools. 

“Just as maintaining good physical health can help us recover quickly from physical injury or illness, maintaining mental wellness can help us recover from unexpected adversity, trauma, and stress,“ says Charmaine Patel, MD, medical director, Adult Inpatient, Northern Light Acadia Hospital. “It’s important to have good practices in place to build resilience for the times when we really need it.“

Here are seven steps to consider to better ensure a positive mental outlook:

  • Practice self-care and make yourself a priority – Eat a healthy diet, exercise, maintain good boundaries, try to get some sunshine, and get plenty of sleep.
  • Disconnect from electronics and social media and instead build real connections with real people – Consider adding an electronics-free time period to your day. Social media can stir up feelings of inadequacy. Connecting with others is linked to happiness.
  • Engage in activities that provide meaning – Take part in activities that make you feel happy, productive, and challenge your creativity such as drawing, going out to dinner with friends, or caring for a pet.
  • Volunteer and practice universal kindness – Helping others can enrich and expand your life—and make you happier! Being kind to others also increases the chance that you will be kind to yourself.
  • Engage in meditation and/or mindfulness – Relaxation exercises have been scientifically proven to improve mental and physical wellness!
  • Avoid substance use – Try to keep alcohol use to a minimum and avoid other drugs. Many people use alcohol and other drugs to “self-medicate” but in reality, substance use may get in the way of your ability to function at work or school, maintain a stable home life, handle life’s difficulties, and relate to others.
  • Get help from a licensed mental health professional when and if you need it –Knowing when to ask for help is important. Just as it requires effort to build and maintain physical health, so it is with mental health.

These are just a few suggestions of small but impactful ways to improve your mental health every day. Most of all, remember that people who seek and receive appropriate care can and do recover from mental illness and lead full, productive, and rewarding lives!
